Awesome Must Watch Japanese Trailer for KONG: SKULL ISLAND!

"Kong is God on the island, but the devils live below us."

Warner Bros. has released a Japanese trailer for Legendary Pictures' Kong: Skull Island, and it's pretty damn exciting! It features some cool new footage and perfectly sets the tone of the kind of movie that it's going to be. There are certainly going to be a lot of crazy new creatures to deal with other than Kong and some epic fiery destruction.

The new film follows a team of explorers who venture deep inside the treacherous, primordial island to find the leader's brother and a mythical serum, confronting extraordinary creatures along the way.

The movie has a great cast that includes Tom Hiddleston, Brie Larson, Samuel L. Jackson, and John GoodmanKong: Skull Island was directed by Jordan Vogt-Roberts, and it's set to be released on March 10th, 2017.

The Nerdwriter Analyzes How SHERLOCK Films Thought

I don't know about you, but I thought this past Sunday's episode of BBC's Sherlock, entitled "The Lying Detective," was a huge improvement over the first episode of this season. I'm not a huge fan of the whole "Mary Watson spycraft" angle, so to see that put on the back burner in favor of a story about Sherlock reuniting with John Watson to stop a serial killer (with the always-solid Amanda Abbington still very much in the picture in John's mind) was a glorious change of pace and I think it's exactly what the show needed.

In a new video essay, the Nerdwriter analyzes the singular way this show films the thoughts of its title character. It's a nice breakdown of one particular series of revelations in the episode, and a good look at the inventive and sophisticated storytelling methods utilized by the directors of this show. I'm looking forward to seeing how next week's episode goes, and whether or not it will serve as not only the season finale, but also the final episode of the entire show.

Trailer for Maisie Williams' Netflix Film iBOY Centers on a Boy Who Gains Techno Superpowers

Netflix has another great looking film that they will be releasing called iBoy. The story follows a teen boy, who, through a series of tragic events, gains techno superpowers. How? He gets shot in the head while holding his cell phone and fragments of his cell phone end up in his head. This somehow allows him to manipulate technology, surf the internet in his brain, and get tips on how to fight people while in the heat of action. I know it sounds a little silly, but the movie actually does look really good. This has the potential to be a fun and different kind of superhero film.

Tom is an average teenager whose world is turned on its head when a violent encounter with local thugs leaves fragments of his shattered smartphone embedded in his brain. He wakes from a coma to discover that returning to normal teenage life is impossible because he has developed a strange set of superpowers. With these new powers he sets out to seek revenge on the gang, who also assaulted his best friend Lucy.

The film stars Bill Milner (X-Men: First Class) as the boy, Maisie Williams (Game of Thrones) as his love interest, and Rory Kinnear (Penny Dreadful) as the villain.

iBoy will be available to watch on Netflix on January 27th, 2017.

DEADPOOL Writers Talk Sequel and Claim Vladimir Putin Leaked the Test Footage

While there's a very high probability that four people collectively decided to leak the Deadpool test footage, there's also a small chance Russian President Vladimir Putin was involved! Deadline spoke to the writers about the film's award chances, the sequel, and of course, the infamous leak that got it all rolling. We've all heard the story of "the leak" that finally got footage of Deadpool in front of the public, but writer Paul Wernick thinks he's narrowed down who did it...

"We’ve always wondered who leaked that test footage. There’s really been only four suspects—it’s been myself, Rhett, Ryan [Reynolds], and [director] Tim [Miller], but a new suspect has emerged, and we’re gonna give you the scoop on this. It’s Putin, actually; Vladimir Putin leaked the test footage for Deadpool."

I wouldn't peg Putin as a big Deadpool fan, but then again I'm not sure many people expected the film to be the $735 million dollar success that it was, and yet the writers laugh that a film so successful is viewed an "underdog" in the award season for films...

"How rare is it that a movie that made $783 million is kind of the underdog of the award season? [Laughs] It’s rare that a movie like this, that’s generally considered a popcorn type movie, gets recognized among such serious, great fare. So, it’s both surprising and exciting, and unexpected, and yet, so gratifying"

As far as the update on the sequel, things are looking very positive! The team is still planning on including Cable and shooting sometime this year...

"It’ll be populated with a lot of characters, but it is still Deadpool’s movie, this next one. We’re pushing forward very hard. I think by every account we will shoot it this year, and we’re on our multiple draft now. It’s taken different twists and turns, but it’s really coalescing, and we’re very, very excited. We’re a little nervous, because now we feel like we have to live up to the first movie, but at the same time, we have to have faith, and we have an extreme passion still, and as long as we have passion still, and it’s not a mercenary, venal play, which we don’t think this is, I think we’ll be in good shape."

The only bad news? There's no plan to bring Deadpool into the current fold of X-Men films just yet as far as the writing team knows, but don't rule it out!

Adam Savage Interviews Engineers Who Have Literally Mastered Fighting Fire With Fire

Adam Savage teams up with GE to witness something that was once believed to be impossible. These guys are fighting fire with fire, but not in the way you'd think! These engineers are then sending sound recordings of fire through a tube with enough force to extinguish the fire! Kind of sounds like a technicality to me as the sound waves are essentially forcing air to blow out the candle, but it's still pretty cool to watch nonetheless. Check it out below!

Updated with new photo below:

Thanks to Entertainment Weekly, we have our first photo of Marvel's The Defenders team assembled together. There's also a behind-the-scenes video of the photo shoot that you can watch below that includes interviews with Charlie Cox (Matt Murdock, a.k.a. Daredevil), Krysten Ritter (Jessica Jones), Mike Colter (Luke Cage), and Finn Jones (Danny Rand, a.k.a. Iron Fist).

In an interview with The Defenders showrunner Marco Ramirez, he talked about the characters coming together for this story explaining:

“Every one of them is following their own trail of bread crumbs, trying to unpack a mystery in New York. We wanted them all caught off guard. Once they’re in that room together, it’s kind of like, ‘Oh, s—, who are you?'”

Marvel TV head Jeph Loeb added:

“The Defenders didn’t have a ‘D’ on their belt buckles and a Defenders Tower. We agreed from the very beginning that these folks could at the very end go, ‘I never want to see your face again.'”

I love that. It'd be a shame if they didn't come together again, but I love that attitude. The Defendersis set to arrive sometime in 2017, and they'll face off against none other than Sigourney Weaver as the villain. To read everything we know about the limited series, click here.

LA LA LAND Featurette Focuses on Costumes, Locations, and the Movie's Opening Scene

Lionsgate has released a new featurette for La La Land, the studio's Oscar frontrunner for Best Picture that became the single most awarded film in Golden Globes history this past weekend. If you haven't seen the movie yet, I'd highly recommend it — it's one of my favorites of 2016.

The featurette concentrates on the movie's eye-popping costumes and real life locations, including some behind the scenes footage of when the production shut down a section of a Los Angeles freeway to film its opening musical number. La La Land is one of the most visually distinct movies that came out last year, combining primary colors and art deco production design with a more modern sensibility, and it's cool to hear about the thought processes that went into bringing this magical musical to life. The film is in theaters now, so check it out if you haven't seen it yet!

David Goyer and Justin Rhodes Brought on to Write the Script for GREEN LANTERN CORPS

David Goyer and Justin Rhodes have been brought on to write the script for Green Lantern Corps! According to Deadline, the new film is being described as Lethal Weapon in space and will center around Lanterns Hal Jordan and John Stewart.

To be honest I'm kind of disappointed there was no mention of Guy Gardner in the press release! To leave him out of this film would be a huge snub for fans, so I have to imagine he's in it, wouldn't you?

I guess now that the project is official let's start the dream casting for John Stewart and (presumably) Hal Jordan! I'm also curious as to who you guys think should play Guy Gardner.

It's been more than twenty years since Steven Spielberg's Jurassic Park hit theaters, but its impact is still being felt across Hollywood in a huge way. Putting aside the influence the original film had on today's up-and-coming filmmakers, Jurassic World was a dino-sized hit a couple of years ago and a sequel is headed to the big screen next year. Now Mondo is paying homage to the franchise with two brand new posters and a set of enamel pins that fans should get a kick out of.

First up: "Jurassic Park" from artist Kako.

We have a T-Rex! Kako's take on the iconic T-Rex breakout scene puts us in the perspective of Tim and Lex as the queen of the park stare down on them. With a "nightvision" glow-in-the-dark variant it's important to remember, if you don't move she can't see you.

Then there's "Jurassic World" from artist Dan McCarthy:

And finally, you can check out the pins featuring paddock signs for dinosaurs like the Velociraptor, Brachiosaurus, Tyrannosaurus Rex, Dilophosaurus, and Triceratops.

Monsters From THE GRUDGE and THE RING Do Battle in the American Trailer for SADAKO VS. KAYAKO

I was really hoping they'd remake this film with the American versions, but I'll settle for a U.S. release of the Japanese film! Surely you've seen our coverage of the weird Japanese film which pits the evil girl from The Ring against the evil family from The Grudge? If you haven't, prepare for the treat that is Sadako vs. Kayako!

The film is essentially the Freddy vs. Jason of Japanese horror! So it turns out there is a way to counter that evil videotape from The Ring, and all you have to do is watch it in the same house that The Grudge takes place in! That way both monsters meet and want to kill each other!

It seems like a pretty large logic stretch, and part of me wonders if it'll backfire and end in both monsters attacking the innocent bystanders. Get your first chance to see it via Shudder which is currently offering free trials! If you've never seen the site before, check it out.

STRANGER THINGS Cast and Crew Tease Season 2 and Its Bigger, Darker Stakes

Stranger Things season two is currently in production, and fans are eagerly anticipating the return of their favorite characters. There's been a good amount of talk about the series and what we can expect, but nothing that really offers any details on the plot.

In a recent interview with Vanity Fair, actor Noah Schnapp, who played Will Byers, Winona Ryder’s missing son, continued to tease what we can expect from season two. Will will play a much bigger role in season two, and he confirms that it will start off right where season one ended... with Will vomiting out a slug.

“You’ll be seeing more of me. I’ll be there. In the last episode, I threw up a slug, so season 2 begins with what happens from there. There may have been some effect on him. I may or may not have turned into a monster. You’ll have to watch to find out.”

Director and producer Shawn Levy went on to add that it will have bigger and darker stakes:

“Season 2 is bigger and potentially darker in its stakes. The threat, which in Season 1 was to Will Byers, has grown. That’s all I’m going to say! But, I will say Season 2 has a bigger cast and is definitely loyal to the kind of magical storytelling that we established in the first season. It’s character-based and still about our core group of characters.”

Finn Wolfhard, who plays Will’s friend Mike Wheeler, chimed in with his thoughts saying that the new season will show more personal growth within their group of friends:

“Now that we’ve done a season, we know exactly about our characters. We are very conscious of them and can take them to the next level. I think we’ve grown up a little bit, and our characters have too. They have been through a lot and have used those experiences to help them grow and to be stronger in Season 2.”

I have so many questions that I want answers to, but I'll wait until season two premieres to find out what those answers are. The whole cast that survived the first season is set to return including Ryder and Millie Bobby Brown as Eleven. They will be joined by Goonies star Sean Astin and AliensPaul Reiser.

Stranger Things season two is set to be released in July 2017.

Chewbacca Violently Tears Unkar Plutt's Arm Off in THE FORCE AWAKENS Deleted Scene

An awesome deleted scene has surfaced from J.J. Abrams' Star Wars: The Force Awakens that features Chewbacca ripping the arm off of Unkar Plutt! Not sure why it was deleted because the fans would have loved to see Chewbacca rip someone's arm off in the movie! Star Wars fans live for Chewbacca ripping limbs off of people and aliens! I love the shocked look on Daisy Ridley's face after the Wookie throws the arm across the room. This is one of those deleted scenes that should've stayed in the movie. Check it out!

Charlie Cox Discusses Daredevil Being “A Little Bit Lost” in THE DEFENDERS

$

In a recent interview with EW, Charlie Cox talks about Daredevil's state of mind when we see him in The Defenders. The last time we saw Daredevil was at the end of season two when he held his mask out to Karen Page. That’s a big event that is sure to make some interesting plot element to play with.

When talking about where we will find Daredevil in The Defenders, Cox says:

“Well, it’s been a few months since the end of season 2. I think it’s been quite a challenging few months for him. He took the death of Elektra very badly —I think he feels responsible for that. One of Matt’s big things is trying to protect the people he loves, which is why he keeps his identity hidden, and he’s failed. He’s left holding the dead body of a loved one, and so I think he’s tried to turn a corner.”

He goes on to say:

“It’s almost like quitting an addiction in the hope that it will get easier. He’s perhaps a little bit lost, and the best he can do for now is to not engage in his vigilante activities. When we meet him at the beginning of The Defenders, I’m not sure he’s completely found peace with that idea. I think he’s doing the best with what he can at the time. He finds himself between a rock and a hard place, which is the crux of his issue really from the beginning of season 1. ‘Should I or shouldn’t I?’ What is more beneficial to society?”

Matt Murdock is such a conflicted character, which is why I like him so much. There are a lot of layers to this guy and I love that he’s finally being explored properly with these Marvel Netflix series. One of the main characteristics of the character is his Roman Catholic faith, and Cox goes on to talk about how his alter ego Daredevil could affect his beliefs.

“I don’t think he’s ever going to let that one go. He understands that these things are not black and white, not always about good and evil, but he believes that his intentions are good. He’s always, always going to wonder if he’s committing mortal sin.”

Again, this is just another one of those things that makes Daredevil such an interesting and complicated character! Marvel's The Defenders debuts on Netflix in 2017. To catch up on all of our previous news on The Defenders click here.

New GOTHAM Promo Gives Us Our First Jacked-Up Look at the Resurrected Jerome

A new promo has been released for the midseason premiere of Gotham, and it gives us our first look at the return of Jerome (Cameron Monaghan) after being resurrected from the dead. The guy looks pretty jacked-up, and in a way reminds me more the Frankenstein than The Joker, which is who he might end up becoming.

His look could be inspired by DC's New 52 version of the character in which The Joker allowed Dollmaker to cut off his face. The Joker then wore that cut off decomposing face as a mask that he stapled on his head.

Falcone places a hit on Gordon after learning that he shot Mario. Gordon and Bullock discover a follower of Jerome (Cameron Monaghan), who plans to bring him back to life. Meanwhile, Penguin spirals out of control before the biggest television interview of his Mayoral career, and Bruce and Selina deal with Selina’s mom’s return to Gotham.

Gotham's midseason premiere airs tonight, Monday, January 16th at 8pm.

I'm in the midst of full-on Game of Thrones withdrawals right now, so this video came along at just the right time. Musical duo 2CELLOS performed a stirring medley of music from the show accompanied by the London Symphony Orchestra, and it appears as if they shot this video in Dubrovnik, Croatia, the same location the show uses to portray the fictional city of King's Landing.

If the awesome drone footage and slow start aren't enough for you, jump ahead to the 3:00 mark where things start to get a little crazy with dueling cello solos. The seventh season of Game of Thrones premieres on HBO sometime this summer.

James Cameron Is Making a Documentary Series on the History of Science Fiction

$

0

James Cameron is teaming up with AMC to bring develop a documentary series that focuses on the history and evolution of science fiction. The series is James Cameron's Story of Science Fiction, and it will consist of six one-hour episodes.

Each episode will see Cameron introducing one of the “Big Questions” humanity has grappled with through history, delving into Science Fiction’s past to look at how the genre’s films, TV shows, books, and video games were born, and where the genre, and humanity, might be headed. Throughout, Cameron and his contemporaries debate the merits, meanings, and impacts of the films and novels that influenced them.

I love the idea of this series as it's something that is completely fascinating to me. As a longtime fan of the sci-fi genre, it will be awesome to get some additional historical insight into how it's evolved over the years. Who better to do that than Cameron!? When announcing the series, Cameron said:

“When I was a kid, I basically read any book with a spaceship on the cover and I saw 2001: A Space Odyssey many, many times. The movie inspired me to become a filmmaker. I liked the special effects, but I really loved the ideas and the questions behind them: How will the world end? Will technology destroy us? What does it mean to be human? These are subjects sci-fi has never been afraid to tackle.
“With this series, we are going back to the origins of sci-fi, following the DNA of these ideas back to the source. Without Jules Verne and H.G. Wells there wouldn’t have been Ray Bradbury or Robert A. Heinlein, and without them, there wouldn’t be Lucas, Spielberg, Ridley Scott or me. As a filmmaker who specializes in science fiction, I’m interested in exploring the struggles and the triumphs that brought these incredible stories to life and seeing how art imitates life, as well as how science fiction imitates and sometimes informs science.”

The series is set to debut in 2018 on AMC, and I can't wait to check it out! On a side note, if Cameron keeps taking on side projects like this docu-series to take up his time, he'll never find the start shooting and finish his long-awaited Avatar sequels that he's already been working on for-ev-er.

Here's a Glimpse at the Live-Action NARUTO Musical That Will Tour Japan

Every time I hear that the Japanese are not as crazy about their anime as we think they are a bit of news comes out to dispute that statement! Comicbook is giving us our first look at the upcoming Japanese musical based off the popular manga/anime Naruto. The musical is officially titled Live Spectacle Naruto: The Akatsuki Investigation and will center around events that happened on and beyond the 27th manga in the series.

Check out this teaser trailer and continue on below...

The show is set to run throughout the summer in Japan starting out in Tokyo from May to June and then traveling to Osaka briefly before ending its run back in Tokyo. The show is scheduled to conclude in early August.

I guess just because they're making a musical based off a popular anime it doesn't mean they're crazy about it. After all, we've been running The Lion King on broadway for decades...then again, we are still pretty crazy about Disney movies. Would you be interested in seeing a Naruto musical? Check out some additional character photos of the production below while you think about it.
