Bryan Singer Shares A Look at The New Quicksilver Scene in X-MEN: APOCALYPSE

If you're a fan of the X-Men films and you aren't following director Bryan Singer on Instagram, you're missing out. He's in the midst of production on X-Men: Apocalypse right now, and he's been sharing photos from the set on a regular basis.

Evan Peters' Quicksilver will return in this film after being one of the highlights of Singer's excellent X-Men: Days of Future Past, and now the director has shared a brief look at the speedster's new sequence:

Just another day at the office. #Quicksilver #Xmen #XmenApocalypse

A photo posted by Bryan Singer (@bryanjaysinger) on

Peters isn't present in the photo, but with floating people (and furniture) hanging out on set, it looks like we're in for another visually stunning sequence as Quicksilver blazes through the room. The way Singer successfully incorporated humor into the scene last time makes me hope he does a similar thing again here, and I'm also hoping Peters ends up with a little bit more screen time this time around.

X-Men: Apocalypse opens in theaters on May 27th, 2016.

SyFy Making HYPERION Event Series With Bradley Cooper and Todd Phillips

Bradley Cooper has been wanting to produce for a while now, and he and his Hangover director Todd Phillips have formed a production company with some pretty cool projects coming up. But I don't think any of them will have the impact on the geek sci-fi community that this will: THR says the duo is teaming with Graham King (Argo) to produce an event series adaptation of Dan Simmons' Hyperion novels for the Syfy Channel.

I haven't read Hyperion myself (I'm still trying to catch up with A Song of Ice and Fire), but from seeing the reaction to this news, it sounds like it's a masterpiece of the genre and people are very excited that it's getting a limited series treatment instead of trying to fit the entire story into one or two films. Here's the description of the upcoming series:

Set on the eve of Armageddon with the entire galaxy at war, Hyperion is the story of seven pilgrims who set forth on a voyage to seek the answers to the unsolved riddles of their lives. Each carries a desperate hope and a terrible secret — while one may hold the fate of humanity in his hands.

Boardwalk Empire's Itamar Moses is co-producing and writing the screenplay. As THR notes, Syfy has been working hard to get science fiction back in the popular consciousness by producing shows like 12 Monkeys, Childhood's End, Brave New WorldKrypton, Incorporated, The Magicians, Dark Matter, Hunters, The Expanse, Z Nation, and more over the past few years. I think fans are going to be excited to see what they can do with Hyperion, one of the most beloved books of the genre.

What do you all think?

Dark Horse Announces Mirror's Edge: Exordium

While we only have a few days more to find out about Faith's next video game adventure, Dark Horse and DICE are helping to fill the void with Mirror's Edge: Exordium. The book will spotlight how Faith came to be in a 6 issue format. As it's been a while since we last saw Faith, this should be a good way to introduce her to a legion of new fans who don't really know what Mirror's Edge is about. The book is being written by Christofer Emgard, the narrative director at DICE, with an in-house art team, including Mattias Haggstrom, Robert Sammelin, Henrick Sahlstrom, Erik Persson, and Emgard himself.

Comics based on game franchises are starting to pick up in quality, and if the art team utilizes the format to its utmost potential, this could be a damn cool looking book. We'll just have to see when the book releases on September 9th.

Chris Hemsworth Cast in GHOSTBUSTERS Reboot as the Receptionist

Chris Hemsworth (Thor) has been cast in director Paul Feig's female Ghostbusters reboot, and he'll be taking on the role of the receptionist. That puts a little more of a twist on things because I've never seen a receptionist look like Chris Hemsworth. The director made the announcement with the following tweet:

Hemsworth will join the previously cast Melissa McCarthy, Kristen Wiig, Kate McKinnon and Leslie Jones. There's no doubt that Feig and Hemsworth are going to have some fun with this bit of casting.

I still have my reservations about this Ivan Reitman-produced reboot, but I'll hold off on any more bashing until I see some actual footage from the movie. There are no story details yet other than it will center around a group of new female Ghostbusters busting ghosts.

According to Variety, the studio went to Hemsworth very early on for one of the major male roles, but he passed on it because he thought the role to be too small. So Sony sent the script back to be reworked, and they beefed up the part. It was obviously to Hemsworth's liking, because he took it.

Production is set to start later this summer, and the film is scheduled to hit theaters on July 22nd, 2016.

Legendary Actor Christopher Lee Dies at Age 93

Legendary actor Christopher Lee has passed away at the age of 93. According to reports, his death occurred on Sunday morning.

Lee was apparently hospitalized at London’s Chelsea and Westminster Hospital for respiratory problems and heart failure before his death. The delay in reporting the news to the public was out of respect for the wishes of Lee’s wife of 50 years to inform his family first.

Lee has appeared in over 280 films in his acting career, which is incredibly impressive. He definitely left his mark on the world. His career took off in 1947 after appearing in a gothic romance film called Corridor of Mirrors. Then it really exploded in the 1950s when he started getting work in the horror films that were being produced by Hammer.

The first movie he did for them was The Curse of Frankenstein, and shortly after took on the iconic role of Dracula in the 1958 film. He reprised the role in the 1965 sequel Dracula: Prince of Darkness and five more films after that! The guy made a badass Dracula. Lee also starred in Hammer’s The Mummy and Rasputin, the Mad Monk.

I could go on and name a ton of other films that he been in over the years including The Wicker Man and The Man with the Golden Gun, and his run as Sherlock Holmes in which he starred in Sherlock Holmes and the Deadly Necklace, The Hound of the Baskervilles, and The Private Life of Sherlock Holmes

His popularity resurged in 2001 with a whole new younger fan base grew when he was cast as the wizard Saruman in Peter Jackson’s The Lord of the Rings trilogy, a role he reprised in the most recent Hobbit trilogy. George Lucas cast hum as the villainous Count Dooku in 2002’s Star Wars: Episode II - Attack of the Clones and Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith.

He also found work with director Tim Burton, who is a long-time fan of the actor, and he appeared in films such as Sleepy Hollow, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Alice in Wonderland, and Dark Shadows. Burton even presented Lee with a BAFTA Academy Fellowship in 2011.

On top of all that, the guy was doing heavy metal Christmas music! Lee’s final film was the fantasy Angels in Notting Hill, and it has not been released yet.

I was introduced to Lee's work as at a young age. The first movie I ever saw him in was in Hammer's Dracula. The guy scarred the hell out of me. Lee was an incredible actor, who made some awesome films and entertained audiences around the world. It is sad to hear that he has passed on, but he left behind an amazing legacy.

Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family and friends.

The casting of Jon Bernthal as The Punisher in Daredevil Season 2 is one of the greatest casting decisions that Marvel could have made for the character. He’s gonna be freakin’ awesome. As a tribute to the actor landing the role, Boss Logic created a couple pieces of art giving us a look at what Bernthal could look like as Frank Castle, and it's badass!

first-images-from-kung-fu-panda-3-reveal-new-characters

DreamWorks Animation has released the first three images from their upcoming Kung Fu Panda 3. They reveal a couple of new characters that will be joining franchise including Bryan Cranston, who will play Li, the father of Jack Black’s character, Po. There’s also a character named Mei Mei, an aspiring panda ribbon dancer, and she is voiced by Rebel Wilson. The two characters live in a secret panda village where Po is reunited with his panda people after a chance run-in with his dad.

Co-director Jennifer Yuh Nelson talks about the panda village:

“That is the most shockingly adorable place. There are nurseries filled with gaggles of baby pandas. A lot of how the pandas play was inspiration for the movie.”

The film’s story sees Po facing a few different kinds of different threats. One deals with a supernatural villain named Kai, who poses a threat to the village and the world. The other hits a little closer to the heart as the reunion of Po and his biological father causes concern with Po’s adopted duck father Mr. Ping. Then there's Mei Mei. She is the first female of his own species that Po has been around, and Black says that the character is “a little freaked out” about it.

Also lending their voices to the new chapter in the franchise include Gary Oldman, Dustin Hoffman, David Cross, Angelina Jolie, Michelle Yeoh, Mads Mikkelsen, Danny McBride, Lucy Liu, Seth Rogen, Jackie Chan, and James Hong.

The movie is set to hit theaters January 29th, 2016.

New STAR WARS BATTLEFRONT Screenshot Shows Rebels in Action on Hoth

A new screenshot from Star Wars Battlefront has surfaced, and it features a squadron of Rebel soldiers defending the Echo base on Hoth from the Empire. My favorite part of the photo is the Quarren soldier in the back walking confidently upright into battle blasting away like a badass who refuses to die.

This game is going to be ridiculously spectacular! I can’t wait to see more of it at E3 next week. Hoth is one of the four planets that have been revealed for the 12 multiplayer maps in the sci-fi shooter, alongside Sullust, Endor, and Tatooine.

You know what you should do? You should watch the trailer for it again to remind yourself of what's coming. The game is supposed to be released on November 17th of this year.

JURASSIC PARK 8-Bit Cinema

I've been hearing nothing but great things about Jurassic World, which hits theaters this weekend! Sounds like this is the best film in the franchise since the Jurassic Park was released in 1993. I'm so excited to take the fam out to see it!

While we all wait to see the movie, CineFix has released a new episode of their 8-Bit Cinema series featuring Jurassic Park. This movie has seen its fair share of video game adaptations over the years, but my favorite has to be the one released on Sega Genesis in 1993.

Here's a note that came along with the video:

Okay! OKAY! This one is pretty much 32-bit! Haha but CineFix presents Jurassic Park retold via old-school 8-bit (and mostly 32 bit ;) game tech. No quarters, controllers, or genetic engineering required!
We’re guessing the excitement for Jurassic World has gotten you nostalgic for the original Jurassic Park, right? Why not also indulge your nostalgia for old-school video games at the same time? Jurassic Park was on the cutting edge of CGI back in 1993… we give the dinosaurs a treatment that’s a little less ahead of its time.

Thus, we present Jurassic Park in the form of an 8 bit video game!

Trailer for the Lance Armstrong Biopic THE PROGRAM with Ben Foster

The first trailer has been released for Ben Foster's Lance Armstrong biopic The Program, which was directed by Stephen Frears. The story of Lance Armstrong is going to make for an intriguing movie. It's stunning to see how this guy's life played out. The film loos like it was incredibly well made, and it also might end up being the best performance that we've seen from Foster in his career so far. I've always kind of thought he was an underrated actor, but that might change after this movie.

He was one of the biggest sports heroes of our time: Lance Armstrong has revolutionized in the nineties with his team the sport of cycling, he won seven times alone in the Tour de France. With his fight against cancer, he became the charismatic icon of millions. But then the truth of his success is revealed: The sports journalist David Walsh covers a system of lies and cheating on … After “The Queen”, director Stephen Frears focuses again a cult figure of the present and shows how close greatness and megalomania often to each other. A fascinating portrait with US actor Ben Foster as Armstrong worthy of an Oscar occupied.

The movie also features a great cast that includes Chris O’Dowd, Guillaume Canet, Jesse Plemons, Dustin Hoffmam, and Lee Pace. There is currently no release date set in the U.S.

You've got to check out this wildly insane mashup art that features several of the Adventure Time characters as characters from Mad Max: Fury Road! We've got the Ice King as Immortan Joe, Marceline is rocking out as the Doof Warrior, Princess Bubblegum was transformed into Imperator Furiosa, Lemongrab is one of the War Boys, and then of course Finn is Mad Max. I'm happy this exists, now we need to see a Max Max-style episode in the animated series! You can also purchase prints from his website if you want.

Age of Apocalypse #1 Preview

Battleworld is getting mighty full these days, but when it comes to Age of Apocalypse, I will always be interested. The creative team of Fabian Nicieza and Gerardo Sandoval are taking us back to En Sabah Nur's grim reality, where he is firmly in control. The X-Men are down but not out, and have a ray of hope in a mutant named Cypher, which they must keep out of Apocalypse's hands.

You can see a preview of the book below, and I really couldn't be happier with the art style. With how dark this universe can be, you need an artist and a colorist that can bring some color to the proceedings, otherwise it all ends up as one big palette of black and gray.

I'll also be interested to see how this ties in (or if it does at all) with Rick Remender's X-Force run, in which X-Force came in contact with the X-Men from AOA, and how things ended there. I guess we will find out when it releases on July 8th. You can catch the array of variants below as well, and that Skottie Young version is going up on my wall.

ZOOTOPIA Teaser Trailer: Walt Disney Animation Returns After A Year Off

Much like Pixar last year, Walt Disney Animation has taken 2015 off and won't release a film this year. They'll return in March of next year with Zootopia, a new film starring Jason Bateman and Ginnifer Goodwin as anthropomorphized animals living in a world in which humans never existed.

Bateman narrates the film's first teaser trailer, which you can see below this official synopsis:

The modern mammal metropolis of Zootopia is a city like no other. Comprised of habitat neighborhoods like ritzy Sahara Square and frigid Tundratown, it’s a melting pot where animals from every environment live together—a place where no matter what you are, from the biggest elephant to the smallest shrew, you can be anything. But when optimistic Officer Judy Hopps arrives, she discovers that being the first bunny on a police force of big, tough animals isn’t so easy. Determined to prove herself, she jumps at the opportunity to crack a case, even if it means partnering with a fast-talking, scam-artist fox, Nick Wilde, to solve the mystery. Walt Disney Animation Studios’ “Zootopia,” a comedy-adventure directed by Byron Howard (“Tangled,” “Bolt”) and Rich Moore (“Wreck-It Ralph,” “The Simpsons”) and co-directed by Jared Bush (“Penn Zero: Part-Time Hero”), opens in theaters on March 4, 2016.

Top 10 Christopher Lee Films Tribute Video

top-10-christopher-lee-films-tribute-video

As you've probably all heard by now, actor Christopher Lee passed away this past Sunday. He left behind a legacy of film work though that will live on and keep his spirit alive. He made over 280 films in the course of his career, and there are still movies out there that he starred in that a lot of us might not have seen yet. It would be incredibly fun to look at his previous work and start watching movies of his that I've never seen before.

Back in 2013, IGN released a video the breaks down the Top 10 films of Christopher Lee. This is a great place to start for anyone looking to familiarize themselves with the movies of the legendary actor. There's were a few of them in here that I have yet to see. I guess I'll have to remedy that.

What are some of your favorite Christopher Lee movies?

Matthew Vaughn May Return To Direct KINGSMAN: THE SECRET SERVICE Sequel

$

Matthew Vaughn's Kingsman: The Secret Service is one of my favorite movies of the year so far, a delightful send-up of James Bond movies that, to me, is actually more purely entertaining than any single Bond film made thus far.

We've written a little about a possible Kingsman sequel, with Vaughn saying it would introduce American Kingsmen into the mix and Colin Firth might return, but at this point, there are still a lot of mysteries surrounding the sequel. Well now the mystery of who might direct the movie seems to be solved. Speaking with Yahoo, Vaughn had this to say:

“Well, the good news is that I’m writing [the sequel] next door at the moment. If I think I can get the script good enough, then we are making it...We are doing our damndest to make that happen.”
“I’m in love with these characters and I want to work with them again so I’ll probably be breaking the rule of [me] tending not to make sequels.”

That's great news for people who loved his slick, stylish take on the spy genre, and I'm excited that he's excited enough about this project to want to come back and direct it himself. Vaughn is working on a number of different things, but this shows that he's really into this particular story, which will hopefully translate into another great, energetic film.

Admiral Ackbar Takes George Clooney's Role in ACKBAR's ELEVEN Mashup

George Clooney is generally considered one of the most handsome men on Earth, so the irony of his Danny Ocean character from Ocean's Eleven being portrayed by the hideously ugly Admiral Ackbar is not lost on this Star Wars mashup, Ackbar's Eleven. A few of the reaction shots are particularly well-timed, but there are a heck of a lot more than eleven people in this room. This just puts us one step closer to Star Wars being mashed up with every other property ever created, at which point the internet (and possibly the universe itself) will surely explode with the fury of a thousand Death Stars.

Chiwetel Ejiofor’s DOCTOR STRANGE Character Revealed

$

0

Earlier this year, Marvel was looking to cast Chiwetel Ejiofor alongside Benedict Cumberbatch in their big screen adaptation of Doctor Strange. It seems like that casting might now be official, as Deadline is reporting that he will be taking on the villainous role of Baron Mordo, who first appeared in the comic Strange Tales in 1963.

But Marvel is switching things up with the character. Even though he’s Doctor Strange's enemy in the comics, the site explains, "don’t look for him to be necessarily a completely villainous character. Rather, he’s an amalgamation of characters culled from Doctor Strange‘s mythology."

This wouldn't be the first change in the adaptation process as Tilda Swinton is playing a female version of The Ancient One, who was a Tibetan male sorcerer from the comics. It will be interesting to see how they play with Mordo in the story for the film.

The movie will tell the story of Dr. Stephen Strange, a brilliant and arrogant neurosurgeon whose hands are completely damaged in a car accident. While trying to find a way to heal himself, he discovers the hidden world of magic and alternate dimensions.

Here's a more detailed description of Mordo for those of you not familiar from Marvel Wiki:

Mordo began his tutelage under the Ancient One as early as the 1930's, already an adult; residing in the Ancient One's lair brought him reduced aging. The Ancient One realized that Mordo's lust for power made him dangerous but chose to teach him anyway feeling that he could at least keep a watchful eye on him.
Mordo was immediately resentful of Stephen Strange when he began studying under the Ancient One and magically restrained him from speaking when Strange accidentally walked in on Mordo's plot. The plot failed, Strange became the Ancient One's disciple, and Mordo eventually left.

The movie will be released on November 4th, 2016.

Batman Character Design For Cancelled "Dark as Hell" Animated Series

This is a Batman character design created by Coran “Kizer” Stone for a cancelled animated Batman series WB Animation was developing at one point. I’m not sure what the name of the series was, but it was described by the artist as being "dark as hell."

This was one of the first Designs that I did when I was helping to develop the now scrapped, Dark as hell, Batman series for WB animation. T'was fun though. James Tucker (the producer) was such a seriously talented dude to work with.

It’s a pretty rad design, and different from any other Batman design I recall seeing before. What do you all think of it? Also, if anyone out there could fill us in on any more details about this animated production, let me know!
