Kiefer Sutherland Will "Definitely Not Return in Any Way" For More 24 Episodes

Here's some sad news for fans of Jack Bauer and the terrorism drama 24: star Kiefer Sutherland just told the BBC that he will "definitely not return in any way" for any future incarnation of 24, including a continuation of the show or the proposed spin-off that was revealed a few months ago.

In a nice piece about Sutherland's new western film Forsaken, in which he acts opposite his dad (Donald Sutherland) for the first time, the actor made it crystal clear that he wouldn't be back to reprise his role as Bauer in any way, saying "24 is definitely over now for me."

"It's one of the greatest gifts I've ever been given as an actor, but it's moving on without me, I want to do other things.
I want to do more television. My experience of 24 was unbelievable, but the main benefit was that it was nice to do something that people actually watched, and that they enjoyed.
There are some movies I've made people might have enjoyed, but there were nine of them watching. And so 24 was so refreshing - the most significant thing was that it was accessible to a lot of people and to know they enjoyed it was so rewarding for me.
I don't think there's a better medium than television out there at the moment. So think I want to do more of it and look for projects where I can repeat my experience.
You have to take your time though to find something like it - and that means you have to work less. So I'll be waiting for something that's worth it, with the potential for the kind of audience access that 24 had."

Earlier this year, Fox was considering another season of 24 but without Sutherland's Bauer involved, and then that developed into the idea of a spin-off centered on a younger male lead with Sutherland "weaving in and out as a guest star." But now it seems that Sutherland has thought better of it, and he sounds like he's finally made the decision to stop shouting at terrorists to tell him what he needs to know. Damn it.

Watch Tom Cruise Actually Hold His Breath For 6 Minutes

We previously reported that Tom Cruise held his breath for over six minutes to shoot the underwater scene in Mission: Impossible Rogue Nation. For those of you that weren't sure if this is something that you believe or not (since the sequence in the film wasn't captured in one long continuous shot), a behind-the-scenes featurette for the movie has been released that shows you a time-lapse video of the actor actually holding his breath underwater for six freakin' minutes.

One of the things I respect about Cruise is the fact that he is actually so committed to his films and the characters that he plays that he's willing to do his own crazy-ass stunts like this. Holding onto the side of an airplane while it takes off and holding your breath for over six minutes to shoot an underwater scene in the movie are both impressive as hell.

Brendon Gleeson and Jeremy Irons Join ASSASSIN'S CREED Movie

Michael Fassbender's long-in-the-works Assassin's Creed movie just added two more excellent actors to its cast. Deadline reports that Brendan Gleeson and Jeremy Irons have joined the film adaptation of the popular video game, with Gleeson playing Fassbender's father and Irons playing the father of Marion Cotillard's character.

Fassbender is playing Callum Lynch, a character created specifically for the movie. Macbeth director Justin Kurzel is directing, and Michael Kenneth Williams and Ariane Labed co-starring. The Oscar-winning Irons will also play Alfred in Zack Snyder's Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, and Gleeson has a role in the upcoming Ron Howard thriller In The Heart of The Sea. This is one of those pieces of casting in which the second I heard the news, I nodded my head and said out loud and said "of course." These guys are both tremendous actors who will fit perfectly in the world of Assassin's Creed. The film is scheduled to hit theaters on December 21st, 2016.

Callum Lynch discovers he is a descendant of the secret Assassins society through unlocked genetic memories that allow him to relive the adventures of his ancestor, Aguilar, in 15th Century Spain. After gaining incredible knowledge and skills he’s poised to take on the oppressive Knights Templar in the present day.

"Death waits for no man."

The first trailer has been released for Kurt Russell's upcoming film Bone Tomahawk, and if you're a fan of westerns, then it looks like this movie is just for you. The story follows four men who set out on a journey to rescue a group of captives from cannibalistic cave dwellers. I'm excited about this flick! It seriously looks like a great and intense movie.

The movie was written and directed by Craig Zahler, and it also has a great supporting cast that includes Patrick Wilson, Matthew Fox, and Richard Jenkins

When a group of cannibal savages kidnaps settlers from the small town of Bright Hope, an unlikely team of gunslingers, led by Sheriff Franklin Hunt (Kurt Russell), sets out to bring them home. But their enemy is more ruthless than anyone could have imagined, putting their mission – and survival itself – in serious jeopardy. Kurt Russell (The Hateful Eight, Tombstone) leads an all-star cast, including Patrick Wilson (Insidious), Matthew Fox (“Lost”) and Richard Jenkins (The Cabin in the Woods) in this gritty, action-packed thriller chronicling a terrifying rescue mission in the Old West.

Bone Tomahawk arrives in theaters and on VOD on October 23rd.

Trivia: Nicolas Cage Almost Played Aragorn in THE LORD OF THE RINGS

Here's a piece of movie trivia I'd never heard before: Nicolas Cage apparently turned down the role of Aragorn in Peter Jackson's The Lord of The Rings trilogy.

Cage revealed the information an interview with Newsweek:

Are there any roles that you've down in your career that you regret turning down?
I don't really have any regrets. I think regret is a waste of time. I try to always move forward as opposed to dwelling on the past or the movies that might have happened. There certainly were movies that I probably would have benefited from if circumstances in my life allowed me to make them.
Any particular ones that come to mind?
Lord of the Rings. That trilogy. Aragorn. Or The Matrix. But the thing is about those movies, I can watch them. I can enjoy them as an audience member. I don't really watch my own movies. And so I genuinely do have the joy of watching these—especially with Lord of the Rings.
Were you offered a role in that?
Yeah.... There were different things going on in my life at the time that precluded me from being able to travel and be away from home for three years. And I do mean it. I get to enjoy the movies as an audience member, because I don't watch my own movies.

The idea of actors who were almost cast in iconic movies has always been fascinating to me because it provides movie fans with a "what if" scenario to debate not only whether that version of the film would have been better than the real one, but how that person's presence might have affected the careers of everyone involved moving forward. Which version of Cage would we have seen? The Oscar-winning actor, or the one willing to embrace insanity in movies like The Wicker Man and Vampire's Kiss? We'll never know, but it'll be a fun conversation for movie geeks to have.

Jackson initially wanted Daniel Day-Lewis or Russell Crowe to play the part, but ended up casting Stuart Townsend as Aragorn and shooting for four days with him before recasting Viggo Mortensen because Townsend was too young. I just rewatched the LOTR trilogy in the past week, and I can't imagine Cage having the same sense of mystique, physicality, and sensitivity that Mortensen brought to that role.

My wife, who was (and is) a huge fan of Mortensen as Aragorn, reacted like this when I told her this news:

What do you think? Could Cage have been a convincing Aragorn?

(Header image from Lord of the Cage, a Tumblr page you should definitely check out if you found any of this amusing.)

James McAvoy Takes Over For Joaquin Phoenix in New M. Night Shyamalan Thriller

I haven't seen The Visit, but I've heard some surprisingly decent things about it, considering it's a movie directed by M. Night Shyamalan. The filmmaker had been in a horrendous downward spiral over the past few years, but some people are saying that his low-budget horror movie is something of a return to form. Shyamalan is reteaming with producer Jason Blum for his next project, a supernatural thriller that was once set to reunite the writer/director with Joaquin Phoenix, who starred alongside Mel Gibson in 2004's Signs and Bryce Dallas Howard in The Village.

But now THR reports that X-Men star James McAvoy has replaced Phoenix on the movie, and talks with Phoenix apparently never made it past the discussion stages. The plot of the new movie is being kept under wraps, but with someone as high-profile as McAvoy on board, it will presumably be a more ambitious movie than The Visit, which only cost around $5 million to make. I don't imagine it will be that much more, though: Blum has become one of the most efficient and effective producers in town specifically because he keeps his budgets minimal, maximizing profits when his films start to rake it in at the box office.

It would have been cool to see Shyamalan reunite with Phoenix, but McAvoy is a fine actor in his own right. Hopefully he'll help the embattled director continue his upward trajectory.

RED Writers Revving Up GRAN TURISMO Movie at Sony

$

Looks like a Gran Turismo movie is inching closer to the starting line.

After Watchmen writer Alex Tse took a pass at the screenplayTHR reports that Jon and Erich Hoeber, the brothers behind the screenplays for Red and Red 2, have come on board to rewrite the Sony Pictures adaptation of the popular racing game. No story details have been confirmed, but THR claims the story "is said to play with the conceit of a gamer-turned-racer." So it's another movie in which someone's video game skills translate into real-world skills? I wish Hollywood would go ahead and move on from that trend, because it's getting sort of tiresome already.

TRON Legacy director Joseph Kosinski has been hired to direct, and he'll work with the Hoeber brothers to make sure it meets his expectations. Kosinski hasn't exactly had the greatest scripts to work with thus far in his directing career, but a video game adaptation of a pure racing game gives him a blank slate, so maybe this will end up being a good film. At the very least, it should be better than Need For Speed.

FLIGHT OF THE CONCHORDS Director In Talks For THOR: RAGNAROK

After the massive disappointment that was Thor: The Dark World, I could not possibly be any less interested in Thor: Ragnarok, the upcoming third film in the Thor solo trilogy. But I could be persuaded to be a little more interested in it, and that's exactly what just happened when I read The Wrap's report about the man who's in talks to direct it.

Flight of the Conchords and What We Do In The Shadows director Taika Waititi is currently in negotiations with Marvel Studios to helm the sequel, beating out Zombieland director Ruben Fleischer for the much-desired job. (Other sites indicate Dodgeball director Rawson Marshall Thurber and Goosebumps helmer Rob Letterman were also in contention, while a previous report pointed to Adam McKay, Gareth Edwards, and Matt Reeves as rumored options.)

I haven't seen all of Waititi's work (he directed the indie Eagle vs. Shark and also wrote the upcoming Disney animated movie Moana), but he's definitely a change of pace from the typically boring contenders that are always rumored for directing gigs like this. Maybe he can mix in a bit of humor with the apocalyptic events of this sequel. Thor: Ragnarok will star Chris Hemsworth, Tom Hiddleston, Jaimie Alexander, and presumably Natalie Portman, and will arrive in theaters on July 28th, 2017.

New Marvel TV Series DAMAGE CONTROL Coming To ABC

Ben Karlin, former executive producer of The Daily Show and The Colbert Report, is developing a new show called Damage Control for Marvel TV, and ABC has just given it a pilot order.

The half-hour live action comedy will follow the clean-up crew of the Marvel universe. Deadline describes them like this:

Specializing in dealing with the aftermath of the unique fallout from superhero conflicts, they’re the ones who are in charge of returning lost ray guns to their rightful owners, help to reschedule a wedding venue after it has been vaporized in a superhero battle, or even track down a missing prize African parrot that’s been turned to stone or goo.

The team has never had their own ongoing comic book, but has appeared often in Marvel stories since the late '80s, including making an appearance in Civil War (though they won't be in the film adaptation). You can read more about them here.

This sounds extremely similar to Powerless, an office comedy in the works at NBC set in the DC Comics universe about people who work at an insurance company who deal with the fallout of superhero and supervillain damage. Do you think there's enough room on TV for two superhero shows with essentially the same premise? Obviously there are a bunch of superhero shows already (not to mention countless lawyer and cop shows that are essentially interchangeable), but with something this specific, do you think audiences will actually care enough to tune into both? I feel like whichever one comes out first is going to be the winner, just because the other will seem like a blatant copycat.

Damage Control joins other live-action Marvel shows Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., Agent Carter, and the planned SHIELD spin-off Marvel's Most Wanted that centers on Mockingbird and Lance Hunter.

LETHAL WEAPON Reboot TV Series in Development at FOX

$

0

After spending years in development hell as a movie remake, Warner Bros. TV and FOX are teaming up to bring a Lethal Weapon reboot to the small screen.

The Hollywood Reporter has learned that the network has given the show a put-pilot commitment. The synopsis is as follows:

The TV version centers on a Texas cop and former Navy SEAL Martin Riggs (originally played by Mel Gibson) who, following the loss of his wife and baby, moves to Los Angeles to start anew. There, he gets partnered with LAPD detective Roger Murtaugh (Danny Glover), who, having recently suffered a "minor" heart attack, must avoid any stress in his life.

The filmmakers behind the original movies (director Richard Donner, writer Shane Black, etc.) won't be involved with the TV version, though THR claims "the original filmmakers have blessed the TV reboot."

Gibson and Glover built excellent chemistry over the course of that franchise, and the addition of Joe Pesci's character changed the dynamic — some would argue for the worse — in the second film. It's going to be tough for new actors to be able to take the Riggs and Murtaugh characters and make them their own, and I don't envy the people who end up being cast in this production. Forever and Chuck writer Matt Miller will write the TV version, and we'll see if this ends up going all the way to series or being abandoned somewhere along the way like the movie reboot.

The next episode is called “The Last Laugh” and we have a promo spot and clip for you to watch that shows us what’s in store for the upcoming episode next week. The clip features the Joker-like character Jerome paying a visit to his pops, and he’s not too happy with how his dad treated him as a kid.

Gordon and Bullock track down a nemesis from the past, leading to a standoff between Jerome (guest-star Cameron Monaghan) and Gordon. Meanwhile, a magic show at the Gotham Children's Hospital gala turns into a hostage situation in the all-new Rise of the Villains: The Last Laugh episode of GOTHAM airing Monday, October 5th on FOX.

A new behind-the-scenes featurette has been released for Guillermo del Toro’s gothic haunted house thriller Crimson Peak. It focuses on the gothic corridor, in which the ghosts from Del Toro’s dark imagination manifest themselves. The video features interviews with the director and and star Tom Hiddleston as they talk about this part of the house.

I’ve seen a lot of positive buzz surrounding this movie, so apparently horror fans are in for something really special!

When her heart is stolen by a seductive stranger, a young woman is swept away to a house atop a mountain of blood-red clay: a place filled with secrets that will haunt her forever. Between desire and darkness, between mystery and madness, lies the truth behind Crimson Peak.

The movie hits theaters on October 16th.
