Chris Hardwick Defends THE WALKING DEAD Season 6 Finale - “It’s Not Poor Writing, It’s Exceptional Storytelling”

It’s not surprising that Chris Hardwick, the host of The Talking Dead, is going to defend The Walking Dead season finale that so many other fans were frustrated with. Hardwick is freakin’ hilarious, and I enjoy what he does, but he does get a paycheck from AMC to host the show, so it’s not like he’s ever going to say anything bad about it. After the show, the comedian did a Live Q&A in which he passionately talks about how the sixth season ended and one of the main points he repeatedly makes is, “It’s not poor writing, it’s exceptional storytelling.”

"The cliffhanger was not poor writing. Here's what I would say. Just because you don't see the purpose doesn't mean it doesn't serve a purpose. I think people need to stop projecting that onto, it's not poor writing, it's exceptional storytelling because you're going to be talking about this for seven months and if you had seen who it was, how would that have changed things?"

I agree and disagree with that comment. I’ve never heard anyone say that it’s “poor writing.” The Walking Dead has always had great writing and exceptional storytelling, expect for this big brain fart that they had. It was a poor decision not to reveal who died, though. The emotional weight of that scene was wasted with no solid payoff. Everything was building up to that scene and then nothing. I’ve heard people say that it’s all about Rick losing control, but if that were the case the camera would have focused on him and his reaction as one of his friends was being beaten to death. Instead, they went with the POV shot, which was fine. They just needed to show the aftermath of it. Not only who died but also a horrified look on Rick’s face. I’m sure people would be talking that for the next seven months as well. Hardwick goes on to say:

“I would say the same thing if it, let me give you a perfect example. Love the first few seasons of American Horror Story, but I felt like they kind of started weenie-ing out at the end because they never really explained anything in the end. The Asylum season I thought was incredible. So well acted, so many great storylines, but in the end, they were just like (shrugs) 'I don't know.' If this were a series finale, then you might have a gripe, but you cannot say what has happened on this half of the season is poor writing. That is fucking asinine to say that.”

Again, it’s not poor writing. It’s poor decision making. He continues on with the “poor writing” aspect of his rant in the following comment:

"For this show to have these kinds of storylines and this kind of character development and this kind of drama this far into a series where they still give a shit is epic. It is not poor writing, it is the fucking opposite of poor writing and I will defend this show until I'm blue in the fucking face and my eyes are crying tears of blood. This is exceptional writing. You don't have to like it, of course, everyone is entitled to their opinion but you cannot make a statement that's some kind of attempt at an objective universal statement that the show is, I mean that's just crazy. It's your opinion, it's not poor writing."

I respect Hardwick’s opinion. But what the showrunners did was a gimmick that pissed a lot of fans off. What do you think about what Hardwick had to say?

Here’s a perfectly fun cosplay mashup created by Chad Hill and Castle Corsetry that combines Xena with Disney. The result is Xena: Disney Warrior Princess. It's being cosplayed by Bernadette Bentley, and it’s simply fantastic. The photo was taken by York In A Box. I’d love to see someone take this concept and turn it into an action-packed animated short.

Apocalypse (Oscar Isaac), the first and most powerful mutant from Marvel’s X-Men universe, amassed the powers of many other mutants, becoming immortal and invincible. As the fate of the Earth hangs in the balance, Raven (Jennifer Lawrence) with the help of Professor X (James McAvoy) must lead a team of young X-Men to stop their greatest nemesis and save mankind from complete destruction.

Now that you’ve had a day to watch the Star Wars: Rogue One trailer over and over again and let the awesomeness completely soak in, we have a video from Mr. Sunday Movies that break down the trailer. The video dives a bit deeper into the trailer and gives us ten things we may have missed including Easter eggs, references, and a few other things. I enjoy this guy’s videos because he makes them energetic and entertaining. The video came along with the following note:

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story trailer 1 is here! Check out all the Easter Eggs, References, Things Missed, as well as a closer look at who is the mysterious character in the cloak may in fact be.
As well as that there’s more details on whom Felicity Jones’ character is and what she’ll be doing as well as the characters played Diego Luna, Ben Mendelsohn, Donnie Yenn, Jiang Wen and Forest Witaker
There’s also a whole lot of Easter Eggs, References, and Nods towards the orginal saga! We get the appearance of the first Death Star, the Rebl Base Yavin 4, AT-AT’s, new and old Stormtroopers alike, Mon Mothma plus probably other things I dunno.
Also we may even have an appearance from The Emperor himself with the inclusion of the Imperial Royal Guards. Could he be floating around in that big Bacta tank looking thing in a pair of white briefs? We can only hope. What a fun time that’ll be. Thanks for watching!

After you watch the video let us know if there's anything else you might have caught in the trailer that fans might have missed.

The Heroines of CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR Kick Ass in New Featurette

Marvel has released a new featurette for Captain America: Civil War. It’s called “In Good Company,” and it focuses on the heroines of the story. It also features new footage of Scarlett Johansson as Black Widow, Elizabeth Olsen as Scarlet Witch, and Emily VanCamp as Agent 13. The actresses also discuss their characters in the film. When talking about Black Widow and where her loyalties lie, Johansson says:

“Natasha is a bit torn between either side. With Cap, they really have a relationship where she wants to reason with him, but she sees Tony as a path of least resistance.”

As for Agent 13, Van Camp says she’s a little more sassy and gets in on some action, and when talking about Scarlet Witch, Olsen say that she’s terrified of her own abilities. I’m really excited that we are going to get to see these continue to grow in the MCU… if they don’t die by the end of this one!

Captain America: Civil War is set to be released on May 6th!

Intense First Clip From GAME OF THRONES Season 6

The sixth season of Game of Thrones can't get here soon enough! It seems like it's been forever since the season five finale. While we wait for the season six premiere later this month, we have the first clip from it for you to watch today! It premiered on Conan last night when Game of Thrones actor Liam Cunningham came in as a guest to talk about the show. I won't go into detail about what it is in case you want to skip it, but it does offer a little tease of what happens next at Castle Black. One thing is for sure, it definitely leaves with wanting more!

HBO has officially revealed that the title for the first episode is called “The Red Woman,” and it's described as follows:

“Jon Snow is dead. Daenerys meets a strong man. Cersei sees her daughter again.”

The episode was written by executive producers David Benioff and D. B. Weiss and directed by Jeremy Podeswa. It's set to premiere on April 24th. You can watch the full interview below, and if you just want to skip to the clip, it starts at the 1:47 mark.

Hope That One Day You Share the Love Indian Superman and Spider-woman Share

First off, let me set the record straight, I do not think this is an actual superhero film. While Bollywood has been known to blatantly infringe on American copyrighted franchises, I doubt even they would base an entire film on a romance between Superman and Spider-Woman! From what I can gather, this is a clip from a romance film (possibly a music video), but that doesn't make it any less hilarious and over the top!

Crazy as it may be, I hope one day I can fight crime and execute perfect choreographed dance moves with my beloved. Don't we all?

8 New Character Posters for Duncan Jones’ WARCRAFT and More

I’m really excited about Warcraft, but I really haven’t been a big fan of the marketing behind the film. It’s like they don’t know how to sell this movie to audiences. Director Duncan Jones hasn’t been very happy with the marketing either. I’ve shared a few tweets with his thoughts at the end of the post.

Today we bring you eight character posters for the film showing off Blackhand the Destroyer, Lady Taria the Queen, Orgrim the Defiant, Llane the King, Gerona the Survivor, Lothar the Warrior, Durotan the Rebel, and Gul’dan the Invader.

So far there’s a lot of mixed reception from people. Some people think it looks awesome (like me), and a lot of people that I’ve talked to think it looks like crap. I honestly don’t get that. I’m hoping the film blows audiences away and puts an end to the video game movie curse.

I’ve also included some fan-made promos for you to check out that are much better than some of the stuff the studio has released.

Warcraft arrives in theaters on June 10th, 2016.

Batman and Superman Settle Their Dispute in Other Ways

Batman and Superman meet for the first time and immediately are on the verge of coming to blows. You would imagine two guys regularly forced to show restraint would have a little better conflict resolution! Dorkly imagined an alternate reality where the two talked it out a little more before learning their mothers share the same name.

For the record, I think Batman would be pretty good at chess in real life.

ARROW Showrunner Explains This Week's Shocking Ending

**If you read this article and then complain about spoilers, you have failed this website and everyone who reads it.**

We (supposedly) now know who is in the grave this season of Arrow. Laurel Lance was taken out by Damian Darhk, had successful surgery, then had a seizure and died in front of all her friends. With all the times Arrow has faked a character's death before, I refuse to believe it, but for the sake of this article, I'll play along.

Showrunner Marc Guggenheim tells Comicbook the decision has nothing to do with Olicity and everything to do with believing that death would resonate most with audiences...

"Obviously Arrow is always a show that's evolving, it's always a show where you know, every character arguably except for the Arrow is fair game...And you know we started off this year with the promise of a death, and when we sort of worked our way through our various different creative choices, we realized that you know, the thing that will give us the most pop going into the end of the season and into next season unfortunately would be Laurel, and we knew by the way, we knew that it would enrage a lot of people."

Hey, no love lost here. I always thought it was a slap in the face that she was such a competent hero after six weeks of boxing classes. As far as the Olicity thing and Laurel getting in the way, I don't think that's why they did it either. Truthfully, I think the Arrow writers knew this was a make or break season for many fans who already have enough hero shows to watch and are looking to drop one. What better way to get people talking than a high profile death?!

My only hope is that they continue to acknowledge Laurel's death in future episodes, as they certainly haven't with Moira Queen or Tommy Merlyn! We'll see if the death sticks or if it leads to a memorable finale.

4 Years Worth of Emails I've Received from People I've Helped Turn Super Saiyan

Four years ago I saw a funny video in which a kid attempted to go Super Saiyan....

After watching an event of such magnitude, I was inspired. I penned a post that continues to amuse/haunt me to this day. My 7 Step Guide To Becoming Super Saiyan has become a low-key viral success to obsessive fans of Dragon Ball Z and has helped many ascend to power levels over 9000. The following slideshow is every email I've received over the past four years regarding my guide. Some are serious, some are trolling, and almost all are pretty damn funny. Enjoy.

Side note: If this is some subtle practical joke being pulled on me by the GT team, I'm gonna go SS2 and Instant Transmit my foot up a butt.

Doug Liman Is Back to Direct EDGE OF TOMORROW Sequel; New Writers Hired

$

Last year we learned that Tom Cruise had an idea for an Edge of Tomorrow sequel that he pitched to director Doug Liman and writer Christopher McQuarrie. That idea was later locked and loaded and pitched to Warner Brothers, and now the studio is taking it to the next step and putting it in development.

According to Deadline, Warner Bros. has hired Joe Shrapnel and Anna Waterhouse to write the script. They are the screenwriters behind the Jesse Owens biopic Race, which I really enjoyed. The report it said that McQuarrie would be directing the film, but the writer later took to Twitter to say that news is wrong and that Liman would be back to direct the film.

Edge of Tomorrow was a great film that not only received critical acclaim but also did well at the box office. Cruise is obviously set to reprise his role, and Emily Blunt is expected to come back and kick some more ass. I absolutely loved her in this movie!

The movie ended in a way that didn't really need a sequel, but they obviously have an idea that they are all excited about. This is a very talented team of people developing this sequel, and I can't wait to see what they have come up with and how they will continue the story of these characters in this world. For those of you who don't think think a sequel should be made, McQuarrie previously had this to say:

"Right away, there were people on social media saying, 'Don’t do it, it should never have a sequel, etc., etc.' And I’m just laughing because I’m like, 'You guys don’t even know what we are talking about! You have no idea!' Look, that was one of the best creative teams I’ve ever worked with as far as a team of rivals: Emily is one facet of that; Doug Liman is a completely different and opposing force; Tom Cruise is another. And there I am in the middle, just playing to these three really strong, really smart people."

I don't think these guys would make a sequel if they didn't have a great idea that would make fans happy. It's not like they need to make it; they are always working on projects. So the fact that they are getting back together for another film says something.

Slick-Looking Officially Licensed Marvel Motorcycle Helmets

For those of you motorcycle enthusiasts out there looking to geek up your motorcycle gear with some Marvel fandom, helmet manufacturer HJC Helmets has the perfect collection of helmets. These officially licensed Marvel helmets were inspired by Iron Man, Captain America, and The Punisher.

They will hit stores in May, and the Cap and Punisher helmets will cost you $174.99. The Iron Man helmet is a bit pricier and comes in at $249.99. The reason that one is more expensive is because it includes a special Face Shield with a one-touch SunShield included.

If I had a motorcycle I'd buy the whole collection in a heartbeat.

Marvel's CLOAK AND DAGGER Series Gets an Official Synopsis

$

0

Yesterday we learned that Marvel was developing a new TV series based on the comic Cloak and Dagger. The series is coming to Freeform, which was previously known as ABC Family. This news got fans of the property incredibly excited, and they should be! This is a great comic with great characters and it has the potential to be a great series...if it's done right.

The network has since released the following official synopsis for their adaptation:

This exciting new series is an adaptation of the beloved Marvel characters aimed squarely at young adults. This live-action interracial romance follows Tandy Bowen and Tyrone Johnson, two teenagers from very different backgrounds, who find themselves burdened and awakened to newly acquired superpowers while falling in love. Tandy can emit light daggers and Tyrone has the ability to engulf others in darkness. They quickly learn they are better together than apart—but their feelings for each other make their already complicated world even more challenging.
The series will mark a third network for Marvel TV live-action properties, with Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. and others on ABC, Daredevil and more on Netflix, and now Freeform taking on Cloak and Dagger.

The show currently has no release date, stars attached, writers, or even a showrunner, but at least they know what they want out of it. I hope it doesn't turn out to be a cheesy, young adult-type show because it sounds like it could be, which would confirm the fears of some fans. I just hope it really dives into who these characters are and they find a nice balance of drama, humor, and awesomeness like The Flash and Supergirl

GAME OF THRONES Star Pedro Pascal Steps Into KINGSMAN: THE GOLDEN CIRCLE

$

0

Just yesterday, we wrote about how Kingsman: The Golden Circle teased the surprise return of a character thought dead in the first movie, and now the film has added a new champion in former Game of Thrones star Pedro Pascal.

Deadline reports that Pascal will play a character with the amusing name of Jack Daniels, though no further details are known. I'm not sure if he's going to be on Eggsy's (Taron Egerton) side or that of Julianne Moore (the movie's reported new villain), but maybe he'll be working alongside Halle Berry's head of the CIA.

(Spoiler alert for Game of Thrones ahead.)

After having his character's head completely obliterated by The Mountain on Game of Thrones, Pascal moved on to star in the first season of the Netflix series Narcos (which is still on my list of things I need to watch). Matthew Vaughn returns to direct, and Kingsman: The Golden Circle hits theaters on June 16, 2017.

Benicio Del Toro To Star in Cuban Mafia Thriller THE CORPORATION

$
0
0

Along with Sicario 2, Star Wars: Episode VIII, and presumably another appearance in the Marvel Cinematic Universe at some point, Benicio Del Toro has landed another major role. The Wrap reports that Paramount Pictures won a bidding war last night for the rights to T.J. English's upcoming nonfiction book The Corporation — beating out Warner Bros., Universal, Sony, MGM, and Skydance — and Del Toro will play the lead role in a story about the Cuban mafia.

The book centers on the Corporation’s founder, Jose Miguel Battle Sr., who died in 2007. Known as ‘El Padrino’ and ‘the Godfather,’ he was Fulgencio Batista’s bag man, bringing the Cuban dictator his cut from the gambling casinos when the Mafia ran Cuba. Battle escaped to the States, where he and other Cubans were trained by the CIA to invade the country in the ill-fated Bay of Pigs invasion.
Having saved the lives of 28 of his men, the Godfather came out of that debacle as a certified hero to many Cuban-Americans. The core of the gang was trained as a unit and together formed the Corporation. They started out running the popular numbers racket, known as “bolita,” but soon moved on to money laundering and murder.

As often happens in true stories like these, a die-hard detective incessantly tracked the group for fifteen years and eventually brought them down. Sounds like the basis for a cool movie. Leonardo DiCaprio and his Appian Way production company will produce, while David Matthew (Vinyl) will write the screenplay. No director or start date have been announced yet, but we'll keep you posted.

Whatever You Do, Don't Watch This GREEN ROOM Red-Band Trailer

$

0

Jeremy Saulnier's Green Room is a brutal, tightly-paced thriller that's been making waves on the festival circuit and hits theaters next week. (I'll have a review for you then, but you can read Joey's out of Sundance right here.) But if you're interested in seeing the film, I implore you NOT to watch the brand-new red-band trailer that was just released.

I understand why the marketing department cut it together like this — they're all about simply trying to get asses in seats — but if you plan on seeing the movie, you'd be doing yourself a disservice by watching this trailer first. The way Saulnier plays with tension is such a huge part of why the movie works, and though you may not have context for it right now, if you go into the theater with these images in your mind, it will actively damage the experience of discovering how certain characters get out of sticky situations and — more importantly — which ones survive to certain points in the film. If you see someone blasting a shotgun in this trailer, you're going to be waiting for that moment in the movie; but the way the story is constructed, the film might want you to think that person is in danger of dying early on in the film.

You could argue that these reasons are the same for not watching any trailer, not just this one. I actually agree with that, but I realize that asking people to stop watching trailers altogether is ludicrous, and it's not something I'd want to ever happen. I loved the experience of watching the first teaser for Rogue One: A Star Wars Story yesterday, but there's a chance I might skip watching future trailers just so I don't have any more cool moments teased for me beforehand. With Green Room, though, a film that's so small scale and dependent on its pacing and tension being broken up with bursts of violence throughout, it just seems like a damaging experience to see all of those elements shaken up and presented out of context. Just trust me on this one.
