The Science Behind Why Pixar Movies Make You Cry - Comedy Sketch

$

Above Average has released a funny comedy sketch that gives you a behind-the-scenes look at Pixar's SadLab, which is "a laboratory dedicated to discovering new ways of making audiences cry as much as possible." The sketch is called Pixar's SadLab: The Science Of Making You Cry, and it was directed by Tim Bierbaum from a script written by Glenn Boozan. It's not hard to believe that Pixar actually has one of these Sadlabs on their studio campus.

TRANSFORMERS Writers Room Creates Pitches For Five More Potential Films

Paramount has big plans for its Transformers franchise, and the studio recently created a writers room (similar to the ones that work for TV shows) to generate ideas for more movies. Batman & Robin writer Akiva Goldsman led the group, which also included people like The Walking Dead's Robert Kirkman, The Amazing Spider-Man 2 writer Jeff Pinkner, and many more. Now Deadline is reporting that "the experiment is over" and the results have come in.

Since recent reports of the storyline for Transformers 5 seem to have been completely fabricated (as I suspected in my write-up; I was seemingly the only person who even cared to check the questionable sourcing on that story), it seems like they're working from a fresh slate. Goldsman now reportedly has enough to write Transformers 5 for star Mark Wahlberg, and it's intended for Bay to come back to direct with production beginning in June of next year, although the director hasn't been officially confirmed yet. Ant-Man production writers Andrew Barrer and Gabriel Ferrari are now definitely writing an animated prequel, confirming a story from a few months ago, and though nine pitches were ultimately made to the big bosses, executive producer Steven Spielberg didn't think there was enough story there to support all of them:

I had heard they discovered that some of the ideas didn’t sustain full features and that maybe the universe wasn’t as big as suspected, but insiders say that when all the pitches and treatments were reviewed, that Spielberg felt there were potential movies in five of the nine. They haven’t committed to anything now. What they’ll do now is plant seeds from all of the ideas into the Transformers sequel that Goldsman is writing — the one that is expected to be the last one that Bay directs himself.

Yeah, that's just great — go ahead and plant seeds in this movie that may never ultimately be answered, because that worked out so well for The Amazing Spider-Man franchise. What a nightmare this franchise turned out to be. But it continues to make major money for Paramount, so unless people suddenly stop paying to see these movies (I'm begging you all: please stop paying to see these movies), the studio is going to continue to put resources into making them that could be far better spent on other projects.

A JEOPARDY Contestant Made Alex Trebek Say "Turd Ferguson" On The Air

I remember watching Saturday Night Live during Will Ferrell's run in the late '90s and early 2000s, and the Celebrity Jeopardy! sketches were always my favorite. Darrell Hammond's masterful Sean Connery impression and his mean-spirited banter with Ferrell's flustered version of host Alex Trebek always cracked me up, but there's one sketch in particular that's stood out to fans over the years. In 1999, Norm Macdonald portrayed a heightened version of actor Burt Reynolds who demanded to be referred to as "Turd Ferguson" just to further fluster Ferrell's Trebek. Catch up with it below if it's been a while:

So great.

Anyway, on a recent episode of the real Jeopardy, a contestant took a cue from that SNL sketch and...well, take a look at what happened:

(In case the video gets taken down or something, a contestant wrote "The Love Ballad of Turd Ferguson" as her answer, and Trebek read it aloud before informing her it was incorrect.)

Turns out Trebek didn't get the joke because he apparently didn't remember the SNL bit (how could he not remember it?!). Oh well — still a great moment. I wonder if Norm Macdonald has seen this yet.

STAR WARS REBELS Creatives Talk About The Clones Coming in Season 2

Star Wars Rebels is adding a few recognizable characters in season 2 for those who are familiar with Clone Wars, and in a new behind-the-scenes video, executive producer Dave Filoni and voice actor Dee Bradley Baker talk all about the reaction to the news from fans at Celebration, the revelations of the coming season, and more. Star Wars Rebels will debut its second season on October 14th.

Clone troopers were first introduced in Star Wars: Attack of the Clones as highly-skilled combatants that followed any order without questioning its morality. But that has slowly changed over the years, most notably with the character of Captain Rex in Star Wars: The Clone Wars. Now everyone’s favorite clone is set to make his debut in Star Wars Rebels, and alongside him are two more Republic veterans who also don’t exactly see eye-to-eye with the Empire.

Dave Filoni, executive producer of Star Wars Rebels, talks at length about the grizzled soldiers that Ahsoka Tano sent the Ghost crew to look for and who will eventually come into conflict with Kanan -- the fugitive Jedi who watched so many of his friends die at the hands of clone troopers during Order 66.

Veteran Star Wars actor Dee Bradley Baker discusses the challenge of playing three different characters with conflicting personalities, and what he brought to each voice to make them stand out as individuals.

Video: Visual Similarities Between ESCAPE FROM NEW YORK and ESCAPE FROM L.A.

John Carpenter's Escape From New York is so good, it's easy to sort of forget about just how awful Escape From L.A. is in comparison. The sequel came out fifteen years after the original, and it's almost embarrassing when you look back on it now. I've seen Escape From New York a bunch of times, but could only bring myself to watch Escape From L.A. once. Maybe that's why I'm so surprised at whoispablo's latest video, which shows off the visual similarities between the two films. He's done with this Star Wars and Indiana Jones already, and it's cool to see the same things reflected throughout a series over the years (sometimes even down to the same shot). Check it out for yourselves below:

Michael Bay Hasn't Committed To Directing TRANSFORMERS 5 Yet

$

Earlier this afternoon, I wrote an update about the state of the Transformers franchise, and for those who are too lazy or busy to read it, the important bullet points are as follows: the film franchise's writers room has finished pitching ideas, Steven Spielberg thinks there may be as many as five potential films to come out of it, Batman & Robin writer Akiva Goldsman now has enough material to begin writing Transformers 5 for star Mark Wahlberg, and a couple of Ant-Man writers are confirmed to be writing an animated prequel film.

One thing that's not confirmed, however, as I mentioned in my original piece, is the director of Transformers 5. Deadline and many others have been writing with near certainty that Michael Bay would come back to the helm one more time, but Bay himself has now taken to Twitter to clarify that he hasn't made up his mind yet:

Frankly, I really hope he stays far away from this sequel and moves on to other things. I'd much rather see him making films like Pain & Gain or even his upcoming 13 Hours thank a fifth movie in this now-disastrous franchise. He's been interested in making a movie about the illegal hunting of elephants, and with the big stir about Cecil the Lion recently, maybe now is the time for him to go off and make a film that actually has something to say instead of doing yet another of those godawful Transformers movies.

Traditional Media's Fight to Discredit Online Content

$

One could obviously say I'm biased on this front, but I consume pretty much all of my content online. I haven't had a cable connection in my home, ever. (Save when I lived at home.) The internet is my only form of entertainment. And on this crazy sea known as the World Wide Web, roughly 90% of the content I consume is created by other writers, bloggers, and video creators like myself. So when Game Theory's Mathew Patrick posted a video about traditional print and televised media doing their damnedest to discredit online creators, I slapped on my tinfoil hat and readied my rally cry.

I might not be a particularly big fan of PewDiePie and his bro-fisting antics, but damn it I respect what he does. I can be okay with him being the face of the growing gaming community. I could go on and on about my feelings on the subject (and even did in a very ranty, angsty blog post I made back in college), but MatPat does it some pretty good justice. So instead, give the video a watch and join the revolution!

3 Directors Up For TOMB RAIDER Movie Reboot

Warner Bros. and MGM are looking to get the Tomb Raider movie reboot on the fast track to production, and according to The Tracking Board there are three directors the studios are looking at to take it on. Those directors are Kathryn Bigelow (The Hurt Locker, Zero Dark Thirty), Catherine Hardwicke (Lords of Dogtown, Twilight), and Mimi Leder (The Peacemaker, Deep Impact).

Zero-Dark-Thirty_08-ehle-skip.jpg
large_hardwicke.jpg
mimi-leder.1.jpg

According to the report, Tricia Brock (The Walking Dead) was originally offered the opportunity to direct the film, but apparently she passed on it. Whoever jumps on to direct the film will direct from a script written by Evan Daugherty (Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Divergent).

Out of the three directors who are up for the gig, the best one is obviously Academy Award winner Kathryn Bigelow. She's such a smart and talented director, though, that she would probably who pass on it if they made an offer. That is unless they give her free reign to do something completely badass with it. I wouldn't expect to see much from the other two directors as most of their movies are mediocre.

Tomb Raider is based on the video game franchise that centers on Lara Croft, an archeologist who travels the world hunting down priceless artifacts. It always turns out to be a hair-raising adventure for her where death lurks around every corner.

I'm a big fan of the Tomb Raider game franchise, and it would be nice to see the character get a decent film. Right now Bigelow is their best option, if they lose her, then I won't be expecting much from this movie. I'd be way excited if she did take the job, though!

Funny MUPPETS Emmy Promo - Power Lunch with Kermit and Miss Piggy

Though it's not long after their break-up announcement, Kermit and Miss Piggy appear together in a new promo for the Emmy Awards. It features a few cameos from people who have been nominated this year, and if you're a fan of The Muppets, then you'll probably really enjoy this.

After their highly publicized break up, Kermit the Frog and Miss Piggy meet to discuss their new show at a power lunch spot in LA. See what happens when they find themselves amongst Emmy nominated actors – from Miss Piggy's confrontations with Julie Bowen and Viola Davis to a friendly consolation of Kermit by Joel McHale.

The Muppets is set to premiere on ABC new week, so this promo is just kind of priming of the pump for that. Here is some information on the upcoming series that has been released:

Shot in a handheld style similar to The Office, the new The Muppets series is a mockumentary chronicling the day-to-day duties of the Kermit and co. during production of “Up Late with Miss Piggy,” a late-night talk show starring Miss Piggy. For the first time ever, a series will explore the Muppets’ personal lives and relationships, both at home and at work, as well as romances, breakups, achievements, disappointments, wants and desires.
In the pilot episode, titled “Pig Girls Don’t Cry,” Miss Piggy is furious that Kermit booked Elizabeth Banks as a guest on her late night talk show while Fozzie Bear meets his girlfriend’s parents, and Grammy Award-winning rock band Imagine Dragons performs their new single “Roots.”
The following week’s episode, airing September 29, is titled “Hostile Makeover.” In the episode, Kermit, in an attempt to make Miss Piggy happy, sets her up with Josh Groban who fills her head with ideas on how to make "Up Late with Miss Piggy" better. Meanwhile, Fozzie is invited to a party at Jay Leno’s house and everyone is annoyed that Bobo is selling cookies for his daughter’s troop.

The show was co-created by Bill Prady (The Big Bang Theory) and Bob Kushell (The Simpsons), and it will premiere on September 22nd on ABC.

STAR TREK BEYOND Has a New Release Date

Paramount Pictures has moved the release date for Justin Lin's Star Trek Beyond from July 8th, 2016 to July 22nd. The movie is currently in production, and the reason that the release of the film was pushed back was so that it could be released on more IMAX theaters. Apparently, on July 8 the majority of the IMAX theaters will be filled with Warner Bros. Tarzan movie. Now the film will open up alongside films such as 20th Century Fox’s Ice Age: Collusion Course and Warner Bros.’ Guy Ritchie-directed King Arthur.

Star Trek Beyond will be released in time for the 50-year anniversary of the launch of the classic sci-fi TV series, which debuted on September 8th, 1966. I'm curious to see how this new movie turns out, especially with Lin at the helm and a script that was written by Simon Pegg

SAM WILSON, CAPTAIN AMERICA #1 Preview

There was no one better suited to take up the mantle of Captain America than Sam Wilson, which is why Steve Rodgers offered it to him after the events that aged him to his rightful age. Thing is, a lot of things can happen in eight months, and in that time something has come between these two allies and, most of al,l best friends.

In Sam Wilson, Captain America, writer Nick Spencer and artist Daniel Acuna are going to fill in the gaps along the way. Pitting two former friends against each other isn't anything new, but the friendship between these two has always been so ironclad that seeing what could actually drive them apart has me intrigued. Could it be that Steve is having a hard time adjusting to not being Cap? Guess we will see.

Acuna's art has always been hit and miss with me, but from the panels above, I think his style fits extremely well here. Also, any excuse to see more Misty Knight in action is always a good thing.

You can catch the launch variants in the gallery below and can pick up the core issue when Sam Wilson, Captain America releases on October 14.

Artist Andry Shango has released a new art series based on his first experience with each console. Granted, not every console is listed, but I loved the idea. We love to list the best games of a console's lifecycle, but that doesn't necessarily mean it was your favorite, and typically it is not going to be your first experience with a new system. Andry's art is just so unique, so if you like what you see, you can head to his Deviant Art page here to check out the rest of his gallery.

In the meantime, here is my list.

Greg Berlanti to Direct BOOSTER GOLD/BLUE BEETLE Movie for WB

$

0

Warner Bros. is in the process of developing a big screen adaptation of DC Comics' Booster Gold and Blue Beetle. The news comes from The Tracking Board, who also reports that Greg Berlanti will be directing the feature. He developed Arrow and The Flash for The CW. In a separate report from Heroic Hollywood, it is being reported that Zak Penn is in talks to write the film. Penn has worked on several Marvel movies over the years including The Avengers, The Incredible Hulk, a few X-Men films, and more.

This seems like a pretty solid team to bring these two characters to life on the big screen. It's been rumored for awhile that the characters would appear in a movie or TV series. Booster Gold was on the verge of getting his own series back in the days of Smallville, and later on even the SyFy Channel was seriously at looking at making a series. Now they are going to team up for a feature film adventure. The site says:

"In a massively different approach from Warner’s current slate, the film will team the two heroes together in what’s being pitched as a superhero buddy cop movie. Comedy is the emphasis here, which is a stark contrast to the other titles in DC’s Cinematic Universe, breaking the mold of the uber serious and grounded Man of Steel and Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice."

For those of you not really familiar with these characters, here's a little background info:

“Booster Gold, AKA Michael Jon Carter, was a football hero and celebrity in the 25th Century who became publicly disgraced after he was caught gambling on his own games. With his reputation tarnished, Carter stole super-powered relics from the past and traveled back in time, with the plan to become a famous superhero. Though he began cocky, Booster eventually became a real hero.

Jamie Reyes is a teenager from El Paso, TX who, one night, fused with a piece of alien technology called the Scarab that was sent to Earth from an ancient cosmic race. The Scarab gives its host extraordinary powers and becomes a suit that equips the user with the ability to fly and a slew of other powers. The technology was sent under the guise of helping budding civilizations, but the Scarab’s true mission was to slowly overtake the host’s consciousness and take over the world. Due to damage from the journey, the technology and its powers fuse symbiotically with Reyes–with Reyes’ consciousness intact. Reyes then uses the suit to fight crime as the Blue Beetle.

Booster and Blue Beetle frequently partner up in the comics and are close allies, often pulled into more comedic shenanigans. The dynamic duo are also members of the Justice League and are being planted now to appear in a future JL movie down the road.”

There's no word on casting, but a few weeks ago Nathan Fillion said that he wants to play Booster Gold! I think WB should take him up on that. I would love to see Fillion in the role of Booster Gold, and so would fans!

In case you missed it, we also have an article that we posted awhile back called 5 Reasons Booster Gold Is a Badass. You should check it out if you haven't already!

This movie could turn out to be great, and I'm curious to see who they actually end up casting in the lead roles. I've definitely got my fingers crossed for Fillion, though.

Jamie Lee Curtis Recreates Her Mom's Iconic Shower Scene from PSYCHO

For those of you who don't know, Jamie Lee Curtis' mother is Janet Leigh, who played Marion Crane in Alfred Hitchcock's classic 1960 psychological horror thriller Psycho. It's kinda cool that Curtis went on to also become a horror icon when she starred in John Carpenter's Halloween. The two actually appeared on screen together in Halloween: H20

In the upcoming Fox series Scream Queens, Curtis recreated her mom's legendary shower scene from Psycho, and she released the image above giving us our first look. It's perfect, and it's so cool that she got an opportunity to do something like this. The photo came with the following caption:

TAKEN Is Getting a Prequel TV Series

Luc Besson and Liam Neeson’s action film franchise Taken is headed to the small screen. In the films, Neeson plays a retired CIA operative who goes ballistic whenever someone in his family is “taken” by bad guys. Poor bastard just has the worst luck ever with his family members being taken.

The series is set up at NBC, and Besson is set to produce it. The series will serve as a prequel that centers around a young Bryan Mills, so don’t expect Neeson to reprise his role. He won’t have a wife or daughter to save in the series. I’m sure he’ll be saving others people lives, though, including his own.

Deadline has all the details on the series saying, “the character played by Neeson in the movies is a young man with no wife and kids. The logline of the series pays an homage to the movies as it references one of the films’ most popular quotes, part of Mill’s famous speech to one of the thugs suspected in the kidnapping of his daughter, ‘What I do have are a very particular set of skills, skills I have acquired over a very long career; Skills that make me a nightmare for people like you.’ The series will focus on how Mills acquires his ‘very particular set of skills’ and becomes the character we all know. The series will bend time as it will be set in modern day, not decades in the past.”

I loved the first Taken movie, but they kind of went downhill from there. I think the series has potential be cool! Hopefully, they'll bring in the right talent to develop a solid series.

Benson and NBC are currently on the hunt for a writer and showrunner to lead the charge on the series.

Brad Bird’s Passionate Stance on Traditional Animation and Animated Horror

$
0
0

With Brad Bird’s The Iron Giant: Signature Edition being released soon, director Brad Bird is making the press rounds to promote it. The Iron Giant was one of the last great traditionally animated films. Those have now become a rarity. Studios don’t want to make them anymore because CG animation has taken over the business, and it’s sad.

In an interview with Collider, Bird says that he hopes to direct another hand-drawn animated film one day and that he’d also like to see a traditionally animated horror film someday, which would be amazing! When asked about his thoughts on 2D animation he says,

“I actually think it’s a lot more valid than other people do. I think the industry tends to like to think in the narrow sort of mindset of a businessman, and businessman absolutes, and movies really exist in a much grayer region of dreams and stuff like that, and instinct is prized in movies, it’s not prized with the businessmen in movies, but movies themselves often reward instinct rather than pie charts. And what has not been done is that there’s been no American animation done on Disney-level quality that has really gone into different genres.”

I personally prefer hand-drawn animation over CG. There's something more pure and soulful about it. Not everything needs to have that sharp and clean look at the CG animation provides. I would love to see Pixar one day create a hand-drawn animated film one day because there’s no doubt they would do something amazing. Bird goes on to talk about that hand-drawn animated horror film he'd like to see:

“For instance, there’s never been a horror movie in animation executed at Disney-level quality and hand-drawn, I’m not talking about CG I’m talking about hand-drawn, but it doesn’t take a lot to imagine how cool that would be. If you think of the scariest parts of Snow White or Pinocchio or Fantasia with Night on Bald Mountain, you could do something really scary in animation and I think if you did it right, if you did it with all the art that Spielberg did Jaws, I think that it would be an amazing experience because there’s something intuitive about when people are drawing directly with their hands.”

That would be spectacular. It would be an incredible thing to see an animated horror movie with the kind of quality he is talking about. He goes on to explain what it would take to see something like that happen:

“The problem is that every time people have deviated from the Disney playbook in hand-drawn animation, they’ve done so with staff that are nowhere near Disney-level talent or Disney-level budgets. So you have things like Heavy Metal, which not all of them are great, but a couple of them are really interesting, but they didn’t have the money or the artists to pull them off at the level that maybe they should’ve been pulled off. Where as in live-action film there are all kinds of new films being done in different genres where people can really execute an idea at a top level.
“It’s just that animation rewards grooming a team and keeping a team in place. That’s why when studios try to emulate Disney on the quick-and-cheap they always fail, because Disney has refined their animation team over years, they have a history of it, people go to Disney and know that there’s going to be a job after the movie, there’s going to be another movie. And when you assemble animation teams the way you do a live-action film, you’re often struggling a bit to get a cohesive team together, so if you have a team that works well together, you’re hoping for another film so that you can refine the team.”

In regards to making another traditionally animated movie some day, he says:

“But for someone like me who wants to move back and forth between animation and live-action, that becomes its own challenge, but I absolutely think that hand-drawn animation is valid and I actually hope to do one in the future with a large budget and a longer schedule than we had on Iron Giant.”

You know what? If Laika Studios can pump out one great stop-motion animated film after another, why can someone start a traditional animation studio with the caliber of talent that Bird is talking about here? It’s possible! Laika has also had fun making horror type animated films as well, so it’s very possible that one day we could see a hand-drawn animated film rise from the ashes and blow people away!

At long last, Spider-Man will be introduced into the Marvel Cinematic Universe with Joe and Anthony Russo's Captain America: Civil War. There have been a lot of rumors regarding the character in the film that you can catch up on here

We now have a new bit of rumored information to add to the pile! The following information comes from Heroic Hollywood and it tells us how long Peter Parker has been Spider-Man before we meet him in Civil War.

"According to sources, the latest rumor is that Peter Parker has been active as Spider-Man for a little over a year during the events of Captain America: Civil War. Just like Batman in Batman v Superman: Dawn Of Justice, Spider-Man is considered a myth, an urban legend."

By the time the Spider-Man solo film is released in 2017, Peter Parker will have been active as Spider-Man for two years. It's not an Earth-shattering piece of info, but it's enough to hold a fan like myself over until we actually get to see a photo of Tom Holland as Spider-Man, or anything else from the movie!

Captain America: Civil War will be released on May 6th, 2016.
