I’ve got another fun illustration for you to check out today created by Marco D’Alfonso. The piece is called “Mo Money Mo Merc’n” and it features Deadpool and Boba Fett on what looks like a Pulp Fiction-inspired adventure. It’s a shame that this team up will never happen for real.

Sam Raimi in Talks to Direct A PROPHET Remake For Sony Pictures

I've been wondering what Sam Raimi's next big movie project would be, and now it looks like he's getting ready to make his move on one. Variety is reporting that the Evil Dead director is in talks to direct a remake of A Prophet for Sony Pictures.

If Raimi takes the gig, this will be a very different kind of project for him. The original film follows an Arab man who is sent to a French prison and soon becomes a Mafia kingpin among the prisoners.

The script for the remake was written by Dennis Lehane (Shutter Island), and Neal H. Moritz is attached to produce. The studio is looking to put the project on the fast track to production, and they hope to start shooting this summer. On top of trying to get Raimi on board to direct, the studio is also looking to cast someone in the lead role.

Raimi most recently worked as a director and producer on the Evil Dead series on Starz. If he take this directing gig it will be his first feature film since Oz, The Great and Powerful. I think this would be a solid project for him to take on, and I'd be interested to see what he does with it, especially since it's a completely different genre than we're used to seeing him work in.

Every Time R2-D2 Saves The Day in STAR WARS — Supercut

Thanks to IGN, we have a wonderful Star Wars video supercut that features every time the loveable droid R2-D2 has saved the day. It's a good thing this droid exists! The caption that came with the video says:

Luke, Han, and Leia would have been dead long ago if it weren’t for this little droid.

As you'll see, without R2, so many things in the Star Wars saga could have gone horribly wrong.

LABYRINTH Is Getting a Remake by GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY Co-Writer

Sheesh. Hollywood has no shame. Less than two weeks after David Bowie passed away it's been announced that Jim Henson's classic 1986 fantasy film Labyrinth is getting the remake treatment. You'd think they would honor Bowie by NOT remaking this movie, instead they are going to attempt to cash in on it.

According to THR, Guardians of the Galaxy co-writer Nicole Perlman will be writing the script for the film. The original movie starred Jennifer Connelly, who set out on an adventure in a fantastical maze to save her younger brother, who was kidnapped by the Goblin King played by Bowie.

The movie is set up at Tri-Star Pictures which has teamed up with The Jim Henson Co. to bring this story to the big screen... again. There's no word what the new take on this story will be, but I imagine it won't be too far off from what we saw in the original.

When the original film was first released it bombed at the box-office, but over the years, it has become a beloved cult classic. Labyrinth was the last film that Henson directed, it was written by Monty Python's Terry Jones, and George Lucas was an executive producer. Yeah, good luck recreating that magic!

MORRIS FROM AMERICA Is an Awkward Cross-Cultural Coming of Age Film - Sundance Review

morris-from-america-is-an-awkward-cross-culture-coming-of-age-film-sundance-review

Morris From America is an adolescent coming of age story that centers around a 13-year-old African-American boy named Morris. Morris is going through that awkward puberty stage in life and is in the process of trying to figure out who he is. We've all gone through this stage of life in our own way, but Morris is definitely a unique individual who is faced with some unique challenges.

The thing about Morris is that as he's trying to navigate through life during a transitional period in Heidelberg, Germany, where his father works as a soccer coach. Morris is taking German lessons with a protective college student who encourages him to spend time at the local youth center so that he can make friends and practice his language skills.

This leads to some major complications. It's at this youth center that he starts crushing on a local girl, and he's looking to impress her any way that he can. It doesn't help that she's kind of a bad girl who pushes him to do things he's not comfortable doing. This is what sparks his journey of self-discovery.

There's very little diversity in the town that he lives in, and he is put in awkward situations in which he gets picked on and accused for things because of the color of his skin. It's hard watching him have to go through this stuff, and there are some cringe-worthy moments where you really feel for him. The film wonderfully captures the alienated and confused feelings that Morris is having throughout the story.

I think the core of the movie, though, is the relationship between Morris and his father. Morris' mom has passed away and his dad is doing the best he can to take care of Morris and raise him right. So his dad is faced with his own challenges as Morris is going through his personal issues that he's not comfortable talking with anyone about. Hell, at one point the kid has sex with a pillow.

The movie has a humorous hip-hop kind of flow to it. The tone of the film is set perfectly when his dad is trying to introduce him to the kind of hip-hop music that he grew up with. Morris isn't impressed, though. He has his own aspirations of being a hip-hop artist, and it's one of those things that grows within him throughout the story.

Morris is played by YouTube star Markees Christmas, who does a fantastic job carrying this film on his shoulders. That's not an easy thing to do for such a young kid. His dad is played by Craig Robinson, and this role shows us a different side of the actor who is mostly known for his comedy. Don't get me wrong, he is funny in the movie, but he also has some heartfelt and dramatic moments that I don't think we've really seen from him before.

The movie was written and directed by Chad Hartigan, and it turned out to be a charming cross-cultural kind of story, and the whole time you are rooting for Morris. I have no idea if this movie will be released in theaters, but it's sure to end up on Netflix at some point. When it does, make sure to check it out. I think many of you will enjoy it.

Gunslinger Spawn and Western Ghost Rider Team Up in Awesome Illustration

gunslinger-spawn-and-western-ghost-rider-team-up-in-awesome-illustration

I freakin’ love this crossover illustration that teams up Gunslinger Spawn and Western Ghost Rider. This is the product of a team of artists that consists of Jimbo Salgado (Pencils), Shandra "Raziel Ælex Xion" (Inks), Trinity Mathews (Flats), and Matt James (Colors).

I would absolutely love to see these two characters team up in a live-action film or animated series. This is an older piece of art, but it was recently posted by Matt James with his touch on Art Station, and it’s one of those things I saw that I had to share just in case you’ve never seen it.

Elektra is a Sociopath in DAREDEVIL Season 2

When it comes to Daredevil Season 2 we’ve mostly heard about The Punisher and what he’ll be bringing to Hell’s Kitchen in the next chapter of Daredevil’s story. Elektra is also set to play a big role in the show, but the interest in her character doesn’t seem as high as Punisher.

In the comics, Elektra is a deadly assassin and one of Daredevil’s main love interests. During her run, she has been both a villain and an ally. What version of the character will we see in the upcoming series? Well, actress Elodie Yung sheds some light on her character during a recent interview at the Television Critics Association winter press tour. She explains:

"[W]hat I tried to capture by reading the comics is I wanted to keep the coldness and we had a conversation - that Elektra has - and we conversations at length with Doug [Petrie] and Marco [Ramirez] (showrunners of Daredevil).
"We think Elektra is, kind of, a sociopath, you know? This world is a game for me - it’s like a chess game - and what motivates her is what she wants. She will use anything she needs to use to get to her goal and if she needs to kill people, she would, you know? She has this coldness and this sociopath in her and I tried to keep that, really."

It may sound like there is going to be a heavy villainous tone to her character in the series, but maybe not completely. The actress goes on to say that they are also playing with Elektra’s different layers.

"[O]n the other hand, we wanted to create a character with different layers and, I think, Elektra isn’t a bad person, she’s not a good person. She’s a person with different traits, with layers and she’s seeking for who she is, so really, in this season, there’s an arc to her story and, hopefully, she will find out who she is really by the end of it."

We also learn that the character's costume will come together organically. In an interview with showrunner Doug Petrie, he said:

"We love the comics - we're fans - but, we wanted Elektra's costume to be reasonable for a martial artist and she's also a little bit of a stylist. There's definitely a costume, but it needs to happen organically like we saw on Daredevil."

We’ll get to see this new version of Elektra in action when Daredevil hits Netflix on March 18th. I have no doubt that it will be a better version than the one Jennifer Garner gave us.

Here’s the synopsis for the second season of Daredevil:

Just when Matt thinks he is bringing order back to the city, new forces are rising in Hell’s Kitchen. Now the Man Without Fear must take on a new adversary in Frank Castle and face an old flame – Elektra Natchios. Bigger problems emerge when Frank Castle, a man looking for vengeance, is reborn as The Punisher, a man who takes justice into his own hands in Matt’s neighborhood. Meanwhile, Matt must balance his duty to his community as a lawyer and his dangerous life as the Devil of Hell’s Kitchen, facing a life-altering choice that forces him to truly understand what it means to be a hero.

It’s been a while since I saw an awesome piece of fan art for the 1980s classic The Goonies. This fan poster is called “Rocky Road” and it was created by an artist named Florey as a commission. There are two posters that were created, and I included the information on each one below.

24″ X 36″ 8 colour regular edition screen print with metallic inks. Private commission, NFS.
23″ X 35″ 7 colour laser cut “Treasure Map” variant edition. Contains a subtle cartography treasure map varnish layer laser cut to the shape of One Eyed Willy’s map from the movie.

Below you’ll find a video that shows the treasure map layer being layered into the print.

McDonald's Gets Chocolate-Covered French Fries in Japan!

McChocolate Potatoes! That’s what McDonald's is calling these chocolate covered french fries that they’re selling in Japan. The fries are drizzled with both white and milk chocolate. This could be one of the greatest things ever, or it could be absolutely disgusting. All I know is that I want to try them!

The item will hit Japanese stores on January 26th, and they will only be around until mid-February. It will cost patrons 50 cents to upgrade your fries to chocolaty greatness. This is what the official site explains, via Google Translate:

“The salty of the potato, the taste of surprise sweetness of the chocolate source is applied, Please enjoy.”

Maybe one day McDonald's will be brave enough to try these out in the States so that people like myself can give them try!

Shit! Just! Got! Real! in Taika Waititi's HUNT FOR THE WILDERPEOPLE - Sundance Review

$

0

Taika Waititi is one hell of a great filmmaker who makes amazingly funny films! I've enjoyed all of the films that he's made in the past, which is why I was so excited to see his new project, Hunt for the Wilderpeople. If you've enjoyed any of his previous work as well such as Eagle Vs. Shark, Boy, and What We Do In Shadows, you're going to love this movie because it's easily the best one that he's made so far! It's also the best movie I've seen at Sundance!

There's always a small handful of films that I see at the film festival that blow my mind and wow me. Hunt For the Wilderpeople, did that for me this year, and it's one I'll be recommending and forcing people to see when it's eventually released.

The story follows an overweight trouble-maker named Ricky Baker (Julian Dennison), who has had a long road through the foster care system in New Zealand. His been labled a bad egg, and at the start of the film he's dropped by social services at a small home in the middle of the New Zealand bush where a woman and her husband have agreed to take him in and try to make things work with him. This is a fresh start for Ricky, and it takes him down an incredible coming-of-age life adventure that he'll never forget.

I know this may sound like this could be a heavy drama, and it does have some very serious and dramatic moments, but at the same time it's absolutely hilarious! The theater was rolling with laughter all through the film, but it was also mixed with some heartfelt tears.

Ricky has basically given up on the system that he's found himself trapped in, and at first he doesn't want to be with this new family. The woman who takes him really embraces the boy and makes him feel at home. He eventually warms up to her, but her husband Hec (Sam Neill) is less enthusiastic about having the boy live with them. He's more of a hardened wilderness man who let the boy in just so that his wife could help him.

There is a series of events that lead to Ricky and Hec embarking on a journey together through the New Zealand wilderness as they are being hunted down by social services and the police. I won't tell you why or what happens along the way because I want to keep all of the greatest parts of the film a surprise. I will say, though, that the relationship and bond between Ricky and Hec grows stronger as they are on this adventure together.

This is a brilliantly written and directed film that I know for a fact audiences will love. Waititi has reached a new level of excellence in his filmmaking career with this movie. All of the characters are amazingly wonderful and likable and you can't help but fall in love with them. It doesn't hurt the the actors cast as these characters amazingly bring them to life for the audiences enjoyment.

Hunt for the Wilderpeople has got everything you want in a movie. Action, adventure, comedy, drama, danger, and excitement. I really couldn't have asked for anything more from this movie. In my mind it was a perfect film.

Watching this got me even more excited for what Waititi will bring to Marvel's Thor: Ragnarok. We've heard a lot about how that movie will be a buddy adventure film, and that's exactly what this movie was.

This is seriously a special film that begs to be seen. This is going to get a theatrical release, and when it is released, make sure you watch it! It will make your life a little better and happier. I know it's still early in 2016, but I think this movie will still be on my list of favorite films of the year by the time 2016 ends.

On a side note... the title of the post, "Shit! Just! Got! Real!" is a line of dialogue from the film that when heard in context is absolutely amazing.

Colin Farrell Checks into the Hilton from Hell in THE LOBSTER - Sundance Review

colin-farrell-checks-into-the-hilton-from-hell-in-the-lobster-sundance-review

The Lobster is an extra dark comedy set in a dystopian near future where being single is against the rules. Recently single David (played by Colin Farrell) checks into a hotel in which he must find a partner in 45 days or he'll get turned into an animal of his choosing (Guess which one he picks).

While there, he befriends two outcasts: a man with a lisp (John C. Reilly) and a man with a limp (Ben Whishaw). Despite the myriad activities that emphasize how much it sucks to be single, David appears unmotivated in his quest for love and as the 45 days quickly draws to an end, he decides to pursue a woman with psychopathic apathy.

As a result, disaster strikes, and David is forced to flee into the woods where he and other fugitive loners are being hunted by the hotel residents.

In the woods, the rules are completely opposite of those in the hotel, proving it's impossible to find love when you're looking for it, but when you're not looking, love finds you.

This film covers some heavy subjects with an offhand humor that makes it feel light-hearted, despite the moody cinematography. I would have loved to see this as a series with more time dedicated to each location and character.  It would have been nice to be able to explore this universe in a little more depth; some of the scenes felt cut short simply because so much happens in just two hours. It was just such a unique concept, I wanted to see more, which, I guess, is preferable to the alternative.

First Exciting TV Spot for WARCRAFT

Legendary Pictures has unleashed the first adrenaline-fueled TV spot for Duncan Jones' Warcraft. I'm 100% on board with this movie. Everything that has been released for it looks spectacular. I know not everyone agrees with me on that, but Jones is a great storyteller and director, and I believe he's going to give fans and audiences an incredibly epic moviegoing experience.

In Warcraft, based on the Blizzard Entertianment’s epic video game series, the peaceful realm of Azeroth stands on the brink of war as its civilization faces a fearsome race of invaders: Orc warriors fleeing their dying home to colonize another. As a portal opens to connect the two worlds, one army faces destruction and the other faces extinction. From opposing sides, two heroes are set on a collision course that will decide the fate of their family, their people and their home.

Warcraft will invade theaters on June 10th! Enjoy the new TV Spot.

New International TV Spot for SUICIDE SQUAD

For those of you who are excited about David Ayer’s Suicide Squad, we’ve got a new international trailer to check out. I’ve freakin’ loved everything I’ve seen from this movie so far. Some people are still a little skeptical and others have not liked the footage that has been released in the trailers so far. To those of you who fall into the category of people, I respect your opinion, but I also think you're crazy. I believe this thing is going to end up being one of the most entertaining films of 2016! I’m really rooting for this one, and hopefully the full film is as awesome as it looks.

It feels good to be bad… Assemble a team of the world’s most dangerous, incarcerated Super Villains, provide them with the most powerful arsenal at the government’s disposal, and send them off on a mission to defeat an enigmatic, insuperable entity. U.S. intelligence officer Amanda Waller has determined only a secretly convened group of disparate, despicable individuals with next to nothing to lose will do. However, once they realize they weren’t picked to succeed but chosen for their patent culpability when they inevitably fail, will the Suicide Squad resolve to die trying, or decide it’s every man for himself?

Suicide Squad hits theater on August 5th!

Wonder Woman is a 5000 Year Old Retired Superhero in BATMAN V SUPERMAN

$

Some interesting new details have surfaced regarding Wonder Woman in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. During a recent interview with Empire Magazine, director Zack Snyder spoke about including the character in the film and Gal Gadot gave us some intel on the character’s background. Snyder explained:

"It was incredibly organic how Wonder Woman came into the story. The whole concept came of, 'Let's not save anything. Let's try it all.' Then Wonder Woman's entrance made us realize we were much closer to the Justice League than we thought. We realized we were one movie away."

The report goes on to reveal that when we catch up with Wonder Woman in the movie, she is over 5000 years old and that she's no longer a superhero. She obviously comes out of retirement in Batman v Superman to help them battle a new threat of evil that rises. When asked why her character retired, Gadot said:

"Because she's seen it all, she has seen what humans can do, so it was very hard for her to come back and fight.”

She also talked about how Wonder Woman and Diana are different from each other:

"They have the same attitude. Although when she is Diana she tries to blend in, she is not too outgoing. I don't want people to think she is perfect. She can be naughty."

Executive producer Deborah Snyder expanded on that and shed some new light on what else we can expect to see from the character in the DCEU:

"Her sexuality is part of her power, but she is also a feminist icon. Gender has been a hot topic, so it is very timely to bring her back. The way we have approached it, especially in the stand alone movie, that is definitely there. Looking back and doing an origin story - and it is a period piece - see the role of women through history. There is a great source of humour in that now. It is so unbelievable you can't even fathom it. You are still making a statement, but having some fun with it."

It’s about time Wonder Woman is making her big screen debut. It sounds like they are treating the character with care, but only time will tell on if fans will embrace this new version of the character. The movie hits theaters on March 25th.

Hilarious Teaser Trailer for Taika Waititi’s HUNT FOR THE WILDERPEOPLE

One of the best films that I’ve seen at Sundance so far is Taika Waititi’s Hunt For the Wilderpeople. This was a hilarious movie that had me and everyone else in the audience rolling with laughter. It also tells a very touching, heartfelt story that the world needs to see. I wrote a review of it over the weekend and you can read that here in case you missed it.

Thanks to Pili Films, I’ve got a teaser trailer to share with you that gives you a little taste of what you will see in the movie. It shows you all the ways that the main character, Ricky Baker, is a “bad egg.”

The movie stars Sam Neill and Julian Dennison as the main characters, and it is based on Barry Crump’s book Wild Pork and Watercress, which was adapted for the screen by Waititi. Here’s the synopsis:

Raised on hip-hop and foster care, defiant city kid Ricky gets a fresh start in the New Zealand countryside. He quickly finds himself at home with his new foster family: the loving Aunt Bella, the cantankerous Uncle Hec, and dog Tupac. When a tragedy strikes that threatens to ship Ricky to another home, both he and Hec go on the run in the bush. As a national manhunt ensues, the newly branded outlaws must face their options: go out in a blaze of glory or overcome their differences and survive as a family.

Last year Waititi brought the hilarious vampire comedy What We Do In Shadows to Sundance, which was an amazing film! If you enjoyed that film, you’re really gonna love this one. The director is currently developing Thor: Ragnarok for Marvel, and after seeing this, I’m even more excited to see what he does with that.
