Sundance '14 Review: Ethan Hawke's BOYHOOD - 12 Years in the Making

$

0

In a surprising Sundance twist, director Richard Linklater's long-awaited film, Boyhood, was the last one added to the film line-up at the festival. It quickly became one of the most anticipated films. For those of you not familiar with Linklater's work, he directed Before SunriseBefore Sunset, and Before Midnight, all of which starred Ethan Hawke. Well, years ago Hawke teamed up with him for this very ambitious film project that turned out to be pretty incredible.

What makes this movie so unique is the fact that is was shot over the course of twelve years! It follows the lives of a boy, his sister, and his divorced mother and father. It was quite spectacular watching these kids and the parents grow up throughout the course of the film. Nothing like this has really ever been done before. The closest thing I can compare to is the Harry Potter film series in terms of watching the actors/characters grow older over the course of the franchise. Only this film manages to tell a family's twelve year story in about three hours.

A movie like this might be considered a coming of age story, but it's really kind of a coming of life story. There's so much that happens in the course of a person's life, so many twists and turns and crazy emotions. This movie touches on a lot of the crazy things that life can throw at a person. It's an epic, but quiet, drama about living life. Other movies have tried to do that, like Mr. Holland's Opus, but this one actually pulls it off in a way that feels genuinely honest.

If you have seen and enjoyed any of Linklater's previous films, then you'll be happy to know that this is definitely one of his best. The writing and direction is top notch storytelling, and it's kind of amazing that he was able to keep it consistent and fresh while shooting it over such a long period of time with incredibly long gaps in between shoots.

It was truly an amazing film, and I loved watching the growth of the actors over the course of the movie and seeing how the story and time molded the characters. During the Q&A after the screening, Ellar Coltrane, the boy of Boyhood, explained that the older he got the more his character began to merge with his own life and personality, which I thought was interesting. After all, you never know what could happen over the course of twelve years.

The movie also starred Patricia Arquette and the director's daughter, Lorelei Linklater, who said that she wanted her dad to kill off her character after a couple years of shooting. Everyone did a wonderful job in the film, and they all gave very natural performances.

I do have to say, though, that the movie is way too long. It was a three hour movie, and it definitely felt like it. There is a lot of stuff that could be cut out, and maybe it will before the movie is released. Like most Sundance films, this will probably get a limited theatrical release.

If you're looking to see an epic family drama, or are just curious what a movie that was twelve years in the making looks like, then you'll want to check this one out. It truly is something special, and it will be interesting to see if anyone else ever tries to do something like this again.

SHERLOCK Will Continue until Benedict Cumberbatch "Gets Too Famous"

Sherlock is such an awesome series, and we've heard that Steven Moffat is already working on seasons four and five. The big question is… when will they end the series? I figured it would happen at five, but according to Moffat, "It will continue until Benedict gets too famous." Yeah, he said it half jokingly, but we all know that he's serious. There's no doubt that Moffat, Benedict Cumberbatch, and Martin Freeman will continue to do the series as long as they can. The two main actors are already getting busier and busier, so there will come a time when they won't be able to do it anymore. I think they will all stick with it as long as they possibly can, though. Hopefully it's a long time!

Cumberbatch was asked whether he feels overwhelmed playing Sherlock, and the actor dismissed any notion of that, hinting that he doesn't really see an end date,

"I'm fine with it. I'm going to keep going with it. It's a schedule-providing thing... I love it. I find it very invigorating."

So Sherlock fans can rejoice that the excitement to keep the series going is still there. Who knows how long the series will run, but I will be completely happy with whatever they can give us. If they keep pumping out awesome stories, then people will keep watching, and if people keep watching, then hopefully the show will go on!

theraid2stillyahoo_large85875.jpg

Are you ready to see more action-packed awesomeness from The Raid 2: Berandal!? Of course you are! Why wouldn't you be? The Raid is one of the greatest action movies of all time, and it sure looks like the sequel is going to give it a run for its money. This new trailer does not disappoint. If the first teaser trailer didn't do it for you, then this one is definitely going to get the adrenaline pumping through your body. This movie looks absolutely amazing!

He thought it was over. After fighting his way out of a building filled with gangsters and madmen – a fight that left the bodies of police and gangsters alike piled in the halls – rookie Jakarta cop Rama thought it was done and he could resume a normal life. He couldn’t have been more wrong.

Formidable though they may have been, Rama’s opponents in that fateful building were nothing more than small fish swimming in a pond much larger than he ever dreamed possible. And his triumph over the small fry has attracted the attention of the predators farther up the food chain. His family at risk, Rama has only one choice to protect his infant son and wife: He must go undercover to enter the criminal underworld himself and climb through the hierarchy of competing forces until it leads him to the corrupt politicians and police pulling the strings at the top of the heap.

And so Rama begins a new odyssey of violence, a journey that will force him to set aside his own life and history and take on a new identity as the violent offender “Yuda.” In prison he must gain the confidence of Uco – the son of a prominent gang kingpin – to join the gang himself, laying his own life on the line in a desperate all-or-nothing gambit to bring the whole rotten enterprise to an end.

The movie is set to premiere at Sundance, and I can't freakin' wait to see it!

Intense Trailer for James Franco's CHILD OF GOD

James Franco has a pretty awesome career acting, directing, teaching, and just being a pretty rad guy. He's got an incredibly intense looking new film coming out that he directed called Child of God, which is based on the novel by Cormac McCarthy. The movie looks really freakin' good, and it looks like it's going to keep audiences on the edge of their seats.

The story follows a man named Lester Ballard, "a dispossessed, violent man whom the narrator describes as 'a child of God much like yourself perhaps.' Ballard’s life is a disastrous attempt to exist outside the social order. Successively deprived of parents and homes and with few other ties, Ballard descends literally and figuratively to the level of a cave dweller as he falls deeper into crime and degradation.”

The film also stars Jim Parrack, Tim Blake Nelson, Scott Haze, Jeremy Ambler, Fallon Goodson, Vince Jolivette, Brian Lally, Nina Ljeti, Terrance Huff, Elena McGhee, and Nathan Mohebbi.

There's no release date set for the movie yet, but it sure looks like it's going to be worth watching. It's going to be one crazy violent thriller.

Sundance '14 Review - JAMIE MARKS IS DEAD - Ghost Thriller

$
0
0

Jamie Marks is Dead was kind of a ridiculous film. It had an interesting concept, and it's a very different and unique take on the ghost story horror genre. I'm a big horror and ghost story fan, but this was more of a supernatural drama about a teenager's death and its hard hitting effects on one of his classmates.

The film is based on a book called One of Sorrow, written by Christopher Barzak. The story is set in a small town, and it starts out with the discovery of a dead bullied teenage boy named Jamie, who no one really knew. The main character, Adam, becomes obsessed and fascinated with the dead teenager, and Jamie's ghost eventually appears to him and his friend Gracie, who also happens to be his love interest.

Things get really wired when Adam finds himself caught between the world of the living and the world of the dead. As he has a growing romance with Gracie, he also feels a deep connection to the ghost Jamie, who is bringing him closer to the world of the dead. According to the synopsis, "Jamie Marks Is Dead is about the choices one boy must make to help another free himself and accept his fate."

The movie has a very dark and eerie vibe to it all the way through. I have to say it was strange watching a teenage boy kind of falling for a ghost, but what can you do? It must be one of those teenage experimental phases. The movie did have some interesting elements, though, when Jamie starts to expose Adam to the other side of the ghostly world. What was interesting about these ghosts is that they were physical entities. It's like they weren't really ghosts.

The film was directed by Carter Smith, who also made The Ruins, which I actually really enjoyed. I'm not sure what he was tying to do with this new film. Apparently, the focus of the film was supposed to be the teenage psyche and small-town life, and I guess in that aspect of things there was something there. I just didn't connect with it.

If the movie ever ends up getting released, it's something you can wait for when when it pops up on Netflix.

The Raid 2: Berandal is set to premiere at The Sundance Film Festival soon. It's my most anticipated movie, and there's no doubt that it's going to kick insane ass! While we wait to see it, I came across some new images features some characters from from the movie that come along with some character information. For example, Hammer Girl, who is pictured directly below, has a brother named Baseball Bat Man, which I thought was pretty funny.

“Picking up right where the first film ends, ‘The Raid 2′ follows Rama (Uwais) as he goes undercover and infiltrates the ranks of a ruthless Jakarta crime syndicate in order to protect his family and uncover the corruption in his own police force.“

The movie should be released sometime later this year, but we'll let you know what we thought of the movie after we watch it tomorrow! You can watch the trailer for the film here.

Aaron Paul Up for Role in THE DARK TOWER Film

$

I've been curious about what's currently going on with Ron Howard's feature film adaptation of Stephen King's The Dark Tower series. It's been awhile since we've heard anything. The film was announced back in 2010, and the last we heard it got delayed. Over the years both Javier Bardem and Russell Crowe have been reportedly attached to the project as the lead character, Roland Deschain. Now it looks like another actor could eventually end up being cast. During a recent interview with AICN, Breaking Bad star Aaron Paul says he's been meeting with Howard for the character of Eddie Dean, which would be pretty badass!

"I've had a ton of meetings on that. I just had a general sit down with Ron Howard, who is a huge fan of the show (Breaking Bad), which is such a crazy thing to even think that Ron Howard even knows who I am. They're definitely planning on making it. I'm excited. Their goal is to do three films, but also have a television element to it, which will be very interesting. From what I hear, Eddie Dean is a pretty epic, iconic character."

First of all, Paul would be amazing in this role. Secondly, I'm just so freakin' happy to hear the the movie is still moving forward! I was worried that the next time it came up in the news, it would be reported that the project was dead. Thankfully that's not the case, it's just slowly getting more and more awesome.

The character Eddie Dean was Introduced in the second book of the series, The Drawing of the Three. He was a drug addict living in New York and was pulled to the world of The Dark Tower. There he joined Deschain in his quest for the Tower.

I can't wait for these movies to finally get made!

Sundance '14 Review: Zach Braff's WISH I WAS HERE

$
0
0

Director: Zach Braff

Screenwriters: Zach Braff, Adam Braff

Cast: Zach Braff, Kate Hudson, Mandy Patinkin, Josh Gad, Ashley Greene, Joey King, Pierce Gagnon

Story and Direction

In Zach Braff's follow up to 2004's Garden State, he has more to riff on about struggling actors and strained father/son relationships. Wish I Wish Was Here stars Braff as an out-of-work actor who takes on the responsibility of homeschooling his son and daughter when his ailing father can no longer pay their tuition.

If you bring in Garden State as a measuring stick for this film, you're gonna leave disappointed. It simply lacks the flare and atmosphere that made Braff's directorial debut so engaging. He does provide yet another great soundtrack, but the music isn’t nearly as integral to film as it was in his previous effort. I’ll admit, there are genuinely funny and touching moments. However, the movie falls into a tedious pattern very quickly -- a loop of out of place sci-fi dream sequences, pandering geek references, and characters imparting impossibly eloquent wisdom to each other… throw in a cameo and repeat.

Performances

While it takes a while for the story to find its footing, the cast is instantly likable. Braff enlisted a couple of the strongest child actors to play his daughter and son -- his Oz The Great and Powerful co-star Joey King and Looper's Pierce Gagnon. Along with Braff himself, King and Gagnon provide much of the laughs. King also carries a couple of the heavier scenes. As Braff's genius/failure of a brother, Josh Gad is wonderful, but the romantic plot line between him and Ashley Greene is a bit unbearable. Kate Hudson and Mandy Patinkin round out the cast and give solid performances as Braff's breadwinner wife and his crotchety father, respectively.

Similar To

Again, even if Braff’s character sounds very similar on paper, this is NOT Garden State 2 (although if it were, I'm guessing the Los Angeles set comedy would be called Golden State?). This looks and feels like a more traditional comedy for the most part with some of Braff’s more familiar touches creeping in toward the end of the film.

Chances You’ll See It In Theaters

Wish I Was Here has been picked up by Focus Features. Expect it in a theater near you.

Official Synopsis:

Following his celebrated debut feature, Garden State, Zach Braff delivers a new postcard from the edge of existential crisis, this time playing a thirtysomething family man wrestling with a few minor hindrances—like his disapproving father, an elusive God, and yes, adult responsibility. Aidan Bloom is a pot-smoking actor whose last job, a dandruff commercial, was longer ago than he cares to admit. Pursuing his thespian dream has landed him and his wife in tough financial straits, so when his grumpy father can no longer pay for the kids to attend Jewish Yeshiva, Aidan opts for homeschooling. To the chagrin of his hyperdisciplined, religious daughter and the delight of his less-than-studious son, Aidan takes matters into his own imaginative hands, rather than sticking to the boring old traditional curriculum.

Are any of you hungry for some possible spoiler-filled information for Zack Snyder's Batman Vs. Superman? If you are, today is your luck day. If not, then I suggest you don't read ahead because if any of these story points are true, they are big spoilers.

The following information comes from a message board for “a nexus of hardcore gamers, enthusiast press, and video game industry developers and publishers” called NeoGaf. The poster goes by the name James Woods, and you need to take this information with a grain of salt, because it could all be bullshit.

The guy who posted the following information says, “My source is someone from the art department that supposedly got shitcanned (apparently a bunch of them were fired). I confirm nothing. Just passing along what I heard. Take it with the proper amount of salt.”

Thanks to Latino-Review for the heads up on the following information. One last time: SPOILERS or Bullshit SPOILERS… you decide.

  • The villians are Lex Luthor and Metallo
  • Batman forms a UN type deal to stop Superman from destroying another city
  • Aquaman is in it, but not called Aquaman. He’s there because the world engine in the ocean did something to the fish
  • Wonder woman poses as a Wayne Enterprises investor to retrieve an item that belongs to her people.
  • Lex Luthor is in the shadows a lot, a manipulator. Not much face time with Superman.
  • Robin betrayed Batman at some point, leading to a falling out between them
  • The Batcave was super cool looking, and the mobile looked similar to Burton’s
  • Lois is investigating Lex.
  • Metallo “kills” Clark
  • The Daily Planet is bought by Lex Luthor for PR purposes
  • At the end Superman is living in exile, and the Justice League is a government approved superhero team.

Whatever the movie ends up being, I'm still looking forward to it! This information might also come from an early draft of the script that has since been changed.

The movie comes out on May 16th, 2016. We've sure got a long way to go. Hopefully the wait is worth it.

Kevin Smith has more to Say About Ben Affleck's Batman Suit

$

Just yesterday Jennifer Garner talked to Entertainment Weekly and was asked about the Batman suit her husband Ben Affleck will be wearing in the upcoming film Batman Vs. Superman. She said, ”I’ve seen the suit. The suit is unbelievably cool. It’s a total reinvention. It looks great.” It's not much, but she obviously seems to like it. Prior to that, Kevin Smith revealed that he saw the suit as well and gushed about his excitement for it, saying,

"You have not seen this costume in a movie, on film before. For a comic book fan, it was mind-bending… Because every other movie has done this Matrix-y black armor thing… There wasn’t a single nipple on this fucking suit man… I think everyone is just gonna be like ‘Holy Shit!’ It’s its own thing, man. We haven’t been down this path before."

Smith is back with another statement about the suit design that he saw. While talking to Comic Book Therapy, the writer and director said that they gave fans the suit "they always wanted to see." Here's the full quote,

“I talked about it on Hollywood Babble-On, but I have seen the suit. I did this Man Of Steel Yahoo, fan event when the DVD came out. I was hosting Zack Snyder was there, Amy Adams, we had Henry Cavill from satellite over in the UK, and you know it was all about Man of Steel. And at one point Zack talked a little bit about the future and Batman Vs Superman, but when the show was all done, Zack was all like ‘Kev come here, come here’, and he takes me over to the corner and whips out his phone, and he shows me a picture of Batman. Live action version of Batman. A very familiar Batman, I might add. It didn’t look like any of the cinematic Batmans that have ever gone before. He shows me that picture and behind Batman…Superman in the suit looming in the distance. Both on a roof top kind of thing. It was on a set, a little set the put together for this photo shoot. So I was like ‘Oh my god! Is that the suit?! The suit looks amazing! Did you get people to model it?’ And he goes, ‘That’s your boy.’ And I look closely and it’s Ben Affleck wearing the suit. The suit, it is not mine to spill, in terms of what it looks like, you’ll see it. They’ll tell you when they want you to know, but any Batman fan is going to be F—ing pleased. I’m going to tell you that right now. They gave you the suit you all wanted to see.”

I seriously can't wait to see the suit design for myself. I've got high expectations, and I'm expecting to be blown away by its awesomeness. One day the suit will be revealed to the world. In the meantime, all we have is the word of people who are lucky enough to have already seen it.
