Epic Fan-Made MASTERS OF THE UNIVERSE LEGO Series

LEGO master Alex Jones, a.k.a. Orion Pax, has created an epic LEGO universe based on He-Man and the Masters of the Universe. There are so many characters that I forgot about until I went through all of the LEGO characters Jones designed. Not only did he create the characters, though, he created all of the playsets and vehicles from the series and action figure franchise. This is an amazing series, and it's one that needs to exist for real one day. To see the full collection click here, but I posted a lot of them below.

Fun Poster for the Movie Secretly Shot at Disneyland - ESCAPE FROM TOMORROW

Here's a fun and kind of twisted movie poster for the insanely surreal Disneyland film Escape From Tomorrow . The movie was secretly shot at the Disney theme parks, and I'm actually excited that you'll get the chance to see this movie. I thought for sure that Disney would shut this sucker down, but it's set to be released on October 11th. As I've said before, this is a film that must be experienced because of how bizarre it is.

Jim White is an average American family man, mostly content to exist within his humdrum reality. At the tail end of a theme park vacation with his loving wife and two beautiful children, he is awakened by an unsettling phone call from his boss, who tells him that he has lost his job. Unwilling to disturb their sabbatical, Jim holds off on breaking the news to his family so they can enjoy their last day at the idyllic and beloved tourist destination. In desperate need of a distraction, he finds one amidst the long lines at the park—two attractive and fun-loving teenage girls. In his fractured state, Jim falls obsessively in love, making any excuse he can to follow them everywhere. Along the way, his paranoid psyche spirals even further downward, and the fine line between fantasy and reality becomes blurred.

This is what Eli had to say about the film in his review

I absolutely loved the satirical humor in the first 2/3 of the movie. There were so many well-written scenes that really feel authentic to what a "not-so-magical" day at the "Happiest Place on Earth" is like. The film's final act is what will polarize audiences. You'll either love or hate the bizarre turn this takes. Even though this "line between fantasy and reality" is set up throughout the movie, it turns into something I personally found hard to enjoy. Not only could I not make heads or tails of the ending, it just stopped being funny and resorted to gross-out humor.

Here's a deleted scene from one of my favorite episodes of The Walking Dead season 3. The Episode is called "Clear," and this scene is a extended version of Morgan's powerful tirade to Rick. It's one of those non-zombie killing scenes that proves how amazing this series really is. This episode was written by Scott Gimple, who is the new showrunner on the series. Check out the extended scene!

Arnold Schwarzengger has posted another photo from the set of The Expendables 3, this one of him hanging out with a bloodied up Sylvester Stallone and director Patrick Hughes. I hope this movie ends up being as action-packed and fun as the first two.

In THE EXPENDABLES 3, Barney (Stallone), Christmas (Statham) and the rest of the team comes face-to-face with Conrad Stonebanks (Gibson), who years ago co-founded The Expendables with Barney. Stonebanks subsequently became a ruthless arms trader and someone who Barney was forced to kill… or so he thought. Stonebanks, who eluded death once before, now is making it his mission to end The Expendables -- but Barney has other plans. Barney decides that he has to fight old blood with new blood, and brings in a new era of Expendables team members, recruiting individuals who are younger, faster and more tech-savvy. The latest mission becomes a clash of classic old-school style versus high-tech expertise in the Expendables’ most personal battle yet.

The movie will arrive in theaters on August 15th, 2014.

Mad Men's Jared Harris Joins MAN FROM U.N.C.L.E.

Mad Men star Jared Harris has been cast in Guy Ritchie's upcoming spy thriller, The  Man From U.N.C.L.E. The movie also stars Henry Cavill as agent Napoleon Solo and Armie Hammer as agent Illya Kuryakin. The two characters work for the mysterious United Network Command for Law and Enforcement (U.N.C.L.E.). Alicia Vikander and Hugh Grant also have roles in the film.

The Man From U.N.C.L.E. is based on the TV series which ran from 1964-68.  I've never seen the show, but the story follows "two agents of the United Network Command for Law Enforcement. With gadgets and their wits and charm, they fought the evil forces of Thrush."

There's a solidly awesome group of talented people involved with this movie so I'm sure it going to end up being a really good movie. I'm looking forward to seeing what Ritchie does with this.

POKEMON Direct Recap

In this second Pokemon Direct, we hear from Tsunekaz Ishihara, Satoru Iwata, and Junichi Masuda as they reminisce about the history of the Pokemon franchise and talk about new features of the upcoming Pokemon X/Y .

After getting all teary-eyed and nostalgic about the old brick GameBoys with their link cables, they start talking about the evolution of mutiplayer gameplay. The Player Search System will allow people to battle and trade online. Additionally, Pokemon will now be stored in the cloud via the online service "Pokemon Box", although this will require an annual fee. This is how Pokemon from previous games can be transferred to the upcoming generation.

As rumored, a professor in the game will give you one of the original three Pokemon starters--Charmander, Bulbasaur, or Squirtle. These Pokemon, when evolved, will be among those to receive Mega Evolutions . Mega Venusaur looks kinda lame (who picks Bulbasaur anyway?), Charizard gets more draconian, and Blastoise has one huge cannon on its back instead of two smaller ones. Also confirmed is that "a lot of other Pokemon" will get these badass Mega Evolutions.

I love hearing these Japanese men get adorably geeky as they say things like, " There will be a moment when a player's feelings go into the game, and that's when Mega Evolution happens" or "Difficulties were converted into fun." I really like the Nintendo Direct format because it lets us see the developers' passion about these games.

Pokemon X/Y will release globally on October 12. The previously announced special edition Pokemon 3DS XL will be released in North America on September 27. And if you're not willing to shell out the cash for that, remember, Nintendo just announced their budget option, the 2DS, which will play all 3DS games.

Brad Bird is currently in Vancouver shooting Disney's highly anticipated sci-fi film, Tomorrowland. A few set photos have surfaced featuring the retro look of the film and giving us our first look at Hugh Laurie in character. The photos here are supposed to be set at the 1964 New York World's Fair, which is why you're seeing stuff from the It's a Small World attraction.

Bound by a shared destiny, a bright, optimistic teen bursting with scientific curiosity and a former boy-genius inventor jaded by disillusionment embark on a danger-filled mission to unearth the secrets of an enigmatic place somewhere in time and space that exists in their collective memory as “Tomorrowland.”

The movie comes out on December 12th, 2014. The photos below come from yvrshoots.

Review: DIABLO III (Console Version) - What Couches Were Made For

$

0

When I first heard that Diablo III was being ported to consoles I, like probably many others, was skeptical. After playing it, I cannot believe how natural it feels to play with a controller in my hand, but more importantly, it is so damn fun. Not just normal fun, but hilariously fun. Fun that spawns events and parties for years to come. Fun that exemplifies what couch co-op should be.

Sitting on the couch with four of my friends wading through demonic armies elicits emotions I haven’t felt since the days of Phantasy Star Online on the Gamecube and now we have TVs big enough to actually see what is going on! After hours of playing, I realized how much I’ve missed this style of a co-op game. I've played Diablo III on the PC with friends, and countless other co-op games over the internet or even in person but there is a special feeling evoked when everyone is working together in such close quarters.

Diablo III for consoles is still Diablo III. There are the same five classes, same abilities, same glyphs, hell, even the same number of ability shortcuts. It has the same awkward story and great boss fights, but it just fits better on a console. Diablo III is simplistic, you don’t have to worry about where you spend your stat points and your skills unlock as level without any input from the player. All you have to worry about is slaying the next horde of demon-beasties.

On the PC, this can be annoying, but on the console it gets you and your friends right into the action with few interruptions. If you want to make the game slightly less simple, make sure to turn on “Advanced Tooltips” and “Elective Mode”, this gives you significantly more control over your character.

Gameplay interruptions are my biggest complaint with the console version of the game. If you are playing with multiple people, when one enter his inventory or checks his skills, it takes up the entire screen and leaves the rest of the players to twiddle their thumbs or eat snacks. This can slow down gameplay since every player wants to check their new skills when they level up and occasionally check their vast hordes of equipment.

Luckily, the developers, Blizzard, expected this issue and created a new quick equip system to counter it. Players can now cycle through the last few items they've looted and equip them based on a quick preview of the Damage, Defense and Health changes the item would bestow. This helps alleviate some of the down time. When you pick up a new weapon, it gives you the damage difference and if you are satisfied (with lots of little green triangles) you can swap it out and keep fighting. Unfortunately, items in Diablo III are far more complicated than merely Damage, Defense and Health. Tons of magic item enhancements aren't factored in at all, like Life on Hit and Magic Find, so players will still want to check their full inventory occasionally.

This is a small consequence for the  vast entertainment value of local co-op. With everyone in the same room and potentially on the same TV (but they don’t have to be since you can LAN consoles together) it allows for far better cooperation and interaction between players. And that makes it so much fun. Playing with four can get pretty confusing at times. There is so much going on the screen at the same time I found myself losing my Barbarian in the chaos, but that was only during the craziest fights and I never found it annoying or unbearable.

The gameplay is similar to what you see on the PC version. Large boss fights, massive battles, loads of death. The usual ARPG formula. One new addition is a slew of new difficulty modes. Normally there is one difficulty, and once you finish the first play-through you unlock a harder difficulty to play through that same campaign. You advance from Normal to Nightmare then Hell and Inferno.

This system stands in the Console version with the addition of Easy, Normal, Hard, and Master I - V modes. These settings adjust the relative difficulty for whatever mode you are in. For example, you can be in Normal or Nightmare play-throughs, but them pick Master I since you are confident in your demon slaying ability and it will be significantly more difficult. I love these new options. It allowed my friend and me, both Diablo III veterans, to play through the Normal campaign and actually be pushed and challenged enough to keep it interesting, but when I sat down with a group that has never touched it before we could play it normally and still have fun.

The console controls work surprisingly well, after you get used to them. The auto-aiming system is relatively intelligent so you are usually attacking the person who you should be, but when things get crazy you usually just kill the thing closest to you. If you have ever played a Diablo game before, or any fast paced ARPG, you realize that this isn't that big of an issue except in the instances you want to kill a boss or summoner first. Then you might have to wrestle with the auto-aim a bit.

On the controller, specifically the PS3 controller, every button on the right side of the gamepad are your six active moves. You press the button, enemies die. Simple. Diablo III has a new  dodge roll function which you control with the right stick. This gives the players some of the mobility lost by removing the accuracy of a mouse and keyboard. During my time playing, the two main uses I found for it was to either dodge boss moves or to move backwards while still firing forwards. For characters like the Wizard and Demon Hunter, this becomes an invaluable asset. All said, character control on a console feels natural. It doesn't feel like a port at all, and that is a huge compliment.

Unlike character control, menu navigation takes a little more getting used to. You can only see one screen at a time, and learning the correct button combinations to quickly compare a bunch of equipment takes a while to memorize. Considering the lack of accuracy, multiple windows and hotkeys, item and skill management is slower with a controller compared to a mouse and keyboard, but this is to be expected and the system in place works well enough after some practice.

The visuals of the game are pretty good considering how many models can be displayed on screen at the same time. In some of the harrier fights you can have fifty monsters plus your four player characters all running around and fighting and in the midst of the madness, the frame rates remain solid which is an achievement. Close up shots of the character models isn’t great, but considering the game is only running in 720p max on a much larger screen than most computer monitors, it makes the transition just fine.

A console release of Diablo III was surprising to me, but after playing it, it makes perfect sense. The gameplay, advancement and controls all transfer natively onto the console. If I was playing by myself, I would be torn between the PC and consoles versions. They are so very similar each with their own perks, but the second anyone else wants to play, console co-op it is. Diablo III for consoles is just so much fun it is hard to describe. It is a gaming experience like something I haven’t had for a long time, and I look forward to being jammed on my couch with my buddies for hours on end.

Final Verdict: 8.5/10

Latino Review recently got the "scoop" on a female casting for Batman vs. Superman. According to editor El Mayimbe...

They’re looking for someone in their late 20s and are open to all ethnicity...They’re not only looking for a good actress (like duh), but they’re being very specific and looking for an actress who is both tall and possesses physicality.

So what could this mean? Possible love interest for Ben Affleck's Batman? Mayimbe seems to think so. Seeing as the actor is 6'4" it would make sense. A longshot guess would be Wonder Woman, but I highly doubt that one. My guess? I think it would be more likely that the character they are casting for is Huntress! The open ethnicity and height seem to play perfectly into the part, as well as the fact that she is from Gotham. It all fits together much better than Wonder Woman. Agree?

Trailer for YOUNG DETECTIVE DEE: RISE OF THE SEA DRAGON Fantasy Martial Arts Film

Here's the trailer for a new fantasy martial arts film, Young Detective Dee: Rise of the Sea Dragon. This is a prequel to the awesome 2010 film, Detective Dee: The Mystery of the Phantom Flame. The movie looks like it's going to be just as entertaining. The CGI may be a little off, but it still looks like a beautifully shot, imaginative film. As a fan of the first movie, I'm really excited about this prequel!

Via: Bleeding Cool

The young Dee Renjie arrives in the Imperial Capital, intent to become an officer of the law. Empress Wu, who is at the start of her reign, has sent the fiery-haired Detective Yuchi to investigate a sea monster that stalks the city at night. By chance, both Dee and Yuchi fight off the creature when it attacks a ceremonial procession carrying the beautiful courtesan Yin to be sacrificed at a temple to appease the Gods. Suspicious of the stranger, Yuchi has Dee imprisoned. Dee escapes with the help of visiting doctor Shatuo and together they discover that the upper reaches of society, including the Emperor himself, are addicted to a poisonous tea produced by Yuan's famous teahouse. Yuan, who was romantically attached to Yin, has been missing for months. Dee shadows the courtesan, who is under Yuchun's protection, until the sea monster reappears. Just as the two men are about to kill it, Yin reveals that the monster is her lover, Yuan. Yuan has been poisoned by a foreign Prince whose kingdom was overthrown by the Emperor. As the Prince's army readies itself on a nearby island to attack the capital, a real sea dragon rises from the deep.

Young Detective Dee: Rise Of The Sea Dragon is set to be released in China on the September 28th. There's no word yet on whether it will get a U.S. release date. The first one did, so hopefully the sequel will as well.

Voodoo Witch Poster for AMERICAN HORROR STORY: COVEN

FX has released this poster for their upcoming series American Horror Story: Coven featuring three voodoo witches with a mouthful of snake. I can't wait to see what exactly is in store for us this upcoming season! I'm sure it's going to be fantastically creepy.

Coven features a great cast of actors that include Jessica Lange, Kathy Bates, Angela Bassett, Sarah Paulson, Frances Conroy, Gabourey Sidibe, Denis O'Hare, Patti LuPone, Evans Peters, Taissa Farmiga, Lily Rabe, and Emma Roberts.

Coven tells the secret history of witches and witchcraft in America. Over 300 years have passed since the turbulent days of the Salem witch trials and those who managed to escape are now facing extinction. Mysterious attacks have been escalating against their kind and young girls are being sent away to a special school in New Orleans to learn how to protect themselves. Wrapped up in the turmoil is new arrival, Zoe (Farmiga), who is harboring a terrifying secret of her own. Alarmed by the recent aggression, Fiona (Lange), the long-absent Supreme, sweeps back into town, determined to protect the Coven and hell-bent on decimating anyone who gets in her way.

The series is set to return on October 9th!

H.P. Lovecraft's Original Sketch and Notes for MOUNTAINS OF MADNESS

If you're a fan of H.P. Lovecraft's work, specifically of his story At the Mountains of Madness, you're going to love this this photo of the original notes and sketch he did, showing the beasts from the story including descriptions. As you can see, the struggling writer used an envelope to help him in his efforts to shape his story. This gives us an idea of what exactly Lovecraft envisioned for his monsters.

The story was written in 1931 and was published in the pulp magazine Astounding Stories in 1936. The image above comes from Slate, which points out the following,

The sketch on the right side of this page of notes, with its annotations (“body dark grey”; “all appendages not in use customarily folded down to body”; “leathery or rubbery”) represents Lovecraft working out the specifics of an Elder Thing’s anatomy. As Lovecraft’s narrator was a scientist, the description of the Things in the novella is dense and layered; here we can see the beginnings of that detail.

The story is written in first-person perspective by the geologist William Dyer, a professor from Miskatonic University. He writes to disclose closely kept secrets in the hope that he can deter a planned and much publicized scientific expedition to Antarctica. On a previous expedition there, a party of scholars from Miskatonic University, led by Dyer, discovered fantastic and horrific ruins and a dangerous secret beyond a range of mountains taller than the Himalayas. There he discovers that ancient beings lurk below the surface of the world, several species of forgotten, intelligent beings, including the “Elder Things.”

Here's a piece of concept art that has hit the internet featuring Ben Affleck as Batman. The design comes from comic book artist Steve Scott who worked with Christopher Nolan on The Dark Knight comic book. I seriously doubt this is the design or look they are going for in the movie--this is just his vision of what could be. I don't really like it anyway. I do however like the note at the bottom that says, "Ben wants no bat nipples." I bet that's in his contract.

New Trailer for Keanu Reeves' Other Martial Arts Film, MAN OF TAI CHI

Keanu Reeves is all about the martial arts films these days! He's got 47 Ronin coming out, which looks awesome, and then there's this Man of Tai Chi, which also looks pretty cool. Reeves not only starred in this movie, but he directed it too. It kind of has a Mortal Kombat vibe to it, especially at the end when Reeves yells out, "Finish Him!"

Set in modern Beijing, the film follows the spiritual journey of a young martial artist (played by Tiger Chen) whose unparalleled Tai Chi skills land him in a highly lucrative underworld fight club. As the fights intensify, so does his will to survive.

The film incorporates an innovative camera technology that helped capture the 18 fight sequences, which take up 40-minutes of the film. They used Bot & Dolly's "Iris," which is the world's most advanced robotic motion control camera system in order to capture the action up close and personal with camera moves only possible before in video games and other CG environments.

Then the fight sequences in the movie were directed by renowned action choreographer Yuen Woo Ping (the Matrix Trilogy, Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon). So we know those are going to be amazing. Check out whats in store for us in the trailer below!
