Mark Hamill Talks KINGSMAN: THE SECRET SERVICE and STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS

Actor Mark Hamill — who, for those of you who may not know, has had a hell of a career outside the Star Wars films — appears in the upcoming film Kingsman: The Secret Service, and he spoke before a special early screening of the film in Los Angeles last night. SuperheroHype was on the scene, so you can read all of Hamill's quotes there, but I've pulled a few of his most interesting bits of conversation so you can get the gist of what was said below.

On writer Mark Millar asking permission to use his likeness in the Kingsman comic:

“I was a fan of his writing. I heard he wanted to talk to me about something, so I called him. He told me about the comic he was writing… Part of the plot involved kidnapping iconic science fiction actors, believe it or not. He said, ‘It’s sort of a mash-up.’ The comic is a throwback to the old hyper-stylized super-spy movies, like when Sean Connery was James Bond, contrasted with the sort of dystopian existence that he came from. It goes back and forth between the glamorized, idealized fantasy spy world back to this poor family living in a council house and so forth.”

(Spoilers for the comic below.)

The plot has been altered slightly from the comic, so it remains to be seen whether or not Hamill dies on screen in the same fashion as he does on the page. In the comic, he's rescued from a plane by a British Secret Service agent but their parachute opens too late and kills them both, which Hamill says "appealed to my perverse sense of humor."

“At one point [Mark Millar] said, ‘If we make this into a movie, will you play yourself?’ I thought, ‘Yeah, that sounds fine.’ What happened was, when they wrote the screenplay, that element of kidnapped sci-fi actors went away, but Mark still wanted me to do it. He said, ‘There’s another part we want you to play.’”

Kingsman: The Secret Service opens on February 13th in the U.S., but that wasn't the only thing Hamill talked about last night. He also mentioned a bit about what happened on a set in a galaxy far, far away:

“The most interesting aspect from my point of view is that [Star Wars] is now in the hands of the generation who were fans…It’s the next generation of filmmakers who were sort of weened on these pictures.
“You know, the security on it is just crazy. I’m surprised I can even admit I’m in it! …I like being surprised. It’s a whole different era now. When we made the original films, you had the odd reporter hanging around the studio bribing people to give them stories. Now, I said to them, ‘Do I really have to wear this robe and this hood that covers my entire head to go from the trailer to the soundstage?’ They said, ‘Yeah, there’s drones.’ Seriously! There’s drones flying over the studio trying to get pictures of whatever they can get pictures of.”

We've already seen the results of many of those drones captured when flying over the sets, but now it's up to J.J. Abrams and his editors and visual effects teams to bring this baby home. Star Wars: The Force Awakens opens in theaters on December 18th.

HALF-LIFE 2 In Real Life - Fan Film

Those of you who are fans of the video game Half-Life 2 are going to enjoy this fan-made short film created by Nick Bertke. He basically brings the world of Half-Life 2 into our own world with the use of some mad digital mashup skills. He used his actual neighborhood as the setting and then added elements from the Half-Life 2 universe to it. The result is pretty radical, and it’s fun seeing these things interact with the real world.

3 New Clips from JUPITER ASCENDING Reveal More of The Wachowskis' Wild Vision

I wrote a little about The Wachowskis in a piece yesterday spotlighting a 100 minute interview they did. Today I have another opportunity to write about them, thanks to the release of three new clips from their upcoming sci-fi film Jupiter Ascending. I'm always happy to shine a light on them because I feel like the writer/director duo is often overlooked when conversations arise about America's most interesting filmmakers. They take their craft very seriously (as evidenced in that interview), and they seem to be willing to take artistic chances that other filmmakers simply wouldn't take.

I really hope Jupiter Ascending turns out to be great, but the studio bumping it from a summer release to a February 6th opening doesn't necessarily bode well. I'll remain optimistic, though, because even if it's terrible, I'm still happy that the Wachowskis are creating massive, original sci-fi universes of their own design. Here's hoping this one turns out to be worth visiting. Check out the three clips below.

12 Fun Facts about BILL & TED'S EXCELLENT ADVENTURE

12-fun-facts-about-bill-teds-excellent-adventure

While we wait to see if we actually get another Bill & Ted sequel, I thought I’d put together of list of Fun Facts for the movie that started it all: Bill & Ted’s Excelent Adventure. This was such a ridiculous yet extremely enjoyable movie. It starred Alex Winter and George Carlin and launched the career of Keanu Reeves. I really hope that we get to see Bill & Ted 3. It would be so fun to revisit these characters after all these years. I tried to show the movie to my kids a few months ago, and they just didn't bite. I guess you just had to be growing up in the 1980s to fully appreciate its excellence.

  • The phone booth time machine that was used in the film was given away as a contest prize in Nintendo Power magazine. It was promoting a Bill & Ted video game for the NES, which sucked.
  • When Napoleon finishes his "waterslide" presentation near the end of the flick, Ted says, "I don't think it's gonna work." The maps show that Napoleon is actually diagramming the French invasion of Russia, Napoleon's most disastrous defeat.
  • Bill & Ted started as a stand-up act in which the characters would discuss current events without knowing what they were talking about.
  • The original time machine from the script was a 1969 Chevy Van, but the filmmakers didn’t want people to thing they were ripping off Back to the Future. They changed it to a phone booth and apparently weren’t concerned about Doctor Who. When the van was in the script, Bill and Ted picked up even more historical figures than they did in the final film.
  • Musician Stevie Salas provides the fingering for Rufus during the jam session at the end of the movie.
  • The film completed shooting in 1987, but the release was delayed because the film's original financiers, De Laurentiis Entertainment Group, went bankrupt. The movie was almost dumped onto cable television. Luckily, Nelson Entertainment bought the rights to the movie in 1988, and it was released in 1989.
  • While doing his report at the end of the movive, Bill mentions that he has an Oedipus Complex. This term was coined by Sigmund Freud to describe a child's desire to possess the parent of the opposite sex. This is a reference to Bill's confused sexual feeling over his new stepmom, Missy.
  • The original ending was pretty lame, as it had Bill and Ted delivering their history report in class with all of the historical figures displaying their views via blackboard.
  • You can see an electric football game in the background during the scene where Bill and Ted leave Napoleon in Ted's younger brother's care. This might help explain why Bill and Ted are good at it and beat the reaper when they play in the sequel.
  • Originally, Winter auditioned for the role of Ted and Reeves auditioned for the role of Bill. I don’t think it really mattered who got which part.
  • In the original outline for the movie, Rufus was a 28-year-old high school sophomore who befriended Bill and Ted. There was also a character named John the Serf, whom Bill and Ted picked up in medieval England.
  • The movie is rated PG, and they tried to keep the language clean throughout the film. But there is one quick F-bomb that can easily be missed. At the end of the scene where Ted is enticing Genghis Khan into the phone booth with the Twinkie, right after Genghis walks off screen, you hear him yell, "You motherfucker!" The last word is a bit muffled, though. One of the other curse words is heard when Ted asks Bill if they know where they're going, and after responding he doesn't know, Bill yells, "Shit!" while Ted just shouts.

Here's the original trailer:

Zachary Levi Will Star in HEROES REBORN Miniseries for NBC

$

NBC announced a sequel miniseries to Heroes called Heroes Reborn almost a year ago, but the reaction from fans was pretty mixed. Most people agree that the first season of Heroes was pretty solid, but then the quality of the storytelling began to dramatically decline. Some blame this on the writers' strike and some blame this on bad writing in general, but Heroes never really regained its footing after that first season. Heroes Reborn was supposed to have a digital series rolled out in 2014 that introduced the new characters we'd be seeing in the upcoming show, but when that never happened, I assumed the network had scrapped plans for this miniseries altogether. But that's apparently not the case.

TVLine reports that Chuck star Zachary Levi will lead the cast of the new show, and although he's said to be playing a "key" role, specific details about his character remain secret for now. Here's what Levi had to say:

“There are a few franchises I’ve always wanted to be a part of, and Heroes is one of them. Chuck gave me the opportunity to wield some fun powers, but an entire world with superpowers is a world I’ve always wanted to explore.
“I’m so grateful for the opportunity to work with Tim [Kring], and the awesome team around him, in bringing this to life. Moreover, to be working with NBC again is such a reward in itself, as my bonds and relationships there are deep.”

Levi is likable and he seems like a good guy, but I must admit I'm sort of bummed that he's returning to TV for this. I don't have a lot of faith that Tim Kring will be able to pull off the concept of resurrecting this show, largely because the TV landscape has changed so much since Heroes first debuted in 2006. We're practically in another era of television right now, and the idea of dropping an old show back into the cultural zeitgeist didn't exactly pan out for Arrested Development, and that was far more beloved than Heroes.

The only other cast member who's been confirmed for Heroes Reborn is Jack Coleman, who will reprise his role of Noah Bennett. The show is slated to premiere sometime in 2015. Here's the synopsis that was released last year; we'll see if that digital series ever materializes:

The saga behind the 2006 breakout series Heroes will continue as creator Tim Kring returns to the fold and develops new layers to his original superhero concept. This highly anticipated 13-episode miniseries will reconnect with the basic elements of the show's first season where ordinary people were waking up to the fact that they had extraordinary abilities. This series will be preceded by a new digital series that will introduce audiences to the new characters and storylines that will take the Heroes phenomenon to new places.

Art Spotlight - The Stylish and Beautiful Art of Jeff Langevin

Apart from creating one of the prettiest Huntress pieces I've seen in a while, freelance artist Jeff Langevin has also expressed his love of video games through his beautifully striking art. You can get a glimpse at his various types of work in the gallery below, but do make sure to check out his website, as there is much more to see. His work bounces from the art nouveau style of Princess Peach and Wicked Witch, to the Retro Information toned TMNT and LOTR posters, and then all the way to stunning portraits of Wonder Woman and The Birds of Prey (among my favorites). All of these styles, while vastly different, still contain the same impressive line and color work he is known for. Like I said, do yourself a favor and head to his Etsy page to buy prints or his website to see more. You won't regret it.

Robert Kirkman Gives New Update on THE WALKING DEAD Spin-Off, Calls It "Startlingly Different"

Love it or hate it, The Walking Dead is one of the most popular shows in television history. So it was pretty big news when comic book creator and executive producer Robert Kirkman announced he was teaming with AMC to bring us a spin-off show set in the same universe. We don't know too much about the new show thus far, other than that it will take place in Los Angeles instead of Atlanta, but Entertainment Weekly caught up with Kirkman and got him to spill some more details about the show.

“I will say that this is going to be a show about family. But it’s going to be a show about a different type of family that we haven’t explored in The Walking Dead thus far. So what we’re trying to do with The Walking Dead spinoff is keep the story as familiar as possible for people that love The Walking Dead, so you’ll get the kind of things that you expect from a Walking Dead story. But, at the same time, we’ll want to tell these stories in a completely different way with completely different people in a completely different setting that’s going to make for a fundamentally different show. I think the look and feel of The Walking Dead spinoff is going to be startlingly different.”

Kirkman and his team want to make sure that viewers don't have to have any prior knowledge of The Walking Dead to enjoy this show, and no characters from the original show will appear in the spin-off (at least for now).

“We want it to be a new show that can stand on its own. You could watch The Walking Dead spinoff if you’ve never watched an episode of The Walking Dead and get a really great, rich, fulfilling experience out of it. It has to be a show that can stand on its own. I think that’s what we’ve accomplished, and we start filming in a couple of days. I’m really excited.”
"It’s Los Angeles. It’s a corner of the world that we have never explored in the comic book series. So, theoretically, something like this could be happening in Los Angeles in the comic book series, but we don’t show you this area of the country in the comic book series. So it fits within that world, but it is all new characters, all new events and all kinds of crazy stuff.”

It sounds like this might be a show that people could tune into if The Walking Dead just isn't their cup of tea. I watched the first season of the show and had to tune out because I thought it was far too slow: not enough was happening, and none of the characters were interesting enough for me to really care about. (In fact, most of them were incredibly annoying.) But I've heard the show got much better after that, and its increasing popularity seems to endorse that claim.

What do you guys think? Are you excited about the spin-off? Let us know below.

Full Size Gundam Attacks Japanese Office in Elaborate Prank Video

io9 pointed us to this crazy video of a Japanese office getting pranked by having a projection of a full size Gundam popping up outside their window, complete with blasting smoke and rumbling earthquake effects. This is insanely elaborate, but I'm not sure I buy that it's real. The office workers look a little too much like they're in on the joke, and how could the people playing this prank have gotten the office itself to shake like that? Maybe they preset those effects in an empty building and allowed a company to rent it out afterwards.

What do you guys think? Fake or real?

THE LEGO MOVIE Directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller Respond to Oscar Snub

GeekTyrant editor Ben Pearson published a "top movies of 2014" lists that had The LEGO Movie on it, and my unpublished list also included it. There are so many ways in which the movie should not have been good, yet despite all that it had a story that was original with true depth. Critics, directors, and fans of the movie were in shock at the complete snub it received from the Academy/Oscars in the category of "best animated feature." While the song "Everything is Awesome" did get a nomination, let's be honest: it's a throwaway category that always struggles to have enough good nominees.

The directors of The LEGO Movie, Phil Lord and Chris Miller, took to Twitter to graciously vent.

Lord and Miller spoke to Esquire about the snub:

"We're really in the black on this movie. We made it in order to inspire families and kids and people. And we've been justly rewarded for that and we feel really lucky. The award stuff is its own thing and of course we're disappointed, but it's not the reason we made the movie. There's no way to not be pleased with the outcome of this film."
Miller added, "Seeing the outpouring of the fans today was really something special."

James Gunn (Guardians of the Galaxy) weighed in on the Oscars nominations yesterday, saying that The LEGO Movie snub was "just fucking ridiculous."

Gunn blamed the age of Academy voters:

"I think that Academy voters did not watch the movie. I really think that's the only possible way [it didn't get nominated]. Listen, when I heard there was a Lego movie I thought, 'That's a silly kids idea. I'm not going to see that movie.' And then people started telling me how good it was and I went to see it. The average Academy member is 63 years old. They get all these screeners and they don't know what The Lego Movie is so they don't watch it. But The Lego Movie is one of the very finest films of the year. It's a great movie that works on all levels and it should have been nominated for Best Animated Feature."

Hear hear! I really think the Academy is showing that it's out of touch with this and the snub on Selma director Ava DuVernay. The Oscars is losing the respect of a lot of people and it's a trajectory that been happening for a long time. I wonder if an influx of younger and more racially diverse Academy voters could turn things around.

Finally, the team at JoBlo created an edit of the characters in The LEGO Movie reacting to the Oscar snub. It encapsulates very well how a lot of people feel about it.

Sony Pictures Teases SINISTER SIX Film

It's been a mess over at Sony Pictures for the last few months, and know one knows exactly what the hell they plan on doing with their Spider-Man franchise. The future of the superhero is up in the air, but it looks like they still plan on moving forward with that Sinister Six spin-off film, which is being developed by Drew Goddard (The Cabin in the Woods). The studio recently posted this image teasing Sinister Six on their official International Facebook page:

sony-pictures-teases-sinister-six-film

The English translation of the text in the image (thanks to ComicBook.com) is, "We have plans for you … #Spider-Man." I'm not sure why they would post this if they weren't still planning on making the movie. Last year, Sony gave Sinister Six a release date of November 11th, 2016. I wonder if they still plan on trying to get the movie done by then.

I'm a fan of Goddard's work, and I'd like to think that he could pull off an awesome Sinister Six film. It really could be good if the studio executives don't try to screw it up with their terrible ideas of what they think a good super villain movie should be.

The Vulture and Doctor Octopus are the only two characters represented in the image, and as you know they were also teased at the end of The Amazing Spider-Man 2, which also included Electro, Rhino, and the Goblin. Now, I assume since they "have plans" for Spider-Man, that the web-slinger will also be in the movie. As I've said before, it would be hard to make a movie with a bunch of Spider-Man villains without Spider-Man. It's just not sounding like Andrew Garfield will be involved this time around.

I do have another theory about what this might mean. Maybe this is for the previously announced Amazing Spider-Man 3, and instead of crowding a movie with six villains, they are only going to focus on Vulture and Doc Ock as the main antagonists. That kind of contradicts everything that we've heard surrounding the superhero up until this point, though.

What do you think this teaser image means? I just wish Sony would have some kind of conference clarifying what exactly is going on.

Short Film About a Robotic Beast and a BMX Biker - MILES

short-film-about-a-robotic-beast-and-a-bmx-biker-miles

I've got a cool short film for you to check out called MILES. It was written and directed by animator Oliver Daly. The film explores the relationship between a BMX rider and a robotic-type beast. This is a proof-of-concept short that is being used to help raise fund for a full-length feature film. I see a lot of potential for this being a high-octane style film. You can check out the official website for the robotic beast created for the film here if you want. Here's a detailed summary with some additional information:

MILES is a proof-of-concept short film about blurring the boundaries of humanity and technology, set in the teenage off-roading world of California. To create the short, the filmmakers embedded themselves in authentic dirt bike culture, shooting actual teenage motocross athletes in a documentary style alongside emerging young actors.
MILES is the story of a teenage dirt bike rider who stumbles upon M.A.X., an escaped prototype of the most advanced military creation in history. Miles explores M.A.X.’s abilities and the creature quickly develops into something fiercely loyal, intelligent and nearly unstoppable.
Soon, he discovers that M.A.X. was developed in absolute secrecy as a remotely controllable beast, engineered to replace American soldiers on the front lines, and kill autonomously. As M.A.X. becomes less conspicuous and as their bond grows stronger, Miles is forced to make decisions that will affect not only his life but also the lives of those closest to him.

I hope the director gets to make his full length film. Enjoy the short!

Seth Rogen Tweets Film Inspirations for His PREACHER Adaptation

Seth Rogen has spent the last month or so embroiled in international controversy surrounding his film The Interview, but it seems like he's ready to move past that film and the hype around it and get back to work on his adaptation of Garth Ennis and Steve Dillon's Preacher for AMC. Rogen is working on it with his writing, producing, and directing partner Evan Goldberg, and he took to Twitter to reveal some of the inspirations for the project. Check them out below.

Fans of the Preacher comic series (which is one I highly, highly recommend - it may be the best comic I've ever read) should be pretty pleased by these choices. The combination of classic westerns with brutal action and more contemplative features suggest a show that really captures the best of the comic, and since these guys have been fans of the comic from day one, I'm hoping they're the right guys to bring this adaptation to the small screen. Filming begins soon, and we should hear more about it as the year progresses.

Preacher follows Reverend Jesse Custer, a tough Texas preacher who has lost his faith, has learned that God has left Heaven and abandoned His responsibilities. He finds himself the only person capable of tracking God down, demanding answers, and making Him answer for His dereliction of duty. Accompanying Jesse on his journey is his former girlfriend and a friendly vampire who seems to prefer a pint in the pub to the blood of the innocent. On his tail is one of the most iconic bad guys in print – an immortal, unstoppable killing machine named the Saint of Killers – a western lone gunman archetype whose sole purpose is to hunt and kill Jesse.

FANTASTIC FOUR "Mess" Update and Trailer Coming Soon

fantastic-four-reboot-update-and-trailer-coming-soon

Yesterday we reported on rumors that Fox was not happy with Josh Trank's Fantastic Four reboot, and that it was such "a mess" that they needed to do some heavy reshoots. According to screenwriter and producer Simon Kinberg, that may not be all true. Kinberg reached out to Latino-Review and gave them an update, and he also said that we'll get to see the first teaser trailer with Kingsman: The Secret Service.

To confirm - Fantastic Four will be doing 3-4 days of additional photography with director Josh Trank and some key cast members. We are very excited about the film and can't wait for you to see what we've been up to. And you will be able to do that very soon as I can confirm here that the teaser will be on Kingsman in theaters February 13.

So it looks like we'll get to see for ourselves if the movie is going to be good or not when we watch that teaser trailer. Since I wrote up the "mess" post yesterday, I've had time to think a little bit about FOX not liking the film, and that might actually be a good thing. As we've learned from past films, Fox doesn't have very good judgment when making superhero movies. Maybe the reason they don't like it is because it's something the fans might actually enjoy! Just something to think about.

The GREMLINS Remake "Ran Out Of Steam"...For Now

$

Hollywood has been threatening to remake Gremlins for years, and it came pretty close to happening last year when Warner Bros. hired Dark Shadows writer Seth Grahame-Smith to pen the script. The new movie "was a completely different cast of characters, but acknowledging the events of the first two movies," but luckily it looks like we won't have to worry about that happening any time soon. EW spoke to the writer, and he offered an update on the project:

“I think we just ran out of steam,” Grahame-Smith says. “It’s one of those things where everybody got busy doing other things. It’s something I would love to come back to, but right now Steven [Spielberg]'s making two movies back to back and Chris Columbus is busy. We’re all taking a five-minute break on that.”

So it sounds like the concept is dead...for now. I can't decide if that "five-minute break" comment is a promise or a threat - I guess it depends on if you're actually looking forward to seeing a Gremlins movie in the modern era. I'm guessing you'll see a lot of sites talking about how the Gremlins remake isn't going to happen, but until these guys officially say that they're giving up on the idea altogether, the threat is still out there. This announcement is cause for a minor celebration, but prepare to be disappointed if things rev back up in a year or two.

Tom Hardy Reportedly Left SUICIDE SQUAD Because of the Script

$

tom-hardy-reportedly-left-suicide-squade-because-of-script

Looks like someone might have an ego issue. Yesterday we reported that Tom Hardy had dropped out of David Ayer's Suicide Squad due to scheduling conflicts. Apparently that's not the real reason he left. According to Latino-Review, the real reason why he dropped out was because he didn't like the final script of the film.

So what is it that he may have not liked about the script? Apparently Deadshot and The Joker were given more screen time than some of the other villains in the story like Rick Flagg, which is the character Hardy was supposed to play. In the end, does it really matter as long as the story is good? The filmmakers have to do what is right for the story, and if that means cutting back on certain characters, then so be it.

This movie has an ensemble cast and features a lot of different main characters. Ayer's last film, Fury, was like that, and he did a great job balancing all of those characters. I imagine he'll be able to do the same thing with Suicide Squad. I like Hardy as an actor, but maybe he isn't one of those guys that is willing to sacrifice for the rest of the team to help make a better film.

I should point out, though, that all of the actors who signed on to the project did so without reading a script. The script didn't come until after the fact, so maybe there was a legitimate reason as to why he left, but I hope it's not because his character didn't have enough screen time. That would be a shame.

Jake Gyllenhaal has been the actor rumored to replace Hardy. If he gets the part, he will join Will Smith (Deadshot), Margot Robbie (Harley Quinn), Jared Leto (The Joker), Jai Courtney (Captain Boomerang), and Cara Delevigne (Enchantress).

The movie will be released on August 5th, 2016.

Michael Bay is prepping to move forward with his next film project called 13 Hours, and John Kraskinski is in talks to star in it. The project is based on the true story of the attack on the U.S. Special Mission Compound and a nearby CIA Annex in Benghazi, Libya, on September 11th, 2012.

Krasinski will play a Navy SEAL in the movie, and it will be one of the lead roles in the war thriller. Variety reports that Woody Harrelson, J.K. Simmons, Walton Goggins, and Shea Whigham have also read for certain roles in the film. Apparently Krasinski’s audition blew Bay away. It will be interesting to see him in such a badass role. A movie like this could change his career and take it to the next level.

The script was written by Chuck Hogan (The Strain), and it focuses on six members of a security team that valiantly fought to defend the many Americans stationed on the compound. They only partially succeeded because U.S. Ambassador J. Christopher Stevens was killed along with a foreign service worker in one attack. Then, during a second assault at a CIA station nearby, two contract workers were killed.

I think this will be a great project for Bay. I like it when he’s not making Transformers movies. Krasinski will next be seen in Cameron Crowe’s new film, which still doesn’t have a title. Can you imagine Krasinski as a Navy Seal?
