hayao-miyazaki-inspired-animated-short-these-and-those-treetop-and-heaven

I have a beautifully animated short film for you to watch today called "Celles et Ceux des Cimes et Cieux (These and Those Treetop and Heaven)." It was created by Gwenn Germain, who says it was inspired by the work of Hayao Miyazaki, Jean Girault, and Syd Mead. You can definitely see the influence of those artists in this short. Here's a brief story summary:

A young boy who lives in a village on a giant tree, fall in the depth of the forest where he meets two strange natives who will help him to go back home.

Dane DeHaan Joins Gore Verbinski's Horror Film A CURE FOR WELLNESS

Gore Vebinski’s career blew up when he directed The Ring back in 2002, and after directing three Pirates of the Caribbean films, Rango, and The Lone Ranger, he’s jumping back into the horror genre. The move is called A Cure For Wellness, and it’s being written by Justin Haythe (Revolutionary Road).

Dane DeHaan (The Amazing Spider-Man 2) has joined the cast of the movie. According to THR, the movie tells the story of an employee (DeHaan) “who is sent to rescue his boss from a European ‘wellness spa’ but soon realizes he's trapped, and discovers that the facility has a more sinister purpose than just serving the health needs of its patients."

A young actress named Mia Goth (Nymphomaniac: Vol. II) is also in negotiations to join the project. If cast, she will will play “a longtime patient who is oblivious to the spa director's dark designs for her.”

It will be nice to see Verbinski make another horror movie, and this one sounds like it will be a great project for him. Production is set to start in Europe in June.

Fantastic Four star Kate Mara has been cast in the Ridley Scott produced sci-fi drama Morgan. Also joining the film is Anya Taylor-Joy, who is a young actress who blew audiences away with her performance in the Sundance hit The Witch.

Anya Taylor-Joy3388448

The movie will be directed by Scott’s son Luke Scott from a script written by Seth Owens. According to THR, the story centers around “a corporate risk management consultant who is summoned to a remote research lab to determine whether or not to terminate an at-risk artificial being.”

This will be Luke Scott’s first time directing a feature film. He previously directed a short film called "Loom," and worked with his dad as the second unit director on Exodus: Gods and Kings

This could be a really interesting project. The actresses they’ve cast are extremely talented, so we know that the acting will at least be solid.

Let's start the week off right with an extended 90-second clip from Avengers: Age of Ultron! The clip premiered during the MTV Movie Awards last night, and it features an action-packed scene in which we watch Hulk chaotically fight Tony Stark in his Hulkbuster armor, which has some pretty radical features. This is just a little taste of what we're in store for when we go see this flick.

Avengers: Age of Ultron was screened for several members of the press last week, and everything that I've seen and heard so far has been extremely positive, which really isn't that surprising. I think we all know the movie is going to be amazing, and we'll be able to watch it for ourselves when it's released in theaters on May 1st!

Kickass New Trailer for TERMINATOR GENISYS!

We've got an exciting second full trailer for you to watch for Terminator Genisys, and it looks pretty damn awesome! This might actually be the Terminator film that fans have been waiting for. It's full of new footage and action-packed greatness, but there's one part in which Arnold Schwarznegger busts out this ridiculous smile that I thought was amusing.

I also included a new Game of Thrones inspired promo spot for the film in which Emilia Clarke transforms from the Mother of Dragons to the Mother of Resistance. It begins with the Iron Throne turning into liquid metal and then reforming as Sarah Conner ready to kick some ass.

The beginning of Terminator Genisys, the first of three planned films that Paramount hopes will relaunch the beloved sci-fi franchise, is set in 2029, when the Future War is raging and a group of human rebels has the evil artificial-intelligence system Skynet on the ropes. John Connor (Dawn of the Planet of the Apes’ Jason Clarke) is the leader of the resistance, and Kyle Reese (Divergent‘s Jai Courtney) is his loyal soldier, raised in the ruins of post apocalyptic California. As in the original film, Connor sends Reese back to 1984 to save Connor’s mother, Sarah (Game of Thrones‘ Emilia Clarke), from a Terminator programmed to kill her so that she won’t ever give birth to John. But what Reese finds on the other side is nothing like he expected.

The movie will be released on July 1st.

Marvel Confirms Teenage Peter Parker/Spider-Man and No Origin Story

It’s been rumored for a couple of months that the next onscreen iteration of Spider-Man will be a teenage version of Peter Parker. That rumor is now confirmed to be 100% true. During an interview with Collider, Marvel President Kevin Feige said that they are looking to cast someone around the age of 15-16 years old and explained that he wants to take advantage of Parker’s high school life to tell some Spider-Man stories that haven’t been told on the big screen yet. Here’s the quote:

“In terms of the age of an actor we’ll eventually to cast, I don’t know. In terms of the age of what we believe Peter Parker is, I’d say 15-16 is right… [S]ome of my favorite Spider-Man arcs and Spider-Man stories, he’s in high school for a lot of it. We want to explore that. That also makes him very, very different from any of our other characters in the MCU, which is something else we want to explore: how unique he is when now put against all these other characters.”

There were early rumors of a seasoned Spider-Man being introduced into the Marvel cinematic universe, which is an idea that I liked. We’ve seen the origin story of Spider-Man twice already. Thankfully, they will skip that part of the story moving forward. Obviously, Marvel has some fun ideas to play with for the character, and I trust that they’ll deliver something fans will be happy with. In an interview with Crave Online Feige explained,

“There is a young kid [already] running around New York City in a homemade version of the Spider-Man costume in the MCU. You just don’t know it yet… In Spider-Man’s very specific case, where there have been two retellings of that origin in the last whatever it’s been – [thirteen] years – for us we are going to take it for granted that people know that, and the specifics.”

In regards the the costume he added,

“We’ve already designed the costume, which is different than any of the ones that have come before. And yet ours is classic Spidey, as I think you’ll see.”

Peter was only in high school for the first 28 issues of the original The Amazing Spider-Man comic, but Brian Michael Bendis’s Ultimate Spider-Man was completely set during the characters high school days. I imagine they’ll be using that as their inspiration.

They have yet to officially announce an actor for the role, but it’s expected to come soon. He will be introduced into the MCU in Anthony and Joe Russo’s upcoming Captain America: Civil War, which is set for release on May 6th, 2016. He’ll then get his own solo film, written and directed by Drew Goddard. That film is set for release on July 28th, 2017.

Marvel Studios has released a new full trailer for Ant-Man, and if you're not excited about the movie yet, then this trailer just might help you get there! It's packed to the brim with more radical footage that contains cool visuals, awesome action with Ant-Man fighting Yellowjacket, and some very funny humor. There's a model train scene at the end of the trailer that is fantastic.

I know Ant-Man isn't the most popular character in the Marvel universe, but this movie looks like it's going to be freakin' entertaining!

The next evolution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe brings a founding member of The Avengers to the big screen for the first time with Marvel Studios’ “Ant-Man.” Armed with the astonishing ability to shrink in scale but increase in strength, master thief Scott Lang must embrace his inner-hero and help his mentor, Dr. Hank Pym, protect the secret behind his spectacular Ant-Man suit from a new generation of towering threats. DEADPOOL Photo from Ryan Reynolds Features Negasonic Teenage Warhead

Ryan Reynolds has released a new photo from the set of Deadpool featuring himself in full costume along with our first look at newcomer Brianna Hildebrand as Negasonic Teenage Warhead. The image came along with the following caption:

“Negasonic Teenage Wat-The-Shit?!”

Negasonic Teenage Warhead was created by Grant Morrison in his New X-Men comic run, and she was killed off shortly after she was introduced. The character later returned as a psychic projection created by Emma Frost while Joss Whedon was writing Astonishing X-Men.

The character is a telepath with precognitive abilities. It looks like they stuck pretty closely to the comic book version of the character, but it will be interesting to see what role she’ll play in the story for this film.

After the the Imperial forces from Star Wars battled the U.S.S. Enterprise over San Francisco, they made their way down to Los Angeles to cause even more destructive chaos. Now is the time for the Jedis of L.A. to rise up and take back their city, which is being destroyed! The video was created by YouTube user Kaipotainment, and I hope you enjoy it. I thought it was funny that the famous "Hollywood" sign was replaced with "Disney." At the rate Disney is going, I'm sure one day that will happen for real.

I don't know about you, but I've already binge-watched Marvel's Daredevil twice on Netflix, and it was awesome! If you haven't started watching it yet, you really need to. It's one of the best things Marvel has produced.

As I'm sure you're aware, the series is loaded with Easter eggs and references to Marvel comics and the cinematic universe. it wasn't until the second time I watch it that I was able to notice a lot of that stuff. Thanks to Mr. Sunday Movies, we have a video that points out the connections to other heroes, villains, comics, and storylines and the Stan Lee cameo.

The video does contain SPOILERS, so if you're not finished watching the series, or haven't started it yet, you might want to avoid this.

SCREAM Series Trailer - “You Can’t Do a Slasher Movie as a TV Series”

scream-series-trailer-you-cant-do-a-slasher-movie-as-a-tv-series

MTV has released the first trailer for their upcoming Scream TV series. The trailer features a lot of familiar elements from the film franchise, including young teens alone being stalked by a killer, bloody death, and of course, meta commentary on the horror genre, like how you can't do a slasher movie as a TV series. As much as I have enjoyed the Scream franchise over the years, this new series looks like a dud.

The series stars Willa Fitzgerald as Emma Duvall, described as “a classic beauty whose looks and popularity hide a natural shyness and intellectual nature. Her new life with the ‘in crowd’ leaves her estranged from her childhood best friend, Audrey (Bex Taylor-Klaus).” Here’s the synopsis:

Everyone has secrets. Everyone tells lies. Everyone is fair game. The new series is based on the Dimension feature of the same name. The series kicks off after a cyber-bullying incident results in a brutal murder, with the shocking violence stirring up memories of a killing spree from the past that has haunted some, intrigued others and maybe just inspired a new killer. It centers on a group of new teens — with two old friends struggling to reconnect at its heart — who become lovers, enemies, suspects, targets and victims of a killer who’s out for blood.

The series will premiere on June 30th, 2015.

First Official Photo for the ROCKY Spinoff Movie CREED

Sylvester Stallone has shared the first official photo from his upcoming Rocky spinoff film, Creed. The image features Rocky in the middle of training Apollo Creed's son, Adonis Johnson, who is played by Michael B. Jordan. It came along with a brief caption that reads: "Get ready to go for it!"

I grew up watching the Rocky films, and I'm a big fan of the franchise. I never thought I'd see anymore of them after Rocky Balboa in 2006, but it's great that a way was found to keep the story and characters alive. I really like the fact that Rocky is coming in as a mentor and trainer to Creed's son. You can find some additional details on the film in this synopsis:

Adonis Johnson (Jordan) never knew his famous father, world heavyweight champion Apollo Creed, who died before he was born. Still, there’s no denying that boxing is in his blood, so Adonis heads to Philadelphia, the site of Apollo Creed’s legendary match with a tough upstart named Rocky Balboa.
Once in the City of Brotherly Love, Adonis tracks Rocky (Stallone) down and asks him to be his trainer. Despite his insistence that he is out of the fight game for good, Rocky sees in Adonis the strength and determination he had known in Apollo—the fierce rival who became his closest friend. Agreeing to take him on, Rocky trains the young fighter, even as the former champ is battling an opponent more deadly than any he faced in the ring.
With Rocky in his corner, it isn’t long before Adonis gets his own shot at the title…but can he develop not only the drive but also the heart of a true fighter, in time to get into the ring?

Creed also stars Tessa Thompson (Selma, Dear White People) as Bianca, a local singer-songwriter who becomes involved with Adonis; Phylicia Rashad (Lifetime’s Steel Magnolias) as Mary Anne Creed, Apollo’s widow; and English pro boxer and former three-time ABA Heavyweight Champion Anthony Bellew as boxing champ “Pretty” Ricky Conlan.

Ryan Coogler (Fruitvale Station) is directing from a screenplay he wrote with Aaron Covington. It's set to hit the big screen November 25th.

Predator Vs. Knights Templar in Fan Film Trailer - PREDATOR: DARK AGES

I’ve got a trailer for a wicked cool looking Predator fan film for you to watch called "Predator: Dark Ages." The thought of Predator hunting people in the medieval age has crossed my mind before, but that concept has now been brought to life. The film was written and directed by James Bushe, and it seems like it will be an awesome and well-made short. Here’s the synopsis:

Set during the Crusades, the faith & fighting skills of a group of Templar Knights is put to the test when they encounter the Predator. Their battle is the thing Myths and Legends are born from.

This looks like it’s going to be an awesome fan film. The trailer does a good job of getting the idea across and getting audiences pumped up. I can’t wait to see the final product! The full short will be released end of April or early May. We’ll post it to the site as soon as it’s live!

Earlier this morning we posted an epic clip from Avengers: Age of Ultron of Hulk fighting Iron Man's Hulkbuster in the streets of South Africa. We now have two additional clips to add to the collection.

The first features a beautiful scene with Black Widow trying to calm down the Hulk, and it's amazing to see how much better the facial expressions have gotten with the green goliath. The second clip features the Avengers team questioning Tony Stark's Ultron creation, and how it could have been avoided.

The movie comes out on May 1st, and according to a lot of critics who have seen the film already, it's everything that we hope it will be.

Watch the Badass Single Take Fight Scene from DAREDEVIL and Learn How it Was Made

One of my favorite scenes in Marvel's Daredevil series was the final fight sequence at the end of Episode 2. The scene is a five and half minute continuous shot that features Daredevil taking on a gang of thugs in a hallway to rescue a boy, and it's one of the most insane fight sequences I've seen in a long time. It actually might by my favorite fight sequence in any of the Marvel movies I've seen so far. I love how brutal it is, and that our hero is portrayed as completely human, who gets extremely tired during the fight and has to take brief breaks before he gets back into kicking ass.

We have three minutes of that fight scene below for you to watch. After you watch the video we have a couple of quotes from showrunner Steven DeKnight and actor Charlie Cox on how that scene came about.

This is what DeKnight had to say about the scene in an interview with /Film:

"You know, when I first came onto the show, when I took over for Drew Goddard, who had to leave to do the Sinister Six movie, the first two episodes were written. So I got to the end of reading that Episode 2 thing and, you know, it was described as this long, continuous fight in a hallway. And I thought oh that’s great. I don’t know how the hell we’ll ever be able to do it, but that’s great. So the next key was our Stunt Coordinator and we hired Philip Silvera. If you remember the elevator sequence from Winter Soldier, he’s actually one of the guys in that sequence, which I didn’t know until much later. But he had worked with Marvel before. And he gave us a great test reel for the fight in the Episode 1 [sic]. He put together a little test and he said, that’s exactly it. I had always approached it this way as I wanted this world to be very grounded. So we wanted more Jason Bourne, The Raid movies and not a lot of flying wire CGI stunts. And then he was instrumental. He brought in a fantastic stunt guy, Chris Brewster, who doubled Chris Evans in The Winter Soldier. So he was our main double for Charlie for some of the more extreme stuff."

Cox is asked the same question and he reveals that is was in fact a single take shot:

"It was incredible. It was as a special day as it was to as the scene has turned out [sic]. We dedicated our whole day to it. The first half of the day was just the camera movements. And then we got into, it was as you know it’s one take, so we had to get everything right. Each attempt that we had at it. And it’s incredibly tricky because it’s not like a long tracking shot with two people speaking, it’s a long tracking shot with people punching. And if one punch doesn’t land, it no longer works. It ceases to work as a scene. So I think we did it 12 times. I think three of them we made it all the way through to the end. And one of them was the one in the show, which is kind of almost flawless. I mean, it’s very hard to pick holes in that."

Amazing.

Maybe when Disney is done promoting the hell out of Avengers: Age of Ultron they will start pushing the marketing more on Brad Bird's Tomorrowland. This movie looks spectacular, but I've noticed that there's not as much interest out there for it as I thought there would be. The movie has a great talented team behind it that not only consists of Bird, but also Damon Lindelof, George ClooneyHugh Laurie, and Britt Robertson. I'm really excited for this sci-fi adventure film, I love the mystery and intrigue behind it, and I hope that it's a success.

From Disney comes two-time Oscar® winner Brad Bird’s “Tomorrowland,” a riveting mystery adventure starring Academy Award® winner George Clooney. Bound by a shared destiny, former boy-genius Frank (Clooney), jaded by disillusionment, and Casey (Britt Robertson), a bright, optimistic teen bursting with scientific curiosity, embark on a danger-filled mission to unearth the secrets of an enigmatic place somewhere in time and space known only as “Tomorrowland.” What they must do there changes the world—and them—forever.

The movie is set to rocket into theaters on May 22nd.

The Evolution of Captain America's Uniform

$

Captain America’s transition from comic to screen uniquely parallels Steve Rogers’ own journey to becoming the “greatest soldier in history.” True to the character’s debut in 1941, Rogers’ story begins during World War II. Despite his small stature that deemed him unfit for military service, he possessed qualities beyond the physical. His bravery and compassion qualified him as the first and most successful recipient of Abraham Erskine's completed Super Soldier Serum, which granted Rogers peak-human capabilities. As Rogers’ role in World War II evolved, so did his uniform. And as he struggles to find his place in our modern world, after being awakened after 70 years frozen in the Antarctic, the needs of his uniform must adapt to fit his growing combat skills and the greater threats he faces.

Just as Captain America has been forced to adjust to through different eras and emerge in our modern day, concept artist Ryan Meinerding and his team have had to draw from over half a century of comics to conceptualize Joe Simon and Jack Kirby's iconic creation for the big-screen. From there, costume designers Anna B. Sheppard (Captain America: The First Avenger), Alexandra Byrne (The Avengers, Avengers: Age of Ultron), and Judianna Makovsky (Captain America: The Winter Soldier) work with their respective directors to further tailor and realize those concepts for an ever expanding cinematic universe and increasingly savvy and scrutinizing audience.

In anticipation of Chris Evans’ return as Captain America in Avengers: Age of Ultron, we explore the evolution of his uniforms throughout the Marvel films.

USO Uniform

“I finally got everything I wanted, and I’m wearing tights.”

Faced with being the subject of tests to replicate the Super Soldier Serum, Steve Rogers instead accepts an offer to serve his country on “the most important battlefield of the war” — a.k.a. using his newfound fame to help increase support for the war.

A nod to the classic Jack Kirby-designed costume from the original comics, this brightly colored [cotton] number — with its winged mask and shorts over tights — is worn by Rogers in fictionalized filmreels and in over 200 USO shows that prompt Americans to buy war bonds. Rogers initially uses the shield to hide notes that he could read while still learning his lines for the live shows.

Rogers last dawns the full stage uniform while performing for troops near the frontline in Italy, where he is heckled off stage.

Ad-Hoc Rescue Uniform

Upon learning that most of the men from his friend James “Bucky” Barnes’ unit were captured or killed by the forces of Johann Schmidt (a.k.a. the Red Skull), Rogers mounts a one-man rescue mission.

To make his USO costume less conspicuous, Rogers throws on a leather combat jacket, pants, and boots, and arms himself with his stage shield and an “A” helmet that he swipes from one of the “U-S-A” chorus girls. With the help of Agent Peggy Carter, Rogers is flown 30 miles behind enemy lines by arms dealer and Strategic Scientific Reserve engineer Howard Stark — future father of Tony Stark. The successful mission earns Rogers a Medal of Valor.

The look of the ad-hoc uniform borrows design elements from Bryan Hitch's WWII Captain America illustrations for Mark Millar’s The Ultimates comic series.

"Well if it isn't the 'Star-Spangled Man With A Plan.'"

Howard Stark Field Uniform

“Carbon polymer. Should withstand your average German bayonet.”

Recognizing the value in the imagery of his USO costume and its ability to allow him to lead, Rogers submits ideas for the design of his field uniform to Howard Stark. Stark makes Rogers’ uniform (and all of the Howling Commandos’ uniforms) with carbon polymer, a bullet and knife resistant fabric.

Stark also designs several shields for Rogers, who happens upon a prototype made out of the rarest metal on earth: vibranium, a completely vibration absorbent metal that is stronger than steel and a third its weight.

This is the uniform that Rogers wore the longest, as it was what he was wearing when he was frozen for 70 years after crash landing the Red Skull's jet into the Antarctic.

Avengers Uniform

With design input from S.H.I.E.L.D. agent Phil Coulson, an avid collector of WWII era Captain America memorabilia, Rogers’ Avengers Uniform evokes the spirit of his classic stars and stripes USO costume, but brings the brightly-colored look into the 21st century with modern materials and functionality. The uniform's design is unique in its use of exposed zippers (up the abdomen and on his legs). And while the lightly armored uniform is also the most aerodynamic of all his outfits, it’s the only one that doesn’t allow him to strap his shield to his back.

As evidenced in the uniform display photo near the top of the page, a heavily textured and open-eared helmet design was close to being used for the film (see alternate below). The final version of the helmet closely resembles Cap's mask from Marvel's Earth 616 universe. The uniform is last worn during the Battle of New York.

"With everything that's happening, the things that are about to come to light, people might just need a little old fashioned."

the-evolution-of-captain-americas-uniform-avengers-3.jpg

S.H.I.E.L.D. Stealth Uniform

"I thought you were more than just a shield."

Inspired by the look of the character's costume in the Steve Rogers: Super Soldier comics, Captain Rogers' S.H.I.E.L.D. issued Stealth Uniform is dark blue with silver stripes across his chest and muted red stripes that run down the side of his ribs to his knees. On covert missions the red stripes on his shield are also painted blue.

The bullet-proof nomex and kevlar uniform represents the latest in military war apparel while, according to the directors, thematically it is "an expression of the new soldier [Rogers] was trying to be." The uniform also features a communicator in his right glove, straps the allow him to magnetically latch his shield to his back, and is the first to feature an open ear design for his mask/helmet. The uniform is last worn during his escape from S.H.I.E.L.D. headquarters.

Smithsonian Modified Field Uniform

After learning HYDRA has operated within S.H.I.E.L.D. for decades, Rogers sheds all ties to the organization and steals a modified version of the uniform he wore during World Ward II on display at The Smithsonian. There are many subtle differences between this and the original field uniform — from the different colored strapping in the chest and shoulders to the reinforced knees, differently designed belt, and embossed helmet graphics. But the most obvious difference is the addition of a third red stripe down the abdomen.

With the design differences, and since the fabric of this uniform is susceptible to knives and gunfire — unlike the carbon polymer used in Howard Stark’s design — one could conclude that this is a non-functional replica. However, Marvel President Kevin Feige suggests that Rogers presumably had multiple uniforms throughout WWII.

“If you're gonna fight a war, you got to wear a uniform.”

Tony Stark Avengers Uniform

In Avengers: Age of Ultron, Steve Rogers may be the boss, but Tony Stark pays for everything and designs everything, including Rogers’ first post-S.H.I.E.L.D uniform. And in typical Stark fashion, Rogers is given some hi-tech upgrades to his uniform and shield.

Much like Thor’s ability to summon his hammer, Rogers can call back his shield, which now electromagnetically attaches to his gauntlet.

Aesthetically, it marries the modern utilitarian look and functionality of his Stealth Uniform with the more obvious red, white, and blue iconography of his original field and Avengers outfits.

"Show 'em what we got."
