Think Geek has has a Captain America shield backpack for those of us who are looking to embrace our inner hero. The backpack actually seems really awesome. If I were to wear something like this back when I was growing up, I probably would have had the shit kicked out of me for being a geek. These days, though, something like this would make you the coolest kid in school! Of course, if someone did try to give you a hard time, you could always just take the backpack off and beat them with it.

The Hulk, Iron Man, Emma Peel, Hawkeye, and Black Widow are joining forces to help save everything... and Captain America is nowhere to be found. The Marvel Cinematic Universe Will Never Go Full-On Dark

One of the things you may have noticed in the Marvel films that have been released, is that no matter how crazy intense or bleak things get, the superheroes go about saving the day with a sense of humor. There is always a light and fun sense of adventure in the MCU, and don’t expect that to ever change. Marvel is never going to take their films to the utter darkness of Man of Steel, The Dark Knight trilogy, or the upcoming Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice.

During a Reddit Q&A after a screening of Avengers: Age of Ultron, Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige was asked about Marvel going dark, and according to the journalist covering the event, this is what Feige said:

“There is no dark turn in the MCU. [Feige] says every year fans come up to him and ask him if this movie is when the MCU goes “dark” or takes a “dark” turn. He said while the trailers may seem ominous or have a sense of impending doom, the movies do not have that feel, and will not. He said he “Hoped people would catch on by now” – there will be no giant dark turns in the MCU where it then continues to head in that direction. The humor is in the DNA of the movies, there are no plans to change that.”

Of course, dark and bad things are still going to happen. They always have in the MCU. Characters can still die, and total destruction is eminent. But the tone of the films we’ve seen will stay consistent. I love the way Marvel is handling their movies, and it’s good to know that they are going to stick with the unique way that they do things.

The fact they can handle such serious subject matter and still interject humor is a powerful storytelling tool that’s not easy to pull off.

The History of the Wars that Inspired GAME OF THRONES - Video Presentation

TED-Ed has released an interesting video presentation that takes us through the history of the wars that inspired George R.R. Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire, which is also know as the Game of Thrones on HBO. I'm sure many of you have already heard of the "Wars of the Roses," but this video offers a nice little refresher course of what it was all about and explains how it influenced the epic fantasy story that many of us are enjoying today.

Beginning around 1377, medieval England was shaken by a power struggle between two noble families, which spanned generations and involved a massive cast of characters, complex motives and shifting loyalties. Sound familiar? Alex Gendler illustrates how the historical conflict known as the Wars of the Roses served as the basis for much of the drama in Game of Thrones.

CBS has announced that Greg Berlanti's series Supergirl will air on Mondays at 8pm starting in November. They've also released a banner for the series along with two new photos featuring Melissa Benoist as Kara Danvers, Mehcad Brooks as Jimmy Olsen, and Calista Flockhart as Cat Grant.

I love what Berlanti has done with The Flash and Arrow, and I'm really hoping that he was able to bring that same magic to Supergirl. We'll have a better idea of what the show will be like when we actually get to see some footage. In the meantime, here's a new synopsis, and you can check out the photos below that.

SUPERGIRL is an action-adventure drama based on the DC Comics character Kara Zor-El (Melissa Benoist), Superman’s (Kal-El) cousin who, after 12 years of keeping her powers a secret on Earth, decides to finally embrace her superhuman abilities and be the hero she was always meant to be. Twelve-year-old Kara escaped the doomed planet Krypton with her parents’ help at the same time as the infant Kal-El. Protected and raised on Earth by her foster family, the Danvers, Kara grew up in the shadow of her foster sister, Alex (Chyler Leigh), and learned to conceal the phenomenal powers she shares with her famous cousin in order to keep her identity a secret. Years later at 24, Kara lives in National City assisting media mogul and fierce taskmaster Cat Grant (Golden Globe Award winner Calista Flockhart), who just hired the Daily Planet’s former photographer, James Olsen (Mehcad Brooks), as her new art director. However, Kara’s days of keeping her talents a secret are over when Hank Henshaw (David Harewood), head of a super-secret agency where her sister also works, enlists her to help them protect the citizens of National City from sinister threats. Though Kara will need to find a way to manage her newfound empowerment with her very human relationships, her heart soars as she takes to the skies as Supergirl to fight crime.

With Pitch Perfect 2 opening this Friday, Screen Junkies created an amusing Honest Trailer for the first film that might make you question why you liked the movie in the first place... if you liked it. I did enjoy the first Pitch Perfect, and one of the reasons was because of how silly and cheesy it was. This Honest Trailer sure does drive that point home, though, and rips the movie a new aca-hole.

The Barden Bellas are aca-back in the aca-sequel Pitch Perfect 2. Now aca-relive the aca-original film, and aca-help us stop aca-talking this way!!

Joss Whedon Says That Directing AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON Broke Him

joss-whedon-says-that-directing-avengers-age-of-ultron-broke-him

Avengers: Age of Ultron may have ended up being a harder movie to make than director Joss Whedon thought it would be. It sounds like he started out with an idea that he loved, but over the course of the film production things didn't work out as smoothly as he had hoped. In a recent interview with Hero Complex, Whedon admits that the film broke him, and he explained why when asked what the most taxing element on the movie was.

"The weight of the thing. The weight of the last thing, of this not just being the next thing that happens — I wanted this film to be its own movie. I wanted it to be better, if possible, than the first one. Not that the first one was the best movie ever made, but I wanted to do better, just be better at shooting. I wanted to work harder on the script. I wanted to spend more time just really working every aspect of it, because why go again if you’re not doing something new?"

I personally thought that he accomplished that. I like this movie more than I liked the first Avengers film. I know not everyone feels the same way, though. He goes on to talk about how in the middle of production a fear of failure hit him:

"I heard that voice in my head every time, ‘But is this a great idea?’ And suddenly I had doubt that I don’t usually suffer from. And meanwhile, the studio’s gonna have some too, because everything’s riding on this all of a sudden. And it became a problem in a way that nothing else has. And it was a hard movie to make on top of that. So being paralyzed by either indecision or the weight of responsibility? Not useful, don’t have time for your paralysis, son, snap out of it. This was the hardest work I’ve ever done… it a little bit broke me."

No wonder he didn't want to take on the task of directing Avengers: Infinity War! We'll have to wish the Russo Bros. the best of luck when they start work on that epic story. Hopefully it doesn't break them.

After hearing what it was like to direct this movie, I'm pretty sure they next thing he does is going to be on a much smaller scale. Not a project like Star Wars that was previously rumored. The next film he makes is going to be something that helps him find his happy place.

5 Ways Rare Did Platformers Better Than Most

$
0
0

In the late '90s, no third party developer could touch Rare with a fifty foot pole. Hell, the quality of work in their games sometimes rivaled some first party titles on the market at the time. While games like Perfect Dark and Goldeneye had their impact on the gaming industry, no one can deny that Rare's bread and butter were their platforms. In fact, Nintendo Power  (Nintendo's now defunct propaganda magazine) declared Donkey Kong 64 game of year the same year Mario Party, Super Smash Bros., and Pokemon Gold/Silver were released.

All that and we haven't even talked about the masterpieces that are Banjo Kazooie and its sequel, Banjo Tooiee.

And the game that I was barred from playing until I was out of my parents' house: Conkers Bad Fur Day.

Of course Rare has since died a more-than-horrible slow death at the hands of Microsoft, but hope is on the horizon. Steven Mayles (creator of Banjo Kazooie and no longer a part of Rare) announced a kickstarter for Yooka Laylee, a spiritual successor to the former Rare platformers we knew and loved. The fact that it's raised (as of print) more than $1.75 million over its initial goal should speak volumes to how much gamers remember what made these games great, but in case you need a refresher, I'll break it down.

Widespread Appeal

Back in the '90s, Nintendo's strategy for widespread appeal was always to keep things as simple as possible. This strategy is employed by many 3D platform developers today. Unfortunately, what works for Nintendo works because their budget and innovative game mechanics always rectify a story that may be somewhat light in depth. Developers continuing attempts to replicate this style and failing have really killed the genre and made games like Skylanders kids-only territory.

While Rare stories were still very much video game stories, it was storytelling using unique characters, and the dialogue was fantastic. A throwaway line by some random character could have me rolling as a kid just as much as an adult, and as an adult I understood the joke. One of Rare's greatest abilities as a developer was striking a balance across the board with kids and adults. The games were challenging, but not impossible. The humor was sometimes chock-full of innuendo that flew above the heads of children, and then someone would fart and everyone would be laughing. It's a "Rare" mixture many developers strive to hit, but none with nearly as much success as these guys.

Music

Perhaps the most exciting news of Yooka Laylee's project is that both the composer of Banjo Kazooie (Grant Kirkhope) and Donkey Kong 64 (David Wise) would be teaming up to make the game's music. What these guys did back on the Nintendo 64 reaches a level that makes some of the cookie cutter orchestral work of this generation seem cheap in comparison.

While both are fantastic, I personally have a soft spot for the work done on Donkey Kong 64. The way David Wise kept the overarching theme of the Donkey Kong music within each level reminded me of a symphony as a kid, and first brought the thought to mind that video games could truly be considered an art form. Music is one of those things that is ignored if it's bad, and an enhancer to a game's appeal if it's good. That being said, there are few games that I'll play just to hear the music, and both of these top the list.

OH, and who can forget the DK RAP?!

Use of Size

Not size in terms of the game, but rather the characters. I remember the first time I battled a boss in Donkey Kong 64, and I was legitimately freaked the f*** out. My mind was racing on how to defeat this giant behemoth of an armadillo and then my cousin was like "just throw the barrel" and I was like "oh." Sure, the boss battles were a bit rudimentary, but they were fun, and beating down a massive villain really made you feel like you were accomplishing something.

Also shout out to that giant hippo that ate the bananas, as the fact he grew was the most amazing thing I had seen in gaming at that time.

Dedication To Story

Need evidence on this one? Let's take a look at Donkey Kong during the pre-Rare era, Rare era, and then post-Rare era

Pre-Rare

  • Donkey Kong is a villain in Mario's debut...but he has a game named after him...which is nice.
  • Donkey Kong has a son, DK JR, and appears in a couple more games as a side character.

Rare Era

  • Donkey Kong loses a son, but gains a family. Diddy Kong, Dixie Kong, Cranky Kong, Wrinkly, Funky, Candy, Lanky, Tiny, Kiddie — all are added to the list, many of which remain canon post-Rare.
  • Bananas replace coins, Crystal Coconuts introduced
  • King K. Rool and Kremlins introduced
  • Minecarts and platforming greatness

Post-Rare

  • DK goes back to supporting character for several years
  • Gets a racing game based off bongos
  • Nintendo finally gets their act together and pawns them off to a 3rd party developer to make it a Rare-style side scroller again.

All that said, Rare's invention of the crystal coconuts led to the worst video game-related show in gaming history...

The Meta

There was nothing cooler to me as a kid than seeing Banjo play a Gameboy on the opening screen of Banjo Kazooie. Or when Bottles threatened to delete my saved games because I kept pestering him? OH! What about when you could play all of the original Donkey Kong on DK64? Game immersion is fun and all, but I'm a sucker for games that constantly remind you they are games...and Rare did this perhaps best of all.

hauntingly-intense-new-trailers-for-guillermo-del-toros-crimson-peak

We have a couple of new trailers for Guillermo del Toro's gothic haunted house horror movie Crimson Peak, and they are beautifully eerie. The trailers are full of gorgeous new footage, and it sheds even more light on the story that del Toro is excited for his fans to see. One of the trailers is domestic and the other is an international version.

I was already excited for this movie, but this trailer makes it seems like this could be one of the greatest horror movies of our generation. So now you know what my expectations are!

The movie stars Tom HiddlestonJessica Chastain, Charlie Hunnam, and Mia Wasikowska. Here's the synopsis:

In the aftermath of a family tragedy, an aspiring author is torn between love for her childhood friend and the temptation of a mysterious outsider. Trying to escape the ghosts of her past, she is swept away to a house that breathes, bleeds… and remembers.
When her heart is stolen by a seductive stranger, she is swept away to a house atop a mountain of blood-red clay: a place filled with secrets that will haunt her forever. Between desire and darkness, between mystery and madness, lies the truth behind Crimson Peak.

The movie is set to be released on October 16th.

Bradley Cooper to Recur on LIMITLESS TV Show

$
0
0

Over the past few years, Bradley Cooper has become one of the biggest movie stars in the world. The Hangover films, Silver Linings Playbook, American Hustle, Guardians of the Galaxy, and 2014's highest grossing movie, American Sniper, have made him a household name. But also mixed in to his filmography are a few lesser-known films like 2011's Limitless, a thriller in which he plays a man who unlocks 100% of his brain capacity thanks to a mysterious drug. CBS is turning that movie into a TV show, and now Deadline says Cooper will reprise his role of Eddie Mora on the show. He'll reportedly appear as a recurring character as often as his schedule allows.

Limitless centers on Brian Finch (Jake McDorman) — a new character that exists in the same world as Eddie Mora — who discovers the brain-boosting power of the mysterious drug NZT and is coerced by the FBI into using his extraordinary cognitive abilities to solve complex cases for them. Unbeknownst to the FBI, Brian also has a clandestine relationship with Senator Edward Mora (Cooper), a presidential hopeful and regular user of NZT who has plans of his own for his new protégé.

This seems like a big deal, because movie stars of Cooper's caliber don't often pull double duty in film and television simultaneously. It's different when people gain popularity due to their TV work and stick with the show out of either contractual obligations or a sense of loyalty, like Melissa McCarthy on Mike and Molly or Chris Pratt on Parks and Recreation. Cooper has appeared on TV before (he had a well-received run on J.J. Abrams' Alias and recurred on FX's Nip/Tuck, among other things), but aside from his upcoming stint on Netflix's Wet Hot American Summer prequel, this will be the only time since 2009 he'll be involved with a TV show.

The Amazing Spider-Man director Marc Webb helmed the pilot episode, and the show will air on Tuesdays at 10pm this fall on CBS. Will Cooper's presence be enough to get people to tune in to the show, even if they haven't seen the original movie?

Captain America: The Winter Soldier is one of the best Marvel films to date. It's a thrilling spy story that hearkens back to '70s political thrillers but also includes exciting action sequences, memorable set pieces, and, most importantly, a deeper exploration of characters we love. Cinefix has given the movie the 8-Bit Cinema treatment, and it even includes a brief nod to DC Pierson's cameo as an Apple store employee, which was one of the movie's funniest scenes. Check it out below:

WTF: 20-Foot Statue of a Panda Wearing an Iron Man Suit

Here's something you don't see every day. Supertouch (via Kotaku) points us to a 20-foot statue of a panda wearing an Iron Man suit in a Hong Kong mall. Notice that yin yang symbols have replaced the repulsor beam blasters.

But why is a 20-foot-tall panda wearing an Iron Man suit? I'm baffled by this one. I guess the better question is, "why not?" I'm sure someone's hard at work right now on a mash-up video putting lines from Robert Downey Jr.'s Tony Stark into the mouth of Po from Kung Fu Panda. For more pics, visit Supertouch.

Currently towering over Hong Kong shoppers—and ready for some hardcore Kung Fu—is the six-metre-tall "Iron Panda," an installation by Beijing artist Bi Heng, at the K11 art mall in Tsim Sha Tsui, Hong Kong as part of the K11 Art Foundation’s “Art Nova 100”, a collaboration with Art Basel, showcasing the works of 100 emerging Asian artists. About 70 are on show at the mall until July 6.

Universal Pictures has released a couple of cool new TV spot for Jurassic World. It features some more footage from the film of Chris Pratt’s Owen Grey being not only the smartest, but most amusing person on the island.

In the spots, we get to see some more dinosaur action, including Grey jumping in front of a new co-worker and saving him from being devoured by some raptors. After he does so, he jokingly asked the employee, “Do you ever wonder why there’s a job opening?” At another point he proclaims that they need to get the kids somewhere safe. Is that even possible on an island that is being overrun with dinosaurs, though? Oh yeah! There's also a dino petting zoo, because that's always a good idea! It just seems like so many people are going to die.

Jurassic World is shaping up to be an awesome and suspenseful film that hopefully fans of the franchise will enjoy. I know I’m looking forward to it! The movie comes out on June 12th.

More Pixar Movie Easter Eggs Uncovered in Updated Video

About a year ago, we posted a video that points to a bunch of Easter Eggs in Pixar's animated filmography. Now there's a newer video from the folks at Disney that gives an updated look at some more of the crossovers between characters and locations in these movies. Weirdly, this new video doesn't include the Grape Soda connection that's highlighted in the older video, but there are a few other new items that show up instead. Still, it's a cool reminder of the way Pixar often sneaks in unassuming references to their other films. I'll have to try to keep my eyes open for stuff like this when Inside Out drops later this year.

Legendary Comics Announces The Infinite Adventures of Jonas Quantum

If you thought the world was filled with far too many who believe they are brilliant rather than actually being brilliant, you are not alone. The Infinite Adventures of Jonas Quantum, a newly-announced series from Legendary Comics by Arrow writer Marc Guggenheim and artist Freddie Williams II, stars the latter type of character.

Jonas Quantum is described as a hyper genius, an apt description if he can indeed cure death with his morning coffee. I myself am barely able to make coffee without somehow spilling it, so maybe I am underachieving...not really sure. Dealing with people at all however, well that seems to be something he struggles with (along with shaving, evidently). The book will launch in September of this year, but you can get a glimpse of the bold cover art above.

"Genius with flaws" characters are hit and miss for me. For every fantastic Bruce Banner or Amadeus Cho, there is a Hank Pym or Reed Richards, characters that I just haven't been able to get behind or connect with for a variety of reasons. I'm looking forward to seeing what Guggenheim and Williams II have in store, but in the meantime let us know who your favorite geniuses are, whether it be in comics, TV, or film!
