Dolph Lundgren Coming to ARROW, FLASH and SUPERGIRL Villains Revealed, and Kevin Smith Directing

It’s been rumored for awhile that The Flash and Supergirl would be getting a musical crossover, but that was recently confirmed yesterday in a report we posted. There’s more interesting news that has come out the TCA press tour event regarding these shows as well as Arrow that I think you might be interested in learning.

It was announced that one of the new villains to face off against The Flash will be Savitar. This is another speedster character that can move his body at near light speed and can absorb motion from other objects and people, which slows their movement.

Supergirl will bring in Miss Martian and Mon-El as new character additions. They will be played by Sharon Leal and Chris Wood, respectively. Miss Martian is a part of the Teen Titans team, and she comes to Earth to follow in the footsteps of the Martian Manhunter. “She struggles with her past as a member of a race which is not trusted or well-regarded on Earth.” Mon-El was an explorer from the planet Daxam in the comics and sacrificed himself to save Earth. He was a member of the Justice League and a friend of Superman.

On top of that, Kevin Smith has been confirmed to direct at least one episode of The Flash and Supergirl.

dolph-lundrgen-arrow

As far as Arrow goes, action film icon Dolph Lundgren is set to appear on the series. According to the reports, he will be involved with Russia-set flashback sequences that will be featured this season. Executive producer Marc Guggenheim also revealed that this will be the final season of flashbacks on the series.

The Flash, Supergirl, and Arrow are all set to premiere on The CW this October. The Flash will premiere on Tuesday, October 4th, Arrow is coming on Wednesday, October 5th, and Supergirl hits Monday, October 10th

Ok, you’ve got to check out this Grummgar cosplay, who is a character that was briefly featured in Star Wars: The Force Awakens. The cosplay was created by Julian Checkley of Order 66 Creatures & Effects, and he was showing the costume off at Star Wars Celebration Europe. Below you’ll find some photos of the Grummgar cosplay, as well as a couple of videos so you can see it in action. The cosplay ended up winning first place at the cosplay competition at the Star Wars event, and it was definitely deserved.

The photos you see here were taken by Kamil Krawczak, and Checkley was accompanied by model Valentina L’Abbate as Bazine Netal.

James Wan Provides Update on the MORTAL KOMBAT Reboot

The beloved fighting franchise Mortal Kombat is making headlines again, as further news of its development continues. During the press tour for the new CBS MacGyver series, IGN caught up with Mortal Kombat producer James Wan and he gave us some insight into where they are with the development. While providing a positive response, it was clear that this property isn’t being rushed along to be released, and it may be a while. You can find an excerpt of the interview below:

“The key here is to try and do it right. I don't want to rush into it. So right now, we're just trying to take our time to make sure it's heading in the right direction. I think that's more important than trying to rush through it and pump up something that no one likes. I love the characters. I think they’re such colorful characters. It’s such an amazing take on, basically, ‘Enter the Dragon.’ It’s that fantasy version, the video game version, of ‘Enter the Dragon.’ And in doing so, they ended up creating such interesting characters and I think that is such a cool world to explore. This really mythical, bigger world that lives on another dimension on top of ours. I think that’s really fun to play with and so we’ll see.”

I like that! With the massive amount of options as a moviegoer, I would much rather New Line Cinema and Wan take their time in ensuring the script and characters are being developed properly. Mortal Kombat means a lot to fans and has a huge nostalgia factor, so if this is done right, it could be a big success. It’s also worth noting that originally Kevin Tancharoen, director and creator of the Mortal Kombat Legacy series was in talks to helm the reboot but is no longer involved. Currently, the director’s chair is left open. The anticipation for this has been unreal! How do you guys feel about movies that get postponed (like Gambit) or have a little bit longer of a development in return for a higher quality product?

Seth Rogen Is Developing a Comedy Series about the Singularity Theory

$

Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg have found success in TV with their AMC series Preacher, which was one hell of a wild ride of insanity. They’ve got another project in the works that sounds like it has promise.

It’s a comedy series being developed for FX and it’s a series that revolves around the singularity. Rogen briefly talked about the pilot he was working on while he was a guest on the Nerdist podcast. He told them:

“We have a pilot for FX that we’re gonna shoot that we’re working on right now. We’re working on the script right now and we’re going to film that in the next year basically.”

The project might be called The Singularity, and it didn’t sound like Rogen was sure if the project was officially announced or not. Since I've never heard about it until now, I'd say it hasn't been officially announced. When Chris Hardwick asked if it was, Rogen said:

“I don’t know if it is, I think it is? I don’t know if it is… It’s about Singularity”

He went on to offer this bit of additional information:

“It’s about artificial intelligence, it’s a half-hour comedy about the singularity basically. And I won’t say anything else because I honestly don’t know if it’s [been announced].”

For those of you not familiar with what the singularity is, it’s a hypothesis that was pursued by futurist Ray Kurzweil. Here’s an explanation of it thanks to Wiki:

According to this hypothesis, an upgradable intelligent agent (such as a computer running software-based artificial general intelligence) would enter a ‘runaway reaction’ of self-improvement cycles, with each new and more intelligent generation appearing more and more rapidly, causing an intelligence explosion and resulting in a powerful superintelligence that would, qualitatively, far surpass all human intelligence. Science fiction author Vernor Vinge said … that this would signal the end of the human era, as the new superintelligence would continue to upgrade itself and would advance technologically at an incomprehensible rate. Futurist Ray Kurzweil predicts the singularity to occur around 2045 whereas Vinge predicts some time before 2030.

When the conversation on the podcast moved into this kind of technology, Rogen said:

“Oh, it happening, it super scary and we’re trying to make a comedy about it.”

Rogen is a pretty funny dude. He’s a solid writer who knows comedy, so if anyone can effectively turn this subject into a comedy series it’s him. It’ll be interesting to see what comes of it! For more information on the singularity, watch the video below:

Artist Alex Cho has created a fantastically fun series of fan art for Stranger Things, Game of Thrones, Harry Potter, and more. The art has a great cartoon-like style to it that I think many of you will enjoy. Cho is a visual development artist at Sony Pictures Animation, and I guess he just wanted to express his fandom for the shows and films that he enjoys.

Teaser Trailer for Robert Zemeckis' WWII Spy Thriller ALLIED with Brad Pitt

$

Robert Zemeckis is a wonderfully talented filmmaker and a great storyteller. As a film fan, when he makes a movie I get excited about what he's going to deliver. This is the guy who brought us films such as Who Framed Roger Rabbit, The Back to the Future trilogy, Forrest Gump, Castaway, and most recently The Walk, which was incredible!

His next movie is a World War II spy thriller called Allied, which stars Brad Pitt and Marion Cotillard. Paramount Pictures has released the first teaser trailer for the film today, and it looks fantastic! I enjoy these kinds of films because I'm a big WWII history buff, and it looks like Zemeckis has made another great movie.

Allied follows Max Vatan (Pitt) and Marianne Beausejour (Cotillard), two assassins who fall in love during a mission in Casablanca in 1942 to kill a German ambassador. A future together, however, is thrown into tumult when twisty secrets from their pasts cast doubts on their love for each other.

The movie also stars Lizzy Caplan (The Interview), Matthew Goode (Watchmen), Raffey Cassidy (Tomorrowland), Charlotte Hope (Game of Thrones), and Jared Harris (Mad Men). The script was written by Steven Knight (Locke, Eastern Promises), and it will be released in theaters on November 23rd.

After 20 Years, Ash Ketchum May Finally Win The Pokemon League

It sounds like the impossible will finally happen for Ash Ketchum. Kotaku writes the protagonist of the long-running Pokemon anime may finally capture his first championship victory of the Pokemon League in an upcoming Japanese episode. You can see the preview for the episode below:

It's hard to believe that this show has been running since the mid '90s and Ash is still trying to win a major title in the Pokemon League! I remember watching his first tournament and getting upset when Charizard refused to listen to Ash and he was disqualified:

It's been a long time since I've watched an AMV, haha. I'm really rooting for Ash to win this one out even though I haven't watched since the Johto league! Win one for the folks in Pallet!

If you haven't watched the series since the '90s, it's kind of amazing how much the show has changed visually!

It'll be about six days before we find out if Ash wins, so keep your fingers crossed!

Review: KUBO AND THE TWO STRINGS is Filmmaking and Storytelling Perfection

review-kubo-and-the-two-strings-is-filmmaking-and-storytelling-perfection

I was blown away by the first trailer I saw for Laika's upcoming film Kubo and the Two Strings. It looked like the kind of movie I knew I would enjoy. Like many of you, I'm a huge fan of what Laika has been doing with their films. Coraline, ParaNorman, and The Boxtrolls have all been wonderfully made films, and if you enjoyed any of those you are going to absolutely love Kubo and the Two Strings!

What I love about the films that Laika produces is that they are made with true physical art. All of the Laika films are stop-motion animated, and everything that we see on the big screen is a real tangible work of art that was meticulously crafted by a team of artists and designers and then those characters and set pieces are painstakingly brought to life one frame at a time. It's incredible to see the amount of care and detail that is put into the creation of these films.

Laika has perfected the craft of stop-motion filmmaking, and their latest film Kubo and the Two Strings is by far the best film they have made so far! Not only is it awesomely designed and exquisitely animated, but it tells a story that was also perfectly crafted.

The film tells the harrowing and emotional tale of a boy named Kubo whose left eye was ripped from his head when he was only a baby. There is a detailed history about that and how it works into the story, but I won't spoil it for you. The basic premise of the story is that Kubo embarks on an epic journey to solve the mystery of what happened to his father, who was a legendary samurai warrior. In the process, he has to collect a magical set of armor that includes The Sword Unbreakable, The Armor Impenetrable, and The Helmet Invulnerable. Along the way, he meets two characters named Monkey and Beetle who help him throughout his adventure. As he searches for the armor, Kubo is being hunted down by two witch sisters who want to take his one remaining eye from him. On top of that, each piece of armor that he collects comes with a dangerous challenge.

Kubo is one of my favorite original characters that has been brought to life on the big screen in years. You just can't help but instantly like the kid, and he has such a cool magical power of telling stories with his guitar and origami art. He also has an insanely charming personality. He's very nice, well-mannered, but he's tough and knows how to survive. He's been forced to live in such a hard and challenging situation due his family's dark past.

All of the characters in the film are great as well! Monkey and Beetle are characters that are included to protect Kubo and keep him safe from the dangers he faces. Two of those dangers are the twin sister witches out to take Kubo's other eye. These witches are creepy as hell, and they are absolutely brutal and heartless. There's also one other villain named The Moon King. I won't get into his role in the story, but he plays a main role in Kubo's life.

Kubo and the Two Strings offers an explosion of emotions that includes feelings of danger, fear, sadness, and pure joy. I love movies that bring emotions out in me, and there were plenty of times when I was overwhelmed with them while watching this. The film really tugs on the heartstrings, and I'm sure the story will bring many of you to tears.

This is a very deep and adult story that is told in a way that kids will also enjoy and understand. It has everything thing that we love about the movies including drama, adventure, comedy, and action.

Even though I give a lot of positive reviews for films, I rarely call a movie perfect. That is a term that I don't use lightly. But to me, Kubo and the Two Strings is a perfect film. It is one of my favorite films of the year, and in terms of filmmaking and storytelling, I would say it's the best film I've seen in 2016 so far.

Director Travis Knight and his team really created something very special with this original story. I saw the movie about a week ago, and I just can't get it out of my head. I need to see it again! It's like a great song you hear for the first time that you just want to listen to over and over again. The only problem is the movie isn't even in theaters yet, so I haven't been able to do that!

I'm going to be dragging so many people out to see this film! I'd drag you all out to it if I could, but that would be impossible, so I hope you all take the time to see it on your own. It's a movie for everyone, it's a movie that everyone can enjoy, and it's a movie everyone has to see! So go see it, it's an amazing film that you're going to fall in love with!

STAR WARS: ROGUE ONE — 78 Trailer Screenshots, Easter Eggs, and Things Missed

Last night, a new full trailer was released for Rogue One: A Star Wars Story and it was incredibly awesome! I was completely overwhelmed with emotions when I was watching this trailer. It definitely choked me up a bit and gave me goosebumps. I just kept watching the trailer over and over again and the first thing I did when I woke up this morning was watch it again. Then of course, I had to watch it a few more times before I finally decided to buckle down and take some screenshots for this post.

Below, you'll find 78 screenshots from the trailer and I also include a great video breakdown of the trailer from Mr. Sunday Movies that points out 10 Easter eggs, references, and other things missed. One thing that no one missed, though, was the epic Darth Vader tease at the very end! Holy shit, I just exploded with excitement when that final shot in the trailer popped up. I can't wait to see him in action on the big screen again!

It looks like director Gareth Edwards did an amazing job bringing this story to life. I know a lot of people were freaking out when reports started surfacing that over half the film was going to be reshot, but this trailer should have put any of those fears to rest. Everything looks exactly as it should. Hell, I'm more excited about this film than I was about The Force Awakens!

All of the characters introduced in this trailer look great, but the one I'm most excited about is the blind rebel Chirrut Imwe, played by Donnie Yen. He clearly understands the Force and maybe even knows how to use it declaring "I fear nothing, all is as the Force wills it." He then proceeds to beat the hell out of a team of Stormtroopers with only his staff. I hope he has a decent-sized role in the movie.

Here's a synopsis that was recently released for the movie:

From Lucasfilm comes the first of the Star Wars standalone films, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, an all-new epic adventure. In a time of conflict, a group of unlikely heroes band together on a mission to steal the plans to the Death Star, the Empire’s ultimate weapon of destruction. This key event in the Star Wars timeline brings together ordinary people who choose to do extraordinary things, and in doing so, become part of something greater than themselves.

You can check out the video breakdown below in which the creator says, "This trailer brings us details on how the Death Star is powered, Planet Jedha, what kind of Darth Vader we’ll be getting, a handful of new characters and what the chances are of existing Star Wars characters returning such as Han Solo, Boba Fett, Obi Wan Kenobi, and more." Below that you'll find the trailer screenshots.

Rogue One also stars Felicity Jones, Diego Luna, Ben Mendelsohn, Mads Mikkelsen, Alan Tudyk, Riz Ahmed, with Jiang Wen and Forest Whitaker. The movie is set to be released on December 16th and that date can't get here soon enough. What were your favorite parts of the trailer?

Seth Rogen Horrifies Shoppers With Animatronic SAUSAGE PARTY Prank

Sausage Party is now in theaters, and whether or not you're going to see it, you've gotta see this! I think this animatronic food prank is better than any footage I've seen of the movie. Seth Rogen voices random foods in a supermarket and harasses people as they go about their shopping. The reactions are pretty amazing, minus the people who are too cool to talk to food.

Check it out below.

STRANGER THINGS is Reportedly More Popular Than DAREDEVIL and MAKING A MURDERER

$

In its first 16 days on Netflix, Stranger Things has surpassed the streaming numbers that Daredevil and Making A Murderer accrued over the same amount of time. The report comes from Digital Spy, who says 8.2 million people streamed the show in its first two weeks! That's pretty incredible, considering the lack of hype leading up to the show and the slow burn it had before it really started picking up steam!

The only Netflix shows that still rank above it for most views in two weeks are Fuller House (so bad) and the fourth season of Orange Is The New Black.

I'm still a couple episodes from finishing, but I'm already trying to get some shirts made that have "Hawkins, Indiana" on them! If you haven't watched this show yet, what are you doing with your life?

Rumor: Joss Whedon Will Direct The SUPERGIRL/FLASH Musical Crossover Episode

$
0
0

Take this with a massive grain of salt, but That Hashtag Show is claiming that Joss Whedon will direct the two-part musical crossover between The Flash and Supergirl on The CW in the spring of 2017. I'm not familiar with That Hashtag Show and don't know if they have an accurate and proven track record breaking stories like this, so I'm hesitant to believe it until we hear further confirmation from another source. But that being said, I think everyone can agree it would be really cool if this ended up being true.

Whedon obviously has experience directing musical-style episodes of television, famously helming the Buffy The Vampire Slayer episode "Once More, With Feeling," and also dabbling in musical superhero tones with Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog a few years ago. Combine that with his experience behind the camera on the first two Avengers movies, and it seems like a no-brainer that he'd be up for this. But on the other hand, his previous experience could also be the exact reason this rumor has any weight at all; if it turns out to be false, at least people could say it was plausible because of Whedon's history.

The webseries goes on to say that the villain of the episode is going to be the Music Meister, a character voiced by Whedon alum Neil Patrick Harris, and they speculate that NPH may end up playing the character in live action in the crossover as well. Again, that's plausible because of the history, but there's nothing concrete backing it up at this point. It would be cool to see, but we'll have to wait for further confirmation before we fully believe it. Still, we wanted to share this with you in case it ended up being true so you could get a jump start on revving up your excitement for spring of 2017.

Review: Tension Rises in Excellent HELL OR HIGH WATER

$
0
0

A rare bright light in a largely disappointing summer movie season, Hell or High Water is a sizzling modern noir western with a nifty script and a trio of superb performances.

Writer Taylor Sheridan fuels the screenplay with a sense of moral complexity similar to what he did with the cartel thriller Sicario, and director David Mackenzie (Starred Up) excels at balancing scenes of jaw-clenching tension and a laid back Southern vibe in the rest of the film. Set in a sleepy, debt-ridden Texas town where even lawyers aren't fans of the way banks have screwed people over, the film follows straight arrow Toby Howard (Chris Pine), who enlists his criminal brother Tanner (Ben Foster) to help him rob banks in order to pay off the reverse mortgage on their mother's ranch. They're smart about the robberies — only taking loose cash in the drawers, avoiding large bills, never going after the vaults, filtering the money through a casino — but Tanner, recently released from prison, is too much of a wild card.

Eventually he makes a mistake, which helps U.S. Marshal Marcus Hamilton (Jeff Bridges) and his partner Alberto (Gil Birmingham) track the brothers and figure out their next move, and the film builds to a showdown between the two forces. But while normally we'd be pulling for one or the other to succeed, Mackenzie does a great job of making us feel for both sides, which just adds to the sinking feeling in the pit of our stomachs when the two duos inevitably collide.

Bridges, who's just a shade more coherent here than his take on Rooster Cogburn from True Grit, is enjoyable as ever sauntering through this story. His lawman is on the brink of retirement, and since his character's wife has passed away, you get the sense that he's profoundly lonely and isn't looking forward to living out the rest of his days sitting on his front porch. He has a funny rapport with his partner, who's half Mexican, half Native American, and the two swap lighthearted racial barbs as they try to bring these criminals to justice. Like a bloodhound who's picked up a scent, his U.S. Marshal just won't let it go, and his dogged persistence hangs over the other characters like a shadow that will never dissipate.

Foster has played this kind of unhinged character many times before, but Bridges has played a similar character to the one he plays in this movie too, and they're both exceptionally good at leaning into those archetypes and giving them some slightly new shading. Foster's wheelhouse is playing men whose masculinity is challenged or threatened in some way (perceived or otherwise), and it's his character's aggressive, overeager approach that contributes to the brothers' plans going wrong.

But while it's great seeing Bridges and Foster stay in their lanes, so to speak, it's Pine who's the standout in this film. He's exceedingly different than his brash Captain Kirk in the Star Trek films, and the movie gives Pine some breathing room and enough time to really dig into this character and show off a different side of his capabilities. After watching him here, I get the sense he's been underutilized in Hollywood lately, and I hope he continues to stretch his legs as a performer.

Hell or High Water isn't quite the shoot-em-up heist thriller its trailers make it out to be. It's much more of a contemplative drama about economic desperation with some action scenes punctuated throughout. But however you end up classifying it, the film is one of the few truly great movies in an otherwise mediocre summer season.

Stephen Amell Says He's "Protecting" His ARROW Character This Season, Says He Didn't Last Season

Perhaps no one is more aware of the faults of Arrow than its leading man, Stephen Amell. Lately the actor appears more aware than ever that the show is losing more fans than it's gained in the last two seasons. On a recent Facebook post, Amell gave a surprisingly candid answer to a random question from a fan:

It would appear that Amell is taking responsibility for not speaking up more during the filming of last season about what he thinks the Green Arrow should do. Let's hope he has the power to make some real changes in this series because I'm already questioning whether or not I'll be tuning in for the season premiere. It's going to take a lot of persuading for me to give this year more than a few episodes.

Am I being too harsh? There has to be someone out there who appreciates the last season of Arrow, right?

EW has debuted the first photos from Passengers, the new science fiction love story from The Imitation Game director Morten Tyldum that stars two of the biggest movie stars in the world, Chris Pratt and Jennifer Lawrence.

Jon Spaihts (Prometheus, Doctor Strange) wrote the script and it made The Black List back in 2007, but it's taken almost a decade to finally get it made. The story is set on a spaceship that's traveling across the universe to colonize a new planet, but thirty years into their 120 year journey, a malfunction causes two people to wake up from hypersleep...and as you might have guessed, they fall in love. Joey saw some early footage from the film at CinemaCon, and it blew his mind.

EW spoke with Tyldum about the movie, and while you should head there to read the whole interview, I'll grab a couple of choice quotes below:

It’s a very intimate movie while taking place on this epic scale. For me, it’s a story about what’s important to live a full life. What are the things we need as humans? It’s not afraid to entertain but at the same time it asks big questions about what does it mean to really feel happy. Every generation has its love story. I feel like this is it. I had to do it.
You will laugh and cry and hold your breath and be at the edge of your seat. It has chills. It also will make you smile and laugh a lot. We wanted a playful movie. And if you have Chris and Jen it’s impossible not to have — they’ve come up with a lot of stuff on set. They’re both extremely funny. They’d try this and that and come up with really funny stuff. They can go very dramatic but their great chemistry – they’re just so good. It is just fun to be around them and fun to be on this journey. In this day of sequels and reboots I think it’s refreshing that it is a completely original story with two of the best movie stars in the world. I’m very, very happy with the movie.

Passengers hits theaters on December 21, 2016.

Director Zack Snyder has shared a new photo on Twitter from the set of Justice League of actor Jason Momoa in full Aquaman regalia rocking out as he plays the guitar. I wonder if he was playing a Phish song...get it? Phish? Because he's Aquaman? And he lives under the sea? With fish? Never mind.

Justice League hits theaters on November 17, 2017.
