Spider-Man Attacks Giant-Man in Concept Art for CIVIL WAR

Marvel movie concept artist Andy Park has released yet another awesome piece of key art that he created for Captain America: Civil War. It features Spider-Man on the attack against Giant-Man  during the epic Battle of Leipzig airport scene from the film.

Watching Spider-Man fight Giant-Man was one of the most entertaining parts of that scene, especially since his whole plan to take him down came from The Empire Strikes Back. The art came with the following caption:

"I painted #CaptainAmericaCivilWar keyframes thinking "Holy Cow we're gonna see this on film?!" #GiantMan #Spiderman"

We did, and it was glorious!

The Reveal Shot of Darth Vader in ROGUE ONE Was Found on Accident

Darth Vader is going to be making an epic comeback to the big screen in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. It's going to be so cool to see him back up on the big screen and fighting against the Rebels. Apparently, Vader made his big reveal in an exclusive trailer for the film that screened at Star Wars Celebration this past weekend.

The character's reveal came in the reflection of a red glowing console. This is the first shot of Vader that fans will see in the movie, and according to director Gareth Edwards, the way the villain was revealed came on accident. While talking to ComicBook.com at the event, Edwards said that they had built 360-degree sets so that he could shoot at any angle and that's how the reveal shot of Vader was discovered. He says:

“That was born out of all the experimenting we were talking about. You don’t go, ‘I want this, this is the shot I want.’ They built the whole set, they had a reflection, Vader went in there and we’re looking at the reflection going, ‘That’s fucking cool!’ So as we’re filming, we’re like, go down, go down, and just playing around, and things happen that you wouldn’t have asked for. That was a great example of it. I would’ve never picked that shot, but then it’s in front of you and you get excited about something, and he’s such an iconic – he’s the most iconic character in all of cinema, potentially. To hear everyone cheer when they saw his silhouette, you feel like, ‘that is worth everything.’”

I really hope that they show this trailer at the Comic-Con panel for Rogue One! I'm bummed that they didn't release it online this weekend, but it gives us something to look forward to. Edwards went to explain that it was a process of him to figure out the right way to use Vader in the film as he has such a gravitational pull. So, instead of focusing on that he just focused on the story and characters and just dropped Vader in the places where he was needed. He then talked about his goal for the film:

"Hopefully, the goal, is that you come to the film for all the reasons we love Star Wars, and you get sucked in, and care about the new people, and then as you’re in the midst of all that, familiar things start to pass by."

I think that's what all the fans are hoping for as well. When previously talking about the character, Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy said that Vader "will be in the movie sparingly. But at a key, strategic moment, he’s going to loom large.” Edwards added:

“Within the Rebellion, it’s not commonly spoken about. Within the Empire, there is the culture of knowing of the existence of Darth Vader. There’s definitely an underlying feeling that there is a power – a dark power – available to the Empire and that if you overstep your mark, you will suffer the consequences.”

Darth Vader will once again be voiced by James Earl Jones, which is fantastic. The movie is set to be released on December 16th, 2016.

Stunning Early Concept Art for George Lucas’ WILLOW Shows a Very Different Vision

Ron Howard and George LucasWillow was one of my favorite fantasy films when I was growing up. That was just such a special film with a certain magic and charm to it that I’ve never seen in a movie since.

I recently came across some early concept art that was done for the film that I had never seen before, and this stuff is absolutely beautiful! Lucas commissioned French illustrator Jean “Moebius” Giraud to create the art, and I had to share this stuff with you!

It gives Willow a completely different look and feel as the illustrations we see here were heavily inspired by Japanese-style art. A friend pointed the art out to me in a post from a website called Tell Forward, and the author explains:

Moebius shows himself to be a master of understanding George Lucas’ influences for this film, which included Akira Kurosawa’s Noh influenced samurai films. His use of a Noh theater mask for the character of Sorsha is one of my favorite decisions. Another example of Moebius’ playfulness as a creative thinker is his making the Kael character a purple beast with a tattoo of a green dragon on his forehead. Essentially, a monster who has a tattoo of a monster on him!

It’s hard not to think about what Willow would have been like had this art been used as its inspiration. After seeing this art, I’d actually love to see a new version of Willow made that is true to this style.

Amanda Waller Assembles Task Force X in New Kickass Trailer for SUICIDE SQUAD

“I am your consequence.”

Warner Bros. has released another new trailer for David Ayer’s Suicide Squad, and supposedly it's the final one. It’s loaded with new footage as it gives us our best look yet at Viola Davis as Amanda Waller as she assembles Task Force X for a mission to take down The Enchantress. This trailer is just as fun as all the other trailers that have been released, and Waller comes across as a person who is not to be messed with.

The movie stars Will Smith as Deadshot, Joel Kinnaman as Rick Flag, Jared Leto as the Joker, Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn, Ben Affleck as Batman, Jai Courtney as Captain Boomerang, Cara Delevingne as Enchantress, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje as Killer Croc, Jay Hernandez as El Diablo, Adam Beach as Slipknot, and Karen Fukuhara as Katana.

Suicide Squad opens August 5th, 2016! For more information on the film and what we can expect from it, click here

The 1980s Sci-Fi Series CAPTAIN POWER Is Getting a Reboot and There's a Teaser Trailer

Captain Power And The Soldiers Of The Future is one of those properties from the 1980s that I had a blast with. It was a cool sci-fi TV series that you could interact with the tie-in action figure toy line. It was actually on a list I put together of 1980s toys that you might not remember. The original series took place in the year 2147 and was set in the aftermath of the Metal Wars, which was an World War that involved an epic battle between humans and machines.

The original co-creator of the series, Gary Goddard, is rebooting the franchise in a new series called Phoenix Rising. and thanks to Deadline, we have information on the story and a teaser trailer for you to watch:

Phoenix Rising picks up 15 years after humanity has lost a devastating war against an artificial intelligence called Overmind. Jonathan Power, the son of the man who caused that war, learns the truth about his father and discovers a new type of battle armor that will enable a small, mismatched team of soldiers and civilians to fight the Bionic armies of the New Order. Dunigan will return in a new role.

The series is bring produced by Planet X Production, and Goddard will be bringing Phoenix Rising to Comic-Con this week as a way to start promoting it. The first episode was written by Judith and Garfield Reeves-Stevens, who previously worked on Star Trek: Enterprise. When talking about the series Goddard said:

“As fans of both science fiction and the Captain Power series, we’re excited to help re-imagine this iconic TV show for today’s viewers. Although the surprisingly dark themes, serialized storytelling and shocking character deaths featured within the series were well ahead of their time in 1987, they’re exactly the kind of story elements a modern viewing audience craves.”

You can watch the teaser trailer for the new series below. It just doesn’t look like the style and effects have been upgraded since the '80s. Regardless of that, I hope the new series provides some entertainment. It’s a shame that there won’t be a action figure line attached to it like back in the day. That's kind of what set it apart from everything else.

Bizarre and Trippy Trailer for FUTURAMA Fan Film FANORAMA

It's been awhile since I've felt this many conflicting emotions. This trailer for a Futurama fan film looks bizarre, disturbing, and freaks me out a bit, but at the same time it seems perfect and I love it. If you're familiar with the children's show Lazy Town, it's like they hired that makeup artist to make everyone in the world of Futurama. The end result is a kitschy but somehow hyper-realistic representation of the cult classic Matt Groening show.

There's something missing here, but they're on the right track. I just have no notes on how to correct it.

Ben Affleck’s BATMAN Solo Film Rumored to Be Set in Arkham Asylum

An interesting new rumor has surfaced regarding the Batman solo film that Ben Affleck is in the process of developing. This is just a rumor, so until there’s any official news on this, treat it as such.

The following information comes from some reliable sources for Batman-on-film. They claim that the the movie will be set in Arkham Asylum, which would obviously be an insane setting for the Dark Knight! They also report that plot will involve Batman actually being locked up in Arkham.

They don’t offer any details other than that. We don’t know why or how that would happen, but it sounds like they will be taking a cue from the popular video game franchise. The news does in a way coincide with a previous report that the film will be crammed with villains. According to that report:

"Many, if not most, members of Batman's rogue's gallery will be making appearances in the film. It's going to be crammed with Bat villains, which means that just about every major bad guy you've ever wanted to see in a movie will be in this movie. According to my sources Affleck and Geoff Johns, who has been working with him on the film, want to make the definitive Batman film. They want to tell the ultimate Batman story, and to do so they're going to bring in all the big guns. They're going to have a big, sprawling Bat universe already in place."

In my opinion, the best way to cram so many villains into a Batman story would be to have Batman locked up in Arkham with them. I doubt this would be a direct adaptation of the game franchise, but if this is all true, it will obviously be inspired by it, and they could also find inspiration in Grant Morrison’s Arkham Asylum: A Serious House on a Serious Earth.

I love the thought of seeing Affleck’s version of Batman kicking ass in Arkham, so it'd be great if these rumors are actually all true. Affleck is co-writing the screenplay with Geoff Johns, and I hope whatever they end up doing turns out to be awesome. We’ll just have to wait and see.

New Trailer for the Great-Looking Outlaw Thriller HELL OR HIGH WATER

“The banks have been robbing me for thirty years.”

A new trailer has been released for the great-looking outlaw thriller Hell or High Water. This looks like a fantastic modern-day western that follows two brothers played by Chris Pine and Ben Foster. The embark on a bank robbery spree in an effort to try and save their mom's farm. Of course, their actions have consequences and and their crime spree puts them on a collision course with a west Texas Ranger played by Jeff Bridges. He’s on the verge of retiring, but before he does, he’s determined to take them down.

The story touches on a lot of things that have been fueling anger in the U.S. such as economic despair, the hatred people have towards banks, and how big money is the ruling class in America, among other things. It sounds like one of those kinds of films where working class audiences will be rooting for the robbers.

The movie was directed by David Mackenzie from a script written by Taylor Sheridan (Sicario), and it will be released in theaters on August 12th.

Godzilla Wreaks Havoc in New Trailer for Toho's GODZILLA: RESURGENCE

Godzilla unleashes destructive hell on Tokyo, Japan in this awesome new trailer for Toho's Godzilla: Resurgence. This is seriously the most gnarly version of Godzilla I think I've seen. The creature just looks more menacing and insane than he's ever looked before.

As much as I enjoyed Gareth Edward's version of Godzilla for Legendary Pictures, I prefer Toho's version more. I feel they can offer a truer and purer vision of the character. The new trailer you're about to watch features a beautifully orchestrated score with no dialogue, and a good amount of the footage shows the military trying to blow Godzilla away. The visuals of the movie that I'm seeing in the trailer are extremely cool, and it ends perfectly with the classic Godzilla roar.

Godzilla: Resurgence was directed by Hideaki Anno and Shinji Higuchi. The movie is set to be released in Japan on July 29th, 2016. There's no word yet on when it will get a U.S. release, but I'll keep you updated!

Video: Matt Damon Shows You How To Fake Fight

Matt Damon had me cracking up this entire video! In his own words, action actors like to act like tough guys, but in all actuality, they're dancers more than fighters. Fight choreography is a lot more difficult to manage than you would guess. You have to make sure you aren't actually injuring the person you're fighting while at the same time making the action look passable enough to appear on film.

I'm sure occasionally someone catches a rogue punch, but after four Bourne movies, you'd have to imagine Damon is kind of a pro at this. He acts like one at least!

New DOCTOR STRANGE Poster Gives A Full Look at Benedict Cumberbatch's Sorcerer Supreme

Marvel Studios' Doctor Strange seems primed to contain some of the trippiest, weirdest footage of any MCU movie so far (oh, and it's also supposed to be dark enough to be considered a borderline horror movie). We should learn a lot more about the movie at this week's presentation at San Diego Comic-Con, but a fan on Twitter has tracked down a new poster for the movie that hasn't officially been released yet to tide us over until then. Take a look below:

That's one of our best looks yet at Benedict Cumberbatch in full Doctor Strange regalia, with the Eye of Agamotto hanging prominently from his neck. The Infinity Stones have played a big part in Marvel movies leading up to this, and the Eye is almost certainly going to be the Time Stone, leaving me to wonder if Thanos will make a brief appearance in this movie or if he'll end up acquiring the stone at some other point before the two-part Infinity War movies begin. If you're going to be at SDCC this week, maybe ask Kevin Feige about it at the panel!

First Look at SCOTT PILGRIM Creator Bryan Lee O'Malley's New Comic Series, WORST WORLD

Even before Universal adapted it into a cult classic movie, I loved Bryan Lee O'Malley's Scott Pilgrim comic series. It not only has great action and memorable set pieces, but it thrives on quieter character moments and the explorations of relationships, all while infusing video game and pop culture influences and being laugh out loud funny. It's a terrific piece of work, and I highly recommend reading it if you haven't.

I missed O'Malley's 2014 graphic novel Seconds, but it's on my list of things to check out. Now I have another thing to add to that ever-growing list: EW has published the first look at O'Malley's newest comic series, called Worst World. The plot is largely being kept secret at this point, but here's a brief teaser:

Set in present-day Los Angeles, Worst World centers on 30-something Benny and 20-something Aubrey, and will be the first in a planned trilogy of graphic novels, each clocking in over 300 pages. O'Malley will once again be teaming with his partners from Seconds, including art assistant Jason Fischer and colorist Nathan Fairbairn.

Sounds great to me, and O'Malley himself will be signing copies of this print at this week's San Diego Comic-Con (info here), so be sure to stop by and say hello if you see him!

STAR TREK BEYOND Stars Share Some of Their Favorite Anton Yelchin Memories

Exactly one month ago, we wrote about the tragic death of Anton Yelchin, who died in a freak car accident at the young age of 27. His death is a devastating loss for his family, friends, fans, and the film industry as a whole, and at the Star Trek Beyond junket in Beverly Hills this past Friday, Yelchin's co-stars in that movie and director Justin Lin shared some of their favorite memories about working and interacting with the multi-talented young performer.

Karl Urban ("Bones"): It’s devastating to lose a family member. We’re at a point where we should be celebrating not only this film, but this beautiful man. This talented man. And for all of us, it’s almost incomprehensible to be at the point where we have to talk about him in the past. The pain of his loss is still very raw. We went and spent time with Anton’s family, and we know that they will be very, very proud of his contribution to the film, and this film will forever be probably the most special experience for all of us. It represents the golden period where our family was fully together for the last time. And it really was, as Simon said, the best summer of our adult lives. We loved him so much. We miss him terribly.
Chris Pine (Kirk): He was just a good guy. Very sweet. He was beautifully, authentically Anton. There was not much of a censor on the boy. I remember one of the first times I met him, like nine years ago or whatever, he was seventeen, and I invited him back to my trailer to play guitar because I knew he played the guitar and he played the guitar really, really, really well. And he said, ‘I can’t, man, I’ve gotta go back to my trailer.’ I asked him why, and he was translating a [laughs], he was translating an esoteric Russian novel into English because that’s what he wanted to do. Eight, nine years later, I talked to him and he was still translating it, still reading this book on physics by this French philosopher, still trying to get all of us to go to these — [laughs] we were in Vancouver and he wanted to go see some German neo-expressionist film that he’d talk about as if everyone had or should have seen it…he was a great guy, and he was just totally fearless. You try to grasp something that’s a positive out of losing such a good guy and I think it’s just be fearless creatively. He was always working on stuff. He had music projects, photography projects, he was going to direct his first film this summer, he was just spectacularly interested in life in a really great way.
Simon Pegg (Scotty): It still doesn’t feel real. I can’t quite find a way to process it, to be honest. It won’t sink in, and my heart goes out to anybody who loses anybody suddenly or prematurely. It’s such a psychological blow to even contemplate. One thing I’ve said at some of the introductions is that watching the film and seeing Anton up there so alive and forever preserved as he will be in all his films, that’s something we should be happy about. That we’ll get to see him again. Anton was just…I spent a lot of time with Anton in Vancouver last year. [laughs] He used to call me up in the middle of the night sometimes just to talk. He was an incredibly intelligent man. Like Chris was saying, he was translating this Russian novel. He was still working on it, in fact too, making notes in it, translating this novel. He would talk about film so fluently, and so maturely that he’d make us all look like dummies. I’d have to engage my university brain just to sit down and talk to him about movies because he was exhaustively encyclopedic. He had this ridiculous laugh, where he’d go [imitates laugh], and we used to laugh at him for it, and then he would laugh more, and then we would laugh more. He was an incredible soul. He was a beautiful, beautiful boy, and I loved him so much. We all did. It’s not something that’s easy to talk about, it’s not something we really want to be having to talk about, other than we miss him.
Lin: I think it’s still very raw. Still processing. I actually went back, there was a group of us who were still finishing the film. We had a few weeks to go, and we went back and I went through all of the footage again. The one thing that when I was going through it, the interaction with Anton for me, it’s so clear that when he shows up every day, he does it for the right reasons. We’re making movies. A lot of times when you make movies, a lot of this petty, weird stupid stuff happens, but he just shows up with a smile on his face and has ideas. I always just looked forward to…every day he’s on set, we’d huddle up and he’d throw out like a hundred ideas, even though maybe he’s just in the background or something. It’s just the way it should be, you know? I know for a fact that he’ll live on with me, and with everybody he’s worked with and interacted with.

Seeing one of Yelchin's final performances in this movie is tremendously sad. He had so many amazing years ahead of him, and his success in the indie film sphere was an indicator that his range extended far beyond simply being a cog in a franchise machine. Rest in peace, Mr. Yelchin.

Netflix Officially Announces MAKING A MURDERER Season 2

Netflix's Making a Murderer documentary captivated the world last December and into January of this year, with the series spurring on the kinds of huge cultural discussions normally reserved for prestige television shows. There have been hints at a potential follow-up, but now Netflix has made it official: they're bringing the show back for a second season.

Filmmakers Laura Ricciardi and Moira Demos are returning behind the camera, and "the new installments will take fans of the acclaimed documentary series back inside the story of convicted murderer Steven Avery, and his co-defendant, Brendan Dassey, as their respective investigative and legal teams challenge their convictions and the State fights to have the convictions and life sentences upheld."

The upcoming episodes "will provide an in-depth look at the high-stakes post-conviction process, as well as, the emotional toll the process takes on all involved. The episodes will offer exclusive access to Avery’s new lawyer Kathleen Zellner and Dassey’s legal team, led by Laura Nirider and Steve Drizin, as well as intimate access to the families and characters close to the case." It's unclear how many new episodes there will be, or when they'll hit the streaming service.

It'll be interesting to see new episodes of the show, especially in light of a lot of key elements that the filmmakers controversially chose to leave out of their first season. I think it's fair to say that the criminal justice system in this country is pretty messed up, but I'm wondering if A) audiences might be burned out on this case because it made nationwide news earlier this year and seemed to be all anyone talked about for a while, and B) if the filmmakers will try to justify or walk back some of their earlier decisions on camera because of the light backlash that came out when people really started diving into these cases.

What do you think? Are you burned out on Making a Murderer, or do you want to see more?

Retro 1980s Fan Petition to Have Michael Keaton Removed as Batman in Tim Burton’s Film

$

The initial casting of Michael Keaton as Bruce Wayne/Batman in the 1989 Tim Burton-directed film was quite an unexpected surprise for some fans back in the day. I can see how it would have been hard to imagine Keaton as the Dark Knight, but as you all know, he ended up being awesome in the role and he was the perfect choice to take it on.

Some of the more hardcore Batman fans at the time were incredibly upset by the casting and they actually started a petition in the late 1980s to have Keaton removed from the role of Batman. Knowing what we know now, the petition is pretty damn funny. Here’s what it says:

It has recently been announced that the actor MICHAEL KEATON has been chosen to play the BATMAN in the big budget film being directed by TIM (BEETLEJUICE) BURTON for release in 1989 (the 50th anniversary of the BATMAN). If the producers of this movie are truly committed to leaving the camp image of the 60’s TV show behind and presenting to the world the DEFINITIVE DARK KNIGHT DETECTIVE they can’t allow MICHAEL KEATON to play this role! Don’t get me wrong, KEATON is a fine comedy actor who has done exemplary work in the past in such films as BEETLEJUICE, MR. MOM, NIGHT SHIFT, etc. but he’s definitely not the sort of imposing figure needed to define the ultimate creature of the night, the BATMAN! Help us to stop this ridiculous decision before filming starts in September/88—-sign the petition below and let’s bring the folks at WARNER BROTHERS FILMS to their senses!!!
We, the undersigned, strong insist that the decision to cast MICHAEL KEATON as the BATMAN is a major mistake and must by reversed before filming starts on BATMAN: THE MOVIE.

Back in those days it was a little harder to get people to sign petitions. It makes me wonder how much time these guys spent standing outside of movie theaters and traveling to comic shops to get the signatures that they got. One thing is for sure, and that is the passion of fandom still hasn't changed! We are seeing petitions like this all the time these days, it's just easier to get the signatures they need with the various online petition websites.

I’m curious to know what these people thought of Michael Keaton as Batman after they saw the movie.

Harley Quinn Concept Art Teases Alternate SUICIDE SQUAD Costume Designs

It's sort of crazy to think that the Comic-Con trailer for Suicide Squad came out a full year ago. We've been analyzing trailers, posters, and photos from this movie for over a year, and we're finally getting down to the last few days before the film's theatrical release. Just this morning, Warner Bros. released a new trailer for the film, and I'm sure we'll be seeing even more TV spots arriving in the coming days. In the meantime, though, check out these two alternate costume options for Margot Robbie's Harley Quinn from a scan of a new EW print issue that the team over at ComicBookResources did. These are a couple of pieces of concept art from costume designer Kate Hawley, and CBR explains what's found in the EW article that came along with the photos.

Hawley explains that she pulled iconography from the comic book source material, as well as rock and roll icons and the Instagram accounts of Mexican drug cartels. She also explains that the goal behind Harley's design was to make her look sexy on Harley's own terms and not cater to what a man (re: Joker) would find particularly sexy.

What do you think about Harley's alternate costumes?

Suicide Squad hits theaters on August 5th.

Jackie Chan and Johnny Knoxville Bicker and Fight Their Way Through SKIPTRACE Trailer

While Jackie Chan provided a voice in this year's Kung Fu Panda 3, it's been a while since we've actually seen him in anything Stateside — especially an action-heavy throwback to his Rush Hour days. Well, Skiptrace is here to scratch that itch, and it sees Chan teaming up with Johnny Knoxville in a wacky-looking action comedy.

This one is directed by Renny Harlin, the guy behind Die Hard 2, Cliffhanger, The Long Kiss Goodnight, and Deep Blue Sea. It seems like something of a small comeback for both Harlin and Chan, and looks enjoyable enough if you're feeling nostalgic to the kinds of movies that were made at the start of this millennium.

Skiptrace will be available on DirecTV starting July 28th, and in select theaters and On Demand starting September 2, 2016.

Fists and feet are flying in this explosive action-comedy starring Jackie Chan and Johnny Knoxville. For years, by-the-book Hong Kong detective Benny Chan has tried to avenge his partner’s murder at the hands of a drug lord. When Benny learns that freewheeling American gambler Connor Watts (Knoxville) has the evidence he needs, he teams with Connor to get justice.
