katee-sackhoff-created-a-new-sci-fi-series-that-shell-star-in-called-rain

Battlestar Galactica star Katee Sackhoff is set to star in a futuristic sci-fi drama that she created  and wrote called RainThis show sounds like it has serious potential, and it deals with some popular topics of discussion regarding the environment, the world we live in, and a fictional future that our current way of living could lead to.

According to Deadline, the show is an "evolutionary parable that gives us a look into our possible future as a species viewed through the eyes of a soldier named Rain (Sackhoff). It explores how the long-term effects of global warming, the burning of fossil fuels and the scientific manipulation of nature’s balance rot the world and contribute to its decline."

The series is being produced by Reunion Pictures, and producer Tom Rowe said this in a statement:

“With Rain, Katee has created a future world and a story that are compelling as both a sweeping vision and a very personal exploration of a civilization in harrowing decline by its own hand. She has written a great story and we are excited to be working with her.”

Sackhoff added:

“It’s great to be in business with Reunion and Thunderbird. Their credentials in the genre are outstanding and they share my vision in telling a story that means a lot to me.”

The actress currently co-stars in the drama Longmire, which is headed to Netflix. She was most recently seen in the awesome Joseph Khan-directed "Power/Rangers" short that took the Internet by storm last month. I'm excited to see how this next project of hers progresses.

The mythical creature Pegasus has been created out of machine parts by Iranian artist Hasan Novrozi. The way details like muscles, feathers, and hair are synthesized is the work of genius. I think GeekTyrant's new headquarters needs one of Novrozi's creations.

James Gunn Says GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY 2 Is About Fathers

james-gunn-says-guardians-of-the-galaxy-2-story-is-about-fathers

We are about to close out Phase 2 of Marvel’s cinematic universe with Avengers: Age of Ultron and open up Phase 3 with Ant-Man. Phase 3 is going to take fans down a crazy awesome road, and we are going to be introduced to a lot of new superheroes. One of the films I’m looking forward to most is Guardians of the Galaxy 2. I just loved that first film so much, and I’m excited to see what James Gunn does with these characters in the next chapter of the story.

Vulture recently caught up with the director on the red carpet of Age of Ultron, and they asked him about the sequel that he’s currently working on. In his reply he said that the next film is about fathers.

“At its heart, Guardians is a story about families, and if the first film was about him and his mother, this is a story about fathers. So it’s exciting to go there… Listen, I’m still excited about Star-Lord’s character and where he goes.”

He goes on to explain that he knew what the story of the second film would be for a long time. Then adds, “and a third one!” I think that it’s great that the director planned out an entire three film storylines before he even made the first film. Who knows, maybe he’ll add on a few more chapters for these characters.

Guardians of the Galaxy 2 is scheduled to begin production at Pinewood Atlanta in February of 2016 and is set to hit the big screen May 5th, 2017.

If you didn't think these Hulkbuster action figures we've been seeing for Avengers: Age of Ultron could get any cooler, then check this out! Comicave Studios' has released a four-foot tall quarter-scale Iron Man Hulkbuster figure. What sets this one apart from the others is the fact that it features extensive articulation and animatronic armor that opens and closes! When it automatically opens up, it reveals the Iron Man Mark 43 armor inside.

This is still just in the prototype stages, but when it is released, I'm sure it will come with a hefty price tag. You can check it out in action in the video below.

IGN was able to interview writer/director Paul Feig about the development of the Ghostbusters reboot coming in 2016 that stars Melissa McCarthy, Kristen Wiig, Leslie Jones, and Kate McKinnon. Feig said of the recent announcement of a Ghostbusters cineverse:

"That has nothing to do with us. That was a real surprise when that announcement came out… We're just doing our thing and I can't let that affect me. I don't know how real it is."

Wow! I think Feig knows that if his film isn't successful that a cineverse is not even possible. I hope that forcing one to happen doesn't result in a lesser film. Feig talks about who brings the team together and who "leads:"

"It's an ensemble, but at the same time you need the one person that brings you into the group [who is Wiig's character],
"Melissa is sort of the leader of the group, but everybody will be equal. I just love a deep bench like this. Every one of those women is strong and so funny. The hardest thing is going to be… keeping all of their stuff in the movie."

The original Ghostbusters had a pretty balanced dynamic in the team, so it will be interesting to see how this new one works. In the full video interview Feig talks about using test audiences to help shape his films' final edit and writing the script.

Actor Jamie Costa has compiled 20 of this best impressions of Robin Williams characters, which not only honor the late actor's work but are spot-on. The fact that Williams transformed so much for his roles is the only reason Costa is able to do so many impressions, Williams was an actor with true range. Costa is pretty prolific with his impressions on Vine, and he's got a few complications and reels on his YouTube channel.

That last trailer for Terminator Genysis revealed a ton of crazy details regarding certain plot points in the film that a lot of us didn’t see coming. It sure did open up a conversation with fans, and I don’t know about you, but it got me even more excited about the film. At this point, who knows what will happen in the film? It seems anything is possible. There are some really interesting doors that it opens.

A new international TV spot has been released that offers up some more footage from the movie. Terminator Genisys is the first of a planned trilogy. I’m already intrigued by the trailers, and it will be fun to see how the full story plays out.

The story is set in 2029, “when the Future War is raging and a group of human rebels has the evil artificial-intelligence system Skynet on the ropes. John Connor (Dawn of the Planet of the Apes’ Jason Clarke) is the leader of the resistance, and Kyle Reese (Divergent‘s Jai Courtney) is his loyal soldier, raised in the ruins of post apocalyptic California. As in the original film, Connor sends Reese back to 1984 to save Connor’s mother, Sarah (Game of Thrones‘ Emilia Clarke), from a Terminator programmed to kill her so that she won’t ever give birth to John. But what Reese finds on the other side is nothing like he expected.”

The movie opens in theaters on July 1st. You can also go through our screenshots and analysis of the previous trailer here

Artist James Hance is the creator of Wookie the Chew, which is a Star Wars inspired reimagining of Winnie the Pooh. We've posted several illustrations from the art series over the years, and I just came across this wonderfully animated sequence that brings Wookie the Chew to life. The animation was created by Billy Allison, and apparently they plan on turning it into a movie. If they actually did that, I think it would be pretty awesome.

The clips from Avengers: Age of Ultron continue to roll in! This latest clip, which premiered on Ellen, is one of the funniest clips I've seen from the film so far. So if you're looking for a little humor from the film, then this is the clip that's going to give it to you.

In the scene Black Widow is trying to get Bruce Banner to trust her. She brings Thor into the conversation by asking for a report on Hulk, and his amazing response doesn't help the situation, "The gates of hell are filled with the screams of his victims!" Then when he tries to make the situation better, it gets even worse. Enjoy!

"The Big Wild North" is a great adventure short that follows a young boy who is recuperating after a horrific accident. To help cheer him up, his uncle and aunt take him out on a weekend camping excursion. While on the trip, the boy decides to go out and explore the woods. Little does he know that this little journey is going to turn into an adventure he'll never forget. The short was directed by Tom Antos, and it just goes to show what aspiring filmmakers can do with hardly any budget or crew. I hope you enjoy it.

Walt Disney’s Connection to TOMORROWLAND Explained in Featurette

Disney has released two new videos for Brad Bird’s amazing looking sci-fi film Tomorrowland. One of the most interesting aspects about the film is that Walt Disney and the theme parks he created exist in the world where the story takes place.

His involvement was hinted at very early on in the film's development, when Bird and co-writer Damon Lindelof revealed a mystery box found in the archives of Disney that supposedly held the keys to a secret that Disney was holding.

It seems Walt Disney had a huge impact on the story created for this movie, and now we have a featurette that centers on his connections to it. I’ve also included another featurette in which the cast and crew discuss the futuristic world of Tomorrowland.

A former boy-genius (George Clooney) and a gifted teenager (Britt Robertson) set out on a dangerous mission to unearth the secrets of "Tomorrowland," an enigmatic location caught between time and space.

The movie comes out in theaters on May 22nd.

Reclaim Your Childhood with the Help of We Hunt For Junk

reclaim-your-childhood-with-the-help-of-we-hunt-for-junk

There's a Facebook page that was recently pointed out to me called We Hunt For Junk. It's in the early stages of development, but it's a really fun idea that I think has a lot of potential. One of the things I enjoy doing when I go to the big geek conventions is look at old toys and action figures that bring back memories of when I was a kid. Just this last WonderCon I came across a G.I. Joe Conquest X-30 jet that had never been taken out of the box. I talked to my wife and kids and told them how it was one of my favorite toys growing up. Well, my wife snuck off later that day and surprised me when she bought it for me. How awesome is that?!

The old 70s, 80s, and 90s toys that we see at these conventions come from somewhere. There are people out there dedicated to looking for these things. The guys behind We Hunt For Junk are trying to reclaim their childhood (and possibly yours) one product at a time. They go out on the road hunting down old toys, games, video games, comic books, clothes, and other stuff you grew up with.

If there is anything in particular that you are looking for you can reach out to these guys via Facebook, Twitter or their website, and tell them. When they go out on their hunting excursions they will try and track down what you are looking for. They just recently bought a collection of original Star Wars toys for only $15.

There is more to come from We Hunt For Junk as they are now in the process of starting a YouTube page with them talking about the things they find and video of them out on their journeys. They will also feature tips on where you can find stuff yourself and other items that may be worth more than you thought.

Like I said, there's a lot of potential here. I love what they are doing and how they are opening it to people like you and me. I already have them on the hunt for a Captain Power toy set. Make sure to like them Facebook, and follow them Twitter

As you might already know, I've done a lot of vintage toy lists for the site, so you know that this kind of stuff really connects with me. Yesterday, we posted a rumor that a teaser for Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice would premiere online tomorrow at 9am Pacific Time. This 5-second (120 frame) tease would also coincide with the ability to watch the full trailer in theaters on Monday.

The British Board of Film Classification has officially classified and approved the full length trailer confirming that it's coming soon. It's classified 12a (I'm not sure what that means) and is two-minutes and six-seconds long.

This news also confirms the rumor that the full trailer will be attached to Avengers: Age of Ultron, which starts to hit theaters internationally on the 22nd.

The trailer is coming, yeah!!!

Here's a video that celebrates some of the best animated feature films that Marvel has developed over the years. Like many of you, I've been a fan of Disney since I was a little kid. Every time I revisit those films, and even when I watch the new ones, that kid in me just comes jumping out. It's great, especially since I get to share that childlike experience with my own kids. The video was created by CLS Videos, and it does a perfect job of capturing the magic of Disney Animation.

Matthew Vaughn In Talks to Direct FLASH GORDON

Matthew Vaughn, the director of films such as Kick-Ass, X-Men: First Class, and Kingsman: The Secret Service, is currently in negotiations to direct the Flash Gordon reboot! If anyone can make a badass Flash Gordon movie, it's Vaughn. I really enjoy his directing and storytelling style. It's very unique, and bringing that uniqueness to the Flash Gordon universe would be amazing.

20th Century Fox picked up the rights to the classic comic about a year ago with the help of producer John Davis, who spent more than a year trying to get the rights from the Hearst Corporation. Seeing that Vaughn has a solid relationship with the studio, I'm pretty sure this will end up being a done deal.

Flash Gordon was created in 1934 by artist Alex Raymond, and the sci-fi adventurer follows the title character who ends up on a planet called Mongo with Dale Arden and a mad scientist named Hans Zasrkov. While there, they battle the planet's tyrannical ruler, Ming the Merciless.

The script for the film was written by J.D. Payne and Patrick McKay (Star Trek 3). It was recently reported that the movie might end up being a sequel to the classic 1980 movie, but that has yet to be confirmed. I'd rather them just start from scratch, but we'll see how it plays out. What do you all think of the possibility of Vaughn helming this project?

MORTAL KOMBAT X is a Blood-Soaked Masterpiece

MKX_Fight

There was a ginormous amount of hype surrounding the release of the latest Mortal Kombat title. Netherrealm spared no expense pumping out glossy, high-end trailers and marketing material to tease our fighting game taste buds. The question is, does the final product of Mortal Kombat X live up to the hype? My answer is a resounding HELL YES!

I'm a die hard MK fan, as I've stated many times here on GeekTyrant. I've even gone so far as to proclaim myself as GT's Mortal Kombat expert. My obsession for this series runs very, very deep. But my love for this new title goes beyond that. Not only is this the best MK game to date, it is easily one of the most well polished and tightly refined pieces of gaming software I've seen for the new generation of consoles. So many fine details were added to this game to make it feel fresh and alive. Big things, like stunning graphics and hauntingly beautiful set pieces. To minor details, such as two-player matches starting with unique taunts depending upon not only what characters are fighting, but what costumes they are wearing. So much love was poured into this gore-fest that it is bursting at the seams.

Aside from the tight controls, diverse cast of characters, and crowd enthralling spectacles we've all come to expect from the series, MKX takes a page from 2011's reboot to the series and makes story a very integral part of the game. And oh boy do they knock it out of the park on this one! The storytelling in this game rivals that of big budget summer blockbusters. The characters feel rich and alive, each with their own flawed pasts and motivations. It has been a friggin' dream watching the story I love told in front of a broader audience with so much passion behind it. And this rebooted timeline is great for life long fans of the lore of Mortal Kombat, like myself. Without giving too much away, as you really need to witness this story for yourself, my love for Scorpion has probably quadrupled due to the way he was handled in this game. The journey of Hanzo Hasashi will forever be one of my favorite stories in gaming. And the post-credits scene lends itself to one hell of a sequel.

So if you're wondering if you should buy Mortal Kombat X — maybe you've been on the fence and just couldn't quite part with the $60 — stop wondering. This game is amazing! And the replay-ability is off the charts. The constantly updating challenge towers with unique rewards and the Krypt being reinvented as an old-school first-person RPG means that even when you're not beating the crap out of the worst the Netherrealm has to offer, you'll be having a gore-tastic good time. Mortal Kombat X was one flawless victory for Ed Boon and his crew!

Vincent D'Onofrio Gives A Classic Villain Performance In DAREDEVIL

$
0
0

First off, if you're reading this and you haven't watched Daredevil on Netflix, go do it. This show is well written, well acted, and (while I may be digging a grave here) honestly the first Superhero show deserving of an Emmy for best new series. It's that good, you don't need more research, watch it already.

As well as Charlie Cox dons the role of Matt Murdock, no one steals the spotlight in terms of acting, in my opinion, as Vincent D'Onofrio does. When I think of Wilson Fisk/Kingpin, I typically think back to the animated Spider-Man series of the '90s. Given that limited analysis of a '90s cartoon character, my general assumption of Kingpin is merely a wealthy, bald, strong, and clever man.

Essentially, he was written as a boring, strong, rich white guy. There's not a lot to that and, really, any schmuck off the street could've done that and the series wouldn't have suffered from the interpretation. The Daredevil writing staff really threw me a curve ball with their interpretation. They took a risk with the character and changed some elements, and I'll be damned if D'Onofrio didn't take off with the role and make it his own.

Let's be honest, very little of us knew who D'Onofrio is, and if many of us were asked who would play Fisk when the series was first cast, we would've gone with the same answer...

We can all imagine already how Breaking Bad's Dean Norris would've played the role, and like I said before, that's good enough for what you would expect from the stereotypical portrayal of Kingpin. I applaud D'Onofrio for his taking on the character, making it his own.

This new Kingpin is an introvert. His socially awkward behavior comes through so hard early on it made me uncomfortable in my own skin. At the same time, he's also incredibly smooth in his soft speech that you get the sense the gears are always turning with every word. Seeing him unbelievably calm in a scene where everything seems to be falling apart, but awkwardly stumbling through a first date is a uniquely human element that consistently gets forgotten in the portrayal of villains. It makes him feel like a real man, not just a comic book come to life, and I really cannot express just how much I like that.

Just a few episodes in and I'm engrossed with this character on a level that was only skin deep in past iterations, and then I'm hit with the violence in Episode 4. It's awesome as I'd began to accept that this new Wilson Fisk was perhaps a corporate figurehead not looking to dirty his hands and then WHAM! I'm like, "Holy s*** this is a bad man!" It's this blending of the two sides that I think D'Onofrio really embodies so well and continues to balance throughout the series. Even in his calm moments, he carries himself as though the crazed mad man is bubbling just beneath the surface, ready to snap at a moment's notice.

The writers also let us understand his character's psychology more so than other villains I've liked this year, like Flash's Wentworth Miller a.k.a. Leonard Snart/Captain Cold. Fisk grew up in an unforgiving environment and truly survives and wishes to make a difference the way he sees as most effective. That's real. That's what we as humans essentially do day in and day out, so while you may think the guy is off the rails crazy, you understand the pathos. You at least understand it more than Snart refusing to leave Coast City "cuz".

I think what the writing staff and Vincent D'Onofrio really set out to do is make you draw parallels between Matt Murdock and Wilson Fisk. They are very much working towards the same goal, ultimately, but in wildly different ways. I've never considered this to be true in past versions of Daredevil, but they laid it out for me in less than half a season.

I put D'Onofrio's portrayal of Kingpin in season one of Daredevil right up there with Tom Hiddleston as Loki, and Heath Ledger as Joker. He made me change the way I thought about a well established character enough to make him matter to me. He may not have been the only piece of the puzzle when it comes to Daredevil's success, but he is a damn important one in my opinion.
