Karl Urban Is Set to Star in the Action Thriller ENTRY LEVEL

$

Dredd and Star Trek star Karl Urban has landed the lead role in an upcoming action thriller called Entry Level. He’ll star alongside Brenton Thwaites (Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales, The Giver), and it sounds like it could be a pretty intense movie.

The film opens on a young man (Thwaites) who mysteriously awakens in a super high-security office building and is forced by an unknown stranger to complete a strictly timed series of dangerous tasks that implicate him in a deadly crime with global consequences. The building’s top-level security team, led by Chief Morris Baslo (Urban), pursues him in this action packed game of cat and mouse.

Urban and Thwaites are both great actors, and this seems like a solid film project for both of them. The movie will be directed by Franck Khalfoun (Amityville: The Awakening) from a script written by Benjamin Hurley. Producer Sheila Taylor said in a statement:

“Karl Urban’s ability to present a smart, gritty character who is shaded with humanity makes him the ideal person for this role. We couldn’t imagine a better foil for our film, and cannot wait to watch his character race against the clock as he puts the pieces together.”

Producer Tannaz Anisi added:

“Karl Urban is one of the film industry’s most exciting actors having played a number of iconic roles in recent times. He brings a level of gravitas and suspense to all of his performances and has a proven track record of playing versatile and commanding characters. Karl is perfect to bring this heart racing chase film to life.”

The film will start shooting in early 2017, and I can’t wait to see how it turns out.

The Megazord in the New POWER RANGERS Movie Looks Ridiculous and Fans React Hilariously

the-megazord-in-the-new-power-rangers-movie-looks-ridiculous-and-the-fans-hilariously-react1

Power Rangers fans have been waiting to see what the Megazord would look like in the new Power Rangers movie coming out. Well, the official Power Rangers Twitter account released our first look at the full Megazord in its action figure form, and I’m not impressed. In fact, it seems like no one is impressed.

I haven’t seen anyone say anything positive about it, and why would they? It looks ridiculous. It’s definitely not as cool as the Megazord from the original TV series. I understand that they tried to give it a slick updated look, but I think they failed with their redesign.

I don’t know, maybe the actual movie version of the Megazord will look better, but I’m not a fan of what I’m seeing here. I’m not sure how the individual Zords are supposed to combine into this unless they all kind of morph and melt together.

I love some of the reactions on the Twitter page, and I've posted a few of my favorites below:

Saban’s Power Rangers follows five ordinary high school kids who must become something extraordinary when they learn that their small town of Angel Grove – and the world – is on the verge of being obliterated by an alien threat. Chosen by destiny, our heroes quickly discover that they are the only ones who can save the planet. But to do so they will have to overcome their real-life issues and band together as the Power Rangers before it is too late.

The Power Rangers cast includes Dacre Montgomery as Jason the Red Ranger, RJ Cyler as Billy the Blue Ranger, Naomi Scott as Kimberly the Pink Ranger, Becky G as Trini the Yellow Ranger, Ludi Lin as Zack the Black Ranger, Elizabeth Banks as Rita Repulsa, Bryan Cranston as Zordon, and Bill Hader is voicing Alpha 5.

The movie is being directed by Dean Israelite (Project Almanac), and it comes out on March 24, 2017.

Apparently Ben Affleck’s BATMAN Script Has Some Serious Problems and the Studio Doesn’t Care

With Ben Affleck writing the script for his solo Batman movie and attached to direct, I’ve been pretty excited to see what he will do with this character because he’s proven to be a very talented filmmaker. Unfortunately, it looks like Affleck’s Batman project may be on a rough road.

I actually liked the way Batman was portrayed in Batman v Superman. It was a little rough around the edges, but I was hoping that would be smoothed out with Justice League and The Batman. We still might get a great film, but according to screenwriter Bret Easton Ellis, the current script has serious problems.

During an interview with The Ringer, Ellis said:

“I was having dinner with a couple of executives who know other executives who are working on the [forthcoming] Batman movie, The Batman. And they were just telling me that there are serious problems with the script.”

He went on to explain that the studio executives don’t even care about these issues:

“The executives I was having dinner with were complaining about people who work on the Batman movie. And they just said they went to the studio and they said, ‘Look, the script is … Here’s 30 things that are wrong with it that we can fix.’ And [the executives] said, ‘We don’t care. We don’t really care. The amount of money we’re going to make globally, I mean 70 percent of our audience is not going to be seeing this in English. And it doesn’t really matter, these things that you’re bringing up about the flaws of the script.’ So I do think global concerns play a big part in how movies, and what movies, are being made, obviously.”

He later regretted saying these things about the script and tried to clarify his statements in a Facebook post. Obviously, he panicked when his statements exploded online:

“During a long interview with The Ringer’s Sean Fennessey we talked about reasons why studio movies are so bad now and touched on the global needs of the marketplace. I told him something I had heard about the new Batman movie as an example of what might be the problem: I was talking with two executives who have NOTHING to do with the Batman movie and who KNEW people who were involved with the production. The two executives I was having dinner with were relating the problems they had heard about the script from people working on the Batman project–that’s all. I know no one involved with the Batman movie and I didn’t realize that my comments would make it into The Ringer piece or else I wouldn’t have cited that particular movie–I have no idea what the Batman script is like and I regret that it came off as if I was disparaging the project. Another reason to be careful giving interviews.”

If the statements about the Batman film having serious problems are legit, though, that’s not the way that executives should be thinking about the movies they make. That kind of pisses me off because that’s a complete disservice to the fans! I don’t understand why they wouldn’t care about putting out quality films! This is a huge difference between Marvel and DC because Marvel actually cares about the films they make for their characters.

Just last week I wrote a rant about how cool it would be if DC let Marvel help them make their movies. Now I think that DC should just let Marvel make their films, especially if they don’t care enough to want to make great films for these classic characters. It just seems that Marvel would probably would care more about the DC films than the executives at DC. That’s pretty sad.

Of course, Affleck has already admitted that he’s not happy with the script for the solo Batman film:

“We're still working on it and I'm not happy enough with it yet to actually go out there and make a Batman movie, which I would have the highest of standards I would say. It's something that would have to pass a very high bar for me. It's not like, ‘Yeah, this might be fun. Let's go bang this out.’”

So, at least Affleck cares about making sure the script meets his high standards before he makes the movie. That gives me some kind of hope. Of course, if he ends up dropping out of the project, then we know there are some major issues.

BACK TO THE FUTURE Part III Gets an Awesome WESTWORLD Mashup

If you're a fan of Back to the Future and the HBO series Westworld, you've got to watch this fantastic fan trailer that combines the two! It's called "Back to Westworld," and it thrusts Marty into the dark and exciting world of Westworld where Buford “Mad Dog” Tannen is clearly a host. The video was edited together by Todd Spence, and I loved how it turned out.

How funny would it be to see Marty McFly actually show up in Westworld as an older man after going through the experiences he has already gone through. This mashup video is the closest thing we'll get to seeing that, so enjoy!

There Might Be a CAPTAIN MARVEL Easter Egg in DOCTOR STRANGE

$

There might have been a little Captain Marvel Easter egg in Doctor Strange, and if you were really paying attention you might have caught it. If not, then let's talk about it! Don’t worry, there aren't any spoilers here, so if you haven’t seen the movie, this is just something to keep a look out for when you do see the movie.

Right before Stephen Strange gets into his devastating car accident that sets his whole story of studying the mystic arts in motion, he is on the phone with a colleague who is talking to him about several possible new patients that he could take on.

One of the patients mentioned is described as a Marine Colonel who has a spinal injury from using “experimental armor.” A lot of fans have speculated that this could be Col. James “Rhodey” Rhodes (Don Cheadle), who was partially paralyzed in Captain America: Civil War at the end of the epic airport battle sequence.

According to EW, director Scott Derrickson previously said that War Machine wasn’t the one being referenced. Doctor Strange is supposed to end around the same time as the events that we saw in Civil War. If that’s the case, the patient in question at the beginning of the movie couldn’t have been Rhodes because the accident took place years before.

It’s speculated that the “Marine Colonel” being referred to in Doctor Strange is most likely one of the men Tony Stark’s rival weapon’s manufacturer, Justin Hammer (Sam Rockwell), used while testing his own Iron Man-type combat armor. There is footage in Iron Man 2 of one person getting hurt while testing out the suit.

Now on to Captain Marvel. There is another patient that's mentioned in the phone call. Strange was very interested in working with her because she was a young woman in her 20s who was struck by lightening. The report reminds us that this was “a serious injury complicated by an electronic implant in her brain to help quell her schizophrenia.”

Derrickson was asked if this was a reference to Captain Marvel, but he didn’t confirm or deny, all he did was smile and say, “Remember that Brittany Murphy movie where she goes ‘I’ll never tell…’”

If it is Captain Marvel, we know that isn’t how she gets her powers in the comic series, but it has previously been confirmed that her origin story has been changed, so there is a possibility that this could offer us some insight to her new origin. If that’s the case, it’s definitely an interesting way to go!

Shane Black Says THE PREDATOR Does Not Take Place in Suburbia

Last week it was reported that Shane Black's The Predator would be set in the unlikely location of suburbia. It was explained that the story "plunks the deadly alien hunter, who audiences have seen fight in jungles, concrete jungles, frozen wastelands and alien planets, in the harsh environment of … suburbia."

I actually thought the concept of the Predator hunting his way through the suburbs was a cool concept! Unfortunately, it looks like that's not going to be the case. During an interview with Collider, writer and director Shane Black told them, "The Predator is not a movie about the suburbs."

Apparently, THR's sources were misinformed. So as of right now there is still no information on where the story is set or what the plot of the film will be. When previously talking about the film, Black offered the following insight:

“I think the Predator movies have slightly veered from typical sci-fi in that there is a sort of thriller aspect to them. I think it should be scary, I think it should be funny, and I think ultimately it should be wondrous and about perceiving things that human beings very seldom get a chance to see… I don’t mean movie audiences I mean characters in the movie. I’m not saying the movie will be nothing anyone’s seen before (laughs).”

As a fan of Black's film work, I'm sure he's going to give fans something exciting and unique with this film. Knowing Black, it will probably take place during Christmas. I'm looking forward to this new Predator movie, and I can't wait to learn more about what it's going to entail!

"Potter Things" is a perfectly executed fan-made mashup of the hit Netflix series Stranger Things and the magical Harry Potter film franchise. I saw this video pop up last week, but as I was about to post it, the video was pulled off YouTube for some reason. It has since been posted again by the YouTube channel Info BRO!, and it's a video that you do not want to miss!

When the Stranger Things boys show up at Hogwarts, things don't go exactly as planned...

Seeing these two worlds collide is quite a fun experience and they are combined together so well and so seamlessly! If you haven’t seen this yet, I promise you’re going to love it!

DEADPOOL 2 Will Start Shooting in Early 2017, Drew Goddard in the Running to Direct

Ryan Reynolds' Deadpool sequel has been a hot topic of conversation lately because of some of the drama surrounding the production. As you know, director Tim Miller recently left the project because his vision for the film didn't match up with the vision of Reynolds and the writers. It was also recently reported that Junkie XL would not come back to provide the musical score for the sequel because of Miller’s surprising exit.

Regardless of these setbacks, and the fact that the film doesn't officially have a director yet, the studio still plans on pushing the film into production early next year. The news comes from What’s Filming, which is a website that lists all upcoming film productions coming to Vancouver. They say Deadpool 2 is expected to start shooting in January 2017.

Fox and their creative team are obviously feeling confident enough to move things forward. Last week we learned that John Wick co-director David Leitch was their top choice to replace Miller in the director's chair, but there's been no official announcement. The studio is looking at several other replacement options as well, A couple of other names that have popped up include Drew Goddard (Cabin in the Woods, Daredevil) and Magnus Martens (Luke Cage, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.). If Fox is looking to move forward this fast, maybe they've already chosen a director and they just haven't officially announced it yet.

I initially thought that Leitch would be a great choice, but I also like the thought of Goddard taking on the project as well! I loved what he did with Cabin in the Woods, and his work on developing Marvel's Daredevil was fantastic. He also worked on Ridley Scott's The Martian. The guy is super talented and Fox would be lucky to have either of these guys on board to direct Daredevil 2

As of right now there are no plot details for the sequel, but we do know that Cable will be making his big screen debut, which definitely has fans excited. I can't wait to see what they have planned for the character. Deadpool 2 is scheduled to be released on March 2, 2018.

ECHO TORCH Is an Incredible Sci-Fi Short That Reveals a Hidden World Layered on Our Own

I’ve got another awesome short film for you to watch today called "Echo Torch." This is a magnificent and eerie sci-fi film that tells the story of an inventor who creates an electrical torch. So what’s so special about this torch? Well, it reveals “a hidden world layered upon our own - filled with beautiful spirits, strange creatures, and dangerous phantoms.”

The short was written and directed by Chris Preksta, and it’s truly some beautifully amazing film work and storytelling. I absolutely love the concept, and it has a really cool haunting and classic vibe to it. It reminds me of a lot of those great '80s films that I grew up watching. On top of that, the VFX work that was done for it is pretty impressive stuff.

I loved this film! It’s a stunning piece of filmmaking that you need to watch as soon as you get a chance!

GHOST IN THE SHELL Trailer Tease Shows an Invisible Scarlett Johansson Kick Some Ass

A new trailer tease has been released for the upcoming live-action Ghost in the Shell movie. It features Scarlett Johansson as the Major while she beats the living crap out of someone while she's invisible. It's a brief clip but it sure does look cool! It looks like we'll be getting a full trailer for the film later this week, so stay tuned for that!

Ghost in the Shell follows the Major, special ops, one-of-a-kind human-cyborg hybrid, who leads the elite task force Section 9. Devoted to stopping the most dangerous criminals and extremists, Section 9 is faced with an enemy whose singular goal is to wipe out Hanka Robotic’s advancements in cyber technology.

The film is being directed by Rupert Sanders (Snow White and the Huntsman), and it's based on the classic manga series that was written and illustrated by Masamune Shirow. The movie also stars Beat Takeshi Kitano as Daisuke Aramaki, Juliette Binoche as Dr. Ouelet, Michael Pitt as Kuze, Pilou Asbæk as Batou, and Kaori Momoi. The members of Section 9 are played by Chin Han, Danusia Samal, Lasarus Ratuere, Yutaka Izumihara, and Tuwanda Manyimo.

Ghost in the Shell is set to be released in theaters on March 31, 2017. You can watch five previously released teasers for the film here.

By now you should be familiar with YouTuber The Unusual Suspect. His videos of movies "singing" popular songs have gone viral more than a few times, and with each one, he seems to get more polished as he goes!

I have a particular soft spot for this latest one because I'm a Bruno Mars fan, but also because the editing is on point! Out of all the songs he would have to edit for timing, this one had to be by far the most difficult for the sped up lines and lyrics. The final result is a video you'll find yourself watching more than once.

In case you've never heard the original song, you can check it out below before or after the video!

GAME OF THRONES Actor Ciaran Hinds Cast as Steppenwolf in JUSTICE LEAGUE

$

It feels like Zack Snyder's Justice League has been filming for a very long time — they started way back in April — and we've known for months that the villain (or at least one of the villains) would be Steppenwolf, a character first bizarrely revealed in a deleted scene from Snyder's Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice earlier this year.

But now we know who will be playing that creature in the new film. The Wrap says it'll be Ciaran Hinds, perhaps best known for playing Mance Rayder on HBO's Game of Thrones. The outlet says he'll provide the motion capture work for the character, and it's a pretty good bet he'll also provide his voice as well. He's reportedly already wrapped production on the film, and Steppenwolf will receive an "upgraded" look for the new movie.

In the comics, Steppenwolf is a general who commands Darkseid's army. (You'll probably recall that Darkseid himself was teased in one of BvS's many dream sequences.) So yeah, I can see Hinds out there shouting at troops of Parademons on an intergalactic battlefield. Whether or not the character will have any major physical interaction with the JL is yet to be determined. (Seems like they'd be able to take him out pretty easily, but who knows?) The deleted scene above also shows off three "mother boxes," which will be important to the mythology of the films moving forward and will serve as the MacGuffins of the upcoming movie.

Justice League hits theaters on November 17, 2017.

Behind The Scenes Footage Shows How STRAIGHT OUTTA COMPTON's Pool Scene Was Shot

When I first saw the description for this scene on Reddit, I was curious as to why it was getting the attention it was. The "pool scene" was just a party scene from Straight Outta Compton and there really wasn't anything spectacular in that scene that really warranted a "behind the scenes" explanation...or so I thought, anyway.

This video is a perfect example of how hard filmmaking is, and how much work goes into something that will go unnoticed by 90% of viewers! I never even thought about how they managed to get the camera from the balcony to the ground on one shot or across the pool! Check out the video to see how they made it happen.

Watch The WONDER WOMAN Trailer Mashed Up With The Classic '70s Theme Song

$

0

Let me start this off by saying the original Wonder Woman theme song is absolutely the cheesiest but also the most awesome theme of all time. From the heart of the '70s, it's funky, fast tempoed, and throws in a healthy amount of goofy lyrics. Take a look:

Wonder Woman, Wonder Woman.
All the world's waiting for you,
and the power you possess.

In your satin tights,
Fighting for your rights
And the old Red, White and Blue.

Wonder Woman, Wonder Woman.
Now the world is ready for you,
and the wonders you can do.

Make a hawk a dove,
Stop a war with love,
Make a liar tell the truth.

Wonder Woman,
Get us out from under, Wonder Woman.
All our hopes are pinned upon you.
And the magic that you do.

Stop a bullet cold,
Make the Axis fold,
Change their minds,
and change the world.

Wonder Woman, Wonder Woman.
You're a wonder, Wonder Woman.

Don't worry, you'll hear it soon enough as Sebastian Hughes went and combined the classic theme with footage from the new film for a combination that almost works! I still like the current feel, but if they remade this song for the film, I would be OK with it.

If you're someone who watched the original series and now needs some nostalgia, here's the original intro. Wonder Woman hits theaters June 2, 2017.

Michael Giacchino to Score Marvel and Sony's SPIDER-MAN: HOMECOMING

$

One of the biggest disappointments of the Marvel Cinematic Universe has been its largely forgettable music. (We posted a video essay about this not too long ago.) For the most part, the music has been bland, boring, and nowhere near as iconic as these characters deserve. But there have been a few bright spots, including Michael Giacchino's score for Doctor Strange, and now there's some good news for those who are hoping that the future scores of the MCU will continue that upward trend: Giacchino will provide the score for Marvel Studios and Sony Pictures' Spider-Man: Homecoming.

Giacchino was recently brought in to compose the score for Rogue One: A Star Wars Story after Alexandre Desplat dropped out, so it's a good time to be a Giacchino fan because he has his fingers in all kinds of geek-centric properties right now. I'm excited to see what he'll do with the Spidey score, and if you're also a fan of his, I'd encourage you to check out a piece I wrote about the music of Lost which includes videos of Giacchino conducting an orchestra playing tracks from the show.

Spider-Man: Homecoming officially wrapped production last month, and the film arrives on July 7, 2017.

Hear Chewbacca Speak English in Behind The Scenes Footage From STAR WARS

$

I always assumed Peter Mayhew was just mouthing and flailing his arms on the set of Star Wars, but it turns out (via io9) he actually has dialogue in English he says during the film! Today is the first time Star Wars fans are actually going to see that happening.

In this behind the scenes video shared by Mayhew on Twitter, we see Chewbacca speaking English in a rough cut from Star Wars: A New Hope as he's talking to Han Solo. The footage (which was found by Filmumentaries filmmaker Jamie Benning) is kind of rough, but you'll hear Chewbacca belting out dialogue in an English accent and everything:

I never in a million years would've guessed that's how he sounds in real life. Weirdly enough, he actually kind of sounds like a human Chewbacca! I guess if there was one person to fit that description it would have to be Mayhew, right?
