Here's the first movie trailer for the Peter Jackson-produced documentary West of Memphis, which is about the West Memphis Three. The doc was directed by Amy Berg, and follows the frustratingly sad story of how three young boys by the names of Jason Baldwin, Jesse Misskelley Jr., and Damien Echols, a.k.a. the West Memphis Three, were wrongly convicted in 1994 for murdering three 8-year-old boys in West Memphis. This is a great trialer for a great looking documentary.
Director Peter Jackson and his wife Fran Walsh had quietly been helping and paying for investigators to find DNA and forensic evidence that eventually led to freeing the West Memphis Three last August after 18 years in prison. This was all kickstarted by a 1996 HBO documentary called Paradise Lost: The Child Killings at Robin Hood Hills, which was followed by two more Paradise Lost docs, one which has yet to be released.
Now that West of Memphis is completed, Jackson says his goal is to get the West Memphis Three’s names cleared and help find the real killer. “There are three standing convictions for triple child murder against Damien, Jason, and Jesse,” Jackson tells EW. “They are unjust. And there is also a person who killed these three children. Cases like this have to be taken through to the very end because it’s only by doing that that it can be prevented from happening in other places.”
It's set to premiere this year at the Sundance Film Festival 2012.
