Kevin Feige Explains Jon Favreau’s Influence on How Marvel Makes Their Movies

$

Marvel released their first independently made film in 2008 with Iron Man. Jon Favreau directed the film, and as you know it ended up being a big success. At the time, Marvel had no idea if it would succeed or fail. Luckily for fans, it turned out awesome, and it’s crazy to see how far the MCU has come since then. I would have never imagined then what we are seeing from Marvel now. It’s incredible! We can thank Favreau for that. If it weren’t for him, who knows where Marvel would be. The guy not only set the whole tone for the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but he also set the tone for how Marvel would continue to make their movies.

In an interview with /Film, Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige reflected back on Iron man and talked about what Favreau did for them. He said:

“Every lesson. I learned every lesson [on that movie]. I mean, that was our first movie. I have been at Marvel at 16 years now. In the first six or seven years, we were working on our films that other studios had the rights for, that other studios paid for, and that other studios had all the control over. There were a lot of great learning experiences there. There were some awesome movies in that run, and there were some movies I felt could’ve been better in that run. But we learned all sorts of lessons along the way. When we finally got to do it ourselves, it was time to put up or shut up. It was saying, ‘Everything we believe could be done with our characters, let’s put into this movie.’ If it hadn’t worked, we would’ve thought, ‘Oh, I guess our ideas maybe aren’t the right ones.’ [Laughs.] Jon helped lead the charge on that. There are a lot of the things we continue to do at the studio that Jon helped initiate. Really, it comes down to collaboration. Jon was a spectacular collaborator. Instead of just looking at designs by himself, he’d say, “Come on, everybody, let’s go in a room, put up the designs, and all talk about them.” He did his early cuts on the movie and we started submitted notes, and he said, ‘Ah, I don’t want to get all this paper. Just come in here and let’s talk about it.’ That’s how we make movies now.”

One of the other major contributions Favreau made was casting Robert Downey Jr. in the role of Tony Stark. It's crazy that he had to fight for that inspired casting. Casting Downey Jr. as Stark is one of the best decisions Marvel has made.

Both Marvel and Favreau have evolved since they last worked together, but I would love to see Favreau come back to direct another Marvel movie at some point. I don’t think that’s going to happen anytime soon, if ever, but it would be great if it did.

WOLVERINE 3 Will Be Set in the Future

With Wolverine 3 being Hugh Jackman's last time playing the character, this has got to be the best movie yet. I have no doubt they are going to pull out all the stops and give fans the greatest Wolverine film possible.

We now have a new bit of info on the film for you. While talking to CinemaBlend, producer Simon Kinberg revealed the filling information:

"The Wolverine movie takes place in the future.”

This seems to fit the rumors that the story will be inspired by the Old Man Logan comic story arc. That story takes place in a dystopian future where villains have taken over society, and Mysterio messes with Wolverine and he ends up killing the X-Men.

Also, the fact that Patrick Stewart will be reprising his role as Professor X indicates that the film will take place further along in the X-Men timeline than we've seen in the previous films. In case you're not finally with the Old Man Logan story arc, here's the description:

Nobody knows what happened on the night the heroes fell. All we know is that they disappeared and evil triumphed and the bad guys have been calling the shots ever since. What happened to Wolverine is the biggest mystery of all. For 50 years, no one has heard hide nor hair from him...and in his place stands anold man called Logan. A man concerned only about his family. A man pushed to the brink by the HULK GANG. A man forced to help an old friend--the blind archer, HAWKEYE--drive three thousand miles to secure his family's safety. Get ready for the ride of your life, Logan.

Professor X doesn't have a big role in the Old Man Logan storyline in the comic, so things are obviously going to be retooled for it. I believe that he will be taking on the role that Hawkeye had in the comic story.

Boyd Holbrook was recently cast as the villain in the James Mangold-directed movie, which is set to be released on March 23rd, 2017.

Marvel’s Use of 3D in DOCTOR STRANGE Film Will Bend People's Minds

Last night the first trailer for director Scott Derrickson’s Doctor Strange was released, and it was amazing to see footage from a film that I've been waiting so long to see. After watching the trailer a few times it looks better than I could have hoped, and I'm excited to see more.

Now, even though Marvel has released most of their films in 3D, they aren’t really pushing the envelope on them. They’ve been doing it just to do it so that Disney can get that extra cash in their pocket. It sounds like Doctor Strange might actually be using the 3D to help immerse audiences in the world of the Sorcerer Supreme and serve the story that the film will tell.

During an interview with Collider, Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige spoke about using 3D to bring the magical world of Doctor Strange to life.

"Yes, as a matter of fact. We were in VFX reviews the other day, one of the first ones for that movie — we just wrapped, we finished in New York… we did one of the first reviews and it was pretty exciting. It was pretty cool in terms of how 3D can serve that story. You know, sometimes 3D is a tool, like it is in Civil War, a tool of – another toy in the sandbox of how the Russos (Joe and Anthony) can present this movie, then there are times like what Disney is putting out with The Jungle Book – it’s certainly gonna be the case with Doctor Strange – that it serves the storytelling, that it advances the storytelling. And hopefully, it helps bend people’s minds even more than with just the flat screen."

After seeing the trailer, is easy to imagine that Doctor Strange would be incredibly fun to play with in the third dimension. There are a lot of possibilities for the filmmaking team to get creative with this property, and I can see it naturally work with 3D. Seeing a Marvel film in 3D has never made the movie any better for me, but that could change with Doctor Strange if the 3D effect is properly used, and it sounds like they know what they want to do with it.

Doctor Strange opens in theaters on November 4th.

The Next UNDERWORLD Sequel Is Called UNDERWORLD: BLOOD WARS

Screen Gems has announced that the fifth installment of the Underworld franchise will be titled Underworld: Blood Wars. Kate Beckinsale is set to reprise her role as Selene in the dark new adventure, and there's no doubt that it's going to kick some ass because all the Underworld films have kicked ass.

Oh yeah, I also already got to see some footage from the film at CinemaCon! If you've enjoyed the prior Underworld movies, then this one is going to be a real treat. The footage we were shown was loaded with action and Selene is preparing for a new war. She sets out on a journey to find a special blood which will make her invincible.

The movie is being directed by Anna Foerster, who is a talented cinematographer and director of TV series such as Criminal Minds and Outlander. Some of her cinematography film work includes  Independence Day, The Day After Tomorrow and White House Down.

Here are some additional details on the cast and some of the new characters that we'll see in movie.

Theo James (The Divergent Series) returns as Selene’s ally David, reprising the role he played in Underworld: Awakening. British actors Tobias Menzies (“Outlander”, “Rome”) and Lara Pulver (“Sherlock”) take on the respective roles of a formidable new Lycan leader and a fiercely ambitious Vampire, and Charles Dance (“Game of Thrones”) again plays Vampire elder Thomas. Rounding out the film’s stellar international cast are: James Faulkner (“Game of Thrones”), Peter Andersson (The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo), newcomer Clementine Nicholson, Bradley James (A&E’s upcoming “Damien”) and Daisy Head (the upcoming Fallen).

Underworld: Blood Wars is scheduled to open in theaters on October 14th, 2016.

Elton John is in Talks to Join KINGSMAN: THE GOLDEN CIRCLE

It looks like director Matthew Vaughn might nab legendary rock star Elton John for his upcoming sequel Kingsman: The Golden Circle. I would have never thought I’d see Elton John in a hardcore badass action franchise, but there’s a strong possibility it could happen as the musician is currently in talks to join the project.

If they can strike a deal, John will join the previously-cast Taron Egerton, Mark Strong, Julianne Moore, Halle Berry, Pedro Pascal, and judging by the first teaser poster we saw for the film, Colin Firth will be coming back to join the party as well.

There’s no word on who exactly John will be playing in the movie, but THR suggests that he could be playing himself. The sequel will continue of the adventures of Eggsy and it takes the action from the Kingsman group to the Statesmen, which is the U.K. organization's U.S. equivalent.

Kingsman: The Golden Circle is set to start shooting in London soon from a script Vaughn co-wrote with frequent collaborator Jane Goldman. The movie hits theaters on June 16, 2017.

We're going to be returning to the Harry Potter cinematic universe very soon with Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, but first, Mashable takes us back to Hogwarts with this fake trailer that takes footage from the Potter franchise and cuts it into the style of the John Hughes classic The Breakfast Club.

This may be the first time anyone has referred to Harry as a jock.

It’s true that Suicide Squad, Captain America: Civil War and X-Men: Apocalypse have been the hot topics for the last couple of weeks. Still, whenever something Deadpool-related shows up, it manages to jump right on the front line with sexiness and seduction. And when that doesn’t work out, well then, he has his guns to help him make the rest sit in the back row.

While we eagerly await the release of the movie’s Blu-ray and DVD, MTV decided to give us an extended version of the movie's montage, treated with a never-seen-before footage. So what we’ve got here? A catchy “Deadpool Rap” song, Ryan Reynolds’ Wade Wilson character suiting up and honing his superhero skills, some guys who are taught a lesson about life (and the lack of life, too), and plenty of situations which get a bit too messy.

Will Smith Wants To Play Batman and Has a Plan For Making It Happen

$

MTV News caught up with Will Smith at the MTV Movie Awards the other night (a feat that shouldn't have been too difficult, considering, you know, they were hosting it), and they asked the erstwhile Fresh Prince if he was looking forward to reprising his Suicide Squad role of Deadshot in either a solo movie or a Batman movie, and Smith had an interesting answer: he said he wanted Deadshot to actually become Batman.

At one point Smith mentions that in the comics, Deadshot steps into the role of Batman when Bruce Wayne gets injured, but I'm not sure exactly which comic he's referring to. It's been a while since I've picked up a Batman comic, so maybe fans can illuminate this in the comments, but he might be talking about either Deadshot's first appearance (when the character tries to beat out Batman for the favor of Gotham City) or Batman: Bad Blood, in which Dick Grayson takes over for Batman when Wayne goes missing.

Either way, it's an idea that I can absolutely see WB/DC incorporating into a movie somewhere down the line in an effort to keep crossing over those two individual franchises. We already know that Batman has more than just a tiny cameo in Suicide Squad, so it wouldn't be crazy to think those characters could show up in his solo movie (or beyond). What do you think?

Suicide Squad blasts into theaters on August 5th.

Vulture Will Reportedly Be One of The Villains in SPIDER-MAN: HOMECOMING

Yesterday at CinemaCon, Sony officially announced Spider-Man: Homecoming as the title of its new Spider-Man solo film that's a co-production with Marvel Studios, and now it appears that we know at least one of the villains who will show up in that film.

Birth.Movies.Death spoke with a source and found out that as of now, the Vulture will appear in the film as a villain. Previous rumors indicated that the character wouldn't be the movie's main bad guy, but the site is unsure about the validity of those whispers at this point. So basically all we know is that the Vulture is going to be in it — we're not sure about the age of the character (he's traditionally been pretty old in the comics) or who's playing him (John Malkovich was supposed to play him in Sam Raimi's Spider-Man 4 before that fell apart).

The Vulture, for those who don't know, is Adrian Toomes, an engineer who creates an electromagnetic harness that allows the wearer to fly like a bird. But when his business partner steals his share of the company, he's driven mad and creates the Vulture identity to enact his revenge. He later becomes a part of the Sinister Six. It should be interesting to see if they cast an older man in this role, or if they go with someone younger to be closer to new Spidey Tom Holland's age.

Spider-Man: Homecoming will hit theaters on July 7, 2017.

Brooklyn Man Sets New World Record For TV Binge-Watching

Here's something that might make you feel a little less guilty about those weekend binge-watching sessions every time Netflix releases a new season of a show. Variety reports that a 25-year-old Brooklyn resident has set a new Guinness World Record for TV binge-watching, clocking in at a staggering 94 hours.

Over the course of five days, Alejandro “AJ” Fragoso watched back-to-back episodes of shows including “Game of Thrones,” “Curb Your Enthusiasm,” “Battlestar Galactica,” “Twilight Zone,” “Bob’s Burgers” and “Adventure Time” in a stunt sponsored by multimedia software company CyberLink. The viewing event, held at a midtown Manhattan apartment, began Friday, April 8, and the 94-hour mark was passed Tuesday just after 5 a.m. Eastern.

Apparently it started out as a group of three people trying to break the record, but Fragoso was the only one to make it to the end. He beat the previous world record by two hours, which was only set last month when a group of five Austrians watched TV for 92 hours straight. How pissed off would you be if you were those people? Holding the world record for about a month before someone came along and beat you?

This is my favorite part, though. Fragoso called the process "quite physically taxing," and the data bears that out:

After his epic binge, Fragoso had an elevated heart rate and suffered neurological side effects, including an increased frequency of involuntary open-eyed micronaps and acute hallucinations, according to the company.

I think we've all probably been tired enough at one point or another to experience open-eyed micronaps, but acute hallucinations? That's intense!

23 JUMP STREET and MEN IN BLACK Crossover Film Gets an Official Title

Obviously the Spider-Man reboot wasn’t the only upcoming production that nabbed a title at the Sony Pictures presentation during CinemaCon in Las Vegas. The long-talked-about Men in Black and Jump Street crossover was another winner that received its official name: MIB 23. So plans are moving forward.

Information about the movie was first leaked in 2014 after the massive Sony hack. The leaked emails revealed that Channing Tatum and Jonah Hill would return for another Jump Street film, but this time with a Men in Black flavor. However, MIB stars Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones won’t reprise their roles in the crossover and we won’t get to see Agent Jay and Agent Kay.

On top of finally getting a title (and proof that the film is actually happening), MIB 23 showed off with a logo as well.

Producers Phil Lord and Chris Miller have already rolled up their sleeves, while James Bobin (The Muppets) is expected to jump on board as director of the crossover. Other details about the action-comedy crossover are still unknown.

The Original STAR WARS Trilogy is Coming Back to Theaters This Year

As if you needed another reason to love the Alamo Drafthouse, the theater chain/distribution company is bringing the original Star Wars trilogy back to the big screen this summer. All of the details are still being worked out, but the trilogy will be available to watch as a triple feature in over 20 cities throughout the month of August.

This is definitely exciting news for fans, but it's not quite legendary: the movies will be presented in their 1997 re-release formats. I doubt that George Lucas will ever let anyone project the REAL original trilogy ever again — at least while he's alive — so this is going to be as close as it gets. That '97 re-release was the first time I had the opportunity to see the movies on the big screen, and now a whole new generation will have that chance as well.

More than just an epic triple-feature, each "Return of the Trilogy" show will be in its own unique celebratory event, featuring specially curated video content before and between films, contests, props to bring the power of the Force to life, and other special surprises. And coming dressed as your favorite Jedi, scoundrel pilot, or rebel scum will be very much encouraged.

Here are the dates that have been confirmed as of this writing:

Stan Lee Chooses Between Team Cap or Team Iron Man

The marketing for Captain America: Civil War has done a good job of dividing fandom between Team Cap and Team Iron Man, but which side does comics legend Stan Lee support?

According to ComicBook.com, Lee was asked that very question on the red carpet before the world premiere of Civil War, and Lee dramatically took out a coin, flipped it, and said: "Captain America," and adding, "No doubt about it!"

When asked why he prefers Cap over Iron Man, he cracked, "Because Chris Evans is about half an inch taller than Robert Downey Jr. That’s as good a reason as any, if you have to have a reason!"

But of course, he wouldn't actually commit to either side, probably because he never wants to alienate fans who hold a different opinion. "I don’t care, I love them both, they’re both going to look real good on screen, and the audience is going to have a tough time deciding. I love them both." It's OK if you actually choose one, Stan. If someone actually cares enough to get incensed about it, they'll forget in a day and move on to the next thing to get outraged about.

Civil War hits theaters on May 6th.

THE ANGRY BIRDS MOVIE: The Birds Go On The Offensive in New Trailer

The latest trailer for The Angry Birds Movie doesn't contain very much new footage, so my opinion of it hasn't changed very much since the last trailer finally made me understand why the film exists. The biggest revelation for me was in the credits at the very end: I knew that Jason Sudeikis, Bill Hader, Maya Rudolph, and Patton Oswalt were in the film, but Sean Penn? I had no clue he was in this! I must have completely missed that announcement. (So did his IMDb page, apparently.)

The Angry Birds Movie hits theaters on May 20th.

In the 3D animated comedy, The Angry Birds Movie, we'll finally find out why the birds are so angry.

The movie takes us to an island populated entirely by happy, flightless birds – or almost entirely. In this paradise, Red (Jason Sudeikis, We're the Millers, Horrible Bosses), a bird with a temper problem, speedy Chuck (Josh Gad in his first animated role since Frozen), and the volatile Bomb (Danny McBride, This is the End, Eastbound and Down) have always been outsiders. But when the island is visited by mysterious green piggies, it’s up to these unlikely outcasts to figure out what the pigs are up to.

Featuring a hilarious, all-star voice cast that includes Maya Rudolph (Bridesmaids, Sisters), Bill Hader (Trainwreck, Inside Out), and Peter Dinklage (Game of Thrones), as well as Keegan-Michael Key (Key & Peele), Kate McKinnon (Saturday Night Live, Ghostbusters), Tony Hale (Veep, Arrested Development), Hannibal Buress (Daddy’s Home, Broad City), Ike Barinholtz (Neighbors, Sisters), Tituss Burgess (Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt), Jillian Bell (22 Jump Street), Danielle Brooks (Orange is the New Black), Latin music sensation Romeo Santos, YouTube stars Smosh (Ian Hecox and Anthony Padilla), and country music superstar Blake Shelton, who co-writes and performs the original song “Friends,” the Columbia Pictures/Rovio Entertainment film is directed by Fergal Reilly and Clay Kaytis and produced by John Cohen and Catherine Winder. The screenplay is by Jon Vitti, from a story by Mikael Hed & Mikko Pöllä & John Cohen and the film is executive produced by Mikael Hed and David Maisel.

Honest Trailer For Disney's Animated Classic THE JUNGLE BOOK

Jon Favreau's adaptation of The Jungle Book hits theaters this Friday. Joey's already seen it (he loved it), and I was blown away by some early footage a little while back. One thing I wasn't blown away by, though, was the original 1967 Disney animated movie. I went back and rewatched it a few weeks ago to refresh myself for the new film, and it has to be one of the most boring films to ever come out of the studio's animation department.

The people at Screen Junkies agree, and as you can see in their latest Honest Trailer, they lay into this one pretty hard.

Before you catch another live-action remake of a Disney classic, get ready for the classic animated film, featuring the song you know and love and....not much else.

John Krasinski in Talks to Join J.J. Abrams' GOD PARTICLE

Variety reports that John Krasinski may join David Oyelowo and Gugu Mbatha-Raw in God Particle, a sci-fi thriller that will be directed by Julius Onah. J.J. Abrams is producing.

Set in the near future, God Particle “centers on a team of astronauts who make a terrifying discovery that challenges everything they know about the fabric of reality, as they desperately fight for survival.”

The project has been in development for a long time, but it finally has a scheduled release date, February 24, 2017, and production is set to begin in the next few months.

We all loved Krasinski in The Office, but his movie career has been more miss than hit. Looking at his credits, he has only been in one or two movies that I've liked, and those have been supporting roles. However, he is currently on stage in Dry Powder at The Public Theater, and the production is garnering stellar reviews. Hopefully if he decides to sign onto this one he’ll knock it out of the park.

I Hate Everything is a Youtube personality most known for his distaste for things that people typically like. His videos are typically long and argue against the things we say to defend our favorite things. While I think he made a mistake starting this argument out on Batman v Superman (which will instantly cause some to turn it off and go straight to the comments), he makes some very valid points about the way superhero films are now made.

He even takes aim at the holy grail of superhero films, The Avengers! I don't agree with all of it, but he makes some pretty damn good points. Check it out below.
