Epic Trailer for Russian Alien Invasion Film ATTRACTION

$

Two teasers have been released for Russian alien invasion film Attraction (Притяжение) that slipped past our radar. Today, a full trailer that combines both teasers and adds more footage was released. and it's truly epic. How epic you ask? It's getting an IMAX 3D releases that's how epic. Because the trailer is not dubbed, you will need to turn on YouTube's subtitles by clicking the gear icon and "Subtitles / CC" and selecting English, I recommend doing this after at least one play-through.

Attraction has a huge scale and very great visual and special effects. The design of the alien robot or mechsuit has a very unique look to it. I like how the curves and colors contrast with the stark and boxy environment. I'm not familiar with director Fedor Bondarchuk but apparently he's very famous in Russia. Looking at his filmography I might have to see if any of his films have made the leap stateside.

Attraction does not have a USA release date. It will open in theaters in Russia and China January 26th, 2017. We'll keep our ear to the ground for a USA release date.

Legendary Pictures Has Picked Up the Film and TV Rights to DUNE

Legendary Pictures has just picked up the film and TV rights to Frank Herbert's classic sci-fi novel Dune. A new version of this film has been in and out of development for years, and with Legendary Pictures taking over the rights, it's sure to finally happen.

I've actually really been wanting to see Dune get a new film adaptation! David Lynch's 1984 film was decent enough and has a strong cult following, but the story has the potential to be a much better movie. Hopefully Legendary can bring the right team of talent on board to give fans of the book the best adaptation possible.

Set in the distant future, Dune tells the story of Paul Atreides whose family accepts control of the desert planet Arrakis. As the only producer of a highly valuable resource, control of Arrakis is highly contested among the noble families. After Paul and his family are betrayed, the story explores themes of politics, religion, and man’s relationship to nature as Paul leads a rebellion to restore his family’s control of Arrakis.

There's no information on who might be involved in the project, but over the years it has passed through the hands of Peter Berg (Lone Survivor) and Pierre Morel (Taken), and Denis Villeneuve (Sicario) has also expressed interest. I doubt any of them will be involved with this new production.

It's awesome to see that there is still interest in a new Dune movie. I think it's in good hands at Legendary. I'd be fine with a film or a TV series as long as the story is solid and reminiscent of Herbert's classic story. Here are all the details from the press release:

LEGENDARY ENTERTAINMENT ACQUIRES RIGHTS TO FRANK HERBERT’S CLASSIC SCI-FI NOVEL DUNE
Burbank, CA – November 21, 2016 – Legendary and the Frank Herbert estate have reached an agreement granting the production entity the film and television motion picture rights to the beloved novel DUNE, one of the most revered science fiction novels of all time. The agreement calls for the development and production of possible film and television projects for a global audience. The projects would be produced by Thomas Tull, Mary Parent and Cale Boyter, with Brian Herbert, Byron Merritt and Kim Herbert serving as executive producers.
Dune has long been considered the crown jewel of science fiction properties. Its legacy and influence is witnessed in everything from STAR WARS to THE MATRIX and often referred to as the science fiction version of LORD OF THE RINGS with its sprawling world and multi-dimensional politics.
The agreement was negotiated by Mike Ross and Jen Grazier on behalf of Legendary and Marcy Morris and Barry Tyerman of JTWAMMK on behalf of the Herbert family.

Video Alleges SUICIDE SQUAD Extended Cut Is Still Missing Joker Scenes

If you were still hoping that perhaps we'd get to see all that cut Joker content in the home release of the extended Suicide Squad film, abandon all hope. A video has surfaced on the DC subreddit that alleges several scenes that were cut from the final version of the film are still missing in the extended cut.

While a couple of the scenes seem necessary to cut so that the plot still makes sense, a majority seem to be needlessly thrown away. I'm not sure what the reasoning is for this one, but I'm disappointed we're likely never going to see all the scenes Leto filmed. See the scenes in question and evidence they existed prior to being cut below.

Netflix Drops First Trailer for Pre-Presidential Biopic BARRY

Netflix has released the first trailer for their biographical take on the college years of President Barack Obama, and it looks pretty solid! Read the description and continue on below...

A young Barack Obama, known to his friends as “Barry,” arrives in New York City in the fall of 1981 to begin his junior year at Columbia University. In a crime-ridden and racially charged environment, Barry finds himself pulled between various social spheres and struggles to maintain a series of increasingly strained relationships with his Kansas-born mother, his estranged Kenyan father, and his classmates.Barry is the story of a young man grappling with those same issues that his country, and arguably the world, are still coming to terms with 35 years later.

I'm interested in watching simply for the fact that it's cool to remember that most Presidents of the United States started out simply as normal people. They had their vices like us, their times of doubt, and were once more human than they appear to be now. I don't think I'll ever have a shot at becoming President, but this trailer made me feel like a guy from the same background as me could be one day. Barry hits Netflix December 16th.

New Details on Marvel's THE INHUMANS IMAX Event and Series

$

Marvel recently announced that they will be developing a TV series based on The Inhumans and that the first two episodes will premiere in IMAX theaters. Thanks to THR, we now have some additional details on the series and the IMAX event.

The Inhumans will debut on more than 1,000 IMAX screens in 74 countries starting Labor Day weekend, so it will most likely premiere on September 1st, 2017. This will be the first two of an eight-episode first season. They will run in theaters for two weeks before airing on ABC as part of the network's fall lineup.

It was also revealed that the first two episodes will be shot entirely in IMAX, which is pretty freakin' cool! That will also include some scenes from subsequent episodes, including some set on the moon. That alone will make it worth going to the theater to see. According to sources, "IMAX is paying for the first two episodes (ABC won't reveal the budget; the show hasn't begun casting), offsetting the hefty costs associated with the pilot and helping to make the deal more attractive to producers ABC Studios and Marvel Television. ABC will then take the IMAX episodes and expand them with additional content for broadcast."

The series is still early in the development process and no cast or director is attached yet. There are also no details on the plot, but it's been made clear that this will not be an Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. spinoff series, which I am happy about. It's also made clear that this is not a replacement for the movie that Marvel Studio has been planning.

As we previously reported, The Inhumans TV series is expected to focus on Black Bolt and the Inhumans royal family. Don't expect to see Vin Diesel in the series either, which is kind of a shame. The Inhumans are a superhuman race that were first introduced in Marvel Comics in 1965.

The Inhuman Royal Family includes Black Bolt, who rules the Inhumans with the help of his royal family including his wife Medusa, whose prehensile hair has superhuman strength. "He is supported by Gorgon, whose cloven hooves can create terrifying controlled shock-waves. Karnak the Shatterer, whose power allows him to see the flaw in anything, logic, matter, even reality itself, and pierce that flaw destroying even things that were thought to be nigh indestructible. Triton, capable of breathing underwater and swimming at superhuman speeds." Then there's Maximus the Mad, who is described as a "genius, inventor, creator, madman, he, when he's had his medication is the technological genius of the royal family. Off his meds, he is just as dangerous to the Inhumans as any other threat with an intimate knowledge of the Royal Family to boot."

Going the IMAX route for TV is definitely an innovative way of doing things, and it will be interesting to see how this all works out and how it does with audiences.

Watch FANTASTIC BEASTS Easter Eggs and Connections to Harry Potter

Mr. Sunday Movies has created another "Every Easter Egg" video this time focusing on Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them. The video does a good job of breaking down a few things easily missed. Also, if you haven't seen the movie, the video contains spoilers, but I'm sure that was obvious.

Joey gave the Fantastic Beasts a 10/10 in his review. I wouldn't rated the movie that high; it's a solid 7/10. The movie was executed well on on all expected fronts: music, effects, production design, and costumes. I couldn't connect with Eddie Redmayne as Newt Scamander— he's too ambiguous to me, perhaps I'll warm to him in more movies. Dan Fogler as Jacob Kowalski was more relatable and is a great stand in for the audience. Something else that knocks the movie down for me is the short time period, everything seems to happen in a handful of days, I missed the sense of time passing that you get from the Harry Potter films. I enjoyed the film, but it was far from perfect to me.

A SNOWPIERCER TV Series Is Headed to TNT

I don't know if you've seen Bong Joon-ho and Chris Evans' post-apocalyptic thriller Snowpiercer or not, but that movie was freakin' awesome. That film was based on a French graphic novel called Le Transperceneige by Jacques Lob, Benjamin Legrand, and Jean-Marc Rochette

TNT has announced that they have ordered a pilot for a series based on the property, and they've hired Josh Friedman to write the script. Friedman previously created the series Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles and has worked on movies such as War of the Worlds and some of the upcoming Avatar sequels.

In case you aren't familiar with Snowpiercer, it's set "seven years after the world has become a frozen wasteland and the remnants of humanity inhabit a gigantic, perpetually moving train that circles the globe. The show questions class warfare, social injustice and the politics of survival."

Sarah Aubrey, EVP Original Programming at TNT said in a statement:

“Snowpiercer has one of the most original concepts to hit the screen in the last decade, and it’s one that offers numerous opportunities for deeper exploration in a series format. We look forward to expanding TNT’s relationship with Tomorrow Studios and their take on a world where humanity is pushed to the extreme.”

It's easy to imagine this story as a TV series. There are some many characters in it and stories to tell with them. I'm actually excited about the prospect of a series so that I can see this futuristic world explored further and in more detail. If you haven't seen the movie yet, make sure to check it out! The Story of THE DARK CRYSTAL Will Continue in New Comic Book Series

the-story-of-the-dark-crystal-will-continue-in-new-comic-book-series2

After over thirty years, Jim Henson and Frank Oz's classic fantasy film The Dark Crystal is getting a sequel! It will be in the form of a comic book mini-series called The Power of the Dark Crystal. It's being published by Boom! Studios from an unproduced script that was written years ago.

The Jim Henson Company announced in 2005 that they would be developing The Power of the Dark Crystal as a feature film. At one point, Genndy Tartakovsky (Samurai Jack) was attached to the project, but nothing has ever happened with it. Apparently, it's been in very slow development. Maybe they hope that this comic will help spark some new interest in the project and give it the boost it needs to get the movie made.

The comic will be 12 issues long and the story is set decades after events of 1982's The Dark Crystal. It follows "Jen and Kira distracted by the pressures of ruling Thra and no longer in touch with the needs of the people — which provokes a Fireling called Thurma to set out to steal a shard of the Dark Crystal with which she intends to restore power to her realm. Unfortunately, that mission might also restore the Skeksis, as well…"

Lisa Henson, President and CEO of the Jim Henson Company, had this to say in a statement:

“The creativity that went into writing and designing the feature film was such that we wanted our fans to be able to see and enjoy it now through this comic book series. We are very proud of the story that the screenwriters David Odell, Annette Odell, and Craig Pearce wrote. Our partners at Archaia and BOOM! Studios are the only people we could trust to expand and illustrate the story, and we are thrilled that it will soon see the light of day!"

I grew up with The Dark Crystal in my life. This was one of my favorite movies as a kid, and I've been wanting to see the story continue since I first saw the movie! I don't know if we'll ever get a movie, but at least we'll get to read the story that it will tell!

The first issue of The Power of the Dark Crystal will be released digitally and in comic stores on February 15, 2017. It will launch in celebration of the movie's 35th anniversary.

Angela Bassett Is the Latest Addition to Marvel’s BLACK PANTHER

Angela Bassett has officially joined the cast of Marvel's Black Panther. Marvel made the announcement and revealed that she will be taking on the role of Ramonda, the mother of T’Challa, a.k.a. Black Panther. Here is a little background on the character:

Ramonda was a woman from South Africa who won the heart of T'Chaka King of Wakanda after his previous wife N'Yami died giving birth to T'Challa. She was surrogate mother to Hunter and T'Challa and with T'Chaka produced a daughter named Shuri.

Bassett makes a great addition to an already fantastic cast that includes Chadwick Boseman in the title role alongside Michael B. Jordan, Forest Whitaker, Lupita Nyong’o, Danai Gurira, Daniel Kaluuya, Winston Duke, and Florence Kasumba

Black Panther is being directed by Ryan Coogler (Fruitvale Station, Creed), and the film arrives in theaters on February 16, 2018. To catch up on all of our previously released Black Panther movie news, click here.

Director Paul W.S. Anderson Is Adapting Capcom's MONSTER HUNTER

Back in 2011, Capcom producer Ryozo Tsujimoto announced that there was a big screen adaptation in the works for their video game franchise Monster Hunter. Director Paul W.S. Anderson has been interested in developing this property for years, and now it looks like he's going to make it!

Anderson directed the original Mortal Kombat film and the Resident Evil film franchise. This seems like the kind of film that he would want to make.

In case you're not familiar, Monster Hunter is a series of fantasy-themed action role-playing games that all started in 2004 on the PlayStation 2. The game centers on a hunter in a fantasy world who embarks on quests to hunt out specific kinds of monsters to kill or capture them. When talking about the basic plot of the film, Anderson said:

“For every Monster, there is a Hero. An ordinary man in a dead end job discovers that he is actually the descendant of an ancient hero. He must travel to a mystical world to train to become a Monster Hunter, before the mythical creatures from that world destroy ours.”

When talking to Deadline, he went on to elaborate on his plan for adapting the ambitious game series, which has no main characters to base the film on. He explained:

“There are no real central characters so it’s a bit like when we first approached Resident Evil and imposed our own characters and story on that world. I think this is a perfect IP for us to do exactly that same thing again. The Monster Hunter world includes these huge deserts that make the Gobi Desert look like a sandbox, and they have ships that sail through the sand. These full on galleons, but rather than sailing on the ocean waves, they sail through waves of sand… You’re fighting these giant creatures, some as big as a city block. They live underneath the Earth and when they burst out, it’s like the best of Dune. You also have these flying dragons, giant spiders, the most wonderful creatures.”

Anderson said that he plans on making a change from the video game to the film. The movie will take place in both the real world and the Monster Hunter world. He said:

“The final act comes back to our world and it’s basically this epic battle in and around LAX. Then at the end we’re suddenly confronted with the fact that the mythological creatures of our world have come back to wreak vengeance. So we definitely have the second film where that would be planned out.”

It sounds like he wants to make a completely epic film. This would easily be the biggest and craziest film that Anderson has made. Anderson is the kind of director that makes big budget B-style movies. Many of them have turned out to be really fun and entertaining, but a movie like this would have to be on another level, and I'm just not sure he has got the storytelling chops to make it great.

The director released a piece of concept art that you can see above featuring the LAX battle that he's talking about. Anderson has already written the script for Monster Hunter, and it looks like it will be the next film that he directs.

Ben Wheatley and Tom Hiddleston to Reteam for Frank Miller's HARD BOILED

Director Ben Wheatley is attached to direct a feature film adaptation of Frank Miller and Geof Darrow's action-packed comic book Hard Boiled for Warner Bros. Wheatley is the crazy director who previously brought us films such as Kill List, Sightseers, and High Rise. According to Deadline, he is looking to team back up with his High Rise star Tom Hiddleston for the project.

Hard Boiled was originally published in 1990, and the story focuses on insurance investigator Carl Seltz, who is "a suburban insurance investigator, a loving husband, and devoted father," who learns that he’s really a homicidal cyborg tax collector codenamed Nixon. Nixon is "a berserk, homicidal tax collector racking up mind-boggling body counts in a diseased urban slaughterhouse." He has another psychotic entity within him named Unit Four, who is described as a killing machine and the "last hope of the future's enslaved mechanical servants."

This is a wicked cool story, and it's a perfect project for Wheatley to take on. It would be awesome if the studio was able to work out a deal with Hiddleston to star in it. If you've never seen any of Wheatley's films, you should definitely check them out as they are all insane in the greatest of ways. His most recent movie is called Free Fire and looks freakin' badass! If you haven't seen the trailer yet, do yourself a favor and click here to watch it.

Interesting New Story Details Revealed for the TOMB RAIDER Movie Reboot

$

We already knew that the upcoming Tomb Raider movie reboot starring Alicia Vikander would be using elements from the most recent video game adventures of Lara Croft, but today we've got some new details on the story to share with you thanks to HeyUGuys and an interview they had with Tomb Raider producer Graham King. There's an interesting twist they've added to the story involving Croft's search for her father. King explains:

"Well this is kind of what we call a 'back to the roots story.' This is a young Lara Croft in search to see if her father is dead or alive, so it has a very emotional part to it and I think that’s what Alicia found so interesting about it. I think the storytelling is really good and I think we’ve got the right crew and a great director and I think it’s going to be really fun making a film like this."

Lara's father is Richard James Croft, and he's never been the focus of any of Lara's video game storylines. Lara's father Richard did make an appearance in the original Tomb Raider film. He was played by Angelina Jolie's real-life dad Jon Voight. Here are a few details about her father that have been learned through the game franchise.

According to the storylines told in Tomb Raider Legend, Anniversary and Underworld Lara's father Richard Croft was an archaeologist, who after his wife's disappearance travelled all over the world investigating archaeological sites and ruins in search for a stone dais, similar to the one where she had disappeared. During this time, he raised and taught Lara alone. However, he disappeared and was declared legally dead, although his remains have never been found. Even Lara unearthed human remains that could not be identified as his. From what Winston says, we are inclined to believe that he had quite a collection of artefacts.

It was revealed in an unlockable biography that he died while on a dig in Cambodia. I'm sure Warner Bros. will change some things up for the movie, though. Who knows, maybe he'll be found alive in the film. If that's the case, I can see the studio wanting to cast a big popular actor in the role.

Tomb Raider will be released on March 16, 2018.
