new-tv-spot-images-and-poster-for-ridley-scotts-the-martian-im-alive

Ridley Scott’s The Martian looks like it has all the makings of a big hit movie. Everything that I’ve seen from this movie looks freakin’ fantastic, and I’m very excited to see how the story plays out. Today we have a new TV spot, a couple of images, and a new poster for the film for you to check out.

During a manned mission to Mars, Astronaut Mark Watney (Matt Damon) is presumed dead after a fierce storm and left behind by his crew. But Watney has survived and finds himself stranded and alone on the hostile planet. With only meager supplies, he must draw upon his ingenuity, wit and spirit to subsist and find a way to signal to Earth that he is alive. Millions of miles away, NASA and a team of international scientists work tirelessly to bring “the Martian” home, while his crewmates concurrently plot a daring, if not impossible rescue mission. As these stories of incredible bravery unfold, the world comes together to root for Watney’s safe return.

The film is based on a best-selling novel, which I won’t read because I don’t want to ruin the movie for myself. The Martian features a wonderful cast that also includes Jessica Chastain, Kristen Wiig, Kate Mara, Michael Pena, Jeff Daniels, Chiwetel Ejiofor, and Donald Glover.

The film is set to be released on October 2nd.

Clip from the Superhero-Themed Adaptation of JEKYLL & HYDE

Robert Louis Stevenson's Strange Case of Doctor Jekyll & Mr. Hyde is getting an action-packed superhero makeover. It's called Jekyll & Hyde, and it's a 10-episode miniseries that is being developed by Charlie Higson. Today we have a clip from the series for you to watch, and as you'll see, it was influenced by Guy Ritchie's Sherlock Holmes films.

Higson’s Jekyll (Tom Bateman) is a young, sensitive and naïve man of intellect and morality, a well meaning if slightly repressed character who slips between his two personas unwillingly. Hyde is a totally different person; a superhero with super powers, great strength, speed and invulnerability. He is confident, risk-taking and lives life on the edge. His self-destructive nature gets him into trouble, and yet he is an incredibly powerful force. He is a man of action who gets things done despite the consequences! Throughout the series we will witness Jekyll wrestling with the dark, brooding personality of Hyde as he struggles to come to terms with his superhero alter ego.

The series is being produced by ITV, and all ten episodes that were directed by Colin Teague (Being Human, Sinbad). The series is expected to premiere sometime this fall. It looks like it might be worth checking out!

The Monsters Are Unleashed in New GOOSEBUMPS International Trailer

According to Jack Black's fictionalized version of R.L. Stine, every good story has a beginning, a middle, and a twist. I'm sure sure M. Night Shyamalan would wholeheartedly agree with him. We have a new international trailer for the film to share with you that offers us a bit of new footage from the film, some of which includes the monsters that are unleashed and causing chaos.

The film seems to be getting a good amount of buzz from fans online. I'll be taking my kids to go see the movie, so for my sake, and the sake of all the other parents who will be taking their kids to see this movie, I hope it's entertaining.

Upset about moving from a big city to a small town, teenager Zach Cooper (Dylan Minnette) finds a silver lining when he meets the beautiful girl, Hannah (Odeya Rush), living right next door. But every silver lining has a cloud, and Zach’s comes when he learns that Hannah has a mysterious dad who is revealed to be R. L. Stine (Jack Black), the author of the bestselling Goosebumps series. It turns out that there is a reason why Stine is so strange… he is a prisoner of his own imagination – the monsters that his books made famous are real, and Stine protects his readers by keeping them locked up in their books. When Zach unintentionally unleashes the monsters from their manuscripts and they begin to terrorize the town, it’s suddenly up to Stine, Zach, and Hannah to get all of them back in the books where they belong.

The movie was directed by Rob Letterman (Shark TaleGulliver’s Travels), but it seems to have a Joe Dante kind of feel to it. That just might be because of the subject matter. Goosebumps opens up in theaters on October 16th.

Check out this beautiful illustartion that tells the entire story of Mad Max: Fury Road in the form of Egyptian hieroglyphics. It was created by an artist named Takumi, and if you've seen the movie, then you'll notice certain aspects of the film. If you haven't seen the movie, then it probably won't make much sense to you. Either way, this is a great concept that was executed wonderfully.

Supercut of Point of View Shots Used in Coen Bros. Movies

Filmmaker Jacob T. Swinney has released a video essay that explores POV shots used by Joel and Ethan Coen in their films. These shots give help their films that distinctive style that we all love about their movies. They are two of the greateststorytellers of our era. They constantly make one great film after another, so it is cool to see a fan make a video like this that highlights one of their many styles.

“With a filmography that covers everything from westerns and gangster flicks to comedies and film noir, it can be rather difficult to pinpoint what exactly contributes to the style of Joel and Ethan Coen. While there are reoccurring themes and ideas that surface throughout the filmmakers' work, a consistent visual aesthetic is not easily recognized. What makes a Coen Brothers film look like a Coen Brothers film? One stylistic element that seems to be rather prominent in all their films is the POV shot. The Coens tend to utilize the POV shot to better submerse us in a scene, but the shot is often used to simply give us a unique perspective that can only be created through cinema. Here is a look at the Coens' use of the POV shot throughout their career. MUSIC: 'The Man in Me' by Bob Dylan.”

Legendary Horror Film Director Wes Craven Has Passed Away

I hate to start the week off with sad news, but if you already didn't hear, director Wes Craven died on Sunday. Craven is the director behind such horror film classics as A Nightmare on Elm Street and Scream. He was 76 years old, and he passed away after a battle with brain cancer.

I had no idea that the director was battling brain cancer, and as a longtime fan of his films, I couldn't be more shocked and sad to hear this news. Craven was storytelling genius when it came to his horror movies.

The director's first feature film was The Last House on the Left, and some of my favorite movies that followed were The Hills Have Eyes, Swamp Thing, A Nightmare on Elm Street, The Serpent and the Rainbow, The People Under the Stairs, and all of the Scream movies.

Freddy Krueger and Ghostface have become two of the most iconic horror film characters ever put on the big screen. Hell, the guy basically invented the teenage horror genre and then turned it on its head when he made Scream. The last movie that Craven directed was Scream 4 in 2011.

Even though he's mostly known for his work in horror, he also directed drama called Music of the Heart, which earned Meryl Streep an Academy Award nomination for best actress. That film followed the story of a school teacher who struggled to teach violin to kids in Harlem.

Craven died at his home in Los Angeles, and he is survived by his wife, producer and former Disney Studios VP Iya Labunka. Our hearts and prayers go out to Craven's family and friends, and he will be missed.

Thank you, Wes Craven, for scaring the shit out of us over the years.

Watch Teens React to FIVE NIGHTS AT FREDDY’S 4

The Fine Bros. have released another episode of React, which gives us humorous look at the reactions of teens as the play the popular horror video game Five Nights at Freddy’s 4. My kids love playing this game, and it’s kind of fun to watch them freak out while playing it. I’ve got to say though, the reactions of these teenagers is even funnier because they seem to get more scared by the game than my kids do.

Interesting Fan Theory Makes Joker the Hero of THE DARK KNIGHT

interesting-fan-theory-makes-joker-the-hero-of-the-dark-knight

Over the weekend we saw a fascinating fan theory about Heath Ledger’s Joker in Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight. The theory manages to turn the insane villain into the hero of the story, and it actually works on several levels. The following breakdown originated from Reddit user GeneralZee (via Uproxx), and I’m curious to see what you all think about it:

"Joker, although a lying psychopath, is actually the hero in The Dark Knight. Before the Joker, Gotham was a mess. Entire sections of the city were closed off due to madness, organized crime ran rampant, and the majority of important city officials were wildly corrupt. The city even tolerated a renegade vigilante who ran around wearing a rubber suit (Okay, special armor and carbon fiber, but they don’t know that).
"Along comes the Joker and by the end of a very short time, almost all organized crime was eliminated, many corrupt officials were imprisoned or dead, and the city’s Vigilante even went into hiding for 8 years. This was all part of Joker’s masterfully executed plan."

There are a lot more details in the theory about why The Joker should be perceived as a hero, and it talks about how Batman is the one who actually became "a true villain, the kind that abandons his own principles.” He explains how the Joker manipulated Batman into killing Dent, and how it was all part of the Joker’s plan to rid Gotham city of the vigilante and its corrupt villains. After all, he robbed a bank run by the mob, jacked up the finances of the mobsters, and even helped oust the Gotham City Police Department's crooked cops.

The theory also claims that The Joker actually "believed in Gordon” and that he was “one of the few officers on the force who was truly incorruptible." It goes on to say that when Joker clapped at him in that memorable scene, the theory suggests it wasn’t done in a mocking manner. Joker was actually applauding Gordon for being one of the honest cops who was trying to keep the city together.

It’s an intriguing theory that I actually really love. I don't know if that's what Nolan was trying to do, but regardless, what do you think about it? Was the Joker's real plan to make Gotham City a better place?

I'd love to know what Nolan thinks about this theory.

Trailer for YOUTH Starring Michael Caine, Harvey Kietel, and Rachel Weisz

I know the upcoming film Youth isn’t really geeky-looking, but it looks like a great film. I’m a film geek, so I like all kinds of movies, even ones that don’t include superheroes, monsters, action, or spaceships. Youth has an incredible cast of actors that includes Michael Caine, Harvey Keitel, Rachel Wiesz, and Paul Dano

The film was directed by Paolo Sorrentino, the director of Italy’s foreign language Oscar winner The Great Beauty, and this is the synopsis:

Two longtime friends vacationing in the Swiss Alps. Oscar winning actor Michael Caine plays Fred, an acclaimed composer and conductor, who brings along his daughter (Rachel Weisz) and best friend Mick (Harvey Keitel), a renowned filmmaker. While Mick scrambles to finish the screenplay for what he imagines will be his last important film, Fred has no intention of resuming his musical career. The two men reflect on their past, each finding that some of the most important experiences can come later in life.

The movie will be released on December 4th.

Action-Packed STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS LEGO Commercial and BB-8 Info

The first commercial has been released for a Star Wars: The Force Awakens LEGO playset, and it’s really quite exciting! The ad sheds some interesting light on the new droid BB-8 as The First Order is chasing him down, and Poe Dameron (Oscar Isaac) is trying to save him. The commercial also gives us the finalized sounds that BB-8 will be making in the film. Up to this point, everything that we’ve heard from the droid has been temporary. You can watch the trailer below, but be warned: below that I will be getting into some SPOILER information regarding BB-8. (Editor's note: Seriously, the spoilers below are way more than I wanted to know about the movie.)

It has been assumed by most that BB-8 is the property of Rey (Daisy Ridley), but the droid actually belongs to the Resistance pilot Dameron. This was confirmed through the toys that will be released for the movie, the catalog of which you can check out here.

There’s more to the story, though. From what I’ve heard, Dameron is the one who finds Luke Skywalker and Anakin Skywalker’s original lightsaber on the planet of Jakku, and he hides it in BB-8. That is why you see The First Order chasing after him in the commercial.

We’ve seen a lot of marketing material with BB-8 and Rey together, which is what made people believe that the droid belonged to her. It looks to me like after BB-8 escapes The First Order, it eventually gets picked up by Rey, which you can see in the photo below. That's how she comes into possession of the Lightsaber, which is eventually passed on to Finn (John Boyega) who faces down Kylo Ren with it in the woods.

14-character-photos-for-gotham-season-2

Just the other day we posted a brief promo spot for Gotham, which took us a little bit further into Bruce Wayne's future Batcave. Today we have a series of promo photos featuring all the main characters that will see in the upcoming second season.

Everyone knows the name Commissioner Gordon. He is one of the crime world’s greatest foes, a man whose reputation is synonymous with law and order. But what is known of Gordon’s story and his rise from rookie detective to Police Commissioner? What did it take to navigate the multiple layers of corruption that secretly ruled Gotham City, the spawning ground of the world’s most iconic villains? And what circumstances created them – the larger-than-life personas who would become Catwoman, The Penguin, The Riddler, Two-Face and The Joker?
Gotham is an origin story of the great DC Comics super villains and vigilantes, revealing an entirely new chapter that has never been told. From executive producer/writer Bruno Heller (The Mentalist, Rome), Gotham follows one cop’s rise through a dangerously corrupt city teetering on the edge of evil and chronicles the birth of one of the most popular super heroes of our time.

The series stars Ben McKenzie, Donal Logue, Sean Pertwee, Robin Lord Taylor, Erin Richards, David Mazouz, Camren Bicondova, Zabryna Guevara, Cory Michael Smith, Victoria Cartagena, Andrew Stewart Jones, and John Doman. Some of the newcomers include James Frain and Jessica Lucas as Theo and Tabitha Galavan, and Michael Chiklis as Captain Nathaniel Barnes.

Gotham Season 2 is set to premiere on September 21st.

Disney Animation Style X-Men Portrait Art

So, as we've seen with Big Hero Six, mixing an animated Disney movie with a Marvel property is a genius move. Well, Randy Bishop has gone the extra mile by drawing several X-Men character portraits in a Disney Animation style. We've shown his art before when he drew Captain America and Bucky as Disney characters.

I personally think the art is amazing, as Randy manages to really show great personality in each of the X-men and makes them all look different from one another without just relying on their different costumes. One issue I have with modern-day heroes is they all look similar but in different costumes, but Mr. Bishop's art manages to truly capture unique characters that all have unique looks.

My personal favorites are Gambit and Kitty Pryde. He hits a lot of them. Check out several of them below, and see more of his art on his Facebook page.
