This series of silhouette superhero art come from artist and graphic designer Steve Garcia. He calls the series "Super Silhouettes," and I think they all turned out pretty cool. The guy has a huge collection of art that you can check out by clicking on the link above, but these are some of my favorites.

Mark Millar’s Time-Travel Comic CHRONONAUTS to Get Film Adaptation

0
0

Universal Pictures has picked up the rights to the time-travel adventure comic book series Chrononauts, which comes from Mark Millar (Kick-Ass, Wanted, Kingsman: The Secret Service) and Sean Gordon Murphy (Interstellar comic).

Chrononauts was just released by Image Comics this week, and the story follows a scientific duo who become the first to travel back in time. Here’s the official description that includes more details:

Corbin Quinn and Danny Reilly are two buddies who love to have fun. They’re also scientific geniuses. When their research leads them to a time-traveling adventure, will they use their knowledge for the good of all mankind? Or use the space-time continuum for their own ends? This is the story of man’s first, televised steps through the time-stream and everything going wrong in the process.

Millar is a great comic writer that has told some really awesome stories in his career, and I've enjoyed reading his work. Some of the stuff he has done includes Old Man Logan, War Heroes, Wanted, and Marvel’s Civil War, just to name a few. Then all of the comics that have been adapted into films seemed to translate really well for the big screen.

I’m curious to see how this Chrononauts projects develops.

Predator Confirmed for MORTAL KOMBAT X

There were rumors that the iconic alien hunter Predator would be included in Mortal Kombat X as a playable character, but he wasn't mentioned in a list of confirmed characters that we posted a couple of days ago. But the Kombat Pack 1 product description that recently appeared on Xbox Marketplace has confirmed that "Predator: the Ultimate Hunter" will be a playable character in the highly-anticipated game.

We still don't know what exactly Predator will look like in the game, but I'm sure it will be a blast playing with him. It was recently revealed that Friday the 13th killer Jason Voorhees would also be a playable character in the game, and I'm still hoping that there's a chance for Spawn. Here's a screen shot of the description for the Kombat Pack 1 thanks to IGN:

The Kombat Pack 1 will be included with the Kollector’s Edition by Coarse, the Limited Edition, and the Premium Edition of Mortal Kombat X. It will also be available separately for $30 as a digital download. Mortal Kombat X will be out on April 14th for Xbox One, Xbox 360, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 3, and PC.

Competing King Arthur Film MAN AT ARMS To Be Directed By Jonathan Liebesman

Guy Ritchie has started production on Knights of the Round Table: King Arthur, the first in a planned franchise of six movies based on the King Arthur legend. But because this is Hollywood, and apparently competing projects have become an inevitability for everything in the public domain (see: the billion Robin Hood movies currently in development), there's another film in the works that uses the characters from the King Arthur legend but won't be featured in Knights of the Round Table's cinematic universe.

Deadline reports that Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Battle: Los Angeles director Jonathan Liebesman will direct Man at Arms, a movie about an aging Lancelot that's described as being similar to Clint Eastwood's classic western Unforgiven. After his love affair with Guinevere destroys Camelot, Lancelot is bent on making amends for his previous wrongdoing. I wonder if they'll get Richard Gere to play Lancelot, since he already played that part in First Knight back in the mid-'90s. Anything's better than Ioan Gruffudd's version in 2004's King Arthur (pictured).

So...yeah. This story may be the most representative of the entire state of the industry as any I've seen in a long time: a hack director with no vision taking on a gritty version of a public domain story despite a competing six-part franchise planned at a studio across town. Yep, that pretty much sums it up.

The METAL GEAR Series Should Die With Hideo Kojima's Departure

0
0

This morning, news broke confirming the fears of gaming fans worldwide. After silently removing his name from all Metal Gear V promotional sites, Konami posted a listing for a new lead for the franchise in lieu of creator Hideo Kojima's departure. Reports citing "power struggles" earlier in the week suggested that maybe the two had parted ways, but no one truly wanted to believe one of the best game developers of the last 20+ years had walked away from his pride and joy. While many games have experienced success apart from their original creators, I believe Metal Gear series should end with Hideo Kojima.

In the heyday of the console wars, it was a system seller for Sony. Before its launch, developers of MGS4 said the game would have to sell a million copies to justify the cost they spent on production of the game. On the day of its launch, Konami reported it sold 3 million copies. Its best competition in the market, Splinter Cell, is listed on the top selling games for Xbox having sold 3 million copies. Each Sony console lists MGS in it's top ten sellers with around 7 million copies sold for each title. So when Konami says they're going to continue making Metal Gear without Kojima, I can't fault them for that. I can fault them for thinking they can do it without Kojima.

Publishers don't avoid attempting to create the next Metal Gear because it's not profitable, it's because they can't. Very few can attempt a game with the level of depth, story, and gameplay Hideo Kojima has built over the past 30 years. Play Metal Gear Solid 2 if you don't believe me. Years later it remains on my list of top three games and if there were a vote to determine games to be inducted into an art museum, it would be at the top of my list. I rank the Metal Gear franchise alongside the likes of Zelda, Mario, and Sonic. I'm sure, in fact, many people would.

It takes a special kind of person to keep a story engaging over the course of 30 years. It takes a really special kind of person to keep a gamer engaged in a game that has over 8 hours of cinematics. It takes a one of a kind individual to place a character in a game that places easter eggs and special events so obscure you can play through the game seven times before you encounter it. It takes an unbelievable god-like developer for more fans to outcry his release from a series than the game's main voice actor (David Hayter) being removed from the series. It takes Hideo Kojima to make Metal Gear, and Konami are fools to think gamers don't know that.

For that reason I hope they wise up and at the very worst just shelve the series until the dust settles and they work something out, or just abandon the series altogether. To keep it alive and try with anyone else would result in a massive disappointment for both parties.

Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg's PREACHER Casts Arseface

0
0

(Very slight spoilers for Preacher ahead.)

When Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg - yep, the same guys behind This is The End and Superbad - announced that they would be adapting the seminal '90s comic Preacher as an AMC series, they promised that they were going to be faithful to the source material. One of the elements that Rogen promised would be there - even before the series was officially announced - was Arseface, the comic character who, inspired by Kurt Cobain, tried to shoot himself in the head with a shotgun, but failed to kill himself and ended up becoming a rock star in his own right, despite not being able to speak intelligibly.

Deadline reports that they have now found the guy who will bring this character to life, and that is Rake star Ian Colletti. I've never heard of him before, but I doubt he'll be recognizable in the show, since after the shotgun blast to the face, he's hideously deformed. The report seems to indicate that the suicide attempt will be some kind of reveal in the show, and that the character's name will be Eugene (I don't remember him having a name in the comics):

Even with his horribly disfigured face and severe speech impediment, Eugene’s still the nicest kid you’ll ever meet and really looks up to Jesse. Stomach-churningly difficult to look at, Eugene’s the town’s reviled Frankenstein’s monster, but that won’t change his earnest, sweet and pure outlook on life. However, he is troubled by something terrible he’s done in the past — something he fears might have turned God himself against him.

This is the second piece of casting for the show, following the addition of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. star Ruth Negga as Tulip yesterday. Still no word whether Dominic Cooper is still in contention for the lead role of Jesse Custer, but I imagine we'll be hearing more very soon.

Pixar's UP Recut as a Horror Film

Recutting family films into horror movies is a practice that has been around for over a decade now. I remember seeing a video on Ebaum's World back before YouTube even existed that reimagined Mary Poppins as a horror movie. The trend continues with this version of Pixar's Up that depicts Carl as a creepy child abductor, and it's very effective and well-made. For those of you who are looking to experience more Up-related content that isn't quite as dark, check out this video of a doghouse built to look just like the house in the film, as well as the movie imagined as a Michael Bay production and an amusing and humorous censored version.

Sony Pictures to Develop a 300-Style ROMEO & JULIET

sony-pictures-to-develop-a-300-style-romeo-juliet

William Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet is considered one of the greatest and most tragic romance stories of all time. It has had several film adaptations over the years, but none of them will be like the film version that Sony Pictures is planning on making. According to THR, it will be made in the style of Zack Snyder and Frank Miller's 300

The studio is in final negotiations to pick up the film project called Verona, which is the setting of the city in the legendary story. The spec comes from Neil Widener and Gavin James, and the site reports:

Exact details are being kept more clandestine than a love affair between two teens from opposing Italian families, but the script is said to reimagine the classic love story through a lens of an epic, 300-style world. 300 was the gritty and fantastical Zack Snyder movie that adapted the Frank Miller comic book miniseries that retold a battle between Greeks vs. Persians in a stylized and heightened reality.

This sounds like such an absurd concept. As much as I enjoyed the 300 films and the visual style, mashing it up with Romeo and Juliet just seems like a terrible idea, and completely inappropriate for the source material. Shakespeare would role over in his grave over this news. How about a movie in which Shakespeare comes back from the dead and uses extreme measures to stop Hollywood from making this film?

Revisit Robb Stark's GAME OF THRONES Adventures in 60 Second Animation

Not too long ago, we published a 60 second speedrun animation video about the life (and - spoiler alert - death) of Sean Bean's Ned Stark on HBO's Game of Thrones. Now the same animation house is back with a look at one of Ned's sons, Robb Stark (played by Richard Madden in the show).

The tragedy of Robb's quick rise to power and shocking murder is tough to grasp in animated form when all of the characters have high pitched voices and look like little blobs, but it's still a nice way to retrace the history of The King in the North before things went south. Take a look below, thanks to Vanity Fair:

Updated Spoiler Intel for CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR and AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON

Creator Unknown

Creator Unknown

Yesterday we shared some possible SPOILER information with you regarding Captain America: Civil War and Avengers: Age of Ultron. Today we have some updated intel on that from Badass Digest. These new details debunk some of the rumors from yesterday's report and then offers up their own SPOILER-filled material.

I'm going to get into the spoiler stuff now, so if you don't want to know...

You.

Can.

Leave.

Now.

The rumor that hit the internet yesterday from Bleeding Cool said that on top of Captain America, Iron Man, Black Widow, Hawkeye and Black Panther being featured in Captain America: Civil War, we would also see Hulk, Thor, War Machine, Scarlet Witch, Wasp, and a fourteen-year-old Peter Parker aka Spider-Man.

Badass Digest claims that the second list of names on the list may not be accurate. They say that they've seen two drafts of the script for the film and in both drafts the movie ends with the original Avengers splitting up and going their separate ways.

"Captain America and Nick Fury put together a new team, missing most of the big solo guns. Iron Man is done, Hulk is missing and Thor has returned to Asgard to deal with the events leading up to Thor: Ragnarok. Those last two are vital - my sources tell me they're sitting out Infinity War Part I as well, which means Marvel wants to take them off the shared universe board until they (along with Captain America) return in Part II. Bringing Thor right back for Civil War makes no sense. Bringing Hulk back makes even less sense, as his disappearance is a pretty big deal at the end of Ultron, and undoing that immediately seems silly."

The report goes on to admit that it is possible these characters could show up in a cameo capacity. They also says that since War Machine and Scarlet Witch are Avengers now it would make "strong" sense for them to show up in Civil War, but they don't think that Peter Parker will have a major role. As for the other characters:

"Ant-Man and The Wasp? Could be! There will be a Wasp in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. But here's the thing about this rumor: it's just listing all the characters who have been in the movies. On some level I get that Civil War would bring in a lot of cameos (it was being called Avengers 2.5 in-house), but since the plan for Infinity War is so specific - a lot of the name brand Avengers will not be in Part I - I don't see Marvel just shoehorning everybody in here."

It was also reported yesterday that Quicksilver dies in Age of Ultron. Apparently that might not be the case. In one draft of the script Quicksilver does die, but in the most recent draft that they read, he doesn't. So there's a chance that he actually doesn't die, which is good. I think Quicksilver is a solid character to keep around. But things might have changed while they were shooting the film.

Both sites have had their hits and misses with leaked information, and I'm sure there is truth to both of them. We'll all know for sure when we see the events play out on the big screen for ourselves.

Badass Digest seems to have a lot of inside information, and they give us an educated breakdown of what they think we will see happen in Phase 3 based on the information they have:

I think that after the events of Civil War Captain America is no more - either dead or retired, possibly taking on the Nomad name. That film is very much setting up the next Avengers in a big, big way. After Ragnarok Thor is also out of the picture. The Hulk will remain missing or will pop up offworld. Cap's side will have lost the CIvil War, so maybe Black Widow and Nick Fury have gone deep, deep underground. Considering his general nature and the storyline of his solo movie, Ant-Man would also be on Cap's side if he's in Civil War, so he and the Wasp could join the spies on the lam. Iron Man is running the show when Infinity War Part I happens... and everything goes bad. It isn't until Part II that all the big guns come back, teaming up with the new kids like Doctor Strange, Spider-Man, Captain Marvel and a whole slew of Inhumans, to take down Thanos and save the universe.

What do you think of this information, and how do you all think it will go down!?

See 100 Pop Culture Costumes on One Poster

Halloween Express (via Sploid) has produced this cool little poster featuring the costumes of 100 pop culture figures from movies, television, and video games. I almost wish it didn't have the "answers" below each character, because while some are obvious (Captain America, Han Solo, etc.), there are a few that I definitely wouldn't have gotten without the assist at the bottom. If you don't cheat, can you guess the identity of all of these costume wearers?

Conspiracy Theory Video on How BACK TO THE FUTURE Predicted 9/11

how-back-to-the-future-predicted-9/11-and-the-kennedy-assassination

For those of you who are into conspiracy theories, here's a couple that you might find amusingly interesting. These two videos give us a breakdown of how the 1985 film Back to the Future predicted 9/11 and the Kennedy Assassination.

I came across these over at /Film, and the videos are presented in a very serious tone, just like some of those Illuminati conspiracy documentaries you can find on Netflix, which makes them even more amusing.

It's fascinating to see how you can link almost anything to these tragic events if you really look hard enough, especially when you can find them in a classic comedy time-travel film like Back to the Future. I think that this is the point these videos are trying to make, because there are so many other crazy conspiracy theories out there for these two events.

U.S. Trailer for Ethan Hawke's Drone War Film GOOD KILL

us-trailer-for-ethan-hawkes-drone-war-film-good-kill

We've seen a couple of trailers for director Andrew Niccol (Gattaca) and Ethan Hawke's drone war thriller Good Kill.  The movie tells the story of a drone pilot who is struggling with his job in the military and the drone missions that he has to do.

The trailer offers some more footage and gives us more insight into the story. This looks like a really deep and intense movie, and I'm a fan of most of the talent involved with creating it. The film definitely looks worth watching. It also stars  Bruce Greenwood, Jake Abel, January Jones, and Zoe Kravitz, and here's the synopsis:

Good Kill tells the story of a Las Vegas fighter-pilot turned drone-pilot (Ethan Hawke), who fights the Taliban via remote control for half of his day, then goes home to his wife (January Jones) and kids in the suburbs for the other half. But the pilot is starting to question the mission. Is he creating more terrorists than he’s killing? Is he fighting a war without end?
One soldier’s tale with epic implications, Good Kill offers an exploration of how a man’s psychological, emotional and moral boundaries are challenged by the realities of 21st century warfare. It aims to initiate an important dialogue about the current techniques used in modern war and to illustrate how war is constantly being redefined according to the technologies and methods in play.

The movie will be released on September 5th, 2015. Thanks to ComingSoon for the trailer.

MAN UP Trailer: Rom-Com Starring Simon Pegg and Lake Bell

0
0

Simon Pegg is still best known for his appearances in Star Trek, Mission: Impossible, and the Cornetto Trilogy, but the actor isn't a stranger to romantic comedies and dramas. He's appeared in Run, Fatboy, Run, and Hector and the Search For Happiness, and now he's lined up a new effort opposite Lake Bell (In A World...) called Man Up.

The trailer was just released, and it tells the story of a cynical woman who has essentially given up on finding love who ends up impersonating her friend when she meets a man the friend was supposed to go on a blind date with. It's a silly premise and looks pretty formulaic, but Bell and Pegg are both capable actors so I'm hoping they'll be able to elevate the material a little bit. Yahoo UK has the trailer, and Man Up (which is directed by Ben Palmer) arrives in theaters on May 29th in the UK, and doesn't have a U.S. release date set yet.

Nancy (Lake Bell), is done with dating. 10 times bitten, 100 times shy, she’s exhausted by the circus. So when Jack (Simon Pegg) blindly mistakes her for his date, no one is more surprised than her when she does the unthinkable and just goes with it. It’s going to take a night of pretending to be someone else for Nancy to finally Man Up and be her painfully honest, awesomely unconventional self… but will Jack also Man Up, and be able to get over her duplicity? Best just to let the evening unfold, roll with the consequences, and see if one crazy, unpredictable, complicated night can bring these two messy souls together.

BATGIRL #40 Review: A Tale Of Two Batgirls

0
0

Writers: Cameron Stewart & Brenden Fletcher

Artist: Babs Tarr

Colorist: Maris Wicks

When the creative team of Cameron Stewart, Brenden Fletcher, and Babs Tarr was announced for Batgirl, I couldn't help but be a little apprehensive. They were following a pretty successful run by one of the best writers in the business (Gail Simone), and were moving Babs away from Gotham proper into a trendy suburb, so there was plenty of room for a letdown.

Fortunately the letdown never happened, and now here we are at issue #40, the big climax to the first major storyline. For those who haven’t been keeping up with the story so far, I suggest you give those a read, but if not, here is a recap.

Since Babs arrived in Burnside, there has been someone in the shadows trying to muddy up her good name, make her a wanted criminal in her new town, and isolate her from her friends and allies. Up to this point, that plan has achieved a healthy amount of success. The person knows a great deal about her, so much so that a natural assumption would be that the culprit is someone close to her.

All right, last warning: spoilers from here on out.

Look, I even put a big picture here just to give you one last chance. What can I say, I'm a giver.

In last week's Secret Origins, we got a glimpse into how Barbara regained the use of her legs. In un-Sheldon Cooper terms: through the use of multiple brain scans, an algorithm was created that relays a signal from an implant in her spine to her nervous system, allowing those nerves to regain function, which allows her to walk.

I'm pretty sure I just made my old science teacher really proud.

Batgirl-39-Spoilers-Oracle-2.jpg

The experiment worked, but in the process it appears as if the algorithm that gave her legs life again has also gained a sort of sentience, and that small flicker of consciousness has now deemed that her life was stolen by the flesh and blood Barbara. Understandably, she wants that back. What sticks out here is how striking a resemblance the artificial intelligence bears to Pre-New 52 Oracle. It starts to go into very meta territory if you let it, especially with its replays of past events that should be very familiar to fans of Batman lore. Fortunately, it wraps up before it gets too convoluted.

Issue 40 kicks off right where Secret Origins stops, with Frankie and Babs confronting the A.I. Things go a bit south afterward, however, and she finds herself about to have her mind erased so the A.I. can “resume” her life where she left off.

The last half of the book is a blast and gets so many things right tone wise, but it is not the most important part of the issue. Page 4 (I'm reading a digital copy this time, so might be page 5 or 6 in the paper version with ads taken into account) illustrates a flashback between Barbara and Frankie, in a short exchange about Babs' then-new project, a predictive algorithm that seeks to anticipate criminal activity before it happens. That in itself is a slippery slope that involves Tom Cruise and Colin Farrell, so it's best to be avoided, but the thing that stands out most is just how angry Barbara is.

In Secret Origins you see her and Frankie meet for the first time, where Frankie is also in a wheelchair, and it's Barbara who encourages her about the future. In the issue 40 sequence (part of which you can see above), with Frankie already making progress towards walking again, and Barbara still wheelchair-bound, it just hit home how infuriating that must be, when despite having the will, the skills, and the strength, the body just can't function like you need it to. As much as a comic can make you empathize, this series of panels did just that. It really hit home with me, and while I’ve never had to experience that set of circumstances, my heart goes out to anyone that has, and I couldn’t stop thinking about that after I read this page. Take that for what you will, but thought I would mention it.

The flashback sequences also endear you greatly to Frankie in a way that really shouldn't be possible in a mere 5 issue stint. There are characters that have 30 and 50 issue runs that I couldn’t care less about, but in a very small amount of time the writers have ingratiated her to the reader, and I couldn’t be happier about that.

The last half, as previously said, flies by, with a fantastically illustrated fight scene that shows how much of a badass Batgirl can be, peppered with some nice character moments from Dinah, Frankie, and Qadir. The same youthful exuberance that has been prevalent since Stewart, Fletcher, and Tarr took over is on full display here, and the biggest complaint I have about the book is that I have to wait until June to read the next true issue due to all this Convergence nonsense. It should also be mentined how refreshing and cool Tarr's art is. It's fun and dynamic, and shines in both dialogue and in action scenes. The new costume is good on its own, but with Tarr's pencils, it really reaches its full potential.

Oh, and I couldn't finish this without mentioning the best cherry on top in a long while. Towards issue's end, there is a very big, not subtle at all, just-about-says-it-out-loud cliffhanger on Frankie becoming this version of the DCU’s Oracle, which is fantastic. One, Frankie is awesome in her own right anyway, but two, it allows the Oracle persona to not go by the wayside and allows a fresh character to inhabit the role and give it new life. It's things like this that I wish the New 52 did more of, but truthfully I’ll take what I can get.

With all the creative shake-ups and mass crossover hysteria that is the New DCU lately, I hope this book remains unchanged and continues to be one of the highlights of DC’s monthly output.

By now you probably got the point that I loved this issue, and just about adore the book in general, but I’m always interested to hear what you think as well, so make sure to let me know in the comments.

Keanu Reeves, Jim Carrey, and More Join Cannibal Love Story THE BAD BATCH

Guys like Keanu Reeves and Jim Carrey are reaching the point in their careers where they can pretty much do whatever they want. Ultra-violent revenge thriller? Sure. Comic book movie sequel? Why not? How about a cannibal love story? The Wrap reports that the two actors have signed on to join Batman V Superman star Jason Momoa in Ana Lily Amirpour's new film The Bad Batch, which will be set in Texas and has the backing of Megan Ellison's Annapurna Pictures and VICE. Amirpour made waves with her vampire movie A Girl Walks Home Alone At Night last year, and her next film is highly anticipated among fans of independent film.

Suki Waterhouse (is that a True Blood character, or a real person?) and Diego Luna are also on board, but we don't know much about their characters thus far. In truth, we don't know much about the other characters either, aside from their names: Momoa will play Miami Man, Reeves will be The Dream, and Carrey will be The Hermit, while Waterhouse and Luna have the much less interesting names of Arlen and Jimmy, respectively.

That's about all of the information that's out there about this project right now, but the fact that it's a cannibal love story means it's not something we see every day, and with a talented cast like this, it's certainly going to get a lot of people's attention when it comes out. What do you think?

Infographic: JOHN WICK Kills Broken Down Into Accuracy, Location, and More

If you're an action movie junkie and you haven't seen John Wick yet, you're living a lie. Writer/directors Chad Stehelski and David Leitch pulled off some excellent action sequences, and Keanu Reeves brought a level of humanity to a character that is one step away from a superhero. Simply put, it rocks.

We've already written about a video that shows all of Wick's kills in the movie, but now George Hatzis is back with another infographic (via The Playlist), this time taking aim at all of the details of each of those kills. He measures headshots, shot accuracy, location, and more. I call it a "killfographic." Check it out below.

John Wick is available now, and the directors are currently developing a sequel.
