A SESAME STREET Movie Is in Development with STRANGER THINGS Producer Shawn Levy

Warner Bros. has started developing a new Sesame Street movie with Stranger Things producer Shawn Levy, and they've hired David Guion and Michael Handelman to write the script. The two writers have previously worked on films such as the adventure comedy Night at The Museum: Secret of the Tomb and the Steve Carrell comedy Dinner for Schmucks

According to Deadline, the writers will "start with a treatment as the studio finds a handle for a narrative family film based on the 47-year-old show that has been redone by WB’s sister company, HBO."

So, they aren't sure what exactly this Sesame Street movie will be yet, but I'm sure they'll figure out something good that respects what the series is. I'm curious to see what they end up coming up with. Sesame Street is one of the most beloved children shows ever, and the characters in it are iconic. This will be the third Sesame Street film since it's been around. In 1985 there was a film called Follow that Bird, and in 1999 there was The Adventures of Elmo in Grouchland

What would you all like to see from a new Sesame Street movie? Here are the trailers for the two previous films.

Sam Raimi Explains Why He Can't Get THE LAST OF US Film Adaptation Rolling Forward

$

Back in 2014, it was officially announced that Sam Raimi would be developing a big-screen adaptation of the hit video game The Last of Us. Game of Thrones star Maise Williams was said to be attached to the project, and it looked like things were falling into place. Then earlier this year, the writer and director of the game, Neil Druckmann, who also wrote the script for the film, offered up some bad news

"I know I said in an interview a while back we had a table read, got the script to a good place and it kind of entered development hell like these things tend to do. ... There hasn't been any work done on it in over a year and a half."

It doesn't sound like much has changed since then. IGN recently talked to Raimi about the project, and he gave an update explaining how things went down and what his involvement in the project is:

"Well, unfortunately that one -- when we went to Neil with Ghost House Pictures we were hoping to get the rights like we do any project and then we'd take it out and sell it but we'd control the rights. With this one he went to Sony -- who I have a very good relationship with -- but they have their own plans for it and I think Neil's plan for it -- I'm not trying to be political -- Neil's plan for it is not the same as Sony's. And because my company doesn't have the rights, I actually can't help him too much. Even though I'm one of the producers on it the way he set it up, he sold his rights to Sony, Sony hired me as a producer by chance, and I can't get the rights free for him so I'm not in the driver's seat and I can't tell you what Sony and Neil together will decide on. If they do move forward I'd love to help them again."

When pressed further about what his attachment to the project is, Raimi explained that for some reason Sony Pictures doesn't want to move forward with it, and he's not in a position to help push it forward:

"Yes, I'm attached to it. I'm not too sure what that means. Right now it's just sitting there. They don't want to move forward, and it's not my place to say why, and Neil, I think, is in a slight disagreement with them about how things should go so there's a standstill. And I don't have the power to move it."

That sucks. What's the point of being a producer on a film if there's nothing you can do to push it forward and make it happen. Isn't that one of the jobs of a producer? This is a project that Raimi was incredibly excited about doing, and now he's in a position where there's nothing he can really do to push it back into development.

I'm sure it will happen one day, but it doesn't look like it's going to be anytime soon.

Steve Carell in Talks to Join the Feature Film Adaptation of MINECRAFT

It looks like Warner Bros. is about to cast the first big actor in their feature film adaptation of the popular video game franchise Minecraft. According to Variety, Steve Carell is currently in talks to take on a lead role in the film.

I don't play Minecraft, but I think there's a good chance that this adaptation could be really fun and entertaining. The reason I say that is because the film is being written and directed by Rob McElhenney, who is the creator, writer, and star of the hilarious comedy series It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia

There's no information on who Carell will be playing in the film, but he will be a part of an ensemble cast that will make up a number of characters in the story. There are no details on what that story might be, but I'm sure McElhenney has come up with something that audiences will get a kick out of.

Minecraft is set to be released in theaters on May 25th, 2017.

Doctor Stranger Things Cosplay Wins All the Eggos

Christopher G. Moore hit NC Comic-Con this weekend with his brilliant mashup cosplay "Doctor Stranger Things." Using Stranger Things' Eleven as a base, Moore added elements of Doctor Strange, like his signature white temples the cloak of levitation. Then elements were combined, like the Eye of Agamotto and Eggos becoming the Eye of EggOmoto (H/T: Laughing Squid). An energy shield combined with Christmas lights is an extra touch of brilliance. All we need now is someone to make a Dormammu and Demogorgon cosplay mash-up. But what would we call that, Demomammu or Dormogorgon?

DON'T BREATHE Sequel in Development

Director Fede Alvarez has confirmed that the horror thriller Don't Breathe has a sequel in the works. Coming Soon writes the director had this to say when speaking about the new project...

"...Yeah, it’s true. We’re putting together the story right now. Obviously, there’s a book and there’s a script that’s great. Because we write everything I direct, we’re working on that part right now to make it our own and put our imprint in it so it feels like it’s part of our filmography...We just started, but we know exactly where it goes, but we won’t tell you right now. But there will be more ‘Don’t Breathe’ for sure."

I have heard nothing but great things about Don't Breathe, although I have yet to see it myself! Luckily the film will be released on DVD and Blu-Ray November 29th, so I won't have to wait long to watch it.

New HIDDEN FIGURES Trailer — Untold Story of Black Female Mathematicians at NASA

Growing up near JPL and just being a bit of a science nerd, some of my favorite movies are The Right Stuff and Apollo 13. Hidden Figures gives us something really different than those other space race films and tells the story of three women trying not only to break the gender glass ceiling of 1960s America but also the racial norms of that time.

Taraji P. Henson who plays physicist, space scientist, and mathematician Katherine Johnson is perfectly cast in what looks like role built for an Oscar nomination. Janelle Monae as mathematician and aerospace engineer Mary Jackson looks surprisingly delightful, looking at her IMDb shows that this is only her second real acting role. Octavia Spencer as mathematician Dorothy Vaughan seems like a safe bet.

My impression from the trailer is it's a lot like a feel good sports movie. Humor, science, and based on a true story, Hidden Figures is ticking all my boxes for a movie to be a "must watch."

Disney recently released the full trailer for their upcoming live-action adaptation of Beauty and the Beast, and fans seemed to love it. It became the highest watched trailer in the first 24 hours after its release, beating the previous record set by 50 Shades Darker. As you know, it was packed full of footage that beautifully paid homage to the original animated movie. Thanks to Moviepilot, we have a video that gives us a side-by-side comparison of these two films, and it's really interesting to see how similar the new film is to the original. Check it out!

As much as I've hated the lack of a truly compelling story in Michael Bay's Transformers movies, I've somehow watched nearly all of them in IMAX 3D. In a featurette for Transformers: The Last Knight we see some cinematic highlights of previous films. Around the 1:20 mark we get some behind the scenes footage of the upcoming movie's King Arthur, Bumblebee, Stonehenge, and lots of Bayhem.

Transformers: The Last Knight and its $260 million budget will hit screens June 23rd, 2017 (USA).

Adam Savage Gives a Tour of Peter Jackson's Badass Movie Prop Collection

I used to think Guillermo Del Toro's movie memorabilia collection was impressive, but it ain't got shit on what Peter Jackson has! Jurassic Park raptors, Daleks, Hal 9000...this collection is staggering. I guess that's the difference between Hellboy money and Lord of the Rings money!

Jackson needs to set up a museum for geeks to make a pilgrimage to because I would probably cry if I were to step foot in such a glorious place. To be honest, I'm surprised Adam Savage isn't openly weeping given the hardcore collector that he is! Check out the collection and watch Adam and Peter geek out in the video below.

FANTASTIC BEASTS: J.K. Rowling Talks Johnny Depp Becoming Grindelwald

$

At GeekTyrant we treated the news of Johnny Depp being cast as Grindelwald as a minor spoiler, especially as it's described as being nearly a cameo in the first Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them film. It seems the marketing machine couldn't just let this be something revealed in the movie. Now that it's fairly well-known, J.K. Rowling spoke very openly about it to MTV.

Rowling on Depp inhabiting the character of Grindelwald across from Eddie Redmayne as Newt Scamander:

"Watching him create a character is fascinating. It's been quite inspiring to me as the writer. I feel he's got quite an interesting approach to creating a character. It's a privilege to work with someone like that. It's very similar to the way Eddie works and moves around and inhabits the character. The physicality is exactly right."

We only get glimpses at Grindelwald in the Harry Potter films. Who he is and what he's done is a lot clearer in the books. The Fantastic Beasts series of films will cover 19 years across five films. It's pretty easy to see that Depp will be the big bad of these movies, and I couldn't be more excited to see his full performance in the coming sequel.

Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them opens this weekend, November 18th (USA).

Watch: Trey Parker Uses His Daughter to Record Lines for Ike in SOUTH PARK

While Kyle's brother Ike has been voiced by several children over the years, in South Park's season 20 Ike has been voiced by Trey Parker's daughter Betty! I just assumed they used voice modulation on Ike's voice all these years and it was either Trey Parker or Matt Stone doing the voice! In the video below you'll see Betty (with the help of her dad) recording lines for episode seven, which is titled "Oh Geez".

It has to be a trip growing up knowing your dad is the creator of one of the most profane shows in television history! How could you ever get in trouble for the things you do?!

Anime Expert Explains Why GHOST IN THE SHELL Will Not Appeal to Fans

Digibro has long been known for sharing his opinion on current and past anime on Youtube and has made himself quite a reputation for it. Today, he breaks his silence and speaks out against the Ghost In The Shell film after having viewed the trailer. While I'm typically not one to jump and agree with people who dismiss a film before having seen it, I think his nearly 20-minute rant makes more than a few valid points.

The biggest of these is that there simply never was a reason to create a live-action version of the 1995 animated film. Fans weren't asking for a live-action version, and neither were the people who know nothing about the series! The animated film was key in legitimizing anime as a serious genre to a worldwide audience, and while the new film trailer tries to pay homage to it, it's almost more of an insult to try and sway audiences away from an already superior film and lead them to believe this will be better.

What I love about this rant is that Digibro's main arguments have nothing to do with "whitewashing" cinema. He jumps in as a full-fledged fan of anime and brings several valid reasons that this film (and other adaptations of GITS) completely miss the point of the manga and film.

Take a listen to his rant (listen at 1.5 speed), and let me know if you think he's preaching the Geek Gospel below.
