Channing Tatum Enlists For KINGSMAN: THE GOLDEN CIRCLE

Looks like Kingsman: The Golden Circle has enlisted its first (and only?) down-home Southern boy.

Last night, Channing Tatum tweeted that he was joining the movie, and he also shared a new poster (it took me a second to even realize it was a new poster):

THR reports that he was offered multiple roles in the movie, and it's unclear which one he's chosen. He could be playing anything from a supporting part to a cameo, and might even be playing himself. This is sheer speculation on my part, but I'm guessing he has a decent-sized role as one of the American Kingsman members, because I'm not sure that the studio would choose him to debut a new poster if he was just popping up in a quick cameo.

Julianne Moore, Halle Berry, Pedro Pascal, and Elton John are joining returning cast members Taron Egerton and (presumably) Colin Firth for Matthew Vaughn's sequel, which hits theaters on June 16, 2017.

Now if you'll excuse me, I'm going to spend the rest of the day with this song stuck in my head:

THE MAGNIFICENT SEVEN Remake Looks Like a FAST & FURIOUS Western

I'm a huge fan of the original 1960 version of The Magnificent Seven and I was kinda weirded out by the fact that Sony Pictures is remaking it. They got a great team of talent to make the movie though, so there is a chance that the film could turn out well.

The film was directed by Antoine Fuqua, who showed up at CinemaCon to talk about the film and present the first footage from it. Chris Pratt was with him as well because he's one of many stars in the movie. It's got a great cast that includes Denzel Washington, Ethan Hawke, Matt Bomer, Vincent D'Onofrio, Byung-hun Lee, Peter Sarsgaard, Vinnie Jones, Haley Bennett, and more.

When talking about the film, Pratt said he's "always wanted to do a western," and went on to talk about his character, describing him as "a gambler," and "one of the first people to join the seven." He also says the movie is "Fucking awesome."

The footage screened at the event was very fast-paced and extremely action-packed. As I was watching it I kept thinking to myself, "This is a Fast & Furious-style western," and I don't mean that as a bad thing. The movie looks like it's going to be incredibly fun.

The footage begins with Denzel Washington sporting a mustache and he guns down a man in a saloon. He says, "A man carries a gun, he intends to use it." He then proceeds to shoot down bartenders and other customers. Pratt's character is sitting in the bar, but this bloody violence doesn't seem to phase him. In fact, he cracks a joke about being upset that he won't be getting his drink from the bartender who was just killed. Washington asks Pratt if he wants to go on a mission with him. Pratt asks if it's dangerous and Washington tells him it's impossible. Pratt smiles and says he's in. The two then proceed to recruit other people with special skills for this mission to protect a town from being overrun by a group of criminals. We see a few more action shots of people being gunned down. One man gets killed in the street and the dead man's wife ends up joining the team for revenge purposes. Some of the other members of the team consist of a sharpshooter, a gambler, a tracker, a Comanche warrior, a martial arts expert, and more. They are prepping to take on an army and they are prepared to die for their cause. A couple of other clips include Pratt finding dynamite and blowing something up as well as the team forcing a sheriff to take off his badge.

The movie is set to be released on September 23, 2016 and I'll be looking forward to it. This film looks cool. I doubt it will be as good as the original, but it's going to be a blast to watch.

Shane Black Says THE PREDATOR Will Be Set in Present Day

Shane Black has grand plans for The Predator. After turning down a writing gig (but accepting a supporting role) in the original movie, he's now co-writing and directing a new movie featuring the alien hunter, and he gave a brief update about it in a new interview with Collider.

I’m working on the script, and barring an act of God, a safe from the sky, there’s nothing that suggests it won’t be the next thing, and I’m getting more and more excited day by day. I mean, there’s great Predator movies, but to actually play with the idea of making it an event, not necessarily in scale—it doesn’t have to be huge—but it just has to feel like a Predator movie you want to see in the summer and line up for it. And that’s what we’re going for. Let’s get back to the excitement and innovation of that original movie where it felt fresh. I just want to find a way to make it feel fresh and that’s what we’re trying to do.

As for whether or not Arnold Schwarzenegger will return to reprise his role of Dutch from the original movie, Black says they haven't discussed it yet:

BLACK: We have not talked about it, which is good because I’m not supposed to talk about it anyway. Not supposed to talk about details of the script. And I shouldn’t.
It won’t get you into trouble.
BLACK: [mock laughter] Haha! Trouble! Who cares! I think it’s something we’re looking into, and as this thing evolves and takes on more of a shape, we’ll figure out how best to honor the tradition of what is really a remarkable first movie and even parts of the rest of them as well.

They are still pretty far away from shooting, so it makes sense that they don't quite know if there's a place in the story for Arnie yet. (I'd put money on him showing up in some capacity, though.)

And finally, Black spoke about the new movie's setting:

Is it using the real time since the first film?
BLACK: This one will be set in present day.
Ah, so there’s a possibility.
BLACK: Yes, it’s set in present day.

So that will be a thirty-one year gap between the original and this film, which could provide some interesting opportunities for storytelling, especially if Dutch is involved. What has he been doing for all this time? Is he gearing up for a war that only he knows is coming? Hopefully we'll find out.

Side note: here's an interesting connection I just made about Black and the recent teaser poster for The Predator that came out a little while back. The tagline on that poster is "You'll Never See Him Coming," which, if you'll remember, was one of the centerpiece lines for Ben Kingsley in the trailers for Iron Man 3, which Black also wrote and directed.

The Predator hits theaters on March 2, 2018.

Sony Pictures' Animated SPIDER-MAN Film Will Break New Ground

During Sony Pictures' CinemaCon presentation they not only announced the official title for Marvel's Spider-Man: Homecoming film, but they also talked a little bit about the animated Spider-Man film coming that is currently being developed by Phil Lord and Chris Miller.

I was already curious to see what Sony was planning for this animated film, and although they didn't show us anything except for the image above, they did say that it will break new ground.

Sony Pictures Animation president Kristine Belson talked briefly about the film, saying that it will offer fans “a vision of Spider-man that will take your breath away.” Not only that, but she also says that “conceptually and visually, it will break new ground for the superhero genre.”

Those are bold claims, but I'm definitely intrigued by her words. We're just going to have to wait until 2018 to be able to see what exactly she is talking about. I imagine they have created some new, innovative animation techniques that will give the film a look unlike we've ever seen before, which would be pretty cool.

Sony is obviously excited about this production. We don't know anything about the story, but it's an independent story that will take place outside of the MCU. The movie is scheduled to be released on December 21st, 2018, and Sony head Tom Rothman concluded saying it's going to be “fucking awesome.”

10 Movie Scenes That Formed The Basis For Internet Memes

If you've visited Facebook over the past, oh, let's say five years, you've probably noticed the proliferation of internet memes. Sure, they were always popular in certain circles online, but their customizable and sharable nature has pushed them out of niche culture and into the mainstream. We live in a world in which Rick Astley actually Rickrolled the entire nation during the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade in 2008. That's crazy.

You all probably know the origins of many of these, but WatchMojo put together a quick video that shows the movie scenes that inspired many of the internet's most popular memes. If you're new to the whole meme thing (hi, Mom), this will at least give you a baseline for where this stuff started.

Mark Rylance Jacks In For Steven Spielberg's READY PLAYER ONE

$

It was only yesterday I was talking about how it looks like Steven Spielberg has found a new collaborator in Oscar-winning actor Mark Rylance, who broke out in Bridge of Spies, plays the title character in The BFG, and just joined Spielberg's The Kidnapping of Edgardo Mortara. Now that creative partnership has been cemented even further.

THR reports that Rylance has also joined Spielberg's next project, Ready Player One. Rylance will play James Halliday, the enigmatic founder of the OASIS, a virtual game world where players are searching for the easter egg Halliday leaves behind when he dies. In Willy Wonka fashion, whoever finds the egg receives Halliday's multi-billion dollar fortune and assumes control of the OASIS itself.

Early rumors indicated that Spielberg was trying to lure the former Wonka himself, actor Gene Wilder, out of retirement to play this role, and I have to admit this is a case where rumors got me excited about something that ended up not happening, and now I'm a little bummed about it. That goes to show that we shouldn't put too much stock in a lot of early reports like that because there's still plenty of time for things to chance. I'm sure Rylance will make a fine cinematic Halliday, but seeing Wilder in that role would have been amazing.

I read Ready Player One a couple of months ago, but totally forgot that Halliday's full name is James Donovan Halliday. James Donovan was Tom Hanks' character's name in Bridge of Spies, which was Rylance's breakout movie. Weird.

There was some question as to whether or not Rylance would be able to star in both this and Christopher Nolan's war film Dunkirk, but Warner Bros. figured out a way for the scheduling to work. At this pace, it will only take another year or two before Rylance becomes the actor with whom Spielberg has worked the most.

Ready Player One stars Tye Sheridan, Olivia Cooke, Ben Mendelsohn, and Simon Pegg, and the film arrives in theaters on March 30, 2018.

At once wildly original and stuffed with irresistible nostalgia, READY PLAYER ONE is a spectacularly genre-busting, ambitious, and charming debut—part quest novel, part love story, and part virtual space opera set in a universe where spell-slinging mages battle giant Japanese robots, entire planets are inspired by Blade Runner, and flying DeLoreans achieve light speed.
It’s the year 2044, and the real world is an ugly place.
Like most of humanity, Wade Watts escapes his grim surroundings by spending his waking hours jacked into the OASIS, a sprawling virtual utopia that lets you be anything you want to be, a place where you can live and play and fall in love on any of ten thousand planets.
And like most of humanity, Wade dreams of being the one to discover the ultimate lottery ticket that lies concealed within this virtual world. For somewhere inside this giant networked playground, OASIS creator James Halliday has hidden a series of fiendish puzzles that will yield massive fortune—and remarkable power—to whoever can unlock them.
For years, millions have struggled fruitlessly to attain this prize, knowing only that Halliday’s riddles are based in the pop culture he loved—that of the late twentieth century. And for years, millions have found in this quest another means of escape, retreating into happy, obsessive study of Halliday’s icons. Like many of his contemporaries, Wade is as comfortable debating the finer points of John Hughes’s oeuvre, playing Pac-Man, or reciting Devo lyrics as he is scrounging power to run his OASIS rig.
And then Wade stumbles upon the first puzzle.
Suddenly the whole world is watching, and thousands of competitors join the hunt—among them certain powerful players who are willing to commit very real murder to beat Wade to this prize. Now the only way for Wade to survive and preserve everything he knows is to win. But to do so, he may have to leave behind his oh-so-perfect virtual existence and face up to life—and love—in the real world he’s always been so desperate to escape.
A world at stake.
A quest for the ultimate prize.
Are you ready?

GAME OF THRONES Featurette Goes In-Depth With The VFX Team

HBO's Game of Thrones has to be the biggest, most expensive show on television, and you can see practically every dollar the network spends up on the screen when the episodes air. It's a remarkable series, not only in terms of storytelling, but in the sheer scale of what they've been able to do in the five seasons thus far, and of course season six is set to be even bigger.

A new behind-the-scenes featurette goes in-depth with the visual effects team as they talk about the challenges of keeping everything straight as the show's scope increases. It's different from the normal VFX reels we've written about before, and a cool look at the guys who are actually in charge of many of the series' most iconic moments.

I can't wait for this show to come back! Luckily the wait is almost over — Game of Thrones returns to HBO on April 24th.

Robert Downey Jr. Talks About Why He's Excited for the New Spider-Man

Robert Downey Jr. appeared on Jimmy Kimmel Live last night and talked all about Captain America: Civil War! He talked about Tom Holland playing Spider-Man, and how excited he is to see a Spider-Man that's the same character he experienced growing up!

This is an important point to make for the older crowd. Someone my age typically attributes their knowledge of Spider-Man to the Toby Maguire portrayal in Sam Raimi's films, even more so than the animated series of the '90s. I've never experienced the "classic Spider-Man" in earnest, so it'll be interesting to see the classic suit, younger actor, and all around more Marvel presentation of the character!

James Cameron Announces Four AVATAR Sequels and Reveals Logo

During 20th Century Fox's CinemaCon presentation, James Cameron offered an update on his Avatar franchise, and announced that he is now going to make four Avatar sequels! The last we heard there was only three, I imagine next year he'll announce four more. I'm convinced that Cameron will be making these Avatar films throughout the rest of his career.

Cameron revealed that the sequels are being created as films that will stand on their own so they will tell individual stories that, together, will “form a complete saga”.

The first of the Avatar sequels is set to start shooting in New Zealand this month, and it's slated to arrive in theaters on December of 2018. The following films will be released 2020, 2022, and 2023. I'm really excited and curious to see what Cameron does with these films. Maybe we'll see some of the concept art shown during the presentation pop up online sometime soon. If so, we'll make sure to post it for you.

Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldana, Stephen Lang, and Sigourney Weaver are confirmed to reprise their roles. The films are being written by Cameron along with Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver, Josh Friedman, and Shane Salerno.

You can find the logo for the upcoming Avatar saga above thanks to comingsoon.

EW's CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR Preview Gives Us First Look at Baron Zemo

Entertainment Weekly’s Summer Movie Preview issue features Captain America: Civil War covers (there are four versions, each a different segment of a panoramic view of the big airport battle) and new scoops and stills from the film inside, including the first look at Baron Zemo. He looks like if Daniel Bruhl were in middle management at a small regional company. Like, he could be the Michael Scott of Dunder Mifflin’s Bremen office. I am super excited to see what Bruhl brings to the role, though. He is one of my favorite actors, and I am hoping he proves a formidable villain.

The images also include Black Panther looking like a boss in a very well-tailored suit, Falcon in battle, and a bunch of the Avengers sitting around a conference table. I am assuming that is the scene where they get yelled at for causing too much destruction.

Basically, this movie looks amazing, and I am increasingly angry that it isn’t out already. I guess we’ll all just have to try to muddle through until May 6 when we can see what on earth Baron Zemo has to do with all of our favorite heroes beating the crap out of each other.

New STAR TREK Series Rumored to Take Place Before THE NEXT GENERATION

Big rumors about the new Star Trek series coming courtesy of BirthMoviesDeath. Someone over there has it on good authority that the exclusively streaming series will take place in the classic continuity, and happen just prior to Star Trek: The Next Generation.

More specifically, the show is meant to bridge the gap between the original series and TNG! If true, that will be some very exciting news to fans, and some big shoes to fill for showrunner Bryan Fuller!

Another rumor, but not as heavily confirmed as the first, is that we will once again see Klingons as villains for the first time in a long time! While I am excited for the new series, as a TNG fan it will be a bit of a bummer to see a less diverse ship in terms of species!

I know I swore I wouldn't pay to see this new series, but this new information has me very curious!

Tessa Thompson’s Role in THOR: RAGNAROK Reportedly Revealed, and It’s Awesome if True

Director Taika Waititi is hard at work prepping to shoot Thor: Ragnarok which will see Thor (Chris Hemsworth) an Bruce Banner/Hulk (Mark Ruffalo) embark on an adventure in Asgard and possibly throughout the rest of the cosmos. They will be joined by Cate Blanchett who is most likely taking on the role of Hela and Tom Hiddleston who will be back as Loki.

tessa-thompsons-role-in-thor-ragnarok-reportedly-revealed-and-its-awesome-if-true6

Creed co-star Tessa Thompson was recently cast in a mysterious role in the movie, and now thanks to Latino Review it looks like we might know who she will be playing.

SPOILERS ahead!

According to a previous report, Hela unleashes hell on Asgard and Thor attempts to stop her. In the process, Hela destroys his hammer and murders Heimdall. They go on to say that there will be an epic battle at the end of the film that will feature "an army of the dead commanded by the villainess doing battle with good Valkyries from Valhalla and the souls of the righteous fallen, including Heimdall."

That just sounds AWESOME! Well, Latino-Review now reports that that Thompson will play a big part in this epic battle as they say she has been cast in the role of the MCU’s version of Valkyrie! Her part was previously described as ”a kind of superhero and will appear in other Marvel films as well." So there’s a chance that this could be legit. The report explains and speculates, saying:

In the comics, this character's real name is Brunnhilde, and she is chosen by Odin to lead the Valkyrior, the Asgardians who roam battlefields, and select the honorable dead for Valhalla. The title of Valkyrie just applies to whomever leads the Valkyries though, so we may or may not be seeing her before she takes on said title. Either way, this character aligns with the report, and could very well appear again in AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR.

I hope all of this is true because it would be incredible, and it would take the story arc of Thor to new epic levels that we haven’t seen before. The more I learn about this movie, the more excited I am to see it! If Thompson is in fact playing this character, there’s no doubt she’ll be awesome.

BATMAN: THE KILLING JOKE Animated Film Confirmed for R-Rating

We've been hearing for some time now that Warner Bros. Animation and DC Entertainment's animated adaptation of Batman: The Killing Joke could end up being rated R. The story arc that it's based on is extremely dark, and I didn't think that they would be able to tell that story faithfully and not get slapped with an R-rating. Everyone at the studio who worked on it seemed to be expecting that.

Well, Entertainment Weekly has confirmed that the film has officially received an R-rating. Sam Register, president of Warner Bros. Animation & Warner Digital Series, said:

“From the start of production, we encouraged producer Bruce Timm and our team at Warner Bros. Animation to remain faithful to the original story — regardless of the eventual MPAA rating. ’The Killing Joke’ is revered by the fans, particularly for its blunt, often-shocking adult themes and situations. We felt it was our responsibility to present our core audience — the comics-loving community — with an animated film that authentically represented the tale they know all too well.”

The magazine goes on to say that there are no plans for a PG-13 version of this film. This is the first animated film in the DC Universe series that has received an R-rating. I'm sure fans of the Alan Moore comic will be pleased.

What makes this project even more incredible is the fact that Kevin Conroy is reprising the role of Batman/Bruce Wayne and Mark Hamill will be back as The Joker. They will be joined by Tara Strong as Batgirl/Barbara Gordon.

Batman: The Killing Joke is being directed by Sam Liu, and I'm excited to see if he and his team were able to pull this off when it premieres at Comic-Con this year. To see some footage from the series and catch up on the news about it, click here.

Jason Statham in Talks to Take on a Really Big Shark in MEG

Meg has been a project that has been floating around Hollywood since 2006. It keeps trying to get traction, but for some reason it keeps failing to launch. Lately, it has found the traction that it needs and has even got its lead in place. If you haven’t heard about Meg, here's a brief synopsis:

A deep sea submersible pilot revisits his past fears in the Mariana Trench, and accidentally unleashes the seventy foot ancestor of the Great White Shark believed to be extinct.

According to Deadline action star Jason Statham is in negotiations to take on the Mega Shark film:

The Jon Turbeltaub-directed movie Meg has a big shark, and now it has a big star. Jason Statham is in negotiations to star in the adaptation of the novel of the same name that Warner Bros is moving forward with in conjunction with China-based Gravity. Lorenzo di Bonaventura is producing along with Belle Avery and Colin Wilson.

It is always cool to see Statham take the lead in a film. He has got the action chops and probably one of the coolest voices in Hollywood. I would totally let him narrate my life.

There isn’t a release date set for this movie yet, but I am getting excited to see it.

Kevin Feige Explains Marvel’s Approach to Using a Younger SPIDER-MAN

$

0

I have no doubt that fans are going to fall in love with Tom Holland’s Spider-Man in Captain America: Civil War. You are going to get to see about 30 minutes of him in Civil War, and a lot of that is him in action fighting alongside team Iron Man. It’s definitely going to leave you wanting more, and we’ll get it in Spider-Man: Homecoming.

This version of the Web-Slinger is much younger than any Spider-Man we’ve seen yet. He’s said to be inspired by Brian Michael Bendis Ultimate Spider-Man. Director Jon Watts, Marvel, and Sony wanted to do something completely different with the character this time around, so they’ve actually cast a young actor to play a young high school aged Spider-Man.

While talking to /Film about the character and the importance of making him so young, Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige said:

“We wanted to show a much younger Spidey, in contrast to our other heroes, a Spidey who — as was he was in the early ’60s, when he was first created in the Marvel bullpen — was totally different from the Marvel heroes. The other heroes don’t have to worry about homework. They don’t have to worry about being home at a certain time. That’s what makes Spider-Man Spider-Man. We also wanted to let audiences know he’s already Spider-Man; he’s been Spider-Man for a little while when we meet him. There wasn’t the expectation we’d tell an origin. I think everybody in the world already knows.”

At the recent press conference for the film that I attended earlier this week, Feige shared the process of bringing Spider-Man into the MCU and recounted Robert Downey Jr.’s reaction when he told him about it:

“I called Robert relatively early saying, ‘I think there might be a chance we’re going to get Spider-Man in this movie.’ His reaction was just like a fanboy. He was unbelievably excited for what that could mean to this movie. Two weeks after that, we pulled it down to about five finalists. I asked him, ‘If we bring them to Atlanta, do you mind reading with all five?’ And he did. We pulled it down a little bit more. That’s how Tom came to the top. Then Tom and one other person came back and did more of a stunt test. Chris was very gracious to read opposite of him. It was fun to see Robert was invested, and to see Tom react to Robert, which was not dissimilar to how Peter was reacting to Tony.”

As far as the collaboration between Disney and Sony has been going in bringing the character to life, Feige said it’s been smooth sailing so far:

“You’re dealing with two very powerful studios that have their own interest. It’s a testament to Amy Pascal, who’s producing the film with us, and Tom Rothman, who runs Sony, and to all the people that run Disney. They realized the best thing for the character was to do this. It was great. The standalone Spider-Man is Sony Pictures’ film, but they’ve engaged us in producing it. So far, so good.”

Hopefully, they are able to happily work with each other for many years to come. I’m sure that as long as they are both making lots of money, they’ll be happy. Spider-Man: Homecoming opens in theaters July 7th, 2017.
