Review: THUNDERBIRDS ARE GO Is a Surprisingly Awesome Adventure Series

One of the pleasures of coming to conventions like WonderCon is finding the hidden gems that you run into completely on accident. I got into room 151 early to make sure to catch the new the Voltron panel and was treated to the Thunderbirds Are Go panel, which turned out to be surprisingly awesome!

Thunderbirds was an interesting show that I would watch as a kid because it came on right after Doctor Who on Saturdays. When I say interesting, I mean completely kooky. The sets were elaborately done and the characters were puppets. This is the show that heavily inspired the film Team America World Police. I would watch it out of the pure fascination that a show like this existed.

Thunderbirds Are Go is a reboot of the original show that will available in early April on Amazon Prime. The elaborate sets are still there, and they were built by the talented folks at Weta, but the puppets have been replaced with CG characters, which, if you are a fan of the original show might sound lame, but it totally works. You can tell that there was a lot of time and care put into keeping the integrity of the original series while updating it for today’s audiences.

I was thrilled with the outcome of the show. They showed us the first episode, and I was left excited to see the rest of the season. The story follows the Tracy brothers who make up the team of International Rescue. They are responsible for the safety of the WORLD! Yeah, that is a lot of responsibility, but someone has to do it. With the balance of the world's safety in their hands, they are also on a mission to find out what happened to their father who has was killed years before.

The writing of the show is really well done. There was the appropriate amount of cheesy dialog that the kids will love, but it seemed like it was also smart enough to keep adults interested.

If you have Amazon Prime, then I thoroughly encourage you to check it out when it is released on April 4th. If you don’t have it like me, then this just adds to the incentive to get it.

The Joker's True Name Will Be Revealed in JUSTICE LEAGUE #50

In Justice League #42, Batman sat in Metron's Mobius Chair and asked it what the true name of The Joker was. It wasn't revealed at the time, but the reaction Batman had after finding out was interesting enough for fans to want to learn more. I included that little part of the comic below for you to check out. We didn't know if DC would let readers in on the secret at the time, but the big reveal is officially coming!

During WonderCon this past weekend Justice League writer Geoff Johns and artist Jason Fabok said that The Joker's real name will be revealed in Justice League #50, which is due out next month, and that it will tell the story behind it. They told audiences:

“The answer probably won’t be an answer people predict.”

Many fans consider The Killing Joke to be the closest thing to an origin story that we got of the Joker up until this point, but it looks like that's all going to change. As for what the Joker thinks about his past, he memorably said in The Killing Joke:

“I’m not exactly sure what happened. Sometimes I remember it one way, sometimes another… If I’m going to have a past, I prefer it to be multiple choice!”

Some teaser art was released that features The Joker as imagined by several different artists over the years. I'm not sure if The Joker's real name with drastically change anything, but Batman's reaction after learning it seems like it could be a big deal.

I'm kind of ok not knowing The Joker's identity. I like that it has been kept a mystery all of these years. The fact that we don't know who he is or have a clear background story is part of what makes him such a terrifying villain. Are you excited to finally learn Joker's true identity?

READY PLAYER ONE is Going to Be "Classic Steven Spielberg"

One of the big draws of Ernie Cline's Ready Player One novel is that the story is stuffed with references to '80s pop culture, and the main character relies on picking up on those references in order to try to solve puzzles that could lead him to ultimate victory. But the book tips its hat to dozens of different movies, games, TV shows, and music whose rights span multiple studios, so as soon as the film adaptation was announced, fans wondered if the filmmakers would be able to wrangle all of those elements into one movie.

/Film spoke with producer Donald DeLine at WonderCon this past weekend, and he has good news:

“We’ve had pretty darn good luck with getting all the various games and characters and brands to sign on,” DeLine said. “They were excited about it.”

So fans who were hoping to see some of the book's biggest moments come to life can breathe a sigh of relief. And according to DeLine, so can fans of director Steven Spielberg:

“[The movie is] classic Steven Spielberg, right in the center of the sweet spot of really his classic work, but with this whole new world now,” DeLine said. “There could be no one better to bring this to the screen.”

I'm still very interested to see if Spielberg decides to include references to things that he was directly involved with earlier in his career, like the DeLorean from Back to the Future (Spielberg executive produced BTTF). It'll also be fascinating to see how this movie stacks up against the iconic movies in the director's filmography.

Tye Sheridan, Olivia Cooke, Simon Pegg, and Ben Mendelsohn star, and the film arrives in theaters on March 30, 2018.

At once wildly original and stuffed with irresistible nostalgia, READY PLAYER ONE is a spectacularly genre-busting, ambitious, and charming debut—part quest novel, part love story, and part virtual space opera set in a universe where spell-slinging mages battle giant Japanese robots, entire planets are inspired by Blade Runner, and flying DeLoreans achieve light speed.
It’s the year 2044, and the real world is an ugly place.
Like most of humanity, Wade Watts escapes his grim surroundings by spending his waking hours jacked into the OASIS, a sprawling virtual utopia that lets you be anything you want to be, a place where you can live and play and fall in love on any of ten thousand planets.
And like most of humanity, Wade dreams of being the one to discover the ultimate lottery ticket that lies concealed within this virtual world. For somewhere inside this giant networked playground, OASIS creator James Halliday has hidden a series of fiendish puzzles that will yield massive fortune—and remarkable power—to whoever can unlock them.
For years, millions have struggled fruitlessly to attain this prize, knowing only that Halliday’s riddles are based in the pop culture he loved—that of the late twentieth century. And for years, millions have found in this quest another means of escape, retreating into happy, obsessive study of Halliday’s icons. Like many of his contemporaries, Wade is as comfortable debating the finer points of John Hughes’s oeuvre, playing Pac-Man, or reciting Devo lyrics as he is scrounging power to run his OASIS rig.
And then Wade stumbles upon the first puzzle.
Suddenly the whole world is watching, and thousands of competitors join the hunt—among them certain powerful players who are willing to commit very real murder to beat Wade to this prize. Now the only way for Wade to survive and preserve everything he knows is to win. But to do so, he may have to leave behind his oh-so-perfect virtual existence and face up to life—and love—in the real world he’s always been so desperate to escape.
A world at stake.
A quest for the ultimate prize.
Are you ready?

Zack Snyder Talks About The Ending of BATMAN V SUPERMAN

$

Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice broke some records at the box office this past weekend, despite taking a beating from critics (myself included). Fans couldn't help themselves — they had to go see the first movie that included Batman, Superman, and Wonder Woman on screen together in live-action, and I certainly don't blame them for ignoring the bad buzz and seeing it for themselves. I probably would have done the same thing.

Director Zack Snyder spoke with BuzzFeed about the movie's ending, and he talks in great detail about it. Be warned: there are massive spoilers ahead.

The climactic battle with Doomsday ends with the death of Superman, as he further impales himself on Doomsday's spike in order to drive the Kryptonite spear into the creature's chest. I'll keep my commentary to myself about how I didn't think a sacrificial moment like that worked very well given what we've seen from this version of the character so far, and just let Snyder take it from here:

"I felt it was inevitable. Even when we were working on Man of Steel, I was like, Gosh, what are we going to do with this guy? He’s a pretty tough cookie. He’s so mythic. Superman takes cosmic shifts to get him to move emotionally [and] that reinforces his mythic nature.
To me, [Superman’s death] solved so many great problems. I didn’t just want to put him in a volcano, or [have him] trapped by some, like, Promethean dilemma. I think it had to be Doomsday."

But the movie doesn't end with Superman's death. It ends with a shot of dirt floating above his coffin, indicating the resurrection to come (also a nice tie-in with Easter this past weekend). But Snyder struggled with whether or not he should include that final shot:

"I went back and forth with it, to be honest,” he said. “I do feel like it offers a teeny bit of hope for those people who need it. I feel like it’s obvious that we have to figure out a way to get him back, but I don’t know that everyone [knows that]. So I just wanted to give them that little jolt out of the theater, where they’re like, Oh shit! What’s going to happen?"

There are two ways of looking at that last shot. One is that it completely undercuts any emotional reaction that the audience might have had from seeing Superman die. The justification for it, then, is at least they're avoiding the total fake-out ending that fandom knows is a fake-out, because obviously Superman is going to come back for Justice League and beyond. Now they don't have to hide the fact that Henry Cavill is going to be on set for that movie, etc. I still don't think the death of Superman should have even been in this movie to begin with, but that's just me.

What did you think about the ending?

BATMAN V SUPERMAN Deleted Scene Will Make You Wonder

Just a few days after the premiere of Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, Warner Bros. decided to share one of the deleted scenes from the movie. Which was quite unexpected, I have to admit — it's a love-hate thing when studios do that!

The footage shows the psychotic Lex Luthor in front of a huge creature of some kind. The devices held by the creature appear to be Mother Boxes, which are closely linked to the supervillain Darkseid.

After seeing the video, there are certainly a few questions circling around my mind. Precisely, did I just see what Darkseid will look like in Justice League (I highly doubt that, but still)? Why was this scene deleted? Would it reveal too much or was it just unnecessary and entirely unrelated?

Don Cheadle Hints at War Machine's Fate in CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR

The trailers for Captain America: Civil War include a scene in which War Machine gets shot out of the sky and Iron Man holds his limp body in his arms. Naturally, this moment has caused many to think that the character will be one of the Avengers who are rumored to die in the film. Actor Don Cheadle is very aware of this, and he tells the NYDN (via ScreenCrush) that he's keeping up with the fan chatter about it online:

I’m on Twitter, so I’ve gotten a few people going, ‘Rhodey better not be dead, son. I’m going to be so mad.’ Or ‘I’m done with this thing if Rhodey’s dead.’ But that’s cool, I like that people get so upset about it. I like that in a Marvel movie people are able to evoke such emotion…It does look bad for Rhodey.

The thing about Marvel movies is that, much like the comics, death doesn't seem to be as permanent as it is for us in the real world. It started with Agent Coulson in The Avengers, who was brought back for Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., continued with the Nick Fury fake-out in The Winter Soldier, and even stretched to Loki in Thor: The Dark World before we saw he survived the events of that film and disguised himself as Odin. So even if Rhodey dies, which I'm not certain that he will, it seems likely we'll see him again at some point down the line.

I actually think that because he's featured in the trailer like that, it actually means that his death would be far too obvious to happen like that in Civil War. Why would the studio blow such a big moment like that? I think Rhodey gets roughed up, but doesn't die, and Marvel Studios just capitalized on the footage they had to add a sense of upped stakes and big consequences to the trailers.

What do you think? Is Rhodey going to make it out of Civil War alive?

Here's What Christopher Nolan Contributed to BATMAN V SUPERMAN

$

In the world of television, executive producers are often the showrunners and final decision makers of a show. They have a massive influence in shaping the final product before it makes its way to the screen. But with movies, executive producers are better known for dealing with money or using their names to lend credibility and prestige to a production. Christopher Nolan produced Man of Steel, but moved to an executive producer position for Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, and in a new interview with Collider, director Zack Snyder talks about Nolan's contributions to the movie. Spoilers for Dawn of Justice ahead.

I wrote this morning about how the ending of the movie incorporates Doomsday and the death of Superman, and Snyder had some interesting things to say about that in that interview. But it turns out that Nolan was at least partially responsible for that storyline making it into the final cut of this film:

“It was pretty early, and [Christopher] Nolan and I had long conversation about it, a really great, sort of philosophical conversation about it. He was really cool because he played an amazing devil’s advocate about why not to do it, and then in the end was like, ‘No you’re right, it’s better to do it.’
We had a version that we talked about where [Superman] just—this isn’t it, but where he got frozen and shot into space or something, so he’s kinda gone. Because one of the big things I wanted to make sure of was that as we went into Justice League, Bruce Wayne was the one who was gathering the Justice League. I thought it was really important to have Bruce Wayne be the samurai who goes and finds the other samurai, that to me was important. And with Superman around it’s kinda hard, because Superman’s Superman so it’s kinda hard for Bruce to be like, ‘Yeah I wanna put a Justice League together’. It’s like, ‘Okay, but maybe Superman should be doing that. You’re just a guy. You’re a cool guy, don’t get me wrong, but you’re just a guy.’”

So how did Warner Bros. react when they found out Snyder was going to kill off Superman?

“The studio was like, ‘What?’ And I’m like, ‘Yeah but, how about I call the movie Dawn of Justice?’, and they’re like ‘Okay, okay, I like what you’re doing, I see what you’re doing.’”

So now we know who to blame for that subtitle. What did you think about the film's ending? Do you think that Batman should be the one to unite the Justice League?

Sideshow Unveils Badass VOLTRON Figure at WonderCon!

This past weekend, I attended WonderCon in Los Angeles. One of my favorite things to do when I go to these big popular geek events is head over to the Sideshow Booth to look at their wonderful toys.

The first thing I noticed when I was walking up to the booth was this big ass figure of Voltron on display! As you can see, this thing is heavily inspired by the original cartoon and it seriously looks like one of the most badass figures they have created.

This is just a prototype and it's not fully complete yet, but it still looks crazy awesome with all of the details! I especially like the battle wear and tear on the robot extraordinaire. There's no word on when this will officially be released, but here are a few photos I took of the prototype at the convention.

How One of BATMAN V SUPERMAN's Cameos Will Eventually Pay Off

$
0
0

Spoilers ahead.

One of the most baffling moments in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice comes when Ezra Miller's Flash blasts through a time portal (most likely a boom tube) that appears in Bruce Wayne's office wearing a tech-heavy suit and yelling about how he was right about Superman, and how he has to find Lois Lane because she's the key to everything. His dialogue is tough to understand, he doesn't really look very much like the character, and — here's the most important thing — this scene has absolutely no bearing on anything else that happens throughout the rest of the movie. Since the film is so poorly edited, it's unclear whether this actually happens or if it's just another of Wayne's visions, but either way, it seems like it'd be pretty important, right? Maybe something worth mentioning if you're Batman? Not only does Ben Affleck's Dark Knight not talk to Lois (or anyone at all, even Alfred) about this, I don't think he says a single word to Lois in the entire movie.

Collider spoke with Deborah Snyder, a producer of BVS who also happens to be Zack's wife, about the cameo, and asked if the mentality of putting that in resembled how Vince Gilligan and his team used to work on Breaking Bad, where they'd write something without knowing the specifics of how they were going to get the characters out of that situation later on down the line:

“This was kind of the opposite [of Breaking Bad] because we had the script and it wasn’t in the script. As we started then we worked on our script, I think we were in the middle of shooting and we started working on the outline for the next movie and where they go, and Zack said, ‘Oh my God let’s add this moment that is gonna pay off down the road, and we’ll find out more information.’”

So no, you didn't miss anything in Batman v Superman about how this affected any of the characters in that story, because it had absolutely zero bearing on anything. It exists as pure setup for another movie. Has there ever been a scene in any movie that so blatantly sets up a later movie while simultaneously having no impact whatsoever on the current story being told? I can't think of one. I know people are ragging on me because I didn't like the movie, but this is a great example of what I didn't like about it: how the hell did this scene make the final cut? It's truly baffling.

Meanwhile, Deborah also spoke about the scene in BVS in which we see the photograph of Wonder Woman from 1918 and how that will connect to her upcoming solo movie:

“We’ve kind of done that a little bit with all the films as we’re developing them and as the scripts come, because it is this connected universe. For instance, the Wonder Woman daguerreotype photograph where we see her for the first time, we shot that and then we actually reshot it. We just shot it and then when they were working on the script [for Wonder Woman] we were like, ‘Wow what if we put in the script the actual taking of the photograph?’ But it’s totally different people because we shot it on our set, so when [Wonder Woman director] Patty [Jenkins] was doing camera tests, we were back and forth because we were prepping that movie and editing and starting Justice League. On one of the days we just got the group together, brought over—because it’s shot on these beautiful glass plates—we brought Steven over, who is a friend of Zack’s from Arts Center, he’s a professor over there and he shoots this beautiful glass plate photography, and we shot it with all the cast. So sometimes it just kind of happens and you kind of change gears, and you realize that there might be an opportunity as you’re working on your process.”

So it sounds like we'll see Wonder Woman and her posse line up and pose for that photo next year. And maybe we'll see what makes The Flash go back in time and talk to Bruce Wayne in 2017's Justice League, or we might have to wait until the speedster gets his own solo movie in 2018. Great.

Jonah Hex is Looking Badass in DC's LEGENDS OF TOMORROW Extended Preview

I'm not a big fan of DC's Legends of Tomorrow. The show is just really rough around the edges and it hasn't been able to grab me. I was extremely excited about this show but it lost me. However, I won't be missing out on the episode that will feature Jonah Hex because I'm a fan of that character.

The CW has released an extended preview for the upcoming episodes of the series, and Jonah Hex is looking awesome! The character is being played by Johnathon Schaech (That Thing You Do!, Quantico, Quarantine) and he looks a lot more like the comic book version of the character than Josh Brolin's version from the live-action film. New episodes of Legends of Tomorrow will start airing on Thursday, March 31st on The CW.

Set Photos of Zoe Saldana as Gamora From GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY VOL. 2

Zoe Saldana recently shared a couple of personal photos of herself in full makeup and costume as Gamora from the set of James Gunn's Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. I think it's great that the studios are allowing the cast and crew to share certain things. They obviously aren't going to be dropping any major details or spoilers, but this is still stuff that is enough to get fans like myself excited for what they have in store for us.

The first image features her winking at the camera and the second includes her hanging out with her kids in costume, which is pretty cool. As far as her look goes, as you'd expect, she pretty much looks like she did in the first movie.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 also stars Chris Pratt (Star-Lord), Dave Bautista (Drax), Bradley Cooper (Rocket Raccoon), Vin Diesel (Groot), Karen Gillan (Nebula), Sean Gunn (Kraglin), with Pom Klementieff (Mantis), and Michael Rooker (Yondu) and Kurt Russell, who is most likely playing Star-Lord's dad.

Daisy Ridley came out of nowhere to completely dominate Star Wars: The Force Awakens, and she delivered a superstar performance with an insane amount of pressure on her shoulders. She was my favorite of the new characters by far, and she blew audiences away with her physicality, indomitable spirit, and ability to genuinely emote and make us feel for the character of Rey.

But we obviously aren't the only ones she impressed. She first caught the eye of the film's casting directors and then she impressed writer/director J.J. Abrams in a big way with her audition, in which he asked her to read the scene where Kylo Ren tries to read her mind with The Force. BuzzFeed has a small section of the video, which you can see here.

If you dug that, check out this quick snippet of John Boyega's audition as Finn. Both of these clips will be available as part of the bonus features of the film's home video release. Star Wars: The Force Awakens hits Digital HD on April 1st and Blu-ray/DVD on April 5th.
