Parody: Neil deGrasse Tyson Takes On The Web and Corrects Everyone

$

For legal purposes, I must state that if you couldn't tell by the picture, that is not, in fact, Neil deGrasse Tyson. This video by Above Average is a parody, but it's a damn good one that the internet deserves! How long will we let Tyson inject himself in to ruin the things that we love?! Will we sit by idly and let science overtake our fiction?! Like a horse, I say neigh.

Real talk though, this video is pretty great. Check it out below.

GHOST IN THE SHELL Casting: THE WOLVERINE's Rila Fukushima Joins Scarlett Johansson in Live-Action Adaptation

After courting some controversy with accusations of whitewashing its lead role by casting Scarlett Johansson, DreamWorks' live-action film adaptation of Ghost in the Shell has added a new cast member. THR reports that Rila Fukushima has come on board, though it's unclear which role she'll play in the new movie. Maybe she'll be one of the Section 9 soldiers?

Fukushima is best known for playing Yukio in The Wolverine and Katana on Arrow (she also popped up in one episode of Game of Thrones last year). I haven't read the manga or seen the anime, so I'm sort of flying blind on this one. I know the official synopsis:

Based on the internationally-acclaimed sci-fi property, “GHOST IN THE SHELL” follows the Major, a special ops, one-of-a-kind human-cyborg hybrid, who leads the elite task force Section 9. Devoted to stopping the most dangerous criminals and extremists, Section 9 is faced with an enemy whose singular goal is to wipe out Hanka Robotic’s advancements in cyber technology.

I know the studio did some unfortunate testing to see if they could make ScarJo appear more Asian. I know it currently has Pilou Asbæk, Michael Pitt, and Takeshi "Beat" Kitano on board to star alongside Johansson. And I know Rupert Sanders (Snow White and The Huntsman) is directing. That's about it. Well, at the very least, the producers have finally cast an Asian actress in this movie that's supposed to be about Asian people. Seems like the least they could do.

WTF: This Man Lives as a Human Puppy

Being geeks, it's not unfair to say we are open to various paths in life no matter how crazy they may be. But I think this one may give me some pause. Tom Peters left his fiance in 2008 to become her puppy dog, and they've been together ever since. This is...man, I'm having trouble trying to find the words for it. I don't understand it, and I'm not entirely sure that I want to.

Either way, it deserves your attention, and you should know that this is a thing. (This is real by the way. I've checked.)

GAME OF THRONES Showrunners "Apologize" For The Most Recent Episode

Last Sunday's episode of Game of Thrones left a huge mark on the show's fans and readers of George R.R. Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire saga alike, but if you haven't seen it yet and somehow made it to this page anyway, turn back now.

Showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss went on Jimmy Kimmel Live last night to "apologize" for the episode...not for killing Hodor, but for all of the stupid jokes and wink-wink comments you're going to have to endure for years every time someone asks you to "hold the door." I've already seen about thirty pictures of Hodor's face taped onto elevator buttons and doorstops, so if you were thinking about doing that, please don't. It's already been done to death, and it's only been a few days since the episode aired.

Video Essay: Hollywood's Obsession with Intertextuality

$

0

Nerdwriter is back with a new video essay, and this one leans heavily on a troubling trend in Hollywood these days: an obsession with what he calls "intertextuality." Essentially, it means that studios love creating moments that are designed to evoke responses from an audience by referencing things you're already familiar with: things like lifting a scene directly from a comic in a comic book movie, or framing a shot identically to its animated predecessor in a live-action remake. It's not exactly a revelatory observation, but I think it's important that everyone is at least aware that they're being manipulated in this specific way so that maybe we'll be able to demand better from filmmakers in the future.

When studios throw a familiar reference at us (say, the appearance of Sauron in The Hobbit trilogy), we shouldn't just eat it up because we recognize the reference. Of course we recognize the reference. That part is practically a given within geek culture today. The important part is what does that reference mean to the story currently being told? Does it enhance it, or distract from it? Is there a narrative reason for it being there, or is it just empty fan service? Something to think about next time you sit down at the multiplex.

Karl Urban Comments on His THOR: RAGNAROK Role, Skurge The Executioner

$

Last week it was announced that Karl Urban (Star Trek, Dredd, LOTR) had been cast in Marvel’s Thor: Ragnarok as Skurge the Executioner. I’ve been hoping to see this character in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and Urban is the perfect choice to bring him to life. Skurge is an Asgardian warrior who was an enemy of Thor in the comics until he realized he was being used by the Enchantress.

IGN recently caught up with Urban and asked him about signing on to play this character in the Thor: Ragnarok, and he offered the following reply:

"I read a fantastic script that was action-packed and full of great characters. When I heard who was involved -- and the cast list dropped yesterday -- and [saw] the opportunity to work with [director] Taika Waititi, who I think is one of the most brilliant directors coming through, I made the decision it was something that I wanted to be a part of.
"And the character is fantastic. He's got a great arc to him. Obviously, I can't say too much about it, but I'm really thrilled to be a part of the Marvel universe and to be working on Thor: Ragnarok."

Urban didn’t offer any other details, but he did jokingly say:

“Suffice to say, I have it in my contract that I don't have to shave my head until after my Star Trek press!”

Skurge has mostly been portrayed as a villain in the comics, but he did end up finding redemption and becoming a hero. I’m not exactly sure how he’ll be portrayed in the MCU, but if he ends up being a character that will only be used in this film, I imagine we’ll see both the bad and good side of him.

If they plan on playing with this character in films beyond Thor: Ragnarok, then I hope he’s a full-on villain. I’d much rather see a drawn out story arc for him, but we’ll see. If you aren’t familiar with the comics, then you might want to stop reading here. He just has such a powerful story arc of redemption. After he realized Enchantress was using him, he fought alongside Thor against Hela and her armies. Skurge ended up fighting them to the death, sacrificing himself so that Asgardian army and the human souls could escape her realm. This earned him an honorable death and place in Vahalla.

Thor: Ragnarok hits theaters on November 3rd, 2017.

STAR WARS CELEBRATION Poster Art Includes ROGUE ONE and EPISODE VIII Awesomeness

Disney has officially released some promo art for Star Wars Celebration 2016, and it’s loaded with lots of cool stuff from both Rogue One and Episode VIII. It features several familiar characters from both movies including Daisy Ridley as Rey, Mark Hamill as Luke Skywalker, Felicity Jones as Jyn, Ben Mendelsohn as Director Krennic, and more.

It also offers us a new look at the black Deathtroopers, the new Shoretroopers, and a new AT-AT that is being called AT-ACT, which stands for "All Terrain Armored Cargo Transport." I love this poster — there’s so much to pick out of it.

The poster was revealed in an episode of The Star Wars Show that I included below for you to watch if you want. It features Star Wars: Episode VIII director Rian Johnson and Chewbacca on the set of the film. it also has an interview with the Chewbacca lady that is blowing up the internet at the moment.

Mike Tyson Cast in KICKBOXER: RETALIATION

Mike Tyson has been cast in the upcoming action film Kickboxer: Retaliation. This is a sequel to Kickboxer: Vengeance, which has yet to be released. The sequel is currently shooting in California and Nevada and will head back to complete its production in Thailand.

The story centers on the character Kurt Sloane played by Alain Moussi, who is “brought back forcibly to Thailand to fend for his life against a new formidable foe, portrayed by Hafþór Júlíus Björnsson, who plays The Mountain on Game of Thrones.”

Tyson is set to play a “tough convict forced into a world of fighting behind bars.” He joins the previously announced Paige VanZant in the project.

The movie is being directed by Dimitri Logothetis (Stephen King’s Sleepwalkers) from a script that he wrote. The filmmaker holds two black belts, and he had this to say in a statement:

“Words cannot express my excitement for this second installment. The passion I have for this genre just keeps getting bigger and the cast we have assembled is phenomenal. Expect to see spectacular, non-stop, action-packed martial arts from real fighters.”

Producer Robert Hickman added:

“This is a monumental moment for us. We have already signed on 14 champions from the sporting world, mostly decorated fighters from the UFC, being able to add Mike Tyson as a cast member adds a whole new element and excitement to the film.”

Sounds like it could be fun, but I’m just waiting to see Kickboxer: Vengeance, which is set to be release in September. That film was directed by John Stockwell and stars Moussi, Jean-Claude Van Damme, Dave Bautista, Gina Carano, Georges St-Pierre, and Darren Shahlavi

This is a reboot of the original 1989 Kickboxer, which is a classic. Hopefully, these new films turn out as badass as the talent makes them out to be.

Review: WARCRAFT Is an Extreme Fantasy Adventure Film

$

0

When I saw the first footage of Warcraft at San Diego Comic-Con a couple of years ago I was completely blown away. At the time, I thought that it would take fantasy films to a whole new level, and I couldn’t wait to see the fully completely movie. Well, I saw it and I’m happy to say that it completely delivered the awesomeness that I was hoping for! Warcraft could have gone one of two ways. It could have been a complete disaster or it could have been an incredibly entertaining action-packed adventure film. At this point, it’s up to the audience to decide which one it is.

Just so you know, I haven’t played Warcraft since Warcraft II, but I’ve continued to follow the development of the game over the years, and I am up to date on what is going on. It’s just something I haven’t been able to commit the time to, as much as I know I would enjoy it.

I had faith that director Duncan Jones would be able to pull this film off. The guy is a hardcore fan of the game, and he’s such a talented filmmaker. I believe that he and his talented team of people gave us the best possible film that Blizzard or any fan of the game could have asked for. This film is so damn cool, and I was blown away by some of the stuff that I saw. Fans of the game are going to enjoy the hell out of it, especially with all of the Easter eggs that were thrown into it. There’s no doubt that they’ll be able to pick out and dissect every little detail. Make no mistake, this is a Warcraft movie made by fans for fans.

Warcraft is such an extreme fantasy film, and I honestly don’t think audiences will have ever seen anything like it before. You could try to compare the film to The Lord of the Rings or any other fantasy type movie, but Warcraft is in a league of its own. This thing truly does take fantasy films to a new level, and I absolutely loved it. The whole magical aspect of the film was insanely cool, and the visuals were absolutely stunning! I really hope that general audiences will be able to accept and enjoy the stuff that they see in it. If they don’t, I can see how it would turn them off. You've got to be really invested in fantasy to truly appreciate what Jones and his team have accomplished

After the trailer was released a lot of people seemed to complain about the visual effects saying that they looked cheap. Well, after seeing the film in IMAX 3D, I can tell you that the effects and CGI used to bring this story and its characters to life on the big screen are far from cheap, and they are far beyond what we would see in the video games. The details that were put into creating this fantastical universe and its characters are insane, especially with the creation of the orcs, their skin and the clothes and armor that they wore. After seeing the movie I don’t see how anyone could call the visual effects that were created by Industrial Light and Magic cheap.

Then you also have the spectacular practical effects that were created by Weta Workshop. All of the armor and weapons that were created for the human characters were real. I’ve seen a lot of that stuff in person, but seeing it all in action in the movie is pretty damn awesome. There were also the sets that were built for the film, which turned out to be absolutely beautiful.

Between the visual CGI and the practical effects, Warcraft is probably one of the most visually stunning films ever made. As we all know, though, the visuals aren’t what make a movie great. What makes a movie great is the story, script, and characters. This film solidly handles all three of those things, and they are what make this movie so fantastic.

The story is set in the peaceful realm of Azeroth, which is threatened when a fearsome horde of Orc warriors invade their home looking to find a place to colonize because their realm is dead. Each opposing side faces their own challenges and difficulties as both sides are just looking to survive, but at what cost? The humans are facing complete destruction while the Orc face extinction. The story focuses on the heroes of each side as they try and find a way to co-exist for their posterity's future. Working towards a peaceful resolution comes at a great cost, though, and there are heavy sacrifices.

What I loved about the story is that it’s not your normal good humans versus bad orcs kind of movie like The Lord of the Rings. It’s more complicated than that. There are layers to this story that involve good characters on both sides and there are factions within those groups that cause the real problems. I think it is awesome that it focuses on and explores individuals and relationships from both sides so we can actually connect with the characters, not just on the side of the humans, but also on the side of the orcs, which is something we rarely see. There are also some very surprising plot points in the film that I didn’t see coming at all that add so much emotional weight to the story they wanted to tell.

The characters that were brought to life so incredibly well in this movie. You really care for each of the heroes and want them to succeed as they try to make the best decisions possible for their people. The actors who brought these characters to life all gave stellar performances. The actors who played the character for the Alliance include Travis Fimmel as Anduin Lothar, Dominic Cooper as King Llane Wrynn, Ben Foster as Medivh, Ben Schnetzer as Khadgar, Ruth Negga as Lady Taria, and Paula Patton as Garona. The side of the Horde is be made up of Toby Kebbel as Durotan, Rob Kazinsky as Orgrim, Clancy Brown as Blackhand, and Daniel Wu as Gul’Dan. As awesome as everyone was in the film, I have to say that Foster really stood out above the rest. He just threw himself into his role and played this sorcerer character brilliantly.

Warcraft is a well-rounded film that has everything that I love about the movies — action, drama, comedy, and adventure. It’s easily the best video game adaptation that has ever been made, and it’s made in a way that fans of the game, the fantasy genre, and general audiences will enjoy and appreciate. I just hope that general audiences give this movie a chance! There seem to be some people out there that just aren’t interested. If those people actually go out and see it, though, I am confident that they will be pleasantly surprised by the awesomeness that this film has to offer.

Make no mistake, the movie is probably going to end up with a lot of mixed reviews. Some people aren't going to be into it, some won't allow themselves to be engulfed by the experience. But if you truly appreciate the fantasy genre then you'll most likely appreciate what this film accomplishes. I'll admit, some of the dialogue is a little rough around the edges, but regardless of that, I think Jones has done something epically spectacular, and I hope he gets to complete the trilogy of films that he and Blizzard set out to make.

If you’re on the fence about Warcraft, don’t be! Go see this movie! It’s seriously a spectacular film that begs to be seen on the big screen. It’s an absolute blast!

Marvel Villain Diamondback Revealed in LUKE CAGE Set Photos

As production on Marvel’s Luke Cage continues in New York, a new series of photos from the set has surfaced. This set of photos confirms that Willis Stryker, aka Diamondback, will show up as a villain in the series, and it looks like we’ll see Luke Cage face off with him. It was rumored awhile back that Diamondback would play a part in the series.

Diamondback is being played by Erik LaRay Harvey (Boardwalk Empire) in the series. There are a couple of versions of a character named Diamondback in the Marvel universe, but this one was introduced in 1971 in Luke Cage, Hero for Hire #1. The two characters have a very complicated past, and there’s a reason they don’t get along. Willis was a friend of Luke’s when they were young, but Willis ends up framing Luke for a drug charge and gets him sent to prison. So there’s plenty of reason for them to fight.

After a sabotaged experiment leaves him with super strength and unbreakable skin, Luke Cage becomes a fugitive trying to rebuild his life in modern day Harlem, New York City. But he is soon pulled out of the shadows and must fight a battle for the heart of his city–forcing him to confront a past he had tried to bury.

Mike Colter plays the title role in the series, and he is joined by Simone Missick as Misty Knight, Frank Whaley as Rafael Scarfe, Mahershala Ali as Cottonmouth, Theo Rossi as Shades, Alfre Woodard as Mariah Dillard, and the return of Rosario Dawson as Claire Temple.

Luke Cage is set to premiere on September 30th, 2016.

More Famous Landmarks Are Destroyed in Posters for INDEPENDENCE DAY: RESURGENCE

more-famous-landmarks-are-destroyed-in-posters-for-independence-day-resurgence

One thing is for sure, the aliens of Independence Day have done their research on the famous landmarks of the world, and they have come back to finish the job in the sequel. They already destroyed a bunch of them in the first film, and now they are coming back to destroy even more. These aliens hate the world's landmarks, and they won't stop until they are gone. That's the real overall plot of the Independence Day franchise!

Jeff Goldblum's David Levinson even jokes about it in the trailer saying, "they like to get the landmarks," and in this new series of international posters we see the villainous aliens going after the Statue of Liberty, the Washington Monument, the Eiffel Tower, Big Ben, and the Marina Bay Sands towers in Singapore. I also included some high resolution photos from the film as well.

We always knew they were coming back. After INDEPENDENCE DAY redefined the event movie genre, the next epic chapter delivers global catastrophe on an unimaginable scale. Using recovered alien technology, the nations of Earth have collaborated on an immense defense program to protect the planet. But nothing can prepare us for the aliens’ advanced and unprecedented force. Only the ingenuity of a few brave men and women can bring our world back from the brink of extinction.

Independence Day: Resurgence will be released in theaters and show us the fireworks June 24th.

New Photo from ALIEN: COVENANT Features Katherine Waterston as Daniels

A new official photo from Ridley Scott's Alien: Covenant was released today and it gives us our first look at Katherine Waterston in her role as Daniels. She is one of the lead explorers in the film, and the image came with the caption, “Nowhere to run.” There's no doubt that all of the characters in this film are going to eventually find themselves in tight and intense situations.

I'm excited about this new Alien film. I think Scott learned a lot of lessons on what not to do with Prometheus, and it's going to be great to see him fully immerse himself in this world again and hopefully give us a series of new Alien films that fans can be proud of.

Earlier this week some eerie set photos surfaced for the film, which you can see here. The film is said to include every version of xenomorph, and Scott is shooting for a hard R rating on this thing. To catch up on all the news regarding this highly anticipated sci-fi film, click here.

Bound for a remote planet on the far side of the galaxy, the crew of the colony ship Covenant discovers what they think is an uncharted paradise, but is actually a dark, dangerous world -- whose sole inhabitant is the "synthetic" David, survivor of the doomed Prometheus expedition.

The movie also stars Michael Fassbender, Danny McBride, Demián Bichir (The Hateful Eight), Jussie Smolett (Empire), Amy Seimetz (Upstream Color), Carmen Ejogo (Selma), Callie Hernandez (Machete Kills), and Billy Crudup (Watchmen).

Alien: Covenant is set to be released on August 4th, 2017.

Wonderfully Heartwarming Animated Short Film PEARL from the Director of Disney's FEAST

"It's not where you're from, but where you belong…"

I've got an incredible, must-watch animated short for you to watch today called "Pearl." The movie was directed by Patrick Osborn, who brought us the adorable Disney animated dog short "Feast." This latest story focuses on the relationship of a father and daughter and the time they spent together through the years. The whole story is told within the interior of a hatchback car and set to a wonderfully written song. This is also 360 degree interactive short, so while you watch it you can use your cursor to move around your point of view.

Being a father of three girls, this story really hit home, and by the end of the short, I was fighting to hold back the tears. This is such a beautiful film that tells an amazing, heartwarming story. As much as I enjoyed "Feast," "Pearl" is a much better and more powerful film

Set inside their home, a beloved hatchback, Pearl follows a girl and her dad as they crisscross the country chasing their dreams. It’s a story about the gifts we hand down and their power to carry love. And finding grace in the unlikeliest of places.

I hope you enjoy this...

Lionsgate May Produce Up To Seven More POWER RANGERS Movies

$

Lionsgate has some big plans for their Power Rangers film franchise. The first film in the franchise relaunch isn't set to be released until next year, but the studio is very excited about its potential. During a recent conference call with analysts, Lionsgate CEO Jon Feltheimer revealed that they may make up to seven Power Rangers movies. This is his exact quote:

“We are really, really excited about the ‘Power Rangers’ movie. We could see doing five or six or seven.”

Everything that has been released for the film so far has been met with a lot of positivty from fans. A couple of the main things that have been revealed include the first photo of Elizabeth Banks as Rita Repulsa and our first look at the Power Rangers costume designs. The studio knows fans are digging it, and they obviously think they have a huge franchise hit on their hands. If it turns out as successful as they think it will... of course they are going to make more movies! That's just what movie studios do these days.

Dean Israelite is currently directing the film, and the Power Rangers team is comprised of actors Dacre Montgomery (A Few Less Men) as Jason the Red Ranger, RJ Cyler (Me and Earl and the Dying Girl) as Billy the Blue Ranger, Naomi Scott (The 33) as Kimberly the Pink Ranger, Becky G (Empire) as Trini the Yellow Ranger, and Ludi Lin (Monster Hunt) as Zack the Black Ranger.

I'm kind of excited to see how this turns out! Here's the official synopsis:

Saban’s Power Rangers follows five ordinary high school kids who must become something extraordinary when they learn that their small town of Angel Grove – and the world – is on the verge of being obliterated by an alien threat. Chosen by destiny, our heroes quickly discover that they are the only ones who can save the planet. But to do so they will have to overcome their real-life issues and band together as the Power Rangers before it is too late.

Power Rangers is currently in production, and it hits theaters on March 24th, 2017.

Jurassic Park and Independence Day star Jeff Goldblum plays jazz piano, and when he's in Los Angeles, he takes to the stage at a local Los Feliz bar and performs with a live band. Last night, he launched a campaign for the upcoming Independence Day: Resurgence with the awesome people at Omaze (raising money for Conservation International) by live-streaming his show on Facebook Live, including musical performances, quizzes, games, and more. I'm only about half an hour into watching it right now, but Goldblum is charismatic as hell (obviously), and I can't imagine seeing anything more entertaining all day.

Independence Day: Resurgence is in theaters on June 24, 2016.
