Bruce Willis Joins the Sci-Fi Thriller VICE

Bruce Willis is set to star in a new sci-fi thriller called Vice, which is said to have a Westworld-meets-Grand Theft Auto vibe. He will star along side Ambyr Childers (2 Guns, Ray Donovan).

The story is set on "a resort in the future where the staff are lifelike synthetic beings and the rich can live out their darkest fantasies. The pseudo-paradise has an 'anything goes' policy, given that the memories of the androids reset every night. One female staffer (Childers), however, suffers a glitch and is flooded with all her memories. Realizing the horror she has been made to suffer, she vows revenge." Willis will be playing the owner of the resort.

This sounds like it could be a fun film project. Most of the stuff Willis makes is entertaining, so I imagine it will be the same for this one.

THE RAID 2: BERANDAL Review - Sundance ’14

Writer/Director: Gareth Evans

Cast: Iko Uwais, Yayan Ruhian, Arifin Putra, Oka Antara, Tio Pakusadewo, and Alex Abbad

Story and Direction

In the Raid 2: Berandal, writer-director Gareth Evans sets a new bar for action movies by taking the groundbreaking fight choreography of the first movie to greater heights with bigger set pieces, badder villains, and bolder, more inventive action sequences that will leave you reeling.

Fans of the self-contained first movie — about a S.W.A.T. team who must fight their way through a drug-lord’s safe house — have much more to sink their teeth into – action and story wise – in the sequel. Picking up moments after the events of The Raid, The Raid 2 finds rookie Officer Rama forced to go undercover to infiltrate an organized crime syndicate.

With a clearly bigger budget this time around, the scope, cinematography, and breathtaking camerawork they were able to achieve is on par with even bigger budgeted blockbusters like Chris Nolan’s Dark Knight trilogy. Without any big-name stars or shameless product placement getting in the way, you’re allowed to be completely sucked into this world of organized crime, revenge, redemption, and of course, fighting… lots of fighting.

Performances

Iko Uwais is back as our protagonist Rama, only this time he’s given much more to do physically. as well as dramatically. With his work in these two Raid films alone, Uwais’ name deserves to be up there with modern martial arts greats like Jet Li and Tony Jaa. Arifin Putra gives a breakout performance as the incarcerated son of the mob boss that Rama must get close to. Putra looks like a cross between the late Brandon Lee and a young Bruce Campbell. Since he speaks English with a perfect American accent, I'd expect to see him in some English language films in the near future.

The rest of the cast also does an amazing job, although a couple of the more cartoony characters (combined with the sheer length and brutality of some of the fights) eat away at some of the film's believability -- though they do establish early on almost superhero-like strength from Rama when he uses his prison cell wall as a punching bag.

Similar To

With Evans reuniting his superbly skilled cast (even reusing actors who played characters that died in the first film), this sequel is obviously like the first, just on a much larger scale. There are plenty more twists and turns in the story, as well, with the plot having elements similar to The Departed.

Chances You’ll See it in Theaters

The film was developed and will be distributed by Sony Pictures, so obviously you’ll get to see this highly anticipated sequel. The question is, what version will you get to see in theaters? The violence in this movie is so graphic and unforgiving that people trickled out of the screening I was in after particularly violent scenes. I don’t know how the cut we saw wouldn’t get slapped with an NC-17 rating. Considering its 148-minute run time, it will probably get trimmed down anyway. Our guess is that U.S. audiences will get a cut-down theatrical version of the film, and an “unrated” Blu-ray edition.

Official Synopsis

Immediately following the events of the original, The Raid 2 tracks Officer Rama as he is pressured to join an anticorruption task force to guarantee protection for his wife and child. His mission is to get close to a new mob boss, Bangun, by befriending his incarcerated son, Uco. Rama must hunt for information linking Bangun with corruption in the Jakarta Police Department while pursuing a dangerous and personal vendetta that threatens to consume him and bring his mission—and the organized crime syndicate—down around him.

DC UNIVERSE ONLINE: War of the Light Begins

WaroftheLightPt1 copy.jpg

Ever since DC Universe Online added the green and yellow green slingers to the mix I've been hoping the extended corps would make their way in as well. Turns out later this year I will get my wish, as Sony and DC are introducing the Red Corps (i.e.Rage) in part one of their War of the Light DLC. You can peep the trailer below, and it's fine if you do, I won't be offended.

Ha! Just kidding, I'm offended. Anyway, pretty sweet, right? If you want to get a closer look at how the red light powers work, scroll down a bit to catch a developer walkthrough on the corp that likes to vomit blood everywhere. They also have a cat among their members, but that's kind of cool so no points off for that one.

The DLC is also bringing in some of the other corps, including the favorite of yours truly, the Hope corps, and from the screens the first to enlist will be Saint Walker and Barry Allen. For those who remember Blackest Night, Barry ended up with a blue ring during the series, and he makes his return to the blue duds here. Also included are some co-op operations, which will include some new locales, namely Mogo and Ranx. One is a sentient planet, the other a sentient city.

Sentences like that last one are the reason I love comics so darn much. This does not excuse the cosmic treadmill however, as that's just lame.

Alright, soapbox over. The developers are also making some changes to the way loot drops and where some of the more elite armor is available at, so if you're a current player of DCUO or have taken a break from the MMO, than this might just be something worth coming back for.

Joseph Gordon-Levitt Cast In Robert Zemeckis' TO REACH THE CLOUDS

Joseph Gordon-Levitt is set to team up with director Robert Zemekis in a film called To Reach the Clouds. It's an adaptation of Philippe Petit's memoir of the same name. For those of you not familiar with the name, he was the subject of the 2008 documentary Man On Wire. He's the high wire walker who made history in 1974 when he walked across a wire strung 1350 feet above the ground between New York City's Twin Towers… without permission.

Zemekis has slowly been pushing the project forward, but with Gordon-Levitt on board as Petit, the production is sure to start picking up some speed. I think Gordon-Levitt is a great choice to take on part, and I think this subject matter will make for a great movie, especially with Zemekis behind the camera.

One late-summer day, a feat of unimaginable audacity was perpetrated on the twin towers of the World Trade Center. The year was 1974. A hundred thousand people gathered on the ground to watch in awe as twenty-four-year-old high wire artist Philippe Petit made eight crossings between the all-but-completed towers, a quarter mile above the earth, over the course of nearly an hour.

THE SIGNAL Review - Mind Bending Sc-Fi Thriller: Sundance '14

$

The Signal was a very pleasant surprise. This was a very well made sci-fi thriller. It's always nice to see a low budget sci-fi done right. With the development of any movie, the main focus should be the story and script. If those are good, then everything else should fall into place, and it did with The Signal. The film didn't rely heavily on special effects, it's just is one of those movies that has a fantastic story with very likable characters. From the opening shot of the film and the first introduction we have of the characters, I knew I was going to like this movie no matter where it went, and it went to some pretty crazy places!

The story follows three friends, two of which are MIT students who are into hacking. They are on a cross country road trip to California, and along the way they are being harassed by a rival hacker named Nomad. While driving through Nevada they find the location of the hacker and decide to take a detour to pay him a visit. They end up in the middle of the desert at an abounded house, and from there things take a turn for the worse. The friends are separated, and they wake up to find themselves in some kind of government facility where they are being held captive, told they are contaminated, and questioned about themselves and put through some tests. As they are there they begin to discover they are part of something a lot more epic than they imagined.

The film had plenty of fun twists and turns to keep the audience guessing about what was really going on. I had my theories while watching the movie, some of which were right. But, I didn't realize the level to where they would take it. I was impressed by what this movie delivered. It had drama, action, comedy, and really cool sci-fi elements. They did some fantastic and surprising stuff with the special effects as well. There's a lot of work and love that was put into this movie and it sure paid off.

The movie was co-written and directed by William Eubank and it stars Brenton Thwaites, Olivia Cooke, Beau Knapp, and Laurence Fishburne. All of the actors did a fantastic job, and the direction was pretty amazing. It was seriously a beautifully shot film with amazing cinematography.

I really hope that this movie gets a theatrical release because it deserves to be seen on the big screen. The Signal has definitely made it on my list of favorite films at Sundance, and it's a movie I know most of you will enjoy watching. With the right marketing I could see this movie being a decent hit, and also find a cult following. Just see the movie whenever you get a chance! It's a mind-bending experience.

Garrett Hedlund to Play Captain Hook in PAN

Tron: Legacy co-star Garrett Hedlund has landed the lead role of Hook in director Joe Wright's Peter Pan film, Pan. It will be a new take on the J.M. Barrie classic novel. He will join Hugh Jackman who will be playing Blackbeard.

According to Deadline, the role came down to three actors, Hedlund, Boardwalk Empire‘s Jack Huston, and Ezra Miller from The Perks Of Being A Wallflower. Personally I think they should have went with Huston. I'm not sure why they went with Hedlund. He's a talented actor, but I don't really see him in the role of Hook.

The script is coming from Jason Fuchs, and the story follows an orphan who is taken to the magical world of Neverland, where he becomes the savior of the natives and leads a rebellion against evil pirates.

Warner Bros has set a release date of June 16th, 2015, and it will be shot in 3D.

Insane Trailer for DEAD SNOW 2: RED VS. DEAD

$

Dead Snow 2: Red Vs. Dead premiered up at the Sundance Film Festival, and I've been hearing a lot of positive buzz. I have yet to see it myself, but judging from this crazy trailer it looks insane. Now I'm even more excited to watch it! I really enjoyed the first film, and the sequel looks like it going to be even more gleefully deranged. Here's the synopsis...

If the worst day of your life consisted of accidentally killing your girlfriend with an axe, chain-sawing your own arm off, and watching in horror as your closest friends were devoured by a zombified Nazi battalion, you'd have to assume that things couldn't get much worse. In Martin's case, that was only the beginning.

Picking up immediately where the original left off, Dead Snow; Red vs. Dead wastes no time getting right to the gore-filled action, leaving a bloody trail of intestines in its wake. Director Tommy Wirkola returns to the helm with a vengeance, coming up with more inventive ways to maim and dismember than you ever thought possible. Combining wry humor with horrific worst-case scenarios, this follow-up to the 2009 Park City at Midnight classic is sure to shock the weak-of-heart and delight even the most hard-core fans of the horror genre. Colonel Herzog is back, and he is not to be f__ked with.

The movie is set to be released on February 14th, the perfect Valentine's Day date movie!

Stan Lee's Marvel movie cameo streak is about to end with James Gunn's Guardians of the Galaxy. He's been appearing in Marvel films for years, but apparently he won't be be making a cameo in the sci-fi space adventure. When asked about it on the video podcast Dweebcast, this is what he said...

"No, I’m afraid not. This is the one group I didn’t create. I didn’t write Guardians of the Galaxy. I’m not even sure who they all are! I can’t wait to see the movie."

Lee is 91 years old and seems to still be going strong. I guess there's just no place for him in this alien universe. I've also included a video which features all of the cameos Lee has done over the years.
