Zack Snyder Thought It Was "Fun" To Kill Off This DC Comics Character

Spoilers ahead for Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice.

Did you know that Jimmy Olsen was in Batman v Superman? His name is never mentioned in the actual film, but if you sat through the credits, you might have noticed that he was played by actor Michael Cassidy, and he appeared as the photographer/CIA agent in Africa who gets executed by a terrorist. Director Zack Snyder talked to EW about the choice to murder the character:

“We just did it as this little aside because we had been tracking where we thought the movies were gonna go, and we don’t have room for Jimmy Olsen in our big pantheon of characters, but we can have fun with him, right?”

Yeah, that's really fun. He was so confident that there would be absolutely no way that he or any other filmmaker who enters the DCEU would ever want to use a recognizable character like Jimmy Olsen that he decided to have him shot right in front of Lois Lane for no reason whatsoever. This is another example of what I was talking about in my review: Snyder loves doing things because they're "cool" (or because they look cool), and that quote pretty much proves that was the case here. But when I didn't care about Superman's death at the end of the movie, it was because I didn't think the movie did a good enough job setting up the idea that he'd be ready and willing to make that sacrifice after what we'd seen of him thus far; I didn't care about Jimmy Olsen's death because I didn't even know he was in the damn movie until the end credits.

Snyder's version of "fun" from earlier seems to be in line with the delusion of Warner Bros. domestic distribution chief Jeff Goldstein, who said:

"Clearly, audiences have embraced [the movie] and we are already seeing repeat business. It's just fun. Often, there's a disconnect between critics and audiences. It doesn’t take itself seriously. It’s just an enjoyable afternoon at the movies."

Look, I hate to harp on this point, because it sounds like I hated the movie more than I actually did, but there is almost nothing "fun" or "enjoyable" about Dawn of Justice. That's part of the reason I didn't like it! No one smiles, everyone takes everything deathly seriously, and there's absolutely no sense of self-awareness to any of the characters. Now that certainly doesn't mean that I wanted this movie to have Guardians of the Galaxy or The Avengers levels of quips and one-liners, because I do love the idea of there being all different kinds of superhero films with varying tones that connect with different people. But if Batman v Superman was competent at telling its story, the tone wouldn't have bothered me. But since it failed in that regard, the tone becomes yet another in a long list of things that don't do the film any favors as it struggles under the weight of trying to set up a whole franchise in lieu of telling its own satisfying story.

Supercut Pays Tribute To Live-Action Versions of Alfred Pennyworth, Batman's Beloved Butler

Ben Affleck is a solid Batman in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, and I think Jeremy Irons could end up being a great Alfred if he's given enough material to work with. As it is, he didn't have very many moments to shine in the new film, but he made the most of it and did a fine job. The character of Alfred Pennyworth has traditionally been a source of dry wit in the comics and movies, and since humor seems to be something the new Batman and Superman films in the DCEU are largely looking to avoid, I wonder if Irons will get the chance he deserves to leave his mark and make a lasting impact as this character.

In any case, Slate is here with a supercut to the live-action versions of Batman's beloved butler. I really enjoyed Michael Gough's take, and Alan Napier was an excellent fit for the old '60s show (and movie), but I think Michael Caine might be the definitive version of the character in my mind right now. Who's your favorite cinematic Alfred? Sound off in the comments below.

Ash Parties Hard with His Chainsaw in Photo from ASH VS EVIL DEAD Season 2

ash-is-partying-hard-in-first-photo-from-ash-vs-evil-dead-season-2

The first photo from Ash Vs. Evil Dead has been released. It doesn’t show Ash Williams battling deadites or shooting off his boom stick. Nope, this image features Bruce Campbell’s Ash wielding his chainsaw hand as he wildly saws through a keg while partying harder than anyone has ever partied before.

Ash Vs. Evil Dead is set to premiere later this year, and I cannot wait to see how Ash's story plays out from where we last saw him in season one. In case you forgot, he, Pablo, and Kelly hit the road to Jacksonville, Florida where Ash hopes to live out the rest of his days in complete bliss. We all know that’s not how things are going to turn out for him, though. As you can see in the photo above, he’s going to enjoy it while it lasts!

Executive producer Craig DiGregorio had this to say about the photo:

“When you have a chain-saw hand, this is how you tap a keg. Unfortunately for Ash, the party is cut short when he must return home to continue the fight against evil.”

Oh, and just so you know, no real beer was harmed in the making of the series.

These Samurai Armor Inspired Hoodies Are the Coolest Things!

I’ve always loved the look of the medieval Samurai warriors. They were just so damn cool looking. They had a unique style that was unlike any other warrior in the world. In my opinion their style was better than any other medieval warriors. That traditional Japanese armor style is now in the process of becoming a wearable hoodie!

The hoodie comes from Tokyo Otaku Mode who created a few of them and did a soft launch in 2015 to see if people would be interested in buying them. The limited number of hoodies they created quickly sold out. Since they were a hit, they are no looking to mass produce them. They’ve launched an Indiegogo campaign to help make that happen. This is what they had to say about their hoodie:

It all started a few years ago when we stumbled upon an online article displaying a hoodie based on a Western suit of armor. “What a fantastic product,” we thought. “How come there isn’t one based on traditional Japanese armor?” We wanted one so badly that we searched all over the internet, but apparently such apparel did not exist in Japan.
"If it doesn't exist, why not bring it into existence?"
And so, 2 years ago, we titled our project "Samurai Armor Hoodie" and began developing.
For 2 years, we designed prototype after prototype, until finally, in the winter of 2015, it was completed and scheduled for release. The hoodies were released at 32,000 Yen in Japan, and before we knew it, they were completely sold out.
Now, with this campaign, we would like to bring a further improved version of these hoodies to fans around the world!

You can check out a video showing off the Samurai hoodie along with some photos.

2-new-tv-spots-for-captain-america-civil-war-and-character-promo-images

Three new TV spots have surfaced for Captain America: Civil War for fans to check out. After seeing Batman v Superman, I'm convinced Marvel is and always will be the superior film franchise. They just know how to tell all-around better-balanced stories with their characters. I've been hearing that Civil War is the best film that Marvel has made so far, which is very exciting. I have no doubt that it will put Batman v Superman to shame. While we are waiting for it to be released, check out these TV spots! I also included a collection of promo images featuring full body shots of some of the major players in the movie.

Marvel’s Captain America: Civil War finds Steve Rogers leading the newly formed team of Avengers in their continued efforts to safeguard humanity. But after another incident involving the Avengers results in collateral damage, political pressure mounts to install a system of accountability, headed by a governing body to oversee and direct the team. The new status quo fractures the Avengers, resulting in two camps—one led by Steve Rogers and his desire for the Avengers to remain free to defend humanity without government interference, and the other following Tony Stark’s surprising decision to support government oversight and accountability.

The movie is set to be released on May 6th.

Rare Behind-the-Scenes Set Photos from the Original STAR TREK Series

rare-behind-the-scenes-set-photo-from-the-original-star-trek-series

2016 marks the 50th Anniversary of Star Trek, and later this year fans will be treated with the new film Star Trek Beyond. The franchise has sure come a long way since the original 1960 series. The magic of that series will never be able to be replicated. It’s one of a kind and as a way to celebrate that series Gerald Gurian has released a book called To Boldly Go: Rare Photos from the TOS Soundstage. It offers fans a rare behind-the-scenes look at the making of the series.

There are hundreds of photos in the book that feature the cast, sets, crew, models, and a lot of other things that played a part in bringing this wonderful sci-fi series to life. I’ve included a small collection of those photos that you can check out below. Here's the full book description:

This volume presents over 300 rare, behind-the-scenes images - many in full, vivid color - from the making of the first season and pilot episodes of the original, legendary Star Trek television series (NBC, 1966 - 1969) which starred William Shatner and Leonard Nimoy. All of the photographs shown in this edition come from the author's personal collection, which is over four decades in the making and consists of thousands of rare NBC publicity shots, candid still photos/negatives taken on the Original Series sets, and rare Lincoln Enterprises film clips (the unused pieces of printed footage, called the "trims" and "outtakes", that were left over after the Desilu Studios film editors assembled the desirable footage into the finished master versions of the Star Trek episodes). The unused film clips were then discarded by the studio and sold to fans by Gene Roddenberry's company while the show was still in production. Many of these rare photos were featured in black-and-white format in the Saturn award winning three book series These Are The Voyages: TOS by Marc Cushman (Jacobs/Brown Press, 2013 - 2015); and now they are displayed - the majority in color - alongside a wealth of additional imagery. The author has personally digitally restored all of the rare photos in this edition, and has paid careful attention to recreating the bold and vivid colors that were present in the original broadcasts of the episodes. On a few occasions, the knowledge gained by the appearance of screen used TOS memorabilia at auction - such as the recent 2013 sale by Julien's Auctions in Los Angeles of Captain Kirk's Laser Rifle from the second pilot "Where No Man Has Gone Before", or the 2010 sale of the Balok puppet head from "The Corbomite Maneuver" by the California auction house Profiles In History - has enabled the vintage imagery to be enhanced with real world, historically accurate colors. And the author has even, for the first time ever to his knowledge, colorized several black and white candid and publicity photos as some special additions to the contents of this volume. So, readers will enjoy some of the finest, historically accurate rare Star Trek photo restorations ever produced; featuring many entertaining images that they likely have never seen before. The rare pictures in this collection are all accompanied by informative descriptions, on occasion quite extensive, about the filming of the related scene. All told, this volume represents an entertaining and unique photographic history of the making of the first season of TOS.

This seems like it would be a must own book for any Star Trek fan.

Will Wolverine Make an Appearance in X-MEN: APOCALYPSE?

$

0

Hugh Jackman's Wolverine has appeared in every single X-Men movie since the franchise started. We've been hearing that he won't be appearing in X-Men: Apocalypse, though, but that could just be something everyone is saying to surprise fans.

During an interview with Empire, director Bryan Singer was asked about Wolverine, and if he had a part to play in the story. This is what he said:

"As a central character, he didn't fit into this particular story."

So he won't play a "central character," but that doesn't mean he won't be in the movie. He didn't have a central role in X-Men: First Class but he still was given a great little cameo. So can we expect to see him appear in a small role? Maybe, and Singer teases where that cameo might happen. He explains:

"The quartet have been kidnapped by army twonk William Stryker following a cataclysmic event at the X-Mansion, and wake up in a holding cell. On a balcony above them, Stryker taunts his prisoners, demanding to know the whereabouts of Magneto."

This facility that Stryker takes the mutants to is Weapon X, which as you all know is the same place that gave Wolverine his famous adamantium skeleton and claws. If you remember in X-Men: Days of Future Past, the 1970s version of Wolverine was pulled out of a lake and taken by Stryker. So if Wolverine does appear in X-Men: Apocalypse, it will most likely be at Weapon X. It seems like it's all set up to happen that way.

On a separate note, Singer told Empire that he isn't going to be leaving the X-Men franchise anytime soon.

"Abandoning the franchise is not something I think about. But I could not roll into another X-Men movie tomorrow. And I hope not to. I hope to take a break."

After he's finished with Apocalypse, he's moving on to direct 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea. I'm sure he'll jump right back into another X-men movie after that. When asked if there are villains he'd like to work with, he said:

"love to use Proteus somehow. There's a lot visually you could do with a character like that."

So I guess we can expect to see Proteus in some future installment of the franchise. I do hope to see Wolverine in X-Men: Apocalypse. It would be kind of cool to see what;s going on with him in Weapon X. Would you want to see Wolverine show up, and do you think it will happen?

The movie will be released on May 27th, 2016.

Kevin Smith Confirms Jason Mewes Will Appear in THE FLASH

$

0

Earlier this month, Kevin Smith posted a photo of himself with his longtime friend Jason Mewes on the set of the episode of The Flash that Smith is directing. This led to some speculation that Jay and Silent Bob might appear in the episode, which would have been fun. But you won't be seeing both those characters on screen. You'll get one of them, though! Smith revealed the news during his Hollywood Babble-On podcast, saying:

“I did not put Jay and Silent Bob in it. I did put Jay in it.”

He goes on to explain how big of a deal this was to Mewes, who is a huge fan of the CW's DC universe.

“Because he was my conduit to those shows. Arrow is his religion, dude. He almost came to visit me on Flash just so he could walk across the lot and look at the Arrow sets and sh*t, and dream about salmon laddering up and sh*t.”

Mewes didn't always have a role in the series. He pretty much originally came in to be Smith's "assistant," but the writers of The Flash ended up writing in a part for him in the script, and that's something Smith didn't know they were going to do. When they told him what they did, he said:

“Are you sh*tting me? Because his f**king head will explode if I tell him that he’s going to be on a CW show, that he’s going to live on the CW.”

Smith went on to say that Mewes will have two scenes in the episode and his first one includes lines. Smith explains that the second scene was a big deal for Mewes and that he was a lot more excited about that one. He teased that it involves a big crowd shot and the actor is wearing a mask in the scene. It was such a great experience for Mewes that he cried after filming it, and according to Smith, that's not something he does often.

So even though Jay and Silent Bob won't be in the episode Mewes still made it in, and it sounds like it was one of the highlights of his life, so that's pretty cool.

Batman Fights Terminator in This Awesome Stop-Motion Animated Film

Batman has faced off with a lot of villains over the years. He’s even taken on the Predator, but this is the first time I recall seeing him take on The Terminator! Captain McKay Random created this stop-motion animated short called Batman Vs. Terminator, and in it Batman has to save the world from Skynet. The short is really well done, and it is fun watching these two classic characters battle each other.

Netflix Has 31% Fewer Titles Than It Did 2 Years Ago

If you think there's less stuff to watch on Netflix, you're right. In fact, AllFlicks reports the company has shrunk its catalog by 31% over the past two years...

More specifically, they've dropped about 25% of their TV shows and 33% of their movies!

There could be a couple reasons for that. The most likely reason is Netflix's decision to pursue more original content, which costs more money than buying the rights to films in its catalog.

Personally, I can't complain. I've been a fan of many of the shows Netflix has created and brought back! Do you feel different about the original content preference in place of films you want to see?

That blue lightsaber has some extensive mileage on it! I guess I never thought about it until Christopher Sherwood brought me to the verge of tears watching it, but that weapon is nearly 70-80 years old! It's also killed A LOT of people (and children). The lifespan on those things is incredible!

Kevin Smith Says That BATMAN V SUPERMAN Didn't Have A Heart

$
0
0

As much as I enjoyed Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, the movie was still lacking in both story and character development. It looked extremely cool, but there's more to making a movie than awesome visuals. While talking about the film with Ralph Garman on his Hollywood Babble-On podcast, Kevin Smith shared his thoughts on the film saying that it didn't have a heart. He explains:

"Remember before when we were talking about Flash, and that it has heart, humor, and spectacle. The movie I felt like didn't really have a heart. It was certainly fucking humorless, there was nothing funny going on in that world whatsoever, but it had lots of spectacle. Like you can't take that away from Snyder. Boy, he knows how to like compose a frame and how to setup a shot. Beautiful visual stylist but you need more than just the pictures, you need like characterization and these characters seemed off character, particularly Superman."

I don't always share the same opinion as Smith, but I completely agree with him on this. Those were the films biggest issues. Smith is a HUGE Batman fan, and he was so excited for this movie. I remember how much he gushed about how awesome Batman's suit was, but he and Garman didn't seem to care for how the character was portrayed. Here's their conversation regarding that:

Garman: He just wasn't that bright.
Smith: Certainly not the world's greatest detective! More like Bat-Trump.
Garman: He was Bat-Trump. A rich guy with a bad attitude. Who really hated immigrants.
Smith: He hates immigrants in a big bad way!
Garman: I'm gonna build a wall around Krypton, and I'm gonna make them pay for it. I'm going to build a wall around the Hall of Justice, it's what I do. I build walls and they're huge."

They were obviously having some fun here comparing Batman to Donald Trump, but hopefully we do get to see Batman use some of his detective skills in the future. He'll have to put them to use when he's gathering together the Justice League members in the next film.

What do you think about Smith's thoughts on the movie? Do you agree with what he had to say here, or do you think he's completely wrong?

Review: JUSTICE LEAGUE VS. TEEN TITANS Lands Safe Hits

$

0

Justice League Vs. Teen Titans is Warner Brothers' other versus film coming out this March. During last weekend's WonderCon I had a chance to see an advanced screening of the animated movie that's in the same cineverse as films like Son of Batman and Justice League: War.

If you've seen those previous films then your expectations should be perfectly dialed in for what the tone, quality of animation, and voice acting will be like. That said, Justice League Vs. Teen Titans feels pretty safe in terms of story. While solidly told, it's not mind blowing for a team "origin" story. The story is so simple giving a summary would give away too much (so sorry for the short review).

The Teen Titans comprise Raven, Blue Beetle, and Beast Boy. They're appropriately awkward and overpowered, which keeps their showdown with members of The Justice League from ending quickly. Starfire is the team's naive adult supervisor who has never been drawn more attractively. When you see the movie you'll know what I mean. Damian Wayne's integration into the Titans is full of expected quippy humor, yet the jokes still work.

While not as great as last year's Batman vs. Robin, Justice League vs. Teen Titans is fun and stays true to previous incarnations of Teen Titans. Just know that not much changes by the end and is just a windup for future Teen Titan movies, hopefully with a lot more Nightwing.

ALICE THROUGH THE LOOKING GLASS Trailer: Tea Time, Forever

The most impressive thing about this new trailer for Alice Through the Looking Glass is the way The Muppets director James Bobin and new-to-this-franchise production designer Dan Hennah was able to mimic Tim Burton's distinctive style from the previous movie. This still doesn't look like a world I want to spend another second of my life dedicated to watching, because practically everything about this goes against my personal tastes in a huge way. Opening in a mental ward? Check. Johnny Depp being goofy? Check. Topsy turvy landscapes, gigantic CGI nonsense, and characters I don't care about? Check, check, check.

But hey, at least we get to hear the late Alan Rickman speak once again.

Alice Through the Looking Glass hits theaters on May 27th.

If you're someone who subscribes to the theory that Marvel movies are superior to DC, then you'll enjoy this. If you're someone who believes the opposite, you will immediately fly to the comments, defend Ben Affleck, and call into question every movie critic who has ever graced the grounds of this green Earth.

I'm just the messenger. Sabconth is the creator. We both agree Ben Affleck isn't to blame for Batman v Superman.

Jesse Eisenberg Doesn't Know if Lex Luthor is Returning in JUSTICE LEAGUE

$

0

Spoilers for Batman v Superman ahead.

Jesse Eisenberg's take on Lex Luthor in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice has been just about a polarizing as the film itself. Some people liked the spazzy, twitchy, millennial version of the villainous billionaire, while others — myself included — felt as if the actor walked in from a totally different movie. His performance was all over the place and many of his actions were inexplicable to me — you can't just say "Well, he's Lex Luthor! Of course he hates Superman! What did you expect?" and wave those issues away. What was his end game with releasing Doomsday on the city? There's no way he knew that both he and Superman would kill each other at the end of their fight. Anyway...

Luthor ends the movie ranting about bells being rung and hinting at the coming of Darkseid, but will we see Lex in 2017's Justice League? Despite the fact that the movie begins filming in two weeks, Eisenberg himself claims he doesn't know the answer. He tells Business Insider:

“I don’t know if they are so settled on where my character goes. I only hope I have another opportunity to work with these wonderful people and play this interesting character.”

The actor does say that he'd be "thrilled" to return to the role, but it's probably not a great sign that the Warner Bros./DC creatives "aren't so settled" on what happens to one of the most iconic characters in comic book history. Seems like he should know if he's going to be needed on set in a few weeks, at the very least. But for his part, Eisenberg appreciates the different elements of Lex:

“The character has so many different faces. He has a public persona that appears charming and friendly and then a deeply disturbed private persona, so it will be interesting to see where he goes.”

Justice LeaguePart 1 hits theaters on November 17, 2017.

Negan and Lucille on New Poster For THE WALKING DEAD's Season 6 Finale

$

The wait is almost over until fans get to see the 90-minute season six finale of The Walking Dead this Sunday, and the presence of the new villain, Negan (played by Jeffrey Dean Morgan), will change the show forever. AMC has just released a new teaser poster featuring the character and his beloved bat (nicknamed Lucille), and you can bet that sucker is going to be doing some serious damage to a character (or maybe multiple characters?) that fans love before everything is said and done.

I've seen a lot of speculation about how this season's finale is going to end. We know it's going to be a massive cliffhanger, but will it involve Negan killing a fan favorite? Will he line up a bunch of people and kill one of them, but we won't know find out who it was until next season? Will we even see Jeffrey Dean Morgan's face at all this season? We'll find out very soon.

Some cast members have also talked about how filming the finale sickened them and how it was a hugely traumatic experience, so you should prepare for the worst. The Walking Dead airs this Sunday at 9pm on AMC.
