Screen Watchers Guild: Ep. 233 — FINDING DORY

Video: Take a Trip Through Horror Movie History From 1895-2016

Horror buffs and non-horror lovers alike will probably enjoy editor Diego Carrera's thorough video that highlights some of the genre's most defining cinematic moments from 1895 all the way up until 2016. It's cool to watch the evolution of the form play out over time, and it's also interesting to see precursors to some of horror's most iconic moments appear years earlier; the shot of a guy chopping down a door with an ax from 1921's The Phantom Carriage looks like a direct inspiration for the classic scene in which Jack Nicholson chops through the door in The Shining.

Cool Montage Explores The Way Colors Convey Emotions in Film

I'm sure you've thought about how different colors represent different emotions when you're watching movies, but Lilly Mtz-Seara's slick video montage is a nice examination of that idea condensed down into less than four minutes. Obviously this isn't a strict coding of what these colors mean in films across the board because filmmakers can play with color however they choose, but it's a nice, condensed look at the shortcut of what these colors generally mean in terms of cinematic language. Check it out below:

A New Animated GHOSTBUSTERS TV Series is Being Developed By Ivan Reitman

Sony Pictures is really better big on the Ghostbusters franchise. They haven't even released their upcoming new film yet, but the studio is already developing a new animated series. The show will be called Ghostbusters: Ecto Force and it is set in the future of 2050. Original Ghostbusters director Ivan Reitman is spearheading the series so there's hope that it will actually turn out awesome.

There aren't many other details on the series but the studio is looking to release it sometime in 2018. As many of you already know, this isn't the first time we've seen a Ghostbusters cartoon series. I was a big fan of The Real Ghostbusters, which was released in the 80s. Unfortunately, it's because of that series that Ghostbusters 2 turned out to be more of a cartoony film. They wanted to cater to the kid crowd. Kind of like what they are doing with this new film!

With Reitman on board and leading the charge on this project, chances are it will  solid series. Also, since the movie is set in the year 2050, we're looking forward to seeing a whole team of new characters with some futuristic ghostbusting technology. I'm curious to see what Reitman is planning for it.

Flashpoint Confirmed to Kick Off THE FLASH Season 3

After a lot of rumor and speculation since the second season finale of The Flash, Grant Gustin has confirmed that season three will launch with one of the character’s most popular storylines: Flashpoint. The end of the season two finale pretty much set it up, so it’s great to see that the team behind the series is moving forward with it.

Gustin revealed that he had read the script for the season three premiere, and then with the permission of writer and executive producer Greg Berlanti he said that the title of the episode was "Flashpoint" and he’s not messing around! You can read the series of tweets from Gustin below:

It’s not really a shocking reveal as the fans seemed to see it coming from a mile away, but it is nice to have this confirmation. It gives us something we can get extremely excited about.

In the story, Barry Allen finds himself in an alternate timeline in which his mother is no longer dead, and most of the world’s heroes are now more like villains and some of the villains are heroes. For example, Captain Cold is actually a Central City hero named Citizen Cold. That should give you get the idea of what could happen in the series3.

There’s no word on how this storyline will effect Arrow, Supergirl, and DC’s Legends of Tomorrow, all of which are expected to have an epic four-part crossover. However, EW makes the following suggestion:

Technically, those storylines could feasibly continue without a direct effect — these heroes move on in this timeline, while Barry has created an entirely new timeline in which his mother never died. Or — hold onto your hats for a moment here — we could see Flashpoint leading up to another comic book storyline: Crisis on Infinite Earths, which The Flash has also been teasing since its pilot, with the crossover potentially serving as the episode that realigns the timelines and maybe even brings Supergirl to our Earth. But those are theories for another time.

Are you excited to hear about the new direction of The Flash and where it could lead?

Stan Lee Says MALLRATS Is His Favorite Movie That He’s Been In

Over the years, Stan Lee has appeared in several comic book movies and TV shows. Out of everything that he’s done, though, his favorite project turned out to be pretty surprising choice. During his panel at Denver Comic-Con this past weekend, Lee was asked what his favorite movie role of all time was, and he revealed that it was Kevin Smith’s 1995 comedy Mallrats. Here’s his exact quote:

"Gee, that's a hard one. I got a big kick out of Mallrats. But it wasn't a cameo; I really had a role in the movie. Funny thing about that: in the movie, I'm talking to the boy who was the lead, who was very unhappy becuase he was having trouble with his girlfriend, and I mentioned to him, 'I remember I once had a girlfriend and I lost her but I've never forgotten her, and I think about her all the time,' something like that. Now, I went home, and my wife said to me, 'Now what is this about that girlfriend?' And I learned you have to be very careful about how you explain movies to your wife."

I thought for sure that he’d pick one of the superhero movies that he had a hand in creating. But it sounds like it was his favorite because it was more of an actual role in which he played himself. He had such a good time with it that he’s already set to reprise his role in the upcoming Mallrats series that’s in development. There’s no word on how big his role in the series will be, but I imagine that it will be the same size as his role in the movie. Maybe even a little bigger since it will be a 10 episode series.

Marvel will be bringing both Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 and Doctor Strange to San Diego Comic-Con this year, and I can’t wait to see what they are going to show off! As we wait to see what they have in store, we have new plot descriptions for both of the films thanks to Stitch Kingdom.

The synopsis for James Gunn’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is pretty vague, but it’s not like they are going to give us the full story and spoil the fun! One of the main plot points that the film will focus on is Peter Quill’s true parentage and his mysterious father. It also teases old villains becoming new allies and “fan-favorite characters” from classic comics showing up! Here’s the synopsis, so let the speculation begin on who those other fan-favorite characters could be!

“Set to the backdrop of ‘Awesome Mixtape #2,’ Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 continues the team’s adventures as they traverse the outer reaches of the cosmos. The Guardians must fight to keep their newfound family together as they unravel the mysteries of Peter Quill’s true parentage. Old foes become new allies and fan-favorite characters from the classic comics will come to our heroes’ aid as the Marvel cinematic universe continues to expand.”

The new synopsis for Scott Derrickson’s Doctor Strange doesn’t give us much more information that we didn’t already know, but it teases that his powers will be used to protect the Marvel cinematic universe.

“Marvel’s Doctor Strange follows the story of the talented neurosurgeon Doctor Stephen Strange who, after a tragic car accident, must put ego aside and learn the secrets of a hidden world of mysticism and alternate dimensions. Based in New York City’s Greenwich Village, Doctor Strange must act as an intermediary between the real world and what lies beyond, utilizing a vast array of metaphysical abilities and artifacts to protect the Marvel cinematic universe.”

The Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 cast includes the return of Chris Pratt as Peter Quill, Zoe Saldana as Gamora, Dave Bautista as Drax, Vin Diesel as the voice of Groot, Bradley Cooper as the voice of Rocket, Michael Rooker as Yondu, Karen Gillan as Nebula, Sean Gunn as Kraglin, Pom Klementieff as Mantis, Elizabeth Debicki, Chris Sullivan, and Kurt Russell. It's set to be released on May 5th, 2017.

Doctor Strange stars Benedict Cumberbatch as the Sorcerer Supreme, Chiwetel Ejiofor as Baron Mordo, Tilda Swinton as The Ancient One, Benedict Wong as Wong, Rachel McAdams, Michael Stuhlbarg, Scott Adkins, Amy Landecker, and Mads Mikkelsen. The film is set to hit theaters on Friday, November 4th, 2016.

Steven Spielberg on His '80s References in READY PLAYER ONE, What He’s Cutting and Keeping

For those of you that have read Ernest Cline's Ready Player One, then you know it’s packed with glorious references from the '80s including the work of director Steven Spielberg. While at the press event for his upcoming film The BFG, Spielberg talked about those '80s references and explained that some of the things will be changed for the film, specifically with his own past work, but not everything. He also said that the reason he took on the challenge of adapting the book into a film is because of his love of the '80s!

Spielberg was asked how he was planning to prevent the retro reference-filled story from being a personal "victory lap" of the 1980s, and this was his reply:

“I think we were pretty awesome in the 1980s. I love the '80s, and I think one of the reasons I decided to make the movie was that it brought me back to the 1980s and let me do anything I want, except for my own movies. I've cut most of my movies out of Ernie's book, except for the Delorean and a couple of other things that I had something to do with. I've cut a lot of my own references out. I was very happy to see that there was enough without me! The '80s was a great time to grow up.”

Hell yeah, it was! It makes sense that he would cut out some his references because it would just be weird but also meta for him to include some of those things. Luckily, not everything from his past projects was cut, like the DeLorean! It will be interesting to see how it is actually going to be used in the movie.

There are a couple of references to the DeLorean in the book. At one point it’s mentioned that James Donovan Halliday (Mark Rylance), a reclusive, mysterious, billionaire restored one of the vehicles from the Back To The Future production to drive around. One of the ways I can see it being implemented, though, is that Wade Watts (Tye Sheridan) wins a virtual version of the car and drives it to a party hosted by Ogden Morrow (Simon Pegg), who is Halliday's former partner and fellow creator of the gaming system Oasis.

Anyway, it's good to know that not all of the references to the films Spielberg made in the '80s will be cut. I wonder what the “couple of other things” will be! For a little refresher on what the story is about, here's the book description:

At once wildly original and stuffed with irresistible nostalgia, READY PLAYER ONE is a spectacularly genre-busting, ambitious, and charming debut—part quest novel, part love story, and part virtual space opera set in a universe where spell-slinging mages battle giant Japanese robots, entire planets are inspired by Blade Runner, and flying DeLoreans achieve light speed.
It’s the year 2044, and the real world is an ugly place.
Like most of humanity, Wade Watts escapes his grim surroundings by spending his waking hours jacked into the OASIS, a sprawling virtual utopia that lets you be anything you want to be, a place where you can live and play and fall in love on any of ten thousand planets.
And like most of humanity, Wade dreams of being the one to discover the ultimate lottery ticket that lies concealed within this virtual world. For somewhere inside this giant networked playground, OASIS creator James Halliday has hidden a series of fiendish puzzles that will yield massive fortune—and remarkable power—to whoever can unlock them.
For years, millions have struggled fruitlessly to attain this prize, knowing only that Halliday’s riddles are based in the pop culture he loved—that of the late twentieth century. And for years, millions have found in this quest another means of escape, retreating into happy, obsessive study of Halliday’s icons. Like many of his contemporaries, Wade is as comfortable debating the finer points of John Hughes’s oeuvre, playing Pac-Man, or reciting Devo lyrics as he is scrounging power to run his OASIS rig.
And then Wade stumbles upon the first puzzle.
Suddenly the whole world is watching, and thousands of competitors join the hunt—among them certain powerful players who are willing to commit very real murder to beat Wade to this prize. Now the only way for Wade to survive and preserve everything he knows is to win. But to do so, he may have to leave behind his oh-so-perfect virtual existence and face up to life—and love—in the real world he’s always been so desperate to escape.
A world at stake.
A quest for the ultimate prize.
Are you ready?

Ready Player One arrives in theaters on March 30th, 2018.

The internet is going to be flooded with Justice League movie news today as numerous reports from set visits are flying in! To start off, we have the first official plot synopsis for the film, the logo for the movie, and our first look at Batman's Batmobile in the film, which doesn't seem to look much different from the one we saw in Batman v Superman. Now let's jump into the synopsis:

“Fueled by his restored faith in humanity and inspired by Superman’s selfless act, Bruce Wayne enlists the help of his newfound ally, Diana Prince, to face an even greater enemy. Together, Batman and Wonder Woman work quickly to find and recruit a team of metahumans to stand against this newly awakened threat. But despite the formation of this unprecedented league of heroes—Batman, Wonder Woman, Aquaman, Cyborg and The Flash—it may already be too late to save the planet from an assault of catastrophic proportions.”

As you can see, it doesn't give us much info, but there's enough there to spark some interest. It should be fun to see all these characters together in a movie. Hopefully, Zack Snyder can actually pull it off and finally give fans something awesome! Man of Steel and Batman v Superman were mediocre movies, but it'd be great if this time we got a film that actually blows us away.

We'll find out when Justice League hits theaters November 17th, 2017. The movie stars Ben Affleck as Batman, Henry Cavill as Superman, Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman, Jason Mamoa as Aquaman, Ray Fisher as Cyborg, and Ezra Miller as The Flash with Willem Dafoe in a mystery role and J.K. Simmons playing Commissioner Gordon.

Willem Dafoe's JUSTICE LEAGUE Role Revealed to Be Vulko

$

Earlier this year we learned that Willem Defoe had joined the cast of Zack Snyder's Justice League, and today we know who exactly he'll be playing! According to the various reports from the film's set, he will be taking on the role of Vulko, who is a mentor to Jason Momoa's Aquaman.

According to JoBlo, the character is described as being from another generation than Aquaman "with his costume being more courtly and elaborate, including silvery, washed out colors and a lot of gil elements around the neck, with the idea being that Atlantean culture was once above water and that their skin has adapted to breathing underwater."

Here's a little history on the character for those of you not familiar:

Nuidis Vulko was the the royal advisor to Aquaman. He was one of the leaders of Atlantis' scientific community, and several times ruled Atlantis in Aquaman's absence. When Aquaman left the throne to live among the surface dweller's, it was Vulko that was left to deal with the backlash of Arthur's attempts to bring the Atlaneans out of isolation from the surface world. When the Atlantean royal seal went missing, most of the Atlanteans believed that it was a surface dweller diplomat that was responsible and they sought war with the surface because of this. It was Vulko, with the help of Aquaman and Nuada Silverhand, that was able to diffuse the situation by proving that Ocean Master was actually responsible.

The character has superhuman strength and is strong enough to take on Superman if he wanted to. He also has the ability to leap great heights. There's no word on how big of a role Vulko will have in Justice League, but he will also most likely appear in the standalone Aquaman film coming out in 2018.

Defoe seems like the perfect actor to take on this role, and I can't wait to see what his character looks like!

Justice League is set for release on November 17th, 2017.

JUSTICE LEAGUE Will Be Influenced by Jack Kirby, Plus New Plot and Villain Details

A lot of official information about Zack Snyder's upcoming Justice League has been unleashed today. We've already brought you a synopsis, logo, a Batmobile photo, and information on who Willem Dafoe is playing in the movie, but now we have a lot more to share that many of you might be interested in learning. Some of these things involve plot details, villain updates, and the kind of vibe that the film will have.

The movie is said to have a lighter tone that has a heavy Jack Kirby influence to it, which makes me so happy to hear! It's expected to be more of a fun, ensemble superhero story that will focus on the building of the team who will unite to fight a common threat. According to JoBlo:

The film takes places months after BVS, with Bruce heavily affected by Superman’s death and seeking to honor his sacrifice in building the Justice League. Rather than being a Batman on the edge, he is now a Batman full of hope, hinged entirely on created a team that can unite and fight common threats, while redeeming mankind, having learned his lessons in BVS.

Most of the film focuses on Bruce assembling the team of heroes, and Superman's big return will happen later in the film. There aren't really any details involving how he will return, but Snyder jokingly said it might be “a little longer,” which is significant if you remember the Death of Superman comics.

It was also confirmed that Steppenwolf is one of the key villains in the story, but he's not necessarily the only one. As previously reported, Darkseid is very much a part of the film, and his influence will be very present. They are still in the process of casting Steppenwolf, and Lex Luthor is said to have a part in the movie as well, we just don't know how big of a role it will be. Just in case you don't already know, Steppenwolf was one of Darkseid's elite soldiers and his uncle.

Steppenwolf has thousands of years of experience in most forms combat, tracking, strategy and weapons, especially in swords and axes, he's skilled in riding/training animals and also a expert driver, having driven virtually all vehicles of Apokolips. He is one of the most feared and respected Darkseid's generals, being responsible for leading the Apokolips army, during the invasion of other planets, especially the Dog Calvary.

Stay tuned because we have some more Justice League movie news coming!

Noomi Rapace is Officially Back as Elizabeth Shaw in ALIEN: COVENANT; First Look at Danny McBride On Set

There hasn’t really been any mention of Noomi Rapace’s involvement with Alien: Covenant since the official information began rolling out. This led many to speculate and report that she wouldn’t be in the film, but apparently that’s not the case.

According to Deadline, Rapace is on the Australian set of the film shooting a week's worth of scenes. The movie is set 10 years after the events of the first film, and the last time we saw Shaw, she was rocketing off into the universe looking for the home of the Engineers with Michael Fassbender’s android character David.

There’s no information on what exactly her part in the film entails, but with only a week's worth of shooting, I imagine it won’t be that big.

Elsewhere this morning, the Alien Anthology Twitter account released our first look at Danny McBride on set speaking with director Ridley Scott:

That account seems like a good thing to follow if you're into Alien news.

Bound for a remote planet on the far side of the galaxy, the crew of the colony ship Covenant discovers what they think is an uncharted paradise, but is actually a dark, dangerous world -- whose sole inhabitant is the "synthetic" David, survivor of the doomed Prometheus expedition.

The movie also stars Demián Bichir (The Hateful Eight), Jussie Smolett (Empire), Amy Seimetz (Upstream Color), Carmen Ejogo (Selma), Callie Hernandez (Machete Kills), Billy Crudup (Watchmen), and Katherine Waterston as Daniels. There’s a big rumor about who Waterston's character is that you can read about here if you want.

Alien: Covenant is set to be released on August 4, 2017. To catch up on all of our news about this movie, click here.

Campaign Documents Reveal Donald Trump's Bizarre MAD MEN Connection

The internet is reeling after reports surfaced from Mediaite saying presidential candidate Donald Trump sent money to an ad agency called Draper Sterling. For those who didn't watch Mad Men, the name is the same as advertising executives Donald Draper and Roger Sterling, who ran their own ad agency in the show. While it is funny that this money was going to a fictional company, I'd like to point out that the actual name of the company in the show was SCDP (Sterling, Cooper, Draper, Pryce) and before that Sterling Cooper, and later, Sterling Cooper & Partners — at no point was it ever "Draper Sterling."

Still, the name was enough to bring curious eyes to the agency, which revealed $35,000 was shelled out to an address that, oddly enough, connects to a New Hampshire home. After much hubbub and jokes, it was revealed that Draper Sterling LLC is a registered business, although it's unclear as to exactly what their function is other than a clue pointing towards "medical devices" and cross-species organ transplants (?!).

Obviously, I'm not here to report on political junk so I'm not gonna weigh in on what's happening or whether it's valid or not. All I know is I was incredibly excited for a moment that someone actually named a valid business using Mad Men as a reference!

THE GIRL WITH ALL THE GIFTS Trailer: A Zombie Movie With A Twist

The Walking Dead may not have exactly reintroduced zombies to pop culture, but the popularity of the show has certainly contributed to a massive resurgence of zombies showing up in TV and film over the past few years. We've seen tons of riffs on all of the established tropes (Shaun of the Dead is still the best at this, by the way), and now a new movie is taking a swing at the genre and putting its own twist on it.

The Girl With All The Gifts stars Sennia Nanua, Gemma Arterton, Glenn Close, and Paddy Considine, and is directed by Colm McCarthy (Peaky Blinders).

The near future; humanity has been all but destroyed by a mutated fungal disease that eradicates free will and turns its victims into flesh-eating “hungries”. Only a small group of children seem immune to its effects.

At an army base in rural England, this group of unique children are being studied, subjected to cruel experiments by biologist Dr. Caldwell. Despite having been infected with the zombie pathogen that has decimated the world, these children retain normal thoughts and emotions. And while still being subject to the craving for human flesh that marks the disease, these second-generation “hungries” are able to think and feel, making them a vital resource in the search for a cure.

The children attend school lessons daily, guarded by the ever watchful Sergeant Parks. But one little girl, Melanie, stands out from the rest. Melanie is special. She excels in the classroom, is inquisitive, imaginative and loves her favourite teacher Miss Justineau.

When the base falls, Melanie escapes along with Miss Justineau, Sergeant Parks and Dr. Caldwell. Against the backdrop of a blighted Britain, Melanie must discover what she is and ultimately decide both her own future and that of the human race.

Sounds interesting, and the trailer seems like it contains elements of the terrific video game The Last of Us. Check it out below and let us know what you think. The movie hits UK theaters on September 23, but there's no official U.S. release date at this time.

Zack Snyder's JUSTICE LEAGUE Revealed To Be Single Standalone Film

$
0
0

When Justice League was officially announced, we learned that it would be a story arc that would be spread across two separate films. Well, today we've learned that the movie Zack Snyder is currently working on is a single complete standalone project.

During an interview with Empire, producer Deborah Snyder interestingly says that the plan was always only going to be one Justice League film. She explains:

“We were only ever planning, and we are only doing, Justice League."

There was then the follow-up question, "So, no part two then?'" to which Snyder answered, “No.” This is so weird because Justice League: Part One and Justice League: Part Two were both announced and given release dates of November 2017 and June 2019.

To make things even more confusing, Zack Snyder seems to contradict that, saying that there will still be another Justice League movie in 2019? Will it be another standalone Justice League movie with a different title?

I'm not sure what this all means, but maybe everyone should get on the same page as to what they are planning because I'm confused now. I'm just going to assume that we will be getting a second Justice League, and what that film will involve is a complete mystery.

Maybe their game plan has changed. One thing I hope isn't happening is that they have condensed the full story arc of these two films into one single movie, because that could turn out to be a complete mess. Hopefully, this all gets clarified.

I'll be a little more straightforward than Collider was when they posted this. I'm a huge fan of Blade Runner, and when I saw the news that the first poster promoting Blade Runner 2 had been leaked I was ecstatic to check it out! Then I saw it:

What the hell is that?! This photo was snapped at the Licensing Expo in Las Vegas and I'm sitting here wondering if maybe they're selling the licensing to commission the poster?! Seriously, that can't be something you are going to go to market with! That's garbage! They don't even have the trademark text!

Well, so much for more info. Hopefully, we learn SOMETHING before the film's 2017 release date!

Cool New Details For Batman's Two New Suits in JUSTICE LEAGUE

$

The Justice League movie news continues to roll in, and now we have some cool new details regarding the costumes and looks that some of the characters will be sporting in the film. In this article, I'm going to focus on Ben Affleck's Batman.

Batman will have two different suits in the film. One of them is called the "Classic Batsuit" which will be worn throughout most of film. It's basically the same suit Batman wore in the previous film, but this one has been tweaked and improved. In an interview with ComicBook.com, costume designer Michael Wilkinson said:

"People who look very closely might notice that we have these new armor plates underneath the mesh, the carbon fiber weave on his suit. So we thought it would be cool for him to have a few very carefully placed pieces of armor hidden underneath his bat suit. The seaming is [underneath], also; we cannot put this very graphic way of doing the seaming that we like for the breakup of the suit."

Wilkinson went on to reveal that The Dark Knight will also be given a new cowl, and he explains some of the differences we'll see:

"We've come up with a new cowl. It's very close to the last one, but again new technologies, new materials (now made from polyurethane instead of foam latex), tweaking has allowed us to take that one even further. One big new detail is that Zack wanted the idea that there's a little more sense of armor and deflection on his gauntlets when he is shot at. So I designed this thing based on a Samurai. We borrowed it from Bruce Wayne's history too, so it has a connection with Asian martial arts in Japan. So I thought that would be perfect. We modernized it to the Wayne Tech aesthetic here. We changed the straight shank of the blade from last time. It's something a little more aggressive."

The second Batman suit is called the "Tactical Batsuit," which has been upgraded with more protection so that the caped crusader will be able to better handle more powerful threats that come his way at the end of the film.

"So in the final chapter of our film, Batman realizes he has to step up his game a little bit and he and Alfred have been working on developing a suit that's even more protective and offers more deflection than the classic suit. So in a sense, it's a piece of armor..."

Wilkinson then revealed some of the details:

"We won't shoot this for about two months, which seems like two years in the costuming world. But we have two months to develop this. This is the artwork here. So you can see the classic suit underneath, but on top are straps and layers of the carbon fiber, strengthening armor plates, he's got sort of a leather layer upon here that he is strapping all over his plates onto the wrapping around his body and offering just a little more protection than the old. He's also going to get a new cowl with some new tech details and that gives him even more protection. We're going to do some goggles for him, a new tech cape made out of our carbon fiber weave."

He then expanded on Batman's goggles, explaining:

"We loved the way in the comic books he's always drawn with white flashes of eyes, so we thought of cool ways of doing it. We liked the way that they catch the light and give that classic image from the comic books. But he'll also be piloting a new vehicle that he will need these goggles for."

Both of these suits and all of the upgrades that have been made for them are there to strengthen Batman and give him the ability to stay strong and kick ass. Especially against the deadly villainous threats that he will be going up against.

I loved the look of Batman in Batman v Superman. That one of the things they got right, and I'm excited to see what these two new suits look like.

Justice League will open in theaters on November 17, 2017.

Ben Affleck Confirms He's Directing Solo BATMAN Film, Teases a Key Plot Element

If you haven't noticed, there's been an onslaught of Justice League news today as bloggers invited to the film's London set have been given the go-ahead to publish their stories about what they saw and heard there. We've written a lot about the movie already, but there's another thing that's worth talking about: notable DVD commentary track provider Ben Affleck finally, officially, confirmed that he's directing a standalone Batman movie. He's spoken about the solo film (hopefully titled The Batman) before, but always in a "here's what I would do if I were to direct this" kind of way. Now he's owning it, and teasing a little of what we can expect the tone to be. When asked why he's an executive producer on Justice League, he told Birth.Movies.Death:

Why I’m an executive producer is that I’m directing one of the movies. So there’s sort of this cross pollination of story and characters and I don’t want to give any of that stuff away, but it basically means that there are some things that might happen in my Batman that are affected by... I mean, here we are in the police station in Gotham city. There’s a potential that something like this might exist in that story. So it’s a creative way that DC came up with of kind of being a filmmaker-driven company and entity and also making sure that the right hand knows what the left hand is doing so that there’s collaboration and supervision. So that somebody doesn’t go sailing off, causing problems for your movie with their movie. You know, in a way, it’s also a kind of a courtesy. You know what they’re doing, one hand knows what the other is doing, and I get to weigh in on stuff that impacts the Batman stuff.

He also teased one key plot element that we can expect in his solo film: Batman will lean more on his detective roots than he did last time around:

It’s definitely, the world’s greatest detective aspect of Batman is more present in [Justice League] than it was in [Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice], and will probably be expanded upon further in a Batman movie that I would do. I think all the great Batman stories are, at their heart, detective stories. That’s why they feel like noir movies in a way. Somehow feels like it could be The Maltese Falcon. But at their heart good Batman stories are, like I said, detective stories.

As for when we can expect the film, Affleck doesn't commit:

I think they have a date for it. Although, I don’t know if I would necessarily be able to make that date because I don’t have a script that’s ready yet. So that’s my, my timetable is I’m not going to make a movie until there’s a script that I think is good because I’ve been on the end of the things when you make movies when you have a script that’s not good yet and it doesn’t pan out. [laughs]

But where is he currently in the writing process?

I have a script, we’re still working on it, and I’m not happy enough with it yet to actually go out there and make a Batman movie, for which I have the highest of standards, I would say. That’s something that would have to pass a very high bar for me. It’s not just like, “Yeah, that might be fun, let’s go try this out.”

Affleck reportedly has full creative control over his movie, so I'm very excited to see what he does with it. Now we just need to wait and see if he can perfect the script in time to hit WB's mysterious release date.
