Throwback to the Time The Rock Was in STAR TREK: VOYAGER

I was doing my casual reading of the internet today and stumbled across a Variety article talking about celebrities that have appeared in Star Trek. While I wasn't surprised to see Tom Hardy and others in the mix, I had no idea Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson appeared in Star Trek! That's mostly due to the fact that I've never watched Star Trek: Voyager because it's pretty obvious it's him if you watch the episode.

Rock plays...surprise surprise...a wrestler taking on Seven of Nine in a match. It's actually really well done! It made me want to check out Voyager, but also made me laugh out loud when Johnson delivered a "Rock Bottom" to end the match.

Truly something worth seeing if you've never seen it before. Happy 50th anniversary, Star Trek!

BEN-HUR Officially Biggest Flop of the Summer With $120 Million Loss

The Ghostbusters reboot can breathe a sigh of relief as it will not be remembered as the biggest flop of Summer 2016. That title belongs to the remake of Ben-Hur, which stands to lose as much as $120 million or more according to THR. We reported a couple weeks ago the film was off to a rocky start and things have not gotten better from there.

Beyond the people who complained about rehashing a beloved classic, the film was also critically panned, getting low scores almost universally.

The loss sees MGM (who partnered with Paramount) taking a huge loss on the film as they provided 80% of its budget.

Will this finally wake Hollywood up and tell them audiences don't want remakes of classic films? Probably not, but it should considering how this summer has gone for them.

Star-Lord, Gamora, Drax, Rocket Raccoon, and Groot: if you have a problem; if no-one else can help and if you can find them; maybe you can hire "The A-Team of the Galaxy"!

Today, we show you a commercial for the feature, which will be in stores October 11th. Batman will, of course, be voiced by Adam West, Burt Ward as Robin, and Julie Newmar as Batgirl! Judging by how hilarious this commercial is the feature should be a good time! Can't wait to see it.

Learn What It Feels Like to Be Strangled to Death in New Trailer for OUIJA: ORIGIN OF EVIL

Universal Pictures has released a new creepy-ass trailer for their upcoming horror film Ouija: Origin of Evil. The new trailer features a good amount of nightmarish new footage that I'd never want to see in real life.

This movie looks like it's going to be a great horror film that will be incredibly fun to watch in a theater full of screaming people. If you're looking forward to seeing this movie, you'll enjoy this new trailer. In it, the cute little possessed girl goes into detail about how it feels to be strangled to death... good times!

It was never just a game. Inviting audiences again into the lore of the spirit board, Ouija: Origin of Evil tells a terrifying new tale as the follow-up to 2014’s sleeper hit that opened at number one. In 1965 Los Angeles, a widowed mother and her two daughters add a new stunt to bolster their séance scam business and unwittingly invite authentic evil into their home. When the youngest daughter is overtaken by the merciless spirit, this small family confronts unthinkable fears to save her and send her possessor back to the other side.

The movie is set to haunt theaters on October 21st. Oh yeah! I also included a fun video of a spooky prank played on audiences at a special event for the film.

Geoff Johns Discusses DC Movie Changes That Will Bring Hope and Optimism

After all the negative reviews for Batman v Superman and Suicide Squad, Warner Bros. and the DC movie team are definitely making changes to the upcoming films. During an interview with the Wall Street Journal Geoff Johns, DC Comics chief creative officer, opened up on what they are doing to make the upcoming slate of DC films better. Some of those upcoming films include Wonder Woman, Justice League, The Flash, Aquaman, Batman, and Cyborg.

For the longest time, WB seemed to have this idea that the dark and gritty style of their films set them apart from Marvel. We've seen that in almost every film they've produced, but Johns wants to bring something more optimistic to the table. He shared his point of view saying:

“[I]n the past, I think the studio has said, ‘Oh, DC films are gritty and dark and that’s what makes them different.’ That couldn’t be more wrong. It’s a hopeful and optimistic view of life. Even Batman has a glimmer of that in him. If he didn’t think he’d make tomorrow better, he’d stop.”

WB executive Jon Berg was part of the interview as well, and he said that after they saw the reactions to Batman v Superman, they accelerated the story for Justice League "to get to the hope and optimism a little faster.”

It's also explained that Justice League will “directly address Batman’s extreme actions in [Batman v Superman], such as torturing criminals and nearly killing the Man of Steel, rather than accept them as par for the course.” I assumed they would do that because they did the same thing in Batman v Superman when they addressed the destruction Superman caused in Man of Steel. I guess whenever they take things to the extreme and people complain about it, they try to fit it into the story of the next film to rationalize it.

According to Johns, what it all comes down to is that they are “trying to take a really hard look at everything to make sure we stay true to the characters and tell stories that celebrate them.”

Here's the thing... light or dark, it doesn't matter. These films could be either, that's not what makes the movies good or bad. What makes or breaks the movie is the story, script, and character development. That's what they need to focus on and improve in my opinion. Making things more hopeful and optimistic won't make the script better, but if they have those three things, the movie should fall into place and make critics happy.

We'll just have to wait and see if this new direction they are taking these DC films will work.

Wonder Woman is the next DC movie to be released, and it comes out June 2nd, 2017. Justice League will follow on November 17th, 2017.

Watch: The Kid Lebowski in This Weird Short Film

I went too deep into Reddit today, but I'm glad I did. If I hadn't I would've missed out on "Bittersweet Pizza" or what I'm now calling The Kid Lebowski. The Kid Lebowski is essentially The Big Lebowski without the violence, swearing (for the most part), or large plot points of the original.

For example "Danny" (as he's called in the film) doesn't die, there's no Jesus (thankfully), and really no bowling period.

The parts it gets right though are pretty amazing. Honestly, I was dying laughing at the recreation of the "exchange" where they are supposed to throw the money off the bridge. If you want to skip to the film's beginning, start around the 1:00 mark. Great effort by ShaggieTV.

Incredible Trailer for Ben Affleck's 1920s-Set Gangster Movie LIVE BY NIGHT

Warner Bros. has released the first trailer for Ben Affleck's new film Live By Night, which he both directed and stars in. This movie looks so damn good! It's based on Dennis Lehane’s 2012 prohibition-era thriller novel, and it also stars Elle Fanning, Sienna Miller, Zoe Saldana, Chris Messina, and Chris Cooper. It seems Affleck has another home run on his hands. The guy is a solidly talented director and I'm excited to check this one out! Here's a detailed story description:

Boston, 1926. The ’20s are roaring. Liquor is flowing, bullets are flying, and one man sets out to make his mark on the world.
Prohibition has given rise to an endless network of underground distilleries, speakeasies, gangsters, and corrupt cops. Joe Coughlin, the youngest son of a prominent Boston police captain, has long since turned his back on his strict and proper upbringing. Now having graduated from a childhood of petty theft to a career in the pay of the city’s most fearsome mobsters, Joe enjoys the spoils, thrills, and notoriety of being an outlaw.
But life on the dark side carries a heavy price. In a time when ruthless men of ambition, armed with cash, illegal booze, and guns, battle for control, no one—neither family nor friend, enemy nor lover—can be trusted. Beyond money and power, even the threat of prison, one fate seems most likely for men like Joe: an early death. But until that day, he and his friends are determined to live life to the hilt.
Joe embarks on a dizzying journey up the ladder of organized crime that takes him from the flash of Jazz Age Boston to the sensual shimmer of Tampa’s Latin Quarter to the sizzling streets of Cuba. Live by Night is a riveting epic layered with a diverse cast of loyal friends and callous enemies, tough rumrunners and sultry femmes fatales, Bible-quoting evangelists and cruel Klansmen, all battling for survival and their piece of the American dream. At once a sweeping love story and a compelling saga of revenge, it is a spellbinding tour de force of betrayal and redemption, music and murder, that brings fully to life a bygone era when sin was cause for celebration and vice was a national virtue.

Live By Night comes out on October 20th, 2017.

J.J. Abrams Is Teaming Up with Meryl Streep on Series Adaptation of THE NIX

J.J. Abrams is set to develop a series adaptation of the novel The Nix for Warner Bros Television. Meryl Streep is set to star in and produce the series, and Abrams will even direct some episodes.

The novel the series will be based on was written by Nathan Hill, and it's described as "a sprawling generational tale that focuses on a hippie-era mother who gets national press exposure for throwing rocks at a conservative governor on the presidential campaign trail." Deadline goes on to offer more story details saying, "before you know it, her estranged son — a professor, aspiring novelist and general underachiever — seizes an opportunity to get himself out of debt by writing a scathing profile of his estranged mother."

Abrams and Streep are both extremely talented and powerful in the entertainment industry, and there's no doubt that this series is going to be amazing.

Streep recently starred in Florence Foster Jenkins, for which she'll probably win another Oscar. As for Abrams, his last film was Star Wars: The Force Awakens and he’s executive producer on HBO's Westworld series. There's no word yet on what his next film project will be, but knowing Abrams he's probably shooting a secret film right now.

Kevin Smith Reveals the Plot for MALLRATS 2 and Says It's a "Family Melodrama With Cursing In It"

The last thing we heard about Kevin Smith's Mallrats 2 was that it was going to be developed into a ten-part series. I was very excited about this because now Smith will get to tell more of a story with all the characters that we came to enjoy in the first film.

I loved Mallrats, and I couldn't be more excited that Smith is going to get to continue the story of these characters in a sequel series. Smith recently revealed some plot details of his upcoming Mallrats in an interview with Creative Screenwriting, along with the directors that inspired the franchise and the tone we can expect from it.

"It’s a real sweet, family story. It’s a multi-generational tale. It’s my chance to do John Hughes and Degrassi Junior High, because much like the Degrassi formula we know our legacy cast – we know Brody and Rene and T.S. and Jay and Silent Bob – and then we meet their kids. So we meet Brody and Rene’s daughter Banner Bruce, and the story takes place in his world and her world. Nobody goes to the fucking mall anymore, so the kids are baffled by it, and Brody still believes in it in a big, bad way."

No one goes to the mall to hang out anymore? Smith must not go to the mall very often because tons of teenagers still hang out at the mall. They're all playing Pokemon Go there. He went on to talk about being inspired by John Landis and John Hughes:

"The thing that I’m happiest about is that when I was doing it as a movie – I always saw the two inspirations for Mallrats as John Landis and John Hughes – and the Mallrats 2 script was very John Landis. Very antic, with guns everywhere, and lots of explosions and action, and less John Hughes.
"The chance to do Mallrats as a series allows me to do more John Hughes than John Landis and particularly the area of Hughes that I never got to tackle as much as I did in Yoga Hosers: high school. Yoga Hosers was the first time I got to play with high school characters and, oddly enough, as a forty-six-year-old man I think my maturity level is just at high school level right now?"

He then talked about his excitement for the series, saying:

"Mallrats is high school and family melodrama with cursing in it. It’s like Degrassi Junior High if everyone said “motherfucker” and it was set in America. I love it so much. I cannot wait to do that. It excites me just to think about it."

I've been watching Smith's films since Clerks was released, and for the most part I've liked everything that he's done. The one film I can't get behind, though, is Yoga Hosers. It was one of the worst film I've seen this year. Regardless of that, I'm still a fan, I still love Mallrats, and I'm excited to see what he does with this upcoming sequel series. Bring it on, Kevin!

There's a Fan-Made Animated INDIANA JONES Film Coming Later This Month

I've been following artist Patrick Schoenmaker for some time now. A few years ago we shared some cool cartoon-style Indiana Jones art that he created. Apparently, he's been obsessed with this style and over the past five years, he's been developing a fan-made animated film! As a fan of his art, I can't wait to see how this animated film turns out!

The artist explains how the project began on his website:

"Indiana Jones must have been my first true movie hero ever since I watched Raiders of the Lost Ark on a VCR way back when. Yes, some other heroes came and went, but Indy always held a special place. After Crystal Skull was released, my love for the character was once again fully ignited and with no new movies on the horizon back then, I decided to set up an Indiana Jones project of my own to keep the fire burning a little bit longer. So, that was back in 2011 and 'a little bit longer' turned into 5 years of hard work. The end of the project is finally in sight."

The project he's been working on is called The Adventures of Indiana Jones, and it will be released on September 29th! I've got several illustrations that he's created for the project over the years that you can see below.

The Russo Bros. have released the first official photo from the set of Avengers: Infinity War. It's not much, but it does feature Josh Brolin all decked out a mo-cap suit. He is rehearsing for his role as Thanos, who will have a much bigger and more active role in the upcoming film.

I'm excited to finally see Thanos fully realized int he MCU and in full on action. I'm also excited to see Brolin bring the character to life in a way we've never seen before. The actor has previously stated that he will be "bringing the wrath” as the villain.

Brolin is an incredible actor, and there's no doubt that he's going to give an incredible performance under the direction of the Russos.

Avengers: Infinity War comes out on May 4th, 2018.

"When everyone has a gun, no one is in control."

An amazingly fun red-band trailer has been released for a new action film called Free Fire. This movie looks freakin' awesome! It's got a ridiculous amount of action mixed together with some hilarious humor, and I can't wait to see it!

The story is set in Boston in 1978, and it centers on a meeting in a deserted warehouse between two gangs. As you'll see, it escalates into a crazy shootout and a game of survival.

The film comes from director Ben Wheatley (High Rise, A Field in England, Kill List) and producer Martin Scorsese, and it has a badass cast that includes Brie Larson, Cillian Murphy, Armie Hammer, Sharlto Copley, Enzo Cilenti, Sam Riley, and Michael Smiley.

The movie is set to be released in the U.S. sometime next year.

Neill Blomkamp Releases Creature Design for a Secret Film Project He's Developing

neill-blomkamp-releases-creature-design-for-a-secret-film-project-hes-developing

Neill Blomkamp (Section 9, Elysium, Chappie) has released an intriguing photo featuring a creature design for a mysterious new film project that he's currently developing. The last project the director was working on was Alien 5, but that was put on hold, and he makes it very clear that this is not a part of that production.

As you can see, this creature design features a strangely disfigured face. It looks like it definitely has some human features, and it could be mixed in with something alien looking. We don't know if it's alien or supernatural, but whatever it is, also has some gashes on his face.

I'm intrigued by the design, and I'm curious to see what exactly Blomkamp is cooking up. I'm sure it's an another original story that he's put together. One thing that I love about Blomkamp is that he keeps creating original concepts and stories. However, I do wish he would have been able to move forward on his Halo and Alien films.

Working on new things. Currently not alien

Alan Moore Announces Retirement From Comics

$

Alan Moore has a few projects he has to finish up, and then he's done with comics. The Guardian writes the comic book icon announced his retirement at a press event in London.

"...There are a couple of issues of an Avatar [Press] book that I am doing at the moment, part of the HP Lovecraft work I’ve been working on recently. Me and Kevin will be finishingCinema Purgatorio and we’ve got about one more book, a final book of League of Extraordinary Gentlemen to complete. After that, although I may do the odd little comics piece at some point in the future, I am pretty much done with comics.”

Moore says the decision comes from the fact that he has become complacent in the genre and wants to move onto other mediums.

“So, the things that interest me at the moment are the things I don’t know if I can do, like films, where I haven’t got a clue what I am doing, or giant literary novels. Things I wasn’t sure I’d even have the stamina to finish … I know I am able to do anything anyone is capable of doing in the comic book medium. I don’t need to prove anything to myself or anyone else. Whereas these other fields are much more exciting to me. I will always revere comics as a medium. It is a wonderful medium.”

Of course being controversial as always, Moore had a few things to say about the state of superheroes. Among the stuff I didn't like (mainly his criticism of adults reading comics when they're meant for kids), Moore did make a poignant statement about the current state of superheroes that is thought-provoking, to say the least.

“The superhero movies – characters that were invented by Jack Kirby in the 1960s or earlier – I have great love for those characters as they were to me when I was a 13-year-old boy. They were brilliantly designed and created characters. But they were for 50 years ago. I think this century needs, deserves, its own culture. It deserves artists that are actually going to attempt to say things that are relevant to the times we are actually living in. That’s a longwinded way of me saying I am really, really sick of Batman.”

That's an incredibly valid point that I think consumers are more or less starting to show with their wallets. Sure we still show out in droves for the main attractions, but there is definitely a reason Guardians of the Galaxy blew up the way it did. We want new heroes to follow and new origins to learn. Whether that comes in the form of giving more attention to obscure '80s heroes or creating new heroes entirely is on DC and Marvel.

Going back to the news at hand, whether you love or hate him you can't deny Moore's influence on comics and superheroes as a whole. It'll be hard to fill that gap once he's officially gone.
