Owen Willson and Ed Helms has teamed up for a new comedy called Bastards, and we've got the first trailer here for you to check out. The story follows two brothers who go on a journey to find their dad. It looks like a solidly funny movie worth checking out. The film also has a great supporting cast that includes Glenn Close and J.K. Simmons.

Helms and Wilson play Peter and Kyle Reynolds, two brothers whose eccentric mother (Glenn Close) raised them to believe their father had died when they were young. When they discover this to be a lie, they set out to find their real father, learning more about their mother than they probably ever wanted to know.

The film was directed by Lawrence Sher, who was the cinematographer of The Hangover films. This is his first time actually directing a film. The film will also have appearances by Terry Bradshaw (as himself), Katt WilliamsJune SquibbKate Aselton, and Ving RhamesBastards opens up in theaters on January 27th.

Taika Waititi Addresses Doctor Strange's Possible Appearance in THOR: RAGNAROK

Not long ago some photos surfaced from the set of Thor: Ragnarok that teased a connection to Doctor Strange. In the photo, Thor is holding a piece of paper with the address, "177A Bleecker St," which is the address of Doctor Strange's Sanctum Sanctorum in Greenwich Village, New York. This led us to believe that maybe Thor and Loki were going to visit the Sorcerer Supreme for some help.

During a recent interview with Digital Spy, director Taika Waititi was asked if Doctor Strange would be making an appearance in the film. Of course, he played coy about the whole thing, so we still don't know for sure if Stange will be in the film or not.

"Ohhh I don't know. I am not sure if... I don't know actually. I can't comment on it. It may have just been something for the fans."

He was then asked if Benedict Cumberbatch will make a cameo in Ragnarok, to which Waititi replied:

"Might be something like that. Might be a little tease. Or maybe a tease just for people who wanted to zoom into that photo."

One thing he didn't say in his response was, "No. he's not in the movie." So the possibility is still open for Strange to show up, which would be awesome. I hope that it happens!

Thor: Ragnarok hits theaters on November 3rd, 2017.

Fox has released a new trailer and nine clips for the upcoming third season of Gotham, which comes with the subtitle "Mad City." As you'll see in the trailer, it looks like things really do get crazy this season, and I can't wait to see where this upcoming season leads these characters.

In the clips, we see Bruce Wayne addressing the board of directors of his company; Jim Gordon getting grilled by the reporter, Valerie Vale, at a bar; and Penguin interrupting a press conference at the GCPD to reveal that Fish Mooney is leading an army of escaped crazy people.

The other four promo clips focus on certain characters of the series including Bullock, Selina Kyle, Nathaniel Barnes, Barbara and Tabitha, Jim Gordon, and Fish Mooney.

Here's the synopsis for the upcoming premiere episode, which is set to air on Monday, September 19th:

Gordon works in a monster-ridden Gotham as a bounty hunter and seeks to find answers about the Indian Hill escapees, and why their powers appear to be killing them. Meanwhile, Bruce's doppelganger roams the streets, and Barbara and Tabitha open a new nightclub called The Sirens in the all-new "Mad City: Better to Reign in Hell... "
Season Three will peel back the curtain on the infamous criminal organization known as the Court of The Owls. With the Indian Hill escapees on the loose, JIM GORDON must take matters into his own hands as a bounty hunter in Gotham. He makes it his mission to find HUGO STRANGE, the mastermind behind the horrifying Indian Hill experiments, and FISH MOONEY, one of Strange’s subjects. Meanwhile, GCPD Detective HARVEY BULLOCK and Captain NATHANIEL BARNES remain at the forefront of the fight against crime in the monster-ridden city. Also, BRUCE WAYNE, with the help of his trusted butler and mentor, ALFRED PENNYWORTH, and former Wayne Enterprises employee, LUCIUS FOX, discovers there are still more secrets to uncover regarding his parents’ murders.

These International STAR WARS: ROGUE ONE Posters Are Terrible, Fans Deserve Better

these-international-posters-for-star-wars-rogue-one-are-terrible

A couple new international posters have surfaced for Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. I've seen a bunch of sites post them saying how awesome and great they are. These are official posters for Japan (above) and South Korean (below) that were tweeted by the official Star Wars Twitter account, but to me, they look like cheap-ass photoshop jobs.

Look, I'm insanely excited for this movie! I'm more excited for it than I was for The Force Awakens, but I'm not going to let that excitement blind me to bad marketing and poorly designed posters. They basically took images we're already very familiar with and awkwardly threw them together, and they do nothing to evoke any kind of excitement.

Why aren't they doing anything fun with these?! Posters are supposed to be exciting and energetic. I hate to say that these are just boring and plain. I remember the days when all the Star Wars posters that were released domestically and internationally actually packed a punch. I included some of the older Japanese and South Korea posters that were released for the original trilogy back in the day below.

Why can't fans around the world get cool posters with some actual effort put into developing them? Come on! This is Star Wars! There's a legacy of awesomeness that comes with this franchise. Let's ramp things up and get fans even more pumped for the movie by creating badass posters that we'd want to frame and hang on our walls because that what the fans want.

Michael Giacchino Takes Over Scoring Duties For ROGUE ONE: A STAR WARS STORY

$

There's a disturbance in The Force.

Composer Alexandre Desplat, who won an Oscar for the music for Wes Anderson's The Grand Budapest Hotel, was originally slated to create the score for Gareth Edwards' Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. This was a momentous announcement, considering no one aside from John Williams has ever composed music for a live-action theatrical Star Wars movie. But now that job is going to someone else.

THR reports that Michael Giacchino, the Oscar-winning composer of The Incredibles, Up, Star Trek, Lost, and more, has now come on board to score the film, just three months before its release. Apparently the well-publicized reshoots for Rogue One "altered the scoring calendar," and Desplat is no longer available, so Giacchino stepped in. Both are great composers, so I don't think this is necessarily an upgrade or a downgrade — more of a lateral move that will hopefully result in some awesome new music for the new film.

I've always considered Giacchino to be the natural follow-up choice for the Star Wars universe when Williams either passes away or steps down from composing, so I imagined Giacchino only handling the main saga movies, not the spin-offs. I liked the idea of getting someone other than Williams in to do the standalone films just to add another layer of separation between them and the saga films, so I wonder if Giacchino will ultimately end up scoring both types of these franchise movies, or if he'll stick to the standalones in the future.

Giacchino has Doctor Strange coming up in November, but I'll be seeing him perform music from Lost (which I consider to be the best work of his career thus far) at a Lost Live concert later this month, so stay tuned to GeekTyrant for a write-up about that. Rogue One: A Star Wars Story hits theaters on December 16, 2016.

Watch: 2 Guys in T-Rex Suits Battle in The Thunderdome

On a list of things you didn't expect to see on a Friday, make sure to add this. At Burning Man (according to Youtube comments, I think it looks more like Wasteland Weekend) two men met under the Thunderdome to battle to the death. They chose to do so in T-Rex suits with foam swords while they swung from a suspension swing.

As you watch this, imagine the amount of time that went into this event. Think about how long it took to set up the cage, the swing system, and find two people willing to go through this activity. Then think about how someone came up with this...because I'd really like to know how you think this event came to be!

Thanks Geekologie for showing us this.

PUNISHER: WAR ZONE Director to Direct Film About Former WWE Wrestler Chris Benoit

Lexi Alexander will tackle the bizarre and horrifying story behind Chris Benoit in the biographical film Crossface. Slashfilm writes film itself will be based heavily on the book Ring of Hell: The Story of Chris Benoit and the Fall of the Pro Wrestling Industry by Matthew Randazzo V. Of course, many are familiar with the story of the WCW/WWE wrestler who was later found to have tortured and murdered his wife and 7-year-old son after all three were found dead in their home.

The book focuses mainly on Benoit's 22-year career in wrestling and how a man so well liked and known for loving his family could turn on a dime so quickly. Years later, it was shown that Benoit was likely suffering from CTE and that he had the mental functionality of an 88-year-old man with Alzheimers.

Don't expect WWE to be promoting this film, as they've censored Benoit from their wrestling history altogether, even going so far as to remove him from matches and story lines within their history and refusing to acknowledge his accolades within the brand.

Anyone interested in seeing this? As a wrestling fan who came into the sport before and after his era, it would be interesting to see how he was viewed before the murder. From what I hear it was almost impossible for those that knew him to believe that he would do such a thing.

PACIFIC RIM 2 Casts Unknown Actress Cailee Spaeny as Female Lead

If you're like me, you've never seen an indie film called Counting to 1,000, so you probably haven't heard of actress Cailee Spaeny. But Variety reports that the actress (and pop singer) has been cast as the female lead in the highly-anticipated Pacific Rim 2.

Daredevil showrunner Steven S. DeKnight took over the director's chair from producer Guillermo del Toro, and he's already cast John Boyega (as Stacker Pentecost's [Idris Elba's] son) and Scott Eastwood in major roles. We know Charlie Hunnam won't be back, although del Toro has promised that "a lot of the cast from the first movie is coming back." Other plot and character details are few and far between, so we basically know nothing about who Spaeny will be playing here.

So this happened.... 😳 Super excited to start working on this epic project. Next? Australia!

Jonah Hill Cancels French Tour for WAR DOGS After Insulting Interview

Jonah Hill has cancelled his appearances for the rest of his French tour promoting War Dogs after a bizarre interview on the television show Le Grand Journal. Business Insider states in the interview, Hill is berated by host Ornella Fleury. It got pretty brutal pretty quick with Fleury saying the following...

"It's when I saw you get sodomized by a 3-meter tall demon in This Is The End that I told myself THAT is the man of my dreams.”

Hill clearly gets defensive and fires back, "I hear you get sodomized pretty often." My guess is that wasn't translated back to the host as she continues...

"My sexual fantasy would be that we would meet up in a hotel room at night. We would chat, you'd make me laugh, you'd make me laugh a lot...and then all of a sudden you'd bring your friends Leo DiCaprio and Brad Pitt… and then you would leave."

Fleury did later apologize for her actions on the show after Hill cancelled the rest of his French tour, stating that she shouldn't have treated him as if he were her friend and recognized him as a legitimate actor.

I already know as I'm posting this that there's gonna be some hate on Hill in the comments saying he sucks, but I for one have a lot of respect for the guy for how he's built his career from goofy teen movies to Oscar-caliber films. Not a lot of people do that, and not a lot of people CAN do that.

Vincent D'Onofrio Teases Kingpin's Return in Marvel's Netflix Shows

Fans loved Vincent D'Onofrio's performance as Wilson Fisk, aka The Kingpin, in the first season of Marvel's Netflix series Daredevil. He didn't have as big of an impact in season two, but in a new interview with Latino Review, the actor is teasing the character's return in a future Marvel show. But which one?

First, D'Onofrio mentioned that he isn't signed to a multi-season contract like some of the other actors (misspellings are LR's):

"Marvel, the company, and especially Jeff Loeb, who runs Marvel Television, he's a clever dude. All those people over there are pretty clever and they love talent. There's no giant commitment for me at Daredevil. Like I didn't have to sign my life away at all. When Jeff tells me there's something coming up and if I'm available, I'll be there. And because it's written so well, I'm going to show up. I'm going to do everything I can because the writing is so good. And then there's a company like Netflix and they're not pressuring you either. They just want good material, good content. They give you money to make good content, so they're not pressuring actors to sign their life away either.... I think that there's this common ground where they say, 'Look, if the material is good are you going to show up?' and I said,  'Definitely'."

Guys: the man's name is "Jeph" Loeb, not "Jeff." Putting that aside, D'Onofrio teased that he knows when the Kingpin will be back:

"That I can't answer. I do know, but I can't answer... so take that how you will. Jeff and Charlie (Cox) and Netflix love Kingpin, and so, Kingpin is good for Marvel's television stuff and I think they agree."

The most obvious show for him to pop back up seems to be The Defenders, but since all of these shows take place in New York City, there's a chance he could make an appearance in...well, really in any of them (including a possible surprise appearance in Luke Cage, which hits the streaming service on September 30th). In which show do you think Kingpin will make his next appearance? Place your bets in the comments.

Bizarre First Trailer For THE ALCHEMIST COOKBOOK

Oscilloscope Laboratories is responsible for bringing some offbeat, strange movies to larger audiences. They're the ones who have given movies like Exit Through The Gift Shop, Bellflower, Samsara, and Meek's Cutoff either theatrical or home video releases, and their latest film looks way more "out there" than those films. Here's the trailer for Joel Potrykus' The Alchemist Cookbook, a trippy-looking movie about a guy living alone out in the woods who starts messing with chemicals and eventually encounters Satan (yep). I don't know if this is something I'll be checking out personally, but I'm sure some of you will dig the stylized weirdness you'll find here.

There's no official release date set, but you can pre-order the movie for $14.99 on Oscilloscope's website right here. What do you think?

Young outcast Sean has isolated himself in a trailer in the woods, setting out on alchemic pursuits, with his cat Kaspar as his sole companion. Filled with disdain for authority, he’s fled the daily grind and holed up in the wilderness, escaping a society that has no place for him. But when he turns from chemistry to black magic to crack nature’s secret, things go awry and he awakens something far more sinister and dangerous.

Mind Blown: You Have To See This Jaw-Dropping GAME OF THRONES Cosplay

When I first saw this photo, I didn't think anything of it. "So what? It's Peter Dinklage in costume as Tyrion Lannister from Game of Thrones." My brain practically melted out of my ears when I realized this isn't actually Dinklage, it's Omar Diego Milla Machuca doing what has to be the greatest, most convincing GOT cosplay of all time (via Kotaku). The costume, the makeup, the hair...this is unreal.

The other day, a friend pointed me to a video online that featured an actor who, for one quick second, looked exactly like me. It was such a close resemblance, I briefly considered the possibility that I had somehow acted in this video and then had my mind wiped afterward. It was that spot-on. Dinklage has to feel that way looking at this photo (which was taken by photographer Lenin Tadeo Rodriguez). It's gotta be like looking in a digital mirror. I don't know what Machuca does for a living, but if I were him, I'd try to reach out to Dinklage's people about being a stand-in for the actor on upcoming projects.

Todd McFarlane Offers SPAWN Movie Details, Describes Spawn as a Boogeyman

Yep, Todd McFarlane is still talking about the Spawn movie that he's been developing for years. There's been an awful lot of talk, but no action. I hope one day he does actually get to make this movie, but I'm not holding my breath.

During an upcoming episode of the AMC series Geeking Out, Kevin Smith and Tiffany Smith spoke to McFarlane about the potential film and managed to get some additional information out of him. ComicBook.com got a clip from that episode in which the conversation surrounding Spawn takes place.

McFarlane said a lot of stuff that we've already heard before, like that the film will be a complete reboot and not a sequel to the 1997 film adaptation. He also confirmed that the movie will be rated R and that the script he's written is "scary and "badass." He went on to once again describe Spawn as the Jaws of the movie, saying:

"The world's going to be real, except for one thing that's going to move. You're never going to see a dude in a rubber suit....This is going to be my Jaws shark."

He explained his vision for the character, describing him as the boogeyman, and also shared some of the things that we will not see in the movie:

"In the background, there’s this thing moving around, this boogeyman. That boogeyman just happens to be something that you and I, intellectually, know is Spawn. Will he look like he did in the first movie? No. Will he have a supervillain he fights? No. He’s going to be the spectre, the ghost."

I've always liked this concept, and I really do think it would make an incredibly cool Spawn movie. McFarlane has completed the script but is currently editing it because it's too long. Who knows if this movie will ever happen, but if it does I'll be extremely happy! I've been a fan of Spawn since it debuted in 1992, and the property deserves a great film.

Meet Wong in Brief DOCTOR STRANGE TV Spot

We've seen a lot of footage from Marvel's Doctor Strange, but we haven't seen much from Benedict Wong's character, whose name is...Wong. The actor has previously explained that his character has been revamped considerably from the "tea-making manservant" to a drill sergeant type of guy who is one of the "masters of sorcery."

Director Scott Derrickson recently spoke with the New York Daily News about Wong, and how he was originally not even going to be in the movie at all:

I was very happy with [casting Tilda Swinton as The Ancient One], but I was also very conscious that in doing that I was erasing a significant potential Asian role. I was going to leave Wong out of the movie at first; he was an Asian sidekick manservant, what was I supposed to do with that? But once the decision was made to cast Tilda, we brought Wong back because, unlike the Ancient One, he could be completely subverted as a character and reworked into something that didn’t fall into any of the stereotypes of the comics.

This movie has received some controversy over its casting (or lack thereof) for Asian actors, but this is the first time I'm hearing about how they reworked the story to include a revamped Wong as a subverted presence in the movie. It sounds like they were at least making an effort to step in the right direction here, and we'll find out how it all works in the film when Doctor Strange arrives on November 4, 2016.

MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE 6 is Back Up and Running Again, and Tom Cruise Will Be Back

$

A little while ago, Paramount Pictures put Mission: Impossible 6 on hold while they negotiated with star Tom Cruise about his fee for returning to the franchise. Cruise reportedly wanted more money and was apparently holding out for a higher percentage of backend fees. We're not sure exactly how those conversations turned out, but in any case, THR reports that Cruise is "on the verge of closing his deal to return" as Ethan Hunt in the new movie. Let's face it: this is one of the few legitimate franchises Paramount has at this point, and it's not like they have a lot of other stuff going on, so they might as well pay Cruise what he's asking for and watch the box office dollars roll in.

We know that Mission: Impossible Rogue Nation breakout Rebecca Ferguson is returning to reprise her role as Ilsa Faust in the new film, writer/director Christopher McQuarrie is coming back to write the screenplay for the sixth entry, and he's going to try to push himself more as a filmmaker this time around (it's still unclear if he's also directing this one). Chances seem pretty high that Simon Pegg, Ving Rhames, and Jeremy Renner will be back as well, and I'm really hoping Alec Baldwin comes back just so he can deliver more amazing lines like referring to Ethan Hunt as "the living manifestation of destiny."

All parties are looking at spring 2017 as the new start date, which means we probably won't see the finished film until sometime in 2018.

Review: THE MAGNIFICENT SEVEN is a Major Misfire

$
0
0

As Hollywood continues its obsession with remaking and rebooting classic films, the conversation will continue about the best and worst examples of this phenomenon. John Carpenter's The Thing and David Cronenberg's The Fly are consistently raised as examples of how to do it correctly, while more recent remakes like Total Recall and RoboCop are widely seen as wastes of time that give their predecessors a bad name. Antoine Fuqua's The Magnificent Seven falls into the latter camp. It's a soulless retread that not only fails to justify its existence, but fails to excite, inspire, charm, or otherwise elicit any emotion aside from contempt. This may be one of the most tedious action movies I've ever seen.

It's easy to understand how executives might think this could work. The Magnificent Seven is a well-liked movie (with a kickass theme song) that's already a remake of Akira Kurosawa's Seven Samurai, so a modern remake is, in theory, an excellent showcase for a handful of today's charismatic actors to ride horses, wear cool clothes, spin six-guns around their fingers, and blow stuff up. Throw in actors like Denzel Washington, Chris Pratt, Ethan Hawke, Vincent D'Onofrio, and Byung-hun Lee, and it seems like a no-brainer, right? The trouble is, with a barely passable script by True Detective's Nic Pizzolatto and Richard Wenk, and atrocious direction by Fuqua, the movie actually is a no-brainer — the best way to describe the film may be comparing it to a zombie corpse shambling around in a cowboy costume.

Rarely have I seen a mainstream studio movie that looks so profoundly ugly. Mauro Fiore's cinematography, which seems to be occasionally dragged through a honey-yellow filter, is practically overflowing with close-ups; while western master Sergio Leone used them to build tension, Fuqua uses them as his default framing for normal conversations. There's no additional layer of meaning to be gleaned by this film's camera placement, and absolutely no power in the visual storytelling. Fuqua has done something impressive here: he's chosen the most mediocre way possible to shoot this movie. It's functional, but there's nothing to it.

Great films give you the sense that their directors had so much passion for that story that they'd die if they weren't able to tell it their way. I don't know why Fuqua was hired to direct this movie, but at no point did I ever see anything that indicated he had any passion for telling this story. This feels like director-for-hire work of the worst kind. But that alone shouldn't be enough to destroy this movie. I'm sure there have been plenty of iconic films which had journeyman directors come in, do their work, and clock out, and those movies became iconic because of a terrific script or great performances. That's not the case here. The cast, which has tremendous potential to be charismatic, funny, and fun together (like Ocean's Eleven on horseback), is held hostage by a script that's more concerned with dully setting up its exhausting climactic battle than making us care about anyone who will be involved with it.

You know the story, so I won't go into the details. Washington and Pratt are fine, but Haley Bennett comes off as little more than a Jennifer Lawrence knock off. D'Onofrio adopts one of the most bizarre accents I've heard in years, and Hawke barely registers as a frazzled Confederate soldier with PTSD. Peter Sarsgaard's comically over-the-top villain is so one dimensional it would have worked just as well to replace him with a life-sized cardboard cut-out of him in all of his scenes. Almost no one has a satisfying arc, and when it finally comes down to a mano y mano battle at the very end, the movie cops out and doesn't answer the only interesting moral question raised in the whole thing.

Once the shooting starts, you'll be astonished at how many faceless bad guys meet their doom. I went into this movie thinking it might not be great, but at least hoping to see some entertaining shootouts; Fuqua couldn't even deliver on that front, because every action scene feels eternal. So many bullets fly that you become numb to the chaos. Watching the movie becomes a waiting game, an endurance test to see if you can stay awake through the predictable, monotonous shootouts to see if anything interesting happens afterward. Spoiler alert — nothing does.

In one scene, Pratt's character watches a group of untrained townspeople learn how to fire guns to defend their town from the bad guys. After they all shoot at their targets and miss, he quips something about how "Statistically speaking, at least one of them should have hit something." It's an apt metaphor for this movie as a whole. Statistically speaking — considering the sheer amount of talent involved here — they should have been able to generate at least a few worthwhile moments. But Fuqua and company couldn't hit the filmmaking equivalent of the broad side of a barn at ten paces.
