I'm currently in the middle of watching Marvel's Daredevil series, and so far the show has been incredibly badass! The fight sequences in this thing are brutal and insane. One of them might just be one of the most hardcore fight scenes I've ever seen. It's the one at the end of episode two, so if you've seen it, then you know what I'm talking about.

The sci-fi, horror, and fantasy genre film festival FilmQuest has been listed by MovieMaker Magazine in its "Top 50 Film Festivals Worth the Entry Fee." Many of the short films we've posted on GeekTyrant have often won several awards by the time we've found them, so even as interconnected as the web is getting, exposure at a film festival is a great way to bring attention to your project. Here’s a slick looking series of superhero character art featuring several of our favorite kick-ass female comic book characters. The portraits created by artist Karl Liversidge a.k.a. SourAcid have a stylish and cool vibe. 

Just a couple weeks ago we posted news that Matt Smith might be the lead star in the Harry Potter spin-off Fantastic Beasts and Where To Find Them. Two new reports, via Variety and The Wrap, say that recent Oscar winner Eddie Redmayne is Warner Bros.' frontrunner for the  starring role of Newt Scamander. Because the film will be at least a trilogy and maybe more, any actor who commits to the role could have the next 6-8 years mostly locked up.

Variety and The Wrap also say that Nicholas Hoult is in contention. Neither report mentions Smith at all, which leads me to believe he's not on the studio's short list. While my favorite of the three is Smith, Redmayne is undoubtedly a talented and charismatic actor.

My Doctor Who fandom is limited to the "New-Who" run started in 2005. While I have somewhat limited knowledge of the character of K-9, an intelligent robotic talking dog should be cool even to the non-Whovian. You can now take K-9 home with you and control him via your iOS or Android device. I haven't been able to find any details on his dimensions but he does feature a motorized base, moving ears, lit keypad, light up eye, and extending probe. K-9 seems to only be available via Amazon UK.

Disney has cast Sir Ian McKellen as Cogsworth in director Bill Condon's live-action adaptation of Beauty and the Beast! As you know, McKellen is an incredible actor, and I'm kind of surprised that they got him to be in this movie. I wasn't expecting this kind of epic casting, but he's going to be perfect. 

The casting for Beauty and the Beast has surpassed my expectations. McKellen joins the following talented individuals in the feature: Emma Watson as Belle, Dan Stevens as the Beast/Prince, Luke Evans as Gaston, and Josh Gad as Gaston's goofy sidekick Le Fou. 

McKellen has starred in a ton of movies during his career, but he's best known for playing Gandalf in The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit movies as well as the villainous mutant Magneto in the X-Men movies.

The classic 1977 psychedelic Italian horror film Suspiria will be adapted into a TV series. If you haven’t seen this movie yet, you really need to check it out. It one of my favorite horror films. The tone and vibe are awesome, and it has such a nightmarishly dark story. 

The movie was inspired by the Thomas De Quincey book called Suspiria De Profundis, and that will be the name of the series. The director of the original film, Dario Argento, will serve as an artist supervisor on the show.

The news comes from Screen Daily, which says that it will be a English-language period horror drama in which the author of the book is the lead character. The show will be “styled as a new Sherlock Holmes, the story will explore psychological fantasies of evil and attempt to solve fearful mysteries. It will be set in London and Rome at the turn of the 20th century.”

Argento said in a statement,

“The extraordinary freedom of expression and creativity that modern TV drama now offers and the interest that the public has shown towards it have encouraged me to take a stab at this new genre.”

This could be a really cool and insane series! I hope it turns out well!

One of the best things that this new Fantastic Four reboot has going for it is the cast playing the main characters. Miles Teller, Kate Mara, Jamie Bell, and Michael B. Jordan are all incredibly talented young actors, and they play Mr. Fantastic, the Invisible Woman, Thing, and the Human Torch, respectively.

I’m not one of those people who needs convincing on the casting, because I think they’re going to be great. I just hope that the story and script match their talent. 

Four videos have been released for the movie, and each one focuses on one of these actors and the character that they play in the film. Writer/producer Simon Kinberg and director Josh Trank offer up some commentary on why they chose the actors they did to play these parts. 

FANTASTIC FOUR, a contemporary re-imagining of Marvel’s original and longest-running superhero team, centers on four young outsiders who teleport to an alternate and dangerous universe, which alters their physical form in shocking ways. Their lives irrevocably upended, the team must learn to harness their daunting new abilities and work together to save Earth from a former friend turned enemy.

The movie is set to be released on August 7th, 2015.

Marvel Studios and Real3D have revealed a limited edition set of 3D glasses based on most of the characters from Avengers: Age Of Ultron.

Hawkeye, Quicksilver, and Scarlet Witch didn’t get any. They must not be special enough, but there are still several to choose from! They include Captain America, Iron Man, Black Widow, Thor, Vision, Hulk, and even Ultron

A release date and pricing haven’t been confirmed, but considering the movie comes out on May 1st, they should go on sale soon.

This last weekend was the last time WonderCon will be held in Anaheim CA. We had the opportunity to attend the 2015 event, and it was a really fun year, even if nothing spectacular or huge was revealed. All the good stuff is basically saved for San Diego Comic-Con anyway. 

Comic-Con International has announced that next year the WonderCon event will be held in Los Angeles at the L.A. Convention Center. This brings an end to the convention's four-year stay in Anaheim. I’ve actually enjoyed attending the event in Anaheim, and I’m kind of sad to see it relocate, especially since I absolutely hate going to downtown L.A. It makes sense for them to move, though. The reason for the move is that Anaheim doesn’t have enough available space on the dates they want to have the con. WonderCon was founded in 1987, and this is the third time that it has been moved. It previously lived in Oakland and San Francisco.

Mayor Eric Garcetti said in a statement,

“Los Angeles is honored to have been selected as the destination for WonderCon 2016. We look forward to establishing a long-term partnership with Comic-Con International, the presenter, and helping them establish a home-base in L.A. We anticipate the show to be highly attended and to set the precedent for future successful Comic-Con events in L.A.”

Los Angeles has also been trying to get Comic-Con International to bring their flagship event to their convention center for years, and apparently they are still in the running for that. With the rate that Comic-Con attendance is growing in San Diego, they will most likely move to another venue in the near future. 

I would really hate to see Comic-Con leave San Diego, but it looks like it has outgrown the small city. With WonderCon landing in L.A. there might be a good chance that Comic-Con will as well, especially with most of the movie studios and talent in the area. Other cities that have been in the running have included Anaheim and Las Vegas. 

Hulu is in the process of developing an original series based on Stephen King’s time-travel novel 11/22/63. It was previously announced that J.J. Abrams’ Bad Robot is producing the series and that James Franco is set to star in it. The story centers around the Kennedy assassination, and they have hired Kevin Macdonald (The Last King of Scotland, State of Play) to direct and executive produce the first two of the nine-episode event series.

Macdonald is a very talented director, and I think it’s great that they were able to get someone as good as him to be involved with developing the series. 

Franco plays a high school English teacher named Jake Epping who travels back in time to try to prevent the assassination of President John F. Kennedy in Dallas on the fateful date in American history.

Some of the other cast members joining Franco in the series are Chris Cooper as the irascible owner of Al’s diner and a mentor and friend to Epping; Sarah Gadon as the librarian who falls in love with Franco’s character, who is unaware of his double life; Cherry Jones as Lee Harvey Oswald’s mother; Daniel Webber as Lee Harvey Oswald; George MacKay as a bartender who becomes Jake’s ally; Lucy Fry as Lee Harvey Oswald’s Russian wife; and Leon Rippy as a janitor at Epping’s school in 2015.

Hulu has yet to announce a premiere date, but we’ll keep you updated!

When Bard the Bowman goes to reason with Thorin Oakenshield in The Hobbit: The Battle of Five Armies, Oakenshield is kind of an ass. Well, YouTube user M Venturelli took the scene and assholishness to new heights in this funny re-edit of the scene. The creator explains: 

“In the spirit of the ‘Tolkien Edits’, I kept the essence of the scene intact, while making it more to the point.”

Comic-Con International is teaming us with Lionsgate to bring fanboys and fangirls Comic-Con everyday all year long. They are launching a Video On Demand subscription service that will be available later this year.

The service will include original short-form content that will be created exclusively for the channel. There will also be films and TV series from the Lionsgate library and other studios whose products appeal to the Comic-Con fan base. They will also screen exclusive archived footage from the 45 years that the geek event has been around. They also plan on working with the Comic-Con International Independent Film Festival to provide content.

This could be something fun to subscribe to, but I think I’ll wait to see what people think of it to see if it’s really worth it before I actually subscribe to it. Here’s some additional information from the press release:

Last year, 17 of the top 20 North American box office blockbusters had a presence at the Comic-Con Convention along with iconic television series such as “The Walking Dead” and “American Horror Story.” Comic-Con International has grown from 300 attendees in the basement of San Diego’s U.S. Grant Hotel in 1970 to well over 130,000 fans from around the world last year, marking its evolution into a staple of popular culture and the longest-running comics and popular arts convention in America. Badges for this year’s Comic-Con sold out in 60 minutes.

The new Comic-Con International channel is the third streaming service to be launched or announced by Lionsgate as the Company continues to build its suite of online platforms to deliver content directly to consumers. Lionsgate also recently launched the Lionsgate Entertainment World platform with the Alibaba Group in China and has announced the planned launch this summer of Tribeca Shortlist, a subscription video-on-demand service for film aficionados in partnership with Tribeca Enterprises.

Nicholas Hoult’s character Nux is featured on one the latest poster for George Miller’s Mad Max: Fury Road. The character seems to find lots of joy in carnage and chaos. We have couple other new posters for the film that make sure we all know that this movie is going to be complete madness. 

An apocalyptic story set in the furthest reaches of our planet, in a stark desert landscape where humanity is broken, and almost everyone is crazed fighting for the necessities of life. Within this world exist two rebels on the run who just might be able to restore order. There's Max, a man of action and a man of few words, who seeks peace of mind following the loss of his wife and child in the aftermath of the chaos. And Furiosa, a woman of action and a woman who believes her path to survival may be achieved if she can make it across the desert back to her childhood homeland.

Mad Max: Fury Road will be unleashed on May 15th.

This cool piece of Hellboy fan art is called "Tentacle Time!" and it was created by artist Brian Lawver. As you can see he's about to take on some kind of tentacled creature, which is a pretty normal thing for the badass hero. Here's a note from the artist:

Hugh Jackman has signed on to play the lead role in the faith based film project Apostle Paul. The movie is being developed at Warner Bros. and Jackman will take on the title role, who is also known as Saul of Tarsus. 

Jackman is also producing the movie alongside Matt Damon and Ben Affleck under their Pearl Street banner. The screenplay is currently being written by Matt Cook (Triple Nine, By Way Of Helena). 

Just in case you haven’t been to Sunday School in a while, Paul was not one of the 12 original apostles of Jesus. He was converted on the Road to Damascus when Christ came to him and in that moment he was blinded by a great, white light. He remained blind until a man named Ananias prayed and restored his eyesight. Paul ended up becoming one of the most important followers of Jesus as he traveled to Rome and preached Christ’s word the the Romans. He was able to do this because he was a Roman citizen. He is also known for writing 14 of 27 books in the New Testament.

Several other successful faith-based movies have been released recently, including Son Of God, God’s Not Dead, and Heaven Is For Real. With the huge fan base that Jackman has, and the popularity of Christian movies right now, this next project is sure to be a success. 

Jackman is gearing up to star in a third Wolverine film, which hits theaters on March 3rd, 2017. He’s also set to star as P.T, Barnum in The Greatest Showman On Earth.

As Lionsgate is working on an adaptation of Homer’s The Odyssey, and they’ve brought on the team who developed The Hunger Games films to bring one of history’s greatest adventure stories to life. The ancient Greek poem is about a long voyage home after the conclusion of the Trojan War.

Francis Lawrence is set to direct, Peter Craig will write the script, and Nina Jacobson is going to produce. All of them were part of the team that worked on The Hunger Games.

According to Deadline, the studio has put the project onto the fast track of production. They plan to start shooting early next year, right after the filmmakers finish their Mockingjay - Part 2 promotional tour.

The story has been adapted several times by Hollywood in films and TV. Past projects are connected to the story either directly or indirectly. One of my favorite indirect adaptations was Joel and Ethan Coen’s O Brother, Where Are Thou? 

The story is packed full of everything a good movie needs. It follows the adventures of the warrior Odysseus and the trials and tribulations he encounters on his decade-long journey home to Greece after the fall of Troy. Along the way he is met with several obstacles such as a Cyclops, a Scylla, a sea monster, and of course, the birdlike sirens.

There’s no information on what the angle for the movie is, but I’m sure it will be targeted to a PG-13 audience.

Check out this amusing video from Tripp and Tyler that offers us a humorous look at what absurd e-mail mistakes might be like in real life. Some of these include forgetting to switch off your out-of-office reply, forgetting to attach a file, reply-alls, and more. These all look moronically funny in person. 

Sunshine Superman is an inspiring documentary that tells the story of Carl Boenish, who is known as the father of base jumping. This is a larger than life man who dared to take on the impossible and started jumping off buildings and cliffs for sport. Boenish comes off as a goofy guy who is completely fearless. Unfortunately, that fearlessness ended up getting him killed. It seems like he sure lived his life to its fullest, though, and without limits. This definitely looks like a doc that I would enjoy watching.

A heart-racing documentary portrait of Carl Boenish, the father of the BASE-jumping movement, whose early passion for skydiving led him to ever more spectacular - and dangerous - feats of foot-launched human flight. Experience his jaw-dropping journey in life and love, to the pinnacle of his achievements when he and wife Jean broke the BASE-jumping Guinness World Record in 1984 on the Norwegian 'Troll Wall' mountain range. Incredibly, within days, triumph was followed by disaster. 

Sunshine Superman hits theaters starting on May 22nd. 

Warner Bros. has been looking to get a Logan’s Run remake into production for years, but it’s always kind of fizzled out. The most recent attempt to make the movie was being developed with actor Ryan Gosling re-teaming with his Drive director Nicolas Winding Refn. That’s no longer happening, though. 

The current script for the film is being written by BioShock creator Ken Levine, and according to Tracking Board, the remake has been retooled to make the lead character a female. This news is unconfirmed, but it sounds like something Hollywood would do.

Logan’s Run is based on the 1967 novel by William F. Nolan and George Clayton Johnson, and the original 1976 movie starred Michael York, Jenny Agutter, and Farrah Fawcett. The story centers on a future society that requires the death of everyone upon reaching a certain age. Anyone who does't embrace their destiny to die is labeled a “runner” and is hunted by operatives known as Sandmen. Logan is one of these Sandmen who is forced to go on the run.

It is reported that the new film is expected to stay closer to the source material than the original movie did and could feature low-tech science fiction in a futuristic setting. I liked the original 1976 film, and if this remake actually does happen, I hope they go with the retro vibe.
