DOWNTON ABBEY Season 4 Trailer

0
0

Even if it's not geeky it's still a fascinating TV.

There are a lot of hugs, kisses, dancing, smiling, fighting, frowns, drinking tea, and scowls in this first promo trailer for the fourth season of Downton Abbey. The series is set to premiere on PBS on January 5th!

If you haven't watched this series, even if it doesn't look interesting to you, I think you should give it a shot. It's incredibly well-scripted, it has a very talented cast, and it's got great characters.

Trailer for the Raunchy Road Trip Comedy ASS BACKWARDS

0
0

We got a new trailer for the raunchy indie road trip comedy Ass Backwards, which premiered earlier this year at Sundance. Eli had a chance to watch the film and compared it to Dumb & Dumber saying...

"Like Harry and Lloyd, Kate and Chloe's combined cluelessness leads them on amazing misadventures. But the characters in Dumb & Dumber had a more endearing quality to them that the girls in Ass Backwards lack. Kate and Chloe's misperception of reality and their unflinching support of each other is more due to their enabled egos rather than from their innocence or ignorance. This makes them hard to like sometimes. Even though I didn't absolutely love the characters, there are so many absurd scenes that you just can't help but laugh at, and director Chris Nelson takes a couple of risky ideas that actually pay off really well. Overall it's a solid comedy, and yet another movie that shows that women are just as capable as men at bringing down the house with laughter."
You can read the full review of the film here, and below you'll find the synopsis:

Kate (June Diane Raphael) and Chloe (Casey Wilson) are two childhood best friends who met when they placed dead last in their hometown beauty pageant. Now they are all grown up and living in New York City, where Chloe works as a “girl in a box” at a nightclub and Kate is a CEO….of her own one-woman egg donor “corporation”. Lost in delusion, they believe they are living large until an invitation to their hometown pageant arrives and their past comes back to haunt them. Join these two loveable losers as they take an ass backwards journey home to reclaim their crown, stopping off at a women’s separatist commune, an amateur strip club competition, and meeting their favorite reality TV star along the way.

The movie is set to be released on VOD on September 30th and in theaters on November 8th. Check out the trailer and let us know if this is a film you think you'll be watching!

More Awkward Geek Confessions: The Making of a Geek

Art by Benoît Dromby

To be a nerd or geek is quickly becoming mainstream thanks to Hulu and Netflix making binge watching a socially acceptable pastime. The social structure is changing to honor those with detailed knowledge of the minutiae of shows and movies from the '70s, '80s, and beyond. No longer are geeks just those who are odd or non-mainstream. They have moved from the enthusiast and hobbyists to the Warlock level, Jedi Masters of knowledge when it comes to the minutiae of their chosen universes. No longer are they just the people who got picked on in high school who the bullies end up working for. The geeks have grown up and taken over not just the computer world but also the movie industry, with folks like Peter Jackson, J .J . Abrams, and Joss Whedon creating homages to the multiverse of geekdom. Technology has facilitated the mainstreaming of geek and nerd culture to the point that hipsters now wear suspenders and "nerd" glasses proudly as a fashion statement.

It's a great time to be alive. The "age of the geek" is here. Let the autodidacts and the enthusiastic followers assemble. As a nerd my intellectual interests include Shakespeare, teaching writing, and neuroscience. As a geek I am passionate about Star Wars, Doctor Who, the Marvelverse, the DCverse, steampunk, the Muppets, and fairy-tales. How did I get this way? Well, it is kind of a long story. It is awkward.

Confession: When I was ten I got really sick. A virus attacked my liver. I was unable to attend school, and for some time I was unable to leave my bed. I had horrible insomnia. Days were filled with never ending exhaustion: tiredness that pooled in the contour of my jawline, then into my neck to be cradled in the hollowed space above my clavicle. There was no demarcation between day and night; I was always in my bed. One month turned into two. Two months turned into eight. A year. Two years. Then three.

One of the ways to deal with the loneliness and isolation was to lose myself in a book, a movie, a TV show. For small moments I was no longer sick and could live an avatar life in a story of my choosing. I consumed books at an alarming rate. I read things that most eleven year olds had never heard of:  Walden, The Journals of Ralph Waldo Emerson, Jane Eyre, Pride and Prejudice, Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance, To Kill a Mockingbird, Dandelion Wine, Around the World in 80 Days, Journey to the Center of the Earth,  Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, Wizard's First Rule, The Dragonriders of Pern, The Star Wars extended Universe  books, the poems of TS Eliot and Walt Whitman. Just to name a few. Then there was Batman, The X-Men, The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen. I read all of my parents' old college textbooks. I read  Hamlet  for the first time and then moved on to what my brother was reading two years ahead of me in school.

I began to write myself into movie plots and book plots, peopling the night with friends and teachers. Especially Star Wars. Luke Skywalker and Jo March became my constant companions. The sheer power of their written characters inhabited my room and kept me company. I also watched a lot of movies, documentaries, TV shows, and read magazines.

Malcom Gladwell, in his amazing book Outliers, says that be a genius at something you have to spend at least 10,000 hours at it. My brother and I figured it out—I racked up about 20,000 hours of media immersion. I’m not saying I’m a genius—but I am definitely a geek. I began listening to books on tape and that was a whole new ball game. I listened to everything: all of the extended Star Wars universe, Star Trek fanfic, Twilight Zone collections, nonfiction books, poetry, and histories. God bless late night PBS.  Months of insomnia introduced me to Doctor Who, Red Dwarf, Poirot, and Sherlock Holmes.

By the time I got better and made it to high school I was a rather peculiar kid. Awkward and disconnected, yellowed from liver infection, and puffy from water weight, I didn’t really fit in. I still kept up my habit of bingeing on books. I realized I knew a lot more about pop-culture than a lot of the adults I was around. I knew more about music from the '60s, '70s, and '80s than my parents and aunts and uncles. I would talk to friends at lunch and they would stare at me as if I were speaking another language.  That was the first time I was called a geek, a nerd, a weirdo. While most of my classmates were caught up in Dawson’s Creek, I was interested in The Beatles, classic sci-fi, and crazy '80s fantasy movies like Labyrinth and The Last Star Fighter.

Sure, I didn't go to junior high at all. Most people would agree that junior high is worth missing. And so I affirm that though the path is long and winding, and less traveled by—“all who wander are not lost,” and "it has made all the difference." I have come to know that there are others out there like me.  A band of misfits, rebels even, who know a lot of stuff about almost everything. Just as Kermit the Frog sang about his Rainbow Connection with the lovers and the dreamers—I too have found my people—the nerds, the geeks, and the dweebs. We are a proud and resilient race--wearing names of scorn as proud badges of the creative children who have survived into adulthood.

8 BIT - Action-Packed Video Game Inspired Animated Short

This short film 8-Bit is a couple of years old, but I came across it recently and thought I'd share it with you just in case you haven't seen it yet either. It's actually a really fun action-packed animated short. It follows the adventures of an 8-Bit hero in a high def world trying to take down the big bad boss man. I assume the reason why the main character is in his underwear with bloodshot eyes is because he represents the gamer playing the game.

The short was directed by Valere Amirault, Jean Delaunay, Sarah Laufer, and Benjamin Matterne. Enjoy!

Tom Hiddleston Talks Loki in THOR: THE DARK WORLD and Beyond

0
0

Tom Hiddleston has quickly risen to the top as a fan favorite for his portrayal of Loki in the the Marvel cinematic universe. The guy is amazing in the role, and it's going to be so cool to see what's in store for the character in Thor: The Dark World and beyond. In a recent interview with MTV the actor discusses it saying,

"It's a roller coaster, no question. It's full of ups and downs and loop-de-loops and twists and turns. It will take you to places you haven't seen before."

In Thor: The Dark World Loki teams up with his brother Thor to take on Malekith the Accursed, the leader of the Dark Elves. In regard to that aspect of the film, Hiddleston says,

"They have an ancient, ancient grudge against Asgard and against the reign of Odin, and they're back."

The actor goes on to talk about his complicated relationship with Thor, and when asked if Loki will remain on Thor's side, he said,

"Loki has a very complicated relationship with Thor. He is an agent of chaos without equal in the world he inhabits. He knows his true nature. He knows he doesn't belong in the family of Asgard, and he's locked away in the beginning of the film in the deepest, darkest recesses of the dungeon as public enemy number one."

For those of you who have seen the Comic-Con footage for the movie, or you've read about it, then you know that Loki once again betrays his brother. As for what's in store for Loki in the future he says,

"I do feel like there's some unfinished business between Loki and the Hulk. I feel like he didn't get a fair fight. Who knows, you'll have to see what happens in 'The Dark World' to find out where Loki finishes up."

Joss Whedon has already said that Loki will not be a part of Avengers: Age of Ultron, so it will be interesting to see what movie he pops up in next.

Benedict Cumberbatch Rumors for STAR WARS VII Are Blowing My Mind

0
0

We are all excited for the upcoming Star Wars film, and we are all waiting for the wave of casting news to envelop us. Well, it looks like the waves are coming.

The most recent rumor to hit the interwebs is that the one and only Benedict Cumberbatch will be joining the cast of the newest trilogy. Film Chronicles is saying that it is only a matter of time before it is confirmed that Cumberbatch will be in a Galaxy Far, Far Away.

There was a ton of speculation surrounding Cumberbatch’s departure from Guillermo Del Toro’s Crimson Peak due to the fact that no reason was given for the drastic move. Hell, I would drop everything too if I was given a chance to be a part of the Star Wars universe.

This is something that we all should have seen coming. Cumberbatch and Abrams have an already established working relationship, so it seems like it would be a perfect fit. There is no news as to what side Cumberbatch will be aligned with, but does it really matter?

I am a real fan of Cumberbatch; I think the guy should be in everything. If you haven’t had a chance you should really check out his BBC show Sherlock. The man is a fantastic actor; he's received critical acclaim both on screen and on the stage. Give him 10 minutes and a little dialogue and he is sure to hook you with his character work. Don’t believe me? Check this short called Inseparable and you will know that I am right.

If he is cast in the film it will complete the Quadfecta of Geekdom (yeah, I went there) that is Benedict Cumberbatch’s film career. Sherlock Holmes, The Hobbit, Star Trek, and now Star Wars. The awesomeness just might be too much to handle! I hate that I have to remind myself that this is just a rumor for now.

Until Next Time… Billy Out!

Animation Master Hayao Miyazaki Retires from Feature Filmmaking

It was announced over the weekend by Studio Ghibli president Hoshino Koji that the master of animation Hayao Miyazaki has retired from feature filmmaking. The announcement came from the Venice Film Festival where his final film The Wind Rises screened.

It's sad that we will no longer see any film from this amazing artist, but his legacy will live on through the amazing films that he's made over the years. Some of those film include Castle in the Sky, My Neighbor Totoro, Porco Rosso, Princess Mononoke, Spirited Away, Howl's Moving Castle, Ponyo, and more.

I grew up watching this mans work, and if he wants to retire to enjoy the rest of his life... awesome! He's definitely earned it.

More details about his retirement will be announced at a dedicated press conference in Japan later this week.

What is your favorite film from Miyazaki?

Incredibly Cool Original Sci-Fi Character Designs

Check out this amazingly cool set of sci-fi style character designs created by CGHUB artist fightPUNCH. The characters are loaded with all kinds of mechanical robotic details. There's no information on what these are for, but I imagine they are part of a personal project the artist has been working on. I would love to see a group of cosplayers take these designs and bring them to life, because they would make for some really badass costumes!

IRON MAN 3 Writer on AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON

Concept Art by Adi Granov

Iron Man 3 screenwriter Drew Pearce recently did an interview with SciFiNow in which he talks about what he knows about Joss Whedon's Avengers: Age of Ultron

On the ending of Iron Man 3

"We take his arc reactor out, but I think we also make a pretty definite statement that he is Iron Man. And although Joss isn't part of the process as such, he saw all the cuts of the movie, so I've got to assume he knows exactly what he wants to do with Tony in [The Avengers: Age of Ultron] and how we've left [Tony Stark] is going to help that, not hinder it."

On the big Comic-Con title reveal and the scale of the film:

“Obviously, Age of Ultron suggests that in Avengers 2 there will definitely be some level of, if not giant evil robots, then definitely a robotic or artificial intelligence entity. I may or may not have been excited about it for a year. Not every aspect of Phase Two is planned already, but Joss has been thinking about it for a year and Kevin has been thinking about what Avengers 2 does since the first film. The scale I think they're going to reach for is going to be truly epic, which is incredible when you consider how epic Avengers was. But on a character level the story will actually be smaller, or at least more intimate. It's hard to put a list together of all the things Joss [Whedon] is good at as a writer, but definitely in the top five would be dealing with the shifting dynamics of a large group of characters."

On Whedon's style of creating a family then tearing them apart:

"The core of Avengers will still be our Avengers. There will, of course, be other characters in the mix, but I think what Joss is really good at is creating a family and then pulling them apart, and to that end he's got so much more to do with the family he established in Avengers. So I suspect that the first port of call in that movie will be kicking the shit out of those characters to see how they cope as a group."

On Tony Stark being the creator of Ultron:

"There is a hell of a lot of rumors, though. Ultron may be something that appears in Guardians of the Galaxy, or it might appear in the Thor universe. I've read a lot of stuff online, and I don't think anyone has got close to the real plan yet."

Avengers: Age of Ultron doesn't come out until May 1st, 2015, but I have no doubt it's going to be freakin' amazing!

EXTRA LIFE 2013 - Geektyrant 4 Tykes is Live!

0

Extra Life: A Chance to help kids who through no fault of their own are battling sickness, illness, and things no child should have to face. Extra Life is our chance to come together and show our support for these little ones. Here’s how it works.

You can choose to sponsor our Extra Life team, codenamed GeekTyrant 4 Tykes (awesome name right?), by donating $1 or $100, the amount makes no difference, or you can just spread the word for us to anyone you know. The money goes to Children’s Miracle Network hospitals all across the US and Canada, and we are supporting the Monroe Caroll Children’s Network Hospital at Vanderbilt. To find out more about who and what we are helping raise money for, you can head to our team's donation page or the Extra Life official site, but the video below sums it up pretty well.

So now that you know why we’re doing this, here's the when. On November 2nd everyone involved will hop online (or sit at their table) to play some games for 24 hours. You don’t have to play for that long, and you can take as many breaks as you want, and you probably should take a break or two, even if its just to reload on Fanta. Once we get closer to the date we’ll be announcing who will be online and what the IDs and gamertags are. We will also be doing some live gamecasting, and more details about that will come closer to the event.

Like I said, if you can’t donate your money that’s fine, just please donate your time by spreading the word. Any difference we can make in a child’s life is supremely worth it, and I'm pretty sure everyone here at Geektyrant and Gametyrant feels the same way. Thanks for hearing me out, and see you on November 2nd!

Charlie Hunnam and Dakota Johnson Cast in FIFTY SHADES OF GREY

0
0

I've never read Fifty Shades of Grey, and it's safe to say that I never will. Hell, I'm not ever sure if I'll ever watch the movie. The hype surrounding this film project has been just as annoying as the Twilight series.

For those of you who are looking forward to seeing the movie, then you may or may not be happy to know that Charlie Hunnam (Sons of Anarchy, Pacific Rim) has landed the lead male role of Christian Grey in the film, and Dakota Johnson has landed the lead female role of Anatasia Steele. She has appeared in films such as The Social Network, 21 Jump Street, and the upcoming Need for Speed adaptation. This is obviously going to be the biggest role of her career, and it seems like one of those roles that could make or break it. Oh yeah, and she's also the daughter of Don Johnson and Melanie Griffith

The film is being directed by Sam Taylor-Johnson, and it's set to be released by Focus Features on August 1st, 2014.

Here's the book description:

When literature student Anastasia Steele goes to interview young entrepreneur Christian Grey, she encounters a man who is beautiful, brilliant, and intimidating. The unworldly, innocent Ana is startled to realize she wants this man and, despite his enigmatic reserve, finds she is desperate to get close to him. Unable to resist Ana’s quiet beauty, wit, and independent spirit, Grey admits he wants her, too—but on his own terms.

Shocked yet thrilled by Grey’s singular erotic tastes, Ana hesitates. For all the trappings of success—his multinational businesses, his vast wealth, his loving family—Grey is a man tormented by demons and consumed by the need to control. When the couple embarks on a daring, passionately physical affair, Ana discovers Christian Grey’s secrets and explores her own dark desires.
Erotic, amusing, and deeply moving, the Fifty Shades Trilogy is a tale that will obsess you, possess you, and stay with you forever.
This book is intended for mature audiences.

Turns out even Krogans are cute when combined with the power of Nintendo's little pink ball of puff, Kirby. Thanks to Reddit user Joystick 355 we now get to see what that looks like. Take a gander at his versions of Tali, Thane, Liara, Wrex, Kaiden, Mordin, Legion, and Garrus, and if you dig them, let him know on his profile page.

Possible TRANSFORMERS 4 Titles

0
0

While we wait on the official title for Transformers 4 to be announced, we have a few different choices to choose from right now. The same brand protection company that registered TransformersDarkoftheMoon.com has registered four new domain names for Michael Bay's next Transformers movie.

The names include... Transformers: Last Stand, Transformers: Apocalypse, and Transformers: Future Cast, and Hasbro has also applied for a number of trademarks, one of which includes Transformers: Age of Extinction.

Since the Dinobots are going to be included in this fourth movie, Age of Extinction seems like the best choice, but we'll just have to wait for the officially announcement. Now, Transformers 4 is the first of a supposed new trilogy of films, so there's a possibility that the studio is also locking down titles for the other movies.

I will say that Future Cast makes the least sense to me as a movie title, Last Stand reminds me too much of X-Men 3, Apocalypse is as cliche as you can get, and Age of Extinction is kind of in line with Age of Ultron

What's your favorite title of the bunch, or what are your title suggestions?

Epic Fan-Made AVENGERS Vs. JUSTICE LEAGUE Trailer

0

It's safe to say that we will never see the Marvel and DC cinematic universes collide on the big screen. But thanks to YouTuber Mr88668866, we have an idea of what that epicness could look like in his fan-made Avengers Vs. Justice League trailer. He uses a ton of footage from several different comic book films and does a great job editing them all together. This turned out really entertaining, so I hope you enjoy it!

Red-Band Trailer for Emily Browning's PLUSH

Emily Browning (Sucker Punch) stars as a sexy rock star in director Catherine Hardwicke's upcoming new film Plush, and the first red-and trailer has been released giving us a good look at the setting and tone of the film. I'm not sure why the trailer is being dubbed "red-band" because there's nothing really anything in it that would make it so. Red-band or not, it looks like it could be a solidly good film.

After losing her band mate and brother to a drug overdose, rising rock star Hayley finds herself in a downward spiral. The new album from her band Plush is received as a critical and commercial disaster. She finds new hope and friendship in Enzo, the replacement guitarist who inspires her to reach new creative heights.
But soon their collaboration crosses the line and Hayley, who is married with two children, retreats from Enzo’s advances. As Hayley slowly discovers Enzo’s dark and troubled history, she realizes she may have let a madman into her home and that her mistake may cost the lives of the people closest to her.

The movie will be released on September 13th. Check out the trailer!

Details on Benedict Cumberbatch's STAR WARS VII Role

0
0

Yesterday a big glorious rumor hit the net that Benedict Cumberbatch was going to be in J.J. Abrams' Star Wars: Episode VII. Apparently a lot of people of been sitting on this rumor for a while. Now that the cat is out of the bag, we have a few details on what role he will have in the film, thanks to Badass Digest.

According to the site, the actor is up for the role of a villain in the story, a Sith villain. It's supposedly a major role that will continue throughout the whole new trilogy! As suspected, this is the reason the actor dropped out of Guillermo del Toro's Crimson Peak

The casting obviously isn't set in stone until an official announcement is made. There are representatives denying this story all over the place, but reps will deny and deny and deny until it's true. The site reminds us all of the times Abrams and his reps were denying up and down that Khan was the villain in Star Trek... look how that turned out.

Benedict is definitely in the running for this role in the film, and I really hope he ends up doing it, because as you know, he would make a hell of a badass Sith lord!

Psychedelic Teaser for Scarlett Johansson's UNDER THE SKIN

Via: TheFilmStage

Scarlet Johansson plays an alien in this sci-fi erotic thriller called Under the Skin. She is sent to earth to seduce and abduct human males. Below, you'll find the first mesmerizingly psychedelic teaser trailer that is packed with a lot of dark clips. The film recently screened at the Venice Film Festival, and it seems to be getting solidly good reviews. Here's the synopsis:

In search of loners, Laura (Scarlett Johansson) drives around the exquisitely moody landscapes of the Scottish highlands. She’s an alien, sent from afar and equipped with enough human language and awesome seductive power to capture, destroy and presumably send home human males. And then, her curiosity about her human body and an accidental act of pity disrupt her mission: talk about lost in translation! Jonathan Glazer, known for his brilliant music videos and SEXY BEAST, and cowriter Walter Campbell adapt Michael Faber’s acclaimed novel to create a surprisingly layered tale. UNDER THE SKIN begins like an effectively creepy sci-fi horror film, but soon deepens into a lyrical evocation of solitude and estrangement and a mournful lament for ephemeral earthly beauty. The photography by Daniel Landin is richly atmospheric, and Mica Levi’s musical themes provide an ominous depth.

There's no U.S. distribution yet, but it will most likely be released sometime in 2014.
