Video: BLACK PANTHER — Full Comic-Con Panel

$

0

The script for Black Panther hasn't been finalized by writer/director Ryan Coogler (Creed, Fruitvale Station), but Marvel Studios brought him and stars Chadwick Boseman, Michael B. Jordan, Lupita Nyong'o, and Danai Gurira on Comic-Con's Hall H stage to talk about what brought them into the project. After seeing Boseman as Black Panther in Captain America: Civil War, there is little doubt that he's one badass character. Coogler's last film Creed was a solid boxing film that echoed the Rocky story without being a complete repeat or reboot. Black Panther opens July 6, 2018, and Marvel is pretty confident about the film to be promoting it this early.

THE FLASH: The DC Extended Universe Has Found Its Iris West

A couple of weeks ago, word came out that The Flash director Rick Famuyima had narrowed down his casting choices for leading lady and love interest Iris West to three options. Dope actress Kiersey Clemons was at the top of his list, and now it's official: Variety reports that Clemons will play "the tough-as-nails journalist" and friend/eventual love interest of Ezra Miller's Barry Allen.

Clemons appeared recently in Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising, and she's snagged one of the lead roles in the Flatliners remake for MGM. I haven't personally seen her in anything other than Dope, and since I don't know what writer Seth Grahame-Smith's take on Iris is going to be in this movie, it's tough for me to say if she's the best candidate for the role, so we'll just have to wait and see how it goes. (It's based on a treatment by Phil Lord and Chris Miller, though, so that's promising.)

Ezra Miller, of course, made a big splash in the Justice League footage that came out at Comic-Con this past weekend. Watch that here if you haven't seen it yet. The Flash speeds into theaters on March 16, 2018.

Director Ryan Coogler Explains How Marvel's BLACK PANTHER Comic is Influencing His Movie

$

I'm excited about Marvel Studios' Black Panther for a myriad of reasons, but if I had to choose a single one that exemplifies my excitement, it's the staggering amount of pure talent the company has recruited to be a part of this movie. Creed and Fruitvale Station Ryan Coogler is co-writing and directing, Chadwick Boseman is reprising his role as the title hero, and there's an amazing supporting cast that includes people like Michael B. Jordan, Lupita Nyong'o, and The Walking Dead's Danai Gurira. Pretty freaking awesome. After the events of Civil War, I'm really looking forward to seeing how Panther operates on his home turf.

Coogler is the man in charge on this film, and since fans always like to hear about how filmmakers respect the source material, I figured I'd share some quotes from a new interview he did with Vulture in which he talks about how Ta-Nehisi Coates' great new Black Panther comic is influencing his movie:

"...what he’s doing with Panther is just incredible. You can really see his background as a poet in some of the dialogue. And what Brian Stelfreeze is doing with the visuals in that book. And some of the questions that it’s asking. It’s just inspiring for [co-screenwriter] Joe Robert Cole and myself."
“So, it’s influenced the way you think about the character?” I asked.
“Absolutely, absolutely,” he replied. “What’s so great about Panther is he’s a superhero who, if you grab him and ask him if he’s a superhero, he’ll tell you, ‘No.’ He sees himself as a politician, as a leader in his country. It just so happens that the country is a warrior-based nation where the leaders have to be warriors, as well, so sometimes he has to go fight. I think starting at that is really so interesting. If you look at that, anything that’s happening in the world right now, or in the world in the past, in the political realm and how people deal with each other, it can be an inspiration.”

It sounds like this movie is going to be the most political Marvel Studios film by far, and that's saying something considering a lot of the movies have been about the relationship between a hero (or heroes) and government organizations, and that a few of the characters have actually testified in Senate hearings on screen already. But Wakandan politics are a whole different story, and I can't wait to see how Coogler dives into that world behind the camera.

Watch: Matt Damon Recaps The BOURNE Trilogy in 90 Seconds

I'm going to see a screening of Jason Bourne later tonight, and because of the insanity of Comic-Con over the past few days, I haven't had a chance to rewatch Matt Damon's original Bourne trilogy. It's been a few years since I've seen those films, so I was sort of bummed that I wouldn't be able to go into the new movie with a fresh reminder of exactly what went down in Identity, Supremacy, and Ultimatum.

But here comes Damon, metaphorically crashing through my computer screen to deliver exactly what I'm asking for! He narrates this video, which succinctly recaps the entire trilogy in 90 seconds...which, come to think of it, almost sounds like the kind of task that Bourne (or David Webb) himself would have to do, complete with the ticking clock angle.

If you want to see a slightly less succinct version, check out Burger Fiction's recap below:

While still filming, director Jon Watts and star Tom Holland of Spider-Man: Homecoming made a brief appearance during the Marvel panel. Unfortunately the footage they screened hasn't made its way online yet, but we break down what you missed here. The cast is incredibly young and look like real kids in high school. While high school was small part of previous Spider-Man films it seems to be the central location in Homecoming. Many have said that it has a John Hughes quality to it.

Spider-Man: Homecoming swings into theaters July 17th, 2017 (USA).

Comic-Con Trailer for the PRISON BREAK Revival Series

Fox has released the new trailer for their upcoming Prison Break revival series that they premiered during the show’s panel at Comic-Con over the weekend. I was really excited to hear that Prison Break was coming back. I’m a fan of the show, and it looks like the upcoming event series is going to be pretty damn good. It’s exciting to see all of these characters coming together again for one more prison break! Here’s the synopsis:

In the thrilling new event series PRISON BREAK, original series stars Wentworth Miller, Dominic Purcell, Sarah Wayne Callies, Amaury Nolasco, Robert Knepper, Rockmond Dunbar and Paul Adelstein are reunited for an all-new adventure spanning the globe and featuring the signature thrills and cliffhangers that were hallmarks of the original series when it aired on FOX from 2005-2009.
The original action drama centered on MICHAEL SCOFIELD (Miller, “The Loft”), a young man determined to save his convicted brother, LINCOLN BURROWS (Purcell, “DC’s Legends of Tomorrow”), from death row by hatching an elaborate plan to escape from prison. In the all-new event series, filmed on location in Morocco, clues surface that suggest a previously thought-to-be-dead Michael may be alive. Lincoln and SARA (Sarah Wayne Callies, “Colony,” “The Walking Dead”), Michael’s wife until he was assumed dead, reunite to engineer the series’ biggest escape ever, as three of Fox River State Penitentiary’s most notorious escapees, SUCRE (Nolasco, “Telenovela”), T-BAG (Knepper, “Heroes”) and C-NOTE (Dunbar, “The Mentalist”), are pulled back into the action. “Prison Break” was an immediate critical and ratings hit when it premiered on FOX in the fall of 2005, garnering Golden Globe Award nominations for Best Television Series – Drama and Best Performance by an Actor in a Television Series – Drama (Miller).

The series is set to premiere this fall.

James Wan Says He’s Bringing His “Horror Element” to AQUAMAN

Director James Wan briefly took the stage in Hall H at Comic-Con to talk about his upcoming feature film adaptation of Aquaman. The filmmaker is best known for his horror film work on properties like Saw, The Conjuring, and Insidious. It looks like he’s going to bring his talents of creating horror to Aquaman as well.

While talking to 7,000 fans at the con, Wan excitedly talked about the film and what he plans on bringing to it, saying:

"Fucking Aquaman! What can I say? Aquaman’s such an amazing character. I love the fact that he’s never really been portrayed in the feature movie world before... and the opportunity to explore this universe, you know, bring a bit of my horror element into this. The deep sea is a scary world. And then also explore the wondrous world of atlantis. That’s all I have to say."

And that’s all he really did say. He didn’t really offer any other details. But the thought of seeing Wan’s vision of the dark and horrific deep sea world is exciting! It’s cool that he’ll be drawing from his strengths bring this story to life. This is completely different territory for Wan to explore, and I really hope that he is able to give us something overwhelmingly cool and completely unique.

The movie is set to be released on July 17th, 2018.

Several Seasons Are Being Planned for Netflix’s STRANGER THINGS!

If you haven’t watched Stranger Things on Netflix yet, you really need to get on that, now! This series is something special, and it perfectly captures the greatness of '80s style films. Stranger Things is the best thing I’ve seen this year, and I can’t wait for more! I was hoping for a second season, but it sounds like we are going to get more than that!

During an interview with /Film, the Duffer Brothers, who created the series, and producer Shawn Levy revealed that they plan on making several seasons! The series has yet to be officially renewed by Netflix, but after all the hype it’s been getting, it’s a sure bet that it’s going to happen. Here’s what Levy had to say:

“We definitely are hopeful to go several more seasons. And the plan is to continue with this set of characters while introducing a few critical key new ones next season. So I’ll just say that a lot of the big mysteries get answered at the end of Season 1, but we are very much kind of unearthing new problems and questions that merit future stories and future investigation in the most enjoyable way.”

There are obviously no details one what they have in store, but judging from the first season and how it ended things are sure to take an interesting and possibly unexpected turn. I loved the cast of the first series so much. Those kids all gave incredible performances, and I’m completely invested in their characters. I’m so happy to hear that the plan is to bring them all back.

I can’t wait to see where the next season takes the story and where it leads these characters! You can read our review of the series here in case you missed it.

The Identities of Peter Parker’s High School Classmates in SPIDER-MAN: HOMECOMING Revealed

We got to see our first official footage from Marvel’s Spider-Man: Homecoming at Comic-Con last weekend, and it completely blew me away. The movie looks absolutely incredible and it has that lovable charm that makes the John Hughes movies from the '80s so damn good. If you haven’t read the footage description from the panel yet, you can check it out here.

There wasn’t a lot revealed at the panel regarding the film that we didn’t already know, but afterwards, EW got to interview director Jon Watts and the cast of the film, and the director revealed the names of Peter Parker’s high school classmates in the story.

As Watts pointed at each actor around Tom Holland, he offered the name of each their characters. Zendaya is playing Michelle, Tony Revolori is playing Flash, Jacob Batalon is playing Ned, and Laura Harrier is playing Liz. Harrier went on to say that they “constantly refer to ourselves as The Breakfast Club.”

They didn’t really offer any other details on the characters they play, but they are all high school kids navigating through the horror of high school life and trying to get through it alive. We do know that Flash is a bully and in regards to that, Revolori says, “I’m [Peter Parker’s] bully and I don’t know how cool he is, but when we call cut, I’m just like, ‘Ah! You’re so cool.’”

The footage screened at the panel confirmed that The Vulture will be in the movie, but we don’t 100% know who is playing that character. There are reports that Michael Keaton will be the villain but that has yet to be seen. When talking about Vulture, Watts says:

“Vulture’s the first real villain in the Spider-Man comics. He’s in the second issue. He’s one of the classics from the best rogues’ gallery out there, and we’ve never seen him, he’s never been brought to life.”

Until now, and he looks pretty damn badass! Spider-Man: Homecoming is set to be released on July 7th, 2017, and I can’t wait to see more from the film! Check out the video interview below:

Hilarious SON OF ZORN Comic-Con Trailer and Panel Highlight Videos

Phil Lord and Chris Miller’s new comedy series Son of Zorn looks absolutely hilarious. This is one of my most anticipated series of the year because it is so different and unique from any other comedy series that is currently in production.

During Comic-Con this past weekend Fox premiered a new trailer for the series, which brought a huge smile on my face. That trailer has been released online alone with a couple videos featuring some of the highlights from the panel. You’ve gotta check this stuff out because it’s just great crazy comedy!

Son of Zorn features the voice of Jason Sudeikis, and the series is a hybrid live-action/animated comedy about “an animated warrior from a faraway island in the Pacific Ocean – where everything and everyone is animated – who returns to Orange County, CA, to win back his live-action ex-wife and teenage son. ZORN (Sudeikis), the Defender of Zephyria, Conqueror of the tribes of Agon, decapitator of the dark herdsmen of Grith, has fought in countless epic battles throughout his life, but may find the greatest challenge of all when travels back to suburbia to reconnect with his family”.

Once there, Zorn finds himself estranged from his son, ALANGULON or just “Alan” (Johnny Pemberton, “21 Jump Street”), a 17-year-old with a mellow, P.C. attitude; and Alan’s mother, Zorn’s ex-wife, EDIE (Cheryl Hines, “Curb Your Enthusiasm”), a former wild child now living the life of an upper middle class mom. Zorn’s efforts to win them back are complicated by the fact that Edie is now engaged to CRAIG (Tim Meadows, “Saturday Night Live”), an online psychology professor and a stable presence in their lives. Nevertheless, to be a good dad, Zorn commits to remaining in Orange County for the long haul, renting an apartment and even working in the exciting field of industrial soap sales under his boss, LINDA (Artemis Pebdani, “Scandal,” “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia”), who likes his passion, but just wants him to rein it in at the office. As he adjusts to life in the suburbs, Zorn is the classic fish out of water, navigating his way through fatherhood, divorce and a boring office job. Sure, as an overlord of pain, he defeated glombeasts, wolf-bats and bloodthirsty arachnobots, but now he’ll go toe-to-toe with a new set of enemies: meter maids, dress codes and the DMV.

This series has the potential to be one of the greatest things ever and I can’t wait to see it!

DOCTOR STRANGE Will Take Marvel into “Full Weird” Territory

The footage that Marvel showed off at Comic-Con for Doctor Strange was freakin’ badass! If you saw the trailer, then you got a pretty good taste of the crazy psychedelic awesomeness that is in store for us. There’s no doubt in my mind that this is going to be the most different and unique Marvel movie yet. It introduces Marvel fans to a whole different cosmic side to the universe, and it will take us to new dimensions.

Director Scott Derrickson recently talked to ComicBook.com about the film and said it will take Marvel to the weirdest place yet.

"I think that the short answer is this is the movie where Marvel goes full weird. That full weirdness is written in the Ditko images, the Jack Kirby images, the early Doctor Strange comic book panels that are still to this day so mind blowing."

He went on to talk about the inspiration of the comics and what they bring to the film, saying:

"What the comics did was, they brought with Doctor Strange an extra dimension into psychadelia, mysticism, and spirituality and all these very 60's things and broke open the Marvel comic book universe into the Marvel multiverse. I think Doctor Strange is going to be the beginning of the Marvel Cinematic Multiverse. It's really serving the same function that the comic did. Even though it was a weird aberration as a comic book, I think it was a real linchpin in the comics. It ended up being decades of new stories and I think this movie will do the same thing."

Doctor Strange is one of coolest and most powerful characters in the Marvel universe, and it’s so cool to see him enter the MCU. I love what I’ve seen in the trailers for the film, especially that last one, and I honestly think that this movie is going to be even better than what we expect it to be.

The film stars Benedict Cumberbatch as Dr. Stephen Strange, Tilda Swinton as The Ancient One, Chiwetel Ejiofor as Baron Mordo, Rachel McAdams as Christine Palmer, Benedict Wong as Wong, and Mads Mikkelsen will be playing the villain Kaecilius.

Marvel's Doctor Strange will cast a spell on audiences November 4th, 2016.

Disney has released some new promo images from their upcoming animated adventure film Moana. They give us our first look at several of the characters that will be in the movie, and the studio also revealed the main cast of actors who will be voicing these characters. Some of these actors include Jemaine Clement, Rachel House, and Alan Tudyk.

Moana looks like a wonderful film, the story of which follows the journey of a 16-year-old girl (Auli‘i Cravalho) who dreams of becoming a master wayfinder. She teams up with the mighty demigod Maui (Dwayne Johnson) to fulfill an ancient quest.

When talking about the cast of the film, co-director John Musker said:

“Our assembled voice cast for this film is beyond our wildest dreams. We are so fortunate to have this group of talented actors, many from Oceania, breathing life into their characters.”

Clements added;

“We are so thankful to have found such extraordinary people who not only capture the voices of these characters, they elevate them in every way.”

Now I present to you the newly revealed characters who will be in Moana:

JEMAINE CLEMENT (“The BFG,” “Despicable Me,” “Rio,” “Rio 2,” “What We Do in the Shadows,” Flight of the Conchords) provides the voice of TAMATOA, a self-absorbed, 50-foot crab who lives in Lalotai, the realm of monsters. The conceited crustacean wants to be more than a “bottom feeder” and overcompensates for this perceived shortcoming by covering himself in all things shiny.

RACHEL HOUSE (“Whale Rider,” “Hunt for the Wilderpeople”) lends her voice to GRAMMA TALA, Moana’s confidante and best friend, who shares her granddaughter’s special connection to the ocean. Although her son Tui, the chief of Motunui, is a no-nonsense leader, Gramma Tala most definitely dances to the beat of her own drum.
characters-and-cast-revealed-in-pomo-images-for-disneys-moana4
TEMUERA MORRISON (“Star Wars: Episode II – Attack of the Clones,” “Once Were Warriors,” “Six Days, Seven Nights”) voices Moana’s father, CHIEF TUI, the gregarious and well-respected leader of the people of Motunui Island. Chief Tui wants Moana to follow in his footsteps as leader of their people, but fears his daughter’s draw to the ocean and the world that lies beyond their reef.
NICOLE SCHERZINGER (Grammy®-nominated singer, West End's "Cats") voices Moana’s mother, SINA, who always has her daughter’s back. Playful, sharp and strong-willed, Sina appreciates Moana’s longing to be on the water, but also wants to protect her daughter from the fabled dangers beyond the reef.

ALAN TUDYK, Walt Disney Animation Studios’ lucky charm (“Zootopia,” “Wreck-It Ralph,” “Big Hero 6”), is behind the voice of HEIHEI. Heihei is one dumb rooster—the village idiot, in fact. When the clueless chicken accidently stows away on Moana’s canoe, he lands a front-row seat for her epic journey.

The roster of characters also includes the KAKAMORA, an intense team of crazy, coconut-armored pirates who will stop at nothing to get what they want, and PUA, Moana’s loyal pet pig with puppy energy and an innocent puppy brain.

Moana is set to be released in theaters on November 23rd, 2016.

Concept Trailer for a Gene Roddenberry Biopic about the Origins of STAR TREK

concept-trailer-for-a-gene-roddenberry-biopic-about-the-origins-of-star-trek2

There’s an interesting looking Gene Roddenberry biopic in development called The Pilot, which chronicles the story of how Star Trek came to be.

The film is being developed by James Darling, who cut together a proof-of-concept trailer for the independent film using footage from other films, concept art, location photos, storyboards, and some archival footage.

There’s a lot of crap that Roddenberry had to go through to actually get Star Trek made. There’s a pretty incredible history with this series, and it would make a great story for a film. It’s awesome to see someone actually attempting to make it happen.

I came across the news at AICN, and they say the script is outstanding. The filmmakers are still in the process of getting financing, and they are currently making their final big push. The concept trailer basically lays out the size and scope of the film and the story they are setting out to tell. Check it out!

Review: JASON BOURNE is Back in Action-Packed Sequel

$
0
0

Over the course of three movies from 2002-2007, Matt Damon explored the essential question of the Bourne franchise: who is Jason Bourne? Ultimatum gave him (and us) the answer: Jason Bourne is David Webb, a former soldier who volunteered to be a part of Treadstone, a secret organization that essentially turned him into a killing machine. With his identity issues finally solved, the story came to an end...or so we thought.

Damon has reunited with director Paul Greengrass to continue the saga with Jason Bourne, which picks up years later and finds Webb — who I'll call "Bourne" from here on out to make things easy — engaging in underground street fights around the world in order to punch his pain away. He's still haunted by what he's done (his greatest hits are helpfully provided in flashbacks for those who haven't rewatched the trilogy in a while), and when his old Treadstone pal Nicky Parsons (Julia Stiles) shows up with new information about his father's involvement with the organization, Bourne adopts a new mission: he knows who he is, but now he has to find out the truth about why he volunteered in the first place.

That's easier said than done, of course, because Nicky got her information by hacking into the CIA and the new director (Tommy Lee Jones) and his hotshot young protege (Alicia Vikander) are hot on her trail, sending a new asset (Vincent Cassel) to silence Bourne once and for all. Meanwhile, there's a subplot about the director blackmailing a Zuckerberg-esque tech genius (Riz Ahmed) into giving him a backdoor into his massive social media empire, so the CIA can spy on everyone — ostensibly to protect us from national security threats. Edward Snowden is name-checked once or twice, and the film pays lip service to the now-familiar debate about information, security, and privacy, but without meaningfully adding anything new to the conversation. It's an interesting microcosm of the film itself, which also goes through the motions of something familiar without really bringing anything new to the table.

Does the CIA's mainframe get hacked? Hell yeah! Does Vikander pull up a freeze frame of a blurry video on a screen and say "enhance," resulting in 100% clarity of the image? You bet your ass she does. This film is stuffed with those kinds of cliches, but I'm wondering how many of those cliches began with (or at least proliferated because of) this franchise in the first place. Could one of the original trilogy's biggest impacts on the genre have been normalizing these silly aspects to the point where Jason Bourne is simply a continuation of that level of techno-goofiness, and not just a game of connect-the-dots through all of the genre's worst tendencies? I don't know if I can give the trilogy that much credit, but it's very possible.

But those who loved the first three will find a lot to love about this one, too, because it basically picks and chooses scenes from the trilogy and repurposes them here. In other words: Bourne's gonna Bourne. There are a bunch of brutal hand-to-hand combat fight scenes, assassination attempts, and car chases and foot chases through crowded city streets, all captured with Greengrass's patented shaky cam. It's not as nauseating as it was in Supremacy, but it's still very much his style of choice here. The action escalates to near Fast & Furious levels of absurdity by the time it climaxes in Las Vegas, teetering on the edge of believability in this supposedly grounded cinematic world, but longtime fans of the franchise likely won't mind too much.

Damon is obviously older than the last time we saw him play this part nearly a decade ago, and he struck me as particularly weary here. I'm not sure how much of it is him trying to instill a sense of fatigue in the character and how much of it is him actually being a little tired of playing this role again, but he's talented enough that I'll give him the benefit of the doubt. Tommy Lee Jones seems to sleepwalk his way through the first half of this movie, delivering truly bizarre line readings with a sense of inexplicable aloofness. Thankfully, he settles in as the film progresses and does an adequate job of being a sketchy CIA leader. Vikander, whose character seems slightly too young for her position in the agency, doesn't leave much of an impact as an operative intent on bringing Bourne in instead of killing him on sight; she was terrific in Ex Machina last year, but her performance here is unfortunately generic. Cassel, on the other hand, is perfectly cast as the newest asset, and this marks a reunion for him and Damon after Cassel memorably played "The Night Fox" in Ocean's Twelve.

It's tough to rate Jason Bourne on a 1-10 scale. As an action movie, I'd probably give it a 5: it's a serviceable thriller with a couple of decent moments, but it doesn't push the genre forward in any way or even create any iconic set pieces (there's nothing as memorable as Bourne attacking someone with a pen or a rolled up magazine). But as a Bourne movie, it pretty much does what it's supposed to do, and feels very much like a follow-up to Damon's well-liked trilogy. So instead of rating it as a standalone movie, I'll rate this one purely as a Bourne sequel (it tells one long story anyway), and I'll give it:
