X-MEN: APOCALYPSE Concept Art Reveals Magneto's Increased Power

$

Entertainment Weekly has yet another piece of info about an upcoming superhero movie, and they've shared a piece of concept art from X-Men: Apocalypse that shows off the increased power of Magneto (Michael Fassbender).

Director Bryan Singer explains:

“One of Apocalypse’s many powers is he can imbue other mutants with greater ones. Magneto is demonstrating a small taste of what he can do now. Magneto is already enormously powerful…. Now Apocalypse gives him powers far beyond what we’ve seen before.”

I know it's not a popular opinion, but I think the trailer for X-Men: Apocalypse looks awful. Oscar Isaac and the rest of the cast are great, and Singer clearly still has talent when it comes to directing X-Men movies (I've only seen it once, but I think Days of Future Past is my favorite of the franchise), but I was not impressed at all by that trailer, so I don't have any hope at all that this will turn out to be as good or better than the most recent film in the series. We'll find out when the movie hits theaters on May 27th, 2016.

If you haven't seen it yet, be sure to check out the trailer recut with footage from the '90s X-Men animated series.

Honest Trailer For DIE HARD Celebrates The Classic Action Movie

ScreenJunkies has a new edition of Honest Trailers for us today, and this time they're looking back at one of the most beloved action movies of all time, Die Hard. I think the whole "Die Hard is totally a Christmas movie!" thing peaked a few years ago, but it's nice to see these guys actually go out of their way to praise a movie for once. And since Die Hard is one of the best written, directed, and acted action thrillers ever made, there's a lot to praise. (Read director Brad Bird's breakdown of why the movie is great right here.)

New GHOSTBUSTERS Image and Details About The Film's Ghosts

Paul Feig's new Ghostbusters has been a lightning rod of controversy ever since the female leads were announced, but hopefully by now the haters have had enough time to come to grips with the fact that women busting ghosts doesn't require a penis. EW has released a new photo from the film (above) that features stars Kristen Wiig, Leslie Jones, Kate McKinnon, and Melissa McCarthy, as well as some new information about the kinds of ghosts they'll be busting when they hit theaters next summer.

(Beware, this information could be considered SPOILERY for those who want to be surprised by the movie.)

EW says that, in the new film, some of the ghosts will take the form of "Pilgrims, old-timey sailors, Revolutionary War spirits, and even a couple of zoot-suited gangsters." It's not exactly an Earth-shattering revelation (especially considering reports that a prequel movie is in development), but I can see that being something that could be a nice surprise in the actual film that could put a smile on people's faces if they didn't know it was coming.

Ghostbusters arrives in theaters on July 15th, 2016.

GAME OF THRONES Season 6: Bran's INCEPTION Connection Will Be A Game-Changer

$

No, there won't be a real, literal connection between Game of Thrones and Christopher Nolan's Inception in the upcoming sixth season of the HBO series, but Isaac Hempstead-Wright — who plays the not-so-young Bran Stark — has teased a figurative connection between the two properties in a new interview.

Speaking with EW, Hempstead-Wright revealed that the show, which has shied away from flashbacks save for a brief one featuring a young Cersei Lannister last season, is about to switch up its storytelling style (vague possible SPOILERS ahead):

“Previously Bran’s seen tiny glimpses of future or past but never has he been very much in control in the situation,” he says. “Now we’re given looks into very important events in the past, present and future of this world and Bran is beginning to piece them together like a detective, almost as if he’s watching the show. Equally, he’s now discovering how crucial he could be in the Great War. It’s quite Inception-y.”

In the show's early seasons, I always sort of wished they would just hurry up and move on to the next scene any time Bran showed up, but since I've now read most of George R.R. Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire novels (I still haven't finished A Dance With Dragons), his storyline works much better in book form than it does on screen. I'm definitely interested to see how Bran operates as a character now that he's finally trained with the Three-Eyed Raven, since up until now his entire existence seemed to revolve around simply making his way across Westeros to get to that character. Game of Thrones returns to HBO sometime in April. Check out the teaser trailer below:

Kevin Feige Talks About DOCTOR STRANGE's Powers, Confirms Which Infinity Stone Will Appear

A lot of information about Doctor Strange has come out over the past couple of days, as Disney and Marvel try to keep fans interested in the MCU while Star Wars dominates the cultural discussion. The latest in the slow drip of info comes from Marvel Studios president and producer Kevin Feige, who spoke with EW about the powers of the Sorcerer Supreme (Benedict Cumberbatch) in the upcoming film:

“He can do a whole host of things, eventually,” explains Feige, who is also the producer of Doctor Strange. “He does cast spells, which in the comics have very sort of tongue-twisty fun names. We don’t want to shy away from that, because that’s what makes Doctor Strange Doctor Strange. He has a Cloak of Levitation that allows him to fly, but he doesn’t fly like Superman or like Thor. It’s almost got a consciousness of its own, this cloak, which, again, gives us a superhero with a red cape — which we’ve seen a few times — but allows us to do it in a wholly unique and wholly original way. He can create these mandalas of light that he can use as shields and he can use as sort of weapons. He can create portalas that will open before your eyes that he can step through and go to other places around the world. And frankly, even in this film, we’ll only touch upon what a lot of his powers are.”

Feige also essentially confirmed which of the two remaining Infinity Stones we'll see in the movie:

“The Cloak of Levitation [and] the Eye of Agamotto are his two signature pieces,” says Feige. “In this film, the Eye is a very important relic that can be quite dangerous if used in the wrong hands, because it has the ability to do any number of things, the most dangerous of which is, it can sort of manipulate probabilities. Which is also another way of saying, ‘screw around with time’ — which is part of our story.”

That seems like the Eye of Agamotto is a lock for the Time stone, which will leave the Soul stone as the only remaining stone that hasn't been accounted for in the MCU thus far. Assuming Thanos acquires all of the stones to fill his gauntlet before Avengers: Infinity War — Part 1, that means the Soul stone will need to make an appearance in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, Thor: Ragnarok, Black Panther, or — my personal choice — the solo Spider-Man movie. Even though that's a Sony film, including the final Infinity Stone would be a great way to link that film to the MCU.

Doctor Strange arrives in theaters on November 4th, 2016.

Kylo Ren Realizes The Absurdity of STAR WARS Character Names in Funny Video

CollegeHumor has created an animated Star Wars: The Force Awakens parody video featuring the character of Kylo Ren pitching a plan to destroy the Resistance with a gang of bounty hunters. But as he reads their names, he begins to realize the utter absurdity of most characters' names in the Star Wars universe. This is basically the classic Key & Peele football player name sketch, only set in a galaxy far, far away:

Marvel Studios Got The Rights Back For The Villain Taskmaster

$

The rights to the Marvel Comics villain Taskmaster have been over at 20th Century Fox for some time now, but according to ComicBook.com, the rights have recently reverted back to Marvel Studios. The rights of the character were brought into question during an interview with Deadpool director Tim Miller. When asked what other characters he'd like to see fight Deadpool on the big screen, he said:

“I’d love to see Deadpool fight Batman - no, I’m just kidding, that’s not even in the Marvel family! I’d love to see Deadpool go up against Taskmaster who’s another Marvel total fuckin’ badass. But if I was to stay inside the Fox family, I would like to see him fight X-23, the female Wolverine. The female clone of Wolverine.”

It was that comment of staying "inside the Fox family" that raised some eyebrows. That basically implied that Taskmaster was back over at Marvel, and the site checked with their sources to confirm. The rights to that character reverted back to Marvel Studios at the same time the rights to Daredevil did.

Apparently at one point Fox actually tried to develop a live-action film project for the villain, but it never got off the ground.

Taskmaster is a pretty badass villain, so it would be cool if Marvel actually ended up using him in something some day. He seems like a character they might use in one of their TV or Netflix shows, but we'll just have to wait and see. For those of you not familiar with the character, here are some details thanks to Marvel:

The man who would become the Taskmaster was born a prodigious savant of mnemonic talents. He discovered his unusual abilities in childhood when, after watching a cowboy television program, he found he could duplicate the rope tricks he had seen the actors perform. Growing to understand his ability, he saw a man perform a difficult backwards leap from a diving board; he duplicated the dive, but nearly drowned because he didn’t know how to swim. Afterwards, his mother called in psychiatrists who studied his ability, terming it “photographic reflexes.” He employed his talent several times during his youth for professional gain, most notably when he became a star quarterback of his high school football team after watching one pro football game. After graduating high school he contemplated becoming a crimefighter, but decided crime would be more lucrative.
Taskmaster possesses photographic reflexes, which enables him to watch another person’s physical movements and duplicate them without practice, no matter how complex. This ability is only limited by the fact that he does not possess superhuman strength or other superhuman attributes.
Taskmaster has made extensive use of video tapes and movies to study the movements of superhuman adventurers, as well as athletes, marksmen, stunt performers, and soldiers. Thus he has gained a wide range of combat and acrobatic skills. These skills include, but are not limited to, all present day and many historical martial arts, boxing, wrestling, swordsmanship, archery, marksmanship, gymnastics, aerial acrobatics and sleight of hand.
Recently it has been discovered that Taskmaster also possesses photographic memory and voice impersonation.

Marvel has released a few more images from Daredevil season two for your viewing enjoyment. They include Charlie Cox as Matt Murdock wearing a darker-looking Daredevil costume, Jon Bernthal as Frank Castle , a.k.a. the Punisher, and Élodie Yung as Elektra. Unfortunately, we’ll have to wait to see her in her costume.

To check out some previously released images that we posted yesterday along with an interview with showrunner Doug Petrie talking about the series and the new characters, click here.

Blinded as a young boy but imbued with extraordinary senses, Matt Murdock (Charlie Cox) fights against injustice by day as a lawyer, and by night as the Super Hero “Daredevil” in modern day Hell's Kitchen, New York City.

TV Spot and Poster for HAIL, CAESAR! The Most Epic Comedy of the Year

tv-spot-and-poster-for-hail-caesar-the-most-epic-comedy-of-the-year1

We’ve got a new TV spot and poster for Joel and Ethan Coen’s upcoming film Hail, Caesar!, which is being billed as the most epic comedy of the year. The films that these guys make are always freakin’ fantastic, and this next film of theirs looks wonderfully entertaining.

I do find it interesting that even though the trailers are marketing this film as a comedy, the composer of the film, Carter Burwell, said this about it in an interview with THR:

“I wouldn’t actually call it a ‘musical comedy’ — there are movies within the movie, and those movies might have comedic music, but the movie we’re making is actually not comical. I haven’t written the music yet, but I’m quite certain it’s actually going to be quite the opposite. It’s going to be rather serious, and it’s about faith. It’s not about the music.
“It’s actually pretty complicated, musically — you’ll see, the themes that I’m writing for the movie have to relate to the themes of the movies within the movie. So it’s actually this rug with all these threads going in and out. But I haven’t written it yet!”

Sounds like a Coen brothers movie to me! The film also has a great ensemble cast that includes George Clooney, Josh Brolin, Ralph Fiennes, Tilda Swinton, Channing Tatum, Scarlett Johansson, Jonah Hill, and Frances McDormand

It's set in the golden age of Hollywood, and the story follows "a single day in the life of a studio fixer who is presented with plenty of problems to fix." It's a comedic take that revolves around Eddie Mannix (Brolin) as he juggles movie stars, gossip columnists, and more.

The movie hits theaters on February 5th, 2016.

A couple weeks ago we learned that Cate Blanchett will be joining Marvel's Thor: Ragnarok. There's no official word on who she might be playing, but I personally think she will be taking on the role of Hela, the Goddess of Death, because she would be perfect for it!

Artist Xteve Abanto thought the same thing and created a couple pieces of awesome fan art that show us what Blanchett could look like in the role. I really like this art, especially the piece below, which is called Thunder Vs. Hela, which features the villain facing off against Thor.

'Thunder god, accept your fate. None may challenge Hela’s will.’ - Hela, Goddess of Death

Taika Waititi is on board to direct the third film in the Thor franchise from a script written by Craig Kyle, Christopher Yost, and Stephany Folsom, who was recently hired to work on it.

Thor: Ragnarok hits theaters on November 3rd, 2017. Blanchett joins Chris Hemsworth, Mark Ruffalo, and Tom Hiddleston in the film.

The photos from Tim Miller's Deadpool continue to roll in, and today we have three new ones featuring the Merc With a Mouth (Ryan Reynolds), Negasonic Teenage Warhead (Brianna Hildebrand) wearing her X-Men costume, and Angel Dust (Gina Carano).

The images come from Empire Magazine, and during an interview, Reynolds talks about the film's connection to the X-Men universe:

"This film certainly works within the context of the X-Men universe, but it doesn't necessarily include the sensibilities of an X-Men movie. It's like taking an X-Men character, pumping him full of LSD and then releasing him back into the fold."

The film will explode in theaters on February 12th, 2016. To catch up on all of the previous Deadpool news we've posted, click here

Do you love Star Wars enough to drop $25,000 on a lightsaber fountain pen? It comes with a levitating display stand, so maybe it’s worth it, right? No. I don’t understand these kinds of items. Even if I was freakin’ rich beyond my wildest dreams, I could never even consider buying a $25,000 pen. I would spend that kind of cash on a real lightsaber, though!

The pen comes from S.T. Dupont Paris, and they are only making eight of them. They will feature either a Yoda or Darth Vader lightsaber theme.

To celebrate the new film Star Wars episode VII 'the Force Awakens' S.T. Dupont have released a range of Limited Edition Star Wars products, so be part of the Jedi alliance and fight against dark side with the S.T. Dupont Limited Edition Star Wars levitating light saber writing instrument; a pen fit for a Jedi master. Strictly limited to only 8! This edition features Jedi Master Yoda presenting green topaz and symbolises the light side of the force. The pen is formed from Bronze with black lacquer with palladium and rhodium finishes, which replicated the original design of light saber first seen in the original film Star Wars episode IV 'A New Hope'. The pen is presented on a levitating platform which is intelligently done using magnets.

The pens are made of bronze, and they have “black lacquer with palladium and rhodium finishes.” The pen is also capped off with a topaz crystal that’s available in either red or green to represent the lightsaber blade.

Crowdfunded STAR TREK Fan Film Slapped With a Lawsuit From Paramount Pictures

$

crowdfunded-star-trek-fan-film-slapped-with-a-lawsuit-from-paramount-pictures

Earlier this year, a prelude to a Star Trek fan film was released called Axanar. I've posted that 21-minute short for you to watch below. That short was crowdfunded and it served as a stepping stone to a much larger project. The team that made that launched another crowdfunding campaign on Indiegogo for a full-length feature film, and so far it has raised over $1.13 million.

Over the years, Paramount and CBS — the rights holders to the Star Trek franchise — have supported fan films and even encouraged them at times! But this week they slapped the production company of this Star Trek film with a lawsuit. I guess it just got too big for them, and they felt threatened by it.

It probably didn't help that Axanar is officially described as the "first independent" Star Trek film, and not a fan film. Here's the official description of the project:

Axanar is the first fully-professional, independent Star Trek film.  While some may call it a "fan film" as we are not licensed by CBS, Axanar has professionals working in front and behind the camera, with a fully-professional crew--many of whom have worked on Star Trek itself--who ensure Axanar will be the quality of Star Trek that all fans want to see.
For you, the Star Trek fan, Axanar is a return to the type of Star Trek all of us grew up on, with a hopeful future where mankind works with other races to explore the stars, via storytelling that is positive and teaches us about ourselves.  Axanar feels like Star Trek because it is made by two of the biggest Star Trek fans in the world, Alec Peters and Robert Burnett.  Alec was the executive producer/co-writer of Prelude to Axanar, and Rob wrote & directed Free Enterprise.

The producers of the film, including Alec Peters, are obviously looking to make a studio-quality film. Apparently veteran Star Trek actor George Takei has even helped push the film forward. It's easy to see why Paramount is going after them.

According to the lawsuit that was filed, "The Axanar Works infringe Plaintiffs’ works by using innumerable copyrighted elements of Star Trek, including its settings, characters, species, and themes."

Here's the description of the film itself, and what the story will entail:

"Axanar takes place 21 years before the events of 'Where no Man Has Gone Before,' the first Kirk episode of the original Star Trek. Axanar is the story of Garth of Izar, the legendary Starfleet captain who is Captain Kirk’s hero ... Axanar tells the story of Garth and his crew during the Four Years War, the war with the Klingon Empire that almost tore the Federation apart. Garth’s victory at Axanar solidified the Federation and allowed it to become the entity we know in Kirk’s time. It is the year 2245 and the war with the Klingons ends here."

It sounds like it would be a pretty awesome film! It's a shame that Paramount is trying to shut it down, but they do have every legal right to do so. Peters didn't think there would be any legal issues with the film because he has met with CBS and Paramount regarding it, and it seemed to him like everything would be fine as long as the movie didn't make any money upon its release.

When talking to The Wrap, Peters said, "CBS has a long history of accepting fan films. I think Axanar has become so popular that CBS realizes that we’re just making their brand that much better." I guess the studio had a change of heart.

According to THR, "Paramount and CBS, represented by attorneys at Loeb & Loeb, are now demanding an injunction as well as damages for direct, contributory and vicarious copyright infringement. Although the plaintiffs have allowed ample cosplaying over the years and even permitted other derivatives like amateur Star Trek shows to circulate, the lawsuit illustrates that there is a place where no man has gone before, where the entertainment studios are not willing to let be occupied: Crowdfunded, professional-quality films that use copyrighted 'elements' like Vulcans and Klingons, Federation starships, phasers, and stuff like the 'look and feel of the planet, the characters’ costumes, their pointy ears, and their distinctive hairstyle.'"

Maybe the studio should have told Peters that when they initially met with him regarding the project. Seems to me like they gave the talented people involved with this production a false sense of hope.

Joey Paur’s 15 Favorite Movies of 2015

$

2015 was a year of wonderfully amazing movies. This is the second year in a row for me where there were so many great films that I couldn’t contain my list to only ten films, so I came up with a list of 15, which was still kind of difficult to do!

There’s a good mix of movies on my list, featuring different genres ranging from big budget films to smaller indie movies. Interestingly enough, there are no Marvel films that made my list this year. This is the first time since 2008 when Iron Man was released that's been the case! I enjoyed both Avengers: Age of Ultron and Ant-Man, but there were a lot of better films that were released this year.

I believe that these are all must-see movies, so if you haven’t seen any of them, please take the time to do so. They will not disappoint. As you'll see, I have lots of different tastes in movies, not just the geeky stuff!

Star Wars: The Force Awakens

Of course this movie is going to make my list! It’s freakin’ Star Wars and it turned out to be everything I hoped it would! I’m so happy that J.J. Abrams and Lucasfilm delivered a film that the fans have been waiting 30 years to see. He pulled it off beautifully, and I couldn’t have asked for anything more. I’m so excited for the future of Star Wars! Here's our review.

Mad Max: Fury Road

This was the most fun that I had at the movies all year. It was a non-stop action-packed adrenaline rush of complete badassery! It was awesome to see that director George Miller has still got it, and I hope we don’t have to wait so long before we see another movie from him again. I can wait to see what he does next! Here's our review.

The Hateful Eight

In my opinion, this is the best film that Quentin Tarantino has made yet. He’s matured so much as a filmmaker over the years, and this is easily the best western I’ve seen since Clint Eastwood’s Unforgiven. The Hateful Eight is destined to be a classic. Here's our review.

The Big Short

I wasn’t expecting much from this film when I first went to see it. In fact, I wasn’t even interested until someone recommended it to me. It ended up being one of the best movies of the year. I was shocked by how good it was, and how it affected me on an emotional level. It was such an infuriating film to watch because of the subject matter of how greedy Wall Street is and the lengths people would go to ruin people's lives so they could get richer. Here's our review.

The Witch

It always seems like there’s one film that I see at Sundance at the beginning of the year that sticks with me to the end. This year that film for me was the supernatural horror thriller The Witch. This movie delivered an incredible, insane, and creepy story that just kicked my ass. I had never seen a period genre film like this before, and it sucked me right in and didn’t let go. Here's our review.

The Walk

If you missed The Walk while it was playing in IMAX 3D, you really missed out on something incredibly special. Robert Zemeckis made one of his best films in years, and Joseph Gordon-Levitt was charming as hell. I’ve been a fan of the story surrounding Philippe Petit for a long time, but seeing his story told in this way was an exhilarating experience not to be missed. Here's our review.

The Revenant

Holy crap! This movie was just a freakin’ hardcore manly man movie. I enjoyed watching every bit of Hugh Glass’s insane journey of survival and revenge. I absolutely loved this film and it was one of the most beautifully shot movies I saw this year. Then there’s Leonardo DiCaprio, who gave one of his greatest performances yet. I’d like to see him take home the award for Best Actor at the Oscars for his role in this. Here's our review.

Creed

It may have basically been a retelling of the first Rocky movie, but it was done in a way that made a lasting impression. Michael B. Jordan gave one of the best and most intense performances in his career in the movie and it was awesome to see Sylvester Stallone give another powerful performance, which is something I haven’t seen in a while. I loved how this movie turned out! Here's our review.

Bone Tomahawk

This was a surprisingly brutal western with such a unique insanity to it. It had some of the most colorful characters in it, and the villains they were up against were absolutely terrifying. There were some pretty gut-wrenching scenes in this thing! This is one of those films that not a lot of people went out to see this year, so if you haven’t seen it, you really need to check it out. Here's our review.

Kingsman: The Secret Service

This movie simply blew me away with its action-packed badassery. If you hadn’t seen the movie yet and I was taking you to see it, I would say to you, “We're all gonna have so much fucking fun we're gonna need plastic surgery to remove our goddamn smiles! You'll be whistling 'Zip-A-Dee Doo-Dah' out of your assholes!” - Chevy Chase, Vacation. Here's our review.

Krampus

This the most entertaining horror film of the year, and it also happened to be a Christmas movie. This is one of those movies that will be a classic. I know for myself, it’s been added to my list of films to watch every Christmas. I had such a fun time watching this movie, and I can’t wait to see what Michael Dougherty gives us next! Here's our review.

The Man From U.N.C.L.E.

This was such a quick-witted action-packed spy thriller and was the most underrated movie of the year! Not a lot of people went out and saw it, which is a shame because it was so damn good! Due to its poor box office performance, though, I doubt we’ll see a sequel, which is a bloody shame. The movie was just too cool for its own good.

Spotlight

Spotlight was such a powerful and inspiring film. I love writing for a geek website about geeky things, but this movie made me wish I was involved with investigative journalism that plays a part in making the world a better place. The subject matter of this movie was heavy, and the performances of the actors in it were astounding. Here's our review.

Brooklyn

I reluctantly went into this movie not know much about it. All I really knew was that it had a 98% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and I had already seen everything else that was out in theaters at the time. Boy oh boy, it was was just a simply wonderful film that told a heartwarming story that involved fantastic characters. I adore this film! Here's our review.

Me and Earl and the Dying Girl

What a comedic emotional rollercoaster this movie was! This is one of those little indie films that just wowed me in every way. It was hilarious, dramatic, and heartwarming all at the same time. I especially enjoy the characters in the film and their awkward relationships with each other. Here's our review.

It's the week between Christmas and New Years, so it's not too surprising that news has been extremely slow over the past couple of days. But Hollywood studios aren't content to just let Star Wars: The Force Awakens be all anyone talks about for the rest of the week, so they're gradually releasing a handful of images for upcoming blockbusters simply to get us talking about them. Mission accomplished!

Warner Bros. has released a new image from the Harry Potter prequel/spin-off Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them through Empire Magazine, and I don't know if you can handle this, but it features the lead character, Newt Scamander (Eddie Redmayne), viciously battling gravity as he fights forward and...climbs some steps! Look at the sheer determination in his eyes! I know this breathlessly awesome photo makes it next to impossible, but please try to contain your excitement!

Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them arrives in theaters on November 18th, 2016. Watch the teaser trailer here.

If you've ever wondered what an awesome Spider-Gwen animated series could look like, check out this wonderfully animated fan-made clip! It was created by Allegra Town Studio, and I freakin' love how it turned out. It's really short, but it does pack a fun little punch. It would be so great to see this character get her own series or movie one day. This has been something that has been speculated about in the past, and Marvel and Sony would be crazy not to do something with her — especially since she's become so damn popular!

George Lucas Says He Sold STAR WARS To "White Slavers," Elaborates on His Thoughts About THE FORCE AWAKENS

To say that George Lucas has a complicated relationship with Star Wars would be a massive understatement. The franchise has become so ingrained in every aspect of pop culture that I think sometimes people forget that the entire thing sprang forth from the vision of one man, and while he used the basic formula of Joseph Campbell's hero's journey, he did it in a startlingly original way. I love The Empire Strikes Back as much as the next person, but my favorite movie in the series is always going to be the original Star Wars, because it didn't have the benefit of being able to build on to characters and situations that have already been established. It was a totally original vision, and a super ballsy movie to make considering the time period in which it was released.

Lucas recently sat down for a nearly hour-long interview with Charlie Rose that I think is worth watching if you have the time. In it, he (maybe jokingly? maybe not) compares Disney to "white slavers," talks about his intended legacy, tells a story about how he was developing a new Star Wars movie of his own before he sold Lucasfilm, and elaborates a little on his thoughts about The Force Awakens. Check it out below:

In case you can't watch the video, here are some highlights:

After calling all of the previous Star Wars movies his "kids," he says “I sold them to the white slavers that takes these things, and [laughs]" before trailing off and answering a different question.

"They looked at the stories, and they said, 'We want to make something for the fans'....They decided they didn't want to use those stories, they decided they were going to do their own thing....They weren't that keen to have me involved anyway — but if I get in there, I'm just going to cause trouble, because they're not going to do what I want them to do. And I don't have the control to do that anymore, and all I would do is muck everything up. And so I said, 'Okay, I will go my way, and I'll let them go their way.'"

"They wanted to do a retro movie. I don't like that. Every movie I work very hard to make them completely different, with different planets, with different spaceships, make it new."

"I've been fascinated with the true nature of the medium — it's been used more as a recording medium, than as a art form unto itself," Lucas elaborated. "...they call them tone poems — in the beginning in Russia, this was a whole movement of: how do you tell visual stories, basically without dialogue, without all the things you use to tell a story, and you just use the film itself. It's kind of esoteric, it hasn't come much further in one hundred years. I'm going to try and take it into something that is more emotionally powerful than most of the stuff we've done up to this point."
