MACGYVER Is Being Rebooted by Director James Wan for CBS

MacGyver is the latest classic 1980s TV series to be getting a reboot. Last week it was announced that The A-Team was getting a series reboot. To be honest, I'm surprised that a MacGyver reboot didn't happen sooner. It kinda seems like a no-brainer that could be very successful if done right.

THR reports that the series is set up at CBS, and they describe it as "a reimagining of the television series of the same name, following a 20-something MacGyver as he gets recruited into a clandestine organization where he uses his knack for solving problems in unconventional ways to help prevent disasters from happening."

NCIS: Los Angeles' R. Scott Gemmill will write the script and also serve as an executive producer on the action drama. Henry Winkler, who was an executive producer on the original run of the series, is also on board to produce alongside James Wan and Michael Clear of Atomic Monster.

Wan, who is currently working on The Conjuring 2, will direct the pilot episode. I'm a huge fan of Wan's work, so this series actually has the potential to be really good.

Here are a couple of wonderful pieces of art created by Coran "Kizer" Stone. They feature Spider-Gwen, Spider-Woman, Batgirl, and Spider-Man. I’ve enjoyed Stone’s work since I first came across his stuff years ago, and as long as he keeps pumping out radical art, I’ll keep posting it on the site!

First Clip from THE HUNGER GAMES: MOCKINGJAY - PART 2

Last week we brought you a new poster for The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 2 featuring Jennifer Lawrence as Katniss ready for her final showdown against President Snow and The Capitol. Thanks to Fandango, we now have the first clip from the film for you to watch. The scene shows us a meeting with several of the main players in the story as they are told what their roles will be in the assault on The Capitol. I've also included some additional photos from the movie thanks to EW.

With the nation of Panem in a full scale war, Katniss (Jennifer Lawrence) confronts President Snow (Donald Sutherland) in the final showdown. Teamed with a group of her closest friends – including Gale (Liam Hemsworth), Finnick (Sam Claflin), and Peeta (Josh Hutcherson) – Katniss goes off on a mission with the unit from District 13 as they risk their lives to stage an assassination attempt on President Snow who has become increasingly obsessed with destroying her. The mortal traps, enemies, and moral choices that await Katniss will challenge her more than any arena she faced in The Hunger Games.

The film will be released in theaters and IMAX on November 20th, 2015.

The Golden Age of Hollywood Comes to Life in Trailer For Coen Brothers' HAIL, CAESAR!

Joel and Ethan Coen have made another film that looks absolutely brilliant. I love the stories that these guys tell, and their humor is hilarious. Today we have the first very entertaining trailer for their latest project, Hail, Caesar! If you're a fan of their work, there's no doubt you're going to love what you see here.

The movie has an amazing ensemble cast of actors that includes George Clooney, Josh Brolin, Ralph Fiennes, Tilda Swinton, Channing Tatum, Scarlett Johansson, Jonah Hill, and Frances McDormand. It's set in the golden age of 1950s Hollywood, and the story follows "a single day in the life of a studio fixer who is presented with plenty of problems to fix." It's a comedic take that revolves around Eddie Mannix (Brolin) as he juggles movie stars, gossip columnists, and more.

The movie hits theaters on February 5th, 2016.

Here's a previously released description:
"It was not unusual during the time for studios’ internal security to protect their assets to construct and manage the squeaky clean image of their stars. The big stars of the day were under contracts for a certain number of pictures so the powerful studios had their own go-to guys (and sometimes hired outside investigators) to deep-six scandalous stories, whether it be romantic dalliances, drug use, DUIs, arrests, you name it. For the more serious threats, the fixers used pay-outs, strong-arming, and took care of 'problems' (real or perceived) by any means necessary. It was the day of the old Hollywood star system."

Will Forte Teases The "Gnarly" Potential Cold Open of MACGRUBER 2

To say MacGruber is one of the best movies based on a Saturday Night Live sketch isn't that big of a compliment, but it's also one of the funniest, most ridiculous action movies in the past five years. Perhaps appropriately, given its hero's (hilarious) lack of ability to avert explosions in the sketch, the movie bombed at the box office, but it gained a cult following on home video. It's beloved by entertainment journalists, and practically every time someone interviews star Will Forte, he's asked about a possible sequel.

In a new interview with Entertainment Weekly, he talks about how close he and his collaborators are to making the sequel:

“There’s nothing I would rather do than that. It’s not a question of if but when. This show [The Last Man on Earth] takes up every second of every day. Come Feburary, if I have a little bit of time, Jorma [Taccone, who directed MacGruber], John [Solomon, who co-wrote the script with Forte and Taccone] and I will get together and we’ll start banging it out.”

So it sounds like a sequel is inevitable, which is great news for fans of the original. This isn't going to be some factory-produced sequel that's made just as a cash-grab; Forte loves this movie as much as any of its biggest fans and wants to make something amazing as a follow-up. After mentioning that, once the basic story is done, the script will get a "dick-joke pass where we make our dick jokes better," he teases what they have in mind for the opening scene:

“There is a possibility of starting it in a way that you would never ever start an action movie,” he says, laughing. “We have this idea for a cold open, which we just don’t know if we have the balls to do. And we’ve done some crazy stuff. This is just like, ‘Do we really want to do this? Is this how we want to start out the movie?’ It’s pretty gnarly.” He pauses. “But we might just have to do it.”

We'll keep you posted on the development of MacGruber 2, but in the meantime, seek out the first one if you haven't seen it.

Interesting New Details For POWER RANGERS Movie Regarding Timeline, Villains, and More

$

Just yesterday, we learned that Naomi Scott had been cast in the role of Kimberly a.k.a. The Pink Ranger in director Dean Israelite's Power Rangers movie. There's still a lot that we don't know about the upcoming movie, but thanks to a report from Collider, we have some additional details to share with you about what fans might expect to see. This includes some interesting information on the timeline, the villains, and the opening scene.

A lot of fans expected the movie to be a reboot of the original series, but apparently that might not be the case. According to the recent intel, "the movie will be wholly set after the events of the current TV iteration, Power Rangers Dino Charge." They also say that the Dino Charge characters will also "factor into the movie’s opening, perhaps it will serve as a hand-off of the franchise to the new super-suited team."

The report goes on to expand on that opening scene of the movie, saying it "will open with a huge battle scene." This has been talked about in earlier rumors, but there is also updated info on the villains who will be involved. For those of you hoping to see Rita Repulsa and Lord Zedd, you might be disappointed to learn that they won't be the main bad guys. They will still be part of the universe, though.

There’s one major villain from the series that might be included, though! This bit of news could make you happy. This could be considered a SPOILER, so if you don't want to know then don't read past this point.

This classic villain promised she would return, but never did. This led fans to believe that maybe she was killed off or turned good by the Z-wave. That character is Scorpina. The report goes on to say:

"Sources tell us the ruthless and dangerous minion of Rita has returned to plague the Rangers once more. And it seems she’s brought an army, which she uses to battle the Power Rangers and their robot Megazords in the epic opening battle scene. From what we’re hearing, the Rangers (presumably the Dino Charge team at this point) are protecting the Morphin Grid, an energy field that provides power to every generation of Rangers. This energy grid not only lets the Rangers borrow its power to morph into their super versions, it gives them access to past, present, and future Ranger memories so that they can glimpse other Rangers and glean strategies from battles. The instruction manual on the Morphin Grid is probably pretty extensive, but certain glitches like not being able to sustain two of the same Rangers for long will give the Power Rangers writers plenty of plot options to work with."

I told you this new information would be interesting! Until any of this is actually confirmed, you've got to treat this as a rumor. That being said, Collider is usually reliable when it come to movie scoops like this. What do you think about the possible direction that this new Power Rangers could be going?

Beyond Fest Review: BONE TOMAHAWK is an Unflinching Western Classic

$

Statistically speaking, most movies are bad. That's simply an unfortunate truth. And after seeing so many average, disappointing, or outright terrible films every year, it's truly exciting when I'm sitting in a theater and I realize I'm watching something amazing. I cherish that feeling. When I'm watching a great movie, I can actually feel it recharging my love and passion for film. It's the kind of experience that, if I'm lucky, I'll get maybe three or four times a year. Bone Tomahawk delivered that feeling in a huge way. S. Craig Zahler's debut film is a perfect union of impeccable writing, controlled direction, stellar performances, and nail-biting tension. It's a once-in-a-decade masterpiece.

Arthur O'Dwyer (Patrick Wilson) is a foreman who recently sustained a leg injury while on the job. Laid up in his home in the small town of Bright Hope, his beloved wife Samantha (Lili Simmons) is called to the nearby jail one night to operate on a mysterious drifter. Under the cover of darkness, a stable boy is eviscerated while Samantha, the drifter, and a young sheriff's deputy are kidnapped by a tribe of cannibal troglodytes that live in the hills a few days away from the town. Sheriff Franklin Hunt (Kurt Russell) gathers his hapless old companion Chicory (Richard Jenkins), the injured Arthur, and the well-dressed, debonair gentleman John Brooder (Matthew Fox) and sets out to rescue them. The rescue party soon discovers the terrifying truth of what's lurking out in the hills.

This is an unflinchingly violent film, and while Zahler rarely revels in it, he also refuses to hold back. The opening shot features a man getting his throat slit, and there are things that happen in this movie that will put viewers through the ringer. Fans of hardcore horror films will have surely seen worse, but there's a scene of violence that happens here (it's so memorable, I'm tempted to call it a set piece all its own) that left me shocked at what I'd just witnessed. Most of the film features what I'd call slightly above average movie violence — a quick disemboweling here, an arrow through the face there — but the climax features some truly nasty stuff that isn't for the squeamish.

But the violence isn't what made me love the movie — it was the exceptional script and the well-crafted characters. The dialogue is clever without being annoying or too stylized; a bartender describes the effect of a drink as if "a tree fell on ya...a redwood." You get the sense that this is a fully fleshed-out world, and all of the characters feel vibrant and alive. The film embraces its simple, efficient structure: the stakes are clearly defined and they increase as we discover the horrors of what's in store for our characters at the end of their journey.

Richard Jenkins is unbelievably good as the sheriff's "back-up deputy," Chicory. He's a lovable dimwit with a heart of pure gold, a constant optimist who's ever loyal to his friend. He's the kind of comic relief character that could easily become grating, but Jenkins plays him with a sense of innocence that's incredibly endearing, and he ends up with some of the film's best lines. (I wouldn't be surprised if he earned a Best Supporting Actor nomination at the Academy Awards.) Fox — an actor I don't normally like, despite my love for Lost — was surprisingly good as Brooder, the arrogant sharpshooter with a dark past. He has history with Samantha and feels responsible for her kidnapping, and his stark lack of morality causes some nice tension between him and his riding companions.

Wilson and Simmons spend just enough time setting up their relationship and making us invest in it that we care when she's abducted, and Wilson excels at playing this stubborn, decent man who grimaces his way through the movie as he battles through the pain of his broken leg and the pain of not knowing what could be happening to his wife at any second during the search. Russell brings exactly the level of gruff badassery you want. He may as well be playing an older version of his Wyatt Earp from Tombstone since the two share similar leadership qualities, a determined grit, and a noble sense of duty.

This is a hell of a directorial debut, and it makes me want to voraciously consume everything Zahler has ever created. If his future movies are anything like this one, he could easily become one of my favorite filmmakers. Lean, merciless, and totally brilliant, Bone Tomahawk is a tense, badass western with a splatter of horror that left me breathless, excited, and totally reinvigorated.

OUTATIME Trailer Restores The BACK TO THE FUTURE DeLorean to its Former Glory

The DeLorean from Back to the Future is one of the most famous and instantly recognizable movie cars of all time, right up there next to the Ghostbusters' hearse or the Batmobile. The original car from the film was in bad shape a few years ago, so a joint effort between the studio and a fan movement to restore it resulted in the car being completely renovated, and it's now on display at Universal Studios Hollywood.

The restoration was captured in a documentary called Outatime that will be partially released on the upcoming Blu-ray/DVD release of BTTF later this month, and director Steve Concotelli has shared the trailer on his YouTube page (via /Film). The version that'll appear on the Blu-ray is a shorter version than the full feature the filmmakers intended, and they raised money through Kickstarter for a feature-length movie that they're still working on. But, like all of us, they're slaves to time: since October 21st is Back to the Future Day and the Blu-ray release is coming out, they had to put out a shorter version perhaps a bit quicker than they would have liked. Check out the trailer below:

Structurally, this seems like it has a lot in common with American Chopper or one of those shows on the Discovery Channel or TLC: a bunch of talking heads, shots of people working on the restoration in a workshop, you know the drill. But for those who are obsessed with BTTF and can't get enough, the movie may be worth a watch.

THE FLASH Will Reportedly Have a "Tech Based" Suit in New Movie

the-flash-will-reportedly-have-a-tech-based-suit-in-new-movie

Not too long ago, Ezra Miller reportedly offered some details about the suit that The Flash will wear in the upcoming movie. Apparently the superhero will be wearing a post-apocalyptic-style suit, and thanks to Den of Geek, we have some additional information that is in line with that information.

The report says that in an effort to set the film design apart from the TV suit design, the studio is going to create a more "tech-based" suit that will look very different. Their inside source says that this version will look more "like armor." They go on to compare it the character design that was created for the video game Injustice: Gods Among Us. I imagine there will be more to it than that, though.

As far as the look goes, it will obviously have the same aesthetic as the other superhero costumes that we've seen for Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, and Aquaman. The source also tells them that Miller's version of Barry Allen will be more of a "tech geek," which makes sense. Allen has always been kind of geek!

Seth Grahame-Smith will be directing the movie from a story treatment written by Phil Lord and Chris Miller. Grahame-Smith will also be writing the script based on the story that Lord and Miller came up with.

I'm really enjoying The Flash series, and it will be interesting to see how this movie turns out! It will be released on March 23rd, 2018.

James Cameron Nerds Out While Announcing AVATAR Comics

$

Over the past several years, the geek community has grown from an insular community into an increasingly inclusive one, embracing its members' inner weirdness and openly celebrating it at places like conventions around the country. If someone wants to cosplay as an obscure character from a comic, that's great — that's now run-of-the-mill behavior. Geeks have taken over pop culture.

I'm totally cool with all of that. But I have to say that James Cameron looks like a giant freakin' nerd in this new video from EW, in which he announces that he's teaming with Dark Horse Comics to release Avatar comics that take place before, during, and after the events of the original movie. I'm aware that he's addressing the people of New York Comic Con here — probably the audience he thinks will most appreciate this level of detail in a speech — but greeting the audience by speaking the Na'vi language seems so nerdy to me. If I saw a fan of Avatar speaking that language, I wouldn't say anything. That's a totally different thing, and it wouldn't even phase me. But when it comes directly from Cameron, delivered in this specific way, it just sort of makes me roll my eyes a little. Don't feel too bad for him, though: he's reportedly worth around $700 million, so I think he can probably handle it when I poke a little fun at him. (South Park has already done a great job of that.)

Anyway, check out his announcement below, and I'll be interested to hear if comic fans are planning on getting into this series since it's been six years since Avatar was in theaters.

Avatar 2, 3, and 4 are scheduled to arrive in theaters in 2017, 2018, and 2019, respectively.

Bryan Cranston Wants to Play a "Nasty" Marvel Villain

Anyone want to see Bryan Cranston play a Marvel villain!? I know I would! It would be so cool to see him take on a villainous role in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Not only is this something that a lot of his fans would love to see, but Cranston himself wants to see it happen! In an interview with Metro, at the London Film Festival premiere of his new movie Trumbo, the actor said:

"You know what I'd like to do? I'd like to do some big superhero villain in some Marvel classic. Create one from scratch… I don’t know what I would do but it would be nasty."

Marvel Studio president Kevin Feige always seems like he's up to date on all the internet fan talk, and he does see when certain actors and actresses say they are interested in jumping into the Marvel universe. Who knows, maybe this comment from Cranston could eventually lead to a meeting. When talking about the casting process for Marvel films, Feige has said:

"For us, it's sitting down with people and starting to meet people and as the script takes shape and as we start to build who the character should be and finding the right person to match it up. We haven't necessarily started sitting down with people yet and meeting on that part."

With so many Marvel movies in the works, I'm sure that they could find a villain for Cranston to take on somewhere down the road. Are there any Marvel villains that you think Cranston would be perfect for?

Brie Larson Replacing Jennifer Lawrence in THE GLASS CASTLE

$

Three years ago, Jennifer Lawrence was attached to star in a film adaptation of The Glass Castle, writer Jeannette Walls' memoir that detailed her wildly unconventional upbringing. But because the project has taken so long to get going, Lawrence had to drop out, and THR reports that another mega-talented young star, Brie Larson, is stepping in to take her place. This will be a reunion between the actress and director Destin Daniel Cretton, who helmed Short Term 12, the indie that put Larson on the map. Marti Noxon wrote the first draft of the script with Cretton, and Andrew Lanham came on board for rewrites.

If Lawrence had to go, I can't imagine a better replacement than Larson. She's a terrific actress and a rising star, and I can't wait to see her (by all accounts amazing) work in Room later when that hits limited release on October 16th. This is the second time recently that she's taken over a project another actress bailed out of: a couple of weeks ago, she replaced Emma Stone in the tennis movie Battle of the Sexes. Looks like everything's comin' up Brie.

Check out the full description of the The Glass Castle below:

Jeannette Walls grew up with parents whose ideals and stubborn nonconformity were both their curse and their salvation. Rex and Rose Mary Walls had four children. In the beginning, they lived like nomads, moving among Southwest desert towns, camping in the mountains. Rex was a charismatic, brilliant man who, when sober, captured his children's imagination, teaching them physics, geology, and above all, how to embrace life fearlessly. Rose Mary, who painted and wrote and couldn't stand the responsibility of providing for her family, called herself an "excitement addict." Cooking a meal that would be consumed in fifteen minutes had no appeal when she could make a painting that might last forever.
Later, when the money ran out, or the romance of the wandering life faded, the Walls retreated to the dismal West Virginia mining town -- and the family -- Rex Walls had done everything he could to escape. He drank. He stole the grocery money and disappeared for days. As the dysfunction of the family escalated, Jeannette and her brother and sisters had to fend for themselves, supporting one another as they weathered their parents' betrayals and, finally, found the resources and will to leave home.

In the process, he explains that Batman would never be able to beat Superman and that he thinks a fight between Batman and Iron Man would be a lot more awesome to watch. That would definitely make for an interesting and better matched battle! But he thinks Batman would lose that one as well. I guess Tyson isn't really a Batman fan! Ubisoft Compares ASSASSIN'S CREED Film to BATMAN BEGINS and BLADE RUNNER

Ubisoft's Assassin's Creed movie has spent years in development, and we've heard about how the company is really taking its time and giving its properties the time they deserve to get the script to a good place instead of just rushing into production in order to capitalize on name recognition. It's clear that they actually want to make good movies, and we'll find out whether they succeeded when Assassin's Creed arrives in theaters on December 21st, 2016.

In an interview with the French Premiere magazine (via /Film), Ubisoft Motion Pictures CEO Jean-Julien Barronet spoke about the company's mindset with regards to Assassin's Creed and the other long-in-the-works film they have in development, Splinter Cell. Here's a translated quote:

"We want to try to prove that the adaptations of cinema video games can be good projects. Until now, it was licensing purchases - so the studios that were unfamiliar culture and DNA of the game - and that frustrated fans. Or gaming companies who thought that because they knew playmaking, they knew how to make films. But this is not the same. By taking the initiative to create this structure dedicated to the cinema - with only film people - we want to show that we have the closeness with the players and the specific know-how that allows us to produce it. That's why creative control is essential for us. We have creative control as we choose the main actors, directors, budget, the scenario ... It's a package that we present and studios take it or not. But the amount will still be paid. We also have the final cut, even if we do not fund mainly the film. They preferred not to film rather than not having that creative control. Of course, we work closely with the studios. They have an incredibly strong expertise on production. But it is a safeguard. If ever there was a slip that would bring the film to a direction that does not suit us, we can put a veto. And in Ubisoft's history of loving change the rules of the game and we want to do that too in film. Usually in Hollywood, when you develop a big film, you start with a script or studio ... We did not do that. We said: "For each film, what is the first decision that we have to take?" In Assassin's Creed, it was obvious that the first decision was the choice of the actor. Who is behind the assassin, who will personify? In Splinter Cell, the same thing is going to be Sam Fisher? The obsession that we had was to find actors among the best, if not the best."

That's cool to hear that they have final cut on their projects. It seems like Ubisoft is being incredibly smart about bringing their franchises to the big screen, and I appreciate the way they're really taking their time to make sure everything is sound from a story perspective before moving forward. Barronet went on to talk about why stars like Michael Fassbender and Tom Hardy found the way they work so appealing, and it has a lot to do with — you guessed it — creative control. He also compared the upcoming Assassin's Creed movie to Batman Begins and Blade Runner:

"[Fassbender] accepted very quickly. And it was the only actor which we thought was obvious. So we started with the actor, which is incongruous. Even more incongruous, he engaged us with nothing. There was no script, no studio or anything. We told him we were going to build the project together, we have a huge brand and we want to make a make a film with references to feature films like Batman Begins and Blade Runner. That is why we tend to. He was promised that he could work with the writers, we would associate it with all key creative choices. This is obviously attractive for intelligent players like Michael Fassbender and Tom Hardy. It is like a huge studio because it has huge brand, but it is a small structure. And it will remain like that, you do not want to become bigger. Tom Hardy was also evident on Splinter Cell. We had the same discussion and it is also committed immediately. Tom is a gamer and he loves the world of Splinter Cell. We worked a lot with him on the character."

There's a lot more to read in Premiere's (huge) interview, but the iffy English translation means it isn't an easy thing to go through. The most important points to take away from this, though, is that these guys aren't messing around when it comes to their beloved properties, and it appears that Assassin's Creed has a good shot at legitimately becoming the first truly great video game movie.

Justin Kurzel will direct, and the film stars Fassbender, Marion Cotillard, Michael K. Williams, Ariane Labed, Brendan Gleeson, and Jeremy Irons.

Disney's Live-Action Cruella de Vil Movie Finds a New Screenwriter

$

Back in 2013, Disney announced that they would be developing a new live-action adaptation of Cruella de Vil from 101 Dalmations called Cruella. There really hasn't been any news regarding the movie since that announcement. The movie has since found itself a screenwriter. That writer is Kelly Marcel, who wrote an amazing script for Saving Mr. Banks and a downright awful script for Fifty Shades of Grey. In her defense, she didn't have much to work with in regards to the shitty source material for the latter. Marcel is also working on developing the story with Togetherness co-creator Steve Zissis. The first version of the script was written by Aline Brosh McKenna.

According to THR, Disney is putting the project on the fast track to development. This comes shortly after the studio announced the release dates for four untitled live-action films that will be based on their animated films. That's in addition to The Jungle BookAlice Through the Looking Glass, and Beauty and the Beast. Those four new films are scheduled to be released on December 22nd, 2017; November 2nd, 2018; March 29th, 2019; and November 18th, 2019.

I imagine they'll turn the villain into a protagonist, just like they did with Maleficent. We're getting all of these live-action adaptations on Disney properties, yet they still won't make Tron 3. In my opinion, Tron 3 seems like it would be a much better project than Cruella
