MAD MEN Finale: What If Don Didn't Write That Final Ad?

$

(I avoided spoilers in the headline, but fair warning: from this point on, this article contains spoilers for the series finale of Mad Men.)

After seven seasons, AMC's Mad Men came to a close last night, and as is often the case with series finales these days, there's a lot to discuss and break down. This piece, however, is only going to concentrate on the very end of the show. I'm assuming you've all seen the episode by now, so let's go ahead and dive right in.

Don embraces a man who tells a heartfelt story in a therapy session/seminar, does some yoga on a cliffside, the camera pulls in close, and he smiles to himself. Immediately, the iconic "I'd Like To Buy The World A Coke" commercial begins to play, and that's the end of the show. Everything I've read online since the finale aired assumes that Don returned to McCann and came up with that commercial, but that wasn't my first thought at all. I didn't think Don was responsible for that piece of advertising...I thought it was Peggy Olson.

Earlier in the episode, Don says he's retired. He's all but abandoned the Don Draper persona, embracing his true name by going to see Stephanie, Anna Draper's niece, in California. She's one of the few people who knows him as Dick Whitman. For Dick, California has always represented a place where anything can happen, a carefree landscape free from the confines of work, family, and the responsibilities of his world in New York City. When Don walked out of McCann during that pitch a while back, it was partially because he was no longer the big fish that everyone looked to when a problem needed solving. After Sterling Cooper was acquired, he just became one of many creative directors, and in a meeting in which he thought he'd be asked to save the day, he had to sit there and listen to someone else's pitch. That's not his style, so he bailed.

Peggy, on the other hand, has spent the past few episodes struggling with the decision to stay or leave the new agency. She checks out other prospects and discovers that McCann is the best option for her career, and she even turns Joan down in the finale when Joan offers Peggy a partnership at her new production company. Peggy stays, though, and the last time we see her, she's typing away at the office with a supportive Stan standing right behind her. She's been Don's protege for years, and though she's tried to be his friend, Stan rightly tells her that she's eventually going to have to move on because that relationship can be destructive. She doesn't need Don anymore. Peggy asserts herself at McCann (remember that badass entrance in the penultimate episode?), and in the finale she gets back on the campaign she wants because she knows how to stand up for herself and get sh*t done. As Pete Campbell says, one day people are going to brag because they were able to work with her.

So Don's gone, and Peggy's staying. That's in the text of the show. Matthew Weiner obviously left the ending up for different interpretations, and I'm sure you could point to a number of things to indicate that Don was responsible for the Coke campaign. But what if Dick Whitman finally shed his Don Draper persona forever out there on the California coast? What if it took a commune of hippies — ironic, considering his disdain for them that goes back even to the pilot — to get him to accept his true self? Not just to find a temporary solace away from his life, but to achieve real serenity? And what if it's Peggy, who started off as a lowly secretary, who is responsible for one of the biggest and most popular ads in the world? Her dream is to create work that has real meaning, something that lasts, and that certainly fits the bill.

Like David Chase and the question of Tony Soprano's fate, I'm sure Weiner will be asked about his ending dozens of times over the next few years, and he may even provide what he believes to be the definitive answer to the questions posed in the finale. But for right now, the show belongs to the viewers, and it's up to us what to make of the ending. What do you think happened in the Mad Men finale?

We also have video of Deadshot (Will Smith) and Rick Flag (Joel Kinnaman) storming a building. Then we have some of Deadshot and a gum-chewing Quinn looking to get into some trouble.

The film will hit theaters on August 5th, 2016. While we wait for some official photos, enjoy these photos and video taken from the set of the highly anticipated film.

After seeing above, whatever apprehensions anyone may have about Leto's Joker and Robbie's Harley can be put to rest: their versions deserve all the anticipation and excitement they can generate. See Anna Kendrick as Indiana Jones in Parody of THE LAST CRUSADE

With Pitch Perfect 2 now in theaters (read my review here), star Anna Kendrick is looking for a new gig. Well, how about donning the famous fedora of Indiana Jones? Disney is going to make another movie anyway. In a new video that promotes Red Nose Day, a charity for disadvantaged kids around the world, Kendrick suits up as "Indianna" Jones and reenacts the famous scene at the end of Indiana Jones and The Last Crusade in which Indy has to choose which cup is the Holy Grail. With the aid of comedian Brett Gelman (who appeared in the series finale of Mad Men last night) as the old Templar knight, Kendrick chooses wisely in this funny parody video. Check it out below:

Jack Black Reteaming With NACHO LIBRE Director For Comedy MICRONATIONS

$
0

There was a time in the mid-2000s when it seemed as if Jack Black was on top of the world. He's since dropped out of the spotlight considerably, but he appears to be making a bit of a resurgence. He's starring in The D-Train (in limited theaters now), he has Goosebumps on the way, a new show called The Brink on HBO debuting soon, and now he's reteaming with the director of Nacho Libre for a new comedy called Micronations.

Jared Hess will direct a screenplay written by New Girl writers Robert Snow and Christian Magalhaes, and the story centers on the strange trend of people starting their own countries in their backyards.

In MICRONATIONS, a lovable oddball finds a place to belong among the bizarre and ridiculous world of "do-it-yourself countries," inhabited by a motley crew of eccentrics and visionaries who have declared their own backyards sovereign nations...or "micronations." He soon finds himself recruited as Head of Defense for the tiny nation of Valoria (population: 12), and is thrust into an overblown battle with neighboring nation, Wayne County, Nevada.

As others have pointed out, this might mean that Hess is no longer in the picture when it comes to Sony's new Spider-Man film. He was on a list of potential candidates for the directing gig, but this announcement could mean that he's either chosen to remove himself from that list or the studio has chosen someone else. We'll soon find out who will ultimately direct Spider-Man, but with Micronations on his plate, it seems like it won't be Jared Hess.

George Miller Reveals Title of The MAD MAX: FURY ROAD Sequel

$

It's been a long time since I've seen a film that has received the amount of praise as Mad Max: Fury Road from both critics and normal audiences, and the social media buzz for the film seems to be off the charts. It's no surprise, considering 70-year-old director George Miller was somehow able to film most of the stunts practically and set a new bar for action filmmaking in the process.

Back in 2010, Miller was planning on filming Fury Road and then immediately moving into production on another sequel called Mad Max: Furiosa. Well, check out the director's first tweet (he just joined Twitter yesterday):

So plans are in place for more Mad Max films, but the next title won't be Mad Max: Furiosa. Miller appeared on The Q&A Podcast (via The Playlist) and revealed that name of the next sequel is going to be Mad Mad: The Wasteland. What could that mean? Is the Wasteland the area that the women wanted to ride across on motorcycles in Fury Road? Is it a catch-all name for the world itself in a post-apocalyptic state? Or something else entirely? I'd love to hear your guesses.

We know that Tom Hardy will be back since he's signed on for three more movies, but there's no word yet on whether Charlize Theron will return to reprise her role as Furiosa. I really hope she does, because she was one of the best parts of Fury Road. What do you think?

Heath Ledger Almost Played MAD MAX in FURY ROAD

$

0

When the world lost Heath Ledger in 2008, we lost a tremendous actor who was just beginning to come into his own as a performer. His work as The Joker in The Dark Knight has become the ultimate big-screen version of the character, and there were dozens of characters that he hadn't yet portrayed that could have become just as iconic. As it turns out, one of those characters was Mad Max.

In an interview with The Daily Beast (via The Playlist), director George Miller revealed that he and Ledger had multiple conversations about Ledger taking on the mantle from fellow Aussie Mel Gibson:

“Every time Heath [Ledger] would come through Sidney, he’d call in and we’d chat about Max. He had that same thing that Mel and Tom Hardy have—that maleness, charisma, and restless energy, which you need to play a relatively still character. The world lost someone great when he went. Tom was the next to walk through the door that had that vibe.”

This casting makes total sense to me, and as with any time I think about Ledger's death, I'm saddened by all of the performances we won't get to see from the talented young actor. Tom Hardy stepped in and made Max his own, but what do you think Leger's Mad Max would have been like if he were still alive to play the character?

Will Lex Luthor Wear His Warsuit in BATMAN V SUPERMAN?

will-lex-luthor-wear-his-warsuit-in-batman-v-superman

Some new details regarding Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice have surfaced regarding Lex Luthor and the classic warsuit that he uses to fight Superman in the comics. A lot of fans have been wondering if he'll pop up in the movie wearing that, and thanks to JoBlo we have an answer for you! If you don't want to know what that answer is, stop reading now!

When talking about the look of Luthor's character in the movie, director Zack Snyder said:

"He’s not any of the Lexes that you’ve seen, that’s for sure. Other than him being a captain of industry and one person to the world and another person to himself. And bald, of course. Our Lex is disarming and he’s not fake. He says what he believes and he says what’s on his mind. If you can unravel the string and decipher what he means, it’s all there."

Lex will also apparently be a man of action as well. In regards to his trademark green and purple warsuit, the answer is yes, he will be wearing it. Here is what JoBlo reports:

"According to a very trusted and reliable source, not only will Lex be the main villain, but he will also get in on the action...and will do so wearing his trademark green/purple WARSUIT! That's right, we will finally be seeing Lex don the armor he's worn for decades in the comics and various animated series/films."

They go on to tease what the suit will look like in the movie:

"Our source says it will be very much like the many variations we've seen in the past and will obviously fit the style and look of the film (and DCCU films in general). Lex will don the suit for at least part of the film, but it's unclear if it's just in the finale. Either way, he'll be rockin' the suit and that more than likely means a throwdown with Supes (although we can't outright confirm that)."

It's going to be quite a sight to see watching Jesse Eisenberg's Lex fighting Henry Cavil's Superman. I'm sure the battle will be epic. At least I hope it is! It's not surprising to hear that the warsuit would be in the movie. After all, Snyder and Warner Bros. seem to be packing in as much as they possibly can, which worries the hell out of me. As we reported over the weekend, Doomsday will also play a pretty hefty villainous role in the film.

At least we know we'll get some cool-looking fight sequences. Hopefully the talent behind the film's development can give us a great story and script as well.

Keegan-Michael Key Channels J.K. Simmons in WHIPLASH Parody Music Video

Whiplash was my favorite film of 2014, and star J.K. Simmons won an Oscar for his instantly iconic character Terence Fletcher, a conductor with an unorthodox method of urging the best work from his students. Keegan-Michael Key (who stole Pitch Perfect 2 in a small role) is one half of the comedy duo Key & Peele, and in a new music video for Bhi Bhiman's new song “Moving To Brussels,” the comedian does his best Terence Fletcher impression, ripping Bhiman a new one and demanding he play extremely an extremely specific section of John Williams' score for Star Wars on his guitar. I love Key's comedy and I'd never heard of Bhiman before, but after seeing this, I'm definitely going to seek out more. Watch the video below:

Chris Pratt Calls GHOSTBUSTERS Rumors "Complete Bullsh*t"

$

Chris Pratt rocketed to the top of every studio's "want" list after he brought Star-Lord to life in Guardians of the Galaxy and was cast in the Steven Spielberg-produced Jurassic World. One of the many projects for which he's been rumored is a new Ghostbusters movie that would follow Paul Feig's upcoming female-led movie. Sony is definitely looking to expand the Ghostbusters universe, and you might remember this particular project from reports that went around claiming it would be a "guy-centric" version of the film. That "guy-centric" description seems to have been completely made up by a reporter with an agenda all his own, but reports indicated that Channing Tatum and Pratt were being pitched as two members of a possible new team.

But Pratt spoke with GQ in a new interview, and it turns out those plans aren't nearly as concrete as everyone assumed:

"No one has ever even spoken to me about that. Never. I've even seen Channing a couple times. As far as I know, that's complete bullshit. Knight Rider—bullshit. All of them."

It seems strange that he and Tatum, who have reportedly been wanting to work together for a while, wouldn't have had a real conversation about this possibility. But I doubt he'd lie about something like this so early on in the process. It's not like a Benedict Cumberbatch/Khan situation in which he's trying to preserve some big secret. So while that doesn't exactly close the door on either of these movies ever happening in the future, at least right now it doesn't seem like Pratt will be involved with either of them. Of course, that could all change with a quick phone call from a studio.

THE FLASH Meets SUPERGIRL on The Cover of Variety, But Will They Crossover?

the-flash-meets-supergirl-on-the-cover-of-variety-will-they-crossover

The Flash (Grant Gustin) and Supergirl (Melissa Benoist) meet on the cover of the latest issue of Variety with producer Greg Berlanti. The upcoming Supergirl series has not been getting a lot of love from first trailer that was released. There were a lot of complaints, and I didn't see how these shows could crossover with each other because they seem so different. When Berlanti is asked if we would ever see these shows crossover with each other, he said:

“The network has said publicly at this point they’re going to keep her to themselves. I always approach the shows as a fan first, so I would love to see (a crossover). I think in success, all things are possible. But there’s a lot that would have to happen before everybody might say yes to that.”

So there's a chance that one day a crossover could happen. Again, I don't think a crossover would really work because the tones of the shows don't match, but maybe over time Supergirl could evolve into something that would make sense for a crossover. Would you like to see these two shows eventually crossover?

Rape of Thrones: Sansa Stark (And The Audience) Deserved Better

$

(Spoilers ahead.)

Last night's episode of Game of Thrones, "Unbowed, Unbent, Unbroken," ended with one of the most disturbing scenes in the HBO series' history: on her wedding night, Sansa Stark was forcibly raped by her new husband Ramsay Bolton, while Theon Greyjoy/Reek was made to stand in the doorway and watch. This is the latest in a long line of rapes and rape threats that have popped up on the show, going all the way back to Dany and Khal Drogo in season one (which the show turned into a rape even though it was consensual in the books) and culminating with Jaime raping Cersei in the sept near the body of their recently-murdered son.

I understand that Westeros is a dangerous place, and sometimes an especially dangerous place for women, but if the showrunners weren't ashamed of themselves in regards to any of the previous rape controversies in the series, they certainly should be this time.

There were three characters in play during last night's scene in question:

  • Sansa, who has already suffered untold horrors by being physically and psychologically tortured by Joffrey, nearly being raped by the townspeople of King's Landing, and enduring the loss of her family members at the hands of her family's enemies.
  • Ramsay, who has already been very well established as the successor to Joffrey when it comes to the most sadistic son of a bitch in the Seven Kingdoms (torture, hunting humans for sport, the psychological breaking down and castrating of Theon, etc).
  • Theon, who, while admittedly being sort of a douche, has experienced torture and torment — mostly by Ramsay's hand — that is wildly unequal to his douchebaggery.

So after the rape scene, what did we learn? Absolutely nothing that we didn't already know. That's the mark of bad storytelling: when neither the plot nor the characters are furthered in any considerable way.

One of the only things I can possibly think of as an excuse for this scene (and it's not even a good excuse) would be that it adds fuel to the fire of Sansa's eventual revenge. I haven't read all of the books yet, so I don't even know if that happens or not. But did she really need to be raped for us to feel like we were on her side? The show has spent the past few episodes building up Sansa and giving her some agency alongside Littlefinger, only to rip it away again in last night's scene.

This is going to sound strange and I'm going to do my best to explain what I mean here, but I'm guessing it'll be easy to take this out of context and I encourage you all to bear with me and try to understand what I mean by this: if the showrunners chose to include this rape as fuel for the fire, show us Sansa's face while it's happening. I do NOT want to see the rape itself — hearing Sophie Turner's sounds off camera was bad enough — but show us how this is actually affecting Sansa, not how it's affecting Theon, who is just standing there in the corner of the room. Yes, it must have been awful for Theon to see that...but how much worse was it for Sansa herself?

If this is set-up for Theon to come out of his Reek shell and kill Ramsay, then using Sansa's rape as a catalyst is a disgusting and embarrassing storytelling tactic. Theon has already been tortured enough by Ramsay to earn a revenge payoff himself without that horrible extra scene thrown on top of everything else. If it's set-up for Sansa eventually killing Ramsay, then this sequence was poorly directed; by concentrating on Theon's reaction to the rape, the showrunners took away what little power Sansa had left in that scenario. I still like the show, but it's becoming increasingly difficult to watch when scenes like this are appearing with alarming frequency.

Sansa deserved better than that, and we deserved better storytelling than that.

STAR WARS Writer Lawrence Kasdan Teases The Return of Lando Calrissian

Lando Calrissian is one of my favorite characters in the Star Wars saga, so it was a little disappointing to hear that while Luke, Leia, and Han will all be back in Star Wars: The Force Awakens, there was no room for the continuing adventures of the galaxy's most devilishly dressed scoundrel. But that doesn't mean that the character is gone for good.

In a new interview with Vanity Fair, The Force Awakens co-writer Lawrence Kasdan — who also wrote The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi — said something that Lando fans are going to be very, very happy about:

My son wants to know: Are we ever going to see Lando Calrissian again in a Star Wars movie?
Right now, there’s no Lando Calrissian in this movie [The Force Awakens]. But Lando I don’t think is finished in any way, shape, or form.

But does that mean that Billy Dee Williams will reprise his role, or that we'll see a younger version of the character in one of the spin-off films? That remains unknown, but I'm personally hoping we see Williams suit up once again. The whole interview is a fantastic read for anyone who's interested in Star Wars (I'm guessing that'll be all of you), and I highly encourage you to head that way to read the full piece.

Where do you think Lando Calrissian will pop up next (other than Star Wars Rebels)?

Phil Lord Discusses THE FLASH and Animated SPIDER-MAN Movie

$

0

Phil Lord and Chris Miller (The LEGO Movie) are taking on a couple big projects that fans will be anxious to see. The are currently developing the big screen live action adaptation of The Flash starring Ezra Miller for Warner Bros., as well as the animated feature film version of Spider-Man.

Not much has been revealed about these projects since they jumped on board, but while appearing as a guest on the Hippojuice podcast, Lord gave an update on the movies. Talking about The Flash he confirmed that they will be going with the Barry Allen version of the superhero.

“We’re trying to break a story. It’s interesting, because there’s a really popular TV show out there, and we’re trying to carve out space for the movie that’s apart from that. I think we’re doing alright. … I believe [our Flash] is going to be Barry Allen. … It’s going to be it’s own [thing, apart from the TV show] — we’re more trying to stick with the cinematic universe… it really is its own thing, and kind of a stand-alone movie. We’re just trying to think of the best story. I think you guys will like it, it’s kind of a different take on superhero stuff.”

They must have some kind of solid idea for the story. They’re at least far enough along in development to think that we’ll like what they’re doing. I love the seriew The Flash, and it's going to be hard to compete with that. As much as they try to separate the two, there’s no doubt that fans are going to end up comparing them. Hopefully the deliver something great. I wouldn’t expect anything less from these guys.

As far as the animated Spider-Man movie goes, Lord said,

“We’re sort of juggling superheroes with the color red in them, that’s all we do. [laughter] We’re trying not to confuse their powers or anything, but it does get tricky. But it’s the same thing, is there a way to do one of these movies in a new way? That’s the exciting thing about it being animated, is it opens up a lot of different possibilities.
“Chris and I like to carve out spaces where people will let us do what we want. So much of our careers are like ‘oh, no one will bother us while we try to make a 21 Jump Street movie, because it’s such a crazy idea, no one’s going to know what to do with it.’ So we’re doing these things kind of like that. They’re part of these huge franchises, but kind of are off a little bit to the side, and that gives us a lot of creative freedom, and that’s the thing we love. Hopefully we won’t waste that!”

So both of these projects are going to be their own thing, and basically stand on their own, which is fine. I think they’ll both end up being better films for it.

I’ve embedded the podcast below so you can listen to it. Lord also briefly talks about some of the other projects they are working on.

Exciting New Trailer for PAN Shows Us a Visually Imaginative Film

exciting-new-trailer-for-pan-shows-us-a-visually-imaginative-film

Director Joe Wright (Atonement, Hanna) is taking on the story of Peter Pan, and his version of the story looks visually spectacular. The movie is simply called Pan, and we have a new trailer for you to watch today full of all kinds of exciting new footage that inspires the imagination.

This version of Peter Pan is different from any other that we've seen. In most versions of the story, Peter is an immature kid who's not ready to grow up, but here he seems to be portrayed as someone who's more mature and has a strong determination.

I like what I've seen in the trailers, and this seems like it has potential to be a great movie. I really like the look and feel of the movie, and it has a great cast that includes Levi Miller as Peter, Garrett Hedlund as a young James Hook, Rooney Mara as Tiger Lily, and Hugh Jackman as Blackbeard.

A wholly original adventure about the beginnings of the beloved characters created by J.M. Barrie. Peter (Miller) is a mischievous 12-year-old boy with an irrepressible rebellious streak, but in the bleak London orphanage where he has lived his whole life those qualities do not exactly fly.  Then one incredible night, Peter is whisked away from the orphanage and spirited off to a fantastical world of pirates, warriors and fairies called Neverland.  There, he finds amazing adventures and fights life-or-death battles while trying to uncover the secret of his mother, who left him at the orphanage so long ago, and his rightful place in this magical land.  Teamed with the warrior Tiger Lily (Mara) and a new friend named James Hook ( Hedlund), Peter must defeat the ruthless pirate Blackbeard (Jackman) to save Neverland and discover his true destiny—to become the hero who will forever be known as Peter Pan.

Rounding out the cast are Taejoo Na (The Kick) as Kwahu, Nonso Anozie (Atonement) as Bishop, Kathy Burke (Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy) as Mother Barnabas, Kurt Egyiawan (Skyfall) as Murray, Lewis MacDougall (In the Name of the Children) as Nibs, newcomer Leni Zieglmeier as Wendy Darling, Jack Charles (Mystery Road) as The Chief/Tiger Lily’s father, and Amanda Seyfried (Les Misérables) as Mary.

The movie flies into theaters on October 9th.

A new trailer and poster have been released for the second chapter in The Maze Runner storyline, and the movie looks awesome. Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials continues the adventures of Thomas (Dylan O’Brien) and his companions. After barely escaping the deadly maze they find that life doesn't get any easier outside of it. The Maze was only the first phase of a program developed by WCKD to weed out the weak for some kind of purpose yet to be revealed.

This is one of the few young adult book series film adaptations that I really like. Director Wes Ball did a great job bringing the first story to life on the big screen, and it looks like he nailed the second one as well. Here's the synopsis:

Thomas (O’Brien) and his fellow Gladers face their greatest challenge yet: searching for clues about the mysterious and powerful organization known as WCKD. Their journey takes them to the Scorch, a desolate landscape filled with unimaginable obstacles. Teaming up with resistance fighters, the Gladers take on WCKD’s vastly superior forces and uncover its shocking plans for them all.

The film is based on the YA book series by James DashnerThe movie also stars Kaya ScodelarioThomas Brodie-Sangster, Ki Hong LeeRosa SalazarKatherine McNamaraJacob LoflandGiancarlo EspositoLili Taylor, and Barry Pepper

Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials opens September 18th.
