Mark Ruffalo Joins Ryan Murphy's HBO Film THE NORMAL HEART

Ryan Murphy is set to adapt Larry Kramer's play The Normal Heart for HBO. Julia Roberts, Mark Ruffalo, Alec Baldwin, Jim Parsons, and Matt Bomer will star in the telepic that takes place in New York City during the early-'80s onset of the HIV/AIDS crisis. Roberts will play a paraplegic physician working with some of the earliest patients of the disease.

The project is based on the Tony-winning play and will start production this year, with an aim to air in 2014. HBO programming president Michael Lombardo had this to say in a statement,

We are so proud to be involved with this monumental project. Ryan has assembled an extraordinary cast to bring Larry Kramer’s landmark theatrical achievement to the screen for the first time, and we couldn’t be more thrilled to bring this important film to HBO.”

Sounds like it could make for an interesting project for Murphy who previously directed Roberts in the 2010 adaptation of Eat Pray Love.

THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN Concept Art - Cut New York Chase Scene

Check out this incredibly cool set of concept art created for Marc Webb's The Amazing Spider-Man. The illustrations were done by artist Josh Nizzi, and it shows off a chase scene that takes place in New York City that was cut from the film. It features a fight between Spider-Man and The Lizard on a tour bus that crashes into the Rockefeller Center ice rink. The image directly below shows The Lizard using a chameleon-like quality to blend into a digital billboard, which is a cool concept we never saw in the movie. This is a really cool scene that I'm sure would have looked great on the big screen!

Check out the first two clips from Tommy Wirkola's fun looking horror action film Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters. I know the movie isn't going to be a great film, but it looks like it will be a fun ride. The first clip features Hansel (Jeremy Renner) warning his companions not to "eat the candy" at the legendary house where he was almost eaten by a witch. The second clip Gretel (Gemma Arterton) coming face to face with the story's villain played by Famke Jansen

Synopsis:

Catching up with Hansel (Jeremy Renner) and Gretel (Gemma Arterton), fifteen years after the traumatic incident involving a gingerbread house, the siblings have grown into vengeful bounty hunters dedicated to exterminating witches. Over the years, the siblings became expert hunters, famous for their proficiency at tracking and taking down their prey. Although still recovering from their ordeal, their work is relatively easy as for an unknown reason harmful spells and curses do not work well against them.

The Mayor of Augsburg recruits them to rid the town and nearby forests of an evil sorceress (Famke Janssen) who is planning to sacrifice many local children at the witches' gathering during the upcoming 'Blood Moon' night in two days time. To make things worse, the duo also has to deal with the brutal Sheriff Berringer (Peter Stormare) who has taken power in Augsburg and conducts a very indiscriminate witch-hunt of his own.

The movie hits theaters on January 25th, check out the clips and hit us up with your thoughts!

Ailing Star Trek Fan Who Got To See INTO DARKNESS Passes Away

Daniel Craft, the terminally ill Star Trek fan that J.J. Abrams screened a rough cut of Star Trek Into Darkness for last week passed away on Friday night.

The news was reported by New York’s Subway Cinema on its Facebook page explaining that it was from complications of his cancer. He was 42 years old, and a longtime supporter of Subway Cinema and the New York Asian Film Festival.

Abrams learned of Craft’s dying wish via Reddit and several entertainment news outlets. He arranged a screening of the film for him and his wife. I can't begin to explain the sorrow I feel for his family and friends, but our hearts and prayers go out to them.

Check out this trippy dream-like sci-fi short film called 3113. The film was directed by Eric Demeusy, and it follows an android sent on a mission to rescue an endangered species, but he unexpectedly crash lands on alien planet along the way. It's a really cool short that kind of has a classic old-school video game type feel to it.

The story of an Android named 3113 who is sent on a mission to rescue the last member of an endangered species. Its objective is suddenly interrupted when a meteor strikes its spaceship forcing it to crash land on an unknown planet. 3113 must now push beyond its mechanical anatomy to find a way out while at the same time decipher the strange occurrences which seem to guide the Android on its path.

LEGO MARVEL SUPER HEROES Game Officially Announced!

Warner Bros. has officially announced the LEGO Marvel Super Heroes video game that will be coming to all major consoles and handhelds this autumn.

It's a little weird to see Warner Bros. who mostly deals with DC comics properties play around with the Marvel universe. Up until this point the LEGO games have only featured DC characters, and movies like Harry Potter. It makes me wonder if we'll see the DC and Marvel world cross paths at some point in the LEGO universe.

The game will "complement" the LEGO Marvel Super Heroes toy sets, which combines characters and vehicles from the rich Marvel universe. So far they have released eight sets, featuring Iron Man, Spider-Man, and the X-Men.

The game will feature an original storyline in which Nick Fury will enlist the help of Iron man, the Hulk, Thor, Spider-Man, Wolverine, Deadpool, and several other heroes from Marvel Universe to save Earth from Loki and Galactus, the Devourer of Worlds. There will be over 100 Marvel characters that can be unlocked.

I don't really play the LEGO games, but I hear they're a lot of fun. I'm sure fans of the games and the Marvel Universe will have some fun with this game. Here's the full press release with more details....

Marvel super heroes are assembling for an action-packed, brick-smashing good time! Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment, TT Games, The LEGO Group and Marvel Entertainment announced today that "LEGO Marvel Super Heroes"  will be available beginning Fall 2013 for the Xbox 360 video game and entertainment system from Microsoft, PlayStation 3 computer entertainment system, the Wii U system and Windows PC, as well as the Nintendo DS handheld system, Nintendo 3DS handheld system and PlayStation Vita handheld entertainment system. "LEGO Marvel Super Heroes" is the first instalment in the highly successful LEGO videogame franchise to feature famous Marvel characters.

"LEGO Marvel Super Heroes" complements the LEGO Marvel Super Heroes construction toy collection, which brings the characters, vehicles and action of Marvel’s renowned universe to the world of LEGO build-and-play adventure. There are currently eight iconic scenes from the X-Men, Iron Man and Spider-Man franchises available and more construction sets tied to the new "Iron Man 3" feature film will launch later this spring.

"LEGO Marvel Super Heroes" offers an original storyline in which Nick Fury calls upon Iron Man, the Hulk, Thor, Spider-Man, Wolverine and other heroes spanning the Marvel Universe to save Earth from such threats as the vengeance of Loki and the hunger of Galactus, Devourer of the Worlds.  LEGO and Marvel fans will enjoy classic LEGO videogame adventure and humor, while playing as their favorite Marvel characters.

“We’re very excited to bring a myriad of classic Marvel characters to life in LEGO form for some fun, family-friendly gameplay in 'LEGO Marvel Super Heroes,'” said Tom Stone, Managing Director, TT Games Publishing. “Players will brave the ultimate mission to save the world as they explore famous landmarks in LEGO New York and take the adventure beyond Earth to iconic locations in the Marvel Universe.”

“Fans of both LEGO and Marvel have wanted this game for years, and we’re addressing that demand with more Marvel Universe characters than ever in a console game,” said TQ Jefferson, Vice President, Games Production, Marvel Entertainment.  “If you’re a fan of Spider-Man, the Avengers, Fantastic Four, X-Men, Guardians of the Galaxy or scores of other Marvel characters, this is the game for you.”

In "LEGO Marvel Super Heroes," players will unlock more than 100 characters from across the Marvel Universe, including fan favorites like Spider-Man, Iron Man, Wolverine, Captain America, the Hulk, Thor, Black Widow, Hawkeye, Deadpool, Loki and Galactus! The game will pack in a plethora of super-cool character abilities, combat-like action sequences, epic battle scenes, puzzle-solving and a unique story told with playful LEGO humor.

CALVIN & HOBBES Spaceman Spiff Tribute Video

Here's a fun little Calvin & Hobbes tribute video that centers on one of Calvin's alter egos, Spaceman Spiff. The character is a parody of Flash Gordon, and is an "interplanetary explorer extraordinaire," who explores the outermost reaches of the universe in a red flying saucer. He also had some really great phrases such as, "Poised precariously over a percolating pit of putrid pasta."

I grew up reading Calvin & Hobbes, it was just such a fun comic strip. If you're a fan as well, I'm sure you'll enjoy this flash animated tribute to Spaceman Spiff. It was created by Camilo Fernandez.

Michael Bay Casts Jack Reynor In TRANSFORMERS 4

Michael Bay has announced on his website that he's cast a young actor by the name of Jack Reynor to star along side Mark Wahlberg in Transformers 4. Here's what he said about the casting on his blog, and he also clears up a few things...

I just hired a great new actor for Transformers 4 to star against Mark Wahlberg. Jack Reynor, he is an Irish kid that came to America with 30 bucks in his pocket. Pretty ballsy. Seriously who does that? Anyway I spotted him in a great little Irish movie WHAT RICHARD DID. This kid is the real deal.

Transformers 4, is not a reboot. That word has been floating around on the net.

This movie takes place exactly 4 years after the war in Chicago. The story makes a very natural transition, and reason as to why we have a whole new cast. This Transformers will feel very different then the last three. We are embarking on a new trilogy.

I've never heard of the kid, but Bay seems to really like him! It looks like the director is going to stick around for at least three more Transformers films. I really hope the new films feel very different in every aspect. I'm looking for a fresh new take on the franchise, and hopefully Bay can give us that. Do you think he will? Or do you think it's going to be the same movies with different characters?

During the Super Bowl on February 3rd, Paramount is going to premiere a new TV Spot for J.J. Abrams' Star Trek: Into Darkness that is going to include some new footage from the film. The spot will also be integrated with a cool sounding new app for the film that was just announced. It was created by Gimbal, and it has several cool features, one of which is the ability to unlock exclusive content while watching the spot during the big game! They say that this is one of the most unique and interactive apps ever created for a movie. You can read all about it in the press release below!

Paramount Pictures, a division of Viacom Inc., and Qualcomm Incorporated (NASDAQ: QCOM), through its subsidiary Qualcomm Labs, Inc., today announced that Gimbal context awareness technologies will be used to deliver exclusive content and advanced real world game experiences for the “STAR TREK INTO DARKNESS” application based on the upcoming movie from J.J. James Mangold Talks About THE WOLVERINE

$

I'm looking forward to seeing James Mangold's The Wolverine. As you know, it's based on a classic and badass storyline, and I hope that's what we get when it hits the big screen. In a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly the director talks about the film confirming that it will take place after the events in X-Men: The Last Stand, and explains that Logan is no longer a part of a superhero team. There's some interesting questions that are answered in this interview, like how much of the Chris Claremont and Frank Miller comic was used in the film...

A lot of that story and a lot of beats from that saga are in there — and a lot of characters. Without being religious about it, I think it’s a very admiring adaptation. Obviously when you’re adapting anything you make some changes. But all the characters are there – Yukio, Viper, Mariko, Shingen, and Logan obviously. The whole cast of characters that exist in that world exists in our film.

He goes on to explain what brings Logan to Japan, and the film he used as inspiration.

An old friendship. What brings him there is an old ally in Japan. We find Logan in a moment of tremendous disillusionment. We find him estranged. One of the models I used working on the film was The Outlaw Josey Wales. You find Logan and his love is gone, his mentors are gone, many of his friends are gone, his own sense of purpose – what am I doing, why do I bother – and his exhaustion is high. He has lived a long time, and he’s tired. He’s tired of the pain.

So there you go, for those of you who want to know what this story is going to be, read the comic. He goes on to explain the decison to set the film after The Last Stand,

It’s set after X-Men 3, but I wouldn’t call it a sequel to X-Men 3. You have a choice the second you enter a world like this with a huge amount of comic books, backstories, three movies, a Wolverine origins movie … You have decide where you’re going to exist in relation to all these other things, particularly if you’re working with an actor who actually played the character in other films.

Mangold goes on to discuss Logan's immortality, and how it's portrayed in the film,

I felt it was really important to find Logan at a moment where he was stripped clean of his duties to the X-Men, his other allegiances, and even stripped clean of his own sense of purpose. I was fascinated with the idea of portraying Logan as a ronin – the definition of which is a samurai without a master, without a purpose. Kind of a soldier who is cut loose. War is over. What does he do? What does he face? What does he believe anymore? Who are his friends? What is his reason for being here anymore? I think those questions are especially interesting when you’re dealing with a character who is essentially immortal.

Mangold then explains the importance of the baggage that Logan carries with him from the previous film saying,

It was only to my advantage to set it after the X-Men films because the X-Men had effectively ended at that point. A lot of the key characters had died. There was a sense if I’m locating this film not five minutes after the other movie, but a period of time after that last X-Men movie, I can find a Logan who is living separate from the world. He is no longer a member of some superhero team.

The thing Hugh and I try to explore in this one is the most interesting aspect of the character — the never-ending nature of his life. His immortality. The fact he can heal from anything. That is a kind of dream for us mere mortals. But it’s interesting to explore what a curse that is. Isaac Asimov did in The Bicentennial Man, a very different story, but a great story about a robot with a soul who has to watch as everyone he loves, including the woman he loves, grows up and dies – and he must go on for infinity missing her.

Finally the director talks about the most liberating thing for him about making the movie,

I felt the most liberating thing about coming after the other movies is you don’t have to hand it off or end it in some way that meets up with a previous film. For creative freedom, I didn’t want to have to, essentially, land this film in Wichita because that’s where the next one takes off from. It helped me to be really free, and in some ways be more loyal to Claremont/Miller, without having to be tied to other films.

This is just a little bit of the interview make sure to head on over to EW to read the rest of it. What do you think about what Mangold had to say about the film? Did it make you anymore excited about seeing the film?

The movie also stars Will Yun Lee, Khodchenkova, Hiroyuki Sanada, Hal Yamanouchi, Tao Okamoto, Rila Fukushima, and Brian Tee. It's set to hit theaters on July 26th, 2013.

Here's the synopsis for the film:

Based on the celebrated comic book arc, this epic action-adventure takes Wolverine, the most iconic character of the X-Men universe, to modern day Japan. Out of his depth in an unknown world he faces his ultimate nemesis in a life-or-death battle that will leave him forever changed. Vulnerable for the first time and pushed to his physical and emotional limits, he confronts not only lethal samurai steel but also his inner struggle against his own immortality, emerging more powerful than we have ever seen him before.

Spielberg Reveals Daniel Day-Lewis' LINCOLN Rejection Letter

$

Director Steven Spielberg had been trying to get Daniel Day-Lewis to play Abraham Lincoln for years before the actor finally agreed to do it. It's crazy that he kept turning Spielberg down, yet the director kept chasing him down until he said yes. I honestly don't think Spielberg would have made the movie if Day-Lewis didn't do it. Here's the first reject letter that Spielberg got from the actor...

Dear Steven,

It was a real pleasure just so sit and talk with you. I listened very carefully to what you had to say about this compelling history, and I’ve since read the script and found it in all the detail in which it describe these monumental events and in the compassionate portraits of all the principal characters, both powerful and moving. I can’t account for how at any given moment I feel the need to explore life as opposed to another, but I do know that I can only do this work if I feel almost as if there is no choice; that a subject coincides inexplicably with a very personal need and a very specific moment in time. In this case, as fascinated as I was by Abe, it was the fascination of a grateful spectator who longed to see a story told, rather than that of a participant. That’s how I feel now in spite of myself, and though I can’t be sure that this won’t change, I couldn’t dream of encouraging you to keep it open on a mere possibility. I do hope this makes sense Steven, I’m glad you’re making the film, I wish you the strength for it, and I send both my very best wishes and my sincere gratitude to you for having considered me.

After he got the letter he had an entirely new script written that he sent to Day-Lewis, and the actor sent back a similar reply. He then scrapped that script and had another one written by Tony Kushner (Munich). That ended up being a 500 page script that got whittled down to what we ended up seeing in the movie. Lincoln focused on the 13th Amendment, which was a completely different film than what Spielberg had first proposed to Day-Lewis. It's amazing to me that Spielberg cared so much about what Day-Lewis thought of the script that he basically had it written until he said yes.

I thought Lincoln was a great film and I'll be shocked if Day-Lewis doesn't win an Oscar for Best Actor.

First Trailer For THE LAST EXORCISM Part II

$

Want to know why we are seeing a sequel to The Last Exorcism? Because the first film was made for only $2 million, and it brought in over $67 million at the box office. That's a huge profit! It looks like CBS Films and Studio Canal are playing it safe with The Last Exorcism Part II, and sticking to the exact same formula as the first film, just in a different setting. I guess if you're a hardcore fan of the first movie, you might like the sequel.

Eli Roth produced the film, which was directed by Ed Gass-Donnelly from a screenplay he wrote with Damien Chazelle. Here's the synopsis...

Teenage Nell Sweetzer (Ashley Bell) is found dirty and terrified in the woods having just escaped a demon ritual in which a cult helped her give birth to a demon baby.  Confused and scared, Nell is examined by doctors but she doesn’t remember much about the previous few months except that as a result of everything, her family is now dead.  She is moved into Davreaux – a girls’ halfway house in New Orleans, where she will try to put her life back together with the help of the therapist, Frank Merle.  She even begins to date a boy named Chris and starts a job at a local hotel.  But something doesn’t feel right to Nell.  She is being sought after by the demon who possessed her in the first LAST EXORCISM.  It wants Nell, but in a different way than before…

...but not really. The movie will be released in theaters March 1st, and you can bet your ass I'm going to skip this one, and that's coming from a huge horror movie fan that watches everything.

I love the Star Wars themed jackets that Marc Ecko and his team have been designing, and this Imperial TIE fighter flight jacket is definitely one of the coolest jackets that they've unleashed. I love this design, and I wish I had the money to buy it right now, but I recently got a bullcrap traffic ticket that I have to pay instead, on top of that there's the crazy rise in taxes! Sheesh, I won't be buying any goodies for myself for awhile.

Celebrating the iconic characters and imagery of Star Wars, Marc Ecko Cut & Sew, in partnership with Lucasfilm Ltd., has launched limited edition hoodie and jacket collections inspired by the legendary film series. The collections pay respect to the legacy of Star Wars while re-imagining its innovative designs and style in new, fashionable ways.
