THE SIMPSONS Renewed for Two More Seasons

the-simpsons-renewed-for-two-more-seasons

Woo-hoo! Fox has renewed The Simpsons for two more seasons! I seriously can’t believe that the classic animated series will be around through 28 seasons. That’s just incredible. I grew up watching this show; it practically raised me! The Simpsons holds the record for longest running scripted series in TV history, and by the time these next two seasons go through there will be 625 episodes.

Homer Simpson expressed his excitement in a statement saying, “I’ve outlasted Letterman, Jon Stewart and ‘McDreamy,’ because I have something they don’t: a costly 200-donut-a-day addiction.”

I wonder how many more seasons the show will go. It has to end at some point, right? I don’t want it to go away anytime soon because I think it’s hit a new stride of greatness. I’ve really been enjoying the last few seasons. If it does end in the next few years, I hope it ends on top.

Other series that were renewed at Fox include New Girl, Brooklyn Nine-NineEmpire, Gotham, Sleepy Hollow, and Will Forte’s Last Man on Earth

What do you all think about The Simpsons going for at least two more seasons? Do you want it to keep going, or are you ready for it to end?

Full Trailer For MR. HOLMES Shows Sherlock Solving One Last Case

Our society may have finally reached peak Sherlock Holmes. There's the fantastic BBC series starring Benedict Cumberbatch, the CBS procedural starring Jonny Lee Miller, the Robert Downey Jr. movies, and now Mr. Holmes, a delightful-looking mystery from director Bill Condon that stars Sir Ian McKellen in the title role. This full trailer for the movie reveals that it's actually far more meta than I thought, with McKellen's Holmes going into a theater and watching a movie that's ostensibly about the adventures he once had with John Watson. There are some other nice self-aware touches, too, such as him saying he never wore the famous deerstalker hat and prefers a cigar to a pipe, so aside from the main plot of this movie (which concerns one final mystery to be solved), the film could serve as a nice commentary on the humanization of legendary figures.

I'm also hoping that the final lines of this trailer don't give away any big revelations in the movie, but we'll have to wait and see the full film before we judge. Mr. Holmes arrives in theaters on July 17th.

MR. HOLMES is a new twist on the world’s most famous detective. In 1947, an aging Sherlock Holmes returns from a journey to Japan, where, in search of a rare plant with powerful restorative qualities, he has witnessed the devastation of nuclear warfare.  Now, in his remote seaside farmhouse, Holmes faces the end of his days tending to his bees, with only the company of his housekeeper and her young son, Roger.  Grappling with the diminishing powers of his mind, Holmes comes to rely upon the boy as he revisits the circumstances of the unsolved case that forced him into retirement, and searches for answers to the mysteries of life and love – before it's too late.

Beautiful SUICIDE SQUAD Fan Art of Margot Robbie's Harley Quinn

We've already seen some fun images of Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn on the set of Suicide Squad that you can check out here. Artist Boss Logic took what we saw in those photos and created these beautiful character portraits of one of the most entertaining characters in the DC Comics universe. The one thing that sets the two illustrations apart is that one of them features Harley blowing a pink bubblegum bubble.

I'd love to get a print of one of these, and I'm looking forward to seeing Harley in action in David Ayer's film. If you want to know what the character's co-creator Bruce Timm thinks of the character design for the movie, click here

Louis C.K. To Write, Direct, and Star In Indie Film I'M A COP

After his film Pootie Tang bombed in 2001, the assumption was that Louis C.K. would never direct another movie again. But since then, he's become one of the biggest comedians in the world, and proven that he has a mastery of the small screen with his FX series Louie, which he writes, directs, stars in, and sometimes edits. According to THR, the powers that be have decided to call him back up to the big leagues, because now he's writing, directing, and starring in a new indie film called I'm a Cop.

The script tells of a depressed middle-aged man who is a volunteer police officer living in the shadow of his mother, a highly decorated retired officer. When she dies, her continued influence forces him to become a real police officer, which is something he never wanted to be.

Sounds exactly like the kind of thing we'd expect from the comedian, who actually played a shaggy cop in a guest role on Parks and Recreation a few years ago. He's been tearing it up with Louie, so I'm looking forward to seeing what C.K. does with another chance at feature-length storytelling. What do you think?

Martin Freeman Joins CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR

Whoa! Marvel.com reports that Martin Freeman has joined the already-impressive cast of Captain America: Civil War.

Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige had this to say:

"From his roles as Bilbo Baggins and Doctor Watson to Tim in 'The Office,' Martin's range from the dramatic to the comedic has consistently impressed us. We couldn't be more honored or excited to have such a talented actor join the Marvel Cinematic Universe."

There's no word yet on who exactly he'll play, but this is definitely exciting news. Freeman is an amazingly talented actor (his work on FX's Fargo last year was spectacular), and the Marvel Cinematic Universe continues to go after top quality people and add incredible actors to its ranks. It's also worth noting that his Sherlock co-star Benedict Cumberbatch will be playing Doctor Strange, so theoretically there's a chance that the two could share the big screen together in the MCU, which I'm pretty sure would set the internet ablaze. We'd love to hear your suggestions and guesses as to who Freeman might be playing in the comments below.

Jeremy Renner Called Black Widow A Slut Again

$

Hey Jeremy Renner, I know you acted in one of the biggest movies in history (and Avengers: Age of Ultron seems likely to join that rarefied group eventually), but you have to know that your words have meaning, right?

A little bit of backstory: during what must have admittedly been a difficult press tour promoting the superhero sequel, Renner and Chris Evans joked around about Black Widow being a slut.

They apologized for those comments with statements below:

Evans: "We answered in a very juvenile and offensive way that rightfully angered some fans. I regret it and sincerely apologize."
Renner: "I am sorry that this tasteless joke about a fictional character offended anyone. It was not meant to be serious in any way. Just poking fun during an exhausting and tedious press tour."

While Evans seemed genuinely apologetic, you can tell from the tone of Renner's statement that he didn't really believe he'd done anything wrong. People were still outraged at their comments, but slowly things began to die down.

Until last night, when Renner went on Conan and stirred this sh*tstorm up all over again. Here's the clip in question:

If you can't watch the video, here's a key quote:

“Mind you, I was talking about a fictional character and fictional behavior. But Conan, if you slept with four of the six Avengers, no matter how much fun you had, you’d be a slut. I’d be a slut.”

Dude. Not cool. Putting aside the fact that this is a fictional character, Black Widow can sleep with whoever the hell she wants to sleep with, and she shouldn't be judged for it. That's just perpetuating a double standard that's been around for decades. Secondly, in the movies Black Widow never slept with Steve Rogers, Tony Stark, Bruce Banner, or Hawkeye, and in Age of Ultron (spoilers ahead), it's revealed that she and Clint Barton are actually just close friends. Black Widow hangs out with his family, and they all seem very friendly together.

I understand making a joke in the heat of the moment during what was likely the fifth or sixth straight hour of sitting in a room while reporters shuffle in and ask you questions. I get that, even if the joke didn't work or was inappropriate. But doubling down on it after you've "apologized" and had the benefit of realizing the mistake? That just seems ignorant and irresponsible to me.

This whole situation feels like a plotline from Entourage. Can you imagine what Renner's publicist must be thinking? This is a PR disaster, and if he keeps it up, he's going to start seeing female fans start to boycott his films. He's being very flippant about the effect that his words have here, but I'm not sure that he remembers that there are a lot of young fans of the Marvel movies, many of which are girls. It's bad enough that they don't have enough female-friendly merchandise to play with, and now this? Come on, man. It's 2015. You've gotta step it up and realize that what you say matters. It may not be a big deal to you, but there's an audience that sees these heroic characters as role models, and to trash the only female of the group like that could have real effects on the kids who look up to her.

Screen Junkies has released their 100th episode of their Honest Trailer series, and in it they take on Fifty Shades of Grey. The crappy-looking movie is hilariously torn to shreds, and it makes me glad that I never wasted my time watching this snooze fest. They also point out how terribly written the book was. I had no idea it was so bad!

It's our 100th Honest Trailer!! To celebrate, we're strapping down 2015's kinkiest movie, Fifty Shades of Grey, in the Honest Trailers playroom. The safe word is 'MOM PORN.'

Tom Hardy Says He Wants to Play THE PUNISHER

Earlier today we posted an article in which Tom Hardy explains the real reason why he had to drop out of Suicide Squad, and it wasn't because of a bad script as previously rumored. I think it's safe to say that one day we'll see Hardy cast in another comic book superhero movie, we just don't know what character it will be. If the actor had his pick of any character to play, though, it would be The Punisher.

The discussion of superhero movies came up in an interview with Collider, and this is how the conversation between Hardy and the site went down:

Collider: "I heard Warner Bros. has a few more superhero movies, maybe one or two that they’re developing [Laughs]."

Hardy: "I want The Punisher… I want The Punisher, or Splinter Cell, I want something…I don’t know what I want."

Collider: "You as Punisher could be very interesting."

Hardy: "I’m not big enough to be The Punisher, I’m 5’9” [Laughs]."

Collider: "But I actually think that adds to the character."

Hardy: "Frank Castle, I would love it. Is that him, isn’t it?"

Collider: "Yeah. It’s Frank Castle."

I don't know about you, but I would love to see Hardy take on the role of The Punisher! He would be such a badass choice. There have been rumors about a Punisher Netflix series, but nothing has been released that confirms or denies it.

Hardy was on a list of actors that Marvel met with to take on the role of Doctor Strange before Benedict Cumberbatch landed it. He's got his foot in the door with Marvel, so you never know what can happen.

What do you think about Hardy in the role of Frank Castle?

BATMAN V SUPERMAN Trailer Gets a DC Animated Style Remake

The teaser trailer for Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice has been remade in the style of the DC animated universe. It was created and animated by James Strecker of JTS Entertainment, who also used voiceover work that you might recognize from some previous DC animated projects. It turned out really cool, and this is what he had to say in a statement:

"When the Batman v Superman trailer came out, people started parodying and copying it like wildfire. I decided to join in the shenanigans. I have been drawing in Bruce Timm's famed DC Animated Universe style since the age of 0 and am currently working on a DCAU webcomic with fellow superhero enthusiast Ted Kendrick."

I've always liked the animation style of Bruce Timm, and it's fun to see it represented in this fan-made trailer. I hope you enjoy it!

Jason Momoa and Byung-hun Lee Join THE MAGNIFICENT SEVEN Remake

Jason Momoa will always be known for his work on Game of Thrones as the awesome warrior Khal Drogo, and soon he'll be known as the guy who tried to turn Aquaman into a cinematic badass. (It remains to be seen if that's possible.) Byung-hun Lee will likely be remembered for his work as Storm Shadow in the G.I. Joe films, and maybe as a T-1000 in Terminator Genisys. Now the two are joining the cast of a big western remake with a terrific ensemble, so here's a chance to work on another memorable project with an excellent cast.

THR says Momoa is in talks to play a villain in The Magnificent Seven, Antoine Fuqua's take on the story of a band of gunfighters hired to protect a small village from bandits. The main villain has reportedly not been cast yet, so Momoa will likely be some sort of henchman character. Meanwhile, Deadline reports that Lee has been cast in the role of Billy Rocks, although they fail to give any sort of description as to who that character is and whether he's on the right or wrong side of the law.

Denzel Washington, Chris Pratt, Ethan Hawke, Vincent D'Onofrio, Wagner Moura (Elite Squad), and Haley Bennett are already on board, and production is slated to begin later this month for a January 2017 release.

Joss Whedon Has Left Twitter, But James Gunn Has His Back

Joss Whedon deleted his Twitter account yesterday, and I initially thought it was because he was finished promoting Avengers: Age of Ultron and he just wanted to take a well-deserved break, relax, and spend his time doing something else other than messing around online. That may be the case, but now I'm seeing talk that death threats and harassment may have played a part in his exit from the social media platform, which is a real shame. The same thing happened to former LOST showrunner Damon Lindelof after the series finale of Breaking Bad, when Lindelof received an overwhelming number of tweets from people who, in pretty volatile ways, basically said "Now THAT'S how you end a TV show!" Some people are apparently really pissed off with how Whedon handled Black Widow's character in Age of Ultron, so they decided to make death threats because of it. Great job, guys. Real smart move.

If you hated Avengers: Age of Ultron, that sucks. I'm sorry you didn't enjoy it. But making death threats to the writer/director, a guy who's clearly had a tough time making this gigantic film and battled the studio on a number of topics just to get the film made? Do you really think that's going to do any good?

Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn took to Facebook to stand up for Whedon, and it's a post worth reading in full. Keep in mind — this is important — that Gunn never says that we aren't allowed to criticize Whedon's film or have a discussion about its perceived shortcomings. Read the entire piece below:

J.J. Abrams Talks About The STAR WARS References in THE FORCE AWAKENS

$
0
0

With interconnected, shared cinematic universes being the name of the game in Hollywood right now, I imagine it'd be tough to keep everything straight if you're J.J. Abrams and the creative team involved with Star Wars: The Force Awakens. Luckily the Lucasfilm Story Group is around to oversee every storytelling decision of the Star Wars universe moving forward, but still — dropping hints and references into a new Star Wars movie seems like a daunting task. How much do you hint at? What exactly do you reference? Well, it seems like Abrams himself struggled with these questions.

Vanity Fair (the outlet that posted those awesome photos from the film earlier this week) has an interview with Abrams arriving on their website soon, but it's not actually there yet. The Playlist got their hands on a copy of it, though, and they've excerpted some key quotes from the writer/director:

"...we’ve obviously had a lot of time [during the development process] to talk about what’s happened outside of the borders of the story that you’re seeing. So there are, of course, references to things, and some are very oblique so that hopefully the audience can infer what the characters are referring to. We used to have more references to things that we pulled out because they almost felt like they were trying too hard to allude to something. I think that the key is—and whether we’ve accomplished that or not is, of course, up to the audience—but the key is that references be essential so that you don’t reference a lot of things that feel like, oh, we’re laying pipe for, you know, an animated series or further movies. It should feel like things are being referenced for a reason.
"That, to me, has been the constant struggle: to make sure that none of these things are treated like either they’re a museum piece and we’re trying to honor them or they’re gratuitous and thrown in because, well, it’s a 'Star Wars' movie so you’ve got to put these things in. Everything has got to be essential to the characters in the film."

It's impossible to tell whether there was a begrudging tone to that last bit or if he's excited about it or what, but it raises the question of whether he and co-writer Lawrence Kasdan actually wanted to included references to other movies, TV shows, and events in the universe, or whether they were following a Lucasfilm mandate. With the behind-the-scenes stories between Joss Whedon and Marvel Studios still fresh on my mind, I'm looking at everything with a more suspicious eye than usual, because we didn't really hear too much about those battles until the movie hit theaters. Will we eventually hear about similar disagreements between J.J. and Lucasfilm, or is the Force strong with them? We'll find out soon, and I suspect there will be more Star Wars-related news this week as the full interview comes online.

Earlier today, we heard that Tom Hardy is interested in playing The Punisher in a new movie. We can only hope that the people at Marvel agree, cast him immediately, and use this Fox Animation Domination HD video (AND NOTHING ELSE) as the template for that film. I can see it now...

His family was murdered in cold blood. He turned justice into Punishment. He makes bad plays on words. He is: The Pun-isher.

Tom Cruise and Chris McQuarrie Tease MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE ROGUE NATION Action Scenes

Mission: Impossible Rogue Nation is one of my most anticipated movies of the summer, and I can't wait to see how the globe-spanning spy franchise moves forward under the direction of director Chris McQuarrie. The filmmaker and star Tom Cruise sat down with Yahoo UK to talk a little about the film, and the duo revealed some interesting aspects about the movie that we hadn't heard before:

Cruise: "We have something I’ve always wanted to do: an underwater sequence without cuts. The kind of training I had to do for that was pretty intense. I’ve done a lot of underwater scenes but I’ve never done one [like this] that will get the audience to lean forward and have a visceral reaction."

That sounds awesome. I can't wait to see what kind of insanity they've cooked up here. The plane sequence (which you can see a part of in the trailer) looks bonkers, especially considering that Cruise himself actually strapped on and hung on to the side of the plane as it took off. The mega-star mentioned why he felt the need to do his own stunts:

"There was no question the [plane] stunt was always going to be me. When you look at Harold Lloyd and Charlie Chaplin and Buster Keaton - when I see the practical things they did as an audience - it brought me more into a subjective reality of the characters in those stories. If you look at the CIA sequence in ‘Mission 1’ – if someone else did it the audience isn’t invested in it."

He has a point there. And as for McQuarrie, how will he attempt to live up to the action and iconic sequences that already exist in this series?

“I asked myself ‘what can I do to celebrate all those elements of the franchise?’ A signature sequence the way (Brian) De Palma did, a villain the way JJ Abrams did, the stunts the way Brad did. You’ll see references to all those films throughout the movie. There’s [also] a real Easter Egg for anyone who notices it – it’s almost a reverse of something from one of the earlier movies.”

Did you notice how he didn't mention John Woo's name in that list? Man, Mission: Impossible II can't even get any love from its' own franchise directors. Oh well. I still dig that movie.

And finally, remember the motorcycle scene we caught a glimpse of in the trailer (pictured above)? That was apparently one of the toughest things to shoot:

Cruise: “It was physically the most grueling sequence. We’re going at very high speed with Simon Pegg as my passenger, drifting it through very narrow streets with cameras on [the bike]. I’m not wearing a helmet or pads, and at one point I’m highsiding a guy. It was hairy actually. I come up and I hit him and he is in the air doing it live. It was intense.”
McQuarrie: “That’s part of a much larger sequence that takes place in Morocco. We built camera equipment for this movie specifically to shoot this sequence. It’s stuff that’s never been done before.”

Mission: Impossible Rogue Nation hits theaters on July 31st. Are you excited to see what Cruise and company have in store for us?

Marvel and Sony Have a List of Directors to Helm SPIDER-MAN

It doesn't look like The Cabin in the Woods director Drew Goddard will be directing the new Spider-Man film franchise after all. It was rumored a couple months ago that he would be writing and directing the film, but now Deadline has posted a list of new directors that Marvel and Sony are looking at to possibly take on the next solo Spider-Man film.

Those directors include Jonathan Levine (50/50,Warm Bodies); Ted Melfi (St. Vincent)Jason Moore (Pitch Perfect); John Francis Daley and Jonathan M. Goldstein (Vacation reboot); and Jared Hess (Napoleon Dynamite).

I think all of these directors are solid choices. They've all made great films in their day, but if I had to choose one I'd go with Jonathan Levine, he just seems to have a lot of range. He's directed comedy, drama, and genre films so I think he has the talent to inject all of the things that would make Spider-Man a great movie.

The film is said to be getting the title Spider-Man: The First Avenger, and apparently there is a story arc being planned over the course of three or four movies, each of them covering a year of high school for Peter Parker. Thankfully, it will skip the origin story. The tone producers are looking for is said to be a coming of age story filled with John Hughes type humor and emotion.

Which director on the list would you like to see take on the project?

I’ve had a lot of fun playing Disney Infinity with my kids since they got it for Christmas. It’s a fun video game with a huge universe that is both entertaining and challenging. The game features many of the vast worlds created by Disney, Pixar, and Marvel. Now Star Wars is about to join the party, and my kids and I couldn’t be more excited!

Disney Infinity 3.0 will expand the universe into a galaxy far, far away, and today we have a trailer and behind the scenes featurette showing us what we can expect. As you’ll see, there are plenty of great things that will be included that fans and kids can enjoy.

Bat in the Sun has released their latest episode of Super Power Beat Down, and it offers us the ultimate battle to the death between the Green Ranger from Power Rangers and Ryu from Street Fighter. It’s an extremely entertaining and action-packed fight to watch, but what really makes it pop is that the original Green Ranger, Jason David Frank, reprises his role! This video is an adrenaline shot of '90s nostalgia that you’re going to love, and I wouldn’t have it end any other way.

Marvel has released a new poster for Ant-Man featuring Paul Rudd as the hero surrounded by his friends and enemies. It's not the greatest poster in the world as it just features a bunch of images we've already seen slapped together in Photoshop, but I'm still pumped up for the movie! It just looks like such a blast.

In Ant-Man, Hank Pym (Michael Douglas) approaches master thief Scott Lang (Paul Rudd) with a suit that grants him the ability to shrink in size but increases his strength! Scott must embrace his inner hero and put the suit to good use and save the world under Pym's leadership.

Ant-Man also stars Corey Stoll, Evangeline Lilly, David Dastmalchian, Michael Pena, Bobby Cannavale, Abby Ryder Fortson, Judy Greer, Wood Harris, John Slattery, and Gregg Turkington. The film opens July 17, 2015. Check out the trailer below!
