Great Oscar Nominated Short about Undertakers - THIS WAY UP

Screen Shot 2014-08-07 at 6.17.01 PM.png

The oscar nominated animated short, This Way Up, tells the story of two undertakers who try to deliver a body to a graveyard. Of course, everything that can possibly go wrong does.

The film was produced by Nexus and directed by Smith & Foulkes, and it's very entertaining. It was nominated for an Oscar back in 2008, but recently popped up online for everyone to watch. You can no see for yourself why it was nominated for the prestigious award.

Laying the dead to rest has never been so much trouble.

The animated caper is a series of emotional and literal pitfalls for the pall-bearing team, as their journey and relationship unravel on an epic scale culminating in the pair joining the old lady in a trip through the underworld.

I love everything about this short. It's extremely funny and morbid. I hope you enjoy it! Thanks to io9 for the tip!

GALAXY QUEST Sequel Wanted by Everyone Involved

Director Dean Parisot's 1999 sci-fi comedy Galaxy Quest was a hell of a film. I love that movie, and over the years we've heard some talk of a sequel but nothing has ever materialized from that talk. The talking continues, but it's from all of the main players involved, and they all want to see a sequel happen.

MTV recently did an oral history of the film, and several members of the cast and crew came in to talk about the film. Those people included Tim Allen, Sigourney Allen, Sam Rockwell, Justin Long, director Dean Parisot, producer Mark Johnson, and writer Robert Gordon

You've got to remember that this movie was ahead of its time, and it was made in an era where geek culture wasn't as popular as it is now. At that time San Diego Comic-Con wasn't the huge popular convention that it is now. I think a sequel would do extremely now, and I would love it if it happened. Here's what everyone had to say about it:

Tim Allen: There’s a sequel somewhere. It’s written, but I haven’t really gotten a straight answer about it, but Hollywood is a very peculiar place. It is none of my business.

Writer Robert Gordon: On the record, I definitely have ideas for a sequel. Off the record, OK, turn your recorder off.

Justin Long: So many people ask me about a sequel.

Producer Mark Johnson: If we announced a sequel or a TV show, there’d be genuine excitement, not “It’s too late.” We’ve tried. I’d do it, Dean would do it. But we need Bob. It’s a Bob Gordon joint, but Bob is a very specific guy.

Sam Rockwell: F–k yeah, a sequel would be amazing. If it was a respectful script to “Galaxy Quest.”

Sigourney Weaver: Tell Bob, tell Dean, we are all ready for a sequel. I still have my costume!

Allen: How’s this for a sequel: it’s 15 years later. The Thermians come back, but they haven’t aged. Maybe they don’t have warp anymore so it took 15 years. They have to search for a new homeland. Sarris [the main villain] is gone but his family never forgets and you take it from there. . .

This needs to happen! Someone please make this happen! If there are ideas and everyone is ready and willing to come back for a sequel, just greenlight the damn thing.

When my 6-year-old daughter found out that Frozen's Anna and Elsa would be included in ABC's Once Upon A Time, she binge watched the series to get caught up on the show in preparation for their inclusion. She's very excited it, and she flipped out when I showed her these new photos giving us our first look at Georgina Haig as Frozen's Queen Elsa, Elizabeth Lail as Anna and, Scott Michael Foster as Kristoff. Those characters will be joined by Tyler Jacob Moore as Hans, while John Rhys-Davies will voice the rock troll King, Pabbie. The fourth season is set to premiere on September 28th.

The First Real-World Transformer has Been Created

the-first-real-world-transformer-has-been-created1

Harvard, MIT, and Cornell researchers have collaborated in creating a self-assembling robot, which looks to me like the first real-world Transformer.

The robot design was inspired by the Japanese art of origami, the folding robot can rearrange itself in minutes from a flat-packed sheet into a strong, motile, structurally complex body plan – without any help from us humans.

Harvard's Robert J. Wood had this to say about it:

"Getting a robot to assemble itself autonomously and actually perform a function has been a milestone we've been chasing for many years."

Cornell physicist and study collaborator Itai Cohen added:

"You can imagine a folded sheet of some material and popping in defects to make a stiff shield, or somehow deploying an object and giving it a rigid backbone. You can think of it as appendages that can be locked in place or a useful tool whose properties can be set once it has been deployed…. It is amazing that there are so many hidden scientific research problems buried in just a simple sheet of paper."

The robot only costs about $100 bucks to make. There's $80 for the motors, batteries and power controller, and about $20 for the body. What's great about the body is that it is made out of paper and Shrinky Dinks. You can read more about the project here. Thanks to io9!

C-3PO is the Dark Knight in STAR WARS and BATMAN Mashup Photo

Bad Robot has decided to play this Star Wars and Batman photo mashup game with director Zack Snyder. Over the last few weeks Snyder has released photos of Batman hanging out with R2-D2 and Superman as a Sith Lord. Today Bad Robot responded on their Twitter feed with C-3PO as the Dark Knight. It's called "THE C3PED CRUSADER," and it's amazing!

There has been a rumor that Snyder would be directing Star Wars Samurai film, but who knows if there's any truth to that.

Zack Snyder Defends Aquaman Saying he has "Badass" Potential

There's been a lot of talk regarding actor Jason Momoa playing Aquaman, and the character's place in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. I've never been a big fan of Aquaman, but it there's a way to work him into the story and have him be portrayed as a badass character I'll give him a chance. Director Zack Snyder recently jumped to the defense of Aquaman in an interview with CBS Detroit saying:

"You guys were disparaging, a little bit… I don't want to give anything away about the movie or anything like that, but Aquaman has some cool abilities. People are like, 'Oh what? Does he talk to animals? Because that seems like what he does. Or fish?' The cool thing with Aquaman is he's Triton, so you have to realize that could cut the flesh of Superman if they came in contact. That's a thing that's in the canon. He's super strong because, of course, he can exist at these super deep depths. So when he comes up here, he's crazy strong. Anyway, not to say he's in my movie or anything like that, but he has the potential to be bad ass, that's all I’m saying."

You can listen to the full interview here, but it kind of sounds to me like Aquaman will definitely be in the movie.

Well, it's official, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles sucks. At least I thought it did. My kids on the other hand absolutely loved it. That gives you an idea of the target market. It still could have been a good film though. Pixar and Disney manage to make great movies that both kids and adults can enjoy. If you're still not sure if this is a movie that you'll want to see or not, check out this new clip that give you an idea of the kind of ridiculous banter that the movie has to offer. Nightmarish New Cover for CHARLIE AND THE CHOCOLATE FACTORY

"It's got lifeless eyes, black eyes, like a doll's eyes. When it comes at you it doesn't seem to be livin'… until [s]he bites you, and those black eyes roll over white." - Jaws

This is the new cover for Roald Dahl's classic book, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. Penguin publishing created the new cover to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the novel, and it's kind of terrifying. This is part of Penguin's New Modern Classic series and they gave an explanation of the cover saying:

"This new image for Charlie and the Chocolate Factory looks at the children at the centre of the story, and highlights the way Roald Dahl's writing manages to embrace both the light and the dark aspects of life, ready for Charlie's debut amongst the adult titles in the Penguin Modern Classics series."

Those points definitely come across in the most nightmarish ways. Thanks to io9 for the tip.

First Look at Christoph Waltz in HORRIBLE BOSSES 2

Warner Bros. released a new photo from Horrible Bosses 2 giving us our first look at Christoph Waltz in the film. In the image he's having a little chat with Jason Bateman, Charlie Day and Jason Sudeikis on a golf course. Chris Pine, who plays Waltz's douchebag son, is standing behind him.

Fed up with answering to higher-ups, Nick (Bateman), Dale (Day) and Kurt (Sudeikis) decide to become their own bosses by launching their own business. But a slick investor soon pulls the rug out from under them. Outplayed and desperate, and with no legal recourse, the three would-be entrepreneurs hatch a misguided plan to kidnap the investor's adult son and ransom him to regain control of their company.

A bunch of new images have been released for Warner Bros. upcoming DC animated film Justice League: Throne of Atlantis. They feature characters such as The Flash, Wonder Woman, Superman, Green Lantern, Aquaman, and more.

Throne of Atlantis — to be released early next year on DVD, Blu-ray and for digital download and on demand — adapts a comic arc that pits the undersea nation of Atlantis against the surface world. Unlike the comic, the movie will focus on how young Arthur Curry discovers his aquatic heritage. Raised by his human father, when the movie begins he doesn't know that he is the heir to the throne of the watery kingdom.

Aquaman will be voiced by 90210's Matt Lanter, and he'll be joined by many of the Justice League: War cast including Jason O'Mara (Batman), Shemar Moore (Cyborg), Christopher Gorham (the Flash), Sean Astin (Shazam), Nathan Fillion (Green Lantern), Rosario Dawson (Wonder Woman), Jerry O'Connell (Superman), Sam Witwer (Orm), and Sumalee Montano (Meera).

Daisy-Ridley.jpg

Deadline has confirmed that Star Wars: Episode VII star Daisy Ridley will reprise her unknown role in eEpisode's VII and IX. The final two films in the trilogy have been set to be written and directed by Rian Johnson (Looper), and I couldn't be happier about that. I think he's the perfect guy to take on the Star Wars franchise.

All we really officially know about the story is that it's set about 30 years after the events of Star Wars: Episode VI Return of the Jedi, and it will star Harrison Ford, John Boyega, Adam Driver, Oscar Isaac, Andy Serkis, Domhnall Gleeson, Carrie Fisher, and Max von Sydow.

IFC Films has released a trailer for writer and director Peter Sattler's upcoming war drama  Camp X-Ray. The film stars Kristen Stewart as a young woman who "joins the military to be part of something bigger than herself and her small town roots."

The synopsis goes on to explain that "she ends up as a new guard at Guantanamo Bay instead, where her mission is far from black and white. Surrounded by hostile jihadists and aggressive squadmates, she strikes up an unusual friendship with one of the detainees. [It's a] story of two people, on opposite sides of a war, struggling to find their way through the ethical quagmire of Guantanamo Bay. And in the process, they form an unlikely bond that changes them both."

The movie premiered at Sundance and was met with mixed reviews. The movie is set to be released on October 17th.

Here's a cool piece of concept art that was created by Andy Park for Guardians of the Galaxy. It features the villain Nebula sporting a different costume design than what we ended up seeing in the final film.

He released the image on Twitter with the following caption:

"Had the most fun working on #GuardiansOfTheGalaxy My fav was designing Nebula! @KarenGillan2 was badass! #marvel"

Nebula is one of my favorite villains in the Marvel universe and I can't wait to see where they take the character in future movies.

Casey Affleck in Talks to Star in Disney's THE FINEST HOURS

Casey Affleck (Gone Baby Gone, The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford) is in talks to join Chris Pine in Disney's true story adventure drama The Finest Hours

Million Dollar Arm director Craig Gillespie is helming the project, which is an adaption of the book written by Casey Sherman and Michael J Tougias.

The story is set in 1952 and follows the coast guard rescue of 84 men off Cape Cod after two oil tankers collided and were torn in half by waves during a fierce blizzard.

Affleck and Pine are both incredible actors who seem to fit perfectly in this type of movie. I love this story, and it's sure to make an incredible film.

Here's the synopsis from the book:

In the winter of 1952, New England was battered by the most brutal nor'easter in years. As the weather wreaked havoc on land, the freezing Atlantic became a wind-whipped zone of peril.

In the early hours of Monday, February 18, while the storm raged, two oil tankers, the Pendleton and the Fort Mercer, found themselves in the same horrifying predicament. Built with "dirty steel," and not prepared to withstand such ferocious seas, both tankers split in two, leaving the dozens of men on board utterly at the Atlantic's mercy.

The Finest Hours is the gripping, true story of the valiant attempt to rescue the souls huddling inside the broken halves of the two ships. Coast Guard cutters raced to the aid of those on the Fort Mercer, and when it became apparent that the halves of the Pendleton were in danger of capsizing, the Guard sent out two thirty-six-foot lifeboats as well. These wooden boats, manned by only four seamen, were dwarfed by the enormous seventy-foot seas. As the tiny rescue vessels set out from the coast of Cape Cod, the men aboard were all fully aware that they were embarking on what could easily become a suicide mission.

The spellbinding tale is overflowing with breathtaking scenes that sear themselves into the mind's eye, as boats capsize, bows and sterns crash into one another, and men hurl themselves into the raging sea in their terrifying battle for survival.

Not all of the eighty-four men caught at sea in the midst of that brutal storm survived, but considering the odds, it's a miracle -- and a testament to their bravery -- that any came home to tell their tales at all.

Michael J. Tougias and Casey Sherman have seamlessly woven together their extensive research and firsthand interviews to create an unforgettable tale of heroism, triumph, and tragedy, one that truly tells of the Coast Guard's finest hours.
