Suit Up For This 3-Minute Gangster Movie Supercut

$
0
0

Gangster films have been around since the very early days of filmmaking, and it's a genre that supports straight-ahead crime stories as well as unconventional movies like Pulp Fiction that flip the genre's stereotypes and poke fun at them. Some of the best actors in Hollywood history have been a part of gangster movies: Marlon Brando, Al Pacino, Robert De Niro, and Jack Nicholson, just to name a few.

You'll see all of those guys — and plenty more — in Jorge Luengo Ruiz's latest supercut (see his previous effort here), which takes us through the history of gangster films with a look at some of the genre's most iconic characters. I like how the video hints at the dual layers that many of these tough guys have in common: though they're sharply dressed and appear do be on the up-and-up from the outside, they often have a quick trigger finger and an even quicker temper, not to mention a twisted sense of humor. From Goodfellas and The Departed to Scarface and The Godfather, if you like gangster flicks, this one's got your name written all over it.

New Images From Marvel's DAREDEVIL Tease Alliances

Daredevil, Marvel's first Netflix original series, is gearing up for release on April 10th, and Netflix is in the middle of their full-on marketing blitz to support the new show. They unleashed a new trailer and some more motion posters, and they're basically doing everything they can to make sure that the show is on people's radar as they barrel toward that release date. Now, they've revealed two brand new photos from the show that tease alliances between characters on the right side of the law, and alliances with those on the wrong side of it.

In the first (above), we see Vincent D’Onofrio’s Kingpin meeting with Wai Ching Ho’s Madame Gao, so the company obviously isn't concerned about keeping the appearances of The Kingpin under wraps anymore now that they've fully revealed him to the fans. And then below, there's a photo of Charlie Cox's Matt Murdock meeting with Deborah Ann Woll's Karen Page, Elden Henson's Foggy Nelson, and Vondie Curtis Hall's Ben Urich at an official-looking meeting.

The entire first season of Daredevil will be available to stream on April 10th, 2015, just over two weeks from now.

Apps Are Bigger Than Hollywood

$

I came across some mind-blowing charts and data at Asymco that shows that revenue on mobile apps is bigger than all of the combined domestic (US) box office of Hollywood studios. So how the hell did that happen? Apps have exploded while domestic box office numbers have remained stagnant.

$ = Millions

$ = Millions

If you haven't noticed, a huge focus is now on international releases, which for some huge summer tentpole movies can be as much as 70% of their worldwide total. All those recent box office records we've seen are largely because of the international markets.

Last year Apple paid out $10 billion to developers and Google paid out $3 billion. Apps on iOS employ 627,000 jobs in the US versus 374,000 in Hollywood.

One thing to think about is that these data points don't give a full picture of the wider movie industry and don't account for movie theaters, video sales, or merchandise, which for a franchise like Star Wars, you're almost paying for a two hour commercial. Then again, these are only numbers for Apple and don't even get into money made off of apps that don't go through Apple like advertising, subscriptions, and merchandise.

What we do know for sure is that Apps are taking our time and money away from other forms of entertainment or productivity. For the full data go to Asymco.

Bruce Campbell Will Play President Reagan In FARGO Season 2

I am going to start this off with a confession. I am a TV junkie. I can freely admit that I spend more time in front of the TV than I should. I look at it as I am single handedly keeping the best shows on the air.

Putting my distorted view of my self-worth aside for the moment, it looks like season 2 of Fargo just got a lot more interesting. As if it weren’t intriguing enough already; being that it is going to be a prequel season, they went and cast Ash himself, Bruce Freaking Campbell, as President Ronald Reagan.

TVLine broke the news that Campbell will be appearing in one episode of Fargo. They reported:

"Taking place in the late 1970s, Season 2 — a prequel to Season 1 that stars Patrick Wilson as a younger version of Keith Carradine’s Lou Solverson — is set against “the cultural transformation that was going on at that time,” as well as Reagan’s first campaign for President of the United States, previewed FX Networks CEO John Landgraf back in January. “He’s on his first campaign [and he] makes a swing through Fargo. Some of the characters have some interactions with him. And some of his movies are also a part of the show.”

Campbell is just an added bonus to what is already an amazing cast. Starring alongside Wilson will be Nick Offerman, Kirsten Dunst, Brad Garrett, Ted Danson, Jesse Plemons, Kieran Culkin, and Campbell’s former Burn Notice co-star, Jeffrey Donovan

I am excited to see what they are going to do on the second season of this fantastic show.

The All-New Avengers Lineup Revealed

Well, I guess we can skip the inevitable "exclusively on The View" nonsense this time, as the fully revealed image of the All-New Avengers cover showed up on 4Chan. With this new lineup revealed, I really dig the direction of the team. Granted, these things are always in some sort of flux, so this could possibly change, but here is the new lineup according to the cover: Thor, Captain America, Iron Man, Vision, Ms. Marvel, Nova, and Ultimate Spider-Man.

Not a bad group, and with all the recent changes to the individual characters, this really is an all-new lineup. It's nice to see such a diverse team when it comes to gender, age, or ethnicity. It's a good mix of old and new, especially if Iron Man ends up being Pepper Potts and not Tony Stark. Having Miles be the Spider-Man of this lineup is great for the character, and having younger characters beside him like Ms. Marvel and Nova should bring some much-needed youth to the team. The creative duo of Mark Waid and Mahmud Asrar have a lot of great ingredients to work with, and I'm excited to see what they have in store for the new team.

Gareth Edwards and Josh Trank Are Coming to STAR WARS Celebration 2015

Star Wars fans who are attending this year's Star Wars Celebration in Anaheim were already excited about the idea of seeing Star Wars: The Force Awakens writer/director J.J. Abrams and Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy, but now there are two more major players in the Star Wars universe confirmed to appear: Gareth Edwards and Josh Trank, the directors of the upcoming standalone films. (Edwards will direct Star Wars: Rogue One, while Trank will direct a still-untitled film to be released in a few years.)

StarWars.com has the news:

Kathleen Kennedy, Kiri Hart and Pablo Hidalgo will be joined by directors Gareth Edwards and Josh Trank, who will share their experiences as the newest members of the Lucasfilm creative family. Learn how the teams came together and are collaborating to conceive and create the upcoming stand-alone films in the galaxy far, far away.

A lot has been rumored about these standalone movies, but since there's so little information that's been 100% confirmed, this would be a great time to present fans with some real concrete info about what we can expect. GeekTyrant will have a presence at Star Wars Celebration (which runs from April 16th-19th), so we'll be sure to bring you updates from the convention as soon as possible.

Incredibly Detailed STAR WARS Toy Tribute Took 2,000 Hours to Paint

Artist Robert Burden spent a staggering 2,000 hours over the past 18 months painting this breathtaking tribute to the toys of Star Wars. Everyone knows that keeping the merchandising rights was the most shrewd business move George Lucas ever made, but removing cynicism from the equation, the sci-fi franchise produced tons and tons of toys that were a huge part of the childhoods of an entire generation.

Burden's oil painting stands at an astonishing 15 feet by 8 feet, and it includes over 150 toys from the Kenner toy line as well as a handful of Star Wars influences (like Flash Gordon) and cool easter eggs (like Indiana Jones). Those of you going to Star Wars Celebration this year in Anaheim will be able to see the full original painting on display, and if you have an extra $200,000, you can take it home with you. Otherwise, you can get a smaller print from his website for $250.

KEY & PEELE Sketch "Substitute Teacher" is Becoming a Movie

Keegan-Michael Key and Jordan Peele are the hilarious duo behind Comedy Central's Key and Peele, and lately they've been working to get their sketch titled "Substitute Teacher" made into a movie. On YouTube alone the video has over 72 million plays, essentially securing an audience for a movie adaptation. Just short of a full green light, Paramount Pictures has pre-emptively bought a Substitute Teacher movie pitch. While we've seen both actors in various movies and TV roles, it's going to be cool to see them make a full-length movie based on one of their own creations.

Deadline gives a little peak at what the film will be like:

Keegan-Michael Key will reprise his role as as the over-the-top substitute Mr. Garvey, and Jordan Peele will portray a rival teacher determined to be the students’ favorite.

Rival teachers sounds like a great concept full of lots of comedy opportunities. Key & Peele co-producers Rich Talarico and Alex Rubens will be writing the script.

I've embedded the sketch because even if you've seen it 100 times, it's still funny.

This short 15 second TV spot for Mad Mad: Fury Road features several explosions of various scales. I can't even tell if any of it's new because the movie is one long chase sequence that was storyboarded instead of scripted. This movie is going to be insane.

Mad Mad: Fury Road rides into theaters May 15th (USA).

Video: Jon Hamm on Possibly Joining THE WALKING DEAD as Villain Negan

$

Nearly a year ago, Robert Kirkman was interviewed by MTV about the possibility of Jon Hamm (Mad Men) being cast as fan-hated villain Negan on the The Walking Dead television show. Kirkman responded that:

"He’s not tall enough! That’s a joke. I think Jon Hamm would be perfect. I think after “Mad Men” has run, Jon Hamm is going to have a Tom Hanks level film career, so I don’t think he’ll be coming back to television anytime soon. Although that would be cool!
As far as Negan casting goes, Scott and I are always talking about who we would put in that, it’s definitely on our minds, and there are definitely a lot of candidates. But I wouldn’t expect Negan too terribly soon, although he is definitely in the plan. It’s a 99% lock that he’s going to be in the show eventually, so be on the lookout for that."

We now have a video interview courtesy of MTV of Hamm on the subject of coming on to The Walking Dead as Negan.

Based on Hamm's reaction, I don't think that he has been cast, but he seems pretty open to the possibility. While doing Mad Men, Hamm has popped up in all sorts of movies and TV shows in minor stints. If he did make the jump from one AMC show to another, it could make for some compelling TV.

I know it's a bit of an old subject, but what do you think: should Hamm be Negan on the show?

Matthew McConaughey Starring in THE BILLIONAIRE'S VINEGAR

$

In just a few short years, Matthew McConaughey went from being known for going shirtless in romantic comedies to being one of the most respected and in-demand actors in Hollywood. It seems the Oscar winner is looking to continue his streak of intriguing projects, as Deadline reports he's signed on to topline a film called The Billionaire's Vinegar. It's based on Benjamin Wallace's nonfiction bestseller, and here's the Amazon synopsis for those of you (like me) who haven't heard of it (warning: potential spoilers ahead):

The Billionaire’s Vinegar, now a New York Times bestseller, tells the true story of a 1787 Château Lafite Bordeaux—supposedly owned by Thomas Jefferson—that sold for $156,000 at auction and of the eccentrics whose lives intersected with it. Was it truly entombed in a Paris cellar for two hundred years? Or did it come from a secret Nazi bunker? Or from the moldy basement of a devilishly brilliant con artist? As Benjamin Wallace unravels the mystery, we meet a gallery of intriguing players—from the bicycle-riding British auctioneer who speaks of wines as if they are women to the obsessive wine collector who discovered the bottle. Suspenseful and thrillingly strange, this is the vintage tale of what could be the most elaborate con since the Hitler diaries.

Since this is apparently a well-known story from a popular bestseller, I'm wondering if the script will hold the fact that this is all a con as some sort of big reveal; if so, we basically just spoiled the movie for ourselves by reading the synopsis of the book. Now I'm hoping they address that fact right from the start, and rely on McConaughey's acting to keep everyone engaged as the film moves forward. The script comes from 3:10 to Yuma and Wanted writers Derek Haas and Michael Brandt (where have THOSE guys been lately?), so even if you aren't a wine connoisseur yourself, it sounds like this could be a con man movie that's worth watching.

This Is the Coolest Samus Cosplay I've Ever Seen

Samus cosplay 3.png

Back when the Game Boy was the primary handheld gaming device, I was obsessed with Metroid. I was so excited when I finally beat the game, and I was just as shocked as everyone else to discover that Samus was actually a woman the entire time. (I didn't know it back then, but the game was heavily inspired by Ridley Scott's Alien, hence the female protagonist.)

Cosplayer d-slim has created the coolest Samus costume I've ever seen: it almost looks like it could be cardboard, but it has this incredible sheen and reflective quality to it that gives the entire thing a metallic look. The photos come courtesy of Andrew Mori, and you can check out a ton of d-slim's other work on his Facebook page.

As Nintendo continues to pump out sequels to Mario Party instead of giving fans a new Metroid game, it looks like they'll have to turn to the world of cosplay to imagine bold new adventures for Samus Aran.

SOUTHPAW Trailer: Jake Gyllenhaal Steps Into The Ring

Here's the first trailer for Antoine Fuqua's new boxing film Southpaw. Jake Gyllenhaal looks jacked beyond belief, and this looks like another terrific performance from him. After a scene in this trailer that seems as if it were ripped straight out of Rocky III, it appears that the movie veers into much more dramatic territory; the thrust of the story is about the relationship between Gyllenhaal's character and his daughter as he tries to win her back after a tragedy befalls their family. Rachel McAdams looks like she isn't given too much to do this time around, but that might just be how this trailer is cut. We'll find out when the film is released this July.

From director Antoine Fuqua (TRAINING DAY) and writers Kurt Sutter (SONS OF ANARCHY) and Richard Wenk (THE MECHANIC) comes SOUTHPAW - the story of Billy "The Great" Hope, Junior Middleweight Boxing Champion of the World. When tragedy strikes and he loses it all, Billy enters the battle of his life as he struggles to become a contender once again and win back those he loves. SOUTHPAW stars Academy Award® nominee Jake Gyllenhaal, Academy Award® winner Forest Whitaker, Rachel McAdams, Curtis "50 Cent" Jackson, Rita Ora, Naomie Harris and Victor Ortiz.  In theaters July 2015.

One of ALIEN's Most Terrifying Scenes Reimagined in Sitcom Form

$

Ridley Scott's Alien is one of the best and most influential science fiction films of all time, expanding on George Lucas' thought in Star Wars that not everything has to be all shiny and new in space: it's OK (and some might even say better) for environments to feel dinged up and lived in, instead of having the vibe that some set designer just took everything out of its box for the first time. Alien is essentially a movie about blue collar space truckers, and the way Scott had the alien as an unseen threat, always lurking in the shadows, made the reveals of the xenomorph all the more terrifying.

One of the film's most iconic scenes is the famous "chestburster" sequence. If you know the film, you know it well — and if you've seen Spaceballs, you'll probably remember the hilarious send-up of that sequence that takes place in a diner. Now YouTuber tvmastermandude has added some sitcom sound effects to the original Alien scene, as well as one quick subtitle that serves as a diss of one of TV's most popular current sitcoms. Check it out below, and then watch this in-depth video about the scene and see a mechanism test used for the production:

ANT-MAN: John Slattery Talks About Reprising Howard Stark

John Slattery as Howard Stark in Iron Man 2

John Slattery as Howard Stark in Iron Man 2

We've only seen John Slattery in the Marvel cineverse one time so far and that was in Iron Man 2 as Howard Stark. We've known Slattery will make an appearance in Ant-Man because his name is on the poster and in the trailer. We've heard several rumored reports that we will see a flashback sequence in 1960s Cuba with a young Hank Pym (Michael Douglas). In fact if you look closely parts of the flashback are in the trailer. With Slattery already established as Stark in the time period it only seems natural for them to cross paths.

While promoting the final season of Mad Men, IGN was able to ask  Slattery about working on Ant-Man:

“It’s crazy, yeah. It’s the biggest set I’ve ever seen, I think, or I’ve ever been on certainly. It’s just a gigantic room and there’s numbers and girders and you think, is that what green screen looks like? And things change so fast. The way you did special effects last year can be completed [sic] outmoded in three months when they figure out some other way of generating some image. But yeah it certainly has become like it’s an industry. Marvel is just this unbelievable force now.”

Dominic Cooper has played a younger Howard Stark in Captain America and in several episodes of Agent Carter. When Slattery was asked if he has seen Cooper’s take on the character he replied:

“No, I haven’t watched any of it. It took me two years to watch my own [Iron Man 2]. Well no, that’s not true. I’ve seen scenes and I’ve seen him in other things and he’s terrific. I’ve never met him and I’m not a very knowledgeable fan. I’m sure people have, 'How dare he play this when Dominic…?!' I don’t really get into that so much. My participation hasn’t been that involved. I was there for a day and whenever we did Iron Man 2, it was not that much more involved this time.”

Is it just me or can you hear Slattery's voice in your head while reading this? Ant-Man sneaks into theaters July 17th.

With the release of Furious 7 coming up and the Fast & Furious franchise on my mind (well, even more than usual), I saw this video and thought the timing was perfect to share it with you guys. Professional driver Leona Chin was hired by a driving school to go undercover as a nerdy driving student and freak out their new instructors on their first day on the job, and MaxMan.tv was there to capture the whole thing with hidden cameras. Leona really commits to the whole thing, stalling out and driving like a nervous awkward teenager before letting loose and drifting around a parking lot with ridiculous accuracy. Here it is: the big reveal. Ryan Reynolds has tweeted our first look at him dressed in the Deadpool costume for the upcoming feature film. I still can't believe I'm actually typing these words because this project has been in development hell for so long, but seeing Reynolds himself in the suit — not just that leaked test footage — is a sight to behold for fans who have been waiting for this day for years. I like how they took their inspiration from Burt Reynolds, too, because why wouldn't they?

So what do you all think about the costume?
