Stephen King Reveals His Biggest Issue With Stanley Kubrick’s THE SHINING

$

It’s no secret that Stephen King passionately hates Stanley Kubrick’s version of The Shining. As much as I love the film, Kubrick really did take a lot of liberties in changing the story and making it his own.

I’m a huge fan of both the movie and the book, and I like each one for what they are. But King thinks Kubrick completely missed the mark. In an interview with Deadline, King reveals his biggest problem with the film, and it involved the main character, Jake Torrance.

“The character of Jack Torrance has no arc in that movie. Absolutely no arc at all. When we first see Jack Nicholson, he’s in the office of Mr. Ullman, the manager of the hotel, and you know, then, he’s crazy as a shit house rat. All he does is get crazier. In the book, he’s a guy who’s struggling with his sanity and finally loses it. To me, that’s a tragedy. In the movie, there’s no tragedy because there’s no real change.”

King is right. You can’t argue with that, and I agree with him on that issue. The author goes on to share an experience talking with Kubrick about the story before he made the movie:

“I talked to Stanley on the phone before he started and I remember I could feel him reaching, trying to find his way into the books, and he said, ‘Well, don’t you find that all ghost stories are optimistic, don’t you think so? Because it means that the presupposition is that if there are ghosts, there’s an afterlife, we don’t just die, we go on.’ And I said, ‘Mr. Kubrick, what about hell?’ There was a long pause at the other end and he said in a very stiff voice, I don’t believe in hell.’ And I said, ‘Well, OK, you don’t, but my feeling is that if there are ghosts, they’re as likely to be maligned as they are to be ‘come into the light.’ You remember the movie with Patrick Swayze, Ghost? There was a feeling there that ghosts are really kind of on our side, but it’s just as likely that the experience of dying has driven some of them mad.”

He goes on to admit that The Shining was a beautifully shot film, but explains that there’s no substance to it, saying:

“I think The Shining is a beautiful film and it looks terrific and as I’ve said before, it’s like a big, beautiful Cadillac with no engine inside it. In that sense, when it opened, a lot of the reviews weren’t very favorable and I was one of those reviewers. I kept my mouth shut at the time, but I didn’t care for it much.”

I personally appreciate each artist's vision of the story, they are both effective in what they do, but if I had to choose one being better than the other, I would have to go with King’s book. What do you think about King’s comments? If you had to choose one over the other which would it be?

The Guitar Destroyed in THE HATEFUL EIGHT Was Actually on Loan From a Museum

After seeing their 146-year-old Martin guitar destroyed on screen by Kurt Russell in The Hateful Eight, C.F. Martin and Co. is pissed. Reverb says museum director Dick Boak, who loaned the guitar to Quentin Tarantino and crew was originally told the guitar was destroyed due to an "on set accident." Now having seen the film, Boak is more upset about how the "accident" came to be.

“We assumed that a scaffolding or something fell on it. We understand that things happen, but at the same time we can’t take this lightly. All this about the guitar being smashed being written into the script and that somebody just didn’t tell the actor, this is all new information to us. We didn’t know anything about the script or Kurt Russell not being told that it was a priceless, irreplaceable artifact from the Martin Museum.”

Money has been paid, but Boak says the loss is immeasurable. It isn't about the money, it's about the meaning of history, and of a guitar being kept in great condition for that long. The time and effort on upkeep alone makes it priceless.

I don't think Boak is in the wrong for being upset, and I do agree the circumstances are suspect. We hear on set stories all the time of how something was changed to elicit a real response from the actors, and given the scene and circumstance... I wouldn't be surprised if someone "forgot" to tell Russell it wasn't a prop.

I really hope that's not the case, given that Quentin Tarantino is such an advocate for the preservation of classic films and what-not. It would be really dickish to demand respect for the old ways of your genre while ignoring others.

There's an INDIANA JONES Easter Egg in STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS

Ever since Star Wars: The Force Awakens was released, people have been pointing out all kinds of Easter eggs and references from the film. You might think you already know them all, but new ones seem to keep popping up!

The latest Easter egg that has been revealed in the movie involves Indiana Jones. The information comes from sound designer David Acord during an interview with Nerdist. He explains that during the scene where Han Solo and Chewbacca are running down the hall away from by the rolling monstrous rathtar, he threw in a sound effect from Indiana Jones. He says:

"Then there’s some other cool things like when the rathtar is rolling down the hallway after Han and Chewie, I put in the sound of Ben Burtt’s boulder roll sound from Raiders of the Lost Ark when the boulder is chasing Indy."

So next time you watch the movie, listen closely because you'll be able to hear the sound of the boulder from Raiders of the Lost Ark. I've gotta say, that's a pretty cool little addition that I would have never caught had someone like Acord not mentioned it. I thought that was a fun piece of information that some of you fans might appreciate.

Official Trailer For DC's Animated JUSTICE LEAGUE VS. TEEN TITANS

$

I've been waiting forever for this. We finally get a first full length trailer for Justice League Vs. Teen Titans! Obviously, this is not the same animated team you saw in Bruce Timm's early-aughts classic. Damian Wayne is now Robin, Starfire and Cyborg appear to be from the original team, and Raven and Beast Boy look as though they are rebooted. If you've been following the Teen Titans of New 52, you likely know better than I do.

All that aside, it's cool to see that the Teen Titans are going to be the protagonists, as I thought it would be the other way around. Also, the inclusion of Trigon is great. Watch and reminisce about the old series below.

Video Breaks Down Every Batman Vs. Superman Fight Ever

If you've ever wanted to know who's come out on top in every encounter Batman and Superman have ever fought, TheimaginaryAxis has an answer. It's probably not the answer you're looking for, and frankly I think carries a bit of a bias. While I understand the author and the point he's trying to make...using Batman's resourcefulness and tactics and saying those victories are non applicable is basically saying, "Batman doesn't win because he doesn't use his powers." WELL NO S*** BATMAN DOESN'T HAVE POWERS! As my dad says, "If it's not sanctioned there are no rules."

Maybe I'm just salty. I think Batman has a lot more victories than this gives him credit for.

Zack Snyder Says If You Read the Comics You Know He Didn't Change Superman

$

The director of Man of Steel and the upcoming Batman v Superman is on the offensive after years of criticism from fans. Comicbook is reporting that Zack Snyder shot back in the Hall of Justice podcast saying that fans who read comics know that Superman hasn't changed...

“People are always like, ‘You changed Superman’...If you’re a comic book fan, you know that I didn’t change Superman. If you know the true canon, you know that I didn’t change Superman. If you’re a fan of the old movies, yeah I changed him a bit. That's the difference. I'm a bit of a comic book fan and I always default to the true canon. Not the cinematic canon that sort of, that in my opinion, plays fast and loose with the rules. And so, I feel like I tried to create a Superman that would set a tone for the world.”

That's an incredibly bold statement to make in the face of comic book fans. Snyder did more than nix the red underwear. He made The Man of Steel an Alaskan Crab Fisherman, had him destroy half a city, and did the exact opposite of "kneeling before Zod."

Snyder has definitely changed Superman more than a little. Not saying I disagree with it! In fact I'm in the camp that still defends the film (minus the product placement). To say, however, that "true" fans know you changed very little...well, that's just banking on a small percentage of hardcore comic fans being too small of a majority to be heard. It's just not true in my opinion.

Top 10 Closing Movie Shots of All Time

Last month we shared a Top 10 video with you listing the all-time best opening shots in movies. Now today, we have a new video from CineFix that gives us a Top 10 list of the best closing shots of all time.

The end of a movie ties the whole story together. It completes the journey of the characters we've spent our time watching. "The final moments of a movie can make things feel complete, leave you wanting more, and bring out deep emotions."

I love the feeling I get when there's a great ending to a film. Below the video I've included the entire list that you can go through in case you are in a place where you can't watch it. All of the choices that CineFix made here are fantastic.

Symbolic - 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968)
Kubrick set out to avoid “intellectual verbalization,” opting instead to try to speak directly to the subconscious.

Thematic - A Serious Man (2009)
A whirlwind of biblical proportions, a fate unknown, and the impending promise of more punishment.

Visually Stunning - The Piano (1993)
The main character, hanging lifeless, attached to her sunken piano in a fantasy of her aborted suicide that she claims “lulls her to sleep.”

Visually Inventive - Gangs of New York (2002)
From mid-19th century Manhattan to Brooklyn Bridge to Empire State to the World Trade, this multilayered shot perfectly visualizes the growth of New York and a city's relationship with the history upon which it is built.

Tied Up In a Bow w. a Cherry on Top - Fight Club (1999)
It's the kind of fairytale ending that every little boy and girl dreams about, hand in hand with the chain-smoking love of their life that they've finally won over from their other personality, brain dripping out through a bullethole in the back of their head watching the bastions of American Capitalism crumble to the ground in the sexiest domestic terror attack ever.

Cliffhanger/Twist - Inception (2010)
The spinning top, a single shot that inspires this much deep analysis of character plot and theme along with the underlying philosophies and mythologies of the film is automatically a massive success.

Perfectly Summarizes - The Searchers (1956)
After every major relationship is wrapped up happily, it ends on John Wayne as Ethan, without a place to come home to, a discarded tool of a more violent time, the door closing on him just like it did Kay.

Emotionally Haunting - Stalker (1979)
It defies an easily verbalized explanation. The psychokinesis might be a half-granted wish. The roar of the train is probably the future rushing towards us. But - again - does it really matter?

Freeze Frame - The 400 Blows (1959)
The definition of open-ended, Antoine's look is basically the cinematic version of the Mona Lisa Smile. Is he happy? Hopeful? Uncertain? Disillusioned? Is he paralyzed and trapped, or condemning the society that failed him? The look is anything and everything at once, meaning something new to everyone.

Iconic - Casablanca (1942)
From Medium Close to Extreme Wide, there's no better way to say goodbye to a well-loved character and story.

MACGYVER Movie in Development at Lionsgate

I'm surprised it's taken Hollywood this long to get around to making a movie based on the classic TV series MacGyver. While CBS and James Wan are planning a remake of the show, Lionsgate is moving forward with plans to make a movie.

The news comes from Lionsgate CEO Jon Feltheimer, and he also reveals that the movie will be produced by series creator Lee David Zlotoff and Neal Moritz, who is the producer of the Fast and Furious franchise.

MacGyver aired on ABC from 1985 to 1992 and it starred Richard Dean Anderson as secret agent Angus MacGyver. He worked for the Department of External Services and one of his main talents was his ability to solve complex problems in intense situations with ordinary items that he randomly had access to.

A MacGyver movie could be a lot of fun, especially if it gets a solid team of talent on board to develop it. There's no other information on project, other than what we have here, but we'll keep you updated on any new developments.

With these awesomely ridiculous Predator-themed helmets, Schwarzenegger's advice ("Get to da choppah!") takes on a whole new meaning: instead of referring to a helicopter, just pretend he's talking about a motorcycle. (People still call those "choppers" too, right?)

Coincidentally, I'm wearing a Predator T-shirt right now. This seems like the perfect piece of gear for those of you who have a love for this movie and want to be seen cruising down the street with alien dreadlocks whipping in the wind. Junkie XL's First Track Revealed From BATMAN V SUPERMAN Score...and It's Damn Good

EDIT: I originally said Hans Zimmer composed this track, but he actually only worked on the Superman side of the score for this film. He farmed out the Batman side of things to Junkie XL. My bad.

I'm a soundtrack nerd, and I'm a big fan of what Hans Zimmer has done for the DC film franchises. That being said, I think JUNKIE XL's track from Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice is more Batman than Zimmer could've done! You can feel the aggression just melting out of the speakers on this one! Take a listen to "Men Are Still Good (The Batman Suite)" and tell me you don't agree!

Ethan Hawke Could Reprise His Role in New TRAINING DAY TV Series

$

0

As you may have already heard, Antoine Fuqua's incredible 2001 film Training Day is set to be adapted into a TV series for CBS. According to Deadline, the series could actually be a sequel to the film and focus on the surviving main characters from the movie, including Ethan Hawke's character Jake Hoyt.

According to the report, producer Jerry Bruckheimer wants to bring Hawke back to reprise his role, and the actor has apparently already been approached by the studio. There's no word on if this is actually going to happen or not, but the two parties are in talks with each other and Hawke has expressed interested in being involved.

If Hawke actually did jump on board the series, it would be for a recurring supporting role. Apparently when the show was in the early stages of development, they wanted Hawke to be the main star. I imagine he wouldn't have the time to commit to a project like that, as he's such a busy guy who always seems to be involved with some kind of film project.

The series is set fifteen years after the events of the movie and it centers on an "idealistic young African-American police officer, Kyle, who is given an assignment by the Deputy Chief to go undercover with an elite squad of the LAPD and take down a morally ambiguous Caucasian detective, gaining the trust of the seasoned cop by becoming his new partner."

The report goes on to say that there were two versions of the pilot script. "In one, the corrupt older detective is Jake Hoyt. It was written to gauge Hawke’s interest in toplining the series." He's not interested in toplining the series, though. The alternative version of the script was the one that got the pilot greenlight. Deadline explains:

"In it, the rogue cop is a new character, Frank, while the Deputy Chief is Hoyt. I hear the way the Deputy Chief character was conceived, it involves more regular presence on the show, so the two sides are currently far apart. But talks continue, and the role is still earmarked for Hawke."

The pilot for the series was written by Will Beall (Gangster Squad) and it will be directed by Fuqua. Hawke has a strong relationship with Fuqua, so there's a good chance that we might actually see him join the show. I hope he does — it would be great to see him reprise his role!

INDEPENDENCE DAY: RETURN OF THE '90s Pits Humanity Against Toys

Nostalgia for the '90s is in full swing, as evidenced by a ton of TV show revivals and movie sequels and reboots being greenlit left and right. The upcoming Independence Day: Resurgence is one of those properties, picking up twenty years after the events of the 1996 original. But YouTuber Dane Boe, using some pretty awesome visual effects wizardry, reworked the trailer for Resurgence into Independence Day: Return of the '90s, a delightfully ridiculous premise that sees stars Jeff Goldblum and Bill Pullman battling '90s-centric toys like Tickle Me Elmos and Furbies. It doesn't get much more '90s than a Troll riding on an N64 controller, and that's another threat to the planet on display here. Check it out:

Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Channing Tatum Unite For Musical Comedy

$

Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Channing Tatum have been friends for a long time, and they've wanted to make a musical comedy together for a while now. They once had an idea to star in a remake of the classic Frank Sinatra/Marlon Brando musical Guys and Dolls, but it seems like they've moved away from that notion in recent years and have finally found something similar to scratch that itch.

THR reports that the duo — who have worked together on films like Havoc and Stop-Loss — will unite for an "R-rated musical comedy featuring two pilots on a misadventure." Gordon-Levitt and writer Michael Bacall (21 Jump Street, Scott Pilgrim vs. The World) came up with the idea together, and Bacall is going to write the screenplay. Tatum and Gordon-Levitt will produce alongside Marc Platt, who turned Wicked into a smash hit on Broadway, and Universal will distribute the still-untitled project.

Tatum, of course, has plenty of dancing experience from the Step Up and Magic Mike movies, and he also sang for the first time in Hail, Caesar!, which includes a spectacular '50s-style musical number that was my favorite part of the film. JGL sings and dances all the time, and had his own show-stopping moment in his monologue when he hosted SNL a little while back. I can't wait to see what these guys do together.

Video Essay Explores SICARIO's Morality (or Lack Thereof)

Denis Villeneuve's cartel thriller Sicario is a tense, ruthless movie that was one of the most fascinating films of last year. A new video essay from the team at Digging Deeper takes a deep dive into the film's symbolism, analyzing its themes through the use of color and transparency. I only saw the film once in theaters and didn't make a lot of these connections myself the first time through, but watching this essay has increased my respect for it even more. Check out my review and watch the video essay below, but beware of spoilers in the video:
