ZOMBIELAND 2 Is Finally Moving Forward

zombieland-2-is-finally-moving-forward

Would you look at that! Sony Pictures is finally ready to move forward with Zombieland 2, and they've hired Dave Callaham to write the script. He is the writer who worked on screenplays for The Expendables films and also has a story credit on the most recent Godzilla movie. He will work alongside director Ruben Fleischer, who is expected to return to helm the sequel.

Back in 2013 there was an attempt made to adapt the original film into a series on Amazon, but it completely failed and never got past the pilot episode. It's one of those things that just didn't hit with audiences, and it wasn't vey good. I really enjoyed the first movie, and I think there's a lot of potential for a great sequel. Hopefully they can come up with another fun story to tell.

There's no word on whether Jesse Eisenberg, Emma Stone, Woody Harrelson, or Abigail Breslin would reprise their roles, but it's be great if they did. I know all their careers have blown up since Zombieland came out, but they could always make room to come back if they wanted.

Artist James Hance has awesomely combined The Little Shop of Horrors with Guardians of the Galaxy. The piece is called "Somewhere That's Groot," and it features Rick Moranis' Seymour with Vin Diesel's Groot. This might just be one of my favorite Guardians of the Galaxy mashups because I'm also a big fan of Little Shop of Horrors, and the two characters work so well together.

A new full trailer has been released for Ridley Scott's Exodus: Gods and Kings, and it is stunning. This movie looks so damn good. Scott really knows how to bring these historical epics to life on the big screen. There's a ton of new footage in this trailer, some of which feature the plagues that Moses unleashes on Egypt with the help of God.

The film tells "the story of one man's daring courage to take on the might of an empire. Using state of the art visual effects and 3D immersion, Scott brings new life to the story of the defiant leader Moses (Christian Bale) as he rises up against the Egyptian Pharaoh Ramses (Joel Edgerton), setting 400,000 slaves on a monumental journey of escape from Egypt and its terrifying cycle of deadly plagues."

The movie is set to be released on December 12th. Now enjoy the nearly 3-minute long trailer.

Thrilling NIGHTWING Web Series Episode 1 - "Deathstroke"

thrilling-nightwing-web-series-episode-1-deathstroke

A couple of years ago a fan-made short film called "Batman: Nightwing Vs. Red Hood" was created and released by Jeremy Le and Danny Shepard. It was a pretty big success for them, so they turned to Kickstarter to fund a bigger Nightwing project. They surpassed their funding goal and created a five part mini-series. The first episode of that series has been released online, and it has some cool action sequences. It's a fun first episode, but the storytelling is a little weak. Hopefully it will get better as it goes on, but I think it's still worth checking out. Here's the synopsis:

"Nightwing: The Series" follows the story of Batman's former sidekick, Dick Grayson aka Robin. After a falling out with his mentor, Dick abandons Gotham and everyone in it. Emerging in the City of Bludhaven years later, Dick takes on the guise of "Nightwing” easily defeating the petty criminals who infest it. But he soon realizes he may have bitten off more than he can chew when a mysterious and dangerous assassin only known as ‘Deathstroke, begins targeting Bludhaven citizens. Can he defend his new home and the lives of it's inhabitants from the most dangerous foe he’s ever faced!? Only time will tell in this epic 5 part mini-series!

I also included a little background information on how this project came together from the Kickstarter page:

“After watching the original we promised we wouldn’t make a sequel, unless we could make it look like a huge Hollywood production. And we got our chance.

"A local studio here in Las Vegas, MG Studio has offered to help produce a web series with us focusing on Nightwing and a few other DC Universe characters!

"MG Studio has already provided us with a ton of resources to make this new Fan series happen! The only problem is it’s not enough to bring this new vision for a very cinematic and theatrical film to life.

"We will primarily be spending the funds on high quality costumes and props as well as being able to gain locations that are otherwise unattainable.”

Check out the first episode, and let us know if you're looking forward to seeing the future episodes.

David Fincher to Direct Full Season of HBO's UTOPIA

David Fincher has taken on a huge series commitment at HBO, and he's set to direct every episode of HBO's adaptation of the British show Utopia. It looks like his 2015 is going to be completely booked. As a huge fan of the director, I think it's pretty awesome that he's attached himself to a project like this.

The original UK series is a crime thriller drama that follows "a small group of people who find themselves in possession of the manuscript sequel of a cult graphic novel called The Utopia Experiments which is rumoured to have predicted the worst disasters of the last century. This leads them to be targeted by an organization known as The Network, which they must avoid to survive. Using the manuscript, they must uncover the meaning hidden in its pages before the disasters depicted become reality."

Fincher talked to The Guardian about the project and why he was willing to spend his whole year bringing it to life.

"I like the world of it. I like the characters – I love Dennis's [Kelly, creator of the UK show] honesty and affinity for the nerds. I mean, I've always been a bit of a junior conspiracy theorist cos I don't have time to connect them all! But it's nice to see that somebody has." He is planning to direct the whole series, which will keep him busy for most of 2015, and is not looking much beyond that. There is no long-term plan (at least not that he's confessing to). "Oddly enough," he says, "I did a remake of a literary adaptation, then I did a remake of a television show. Now I'm doing a literary adaptation [and then remaking another show]. I don't know: the pattern is not clear to me exactly what it is that I'm doing. But I'm sure it'll be illuminated for me. Your job is context. I'm just a hamster on a wheel!"

This seems like it will be a perfect project for Fincher, and I have no doubt that he's going to deliver an insanely great series.

The Bottleneck Gallery is about to open a new show called Turtles in Time, which celebrates 30 years of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. It is co-presented by Nickelodeon and Chogrin, who curated the show (All the cool galleries are having Chogrin curate their shows these days). Chogrin always brings a lot of international artists, and it's fun to see what pop culture touchstones mean to artists from other countries. We have a few pieces to share with you today, but with over 75 artists participating, there was no way to include them all. If you want to see more, you can head over to the event’s tumblr, or if you’re in New York, you can see the show in person when it opens this Friday, September 3. The poster for the show, above, is by artist Glen Brogan, who just finished his own show at the gallery.

Russell Crowe is making a very ambitious directorial debut with The Water Diviner. The scale and time period would seem like a lot for a first time director, that is until you think about all the talented directors Crowe has worked with and learned from.

Official Synopsis:
Starring Russell Crowe (GLADIATOR, A BEAUTIFUL MIND) and Olga Kurylenko (OBLIVION, QUANTUM OF SOLACE), THE WATER DIVINER is an epic adventure set four years after the devastating battle of Gallipoli in Turkey during World War I. Australian farmer Connor (Crowe) travels to Istanbul to discover the fate of his sons, reported missing in the action, where he forges a relationship with the beautiful Turkish woman (Kurylenko) who owns the hotel in which he stays. Holding on to hope, and with the help of a Turkish Officer, Connor embarks on a journey across the country to find the truth about the fate of his sons. THE WATER DIVINER is an extraordinary tale of love, hope and heroism.

The Water Diviner does not have a US release date yet, but it opens in Australia and New Zealand, December 26th.

Warner Bros. Animation has released the first full trailer for their upcoming animated film Justice League: Throne of Atlantis, and I think fans will like what it has to offer. Aquaman finally gets the spotlight in one of these films, and it looks like he kicks some ass.

As Orm and Black Manta make their move against the surface world after the battle with Apokolips forces in Justice League War had deadly consequences for Atlantis, the queen of the lost underwater civilization searches for her other son, Orm's half brother Arthur. Living on the surface world with powers he doesn't understand, Arthur Curry steps into his destiny as Aquaman, teaming with the Justice League to save and unite all people of the world.

The cast of the movie includes Matt Lanter (Aquaman), Sam Witwer (Orm/Ocean Master), Chris Gorham (The Flash), Jason O'Mara (Batman), Shemar Moore (Cyborg), Rosario Dawson (Wonder Woman), Jerry O'Connell (Superman), Nathan Fillion (Green Lantern), and Sean Astin (Shazam).

Thanks to Newsarama for the trailer.

STAR WARS: EPISODE VII - Possible First Footage Images and Cantina Scene Details

star-wars-episode-vii-cantina-scene-details-and-more

The Star Wars: Episode VII rumors continue to roll in, and we have a couple of interesting ones for you to read today. These are just rumors for now, but as with everything that has leaked, it is possible that some of it is true, so I will throw out a SPOILER warning just in case. Included in this batch of rumors are some screenshots of some possible leaked footage from the movie.

I'm enjoy reading this stuff. It gets me excited about the movie, and I enjoy discussing these things with my friends. I know rumors like this aren't for everybody, but there are a lot of fanboys and fangirls out there like me, which is why I post them.

The first rumor comes from Star Wars 7 News, and it offers up possible details on a cantina scene early on in the movie in which Daisy Ridley’s character meets Chewbacca and Han Solo:

Cantina Scene.

Daisy arrives to Cantina in search of Han or Luke I believe. She is confronted by an alien, she lifts her blaster to him, he then takes it from her hand “Don’t point a blaster at someone if you are not going to use it” and points it at her. At this point Chewie (With arm Bandaged/In a Sling) intimidates the alien, “What good is a one armed wookie” Chewie then rips the guys arm off and hands the blaster back to Daisy. Ford was not present at filming this, BUT……….

Cut to the outside of the Cantina as a Planet/Moon is blown up outside, Han is present here (Wearing a thin cut, waist length leather jacket, boots etc, a “Matching outfit”) oh and he still has his blaster :) I don’t know if he has just arrived to meet up with Daisy and Chewie, but he is cutting through the crowd of onlookers as everyone is witnessing the destruction of “Whatever” was blown up in the sky.

Note, not 100% sure if Boyega was in the scene but he was present, wearing “Rags” or “Untidy” Clothes. [sic]

The scene definitely sounds it could be a legit description, but until the movie comes out, we won't know for sure. The next rumor comes from JediNews, and it basically clarifies some previous rumors that we heard regarding Luke Skywalker being missing for 10 years and Han and Chewbacca finding him with the character played by Ridley and John Boyega. This statement gives us a different take why these characters are looking for Luke.

The concept of “Luke is missing/needs to be found” in Episode VII is being approached somewhat from the wrong angle in other rumor reports. The source says the “find Luke” premise is based off the cast of young characters (Ridley, Boyega, others?) trying to deal with a problem they uncover that they feel they can overcome themselves, presumably something relating to the machinations of the Sith and/or Empire. They feel confident in their abilities to attack this challenge head-on and quickly realize they are severely out-matched and way out of their league. So they alter their plans and scramble to enlist the aid of Luke, who is unaware of the situation (and how rapidly it escalates to a problem that requires his immediate attention) at the time of his “searching” by the young cast.

Now here are the screenshots from a video that leaked yesterday that I came across on a site called Technobuffalo. The YouTube account that posted the video has since been terminated. Looks like they could have come from a teaser trailer, but they could be fake or they could be real. I have no idea, so you decide.

We've still got a long way to go before we find out which of these rumors are true and which are false. Star Wars: Episode VII is set to be released on December 18th, 2015. In the meantime, I'll keep you updated on any other rumors or other news that pops up!

The Best Ways to Obtain Superpowers — And Their Possible Side Effects

Let’s face it, we all wish we were superheroes. From time immemorial, we’ve told each other stories about demigods and superstrong heroes and people with a power beyond mere humanity. And we’ve tied on capes or tunics or fake long hair and pretended to be Hercules or Samson or Gilgamesh. Or Batman or Superman or Spiderman.

Unfortunately, these world-saving super heroics require superpowers, and those are hard to come by. There are, however, a few known ways to acquire them — aliens, radiation, genetic experimentation. But before you rush out to your nearest source of gamma radiation, read our analysis of the pros and cons of each method. GeekTyrant and Green Label present

Has Ethan Hawke Been Cast as DOCTOR STRANGE?

has-ethan-hawk-been-cast-as-doctor-strange

The last we heard, Joaquin Phoenix was in final talks to be cast in the role of Doctor Strange in Marvel's upcoming film production. It looks like things may have changed if a new report from a site called This is Infamous is true. They claim that Ethan Hawke had actually been offered the part and that the actor also accepted the job. Here's what they say:

"Ethan Hawke is their new guy, having offered him the role on Friday. I hear Hawke accepted the job over the weekend, and things have quickly progressed into contract talks, with a six-picture deal being what Marvel is hoping to lock him into."
WhimsicalRococohawke

I have no idea if this is true or not, but it is definitely plausible. After all, Hawke worked with director Scott Derrickson on the horror movie Sinister. It would make sense that the two would want to work together again, and why can't it be on a film like Doctor Strange? I really hope that this true, because Hawke is an amazing actor who I think would fit perfectly in the role.

Until we receive some kind of confirmation, we'll treat this as a big fat rumor. But what do you think about the possibility of Hawke in the role of Strange?

Doctor Strange is scheduled to start shooting next year and will be released in the summer of 2016.

An Interview With Alex de Campi about VALENTINE, Digital Comics, and What's Next

valentine_eng_01_01_001-1100x733.jpg

I recently got to chat with the writer of Valentine, a comic that you can currently catch up on at Thrillbent.com. The book stars a young man named Valentine, who, all upon happenstance, ends up realizing the world around him is just the tip of the iceberg. I was able to sit down with writer Alex De Campi to talk a bit about the recently released volume 2, as well as the beginnings of the book itself.

Matt: I guess the first thing would be, what interested you in that time frame with Napoleon? Was it just because you wanted to try something different?

Alex: Well, there is a reason that it is in the Napoleonic era that doesn’t become clear until much later, because it allows me to do a really cool twist at some point. So there are reasons, but I love history, history is awesome. I especially love military history, and that hasn’t been seen that much in my work, but especially in the future a lot of my stuff is set in various historical time periods. Valentine is set in Russia during one of the great military disasters of all time, where I think 90% of the army died, mostly through cold and sickness rather than actually by a Russian. Visually, it's incredibly evocative, regarding the image and setting. The white of the snow, the red of the blood, the blue of the frozen bodies, etc. I mean its all very visual, and that works well so you can immediately have your characters in peril, and very clear peril, without having to spend a lot of time explaining what's going on.

Matt: I actually read them out of order. I read the second book first, so it went from this really bright and vibrant world to this dark and grisly one that was supposed to act as your introduction to the world. It made more sense that way, because there was death all over the place, and by the time you get to the lighter and brighter world you appreciate it more. Christine Larsen's art is beautiful by the way, whether dark or light, it always remains pretty.

Alex: Yeah, we do a lot with color as you can tell. Color is very important to us, and we use it in the saturation and the shades, as each section is color coded. it’s a bit like John Boorman from the film Point Blank in that respect, but we play with saturation a lot more than he does. He was always much more desaturated throughout the whole thing.

Matt: Well now that you are bit further on in chapter 2, do you like having a bit more freedom because of the location and there being more fantastical elements you can introduce?

Alex: The funny thing is that so far, I am working on chapter 13, which is somewhere else entirely. With volume two I’m thrilled that it's essentially chapters 6 through 10, part of the old Valentine. I’m not sure how familiar you are with the history of Valentine, the original incarnation. What you are reading as a fresh volume two was in 2010, and then once we get all caught up we are releasing the new episodes which are even prettier and even crazier!

At this point Alex’s dog was making sure we did not forget about him. We break for a puppy interlude.

Yeah, I'm the cutest thing ever.

Yeah, I'm the cutest thing ever.

LOOK AT THAT FACE!

Alright, back to the show.

Alex: Valentine is a really wonderful comic to do as a digital comic, and it was deliberately created that way. It has alot of twists and turns that take it in many different places. I mean I’m always amused and can tell when someone hasn’t done very much research because they’re like “you know, this is really interesting historical fantasy” and I’m like...no. Congratulations, you’ve read the first chapter (laughter). The constant twist and turns keep it really fresh for me and hopefully for the reader. Its one of the reasons we picked the particular story we did, as it works so well with many episodes, and at the end of each you always want to figure out more, and it never stops, and as you can tell from the first volume, things just constantly happen.

Matt: Yeah

Alex: and the things we do to poor Valentine, I mean, that poor boy.

Matt: Hahaha, and I have to be honest, I am very new to Valentine. In fact, this was my first exposure, so one of the things that grabbed me was the presentation and layout of the book on the website, which has a very motion comic feel to it. That little bit of extra motion it provides helps keep the story moving and strongly feeds into that “just one more page” mentality. Now does Valentine also have a hardcover or trade companion?

Alex: One of the unusual things about Valentine is that we originally launched it on Comixology back in the day. We were one of the only digital longform comics, and we completely threw away the concept of the page. Most of the digital comics that you see are some kind of unhappy medium between a completely digital product but still being able to print the thing at some point. It is really secretly like the screen is half the page, so its a paper comic with just a few little tweaks so you can call it digital, and we were like “no, fuck that.” We saw no print as an endgame, and we didn’t care if it got printed.

I did eventually, like in 2011, go back and publish the last 10 chapters as a graphic novel through Image, and it was literally taking all of these panels and cutting them up and remaking them into a page, and you know, it was visually very successful, and one of the reasons we did it was that people would not review digital comics. Reviewers really looked down on digital comics. I couldn’t even get people to log into Comixology at that point, they just didn’t know what to do. I was like you go to Comixology, press download and then read it on your phone and they were like …..uhhhh I don’t know how to do that. Then I went, okay, fine, and then we made it into a book to raise the profile a little bit, but we probably won’t do a volume 2 like that.

Matt: its amazing how far we have come in a few years time in regards to digital.

Alex: Yeah

Matt: Like I know people now that digital is all they read, and they don’t even go into their comic store anymore.

Alex: Exactly. I am not surprised. I am definitely not surprised. It's the way that most things are going to go. It's a shame that we can’t really have some sort of like, that more companies aren’t more embracing and won’t try more interesting things, because it still feels all very much like it's just something they do. It is still really a print comic.

Matt:  Just a few months ago, I ended up getting Marvel Unlimited, which is the monthly fee Marvel Digital Comic service. While it's cool to be able to read them all on your phone, the books are not laid out in a conducive way for a mobile device. Now I have a giant phone, I have a Note 2, so its not like I’m lacking for Real Estate.

Alex: Yeah

Matt: Its still not, like it doesn't flow from scene to scene, and it is especially awkward on things like 2 page spreads, and it can also be easy to read things out of order because the format wasn't tweaked enough to excel on mobile device. Its treated like an afterthought.

Alex: Yeah, and Valentine is made for a small phone, essentially on a standard, like you could read on a 3GS and you'd be fine. It was designed specifically for that.

Matt: Also the way the chapters are divided, with each one being about 13 or 14 pages long. It makes for great break-time reading.

Alex: That was entirely what the comic was made for, and this is how we competed back in 2009 when no one was doing this sort of thing. If you had a few minutes, you could just pull out your phone, open up a comic, and it was super easy to read. You didn’t have to worry about it being a printed page and zooming in on the panel and then twisting to another panel and having to move your phone. It was just simple, and you could do it on the subway, as long as you had coverage on the subway, which they've done in Hong Kong since fucking 2002. Also New York.

Matt: Yeah, if Krystal's has free Wifi, you can get it pretty much anywhere.

Alex: Yeah I know.

Matt: As far as the art goes, Valentine contains some beautiful stuff. Are you doing all the lettering and art digitally at this point?

Alex: All of Valentine is digital, and its just me and Christine. Originally, the stuff you’re looking at concerning the colors, in the new episodes it's just me and Christina. I write it, she draws it, and sends it back to me, I letter it and do the post production on it, and then we're done. This thing is literally made by two women on their own.

Matt: How long does it take to churn out one of these chapters?

Alex: It takes Christine about 5 weeks to do a chapter, and that’s like one of our ComiXology chapters, so you know, that’s about 5 of the mini episodes. I’ve written up through about chapter 16, and we are getting ahead. And what you’re reading, the beginning of volume two, as I’ve noted, is chapter 6. So we are so far ahead.

Matt: Well the book is great, and I’m a sucker for a book in a fantasy setting anyway. Dragons, fairies, cool swords, etc, it all appeals to me.

Alex: Yeah, and alot of people do and there aren’t a lot of good fantasy comics out there.

Matt: True, true.

Alex: If people want to check it out you can go to Thrillbent.com/valentinepromo (this has since been taken down, but you can enjoy the entirety of volume 1 free of charge) and they can try it out for free for a month and just gorge out on comics

Matt: Oh that's great. How often are they updated?

Alex: Its weekly, and we have like 52 weeks of content on Thrillbent. We're also available on Comixology so for those who use Comixology for their comics reading go to Comixology, download Valentine. Chapter 1 is free, and the Comixology chapters are the long ones. They are 5 weeks of Thrillbent episodes. They are how we originally conceived them in a much longer thing. So you download them, and there will be a new big fat chapter coming out weekly on Comixology until we are caught up and then we will probably go monthly, but for the next 12 weeks we’re weekly.

Matt: If you were to give someone that one reason to check Valentine out, what would that be?

Alex: Gosh, this is like a what's your favorite song question.

Matt: Haha, sorry about that.

Alex: No problem at all. It's just really exciting, and there is so much out there right now that is grim and dark and miserable. Valentine is, well you know how much we put Valentine through, but it's quite a positive book about a character who's got strong morals and is trying to make good choices in a world that he can’t understand since its so screwed up. It is not miserable however, although there is a ton of peril in it. It's just exciting in the old-fashioned pulp way.

Matt: You empathize with him a great deal, but the tone of the book isn't a pessimistic one.

Alex: Yeah, like he’s a hero, an old school version of a hero. It's somebody better looking than you, stronger than you, and going through worse things than you, but because of their choices and their adherence to their beliefs, you feel that they are going to end up on top.

Matt: Well thank you very much for taking the time to speak with me. I truly appreciate it. If they want more information where can they find you?

Alex: I'm at Alexdecampi.com so you can send people there if they want to check out more of my stuff, and I will be at New York Comic Con at table Y3.

Thanks to Alex for taking the time to sit down with me, and to Thrillbent for the opportunity to sit down with her. Really enjoyed the chat, and make sure to head here to give Valentine a read.

The CW has released new clip from The Flash, and it shows us the origin of Barry Allen's super powers. It's a great clip, and anyone who is looking forward to watching the series should give it a look.

After witnessing his mother's murder, and his father wrongly accused, Barry Allen is taken in by Detective West and his family. As Allen enters adulthood, he becomes a brilliant, yet socially awkward, forensic scientist for the Central City Police Department, whose obsession with his tragic past causes him to become an outcast among his peers. Allen tries to uncover the truth about his mother's murder and clear his father's name, which leads him to Harrison Wells' particle accelerator. When the accelerator causes an explosion, Allen is struck by lightning, and enters a coma for nine months. When he wakes up, he discovers he has the ability to move at superhuman speeds, though he is not the only metahumancreated in the wake of the explosion. As the violence related to metahuman criminals escalates, Allen vows to use his gift of speed to protect Central City with the help from a few close friends and associates who share his secrets while keeping his promise regarding his mother's murder.

The new series comes from co-creators Greg Berlanti and Andrew Kreisberg, who, along with Geoff Johns, wrote the pilot episode, which was helmed by Arrow pilot director David Nutter. It's set to premiere on October 7th, and I think you'll all like what you see.

I have a collection of photos and two videos of an amazing pinball machine prototype inspired by the cult classic film, The Big Lebowski. This this is so freakin' cool! I love all of the little details from the film that they managed to pack into this thing. It was created by Dutch Pinball, and they go into production next year. The pinball machine will cost $8,500, which means many of us will never be able to afford the luxury of getting one. It's still awesome though, and I'm happy that it exists. You can see even more photos here.
