Video: 24 Similarities Between MONSTER SQUAD and HARRY POTTER: THE PRISONER OF AZKABAN

0
0

Couch Tomato is back with another "24 Reasons" video. 1-5 seem kind of obvious, but 6-24 are crazy coincidental and very insightful. It's been a long while since I've seen Monster Squad and watching this video  made me want to revisit it. Prisoner of Azkaban in my opinion is the best of the Harry Potter films and singlehandedly changed the tone for the rest of the movies, saving the franchise.

awesomely-exciting-full-trailer-for-kong-skull-island2

The full trailer for Legendary Pictures' Kong: Skull Island dropped, and it looks like it's going to be an incredibly fun and epic film. Over the past few days, the studio has been releasing brief teaser footage from the trailer, and now that the full trailer is here we get to see the best vision of this new version of Kong yet. This thing is a complete beast that isn't going to take any shit. This is the biggest version of Kong we've seen yet. It makes sense to make him bigger so that it's a fair fight between Kong and Godzilla when that versus movie comes around. We also get to see some other crazy creatures in the film as well!

The story follows a diverse team of explorers who are brought together "to venture deep into an uncharted island in the Pacific—as beautiful as it is treacherous—unaware that they’re crossing into the domain of the mythic Kong."

Kong: Skull Island was directed by John Vogt-Roberts and has a great cast that includes Tom Hiddleston, Samuel L. Jackson, Brie Larson, John Goodman, and John C. Reilly. Then you have the supporting cast featuring Tian Jing, Corey Hawkins, Jason Mitchell, John Ortiz, Thomas Mann, Shea Whigham, Toby Kebbell, and Eugene Cordero.

Kong: Skull Island opens in theaters March 10, 2017. I've also included a couple of posters that you can see above and below the trailer:

Forest Whitaker Joins Johnny Depp in Tupac Murder Investigation Drama LABYRINTH

Forest Whitaker is set to join Johnny Depp in the upcoming murder investigation drama Labyrinth. The film follows the story of the investigation into the murders of rappers Tupac Shakur and Notorious B.I.G. back in the '90s.

According to Deadline, "Depp plays a disgraced LAPD detective (Russell Poole) who is unable to solve his biggest case: the murders of the hip-hop icons. Whitaker will play the journalist who teams with the cop, each determined to find the truth, and each with a reason to seek redemption in an effort that sets them against the cops."

The movie is set to be directed by Brad Furman (The Infiltrator, The Lincoln Lawyer). The screenplay was written by Christian Contreras, and it was adapted from the book by Randall Sullivan. The script was so good that it moved from being on the Black List of best unproduced screenplays to actually being produced.

Depp and Whitaker are both wonderfully talented actors, and this seems like it will be a great project for them to work on. They should work well together. Whitaker recently starred in the sci-fi drama Arrival, which has received a lot of high critical acclaim.

ON SUNDAY Is a Sci-Fi Short About an Old Man and His Dog Witnessing Something Incredible

0

"Who said nothing ever happens on Sunday?"

For me, Sundays end up being pretty uneventful days. They are mostly spent wishing that Monday wouldn't come. For the old man in this short film, a seemingly normal, relaxing Sunday turns out to be something extraordinary. The short is called "On Sunday," and this is the brief plot summary:

A man and his dog make their routine walk to the isolated clifftops of Cornwall...but this time they realise they're not so isolated after all.

In the story, they witness a UFO rise up from the ocean and shoot up into space. It's a simple story, but it's done really well. The film was directed by David Lea, who made the film on no budget. He explained his inspiration for the short in an e-mail that he sent to Firstshowing, saying:

"Way back in 1984 [my dad] hand built a cabin bed for my bedroom and underneath this, made from wood, flashing lights and copper piping, he'd constructed a spaceship cockpit… 31 years later I thought it was past time to repay the favour."

I hope you enjoy what he's created!

Mark Hamill Shares His Thoughts on Jared Leto's Version of The Joker

0
0

Mark Hamill's Joker is hands down my favorite version of the character. He just brings the character to life in a way that no other person can, and he does it all with the power of his voice. I've actually been curious to know what Hamill's thoughts might be on Jared Leto's version of the character in Suicide Squad. Now we know!

While talking to Polygon about his new series Pop Culture Quest, Hamill was asked what he thought of Leto's Joker and this was his reply:

"Everyone brings a different spin to the character ... I don’t think there’s a definitive version of the Joker and I don’t think there can be. It’s like Hamlet, really. It’ll be constantly redefined."

He makes a great point there, but for me, I'd have to say that Hamill is the definitive Joker. Now, if you think he was beating around the bush and avoiding saying what he really thinks, Polygon notes that Hamill said "he loved" Leto's performance and that he "hasn’t seen an interpretation yet that’s made him go, 'That was terrible.'"

I know a lot of fans will disagree with Hamill, and that's ok. He's just obviously very gracious when talking about other actors that take on the role of the Joker.  What do you think about the comments he made here?

Review: FANTASTIC BEASTS AND WHERE TO FIND THEM Is a Symphony of Magical Storytelling

0
0

As a longtime fan of the Harry Potter franchise, of course I was excited to return to the wizarding world with Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them! With J.K. Rowling writing the film and David Yates directing, my expectations for an amazing film were incredibly high. Could this movie actually live up to those expectations? Hell yeah, it could, and it totally did!

It was so nice visiting this world of magic that I had come to love again. Yeah, the film is set in a completely different time period and takes place in New York City, but it still has a very familiar and comfortable feeling. The second that the WB logo entered the screen with the Harry Potter music playing over it, I was instantly sucked in and engulfed by all those wonderful feelings that I felt while watching the original Harry Potter films.

One of my favorite things about this first movie in the Fantastic Beasts franchise was getting to know these new characters. Eddie Redmayne’s Newt Scamander, Katherine Waterston’s Porpentina Goldstein, Dan Fogler’s Jacob Kowalski, Alison Sudol’s Queenie Goldstein, Ezra Miller’s Credence, and Colin Ferrell’s Percival Graves were among the most notable. They all did an incredible job and were wonderfully perfect in the roles they played.

The movie is very much a character study of these new characters, and they were beautifully established. By the end of the movie I really cared about the heroes of the story and found the villains absolutely fascinating. I was 100% invested in each and every one of them and the adventure story that they were a part of. I personally think that Fogler stole the show, though. He was so amusing, and his character was so likable. I was rooting for him through the entire film.

I don’t want to ruin the story for you because there’s a lot of great stuff and a few unexpected twists and turns that are best experienced knowing as little as possible. I will say that the story is set in 1926 and that it centers on Newt Scamander who comes to New York after a global excursion to find and document an extraordinary array of magical creatures. He comes to America during a time of intensity and uneasiness for the wizard community, and through a series of events a few of his creatures escape and he has to get them back. In the process, he enlists the help of a No-Maj (American for Muggle) named Jacob to help him.

There’s so much more to the story than that, though! So much more! It goes a lot deeper. This is just one of a few different plot points that audiences will follow that will propel the story forward into the four additional sequels that Warner Bros. is developing. I wasn’t expecting a lot of the stuff in this movie at all. The marketing team did a great job keeping some of the other main story elements under wraps. I absolutely loved how all of these story elements came together. It was like Yates and Rowling were playing a symphony of storytelling and spectacular visuals when bringing this story to life on the big screen, and they conducted it with their magic wands!

Speaking of visuals, they were absolutely stunning! There was a ton of incredible effects work that went into making this film. From bringing the city of New York to life in 1920s fashion, to the magical elements, to the creature designs that were fantastically brought to life. Each one of them had a different crazy look and unique personality that shined through the effects work. I’ll just say that the stuff we see in this movie was an upgrade to anything that we’ve previously seen in the franchise.

Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them is an incredibly fun film that you cannot miss, especially on the big screen! This type of production and story is the reason why I love going to the movies so much. It’s spectacular in every way and it’s a film that the whole family will love!

Like most of the previous Harry Potter films, I didn’t want this one to end. I’m completely invested in this new franchise, and I can’t wait to see where the story goes from here!

'90s Comic Book BONE Is Being Adapted for Film by KUNG FU PANDA Director Mark Osborne

Kung Fu Panda and The Little Prince director Mark Osborne is set to helm a feature film adaptation of Jeff Smith’s cult comic book series Bone. The film is set up as an animated project at Warner Bros. and he will co-write the script with Adam Kline.

It’s been a long time since I’ve seen anything that had to do with Bone. The comics ran from 1991 to 2004, and since then they had a resurgence when Scholastic began releasing them as graphic novels. Here's a brief description of the story:

The comic told of three Bone cousins – Fone Bone, Phoney Bone and Smiley Bone, all small, bald and humanlike creatures with big noses– who are separated and lost in a vast uncharted desert after being run of out Boneville. One by one they find their way into a deep forested valley filled with wonderful and terrifying creatures.

Talking to THR about the project, Osborne said:

“Bone is very special and unconventional because it blends elements together that you don’t necessarily expect — soft, little comic characters and epic high stakes fantasy adventure. To carry this into the cinematic realm presents both an opportunity to represent what readers of all ages have loved about the series, while pushing animated storytelling into exciting and different areas."

Osborne has proven he’s got the talent to direct a solid animated film. It’ll be interesting to see what he plans on doing with Bone. If this first film is successful, it could be a solid animated franchise for the studio because there are so many stories to tell. If you are a fan of the Bone comic, do you think that it will make for a good film franchise?

Neil Gaiman Developing a New TV Series Based on a Skyscraper Moving Through Alternate Realities

0
0

Neil Gaiman has teamed up with Angry Films to develop a new sci-fi/fantasy TV series for Fox called The Building, and it sounds like a really cool and fascinating concept! The series is based on a digital film called Parallels that was written and directed by Chris Leone, and it centers on a multiverse skyscraper! Seriously, this series sounds awesome and different from anything that we’re seeing right now. Deadline offers up the following plot information:

The Building involves a large skyscraper that moves between alternate realities and a group of young urban explorers who are in the building and suddenly find themselves on an Earth wherein Reagan was not elected and Russia dropped the bomb. They then figure out they have a limited amount of time to figure out where they are and rescue members of their team before the building shifts again to another reality. They soon realize that this Earth is also different from where they started and getting back may be impossible.

According to the report, the series will explore the origin of the building, “who built it and why, what happens on each floor and how, if at all possible, do they get back to their original Earth.”

That’s a pretty exciting and ambitious concept for a series, and there so many fun and different elements that they could explore. With Gaiman’s imagination leading the charge on this project there’s no doubt that it has a good chance of turning out great. I’m definitely looking forward to seeing how this series comes together.

I included a trailer for the original digital film below:

Some of Our Favorite Fantastic Beasts From Other Movies

0
0

This week marks the release of Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, the latest cinematic entry into J.K. Rowling’s wizarding world. But instead of concentrating on only the Harry Potter movies, I wanted to take a look at some of the coolest “fantastic beasts” that exist outside the realm of that franchise, and basically use this as a means of pointing out some of my favorite crazy creatures in film history. The only criteria: none of the beasts chosen for the list can be animals that currently exist in our real world. So with that out of the way, let’s get on with the choices!

Cyclops, The 7th Voyage of Sinbad

Having only one eye is a given, but aside from that, most depictions of Cyclopses (Cycli?) that I’ve seen in movies basically just look like giant versions of men. This one adds furry legs and hoofed feet, lending an extra bit of other-worldly creepiness to the character.

Tyrannosaurus Rex, Jurassic Park

The T-rex has the distinction of being the only beast on this list that actually did exist at one point, which makes it that much more awesome. Designed as a perfect killing machine, I feel like this thing is the one of the first distillations of raw, primal power that kids are taught about in school; thankfully, Steven Spielberg’s classic film brought it to life in a way that textbooks never could.

Brundlefly, The Fly (1986)

Jeff Goldblum gives a terrific performance in David Cronenberg’s brilliant remake of The Fly, but just as much credit has to go to the effects designers and makeup artists for being able to conjure up imagery that legendarily hideous. Seeing a gunk-covered Goldblum with eyes full of wild desperation will haunt me for the rest of my life.

Medusa, Clash of the Titans (1981)

Yes, it looks a little goofy now, but I still think Medusa from the ’81 Clash of the Titans is one of special effects master Ray Harryhausen’s coolest creations. Caveat: I did study ancient Greek and Roman mythology in college, so I admittedly have a soft spot for fictional creatures from that era. Still, this one’s messy snake hair and green eyes are pretty awesome.

Godzilla, Godzilla

Godzilla is iconic, plain and simple. This list wouldn’t be complete without him, and regardless of how many times he appears on screen in modern movies, there’s something special about a guy wearing that latex suit. You know he’s not real, but being able to see the seams (metaphorically and sometimes literally) somehow adds to the enjoyment of the movie.

Werewolf, An American Werewolf in London

The film’s transformation sequence is widely heralded as one of the high points of movie special effects makeup, and rightly so. Rick Baker’s work is utterly grotesque, and it hammers home just how painful it would be to actually undergo this horrific metamorphosis.

The Balrog, The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of The Ring

From a design perspective, this may be one of the most purely terrifying beasts ever conceived. A huge, winged, fire-breathing demon with a flaming sword and a whip? I shudder just thinking about it, and having recently rewatched Fellowship, the effects are just as effective now as they were fifteen years ago when it premiered.

The Faun, Pan’s Labyrinth

A more lyrical, graceful design than many others on this list, Guillermo del Toro’s Faun is emblematic of the kinds of creatures he creates in his films — ones that fit their worlds so perfectly you can’t imagine what it’d be like if they weren’t there.

Falkor, The NeverEnding Story

Having just rewatched this for a recent episode of The Not Just New Movies podcast, I can say without hesitation that Falkor is weirder than I remembered from my childhood viewing of this movie. But setting that aside, a luck dragon is one of those things that every kid probably wishes they had as a friend/pet — it’s a cathartic experience when Bastian jumps on his back and soars through the skies.

The Xenomorph, Alien

I tried to avoid including aliens on this list because once you include one, it’s a slippery slope and it opens things up to basically the entire list just being a bunch of different alien species from movies over the years. But I just couldn’t ignore the Xenomorph from Ridley Scott’s seminal sci-fi film Alien. This franchise has gained a lot of baggage over the years, but the sleek, phallic, haunting design of this creature still holds up as one of the scariest creatures in film history.

I could keep going for hours with this list, but it’s time for you to take it from here. What are some of your favorite “fantastic beasts” from other movies that didn’t make this list?

New Trailer for MONSTER TRUCKS – A Film Based on an Idea from a 4-Year-Old Kid

0
0

Paramount Pictures has released a new trailer for Nickelodeon's strange looking family adventure film Monster Trucks. This is a movie where the main idea is that a big alien-type creature can live inside and somehow power old trucks. It's an absolutely ridiculous concept, but it could prove to be a fun movie. Here's the synopsis:

Looking for any way to get away from the life and town he was born into, Tripp (Lucas Till), a high school senior, builds a Monster Truck from bits and pieces of scrapped cars. After an accident at a nearby oil-drilling site displaces a strange and subterranean creature with a taste and a talent for speed, Tripp may have just found the key to getting out of town and a most unlikely friend.

Melding cutting edge visual effects and state-of-the-art CGI, Monster Trucks is an action filled adventure for the whole family that will keep you on the edge of your seat and ultimately touch your heart.

I don't know if you know this or not, but the idea for this film came from the 4-year-old son of the former president of Paramount's film group. and the studio dropped $125 million dollars on the development of it. The studio isn't expecting the film to do well because they already announced that they will take a $115 million write-down on it.

Regardless how they think the film is going to do, my kids are very excited about seeing it, and as strange as it looks, I think it could be an entertaining flick that at least the kids will enjoy.

The movie was directed by Chris Wedge and stars Lucas Till, Jane Levy, Holt McCallany, Barry Pepper, Tucker Albrizzi, Danny Glover, Amy Ryan, Rob Lowe, Frank Whaley, and Thomas Lennon.

Monster Trucks hits theaters on January 13, 2017.

Vin Diesel Teases a "Goofy, Adorable" Groot in GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY VOL. 2

0
0

Everyone seems to love Groot, and fans are excited about how the character will be utilized in James Gunn's Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. Fans got their first look at the film last month in a teaser trailer. There wasn't a lot of footage of Groot, but we all know that he's going to be a main part of the story.

In a recent interview with Collider, Vin Diesel talked a little bit about the character that he voices and described baby Groot as being goofy and adorable. When asked what the biggest difference between the two versions of the character is, the actor said:

“Yeah, there is a difference. He couldn’t be more naive as Baby Groot. I always think of the Groot that we saw on the first Guardians as a college-level Groot, so he’s not fully grown yet, but he’s a man. And once he sacrifices himself at the end of the movie, now he has to start all over, so to speak, but we’re gonna see this goofy, adorable, baby Groot thing running around the screen and just learning as he goes.”

Just because Groot is smaller in this film doesn't make him completely useless. You'll definitely see Groot in action. We got to see some of that footage at Comic-Con earlier this year, and there's no doubt fans are going to love how the character is handled in Vol. 2. In a separate interview with Jimmy Fallon, Diesel talked about voicing the character and how he'll be recording various catchphrases for Groot in 16 different languages:

“I think people are gonna love this movie. I think people are gonna love Guardians. I know that, on the first one, I, like, recorded six different languages, and now James Gunn wants to increase the number of languages we do this in. So, every ADR-ed line, every moment in the movie I have to do like 15, 16 times in different languages — which are cool because, you know, it means that my voice is being heard in countries where that’s not always the case, even with big movies that you do, like xXx or Fast [& Furious]. It’s usually voice actors in respective markets that say your lines and that’s not necessarily what the character is always. So, I love that, but it definitely makes it that much more challenging.”

The movie doesn't come out until May 5th, 2017. Between now and then we'll be getting a lot more information on the film, and you can bet we'll be seeing more footage from the sequel in the upcoming trailers and clips that will be released.

The movie also stars Chris Pratt as Star-Lord, Zoe Saldana as Gamora, Dave Bautista as Drax, Bradley Cooper as the voice of Rocket Raccoon, Dave Bautista as Drax, Karen Gillan as Nebula, and Kurt Russell as Ego the Living Planet.

Beastie Boys Music Gets Epically Remixed with Daft Punk Samples

If you're a fan of the Beastie Boys and Daft Punk, you are going to absolutely love these remixed Beastie Boys songs. They were created by a Canadian music producer who goes by the name of Coins. He takes a few classic Beastie Boys tracks that are entirely composed of Daft Punk samples. The end result is eight tracks on an album he calls Daft Science, and I think it'll blow your mind!

I've included all of the songs on the album below, which include "Alive/Intergalactic," "Root Down," "Body Movin," "Pass the Mic," "Check it Out," "Sure Shot," "No Sleep Till Brooklyn," and "Disco Breakin."

First Trailer for Jackie Chan's RAILROAD TIGERS Action-Comedy

0
0

When you attach Jackie Chan's name to a film, describing that as an "action-comedy" feels oddly redundant. Railroad Tigers, directed by Ding Sheng, tells the story of freedom fighters that ambush a Japanese military train. Obviously, the team is somewhat ill prepared for the task. The action bordering on cartoonishness is exactly what we could expect from Chan and Sheng.

Railroad Tigers will have a limited US release January 6th 2017.

What It Means To Be a STAR WARS Nerd

what-it-means-to-be-a-star-wars-nerd7

Star Wars has been a worldwide phenomenon since it debuted in 1977. The franchise is widely credited with launching the age of the modern blockbuster and is directly responsible for the many cinematic universes we see in film today. Disney’s purchase of Lucasfilm in 2012 breathed new life into the franchise after a disappointing prequel trilogy, and fans are excited to see what the future holds. But what does it mean to be a Star Wars fan? We came up with a few things most Star Wars fans do.

The Lightsaber

what-it-means-to-be-a-star-wars-nerd1

Every huge Star Wars fan has one. It may just be the one their mom bought them at Wal-mart when they were a kid or it may be a fancy Force FX replica. Either way, they own one and have at least considered wearing it in public. They battle with their friends, making the iconic humming and clashing noises as they fight. Super hardcore fans may know what their lightsaber color means, and perhaps even the eight different styles of lightsaber combat. Any way you slice it, a Star Wars fan will have a lightsaber.

The Merchandise

what-it-means-to-be-a-star-wars-nerd33

Next to the lightsaber, every good Star Wars fan needs a Star Wars t-shirt. Most likely, they own several, and wear them proudly. And the t-shirt is just the first piece of merchandise a Star Wars fan will own. Action figures, books, posters, prop replicas, costume replicas, Legos, bedsheets, breakfast cereals, and more will fill the home of a Star Wars fan. Every Star Wars fan loves their Star Wars merchandise.

The Prequels

what-it-means-to-be-a-star-wars-nerd2

Most Star Wars fans will agree that the original trilogy (Episodes IV, V, and VI) are the only “good” movies in the franchise. Many Star Wars fans were sorely disappointed with the prequels (Episodes I, II, and III). The prequels had some great action and cool special effects, but they had poorly written dialogue, little to no character development, and not enough practical effects. Just about every Star Wars fan has had multiple heated debates about just how bad the prequels were and where George Lucas went wrong. Despite those heated debates, a true Star Wars fan still knows the prequels inside and out and still loves to watch them.

A Family Affair

what-it-means-to-be-a-star-wars-nerd13

Star Wars is a unique franchise. It has captured three generations of fans: the generation raised on the original trilogy, the generation raised on the prequel trilogy, and the generation that will experience the new trilogy and stand-alone films. Parents love watching their kids fall in love with Star Wars almost as much as they love watching the films themselves. There are countless videos out there of parents and their kids enjoying Star Wars together, and no matter your age, Star Wars is magical. Just ask these kids...

Going Forward

what-it-means-to-be-a-star-wars-nerd55

Thanks to Disney, J.J. Abrams, and a successful Episode VII, Star Wars has a bright future. This December will bring Rogue One: A Star Wars Story to theaters, the first standalone film in the franchise. With a trilogy still awaiting completion, a Han Solo film, a quality TV series in Star Wars Rebels, and new comic books produced by Marvel, there is plenty for the true Star Wars fan to look forward to. What are your favorite things about being a Star Wars fan?

May the Force be with you.

Jennifer Lawrence's Relaxing Swim Turns into a Nightmare in First Clip from PASSENGERS

0
0

The first clip from the new sci-fi film Passengers has been released, and it's actually kind of terrifying. The clip features Jennifer Lawrence's character going for a relaxing swim when all of a sudden the spacecraft they are on malfunctions and loses its gravity. As you'll see, the swimming pool definitely isn't the place you'd want to be in when this happens. I also included a behind-the-scenes video of Chris Pratt crashing a golf cart on the set of the film.

Passengers centers on a group of 5,228 people who are traveling across the universe in a ship to colonize a new planet. That planet is 120 years away from earth, so the people are put into a hypersleep so that they can survive the journey. 30 years into the trip there’s some kind of malfunction, and two passengers wake up from their hypersleep. Unable to put themselves back in hypersleep, they are destined to live out the rest of their lives on this journey.

The two passengers are Jim (Pratt) and Aurora (Lawrence), and as they begin to fall in love with each other they learn that the ship is in grave danger so they set out on a mission to save the passengers who are still in hypersleep.

This is one of my most anticipated movies of the end of the year, and I'm excited about seeing how this story plays out. I think there's going to some unexpected twists and turns that we don't see coming. Passengers was directed by Morten Tyldum (The Imitation Game) from a screenplay by Jon Spaihts (Prometheus). It’s set to be released on December 21, 2016.

First Trailer for Netflix's LEMONY SNICKET'S A SERIES OF UNFORTUNATE EVENTS

We've had glimpses of Netflix series Lemony Snicket’s A Series Of Unfortunate Events starring Neil Patrick Harris, and today we get a full trailer. If you've seen the movie or read the books by Daniel Handler you know the story. For the uninitiated, Lemony Snicket follows three orphans as they foil or escape the plans of Count Olaf (Harris). The series looks leaps and bounds better than the movie, and I can't watch it with my kid.

Lemony Snicket’s A Series Of Unfortunate Events comes to Netflix January 13th, 2017.

Watch: Eddie Redmayne Explains Why He's Proud to Be a Hufflepuff

0
0

Hufflepuff isn't a title too many take as a compliment. I know I always wanted to be a Gryffindor or, worst case scenario, a Ravenclaw, but never, ever a Hufflepuff. I think if it came down to it I would swear allegiance to Voldemort under my breath to the Sorting Hat just so he puts me in Slytherin instead of Hufflepuff.

After listening to Eddie Redmayne's passionate response as to why others should be a Hufflepuff, I'm still not swayed. I'm sorry I'm just not secure enough to be in a house that has a badger on its coat of arms. If you're a proud Hufflepuff, however, perhaps you'll feel better about your decision to be one after watching this. Fantastic Beasts And Where To Find Them opens tomorrow. Thanks to Slashfilm for the tip.

Paul Verhoeven Slams the Recently Announced STARSHIP TROOPERS Remake

0
0

Earlier this month is was announced that Columbia Pictures has started developing a remake of Starship Troopers. The new film will be a direct adaptation of the book that was written by Robert A. Heinlein

The first Starship Troopers film came from director Paul Verhoeven in 1997, and he actually went against what the book was when making his film. The original film has a pretty big fanbase, and Verhoeven isn't too thrilled about Columbia's plan for the new movie. In fact, in a recent interview with IndieWire, he slammed the idea, saying:

“It said in the article [that] the production team of that movie of the remake, that they would go back more and more towards the novel. And of course, we really, really tried to get away from the novel, because we felt that the novel was fascistic and militaristic. You feel that going back to the novel would fit very much in a Trump Presidency.”

I thought that was interesting because I think it would be great to see a direct adaptation of the novel. I'd think that's what the fans of the book would want to see! The director went on to explain why they went a different direction with their film saying that the idea behind 'Troopers' "was to create a story that 'seduced the audience' on one level, but then make it clear to the audience what they were admiring was actually evil." He further explained:

“Our philosophy was really different [from Heinlein’s book], we wanted to do a double story, a really wonderful adventure story about these young boys and girls fighting, but we also wanted to show that these people are really, in their heart, without knowing it, are on their way to fascism.”

At the time, Starship Troopers was one of the most expensive movies ever made. He revealed that the way he was able to get away with this and his vision for the film was because Sony Pictures was unstable during those years:

“We succeeded to do this movie, that is so subversive, and politically incorrect [because] Sony changed [leadership] every three, four months. Nobody looked at the rushes [dailies] because they had no time because they were fired every three, four months.  So we got away with it because nobody saw it.” Verhoeven added that once a Sony executive saw the film, she said to him, “but these are Nazi flags. I remember saying, ‘Yeah, but they are a different color, really.'”

Verhoeven's film will obviously always stand on its own because it's a unique take on the story that no one else will do. It'll be interesting to see how the studio actually does go about adapting the novel this time around. Is there anything you'd like to see them do with it?
