Hailee Steinfeld and Olivia Wilde Head to THE KEEPING ROOM in Civil War Drama

0
0

Here's another one of those projects that popped up at the American Film Market, but keeping in mind that an insane percentage of movies shopped there don't ever actually make it to production, this one sounds like it has the goods.

THR reports that True Grit star Hailee Steinfeld and Cowboys & Aliens actress Olivia Wilde will star in The Keeping Room for Harry Brown director Daniel Barber. It's a period piece that takes place during the Civil War, following two sisters and a slave (to be played by Shame star Nicole Beharie) who are forced to defend their Southern land from a group of Union soldiers who have broken off from the rest of their unit.

Barber definitely seems to be the right guy to tackle this project, considering Harry Brown also dealt with some of the same themes of standing up against injustice and taking a violent stand for what's right, and it'll be interesting to see how he transitions to a pure period piece for this one. Steinfeld is a fantastic young actress, and though Wilde is adored by the geek crowd, she hasn't proved herself as anything more than eye candy to me as of yet. (Harsh, I know. Apologies.) Here's hoping she can step her game up here.

It's interesting that this project is gaining some traction around the same time as Jane Got A Gun, the Natalie Portman-Michael Fassbender western that sees Portman defending her homestead against outlaws. Hollywood loves developing similar properties at the same time, so it makes sense, but we'll just have to wait and see if this one can make it through the gauntlet of production and if Barber and these actresses can bring us something memorable.

What do you think? Interested in seeing the director of Harry Brown tackle a potentially violent Civil War period piece like this one?

Lionsgate Developing WHEN FIRST WE WERE GODS

Lionsgate has hired Aron Eli Coleite (Drew Barrymore's The End) to write a big screen adaptation of the sci-fi short story When First We Were Gods by Rick Yancey. The studio has also brought in music video and commercial director Daniel Askill to develop it. He's worked on commercials for Cadillac, Xbox and Sony.

According to Deadline, in the story, "humanity has achieved immortality, but it is only available to an extraordinarily wealthy elite. While it is very common for people in the elite to marry and divorce, a man conspires to murder his immortal wife so that his mortal mistress can take her place — thus her immortality. Along the way comes the realization that mortality may well render the experience of love impossible."

Sounds a little like that Justin Timberlake film In Time. Does the concept behind this movie interest you at all?

Here's a couple of ads that Askill has directed to give you a taste of the director's style.

John Cusack to Star in Stephen King's CELL

It's been a long time since the feature film adaptation of Stephen King's zombie book Cell has been in the news. The last thing I remember was that Eli Roth was set to develop it, but that doesn't seem to be happening anymore. Cell was such a great zombie story, and I'm surprised it hasn't already been made into a movie! The book tells the story of a father who sets out on a journey to find his wife and son in the wake of a zombie type apocalypse that was brought on by mobile phones.

Screen Daily is now reporting that John Cusack is going to star in the the movie! This would be the third time that Cusack has worked on a Stephen King film project. He also worked on the films Stand By Me and 1408. I enjoy watching Cusack's movies, and I'm sure he'll be great in this movie!

As of right now is doesn't seem like there's a director attached, but King co-wrote the script with The Last House on the Left screenwriter Adam Alleca. It was also revealed that former Dimension Films president of production and 1408 executive producer Richard Saperstein will produce Cell through his Genre Company.

I have no doubt this is going to make for a great movie! What do you think about Cusack taking on the lead role?

Here's the description of the story from the book:

Artist Clayton Riddell had been in Boston negotiating a successful deal to sell his comic book project. His joy at finally hitting it big is shattered by an event called The Pulse which causes all those who were using their cell phones at the time of The Pulse to become zombies attacking and killing anyone in their way. Fortunately for Clay, he does not own a cell phone. In the panic to get out of Boston and find his way home to his wife and son in Maine, he is joined by Tom McCourt, a man he meets in the meleé immediately following The Pulse and a young girl, Alice, who they rescue from being killed by one of the “crazies.” The story follows their terrifying journey, avoiding capture—and worse—by the “crazies” who are beginning to “flock” and are led by one they call Raggedy Man as they attempt to reach Maine and a place called Kashwak which they hope will be their salvation.

Disney has released this great new piece of artwork created for Sam Raimi's epic vision of OZ. This art is the first section of a three-part image that gives us our first good look at the Wicked Witch of the West from Oz The Great and Powerful. This film looks visually stunning and I love everything I've seen from it so far. The movie stars James FrancoMila Kunis, Michelle Williams, Rachel Weisz and Zach Braff

The movie is set to be released on March 8th, 2013. What do you think of the image above? Are you looking forward to this movie? Click here to check out the trailer

Official Synopsis:

Disney’s fantastical adventure “Oz The Great and Powerful,” directed by Sam Raimi, imagines the origins of L. Frank Baum’s beloved character, the Wizard of Oz. When Oscar Diggs (James Franco), a small-time circus magician with dubious ethics, is hurled away from dusty Kansas to the vibrant Land of Oz, he thinks he’s hit the jackpot—fame and fortune are his for the taking—that is until he meets three witches, Theodora (Mila Kunis), Evanora (Rachel Weisz) and Glinda (Michelle Williams), who are not convinced he is the great wizard everyone’s been expecting. Reluctantly drawn into the epic problems facing the Land of Oz and its inhabitants, Oscar must find out who is good and who is evil before it is too late. Putting his magical arts to use through illusion, ingenuity—and even a bit of wizardry—Oscar transforms himself not only into the great and powerful Wizard of Oz but into a better man as well.

Air New Zealand and WETA Workshop have teamed up to create a very cool and funny Hobbit inspired airline safety video that features cameo appearances from Sir Peter Jackson and Andy Serkis. This is definitely the most entertaining in flight safety video I've seen, and it makes me wonder if other studios will start doing stuff like this to market their own films on certain airlines. Enjoy!

DESPICABLE ME 2 - Halloween Clip Featuring Minions

I wasn't a big fan of Despicable Me, and I don't really care to see Despicable Me 2, but I think these minion characters work fine for little shorts like this. It features a couple of minions checking out a creepy noise from the backyard. It give us a little hint at where we might expect to see the story go.

The movie stars the voices of Steve CarellAl Pacino, Kristen WiigMiranda CosgroveRussell BrandSteve Coogan and Ken Jeong.

Here's the Synopsis:

Universal Pictures and Illumination Entertainment’s worldwide blockbuster, Despicable Me, delighted audiences around the globe in 2010, grossing more than $540 million and becoming the 10th-biggest animated motion picture in U.S. history. In Summer 2013, get ready for more minion madness in Despicable Me 2. Chris Meledandri and his acclaimed filmmaking team create an all-new comedy animated adventure featuring the return of Gru (Steve Carell), the girls, the unpredictably hilarious minions…and a host of new and outrageously funny characters.

Daniel Craig Says a 2-Part James Bond Film is Impossible

0
0

Last week we learned that John Logan would be writing the 24th and 25th James Bond films, and that they would be connected, and tell one story, but according to Daniel Craig that isn't the case. In a recent interview with Filmstarts Craig said,

No, I don't know where that's come from. It's impossible to do a two parter, I heard that someone was talking about that we're doing a two parter, but that's the first I've heard about it. We can only do them one at a time, they take six months to shoot. You can't write one movie thinking about the next. All we're trying to do is get the next one sorted out and it'll stand on its own and if I'm able I'll do another one after that.

It doesn't sound like anyone has really talked to him about this yet, but it certainly isn't impossible. You can easily tell one long story and break it up into two films. I'm not quite sure Craig really understands what is going on. But it sounds to me like he might not want to do two Bond films back-to-back.

What we do know for sure is that the next film is scheduled to start production next fall at Pinewood Studios with a release date of fall 2014. I hope they end up doing a two-part story! It will be interesting to see what the facts are behind this two-part film news.

Dark Comedy Halloween Short - THE TIFFANY PROBLEM

Here's a fun Halloween short from writer/director Adam Green (Hatchet, Frozen) called The Tiffany Problem. It's a dark comedy made back in 2007 and it stars Joel David Moore (Hatchet, Dodgeball, Avatar), Corri English (Bedford Diaries), and Zachary Levi (Chuck).

The story follows a 30-year-old guy looking to go trick-r-treating with his friends while his wife stays home sick. She gets pissed off for going out, and he doesn't understand why she's trying to ruin his plans.

Enjoy the short, and Happy Halloween!

The Directors from THE RAID and HOBO WITH A SHOTGUN Sign Up for V/H/S/2

I really enjoyed the found footage horror anthology film V/H/S. It's not a movie for everyone, but I thought it was a lot of fun. I'm excited to report that not only will we be getting a sequel, but The Raid director Gareth Evans, The Blair Witch Project director Eduardo Sanchez and Hobo With a Shotgun director Jason Eisener have signed on to co-write and co-direct segments of V/H/S/2Timo Tjahjanto (Macabre), Adam Wingard (You’re Next and A Horrible Way to Die), Simon Barrrett (V/H/S writer) and Sanchez’s producing partner Gregg Hale will also direct segments of the movie!

This is such an incredible line-up of directors, and I can't wait to see what stories they end up bringing us next time around! The first V/H/S film followed a group of students hired to break into a run down house to find a lost VHS tape. We ended up seeing five of those V/H/S tapes, my favorite one being the Halloween set haunted house short.

According to THR, the sequel follows a similar structure, with a pair of investigators discovering a tape while looking for a student.

As much as I like V/H/S I like Trick 'r Treat more, and I would much rather see a sequel to that film! Hopefully one day it will happen. What was your favorite story told in V/H/S? Are you excited to hear that a sequel is being made?

Incredible Giant Zombie Pumpkin Carving

We've posted a fair amount of awesome pumpkin carvings throughout the month of October, but I saved the best for last! Here's an insanely badass giant pumpkin carving of a full sized zombie. The pumpkin sculpture was created by master pumpkin, toy and sand sculptor Ray Villafane and his radical team from Villafane Studios. The largest pumpkin they carved up weighed 1,872 pounds.

The Pumpkin Zombie is known as the Harvester, and as you can see he's pulling a few other pumpkin zombies right out of the ground by their pumpkin vines. It's amazing to see what people are doing with pumpkins these days.

Check out the process of creating this zombie scene in the videos! There's also more pictures below!

Disney Princess Jedis!

It was bound to happen right? Disney buys Lucasfilm and the fan art starts rolling in. To their credit though...I believe Naima did this well before the final papers were signed. In addition to the Jedis we also see a "Belle Solo" and "Slave Princess Esmeralda". Anything else you want to see? Follow the link to their page and make a request! I'm sure they would appreciate the love.

Will We See an AVENGERS Style STAR WARS Movie Universe!?

0
0

Yesterday was a huge day in movie geek history. Disney purchased LucasFilm from George Lucas for over $4 billion and announced that we will be getting a new Star Wars movie every two years starting in 2015 with episodes 7, 8, and 9.

There weren't a lot of details at the time on where the story would go, but there's been a lot of speculation as to what it could be, who would star in it, and who would direct it. It seems like a lot of fans want to see an adaptation of Timothy Zahn's 'Thrawn Trilogy', but it doesn't sound like that's what's going to happen .

E! Online has learned from a source at Lucasfilm that the new films won't be an adaptation of the books. Their source says that "it's an original story," which is still fine by me. I Loved Zahn's books, but I'm definitely up for more original Star Wars awesomeness! I want to see something that I haven't seen or read before.

What even cooler, is that THR is reporting that there's a possibility we will see an Avengers style movie universe with not only Lucas' planned final trilogy of films, but offshoot movies that will focus on individual characters! That my friends could be huge! It's an epic idea that I would love to see put into play! What Star Wars fan wouldn't want to see that!?

What do you think about this craziness? Do you like the idea of original Star Wars content, and building up the franchise the same way Marvel has?

International audiences are already enjoying Skyfall, and so far it's doing very well at the box office. It's already on track to make $100 million internationally. It seems like everyone that has seen it loves it! Here's a couple new TV spots for the 23rd James Bond film, and each one of them has a few bits of new footage.

Bond will be released in the U.S. on November 9th, 2012.

The script for the movie was written by previous Bond writers Neal Purvis and Robert Wade, as well as John Logan (Gladiator, Coriolanus). It stars Daniel Craig, Javier Bardem, Dame Judi Dench, Naomie Harris, Berenice Marlohe, Ralph Fiennes, Albert Finney, Ben Whishaw, Helen McCrory, Ola Rapace and Tonia Sotiropoulou.

Synopsis:

In SKYFALL, Bond’s loyalty to M (JUDI DENCH) is tested as her past returns to haunt her. 007 must track down and destroy the threat, no matter how personal the cost.

When Bond’s latest assignment goes gravely wrong and agents around the world are exposed, MI6 is attacked forcing M to relocate the agency. These events cause her authority and position to be challenged by Gareth Mallory (RALPH FIENNES), the new Chairman of the Intelligence and Security Committee. With MI6 now compromised from both inside and out, M is left with one ally she can trust: Bond. 007 takes to the shadows – aided only by field agent, Eve (NAOMIE HARRIS) – following a trail to the mysterious Silva (JAVIER BARDEM), whose lethal and hidden motives have yet to reveal themselves.

WRECK-IT RALPH Was an Awesomely Entertaining Movie!

0
0

For those of you who are just as excited to see Disney's new CG animated film Wreck-It Ralph as I was, you're in for an incredibly awesome treat. It will easily meet your expectations, and possibly exeed them. For those of you who aren't really all that interested in the movie, you need to go see it anyway! It's one of those films that could very well blow you away. In my opinion, it's easily one of the best non-Pixar animated films Disney has made since Lilo and Stitch

All of the characters had their own awesome charm, John C. Reilly as Wreck-It Ralph was amazing, there were a lot of layers to his character that the audience will love. Jane Lynch's Sergeant Calhoun, one of the main characters from Hero's Duty, had a much bigger role in the story than I expected, she was perfect, and offers a lot of comedic value to the film. There's a great back story to her character that gives us an explanation of why she is the way she is. Then there's Jack McBrayer as Fix-It Felix Jr., who was probably the least interesting character in the movie, but still played a big part in telling the story. I mean you can't have a videogame "bad guy" without its hero.

I absolutely loved the characters that we were introduced to in the movie, but it was Sarah Silverman's character, Vanellope von Schweetz, that just completely steals the movie. She's such an adorable character, and I wanted to see more of her. She's a lovable character that I think Disney should consider making a spin-off movie for.

The story and script for the film were also absolutely solid! It seriously played out just as good as a Pixar movie, and I think we have Disney's Chief Creative Officer, John Lasseter, to thank for that. You can tell, he implemented the same story techniques to create this movie that he used when he was over at Pixar. Of course, it was the talented work and vision of director Rich Moore and screenwriters Jennifer Lee and Phil Johnston that brought this amazingly fun film to life.

You've all seen the trailer for the film, so you basically know the story, but for those looking for a little run down, it follows a video game bad guy who is looking to be a hero so that he can fit in with the other characters in his game who don't really care for him because, well… he's bad. He ends up leaving his game and sets out on an epic journey to fulfill his dream of being a hero. Along the way he sets certain events in motion that could destroy the video games in the arcade in which he resides. He ends up making a few friends along the way that help him accept who he is and find the strength within himself to save his friends.

There's a lot of heart and emotion packed into the story, and you really care for the characters and what is going on. The movie is also extremely funny, and I loved all of the video game character cameos that were packed into the movie. It's pointless to talk about the animation at this point because Disney and Pixar have pretty much perfected the craft of CG animation.

So that's a big kid's point of view. This movie was first and foremost made for kids, and it's their thoughts and feelings that really count. I was lucky enough to bring my daughters to see the movie with me, and I can tell you that they absolutely loved it! They talked about it in the car ride home and they keep talking about it. They are already excited about seeing it again, and to be honest, I wouldn't mind taking them! It was just as much fun watching my kids' reaction to the movie as it was watching the movie. This is definitely a film that both parents and children will enjoy.

This was just such a well crafted film, and I have to say that it's one of my favorite movies of the year. Wreck-It Ralph is a movie you have to see! You'll be very happy you did! Whether you're excited about it or not, in the end, it's going to surprise you with its greatness! Just go see the movie!

Twistedly Cool Halloween Short Film - NO WAY OUT

0
0

Check out this terrifyingly awesome supernatural horror short film called "No Way Out" written by AICN's Eric Vespe a.k.a. Quint and directed by Kristoffer Aaron Morgan.

The movie stars A.J. Bowen (The Signal, The House of the Devil, You’re Next) who plays a man that is desperately trying to escape an isolated place full of creatures who torment him from the dark.

The movie played at Fantastic Fest last year, but now you can watch it online! "Now Way Out" was shot for less than $3000 in two days, and here's what Morgan had to say about it,

I wanted this to be a simple, visual horror poem about being paralyzed by your own thoughts. Working with AJ Bowen was pure movie making bliss. He blends professionalism and good natured humor perfectly while on set, making everything more relaxed.

I thought this was a great horror short, and I hope you enjoy it! Happy Halloween! I will warn you, it's pretty brutal.

TERMINATOR 2 - Never Before Seen Stan Winston Set Photos and Concept Art!

Here's an awesome collection of exclusive behind the scenes photos from James Cameron's classic 1991 film Terminator 2 from Stan Winston's special effects work shop that have never been seen before! This was such an incredible and iconic sci-fi film, and I want to thank Stan Winston School for sending these photos to us to share with you all for Halloween!

We've got some great shots of some of the special effects used in the film. The photos show James Cameron and Arnold Schwarzenegger side by side shooting the Terminator's cyborg hand. There's also several images of some Schwarzenegger bust sculpts used for the film, a piece of concept art, and a couple others -- one of which includes a sculpt of Linda Hamilton screaming in terror. This must have been such a cool project to work on!

I miss seeing practical special effects being used in films. I freakin' love this kind of stuff! I can't wait to see what other kinds of historic film special effects treasures end up being released by the Stan Winston School of awesomeness! I hope you enjoy seeing these Terminator 2 photos just as much as I did!

Imogen Poots Cast as Female Lead in NEED FOR SPEED

0
0

Fright Night actress Imogen Poots has been cast in the lead female role in DreamWorks big screen adaptation of the video game Need For Speed. She joins Breaking Bad's Aaron Paul who was cast in the film earlier this month.

From what we know of the movie, it will tell an original story that is not based on an individual game. It is described as being a "fast-paced, high-octane film rooted in the tradition of the great car culture films of the 70s while being extremely faithful to the spirit of the video game franchise. In Need for Speed, the cars are hot, the racing is intense and the story keeps players at the edge of their seat."

Act of Valor director Scott Waugh is developing the film based on a script written by George and John Gatins. The movie is set to start shooting next year and will be released on February 7th 2014.

With the promising cast they've assembed so far, I'm looking forward to seeing how this movie turns out.
