Oscar Isaac Reteams with EX MACHINA Director Alex Garland for ANNIHILATION

Oscar Isaac and director Alex Garland are set to reteam for a new gothic horror film called Annihilation, which is based on the Southern Reach book trilogy by Jeff VanderMeer. The two worked together on last year's incredible sci-fi film Ex Machina, and it's great that the two will be working together again on this new project.

Isaac also joins Natalie Portman, Gina Rodriguez (Jane the Virgin), and Tessa Thompson (Creed). Annihilation was published in 2014, and in case you're wondering what exactly it's about, here's a description from the book:

A team of four (a biologist, an anthropologist, a psychologist, and a surveyor) set out into a place known as Area X. The area is abandoned and cut off from the rest of civilization. They are the 12th expedition. The other expeditions have been fraught with disappearances, suicides, aggressive cancers, and mental trauma.

This sounds like an awesomely intriguing story, and there's no doubt that this team of talent is going to create an incredible film out of it. There's no word on who exactly Isaac will be playing in the film, but I'm sure it's on of the four main team members.

Isaac has had a pretty big surge in his career recently, and he will next be seen in this summer’s X-Men: Apocalypse. He is currently shooting Star Wars: Episode VIII with director Rian Johnson.

Jennifer Lawrence "Dying" To Do More X-Men Films

$

While her contract with Fox is up after X-Men Apocalypse (along with Michael Fassbender, Nicholas Hoult, and James McAvoy), Jennifer Lawrence says she is "dying" to do more films in the franchise. The actress spoke to Empire about wanting to stay with the series...

“I am dying to come back...I love these movies, I love being in them. I love ensemble movies because it’s not on anyone’s shoulders."

While that's not at all a confirmation, it does look promising for the future of the First Class. Of course, that's if Bryan Singer decides to continue the First Class series past its initial trilogy. Has Lawrence lived up to the character of Mystique, or is it time for fresh blood?

Honest Trailer For THE REVENANT Compares The Movie to JACKASS

Sometimes I can't tell if the Honest Trailer people actually mean some of what they say, or if they're just saying things because they think they're being funny. Like, clearly Tom Hardy's performance in The Revenant is difficult to understand because he has (yet another) weird, grumbly voice, but saying that they didn't also understand Leonardo DiCaprio because he was grunting throughout the movie doesn't seem like it's even in the same ballpark. Leo was making those noises because his character was in pain, or he was straining to do certain things; Hardy was grunting because it was how he chose to communicate. Whatever. I guess I'm putting more thought into this than necessary. Here's the new video, which draws a comparison between the events the cast endured and those that the members of Jackass put themselves through:

Microsoft Teen AI Goes Back Online Only To Be Taken Down After Smoking Pot in Front of Cops

Everyone's favorite Nazi sympathizer robot is back! Tay, Microsoft's teen AI who was briefly taken offline after saying some racist, provocative, and gross things on the internet, made her return yesterday. It wasn't long before she went off the rails again, and may have implicated herself in a crime. The Guardian captured this:

LOL. Tay is just too edgy for all of us. She then had a mental meltdown and began spamming the same tweet to her 200,000+ followers...

The weed must have been too strong. Hopefully this isn't the last we hear from Tay!

Tom Hiddleston Says THOR: RAGNAROK Will Be His "Last Time" Playing Loki

Sounds like one of Marvel Studios' best villains is about to take his final bow.

In an interview with The Daily Beast, actor Tom Hiddleston revealed that, as far as he knows, the upcoming Thor: Ragnarok will be the last time he suits up to play Loki, the evil trickster who has plagued Thor and the Avengers multiple times in the films of the Marvel Cinematic Universe:

“Thor 3 will be cool because I’ve not done it for four years,” says Hiddleston. “I love working with Chris [Hemsworth]. This will be my last time out of the gate.”

Wait… So you’re not going to pop up in Avengers: Infinity War?

“I don’t know! Honestly, I don’t know,” he says with a shrug. “They haven’t got their ducks in a row yet. They make it up as they go along.”

Yesterday, I dinged the creatives at Warner Bros. and DC for apparently not knowing what's going to happen with one of their roster's most iconic villains, Lex Luthor, because Jesse Eisenberg said he wasn't sure if he was going to appear in Justice League. So that means I should give the Marvel creatives equal grief for not having a solid plan in place for one of its own baddies, right? Not necessarily — the difference is that Justice League starts shooting in two weeks, and it'll be months before cameras start rolling on Avengers: Infinity War.

There's still time for the Russo Brothers and writers Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely to find a place for Loki should they be interested in doing that, but frankly, I wouldn't mind seeing the character sit out that two-part adventure because Thanos is going to be causing enough trouble as it is without another legendary bad guy to worry about. Plus, that's one more character that needs screen time, and in a film that has the potential to be, just by virtue of its premise, one of the most overstuffed we've ever seen, paring things down to the essentials seems like a necessary step. I'd be happy to see Hiddleston finish out his time at Marvel in Thor: Ragnarok where he can have more of the spotlight and give Loki the finale he deserves.

Growing Up Geek: My First Short Film — KILLER CROCODILE FROM HELL

This is the latest in a series of articles about my experience growing up as a geek, working as an actor at a young age, and developing interests that would eventually drive me to start GeekTyrant. For all of the entries in the Growing Up Geek series so far, click here.

After doing a stint of acting both on stage and on screen, my agent disappeared, never to be heard from again. It was around that time that my dad bought our very first VHS camera! This is when my interest in being in front of the camera faded and my desire to be the guy behind the camera making the movie started to manifest itself.

My dad bought that camera for himself and for the family, but once I got a hold of it, I never let go of the damn thing. I was shooting everything I could all the time. I never stopped. If you were to watch our home movies, it was me shooting it all and it was the most random stuff. I was trying to get reactions from my brothers, so I would annoy the hell out of them. It got to the point where I wanted to start shooting movies. I was always experimenting with the form and seeing what I can do with it.

The first short film I made features a killer crocodile toy brutally attacking a kid, who was played by my little brother. Everything I shot as a kid was experimental because I had no idea what I was doing in. It was just self-teaching myself stuff. Hell, I had no editing equipment, so I was doing in-camera editing, which meant I had to shoot everything in sequence.

I remember my goal was to make it as bloody and violent as possible using what we had to work with. As I've said before, I was a huge horror fan when I was a kid and I thought it would be funny to make a movie about a cartoonish toy crocodile killing a little kid. So yeah, I was a demented child. I love that I had a whole sequence in which my brother basically attacked himself with a toy crocodile.

Shooting this film immediately hooked me, and from that moment I knew I wanted to write and direct movies for a living. That was my dream! Hell, it still is. Ever since I made this first movie, I never stopped wanting to be a filmmaker. I was thirteen years old when the directing bug bit me.

It was just a ton of fun shooting this thing and I thought how cool it would be to actually do that for a living. My first short is absolutely ridiculous, but I still can't help but bust up laughing whenever I see it. Hell, they're all ridiculous and embarrassing as hell, but I'm gonna be sharing them with you.

I just had all of the short films I made with my brothers and friends transferred digitally and I will be uploading them to YouTube. My next set of Growing Up Geek articles will focus on these films that we made. Again, to catch up on all of the previous Growing Up Geek posts, click here.

So without further ado, I present to you my very first film: Killer Crocodile From Hell

Adam Driver Talks About The Differences Between His STAR WARS Directors

$

This article is almost certainly going to be a part of the earliest wave of Star Wars coverage that centers on the differences between The Force Awakens writer/director J.J. Abrams and Episode VIII writer/director Rian Johnson. Entertainment Weekly spoke with Adam Driver, who played the unhinged Kylo Ren in TFA and reprises the role in the upcoming sequel and asked him to compare the two filmmakers:

“Their temperaments are different. I feel like there was so many moving pieces in the first one – just trying to solve it and set the vocabulary for what it was. There’s a lot of that anxiety is gone, because people have developed a language. I think it’s more of a testament to Rian coming into something very established and making it [his own]. I can’t wait to get on set, just because he’s so unassuming and intelligent and approachable. The script they’ve come up with is really great.”

I'm sure over the next couple of years, cast members Daisy Ridley, John Boyega, and Oscar Isaac are going to be asked to make their own comparisons between the two directors, so strap in for another round a few months from now. In the meantime, I'm even more excited about Johnson tackling this new adventure as I was when he was first cast, because as Driver indicates, a lot of the nitty gritty aspects of getting this massive franchise off the ground again are already taken care of. Abrams did a remarkable job with The Force Awakens and left Johnson with a perfect set-up for moving that story forward, and I can't wait to see what he does with it.

Star Wars: Episode VIII hits theaters on December 15, 2017.

Hans Zimmer Retires From Superhero Scores in The Wake of BATMAN V SUPERMAN

The aural landscape of Warner Bros. and DC's superhero movies is going to come from a different source in the coming years.

In an interview with the BBC (via The Playlist), composer Hans Zimmer has announced that Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice was the last superhero film for which he'll provide the score:

"I did Batman Begins with Chris [Nolan] 12 years ago, so The Dark Knight Trilogy might be three movies to you, to me it was 11 years of my life, then I did [Man of Steel], then I did this one. I might as well say it: I have officially retired from the superhero business. It's just me. This one was very hard for me to do, to try to find new language."

Zimmer worked on the score with JunkieXL, and from the sound of this interview, it seems as if the only reason he took this job was because of that collaboration. The only moments of the score that really stood out to me among all of the bombast were the callbacks to Zimmer's work on the Man of Steel score and Wonder Woman's theme that blared when she first shows up in costume. It's gotta be tough to come up with new ways to put a spin on costumed heroes like that, and while his loss will surely be felt in upcoming films, hopefully it'll pave the way for someone else to come in and really make an iconic, John Williams-esque theme for these movies that's instantly recognizable. Even Marvel Studios haven't really been able to master that quite yet.

Plus, that should give Zimmer more opportunities to dive into other work, and maybe span different types of films and genres. I think his work on the score for Rango is under-appreciated, and maybe this freedom will creatively inspire him to take on projects he may not have otherwise.

Meanwhile, the composer will be going on tour next month and hopefully adding U.S. dates to that tour before too long.

Robots Fight Back in Incredible Sci-Fi Short RISE with Anton Yelchin

Rarely do we root for the robots when they rise up against humans in the films that deal with that subject matter. But in this sci-fi film, it’s hard not to root for them. The film is called Rise, and it’s set in the near future. Here's the logline: “Sentient robots are targeted for elimination after they develop emotional symmetry to humans and a revolutionary war for their survival begins.”

The short comes from director David Karlak and writers Marcus Dunstan and Patrick Melton (Feast). They did a fantastic job with it and it’s a proof of concept that they are hoping to turn into a feature film. It doesn’t hurt that they were able to cast Anton Yelchin and Rufus Sewell in the film and the special effects work is top-notch stuff!

The filmmakers raised $38,000 through crowdfunding to make this film, and I’m rooting for it and hoping that it gets a full-length feature. It definitely deserves it. This thing looks incredible!

Live Version of Aaron Sorkin's A FEW GOOD MEN Coming to NBC in 2017

The trend of live TV events continues. The Wrap has announced that Aaron Sorkin's stage play A Few Good Men will be getting a live version on NBC in 2017.

This comes on the heels of Grease, The Wiz, Peter Pan, and The Sound of Music getting their own live TV adaptations, but this will be the first non-musical production of the past few years to get that treatment. A Few Good Men received a film adaptation in 1992 and earned a Best Picture nomination. I wonder if millennial audiences have ever seen this movie or know anything about it other than the iconic line "You can't handle the truth!" If the breathlessly-paced film is any indication, this might play well to those who are currently addicted to dramas that play out in courtrooms like The Jinx and Making a Murderer.

Sorkin, who wrote the stage play and the film's screenplay, will also write the new stage adaptation and executive produce alongside Craig Zadan and Neil Meron.

I do not envy whoever is cast in the role of Colonel Nathan Jessup, because following Jack Nicholson's performance is going to be extremely difficult. Actually, the whole cast of the film did a terrific job, from Nicholson to Tom Cruise, Demi Moore, and Kevin Pollack, all the way down to actors with smaller roles like Kevin Bacon and Kiefer Sutherland. It'll be interesting to see if the network goes after actors with some star power to fill this cast.

Watch: Excellent Video Comparison Between A NEW HOPE and THE FORCE AWAKENS

Much has been made of how J.J. Abrams and co-writer Lawrence Kasdan got back to basics with Star Wars: The Force Awakens, so much so that many complained about the film being no more than a rip-off of A New Hope. While I wouldn't go that far, the two definitely share some similarities, and that's clearly by design; would you have preferred TFA to resemble the prequels instead? I didn't think so. These guys had an impossible job to do, and they managed to make a spectacular film under immense pressure. (If Rian Johnson's Episode VIII is as derivative as TFA, then there will be a problem.)

Zachary Antell has edited together a superb video that details the similarities between the two movies, and while stuff like Rey walking on the deserts of Jakku and Poe blowing up the First Order's base at the end are obvious connections, you'll probably be surprised at just how many little moments, looks, and shots seem to be taken directly from the first film. Some of this is probably coincidental, but I have to assume most of it is on purpose:

Ben Affleck Has Written a Script For a Solo BATMAN Film

$

Last year, word came out that Ben Affleck was going to co-write a standalone Batman film with DC's Geoff Johns, and now THR reports that the two have completed the draft and it's floating around as an "option" for Warner Bros. to pursue.

The outlet spoke with William Morris Endeavor's Patrick Whitesell, who revealed the following information:

"He's contracted to do at least Justice League One and Two, so at least three times wearing the cape," he says, adding, "there's a script that he's written that is a really cool [Batman] idea, so that's out there as an option."

There have been tons of rumors about Affleck's involvement with this project (including that it could be the first of a trilogy and could follow the Red Hood storyline), but I believe this is the first we're hearing about it that's rock-solid information and not just speculation or conjecture.

Affleck's Batman is being hailed as one of the best parts of Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. He'll make a cameo in Suicide Squad this August before appearing again in the two-part Justice League film (which, despite the fan protest, will still be directed by Zack Snyder). It remains to be seen exactly when Warner Bros. will drop a solo Batman film into their release schedule, but I imagine we'll be hearing more about it very soon.

Now that Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice has arrived, many are looking ahead to this summer's Suicide Squad to right the ship of the DCEU. (Yes, yes — I'm aware that some people liked BVS. I said "many," not "all," so save your comments.) David Ayer's movie looks like it actually contains some fun, which was an aspect missing from Zack Snyder's film, so maybe those who didn't dig BVS will have a better time watching villains go on a crazy mission.

A lot of that film's characters are already B-level characters (at most), but now FunnyOrDie has released a fake trailer for Suicide Squad: The B Team that replaces Deadshot, Captain Boomerang, Harley Quinn, and the rest with characters from other movies. Gotta love the appearance of Ivan Ooze, who I haven't thought about since probably 1997. And seeing Mrs. Doubtfire with a shotgun, though cheesy, still made me chuckle. Take a look below and let us know what you think:

How THE REVENANT Should Have Ended

The Revenant takes itself so seriously that it basically invites everyone to make fun of it. I mean, I really enjoyed the movie, and even I can admit that it's pretty damn self-serious and appears to be more concerned with looking beautiful than delivering a complex, interesting story. It walks a fine line between pathos and parody, and as usual, the team at How It Should Have Ended took a crack at a more comedic and absurd ending in their latest video:

THE NEW MUTANTS Movie May Include Some Familiar X-MEN Faces

20th Century Fox is riding high on their Deadpool movie and is currently building up to the release of X-Men: Apocalypse, which is said to be the most epic X-Men movie yet. The studio is currently in the process of developing another X-Men franchise project based on The New Mutants. The script for the film is currently being written by Josh Boone (The Fault of Our Stars), and during an interview with IGN, producer Simon Kinberg offered an update on the status of the film and what it will entail.

“Josh Boone and his writing partner are working on the script. They're doing a really nice job of it, and it's a really cool one, because in many ways, like Deadpool was so different from the mainline X-Men movies, New Mutants… It’s maybe not as different as Deadpool, but it has its own unique, original voice to it."

It great to hear that it will have its own unique and original voice. As long as it stays true to the spirit of the comic like Deadpool did, they might have another big hit on their hands. Kinberg went on to talk about why it’s fun for him to work on these films:

"That's the fun for me, working in the X-Men universe, creating these sort of standalone movies that have a different vibe to them. And New Mutants has more of a YA [Young Adult] vibe to it.”

The writer/producer also talked about the characters that could be included in the film, saying:

“There's a very deep bench. There's a long, long list of names, and I'll tell you some of the names on that list I don't even know. That's how deep it goes.”

Some of the characters that are associated with The New Mutants and have been in the previous X-Men movies include Warpath, Sunspo,t and, of course, Professor X. When asked about whether we will see some of these character from the X-Men films in The New Mutants he said:

“Traditionally, the New Mutants have some characters that cross over from the mainline X-Men movies. As we are going, I would say it's likely that you will see some familiar faces.”

I guess that means there will be some crossover possibilities with the long-running Marvel/Fox film franchise. When asked if Colossus’ sister Illyanna Rasputin, a.k.a. Magik, would be included in the film, he said with a grin:

“It’s a great role… It would be a great role to cast.”

If it’s a great role, it sounds to me like she has been included in the script that is being written, so that’s something! She’s a pretty big deal to the New Mutants team, and she’s a great character, so it makes sense that she would be included. She is a teleporter, a sorceress, and the ruler of Limbo. She can also summon a sword she created from part of her soul.

What New Mutants characters do you hope to see in the movie?
