SUICIDE SQUAD Adds Raymond Olubowale and Scott Eastwood

David Ayer's Suicide Squad continues to be one of the most highly-anticipated movies of the upcoming DC Cinematic Universe, and the film's cast continues to grow. According to Latino-Review and eTalk, boxer Raymond Olubowale and actor Scott Eastwood have come on board.

First up, let's talk about Olubowale. LR's El Mayimbe says he may be playing King Shark in the film:

#suicidesquad #skwad #RUMOR Raymond Olubowale is reportedly playing #KINGSHARK Unconfirmed though since news broke over the weekend. Stay tuned.

While it's still unconfirmed, Olubowale certainly has the physicality to play a huge, hulking supervillain. In the comics, the character has shark-like teeth, gills that allow him to breathe underwater and on land, regenerative powers, and the ability to lift up to 55 tons, which would definitely give him a unique look that's different from any other major supervillain we've seen before. Olubowale has acted in movies before, playing the Axe Man in Resident Evil: Afterlife and Resident Evil: Retribution.

Meanwhile, the addition of Eastwood (son of Clint) remains mysterious. We're not certain who he'll be playing in the film, but I imagine there are a number of roles — both villainous and otherwise — that he could take on, and fans have speculated that he'll play everyone from Batman villain Hush to Wonder Woman's main squeeze Steve Trevor. We'll be sure to keep you guys updated with any new information we get about this, but in the meantime, what do you think about the new additions to the Suicide Squad cast?

Fight Scene Supercut Packs A Major Punch

There's something mesmerizing about watching an awesome fight scene unfold on film. The choreography often means that things happen that would never happen in real life, and sequences like that are regularly showcases for incredible feats of strength and agility that we all have probably wished we had.

Sploid points us to this supercut from Robert Jones that mashes together fight scenes from 98 different movies — both memorable and not so memorable — set to Mötley Crüe's metal anthem "Kickstart My Heart." It's a pulsing, bone-crunching trip through cinematic history, and I'm glad to see some of my favorite movies make appearances in this video. Crack your knuckles, get your best one-liner ready, and check it out below.

HALO 5: GUARDIANS — 2 Live-Action Trailers "Hunt The Truth"

Microsoft is trying something different with its marketing campaign for Halo 5: Guardians. They are pushing #HUNTtheTRUTH and have released two live-action trailers/ads that show two very different stories. When you pull up the hashtag you can vote for which side you believe (here). I've never seen this functionality on Twitter before and I wonder if this will roll out to all users.

It's subtle but both trailers have unique color temperatures and each show the Master Chief and Spartan Locke in both dominant and wounded positions. Spatially, they also approach the bullet ridden statue of Master Chief from opposing directions. If you notice any other differences, sound off in the comments.

Also newly announced today (via the trailer), is the release date for Halo 5: Guardians, which is this October 27th (USA) launching exclusively on Xbox One.

For developer Roystan Ross, what started out as just a controller demo turned into a full HD visual upgrade of the first level of Super Mario 64. If that isn't impressive enough, you can also play it on Windows, Mac, Linux, or in your browser. The whole project uses Unity, which is the most widely used and platform agnostic game engine out there. To download Ross's controller demo checkout the project page.

Sony and Microsoft have made several HD remixes/upgrades of their best selling games. Personally, I'm not that interested in revisiting Nintendo's older games in an "upgraded" fashion. I'd rather keep classics as they are. I'd much rather have a next-gen/Wii U version of Zelda or Super Mario.

Ryan Reynolds Still Fighting For DEADPOOL To Be Rated R

$

For the longest time, one of the main reasons we didn't think 20th Century Fox would ever make a Deadpool film was because the kind of movie the fans wanted to see and filmmakers wanted to make was a hard R-rated movie that stayed close to the violent, unconventional nature of the source material. But when the film was finally announced, word quietly came out that it was going to be PG-13 in order to meet the studio's wishes, and although there are claims that the project won't lose its soul because of the rating, it's obviously a bit of a disappointment that they won't be able to go all-out and make the exact kind of movie that they wanted to from the start.

Or will they? Star Ryan Reynolds jumped on Twitter earlier today to show off a picture of his Deadpool-ready bod, and he also answered a fan question about the rating with some surprising new information:

That's good news for fans who are holding out hope that this might still turn into the hard R film they've always wanted. If the star of the movie is still trying to get that vision to the big screen, then there's still a tiny chance it could happen. (Granted, it's not likely, but there's a chance.)

Deadpool creator Rob Liefeld has already gone on record saying that he thinks the movie can still be great with a PG-13 rating, and while I'm excited to see what this long-gestating project finally looks like, I'd be much happier knowing that Reynolds, director Tim Miller, and the rest of the filmmakers were actually able to give us the version of the movie that they've been wanting to make for years instead of a more compromised version. If all else fails, I'm sure there will be a hard R version on the eventual Blu-ray or DVD, but that's just not the same as seeing it in all its glory in a theater for the first time. In the meantime, check out the newly-released official logo for the film below:

Guys Play Movie and TV Theme Songs Using Beer Bottles

To make a splash with a web video these days, it helps to have a unique concept that no one has seen before — and that seems to be the case with The Bottle Guys, a group of dudes who play iconic movie and TV theme songs by blowing on the open lids of beer bottles. I feel like that's probably been done before, but has any other beer-bottle-blowing group teamed with a professional orchestra to record before? I highly doubt it, but that's what happened when The Bottle Guys hooked up with the Budapest Art Orchestra to play a medley of songs from things like Game of Thrones, Harry Potter, Jurassic Park, Pirates of the Caribbean, Star Wars, and many more.

This video is a medley of our favourite movie themes! For this one we collaborated with Budapest Art Orchestra in Hungary where we recorded the orchestral parts and shot some of the video. If you watch closely you see one of us, Johannes, is actually conducting the orchestra. :) Then we recorded the bottles (and more video) in our own studio in Copenhagen when we got back.

Bryan Singer Confirms Angel Will Appear in X-MEN: APOCALYPSE

While the news of Hugh Jackman's eventual departure from the X-Men universe has been the big mutant-related topic of the day, X-Men: Apocalypse director Bryan Singer has posted some new concept art to his Instagram for his upcoming film and it confirms that the mutant Angel will appear in the movie. The art shows Angel trapped in some sort of prison display while a crowd watches him from the shadows.

Some production art. #XMEN #XmenApocalypse

It's a creepy image, but the Angel confirmation makes sense given that this movie's villain will be the titular Apocalypse. In the comics, Apocalypse gives Angel metallic organic wings that allow him to shoot feathers like missiles from his back if he becomes one of Apocalypse's Four Horsemen, and since Angel is in the middle of some tough times, he accepts the offer. This leads to a series of traumatic events in the character's life, and ultimately his name change from Angel to Archangel.

Ben Foster played Angel in Brett Ratner's X-Men: The Last Stand, and we seriously doubt he'll be returning since they're recasting most of the main characters in this movie and aiming for younger people like Game of Thrones' Sophie Turner as Jean Grey. Earlier rumors pegged British actor Ben Hardy as playing Angel in this film, though that still remains unconfirmed at this time.

What do you think? Excited about X-Men: Apocalypse? What plot points from the comics are you hoping to see translated into this film?

All The Fatalities of MORTAL KOMBAT X in One Video

Ever since I saw the first footage for Mortal Kombat X, I've been saying that the violence and gore has made me a little uneasy because of how realistic and visceral it is in comparison with the sort of goofy versions of the game that used to be in arcades back in the '90s. Some people may disagree, but after seeing this video from IGN that puts all of the game's fatalities back to back, I think it's pretty clear that this isn't just your average run-of-the-mill fighting game anymore. If you watch this and don't feel a gut-wrenching reaction to it, I feel sorry for your soul. This is the most brutal thing I've seen in a video game.

Mortal Kombat X arrives in stores on April 14th.

Joss Whedon, Elizabeth Olsen, Aaron Taylor-Johnson Talk AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON

As the May 1st (USA) release date for Avengers: Age of Ultron draws closer, several set visit interviews have been released. Because some of these interviews are done months in advance they overlap with things already released and talked about months ago. In the sprit of brevity, I'm condensing three Buzzfeed interviews to just the things that are are new/interesting.

Director Joss Whedon on Quicksilver:

"Pietro has always been kind of a dick. Aaron [Johnson] is so beautiful — like sculpture beautiful — that you buy him as somebody who’s going to be a little arrogant. He’s not as a person. He’s a dear. He works his ass off. But I knew that he could play that guy.”

Aaron-Taylor Johnson (Quicksilver) on the first days of shooting:

“Stepping onto the set is quite daunting, scary, overwhelming, surreal. I remember the first week I was like, I’m doing an eastern European accent, I’ve got a white wig, and it’s sort of not yet fitting right. I’m going to be a rookie on set. And they’re going to put us through initiation tests to fuck with us.”

Thankfully that was not the case at all. Johnson talks about what really happened:

“Downey actually did a little dinner for us all. It was both Chrises, Mark, Jeremy, me, Lizzie, a couple nights before we had a big scene. … Everyone looks out for one another. It’s a real family. It’s really nice. You know, someone like that knows the power they have. The fact that they do that — it’s brilliant.”

Elizabeth Olsen (Scarlet Witch) on Whedon:

“I think he’s having a lot of fun working with Aaron and me, because he didn’t inherit characters. He was able to create characters with us. We get to have, like, the origin story. Anything from the accent to the movements to our personalities has not been a conversation we had with anyone else on another film. It’s just within this world.”

I can't wait to see how Quicksilver's powers in Age of Ultron will differ from how his super speed was portrayed in X-Men: Days of Future Past and the type of effects used on The Flash TV show.

FPS Gamers get a Reality Check

One of my favorite YouTube shows is Matthew Patrick’s Game Theory, dubbed the "Smartest Show in Gaming." Matthew, aka MatPat, dissects games, characters, and gaming culture using math, psychology, and years of research experience. In his latest video, he joins the Ubisoft marketing juggernaut and releases a really well made video.

The video showcases the reality of a SWAT team versus what goes down in Rainbow Six: Siege. He joins up with a handful of his friends and fellow YouTube gamers and a squad of actual L.A. SWAT officers in a training exercise. They use paintball training rounds in actual firearms, which would definitely hurt… a lot. The video is great at showing the high pressure that goes into hostage situations. You can hear genuine fear in their voices as they really don’t want to get shot by these training rounds.

You might kick ass at FPS games, but do you think you could handle the real deal?! Let’s get talkin’ in those comments!

Live-Action MULAN Movie On The Way From Disney

$

Saturday Night Live just made fun of Disney's recent habit of adapting their animated classics into live-action features with a sketch featuring Dwayne Johnson as a badass version of Bambi, and today brings news that the studio is already working on another live-action adaptation, this time of Mulan. THR has the story, which says that Disney has purchased a script from Elizabeth Martin and Lauren Hynek "that centers on the Chinese legend of Hua Mulan, the female warrior who was the main character in Disney's 1998 animated film." Since this is still early in the process, there isn't any word yet about a director or actors who may be interested.

Mulan, of course, tells the story of a young girl who dresses like a man to take her aged father's place in the army to fight against the Hun onslaught. I wonder how they'll handle the dragon Mushu in the live-action version.

This is pretty much a no-brainer in the wake of the success of Cinderella, Maleficent, and Alice in Wonderland, but I'm still shocked that a live-action Aladdin hasn't been announced yet, because to me that seems like the most obvious slam-dunk when it comes to bringing these animated movies to life. While it'd be tough to find someone to follow in Robin Williams' footsteps as the Genie, Dan Castellaneta (the voice of Homer on The Simpsons) ably stepped up as a replacement in Return of Jafar, the Kingdom Hearts games, and the animated series, so if they keep the genie completely CGI in the inevitable remake, they could cast him since he already has experience. I'm guessing Disney isn't going to sit on that property forever. In the meantime, they have Beauty and the Beast and Dumbo already in the works, so we can probably expect more of these announcements very soon. Place your bets in the comments about what property you think they'll adapt next.

In the meantime, I'll have this stuck in my head for the rest of the day:

I have always had a secret desire to Cosplay and learn how to knit, they both look like a lot of fun, seriously. I have never in my wildest dreams ever thought of combining the two. This cosplay by FangirlPhysics combines the skill of knitting and the fun of cosplay into something I can only describe as cozy. Interestingly enough, she's dressed as Captain America — likely the only Avenger who knows how to knit. H/T: Fashionably Geek

AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON — Description of How Quicksilver's Super Speed Was Shot

$
0
0

When we see Iron Man or Thor fly we aren't thinking about Superman, and that's mostly because of how they fly. Superman defies gravity and goes from a hover to mach one in milliseconds. Thor swings Mjölnir around and then throws it into the sky. Iron Man uses repulsers in his hands and feet for stability and additional repulsers fold out of his back to go supersonic.

We've already seen Quicksilver's display of speed in X-Men: Days of Future Past, he's faster than bullets and seems to have limitless speed. On the CW's The Flash TV series, Barry Allen is mostly a blur only seen entering and exiting super-speed, and when he goes really fast he can travel through time.

We won't really know what Quicksilver's own distinct style of super-speed in Avengers: Age of Ultron will be like until we see the movie, but, thanks to Buzzfeed, we know a little bit about how they have shot a few action set pieces.

Minor Spoilers Ahead

Joss Whedon filmed Elizabeth Olsen dispatching Ultrons from several angles, including one using an ultra-high-speed camera. That shot would later be combined with one of Aaron Taylor-Johnson running through the same frame at regular speed, to re-create how the world looks to Quicksilver when he’s operating at his top velocity. The filming strategy proved especially taxing for Olsen, who had to maintain Wanda’s stable bearing even amid utter bedlam — every quiver in her face was amplified enormously in slow motion. “There’s live cars on fire and gunshots and all those things,” Olsen said. “I have such a bad nervous system that … I have to know exactly when there’s gonna be a loud noise or a spark or else I’ll jump or twitch or something.”
For his part, Taylor-Johnson also struggled at first to nail the deceptively simple act of how Quicksilver would look while running on camera. The obvious option — shooting Taylor-Johnson running on a treadmill in front of a green screen — proved to be a non-starter. “There was no real life to it,” said Taylor-Johnson. “It looked really dull.” Instead, the production started shooting Taylor-Johnson outdoors, as he sprinted over natural terrain. “The more dynamic or the messier my arms were or the wider my legs were, [and] the more I changed up the wave and the rhythm of the running, the better,” he said. “It feels more emotional and expressive. It’s a lot more fun that way.”

So at least one sequence will be slow-motion with a mix of emotionally and expressive running. We recently posted a featurette that shows a bit more of Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch displaying their powers. I feel really sorry for The Flash movie in 2018 which will be the fourth speedster seen on screens both big and small.

Infographic: Iconic Movie and TV Show Hairstyles

Infographics come from the strangest places these days. We've featured some that originated at loan companies, tool companies, license plate websites, apartment rental businesses, and more, and now we have one from a hair transplant website (via Sploid). Most of these characters actually deserve to be on this poster because they do have truly iconic, easily identifiable hair, but there are a couple that I don't quite think live up to the rest. I love Benedict Cumberbatch's take on Sherlock Holmes, for example, but does he really have unique enough hair to make this list? Same with Butters from South Park — he's one of my favorite characters, but I'm not sure his hair should be up there next to Ace Ventura or Princess Leia. What do you think? Sound off below.

David Duchovny on New X-FILES Series and Fox Mulder Being a Terrible Agent

While I was on vacation, the exciting news broke that The X-Files was coming back for a limited six episode run! I’ve been wanting something like this to happen for years, and the fact that it’s actually being done is incredible! The X-Files is one of the greatest shows ever made, and I can’t wait to see the story of Fox Mulder and Dana Scully continue.

David Duchovny is set to reprise his role as Mulder, and in a recent interview with The New York Times, he talked about the show and explained that Mulder makes a terrible FBI agent. Here’s what he said about the show coming back:

“All the good things are good. The good things are working with Chris and Gillian again, and getting to do this show again and see what we’ve got. I’m as curious as anybody else. I’m amazed that there’s still an appetite for it and I’m touched. I think the frame of the show is so expansive and so unique and so influential, that it should feel present.”

As you know, there has been talk of another X-Files movie for years. It’s something they have all said they would love to do. Little did we know that all that talk would turn into a new series.

“The time is right because we got our [act] together to do it. In terms of culturally or what people want to see, I don’t know. I imagine if we waited too much longer people would eventually lose interest. It’s different from something like Star Trek, which started out campy and then, especially with the J.J. Abrams stuff, became legit somehow. You might argue with me, but I always felt like we were legit. We’re still trying to do the same show. It’s not like were trying to make it 2.0, or whatever the .0 is now. 3.0. We’re gonna make the same show. But it’ll be interesting because Gillian and I are older. I don’t want to act like it’s 20 years ago.

He was asked about what the six episodes will be like, and if they are going to be serialized, or just be like a “collection of movies of the week.”

“We’re gonna do both. I’m pretty sure it’s gonna begin and end with the mythology. But I really don’t know.”

I just assumed that it would be a serialized show, especially with only six episodes, but I also like that there might be a couple standalone episodes in there as well. He also discussed how he didn’t realize that what he was doing was groundbreaking when he first started X-Files.

“I was just trying to pay the rent. I’m really bad with that stuff – I’ve never been interested in paranormal stuff. I liked horror movies when I was a kid, but only when I was a kid. When “The X-Files” came around, it was a well-written pilot and kind of a cool character, this irreverent F.B.I. agent. But who’s gonna wanna watch a show about aliens? Honestly, I was the wrong guy to ask that question. I had no idea.”

There has never been another series quite like The X-Files, and I don’t think there ever will be. Hopefully when the series comes back so will that wonderful magic and chemistry between these two fantastic characters. When talking about his character, he explained how he was the worst FBI agent in the field:

“The interesting thing about Mulder is nominally he is law enforcement but he never solved one case in nine years. So he’s the worst F.B.I. agent of all time. As F.B.I. agents, I would say we were not by the book. Especially Mulder.”

That’s just another one of those things that makes Fox such a awesome and interesting character! The new series is expected to debut sometime in 2016.

At Salt Lake City's first Comic Con back in 2013, I met a man who is now one of my favorite artists, Adam Miconi. His booth caught my eye as his very unique, dark, in-your-face portraits stood out in the crowd of lighthearted fan art. (Zany Deadpool stuff was at an all-time high that year.) I went home with a couple of his posters and even have them hanging in the background of the majority of my PickedLastJake videos.

Fast forward to earlier this year when I bumped into him again at the Salt Lake Comic Con FanXperince. While the convention itself was nothing more than half-hearted, it was nice to see one of my favorite artists get a place on the floor again. I grabbed a cup of coffee, sat down at his booth, and had a nice little chat with the guy.

Unlike his art, Adam is a very nice and welcoming dude. When he isn't making totally rad paintings and digital art, he is designing art for indie game developers, busting out the oil paints and showing his kids the ropes, or putting together online tutorials and free resources for his website. He is a firm believer in helping the art community as a whole and pushing those who dream of doing art for a living to pursue that dream. So check out his website, buy a cool print or two, and learn a few tricks of the trade.

STAR WARS: ROGUE ONE Rumor Updates

As director Gareth Edwards prepares to star shooting Star Wars: Rogue One for Lucasfilm and Disney, fans like me are curious to learn more about the project and what exactly it will entail. We’ve previously heard rumors that the movie could be a heist film involving the Empire’s Death Star plans.

Felicity Jones has been cast as one of the main characters, and it’s rumored that Aaron Paul might be involved as well. Thanks to Making Star Wars, we have some updated information on the rumors we’ve heard, and they add a few new ones to the mix. Here’s what they say:

  • Rogue One “still has a few months before it goes in front of cameras,” according to several sources.
  • Felicity Jones is the main character (no duh).
  • Aaron Paul isn’t out… yet. One sources says he is in, others aren’t so sure.
  • The other role is the companion character of Jones.
  • Paul is up for the “companion” character.
  • It heavily involves an agricultural planet.
  • Ben Mendelsohn is most likely playing “The Scientist.”
  • The Death Star plans are still involved.
  • The scientist knows the Death Star is wrong.
  • Geonosians are responsible for the prototype and construction; nothing has been retconned.

Once the movie starts shooting I’m sure that more information on the project will leak, just like it did with Star Wars: The Force Awakens, unless the studios take more drastic measures of protecting their secrets this time around.

I love the prospect of the film, and I can’t wait to learn more about what is actually being planned. We’ll keep you updated.

Youtube user The Unusual Suspect made a fun trailer mashup that takes footage from The Walking Dead and edits it together into a Zombieland-style trailer. A lot of the footage used is from the early seasons of the show, so its kind of interesting being reminded how different everyone looked when the show first started. They've changed so much! I guess being forced to survive in a zombie apocalypse will do that to people.

Behold the mayhem of three new TV spots for Mad Max: Fury Road! The spots are called “Retaliate,” “Chaos,” and “War,” and I also included a new poster. I just can’t seem to see enough footage from this flick, which is good because I've heard that we might get a new full trailer tonight! If that's true, I hope it's loaded with lots of crazy new footage. Mad Max: Fury Road might just end up being the most over-the-top action-packed film of 2015, and I could not be happier that director George Miller was finally able to bring this chapter in the story to the screen.

The post-apocalyptic action film is set in the furthest reaches of our planet, in a stark desert landscape where humanity is broken, and most everyone is crazed fighting for the necessities of life. Within this world of fire and blood exist two rebels on the run who just might be able to restore order. There’s Max (Tom Hardy), a man of action and a man of few words, who seeks peace of mind following the loss of his wife and child in the aftermath of the chaos and Furiosa (Charlize Theron), a woman of action and a woman who believes her path to survival may be achieved if she can make it across the desert back to her childhood homeland.

The movie also stars Nicholas Hoult, Hugh Keays-Byrne, Nathan Jones, Zoe Kravitz, Riley Keough, and Rosie Huntington-Whiteley. It will explode in theaters on May 15th.
