Has the Main Villain of Marvel’s THE DEFENDERS Been Revealed?

$

As we already know, the Marvel Netflix series’ are all leading up to an epic team-up event called The Defenders. Daredevil, Luke Cage, Jessica Jones, Iron Fist, maybe the Punisher, and more will be teaming up to protect Hell’s Kitchen from some kind of villainous threat. We now might have an idea of who that villain could be. The following information comes from Screen Geek, which is a site I’m not really familiar with, so as of right now, this is just a big fat rumor.

The report claims that Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Iron Fist, and Luke Cage could be assembling to fight a villainous character named Mephisto. This character would bring more of a supernatural element into the Marvel Netflix universe. They say that one of the reasons this character is being considered is because it could help set up the next wave of Marvel Netflix shows, rumored to include Blade, Ghost Rider, and Moon Knight. Here’s the exact quote from their source:

“Marvel is talking about setting Mephisto as the prime antagonist for the Defenders. Some may say that this villain wouldn’t fit the TV shows but that’s why they’re incorporating Iron Fist – to set up the supernatural element. This would also help set up the next phase of the Netflix shows, as Moon Knight, Blade, and Ghost Rider are being considered.“

I’m honestly not really that familiar with Mephisto, but after reading up on him, he sounds like he would make a great and interesting villain for the team of Defenders to take on. Here’s a brief description of the character:

“Mephisto is an extradimensional demon of immense power who often poses as Satan. He continually schemes to make bargains with people for their souls. Mephisto especially covets the souls of heroes for their purity and has repeatedly sought the soul of the noble Silver Surfer. Mephisto has also contended with Thor, Doctor Strange, Daredevil, the Fantastic Four, and many others.”

A lot of fans have been speculating that the Defenders will battle The Hand, but Mephisto is definitely a more intriguing option. It would also expand on the supernatural element of the Marvel Universe that is being introduced in the upcoming Doctor Strange film. Again, this is only a rumor, nothing is confirmed, and it could be complete bullshit. But, what do you all think about the possibility of Mephisto being the villain in The Defenders?

If he is the villain, it will be interesting to see how the team will actually beat him!

Twisted GAME OF THRONES-Inspired Fan Trailer for FINDING DORY

In case you’ve ever wondered what Pixar’s Finding Dory would be like had it come from the mind of George R.R. Martin, YouTuber MrStratman7 has edited together a Game of Thrones -tyle fan trailer for Finding Dory. The result is dark and awesomely twisted, especially with the amount of blood that’s been added. It’s not really that hard to imagine how a family movie like Finding Dory could be transformed into Game of Thrones style film, after all, the original film, Finding Nemo, opens with Marlin's wife and most of his kids being murdered by a sea creature. It’s like the franchise was destined to get a Game of Thrones-style fan trailer!

SPIDER-MAN: HOMECOMING Will Be a Diverse Film That Explores New Things

spider-man-homecoming-will-be-a-diverse-film-that-explores-new-things

Spider-Man: Homecoming director Jon Watts is currently doing press for a crazy-looking horror movie he made called Clown, which as you might expect, is about an evil clown. He made the film a couple years before his Sundance hit Cop Car, which is the film landed him the Spider-Man directing gig. He’s not sure if the people at Marvel or Sony have seen Clown, though. When talking about that he said:

“I don’t know if they’ve seen Clown. I’m a little nervous. They liked Cop Car, so I wasn’t going to say, ‘So, I also made a horror movie where a clown monster eats children.’ I wasn’t just going to bring that up.”

I’m personally looking forward to seeing Clown because it looks like a wicked horror flick. Watts is currently getting ready to shoot Spider-Man: Homecoming soon, and in an interview with the Daily Beast, he opens up about it, capturing the reality of Queens, NY, and how diverse it’s going to be. He says:

“Peter Parker goes to high school in Queens, and Queens is one of—if not the—most diverse places in the world. So I just wanted it to reflect what that actually looks like.”

The director goes on to say that he’s focusing on trying to bring something new to Spider-Man, something that hasn’t been done in the previous five movies that have been made.

“It’s been really fun to just look for things that none of the other Spider-Man movies have really explored before, and decide if that’s something we want to work into that. And really making it a high school movie, and committing to that, and not having that just be the beginning of the movie. The John Hughes sort of tone. When you’re looking at it through that prism, it really opens up the door to a lot of possibilities.”

I can’t wait to start actually seeing some stuff from this film so that we get a better sense of what Watts is envisioning for the character and this whole new story.

The script for the film was written by Vacation and Horrible Bosses screenwriters John Francis Daley and Jonathan M. Goldstein, and it will be released on July 7th, 2017.

The cast features Tom Holland as Spider-Man/Peter Parker, Marisa Tomei as Aunt May, Robert Downey Jr. as Tony Stark/Iron Man, Michael Keaton as The Vulture, Zendaya, Donald Glover, Martin Starr, Laura Harrier, Kenneth Choi, Michael Barbieri, Logan Marshall-Green, and Tony Revolori (The Grand Budapest Hotel).

GAME OF THRONES: Best Moments From Season 6, Ep. 9 "Battle of The Bastards"

Warning: spoilers ahead for season 6, episode 9 of Game of Thrones, entitled "Battle of The Bastards." If you haven't seen the episode yet, turn back now.

This season, I'm going to try to write up some quick thoughts about each episode the day after it airs. I won't get too deep into full-on recaps (you can find those all over the internet, and you've probably already read a few today if you're into that sort of thing) and will instead focus on what I consider to be each episode's best moments. This can be as many or as few as I want, and will likely vary every episode — today, there are three. I'll also toss in some additional observations that don't fit into the "best moments" category, which you can find at the bottom of the post. For the best moments of earlier episodes this season, click here. Onward!

The Battle of The Bastards

"Hardhome" director Miguel Sapochnik did tremendous work in this week's episode. I was worried the entire hour would be focused on one big battle; don't get me wrong, I like battles as much as the next guy, but an entire episode of it can get repetitive if it's in the wrong hands. But there were plenty of nice character moments mixed in, and Sapochnik turned what must have been a hell of a shoot into an epic, exciting (if somewhat predictable) hour of television. That long continuous shot of Jon in the fray was particularly impressive. (RIP, Wun Wun.)

Ramsay's Gladiator Moment

After Jon had been through hell in the battle, Ramsay, untouched by the battle, took him up on his offer to fight in single combat. It's a similar to the cowardly move that Joaquin Phoenix's character pulls at the end of Gladiator when he fights an injured Maximus. Was it satisfying to see Ramsay get his comeuppance? Of course. But Sansa's little smile as she walked away from his dogs eating him alive was slightly undercut by the sheer amount of blood on her hands because of her stupid decision-making earlier in the episode. I'm glad she got her vengeance, but now what? If she's going to be sketchy as hell with her leadership, I'm not sure she's qualified to run Winterfell. It probably won't matter for long, anyway — I'm guessing the White Walkers are going to be on the way south soon.

Dany's Dragon Riding

Last week, I wrote about how I saw some early footage of Disney's Pete's Dragon remake, which contained dragon riding that looked better than anything we've seen so far on Game of Thrones. It made sense to me that a mega-budget movie would be able to churn out better results than a(n admittedly expensive) TV show, but this week proved me wrong. Despite some issues the show's had with Dany flying around on Drogon's back and it not always looking as spectacular as it could, it was practically flawless this week. You could tell the show spent some serious money on the VFX here, and it paid off in a huge way with glorious shots of the dragons roasting some of the masters' fleet.

Additional Observations

If someone can tell me Sansa's thought process, I'd be grateful. We see her write a letter to Littlefinger requesting help from the Knights of the Vale, and she doesn't tell Jon or Davos about this because...? I've seen people suggest that it's because she thinks Jon is a terrible tactician (which was proven true when he let emotion get in the way and went against his own plan) and she was worried about him A) inadvertently revealing that information to Ramsay, or B) insisting they wait to attack until help arrived, and Ramsay might have been able to scheme his way to victory even if the Knights were there. But the big problem with that logic is Sansa had absolutely no way of knowing if the Knights were actually going to make it to the fight at that key moment. All of the northern soldiers and Free Folk who died in that battle lost their lives entirely because of her decision, and she should be ashamed of herself.

The showrunners (who also wrote this episode) got a little cutesy with the Dany/Yara stuff, didn't they? I'm sure there are pages of fan fiction already devoted to that relationship.

Rickon. Dude. For God's sake, at least zig zag a little bit. At least try to make it difficult for Ramsay to kill you. (Did you notice that Rickon didn't utter a single word since he's returned to the show? I don't know if they just didn't want to pay the actor more, or what, but that was sort of a weird choice.)

Having Davos find the charred stag he carved for Shireen seemed a little convenient, especially since it was made of wood and probably would have just burned up in the fire. That whole subplot seems like something he should have found out about a long time ago.

Jon and Melisandre's conversation about why she brought him back served as a nice precursor to the battle, especially since she introduced the possibility that he was resurrected simply to die again in this fight. That suggestion rattled Jon, and I think a ballsier version of this story would have actually had him get trampled in the brawl. That feels like the kind of thing George R.R. Martin set out to do with this story from the start — subvert expectations. That would have been a "Ned Stark getting beheaded" moment, with everyone thinking Jon would slash through the army in order to get to Ramsay because he's the hero, but he'd actually get trampled because sometimes that happens in battle. (Same if the Knights of the Vale had arrived too late.) But Jon is too important to this story now, and we still haven't (officially) found out who his mother is, so while he might ultimately die before the series is over, there's still some ground to cover before that could happen.

Final Trailer For THE LEGEND OF TARZAN Won't Cause Any Minds to Be Changed

In between finishing the traditional Harry Potter saga and kickstarting the franchise again with the spinoff Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, director David Yates took a trip to the jungle and filmed The Legend of Tarzan for Warner Bros. Despite some rumors of post-production troubles, the movie is on track to hit its release date, and the studio has just released a final trailer for the movie.

Let's put it this way: this isn't going to sway your opinion one way or the other. If you're already convinced this is a movie you think is worth seeing, it's going to reinforce that decision; if, on the other hand, you think the movie looks like a laughable mess, this won't provide anything to dissuade you from thinking that. Personally, I think I'm in the latter camp on this one, but we'll see how things shake out when the movie hits theaters on July 1.

Watch: The Cast Says Goodbye as PENNY DREADFUL Ends After Season 3 Finale

If you've been watching Penny Dreadful and were confused by last night's season finale, let me clear things up for you, it's over. Show creator John Logan has ended the series with last night's finale, and kept it a secret to prevent spoiling the ending for the fans of the show. Logan gave his reasoning to Deadline, explaining why he decided to end the series at what many would argue was the height of its popularity:

That’s what the ending of this series is, it is meant to be a strong, bold, theatrical ending because I think that’s what our fans like and to water that down with an announcement or having them know I think would be an act of bad faith.

In a press release, Logan said:

“I created PENNY DREADFUL to tell the story of a woman grappling with her faith, and with the demons inside her. For me the character of Vanessa Ives is the heart of this series,” said Logan. “From the beginning, I imagined her story would unfold over a three-season arc, ending with Vanessa finally – and triumphantly – finding peace as she returns to her faith. To have had fans that have embraced us so passionately has been one of the most gratifying experiences of my career. This has been a very personal project for me and I will be forever grateful to have worked with the incredible cast led by Eva, Josh and Tim, our amazing Irish crew, and with our wonderful partners at SHOWTIME and Sky.”

Fans of the series: was it time to go, or were you disappointed in the show's end?

Man Dies Watching THE CONJURING 2, Then Disappears

If you were wondering whether or not The Conjuring 2 was really that scary, you must not have seen The Conjuring! That scary hype has only amplified with Dread Central reporting a man has died watching the film. The Times of India says a 65-year-old man complained of chest pain in Sri Balasubramaniar Cinemas while watching the movie, and his friend transported him to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Here's the crazy part...when professionals showed up to take the body to the morgue, they discovered that the man and his friend had both disappeared! Like...neither one was still in the hospital room. HOW MESSED UP IS THAT?!

Sorry About The Bad Batch of Ads on GeekTyrant

Saturday night, a new type of ad started showing up on GeekTyrant that blocked the full page, had autoplay video and audio, and had a five second timer to even be able to minimize this pop-up. When you finally could minimize the ad after watching and listening for five seconds, all you could do was mute it — you couldn't even close it.

The second I saw these ads, I immediately sent a support ticket to our ad partners to have it removed. The team there is usually pretty quick, but it being Saturday night and Father's Day the next day, the "Bad Batch" was live on GeekTyrant until Monday morning.

If you got one (or several, ouch) of these ads, I'm extremely sorry you had to deal with the annoyance. At GeekTyrant, we've drawn the line at audio that autoplays and pop-ups that can't be dismissed with a single click. If you see any annoying ads in the future, please email me directly freereyes@geektyrant.com

This weekend's events gave our team a lot to think about, and...

WAR ON EVERYONE Red-Band Trailer: Alexander Skarsgard and Michael Pena Laugh It Up as Corrupt Cops

Alexander Skarsgard will step into the iconic loincloth when he appears in The Legend of Tarzan this summer, but soon, he and Micheal Pena will be hamming it up as corrupt cops in a new comedy from John Michael McDonagh, the writer/director of The Guard and Calvary. Icon Film has just released a red-band trailer for the movie (via /Film), and it looks pretty wild.

McDonagh is a terrific filmmaker with a flair for great dialogue and a knack for creating laugh out loud moments, so even though this trailer looks a little scattered, I'm still excited to see how this movie turns out. Sadly, while it opens in the UK on September 30, it doesn't have a U.S. release date yet, but we'll try to keep you posted when that information becomes available.

War on Everyone follows two corrupt cops in New Mexico who set out to blackmail and frame every criminal unfortunate enough to cross their path. Things take a sinister turn, however, when they try to intimidate someone who is more dangerous than they are. Or is he?

THE FUNDAMENTALS OF CARING Trailer: Paul Rudd, Craig Roberts, and Selena Gomez Hit The Road

Netflix has released a new trailer for The Fundamentals of Caring, the upcoming road trip comedy starring Paul Rudd, Craig Roberts, and Selena Gomez. It looks like a nice little indie project with a good mixture of humor and heart, and that cast is solid enough that even if the story ends up being lackluster, they'll be able to elevate it with the charm factor.

The film hits the streaming service this Friday, June 24.

The Fundamentals of Caring follows Ben, a retired writer who becomes a caregiver after suffering a personal tragedy. After 6 weeks of training, Ben meets his first client, Trevor, a foul-mouthed 18-year-old with muscular dystrophy. One paralyzed emotionally, one paralyzed physically, Ben and Trevor take an impromptu road trip to all the places Trevor has become obsessed with while watching the local news, including their holy grail: the World's Deepest Pit. Along the way, they pick up a sassy runaway and a mother-to-be who help test the pair’s survival skills outside of their calculated existence as they come to understand the importance of hope and true friendship.

Moving Tribute Video and Art Created in The Wake of Anton Yelchin's Death

As you have probably heard by now, actor, musician, and artist Anton Yelchin was killed in a tragic car accident this past weekend. It was utterly shocking news, and the people who knew and loved him are mourning his loss. Yelchin was only 27 years old and his untimely death hit a lot of his fans hard. Today we have a couple of things for you to see that beautifully pay tribute to the actor. The first is a video from JoBlo that came with the note:

It's with a heavy heart that we announce that a brilliant young actor was tragically lost on this day. Anton Yelchin was an incredible acting talent with a vast array of films for only being 27 years old. To try and honor his memory as much as we possibly can, we've put together this small tribute in his memory and we wish the best to his family and friends. RIP Anton Yelchin and thank you for everything.

The second is a sketch created by tumblr user mrscratch0753, and it depicts Yelchin being greeted by Leonard Nimoy (Spock) and fellow Star Trek actors Deforest Kelley (Dr. McCoy) and James Doohan (Scotty), who have all passed on.

You can see both tributes below. Anton Yelchin is an incredible talent that is going to be missed.

It’s father’s day, and I have no real time to finish this, but I wanted all my Trekkie friends and family all around the world to have this.

Eli Roth Directing Bruce Willis in MGM's DEATH WISH Remake

$

MGM's remake of Death Wish has been troublesome for the studio ever since they brought Bruce Willis on to star. Writer/director Joe Carnahan (The A-Team, The Grey, Smokin' Aces) left the project because he didn't agree with that casting, and since then, the movie has gone through multiple directors who can't seem to agree with the studio about the direction of the film. But it appears the studio won't let this one go, because they've brought on yet another director to try to bring the movie to life.

Deadline reports that Eli Roth (Hostel, Knock Knock) has taken over the director's chair, and he'll direct a screenplay by Scott Alexander and Larry Karaszewski (Ed Wood, The People vs. O.J. Simpson), who have apparently rewritten Carnahan's script (Nightcrawler's Dan Gilroy and Justified's Graham Yost also rewrote this one, but it looks like Alexander and Karaszewski's take is the one that's going to be realized on screen).

I've said this before, but a remake of Death Wish seems unnecessary because James Wan's excellent Death Sentence already exists. Check that movie out if you haven't seen it and you're looking forward to this one.

INDEPENDENCE DAY Director Roland Emmerich Thinks Marvel Movies Are "Silly"

$
0
0

For the past twenty years, Roland Emmerich has been one of Hollywood's go-to guys for disaster porn blockbusters. Movies like Independence Day, The Day After Tomorrow, The Patriot, 2012, and White House Down are absolutely stuffed with profoundly ludicrous moments, but thanks to a new interview with The Guardian, it now appears Emmerich is totally oblivious to the insanity of his own movies — he just called out Marvel movies for being "silly."

“When you look at my movies it’s always the regular Joe Schmo that’s the unlikely hero. A lot of Marvel movies, they show people in funny suits running around. I don’t like people in capes. I find it silly when someone dons a superhero suit and flies. I don’t understand it. I grew up in Germany, that’s probably why.”

I'm not sure that growing up in Germany is a great excuse for finding superhero stories silly, but I guess we should give him the benefit of the doubt on that. (I'd love for some of our German commenters to sound off about their thoughts on his statement.)

Also maybe worth noting for Emmerich, who has a bit of a "holier than thou" attitude here: his new movie Independence Day: Resurgence isn't even screening for critics until 11am Friday morning, hours after it opens on Thursday night. That's the clearest possible sign that the studio has absolutely zero confidence in the film. It sounds like the director could benefit from a little self-awareness on his part.

The ninth episode of Game of Thrones' sixth season, "Battle of The Bastards," contained so many huge setpieces and massive moments that the entire production was even more of a logistical nightmare than the already-challenging "normal" episodes of the HBO fantasy series.
