See The Restoration of STAR TREK's Original Starship Enterprise in New Video

Not long ago, Mick shared a video showing off the restored version of Star Trek's original U.S.S. Enterprise that's currently on display at the Smithsonian in Washington, DC. Now William George has created a short film called Spacedock that gives us a detailed look into the restoration process. The artists who worked on this are clearly just as passionate about the intricacies of the ship as any diehard Trek fan, and it's cool to see all the work that went into bringing the ship back to its former glory.

This is a short film showing the process of the detail paint work on the conservation of the original U.S.S. Enterprise miniature, used in all 79 episodes of the original Star Trek television series. The detail paint work was done between the 11th and the 23rd of April 2016 at the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum’s Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center in Chantilly, Virginia. The model is now on display in the Boeing Milestones of Flight Hall at the National Air and Space Museum in Washington D.C.

These Fan-Made VHS Covers For Modern Movies Are Perfect in Every Way

We've covered something like this on the site before, but now an artist who goes by the Instagram handle iamsteelberg has created the best fake VHS covers for modern movies I've seen so far. Every one of these is absolutely perfect, from the way the design incorporates a screenshot or poster art into a natural-looking cover down to the scuffed and beat-up quality of the boxes. I can totally picture the sensation of what it would be like to be a kid walking through an old Blockbuster aisle, seeing these box covers, and having them capture my imagination. Great work!

The 1988 Horror Film PUMPKINHEAD Is Getting a Remake

Saw franchise producer Peter Block has picked up the rights to the 1988 horror film Pumpkinhead, and he plans on rebooting the horror franchise. According to EW, he’s currently on the hunt for a director to take on the project, which he is planning as a theatrical release.

The original film was directed by the great Stan Winston and starred Aliens actor Lance Henriksen, and I thought the original film was a great and fun horror flick. The story centers on a man who summons a terrifying demon called Pumpkinhead to destroy the teenagers who killed the man’s son in a tragic accident.

In regards to the film project, Block told the outlet:

“Pumpkinhead is one of my favorite horror films of the late ’80s, early ’90s. Stan Winston sits on that Mount Rushmore of iconic filmmakers because of his creature designs, and that was his first directing effort. The creature’s great but the emotional story is wonderful as well. I got the rights to Pumpkinhead, and hooked up with a great young writer called Nate Atkins, and we developed our script, which is really solid.”

Block went on to talk about his plans for the film, explaining that it will have a similar theme and story, but it won’t be a point-by-point remake:

“There is a similarity of theme and a similarity of story. There’s a lot of Easter eggs for people who know the original — iconic shots and iconic lines that we’re going to use. But we’ve enhanced the setting, and we’ve expanded the characters somewhat, to give it a different kind of experience.”

The producer said that he hopes to start shooting next year and talked about the kind of director they are currently looking to hire:

“[We need] somebody who really understands why the first one is terrific, the emotional beats of ‘Is the revenge you seek worse than whatever befell you in the first place?’ But it’s also somebody that wants to embrace what I think audiences really want these days — a really scary, fun thrill-ride. You get a lot of people who want to be in this genre because they see the commercial opportunities. I’m looking for a director who has a love for the genre and knows how to get those beats for the audience.”

One of the things that I love about the original film were the creepy effects. Back then they didn’t have CG effects to create monsters, it was all done practically, and Block is looking to honor that in the remake:

“I am a big proponent of practical effects. That was the great thing about the original. A lot of the films I still respond to most today, it’s because of the practical effects. We think that it’s going to be a nice slow reveal, lots of scares and lots of action in the beginning, and a great creature in the end, which everybody should be able to look at and say, ‘Oh, that’s Pumpkinhead!’ It’s not like you’re all of a sudden going to find that it’s some amorphous, nebulous, CGI wispy thing. You’re going to know it came from the Pumpkinhead family lineage.”

He seems to have a solid grasp on what he wants to do with this movie, and I hope it turns out to be a decent remake.

Watch: BATMAN V SUPERMAN and IRON MAN 2 Are The Same Movie

YouTube's CouchTomato is back with another "24 Reasons" video, and this time he points out the similarities between Zack Snyder's Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and Jon Favreau's Iron Man 2. The divide between diehard DC and Marvel fans seems to have grown to an enormous distance over the past few years, but as you'll see, when you break it down, they share a lot of the same storytelling DNA. It's all about how the ideas are executed.

Raunchy "Work Those Buns" SAUSAGE PARTY Clip and Two TV Spots

I've heard that Sausage Party is a ridiculously funny movie and that if you've liked what you've seen in the trailers, you're going to love the movie. While we wait for the movie to be released we have a raunchy NSFW clip from the film for you to watch called "Work Those Buns" that features the sausage flirting with the local buns, but the buns just throw back a bunch of insults. I've also included a couple of new TV spots for you to check out.

The R-rated animated comedy follows a sausage leading "a group of supermarket products on a quest to discover the truth about their existence and what really happens when they become chosen to leave the grocery store."

The movie features the voices of Seth Rogen, Kristen Wiig, Jonah Hill, Bill Hader, Michael Cera, James Franco, Danny McBride, Craig Robinson, Paul Rudd, Nick Kroll, David Krumholtz, Edward Norton, and Salma Hayek. It will be released in theaters on August 12th.

Watch: Kevin Smith Defends YOGA HOSERS to Disappointed Fan

I may not be a fan of Yoga Hosers, but Kevin Smith has gained a bit of my respect after I watched this video. There's something to be said about a man who can defend his work without having to belittle others or take away the validity of their argument. Smith does all of that and in the process gives some real insight into where he is in his career.

Yoga Hosers is a passion project that Smith made for himself, and really no one else. If other people who enjoy his work enjoy it, or others who feel nostalgic about the same films he loved that's great...but it's really about what he wants to do.

Let's be honest, Kevin Smith doesn't "owe" us anything, and some of us are past the point of even wanting what he has to offer. So why not let him do what he wants? I would probably do the same if I had his level of success.

Karl Urban's Reluctance to Do STAR TREK BEYOND Led to Bones' Larger Role in Film

One of the things that I loved about Star Trek Beyond more than the other films was the way it highlighted members of the crew beyond Kirk and Spock. Bones, in particular, got a lot more screen time than he had in the first couple films for sure! Turns out that was no coincidence.

In an interview with StarTrek.com, Karl Urban discussed his reluctance to return to the role of Bones for the third Star Trek film. In fact, he almost passed it up...

"I felt that I was in agreement with a vast number of fans and audience members and critics who, after watching Into Darkness, felt that the character had become marginalized. And I was not keen to repeat that experience...But I got on the phone with (director) Justin Lin, and I raised my concerns and issues with him. And he outlined the story and the vision that he had for the character. And I was immediately intrigued and also somewhat reassured that he was a long-term fan of Star Trek, that he understood the weight and value of the character, and how the character interacts with Spock and Kirk...I collaborated with Simon (Pegg) and Doug (Jung) and Justin to bring a well-defined version of the character to screen. And thankfully, they were very receptive to it. There's a lot of material in the film that's a direct result of e-mails and conversations and opinions that I held about what I wanted the character to do in this movie."

Those talks paid off as what happened on screen became a real character development of Bones we didn't witness in the first two films. We saw Spock and him develop a real rapport, and it introduced a strong sub-story that made you feel like these were two guys who had spent a couple years together and are airing out their grievances for the first time.

Urban has the option again to walk before Star Trek 4, and I really hope he stays! I'm just getting attached to Bones, you can't cut me off now!

Unsettling Full Trailer for Christopher Lloyd's I AM NOT A SERIAL KILLER

A full trailer has been released for the eerie new thriller I Am Not a Serial Killer which stars Christopher Lloyd (Back to the Future) and Max Records (Where the Wild Things Are). The movie was directed by Billy O’Brien (Isolation) and is based on the bestselling novel by Dan Wells. I'm not familiar with the book, but it looks like a very dark and twisted story that makes for a great film. I enjoy watching these kinds of movies because I'm fascinated by the dark side of storytelling. Here's the synopsis:

Sixteen-year-old John Wayne Cleaver (Records) is not a serial killer—but he has all the makings of one. Keeping his homicidal tendencies and morbid obsessions with death and murder in check is a constant struggle that only gets harder when a real serial killer begins terrorizing his sleepy Midwestern town. Now, in order to track down a psychopath and protect those around him, John must unleash his darkest inner demons.

IFC Midnight will release I Am Not a Serial Killer in select theaters and on VOD on August 26th. Does it look like a film that you'd be interested in checking out?

Patton Oswalt Compares Grief to Jason Statham in Emotional Facebook Post

I consider myself lucky in that I have yet to lose a parent or a significant other in my lifetime. I've heard others remark that it's a feeling you never really get over, but things do get better. Maybe that's something Patton Oswalt needs to hear after posting this note speaking about grief and the unexpected loss of his wife four months back. Using half humor and half hard reality, Oswalt gives us a vulnerable explanation of how he has been feeling these past few months via his Facebook page...

Oddly enough, he says grief is much like actor Jason Statham...

Thanks, grief.

Thanks for making depression look like the buzzing little bully it always was. Depression is the tallest kid in the 4th grade, dinging rubber bands off the back of your head and feeling safe on the playground, knowing that no teacher is coming to help you.

But grief? Grief is Jason Statham holding that 4th grade bully's head in a toilet and then fucking the teacher you've got a crush on in front of the class. Grief makes depression cower behind you and apologize for being such a dick.

If you spend 102 days completely focused on ONE thing you can achieve miracles. Make a film, write a novel, get MMA ripped, kick heroin, learn a language, travel around the world. Fall in love with someone. Get 'em to love you back.

But 102 days at the mercy of grief and loss feels like 102 years and you have shit to show for it. You will not be physically healthier. You will not feel "wiser." You will not have "closure." You will not have "perspective" or "resilience" or "a new sense of self." You WILL have solid knowledge of fear, exhaustion and a new appreciation for the randomness and horror of the universe. And you'll also realize that 102 days is nothing but a warm-up for things to come.

And...

You will have been shown new levels of humanity and grace and intelligence by your family and friends. They will show up for you, physically and emotionally, in ways which make you take careful note, and say to yourself, "Make sure to try to do that for someone else someday." Complete strangers will send you genuinely touching messages on Facebook and Twitter, or will somehow figure out your address to send you letters which you'll keep and re-read 'cause you can't believe how helpful they are. And, if you're a parent? You'll wish you were your kid's age, because the way they embrace despair and joy are at a purer level that you're going to have to reconnect with, to reach backwards through years of calcified cynicism and ironic detachment.

Lose your cool, and you're saved.

Michelle McNamara got yanked off the planet and out of life 102 days ago. She left behind an amazing unfinished book, about a horrific series of murders that everyone -- including the retired homicide detectives she worked with -- was sure she'd solve. The Golden State Killer. She gave him that name, in an article for Los Angeles Magazine. She was going to figure out the real name behind it.

She left Alice, her 7 year-old daughter. But not before putting the best parts of her into Alice, like beautiful music burned onto a CD and sent out into the void on a spaceship.

And she left me. 102 days into this.

I was face-down and frozen for weeks. It's 102 days later and I can confidently say I have reached a point where I'm crawling. Which, objectively, is an improvement. Maybe 102 days later I'll be walking.

Any spare energy I've managed to summon since April 21st I've put toward finishing Michelle's book. With a lot of help from some very amazing people. It will come out. I will let you know. It's all her. We're just taking what's there and letting it tell us how to shape it. It's amazing.

And I'm going to start telling jokes again soon. And writing. And acting in stuff and making things I like and working with friends on projects and do all the stuff I was always so privileged to get to do before the air caught fire around me and the sun died. It's all I knew how to do before I met Michelle. I don't know what else I'm supposed to do now without her.

And not because, "It's what Michelle would have wanted me to do." For me to even presume to know what Michelle would have wanted me to do is the height of arrogance on my part. That was one of the many reasons I so looked forward to growing old with her. Because she was always surprising me. Because I never knew what she'd think or what direction she'd go.

Okay, I'll start being funny again soon. What other choice do I have? Reality is in a death spiral and we seem to be living in a cackling, looming nightmare-swamp. We're all being dragged into a shadow-realm of doom by hateful lunatics who are determined to send our planet careening into oblivion.

Hey, there's that smile I was missing!

Take your time Patton, but do come back to us when you're ready!

New U-Wing Vehicle Revealed in STAR WARS: ROGUE ONE

During the most recent episode of The Star Wars Show, Lucasfilm revealed a new vehicle in the Star Wars universe that will be making its debut in Gareth EdwardsRogue One: A Star Wars Story. It’s called the U-Wing, a.k.a. the Incom UT-60D, which you can see in the image above, and thanks to Matt Martin from the Star Wars Story Group, we have a few details on it:

"The U-Wing is a new ship in the Star Wars universe. It's a troop transport and gunship. So it's there to bring in Rebel troops to heavy fire zones and get out as quickly as possible. The wings move depending on the situation, and it's there to both drop off troops and provide air support."

It will be cool to see these things in action. I love the vehicle designs that are used in the Star Wars universe, and this new vehicle fits in perfectly with the rest of the Star Wars vehicles that we’re already familiar with.

I believe we’ve seen an early concept version of this ship before in one of the very first pieces of concept art released for the film that features Rebel soldiers being dropped into battle. I included that piece for you below as a reminder.

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story hits theaters December 16th, 2016. You can watch the full episode of The Star Wars Show below.

If you are a Transformers movie fan who's been waiting to see Hot Rod make his debut in Michael Bay's Transformers universe, the wait is over. The official Twitter account for the film has confirmed that Hot Rod, a.k.a. Rodimus Prime, will appear in Transformers: The Last Knight. They even offer us some concept art of what the character will look like in the film, and you can check that out below.

There are no details on how the character will fit into the story. The image below just came with the caption, "Hot Rod: This is no cartoon. #transformers." It also offers some specs on the character, saying that he's Bumblebee's brother in arms and offers some personality traits such as being brash, slightly arrogant, and a protector.

Hot Rod quickly became one of my favorite characters when he was introduced in the original animated Transformers: The Movie. He was kind of an idiot at first, but he sure did look cool! I'm curious to see how they handle him in this upcoming film.

Transformers: The Last Knight will be released in theaters on June 23rd, 2017. For more news on the movie, click here

We all know that in a billion years the sun will turn into a red dwarf and Earth will be no more, but what if we're gone before that? I'm not just talking about us leaving the planet either, what if a mass extinction event hits us before that? It's already happened 5 times in Earth's history, who's to say it won't happen again?

PBS Space Time gives us the scenarios in which the Earth would meet its end and how we as humans need to prepare for it. Essentially we aren't in a good position to stop any scenario right now, but we could change that! Watch the video to learn more.

Amusing Trailer for Alan Tudyk’s CON MAN Season 2 and New Series Details

If you’re a fan of Alan Tudyk’s Con Man series then you’ll want to check out this new teaser trailer that premiered at Comic-Con. It features Tudyk’s character, Wray Nerely, dressed up as an astronaut walking down a hallway with a The Right Stuff kind of attitude. It also teases the character as a train wreck that will be fun to watch.

Con Man is a comedy series that amusingly follows Alan Tudyk and Nathan Fillion as parodies of themselves as they travel from one geek convention to another. It’s packed with funny stories and experiences that they’ve had as they live the life of a Con Man. The series is also packed full of awesome cameos.

The first season had some fun moments, and I’m looking forward to Season 2. While at Comic-Con, Tudyk explained that Season 2 is a musical version of John Steinbeck’s classic novel Of Mice and Men, and it’s titled “I’m With Stupid.” Tudyk explained at the Con Man panel that this idea was inspired by conversations he’s had with Lou Ferrigno.

He says that they eventually started talking about wanting to work together and one time he found himself in a conversation with Ferrigno talking about Of Mice and Men, and in regards to that, Tudyk explains, “That one little thing spawned all of that craziness.” Tudyk went on to reveal that Ferrigno will play the George character from Of Mice and Men and Tudyk is playing the Lenny type character. “There’s no one else who could have done it. Without Lou, it doesn’t happen.”

Sounds like this second season could be pretty damn funny! The show will obviously continue to make fun of the geek convention culture. The creator explains, “There are so many more things to write about. [You walk around a con and say] ‘This is the only place that would happen.’ Events you want to exploit for comedy because the stakes are so high and magic can happen.“

Con Man season two will premiere on Comic-Con HQ in November.

Our friends at Sneaky Zebra, best known for their awesome cosplay music videos, have released a humorously action-packed short film called Prop Wars: Prop Harder, which is a sequel to their 2013 short, Prop Wars. It features an epic battle in which the main players are fighting each other with iconic weapons from various films such as Tron: Legacy, Cowboys vs. Aliens, Star Wars, Men in Black, Evil Dead, Harry Potter, The Avengers, Guardians of the Galaxy, and more. As you watch, it's fun to see if you can recognize all of the props that were used in the short. The whole thing escalates into a fight between Iron Man and Green Lantern. It's really quite an enjoyable film so I hope you like it! I also included the first Prop Wars short in case you missed it.

Unworthy Thor Concept Art

Yesterday, Mark Ruffalo revealed that he was done shooting his scenes for Thor: Ragnarok. Since then, he’s released a few photos from the set and a couple of them feature Chris Hemsworth’s new look as the God of Thunder.

We got to see some concept art from Thor: Ragnarok at Comic-Con last month and it was the first glimpse we got of Thor sporting short hair and some war paint. Well, now you get to see Hemsworth’s new Thor look for real.

You don’t get to see his costume, but as you can see, this is the most drastic change we’ve seen for Thor yet in the MCU. He chopped his hair off! I like the new look, but my option doesn’t matter — I wonder what Jane Foster would think.

To catch up on all of our Thor: Ragnarok news, click here! The movie hits theaters on November 3, 2017.

STRANGER THINGS Showrunners Want An 8-Bit Video Game to Bridge The Gap To Season 2

I just finished watching the first season of The Duffer Brothers' terrific '80s-inspired Netflix series Stranger Things, and it's one of the few shows that truly lived up to the tremendous hype surrounding it. If you haven't watched it yet, check it out — if you like this site, I'm almost certain you'll dig the show.

While we wait for Netflix to officially renew the series for a second season, the showrunners — who have several seasons planned — spoke with IGN about how they're going to bridge the gap between seasons one and two:

Matt: Yeah, you have to do the Harry Potter thing. You have to jump a year. Because like Gaten [Matarazzo, who plays Dustin], his voice has already dropped quite a bit, to the point where we couldn’t even do ADR with him. We had to pitch it way up. It’s dropped. He’s grown. As much as I would love to have it be Christmas right after that, it’s just not feasible, so we’re going to skip a year. They’ll be a year older and all their changes they’re going through, we’ll take that into account and kind of work that into the show.
Ross: It’s also just exciting having these initial conversations about it because the jump allows us to say “what happened in that year?” It actually opens up a lot more storytelling possibilities. These characters have changed and the audience has to sort of fill in those gaps of what went on in that year. To us, it’s exciting. So the fact that we have to make this jump, because of the kids, we’re trying to use that to our advantage.
IGN: You could have a comic book of the year in between.
Ross Duffer: That’s a great idea! But what I really want is a video game.
Matt: Like an 8-bit… These fans, a lot of them have done this 8-bit video game art that’s blowing my mind.

An 8-bit game sounds like a really fun way to connect the dots. I just did a quick search for some Stranger Things 8-bit stuff, and found an 8-bit version of the theme song:

And there's also these really cool .gifs from Matheus Bitencourt:

Whatever happens, I just can't wait to see more Stranger Things-related content. Read our review of the first season here.

Watch a Homemade Flamethrower Take on a Homemade Freeze Ray in Crazy Video

Out of all the internet scientists on YouTube, The Backyard Scientist is about the craziest. Every time I watch one of his videos, I find myself constantly asking, "should he be doing that?" For example, should he be spraying that girl with liquid nitrogen? Isn't that something that can cause some skin damage?! Usually he does some cool stuff though, so that makes up for it.

In this video, he creates a portable "freeze ray" using a lot of liquid nitrogen and a thermos and puts it up against his homemade flamethrower. Who will emerge victorious? FIND OUT NEXT TIME ON...nah, just kidding, watch the video to find out. Oh...and skip to about 2:50 if you want to miss the awkward flirting that happens before that.

Joel Edgerton in Talks to Star Opposite Jennifer Lawrence in Spy Thriller RED SPARROW

$

Nearly a year ago, I wrote about how Jennifer Lawrence might reteam with her Hunger Games director Francis Lawrence for a sexy spy thriller called Red Sparrow. At the time, I mentioned that it would be a while until things were finalized, and now it looks like casting is finally falling into place. Deadline reports that Joel Edgerton is in early talks to star opposite Lawrence in the movie, which is based on the novel by author Jason Matthews:

In present-day Russia, ruled by blue-eyed, unblinking President Vladimir Putin, Russian intelligence officer Dominika Egorova struggles to survive in the post-Soviet intelligence jungle. Ordered against her will to become a “Sparrow,” a trained seductress, Dominika is assigned to operate against Nathaniel Nash, a young CIA officer who handles the Agency’s most important Russian mole.
Spies have long relied on the “honey trap,” whereby vulnerable men and women are intimately compromised. Dominika learns these techniques of “sexpionage” in Russia’s secret “Sparrow School,” hidden outside of Moscow. As the action careens between Russia, Finland, Greece, Italy, and the United States, Dominika and Nate soon collide in a duel of wills, tradecraft, and—inevitably—forbidden passion that threatens not just their lives but those of others as well. As secret allegiances are made and broken, Dominika and Nate’s game reaches a deadly crossroads. Soon one of them begins a dangerous double existence in a life-and-death operation that consumes intelligence agencies from Moscow to Washington, DC.

It's a little weird that Edgerton is 42 and Lawrence is about to turn 26, but I guess a spy's gotta do what a spy's gotta do?
