Universal Pictures is once again looking to get their supernatural horror film Dracula Year Zero into development. The movie was first announced back in 2008 when director Alex Proyas (The Crow) was attached to direct it. Proyas ended up leaving the project due to budget issues and went to focus on his adaptation of Paradise Lost, which was recently cancelled, also because of budget issues. At the time, Sam Worthington was also attached to star in the film as Dracula. Proyas is obviously having a rough time getting a movie off the ground these days.
Today Deadline reports that the studio is in negotiations with commercial director Gary Shore to direct the movie. It looks like this would be shores first feature film, who previously directed a short called The Draft. But! Most of you might be familiar with shores artistically done short called Wolverine Vs. The Hand, which you can watch below.
I'd be interested to see what what Shore would do with a feature film, I think the guy has some talent. If he ends up taking the film we'll get to see what exactly he can do. Check out the video below then read some details on the Dracula film...
Worthington is no longer attached the project, but here's a few little comments Proyas made while working on it. He said the script by Matt Sazama andBurk Sharpless will,
put the whole legend on its head in every conceivable way and comes out with something that is both a kind of an ode to Bram Stoker’s original Dracula, in that it’s kind of a prequel to that, but it also redefines the character to such an extent that I found it quite exciting, so that is very much a kind of reinvention of that character and it’s why I got excited about it.
He goes on to talk about the story a bit saying,
It's Prince Vlad of Transylvania in the 14th century, and to save his kingdom and his family he takes his first step into darkness, It's his evolution into the monster that Dracula became.
He concluded by saying that the movie is going to be a more realistic take on the story.
What do you think about the possibility of Shore taking on this new Dracula film?
