James Gunn Teases Star-Lord’s Dad in GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY VOL. 2 Thumbnail Sketch

Director James Gunn has released a simple piece of thumbnail storyboard art from Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. This piece teases Star-Lord’s dad. He’s obviously not going to tell us who it is, but he doesn't care if you try to figure it out. The art above came with the following caption:

I don’t think you’ll ever guess what this one is, at least not until the film comes out (but I know that won't stop you from trying).

The art has a quote from Star-Lord saying, "My mom always said my dad was from the stars." There are three individuals standing by a pod of some sort that looks like it is surrounded by some kind of energy field? All we can really do it speculate, but I don’t think we can figure out who Star-Lord’s dad is from it. Maybe the pod crash-landed.

I will tell you that I think Star-Lord’s dad will end up being Starfox, who is an Eternal and Thanos’ younger brother. The guy is a ladies man and takes his name and inspiration from the Greek God of love, Eros, which is a name he also goes by. I think he and Star-Lord have some of the same personality traits as well. Starfox is described as a "a fun-loving, carefree womanizer and adventurer.” He could have easily visited earth and knocked up Peter’s mom at some point. Here is some information on his powers:

Starfox possess various superhuman attributes derived from his Eternal physiology. All Eternals have the ability to manipulate cosmic energies for a number of purposes. This energy is housed within the cells of their bodies and can be used to purposely augment their physical, mental and energy manipulative abilities. While all Eternals have at least some degree of these abilities, it takes centuries of intensive and disciplined training to manipulate these energies to their maximum potential. Titanian Eternals have the potential to manipulate cosmic energies in various ways, but Starfox himself has never undertaken the discipline of learning how.

Do you have any theories on who Star-Lord’s dad could be?

Just the other day Kevin Smith confirmed that his longtime pal Jason Mewes would appear in his episode of The Flash. Today we have our first look at him on the set of the film thanks to a photo shared by Smith. It features Mewes all decked out in leather standing with the villain Zoom. They are joined by Smith, who is sporting a custom made Blackhawks hockey sweater. The director also offered some new details on Mewes’ role in the episode:

"Jay was ecstatic to have scripted lines in one of his favorite shows. I also found an opportunity to sneak Jay into another scene as well - this time as a masked super villain."

We previously reported that Mewes cried after shooting the masked scene, and according to the director, it was the fact that he got to play a metahuman "that reduced him to tears.” Smith goes on to say that he's only seen Mewes cry twice, "one time [he cried] about the birth of his only begotten daughter, the other time was after he wrapped his super villain bit on The Flash."

I’m excited and curious to see how this episode of The Flash turns out. Smith's episode is set to air sometime in May.

This past weekend I had the pleasure of meeting artist Kris Wimberly at WonderCon. He’s created a lot of fun art fan art for your viewing enjoyment. One piece I saw that I had to share is called Harlequin Tink, and it mashes together Harley Quinn with Tinkerbell. The outcome of this mashup looks terrifyingly sinister. I’ll definitely be sharing more of his art so keep a lookout for those. If you want to buy any prints, click here!

New MYTHBUSTERS Series Coming and a Reality Show Will Determine New Hosts

As a longtime fan of Mythbusters I was sad to see it go after 14 seasons. I think we can all agree that hosts Adam Savage and Jamie Hyneman were what made that show so great. They were the heart and soul of the series, but The Science Channel is planning on reviving the series without them.

The are going to relaunch the show with new hosts, and those hosts will be found through a reality TV show the network is launching called Search for the Next MythBusters. I already don't like this idea, but according to THR, the show will focus on finding an "all-new generation of myth-busting science superstars with mind-blowing build skills and nerves of steel."

I understand that Mythbusters is one of the biggest properties for The Science Channel, but will fans of the series tune in for a revival without Savage and Hyneman, or will they shun it? Marc Etkind, general manager of Science Channel, had this to say about the new series:

"When I got to the network, and we clearly identified MythBusters as a franchise and something that was important to Science Channel and Discovery, and it was such a beloved show, I didn't want to let it go. So we looked really closely at what would be the best way to keep it going and invigorate it and thought, 'Let's host a worldwide search for the next MythBusters.'"

Does the network not understand that the heart and soul of this show was Savage and Hyneman? It's hard to get behind this idea, but I guess we'll see how it turns out. Etkind goes on to invite people to submit videos and describes the ideal candidates as "people who have building skills and are naturally inquisitive. People who don't mind getting embarrassed a little bit, who ask lots of questions and have the skills and knowledge to put those to the test."

The reality series to find the new host or hosts will start with 15 finalists. Those competitors will look to solve challenges that include the "classic myths from the show as well as new myths. Hopefuls will be eliminated each episode by a team of judges — comprised of those who have been involved with MythBusters at some point over the years — until the final picks are made; Etkind says that could be one person or several people, depending on what happens."

Etkind also revealed that the format of MythBusters could be tweaked for the revival. He says:

"We'll see who emerges victorious and from those folks determine what the best format is. It's a long-running goal for Science Channel to have MythBusters on the air."

So it sounds like it's a show that they will never want to end. Is this Mythbusters revival series something you can get behind? Or do you think it should have ended with Savage and Hyneman?

Famke Janssen to Star in THE BLACKLIST Spinoff Series at NBC

The Blacklist is such a great show that NBC has decided to develop a female led spinoff series starring Famke Janssen (X-Men). The news comes from Variety, who says that the network hasn't made an official commitment, but if it does get the greenlight, it would revolve around Janssen’s central character who is named Susan “Scottie” Halsted.

The character is set to be introduced and make her debut on The Blacklist in the May 5th episode. She will also appear in the following episode on May 12th, which is a week before the season three finale. According to the report, that finale will serve a the backdoor pilot for the spinoff series.

I imagine the network is waiting to see how Janssen's character is received by viewers before they give the spinoff an official greenlight. They obviously think her character is interesting and strong enough to carry her own show!

There are no plot details that have been revealed, but Insiders say that Janssen’s character was conceived as Ryan Eggold’s on-screen mother. Also, if the spin-off does happen, Janssen will be joined by Edi Gathegi as a regular. He would reprise his role of Mr. Solomon, who is currently a character on The Blacklist.

As a fan of The Blacklist and Janssen, I'm excited to be introduced to this new character and interested in seeing the spin-off go into development.

Adam Savage Goes Incognito Wearing Kickass HELLBOY Cosplay

Adam Savage recently attended the inaugural Silicon Valley Comic Con, and he did something pretty damn cool. He created a costume based on the comic book version of Hellboy and walked around the convention wearing it incognito. Hellboy is a favorite character of Savage's, and eight years ago he first cosplayed the movie version of the character at San Diego Comic-Con .

A couple of weeks ago Savage released a video of himself building Hellboy's sword, which perfectly complements his costume. People managed recognize that it was Savage pretty fast because of that sword. It doesn't matter, though, because it doesn't change the fact that this is one of the coolest Hellboy cosplays I've seen.

Savage is a super talented individual who creates some pretty incredible stuff, and it's insane that he managed to fit that whole costume into a duffle bag!

Our pals Nick and Gary of Sneaky Zebra were over at WonderCon making another one of their CMV's (cosplay music videos). Featuring an upbeat, catchy tune and showcasing some amazing cosplayers, including the familiar face of a certain mad Titan that we featured in an article here. There were so many amazing costumes that it required a rewatch — or three — in order to appreciate all the work some of these diehard geeks put into their cosplay. Who knows, maybe you'll see yourself in one of their videos someday, but be careful, I hear they can sneak up on ya.

He doesn't know how, when, where, or why, but Ewan McGregor wants in on the Star Wars series! In a video interview with Collider, the actor expresses his interest in portraying Obi-Wan again in a standalone film (or trilogy as he suggests)! He also talks about watching The Force Awakens, and whether or not he's spoken with producer Kathleen Kennedy. Basically, everything we've wanted to know, he lays it out!

Also, how the hell does he look younger?!

Bradley Cooper to Star in Max Landis' Thriller DEEPER

$

Max Landis (Chronicle, Victor Frankenstein, American Ultra) recently sold his script for the Will Smith/Joel Edgerton starrer Bright to Netflix for a reported $3 million, and it sounds like he already has another project heating up in Hollywood. The Wrap reports that Bradley Cooper is attached to star and White God director Kornel Mundruczo is lined up to direct Deeper, a new thriller that multiple studios are currently bidding on.

“Deeper” is a drama about a disgraced astronaut who embarks on a mission to reach the bottom of a newly-discovered oceanic trench, which some speculate may be the lowest point on Earth. Facing great danger, he quickly finds himself in a physical and psychological fight against mysterious forces.

Landis told The Playlist that Deeper is "the best thing [he's] ever written," and he also told them about a new "spiritual sequel" to that project that he's already writing, which is called Higher:

"[It's] like a two-person play — it all takes place in a barn and it's about a woman. The whole script is 75 pages of one scene and then 25 pages of going up into outer space. But for the whole script, it's just a lawyer talking to a woman who's shirtless and covered in writing and equations and who's building what appears to be a spaceship. At first it seems like the guy’s just a mean lawyer or a government agent who's been sent to shut down what she's doing. And then the scene I'm writing right now, page 25 — I'm so excited— shows her going back and forth with this lawyer, and less and less of the things she's saying are making sense," he said.
"It's clear that she's made a tiny nuclear reactor — she's a genius and it's clear she wants to go into orbit for reasons we don't fully understand," Landis continued. "But she's also saying weird things about the stars going out, and she says her daughter is 16 while he says her daughter is 9. She goes into this very long rant, and it ends with him going, 'Are you sure what you remember is accurate to reality?' And she says, 'Yes. Yes, stop bullying me.' And he goes, 'Who am I?' And she goes, 'I don't know.' He goes, 'Who am I? Look at me.' And she realizes it's her fucking husband. She's having a schizophrenic break. So that's the end of the first act."

The writer is on a tear right now, with his directorial debut Me Him Her currently in theaters and the Sam Rockwell/Anna Kendrick film Mr. Right coming out on April 8th. What do you think about Deeper?

Here's Some Much-Needed Good News About The Future of The DCEU Movies

$

0

It's an understatement to call Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice a divisive film. It's one of those "draw a line in the sand" movies where a lot of people feel the need to scream their opinions instead of having a calm conversation about the movie. While a segment of the population loves it, there are others — like myself — who did not like the film for a myriad of reasons, many of which you can read about here. One of the many things I didn't like was the dour tone of the movie; I understand (and agree) that not every superhero movie should have a light and breezy Guardians of the Galaxy-style tone, but there was no joy whatsoever in BVS, and precious few moments that lightened the otherwise constantly dark mood.

Many assumed Suicide Squad would change that, and BirthMoviesDeath has an interesting report about what's happening with that film. One of their sources told them that all of the film's jokes were in the most recent trailer, and that the actual film itself is a bit darker than the trailer might indicate. But Warner Bros. and DC heard the fan reaction to the humor and presumed lighter tone, so they've given the production tens of millions of dollars to do reshoots that are "adding humor and lightness into the film."

Hearing that WB is aware that they need to inject some fun into these movies - and that's what I'm hearing is happening here, not that they're inserting jokes left and right but that they're beefing up fun character moments and interactions - can only mean good things for the future of the DC Movieverse after the deadly serious, zero fun Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice.

That's definitely good news. Like I said before, I'm totally OK with these DC films having dark tones, but providing some levity here and there certainly won't kill those vibes and it should do wonders to keep the movies from feeling oppressively bleak.

Also worth noting from BMD's report is that they're hearing WB is going to be "much more involved" on Justice League than they were on BVS. To me, that could be both a good and bad thing. I'll give Zack Snyder the benefit of the doubt and assume he didn't love the idea of stopping his movie in its tracks to introduce members of the Justice League in video snippets, so the studio's involvement might lead to more of those clunky, presumably-mandated moments to continue to set up future films. Then again, there might be a voice of reason at the studio that could keep the new movie from adopting the same tone and disrespect of the characters that caused fans to start an ill-fated petition to remove Snyder from directing Justice League altogether. We'll have to wait and see how it turns out, but it sounds like at least someone at the studio is aware of fan complaints about the gloominess of BVS and is working to lighten future movies up just a little bit.

Bryan Cranston and Kevin Hart Co-Starring in Remake of THE INTOUCHABLES

I haven't seen the original French version of The Intouchables, but I thought I knew enough about it to sort of scoff at the news that Bryan Cranston and Kevin Hart are in talks to star in an American remake. The film is about an injured aristocrat who hires a guy from the projects to be his caretaker, and my gut reaction was that Cranston could play this role in his sleep, but Hart seemed like a strange fit for the role originally played by Omar Sy. Then I watched the trailer again:

I can totally see the pint-sized, motor-mouthed actor fitting into that role perfectly. Sure, he'll be more shrill than Sy ever was because that's his shtick, and I think the jokes might be a little dumbed down to fit with his style and try to attract a larger audience, but I think this could actually work. The original French version was a huge hit, pulling in over $425 million worldwide when it was released back in 2012.

Colin Firth and Chris Tucker were eyed to star in this remake a few years ago, but that version stalled. It seems to have new life now, and filming is supposed to begin sometime this summer under the direction of Simon Curtis (My Week With Marilyn), who's working from a script by Paul Feig (Ghostbusters, Spy, Bridesmaids). Have you seen the original? Think these two actors are good replacements?

HOUSE OF CARDS and WONDER WOMAN Star Robin Wright Joins BLADE RUNNER 2

The headline pretty much sums up all the info we have about this right now: Robin Wright (The Princess Bride) has joined Harrison Ford and Ryan Gosling in the cast of Blade Runner 2. Wright has been absolutely killing it on the Netflix original series House of Cards over the past few years, and not long ago we saw our first look of her in costume for the upcoming Wonder Woman solo film. There's no word yet about whether or not she'll play a Replicant, but she's proven herself a versatile enough actress to essentially be able to pull off just about anything. Plot details are being kept under wraps, though we think we know what the opening scene will be.

Denis Villeneuve (Sicario, Prisoners) is taking over for Ridley Scott in the director's chair this time around, and Roger Deakins will serve as the movie's cinematographer. Shooting starts in July, and it's set to be released on January 12, 2018, which is strange because typically January is the time of year in which studios dump terrible films. Looks like Warner Bros. is looking to give movie fans something worthwhile in the early days of 2018. Read the full press release below (via /Film):

LOS ANGELES, CA, MARCH 31, 2016 – Golden Globe winner Robin Wright is in final negotiations to join Ryan Gosling and Harrison Ford in Alcon Entertainment’s sequel to Ridley Scott’s 1982 masterpiece BLADE RUNNER, it was announced by Alcon co-founders and co-CEO’s Broderick Johnson and Andrew Kosove.
Director Denis Villeneuve (Sicario, Prisoners) is directing. Principal photography is scheduled to begin July 2016 and the film will be released by Warner Bros. in North America, Sony Pictures Releasing International will distribute in all overseas territories in all media.
The film is set several decades after the 1982 original, with Harrison Ford reprising his iconic role as Rick Deckard. The film is written by Hampton Fancher and Michael Green, and succeeds the initial story by Fancher and David Peoples based on Philip K. Dick’s novel Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep. Story details, as well as Wright’s character, are not being revealed.
Alcon Entertainment acquired the film, television and ancillary franchise rights to BLADE RUNNER in 2011 from the late producer Bud Yorkin and Cynthia Sikes Yorkin to produce prequels and sequels to the iconic science-fiction thriller. Cynthia Sikes Yorkin will produce along with Johnson and Kosove. Bud Yorkin will receive producer credit.
Frank Giustra and Tim Gamble, CEO’s of Thunderbird Films, will serve as executive producers. Ridley Scott will also executive produce.
Wright’s upcoming projects include Wonder Woman from director Patty Jenkins (Monster) where she will star alongside Chris Pine (Star Trek) and Gal Gadot (Fast and Furious franchise). She can currently be seen on season 4 of House of Cards where she reprises her Golden Globe winning role as Claire Underwood.

How Much Would It Cost to Be a Wizard at Hogwarts Like Harry Potter?

$
0

Ever wonder how much it might cost you to be a wizard at Hogwarts? Well, Fandango released a video that breaks down those costs for you. It a pretty fun video, but I do have to point out that that I'm pretty sure all of the destruction costs included in video could easily be fixed with magical spells, so the students wouldn't really be responsible for paying for the damages. So minus all of that, it probably wouldn't be that much money to attend! However, there is a chance it could cost a person their life in one of those epic battles. I just wish a magical school like Hogwarts actually existed outside of the books, movies, and theme parks.

Disney is Working on a Live-Action Movie About Snow White's Sister Called ROSE RED

$

From the outside looking in, it must appear like American cinema is borderline obsessed with Snow White right now. There were the dueling films of Mirror Mirror and Snow White and The Huntsman a few years ago, a prequel to one of those called The Huntsman: Winter's War coming out in less than a month, and now THR brings word that Disney is developing a live-action film about Snow White's sister called Rose Red.

Justin Merz originally wrote the screenplay, but Snow White and The Huntsman writer Evan Daughtery came on and reworked it into something closer to the Disney animated film.

The story is a revisionist take that transposes Rose Red into the Snow White tale, making her a key player in the later moments of the classic story. When Snow White takes a bite from the iconic poison apple and falls into her Sleeping Death, her estranged sister, Rose Red, must undertake a dangerous quest with Grumpy and the other dwarfs to find a way to break the curse and bring Snow White back to life.

I know Rose Red best from her appearance in Bill Willingham's amazing comic series Fables, which has been on the path toward getting a film adaptation for years. I don't really trust Daugherty's writing chops yet (he also wrote Divergent and the 2014 Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles), so at this stage, I don't have much faith in this idea. Right now, it just seems like yet another live-action fairy tale project for a studio that's been scooping them up and developing those left and right. I'll reserve judgment until it makes it through the development process and I can see a trailer.
