James Gunn Discusses the Challenges of Cutting Trailers for the GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY Films

Director James Gunn has had some challenges when cutting together his trailers for Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy movies. As he's getting ready to release the first full trailer for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 later this month, he talks to THR about some of these challenges and reveals that he almost didn't release the teaser for his first Guardians of the Galaxy movie!

When comparing the trailer for his most recent film project The Belko Experiment with his upcoming Guardians trailer he explains:

"Guardians is the harder one. With Belko, the premise is what people have to buy into. With Guardians, people really go through every single little shot and try to figure out what the movie's about. And there's a lot of mysteries in Guardians 2."

One of the biggest things about making the trailer for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, is deciding what kind of story elements they want to give the fans.

"We were talking about how much to give away — and we're not going to give away very much."

Of course, the fans are still going to go through it frame-by-frame, pick it apart, and try to find something that we think is hidden in their. It's just our nature! He goes on to say:

"You can show all sorts of stuff happening and it doesn't really give away who lives, who dies, what the outcome is, what the mystery is. With Guardians, it's such an emotional and physical journey, going to all these different places. It's like, 'God, do I really want to show this planet we go to in the middle of the movie? … Those are always hard choices to make."

I'm sure the fans are going to love whatever the upcoming trailer has to offer. He went on to talk about the very first teaser trailer for the first Guardians film and how it almost never saw the light of day.

"That trailer tested not very well. We had another trailer that was very cheesy that sold the movie as something different than what it was — that tested a little better.
"And at the end of the day, the [marketing] guys were like, 'This is what the movie is. We are selling what the movie is. Not something else.' You've got to sell the movie for what it is, and that's what they did. They really bought my trust with that on the first movie."

It's good to know that the film had a smart marketing team that understood that. I loved that first trailer! I thought it was perfect. But now I'm curious to know what that cheesy trailer that got scrapped was like!

Todd McFarlane Wants to Resurrect His SPAWN/BATMAN Crossover Sequel

In 1994, Todd McFarlane teamed up with Frank Miller to create a crossover comic featuring Spawn and Batman. Miller wrote it, and McFarlane created the art. It was a pretty big deal, and the comic turned out to be pretty badass. In case you missed that, here's a story summary:

Batman comes to New York City in his search for an arsenal of high-tech weapons and robots that use decapitated human heads as their brains. Antagonistic, confrontational and suspicious of each other, Spawn and Batman engage in violent battles before realizing they are both after the same villain. Grudgingly, they decide to work together. The person they seek has been kidnapping and decapitating the homeless for use in the robots, but that’s only part of the plan: There is also a nuclear arsenal ready to be deployed.

There was a follow-up comic planned a few years later, but unfortunately it never happened. He even brought on comic artist Greg Capullo to work with him on it, and this was a time when Capullo had no experience with the Dark Knight. McFarlane talked about this and sais that he wants to eventually resurrect the Spawn/Batman sequel. He said:

"We had the first one Frank Miller and I did, that did pretty well. Then years later we announced another one that I was going to do and Greg Capullo was going to draw. Then Greg ends up being the pre-eminent Batman artist of the last few years, so we were sort of ahead of the curb. Maybe we'll resurrect that when the time's right. I think that both of the characters visually fit with each other, and I think that there's enough character differences that it's not just the same guy in a different suit. The story I pitched them was about how all the opposites -- character flaws if you will. Hopefully someday I can find an opening there to do that myself."

I'd love to see him do this! But with McFarlane, who knows if it will ever happen. Remember, the guy has been talking about doing a new Spawn film for years, but it still has yet to happen. Maybe he'll get around to making the new Batman/Spawn comic after he makes his Spawn movie! If you didn't catch that, that was sarcasm.

Cinemassacre Examines the Popularity of STAR WARS

What makes Star Wars popular? It sounds like such a simple question doesn't warrant an 11-minute video, especially for people like us. Yet, the longer I watched the Cinemassacre rant, the more I began to question why exactly I love Star Wars as much as I do? It's something that's always been there since childhood, and I can't pinpoint when I first realized that I liked Star Wars. If I had to guess it had to begin with a lightsaber toy or perhaps Super Star Wars on SNES, and as much as guys my age hate to admit it, we didn't hate the prequel films when they first came out because we were too young to know any better.

I'm sharing this not because I agree with his views, but rather for the dialogue it opened within myself. Can you pinpoint where your Star Wars fandom began? I'm especially curious about the crowd who, like me, weren't alive during the initial release of the films!

Marvel and Sony Pictures just had a panel at the Comic Con Experience 2016 in São Paulo, Brazil, and they showed off a new clip from Spider-Man: Homecoming. The footage screened confirmed previous rumors that Spider-Man's new costume will have web wings!

Thanks to Marvel's Ryan Penagos we have a description of the clip that revealed Spidey's cool new upgrade! Here's what he posted on Twitter:

He sure is excited about what he saw! I'm sure we'll all get to see the wings ourselves when the first trailer is released in the near future. I'm hoping that it will be attached to Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, but we'll just have to wait and see.

I'm pretty excited about the web wings. Sounds like they'll make a really fun addition to the costume.

The Jon Watts-directed film will be released on theaters on July 7, 2017.

Foot Locker just released a great new commercial featuring characters from the classic 1996 film Space Jam including Bugs Bunny and the monstrous super team. It's a fun commercial in which the monsters are taking over the game of basketball because they are unbeatable. A few players go to Bugs Bunny for some help, and Blake Griffin and Jimmy Butler come together to take the game back.

Earlier this year it was announced that Justin Lin (Fast & Furious, Star Trek: Beyond) would direct Space Jam 2 with Lebron James. There haven't been any updates on the project since then. While we wait to see how that materializes, enjoy the commercial!

I haven't watched One Piece in a very long time, but this trailer makes me want to jump right back in again! I would have to imagine that this feature film, titled One Piece: Gold, would be a one-off adventure anyway. I don't recognize everyone in the trailer, but there are still a few people I can remember from my high school days of watching! Here's the official description...

Marines, and filthy rich millionaires. Drawn by dreams of hitting the jackpot, Captain Luffy and his crew sail straight for the gold. But behind the gilded curtains lies a powerful king whose deep pockets and deeper ambitions spell disaster for the Straw Hats and the New World alike.

Unnerving New Trailer for THE AUTOPSY OF JANE DOE with Emile Hirsch and Brian Cox

André Øvredal‘s The Autopsy of Jane Doe looks like a wonderfully twisted and disturbing horror film. We've got a new trailer for you to watch today that is really quite unnerving. If you're a fan of horror films, I've heard that this is a movie that you'll not want to miss.

The film stars Brian Cox and Emile Hirsch as father and son coroners who receive a mysterious homicide victim with no apparent cause of death. As they attempt to identify the young "Jane Doe," they start to discover bizarre clues that will unlock the secrets behind her death. Here's the official synopsis:

In small-town Virginia, police are called to a gruesome crime scene where a family has been massacred in their own house. In the basement, an even more disturbing discovery is made: the partially buried corpse of a nude woman. The cops take this unidentified victim to a small, family-run morgue, where they ask proprietor Tommy Tilden (Brian Cox) to perform an urgent forensic analysis in order to help determine what happened at the blood-stained house. Tommy’s son Austen (Emile Hirsch) cancels a date with his girlfriend (Ophelia Lovibond) in order to help his father perform an autopsy, and the two Tildens set about their grisly examination in the morgue basement. Working late into the night as they methodically peel back layers of skin, muscle, and bone, Tommy and Austen are baffled by the lack of external signs of trauma on the victim and the alarming extent of her internal injuries. Increasingly perplexed and frustrated by these forensic anomalies, the pair begins to succumb to late-night jitters, getting spooked at apparitions that seem to be lurking in the shadows. As the dread mounts and the atmosphere gets thick with evil, it becomes apparent that the Tildens’ fate is intertwined with a darkness that neither of them can comprehend.

The movie will be released on VOD on December 20th, and also get a limited theatrical release on December 21, 2016.

The History Of GODZILLA Examined In Cool Mini-Doc

Did you know the original film Gojira was a subtle political message in response to post-war occupation of Japan by the United States? It's weird how the film in its translation to an American audience went from being a personification of the horrors of nuclear warfare on the Japanese, to essentially another stereotype we could use in jokes against them.

Godzilla has evolved since we were at odds with Japan, and the meaning he once held was lost in translation in numerous sequels, reboots, and merchandising. It's crazy to think that the character was essentially meant as a biting commentary criticizing the American government, and now we celebrate the character as the gold standard for monster movies!

MEAN GIRLS Meets THE EXORCIST in Lionsgate Film Adaptation of THE MERCILESS

Liosngate is currently developing a feature film adaptation of a horror novel called The Merciless that was written by Danielle Vega. They are hiring Hannah Macpherson to direct the film. She previously wrote and directed another horror movie called Sick House. The story is described as Mean Girls meets The Exorcist. It centers on a new girl who comes to a small-town high school. There, the popular girls take her under their wing and pressure her into joining them in the torturous exorcism of a rebellious classmate. Here's the detailed description on the book:

Danielle Vega delivers blood-curdling suspense and terror on every page of this thrilling debut novel. Fans of Asylum by Madeleine Roux and Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children will devour this terrifying series.

Brooklyn Stevens sits in a pool of her own blood, tied up and gagged. No one outside of these dank basement walls knows she’s here. No one can hear her scream.

Sofia Flores knows she shouldn’t have gotten involved. When she befriended Riley, Grace, and Alexis on her first day at school, she admired them, with their perfect hair and their good-girl ways. They said they wanted to save Brooklyn. They wanted to help her. Sofia didn’t realize they believed Brooklyn was possessed.

Now, Riley and the girls are performing an exorcism on Brooklyn—but their idea of an exorcism is closer to torture than salvation. All Sofia wants is to get out of this house. But there is no way out. Sofia can’t go against the other girls...unless she wants to be next.

By the shockingly twisted end, readers will be faced with the most haunting question of all: Is there evil in all of us?

This actually sounds like a really demented yet interesting story. This could end up being a really great and twisted horror film, and I'm kinda looking forward to watching it. I'll probably just end up reading the book first, though.

Most costume creators don't work with shoes...mainly because I would imagine it's super expensive. Gary Lockwood, aka Freehand Profit, isn't most costume creators. Amy Schumer to Star in the Live-Action BARBIE Movie and We Have Plot Details

Comedian Amy Schumer (Trainwreck) will star in Sony Picture's live-action adaptation of Mattel's popular toy line Barbie. The studio announced the project back in 2014 and they are looking to put a contemporary spin on the property dealing with beauty, feminism, and identity.

Last year the studio hired three scribes to pen separate screenplays for the film, and they ended up taking the one written by Hilary Winston (My Name is Earl, Community). The film will be based on this script, and according to THR, Schumer will rewrite the script with her sister, Kim Caramele.

The film will "try to address those [themes] in a story that begins in a perfect land of Barbies where one woman slowly awakens to the fact that she doesn’t fit it. She is expelled from the idealistic land and journeys to the real world, where she discovers that being unique is an asset."

The hope is that the movie will offer audiences an "imaginative family comedy with plenty of heart," and it's said to be inspired by Tom Hanks' classic films such as Splash and Big, as well as Disney’s Enchanted.

This actually sounds a lot better than I was expecting from a Barbie movie. Plus I'm a fan of Schumer's style of comedy and humor, so I'm curious to see what she ends up doing with it. What do you all think?

THOR: RAGNAROK Promo Art Features Hulk and Thor Ready for Battle!

An extremely cool piece of promo art from Marvel's Thor: Ragnarok has surfaced online, and it gives us our first real look at how Thor and Hulk will appear in the film. As you can see, they are all decked out in armor, war paint on their faces, and they're ready for battle!

Hulk looks awesome in his battle armor, and Thor is wielding a couple of badass looking swords, which is something we've never really seen from the character before in the MCU because he always tends to have Mjölnir on him.

I imagine that the way that we see these two characters here is they way that they will appear in the Grandmaster's Gladiator games.

A Futuristic Army Battles Ghostly Aliens in Netflix's Badass Trailer for SPECTRAL

Netflix has just released the trailer for their original sci-fi action film Spectral and this flick looks freakin' rad! The film is set in the future of a war-torn European city, and it follows a team of soldiers who come together to defend the city from an otherworldly ghostly-type alien force. The movie definitely looks like it will be a blast to watch.

There are some super cool visuals in the film, and I really like the concept for it, especially the otherworld force that the army is trying to fight. It looks better than many of the big-budget movies that are being released in theaters.

The movie was directed by Nic Mathieu, and it has a solid cast of actors that includes James Badge Dale, Emily Mortimer, and Bruce Greenwood. Spectral premieres on Netflix next week on December 9th!

James Wan's AQUAMAN Gets an Official Release Date

$

Warner Bros. has officially set the release date for James Wan's Aquaman for October 5th, 2018. This is one of two release dates that were set by the studio for a couple of unknown DC film projects. The second date is for July 27th, 2018, and a film has yet to be placed in that slot.

A lot of fans, including myself, thought that Aquaman would fill the July date and that Ben Affleck's Batman solo film would fill the October one. Maybe it's actually the other way around. Who knows, though, another DC film could end up filling the slot.

Aquaman is set to star Jason Momoa, and he made his silly little debut in Batman v Superman. He will be joined by Amber Heard as Mera, Queen of Atlantis, and Willem Dafoe as advisor Vulko.

When previously talking about the film, Wan described it as a "swashbuckling action adventure, sort of high seas adventure story. It's ultimately a quest story in the spirit of Raiders of the Lost Ark meets Romancing the Stone." He also said that he really wants "to get the classic action-adventure-romance aspect through that, and I think that’s kind of fun."

The only thing that gives me hope that this movie will be good is the fact that Wan is helming it. Hopefully he can make a great Aquaman film that fans will love.

When talking about this, he says:

I have many a fond memory watching TNG while growing up, and First Contact is still my favourite Trek movie. I wasn't able to find any covers, at all, of Red Alert (The Battle of Sector 001), and this is also the first piece I have ever used an acoustic with!
